Hazardous waste mishandling may prove costly

UNM Safety and Risk Services is still in conversations with the New Mexico Environment Department — and may be fined — over numerous safety violations, mostly concerning the handling, labeling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Carla Domenici, director of SRS, said they are still in discussions with NMED over almost 30 violations, stemming from an inspection conducted in March 2016.

UNM Safety & Risk Services Department provides “comprehensive occupational safety, health, and environmental management” services to ensure that departments are providing a safe working environment.

Allison Majure, NMED communications director, said the Environment Department’s Hazardous Waste Bureau’s oversight assures New Mexicans that hazardous waste is managed safely and that contaminated sites are cleaned up, in a manner that is safe and protective of human health and the environment.

UNM voting site makes casting ballots easier

By Nichole Harwood @Nolidoli1 Early voting is underway in Bernalillo County, and there will be an early voting site open in the Student Union Building until Friday, in order to make it easier for students and staff to cast a ballot.

Joey Keefe, a public information officer in the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office, said the office currently has 19 early voting convenience centers and 69 voting convenience centers in Bernalillo County.

“Our goal is to always have polling locations in parts of the county that will be able to serve as many voters as possible,” Keefe said.

Within UNM there is technically just one location, he said, but there should be 20 to 30 voting booths operating.

The site is located on the 3rd floor of the SUB in rooms Lobo A and B, he said.

Keefe said the UNM location was logical because of the way that it is set up and the fact that there are potentially thousands of eligible voters on campus at any given time.

So far in 2016, 4,316 voters have cast a ballot at the UNM site, he said.

During the equivalent amount of time in 2012, 4,269 voters cast a ballot at the UNM site.

Because of these numbers, he said overall, the turnout at the UNM site has been fairly consistent from one presidential election to the next.

ing to leave campus,” Keefe said.

To inform students of the early voting station, the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office has had a voter outreach team, which has been very active at UNM leading up to this year’s election, he said.

Keefe said the team has held at least 15 events at UNM since the end of this year’s primary election, which includes, among others, third party voter registration agent trainings and

voter registration drives.

The County Clerk’s Office engages in an ongoing advertising campaign throughout each election year to educate voters about their options, he said.

This advertising includes more digital and social media outreach leading up to this election, as the method tends to be successful with college-aged voters, Keefe said.

As far as how the early voter stations work, Keefe said that under the voting convenience center model, an eligible Bernalillo County voter may cast a ballot at any location within the county.

This means that a voter is able to vote wherever is most convenient, based on where they may be at any given point during the day and regardless of the precinct in which they are registered, he said.

Keefe said it is important for the UNM student population to remember that this year’s ballot is long and has a lot of content on it.

It is a 19-inch, two-sided ballot, and Keefe said that studying your sample ballot before you head to an early voting location will help you make more informed decisions and will allow you to complete the process in a shorter amount of time.

Students may access their sample ballot by visiting www.bernco. gov/MyVoterInformation and typing in their name as it appears on their voter registration form, as well as their full date of birth, he said.

Keefe said that all early voting convenience centers in the county, including the UNM site, will close at 8 p.m. on Friday. Keefe noted that the UNM site will also be a voting convenience center on Election Day, for those who aren’t able to cast a ballot before early voting ends.

On Election Day, the UNM site will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., he said.

Gabe Gallegos, spokesperson for ASUNM said that although ASUNM is not involved in the early voting booths, they encourage everyone to get out there out and vote.

Gallegos said ASUNM believes having a polling location here at UNM is convenient and accessible for the students here.

“We hope having a location here gets millennials and University students out to vote,” he said.

New Mexico, UNM has completed all corrective actions and returned to compliance,” Majure said.

“The violations which were observed during the inspection were assessed penalties and UNM and NMED are currently in negotiations concerning the final penalty amount.”

The violations against UNM SRS are listed in a letter to President Bob Frank, dated June 17, from John E. Kieling, Chief of Hazardous Waste Bureau.

Many of the violations concern hazardous waste from laboratories in multiple campus departments and, according to the document, “the majority of hazardous waste generated at UNM...includes spent solvents, acutely toxic waste, corrosive waste and flammable waste.”

The violations included failure to label containers, failure to keep containers closed, operating without a permit, failure to conduct annual training, failure to conduct weekly inspections and failure to properly store universal waste, among others.

Treating hazardous waste without a permit was one of the more serious violations incurred, Majure said, and can carry a penalty of up to $10,000.

waste, the amount of waste, the potential release of waste, and other factors.

Some of the violations concerned failure to pay business fees and hazardous waste generator fees. As a Hazardous Waste Generator, UNM is held to fees, which they failed to pay for 2013 and 2014. As of June 6, UNM SRS has since paid those fees.

Domenici said UNM SRS has been working through the alleged violations with NMED, which can be a “lengthy process.”

“We are responding to them and making corrective action, where appropriate,” she said. “It takes a while for any of these to resolve.”

Chemanji Shu-Nyamboli, Environmental Health manager for UNM, said that NMED first issued a Notice of Violation and proposed penalties, but also gave an opportunity for UNM SRS to respond.

In the June 17 email, NMED evaluates the response of UNM SRS to the violations and, for almost half of the 30 listed violations, NMED either “respectfully disagreed” with UNM SRS’s initial response and/or requested further documentation from the University.

“We’re looking at each individual alleged violation and responding appropriately,” Shu-Nyamboli said. “There are areas where we disagree with the NMED and we will let them

know, ‘this is where we disagree and this is why.’”

According to the email, NMED required that, within 30 days, UNM provide a “written description of the actions” taken to address the violations, as well as a schedule for corrective actions “not yet completed.”

“Due to the nature of the violations listed above and UNM’s past history of noncompliance with 20.4.1 NMAC, NMED will propose a civil penalty for these violations,” the email states.

“20.4.1 NMAC” refers specifically to hazardous waste management.

While Domenici couldn’t speak to the past “noncompliance” since she didn’t work for SRS until 2011, she said any proposed fines against SRS aren’t “technically assessed” until the resolution process is complete.

In one of the violation citations, inspector Aaron Coffman observed a “failure to mark containers or hazardous waste” and “multiple instances of unlabeled, mislabeled or incompletely labeled containers” throughout UNM campus laboratories, including ones in Castetter, Dominici, Centennial and Northrop Hall.

While more than 250 UNM laboratories generate hazardous waste, Castetter Hall, Centennial Engineering Center and Clark Hall contain the highest number of labs on Main Campus with 58, 40 and 32, respectively.

Domenici said, while laboratories are run by the Principal Investigator, the lab personnel and the chemical safety officer, all UNM and HSC labs are overseen by Academic Affairs, HSC Research or the OVPR. SRS’s role is to advise them on safety issues.

Although SRS does not have any policing authority, their duties include conducting laboratory inspections and picking up waste, she said, in addition to serving as the point of contact with regulators as well as technical and subject matter experts. “(We need to) look at areas where there is potential for improvement, build better relationships with different stakeholders and, moving forward, make sure we are as close to 100 percent compliant as we can be,” Shu-Nyamboli said.

Domenici said the process has been a learning experience.

“When you deal with regulators as regularly as we do, you never enjoy an inspection. But when they come in and they look at things, you can use it as an opportunity to make positive change and make the University safer,” she said. “And so that’s what we’ve done. We’ve been working very diligently to look to see if there are practices that we could change or improve.”

One example of that change, Shu-Nyamboli has implemented Hazardous Waste Handling Training, which is offered to all

employees who handle any sort of hazardous waste.

“It wasn’t something they asked us to do or something they said we weren’t doing, it was just something we decided to do to educate the community and take that further step to make the campus safer,” she said.

“That has been one very positive change we’ve made.”

Although it is not certain what fines will be assessed, Domenici is hopeful that, within three to six months at most, the matter will be resolved with NMED. She said, through the process, NMED has been “very cooperative” and “easy to work with,” while SRS has also worked very closely with “everyone involved, from the Provost’s office down to lab personnel.”

“Internally, everybody has really come together,” Domenici said. “I’ve actually seen even an improvement in communication and collaboration since it happened. My goal is to use this as a springboard to improve all of the programs across campus, to get the campus community to react and cooperate with SRS and engage with us as partners, so we make the campus safer.”

LETTERS ASUNM candidates meeting fell short Good evening ASUNM Elections Commission, The meeting on Tuesday evening seemed to fall short of its own standards. While the information covered was pertinent to us as candidates, the efforts of the Elections Commission seemed to be wanting. There was a major disconnect in the message being put out, i.e., the importance of the ASUNM Senate, and the preparations of the Elections Commission. From the beginning, members of the Commission spoke softly and in a manner inconsistent with any semblance of authority. Adding insult to injury, the Commission allowed for candidates to more or less run the meeting, especially candidates who were not paying close

Hiring freeze could result in exploitation of staff Dear Editor, In regard to last week’s University budget town hall, I would like to address an issue that came up. It’s a pity that President Frank completely missed the point that an employee made about the fact that individuals are being asked to do more for less.

It wasn’t surprising, though. I find the administration has a difficult time taking staff concerns into serious consideration,

On Sept. 8, the Daily Lobo published my letter, “Rational and Educated Americans should vote for Hillary Clinton,” which was mostly about the book, “Tyrants - 2,500 Years of Absolute Power And Corruption.”

The majority the letter was about the history of tyranny through human history. It ended with short shout out for the centrism of the Clintons and Obama.

This letter seemed to trigger Daily Lobo reader L.X. Macuahuitl. He replied on Sept. 15 with “Hillary Clinton is the face of Political Corruption.” Macuahuitl charges the Clintons are guilty of “High Crimes and Treason” over the last 30 years, and that Hillary has brain damage from head injuries and increasingly displays the signs

As the Elections Commission, it is within both your power and responsibility to tailor the meeting towards the greater good of the candidates present, not spoonfeeding those who failed to open their ears.

This chronic two-steps-forward and onestep-back approach led to the meeting dragging on far longer than necessary.

Although the most concerning aspect of the ordeal was the complete absence of a direct answer from the sitting senators about what exactly the Senate’s role and reach is. For future meetings, please conduct rehearsals of the meeting and put the bottom line up front and individual questions following the meeting’s conclusion.

The employee was making a statement about the fact that when programs lose staff, they are not being given approval to hire a replacement. Instead, the work is being unloaded onto staff that are in completely different departments.

The administration fails to acknowledge that these staff members already have fulltime jobs, and are now being asked to take on a workload that is equivalent to another fulltime job with little or no compensation. The employee who spoke mentioned that this could result in exploitation, thus resulting in an exodus of staff.

This will leave the University with less institutional knowledge in moving forward. I would hope that is not the goal of the University.

At the town hall, President Frank stated that these small departments need to be consolidated instead of having staff members for each program. This consolidation of workload is a surefire way to diminish the work of your staff and ensure future exploitation. Again, it seems he did not understand that these people are already working in full-time positions.

In his weekly perspective on Oct. 24, the President said the following: “At the town hall, some people voiced concerns about having to continually do more with

less. Our goal is to find ways to support each other across departments and units, sharing resources so our teams can accomplish the necessary work without overburdening individuals.”

How is this situation not “overburdening individuals” when, again, staff is already taking on a full workload in their existing position? So the question is, what is the measurement of “overburdening individuals?” This appears to be more rhetoric from the administration in the place of solutions.

If she is so brain damaged, how did she escape prosecution for 30 years? Either Hillary is fairly honest, or the Republicans SUCK at investigations.

Macuahuitl continues: “The crap sandwich that is this electoral decision is distracting from the real issues endangering our republic. The current cadre of political whores and psychopaths, of both political parties, are incapable of reforming or addressing the problems they helped create.”

This is BS. The POTUS reached out to the GOP on the economy, on the war(s), on health care and immigration, but the GOP remained intransigent. They claim it isn’t because the POTUS is half Black, so what else is it?

Here is how I closed my Sept. 8 letter: “It’s remarkable that the only two Presidents in modern times, Obama and Clinton (42) who came in and cleaned up Reagan and Bush’s voodoo economics, slashed unemployment, while raising taxes on the wealthy, causing massive deficits to plummet and the stock markets to soar, even while expanding health coverage for children and adults, are so despised

by so many Americans as sell-outs and failures.”

Here is how Macuahuitl responds: “If the answer to successful governance of an empire (nation) were ever growing rates of taxation and public spending, overregulation of business and manipulation of the citizenry, cultural and currency debasement, corruption and greed of public officials and bread and circuses distractions while national sovereignty is dismantled, then Rome would still rule the world.”

Does he believe that gay Americans getting married and being miserable just like everyone else, is a sort of cultural debasement? How is having regulations, like not having lead in the water, a bad thing?

Under President Bill Clinton, government spending plummeted, just like Public Sector employment (government jobs) plummeted under Obama. We’ve seen what happens when leaders like Gov. Martinez refuse to raise taxes: we get a weakened University, a crime ridden city and a failed state.

On Oct. 23 Macuahuitl (Who clearly watched the debates) writes: “Mrs. Clinton — ill, frail and evil beyond normal folk’s understanding — will be the ‘winner’ of the general. All the stops are pulled and all the minions of the shadow

government are out in force. Lies, more lies and damned lies are the order of the day, but more insidious is the role of the 4th estate in this charade of mass manipulation.”

What? Today the Daily Lobo published Macuahuitl’s latest screed: “This is, arguably, about treason. REAL treason, not the nambypamby misuse of the term that often flies around the internet and elsewhere.”

The punishment for treason is death.

Does David Lynch, editor of the Daily Lobo agree that the Clintons should be put to death? Then why print it? What happened to this flagship University? The intellectual rot, breaks the god damn heart!

I recently received a two day unpaid suspension from the University of New Mexico for my Sept. 19 letter to the Daily Lobo about a press conference by Governor Susana Martinez, which she eventually cancelled. I have never had a problem taking responsibility for my actions or failures. I am proud that I do not have to hide behind a fake name or pseudonym.

Study: Homeless housing benefits exceed costs

By Sarah Trujillo @sarahtweets_abq UNM released results of an extensive study conducted by the Institute for Social Research, which found that the benefits of paying to house the homeless population far exceed the costs.

The study looked at the Heading Home Initiative, a program that aims to expand resources to house chronically homeless people who are grappling with addiction and connected disorders.

The study analyzed which costs more — housing the homeless or letting them remain on the streets.

After an almost three year long process with 95 applicants, the researchers concluded that for every $1 spent, the program yields $1.78 in benefits.

“We’re literally changing lives and bringing hope to people who thought they were lost, forgotten, and invisible.”

Jodie Jepson Heading Home housing director Breanna Anderson, communications director for Heading Home, said five years since the program started, the initiative has housed 610 individuals and their family members, as well as saving millions of taxpayer dollars, all while expanding efforts to end homelessness.

“From an economic development standpoint it is creating a cost savings for taxpayers,” Anderson said. “Since the study has proven that it’s almost 32 percent cheaper to house someone than it is to leave them on the streets.”

Paul Guerin, the senior research scientist at the institute, said most studies on homelessness and its contributing factors typically only look at hospital data, while this study provides data from places frequented by homeless people all around Albuquerque.

According to the results of the study, the most vulnerable living on the streets may wind up in jail, emergency rooms and emergency shelters, and end up going through inpatient and outpatient treatment services.

The study also explained that these services often require acute care. Hospitals are required by law to provide these services, which may be intensified by the circumstances of being homeless.

Research has proven that the heavy use of these services puts a significant financial weight on the public, and can add up to millions per year, according to the study.

For the program model, Guerin said the idea is to make housing the top priority, then begin to tackle other factors which can contribute to homelessness.

Jodie Jepson, Heading Home housing director, said she agrees that the housing-first model de-

creases drug and alcohol use, and can be hugely beneficial to people with mental health issues, who often don’t take their medication when they’re on the streets.

“It’s not just about housing people, it’s about how we are impacting in providing opportunities for folks to smile,” Jepson said. “Get up each day and hopefully have a good day.”

Previously federally funded programs, which are unavailable to convicted felons, required applicants to maintain employment, stay clean and attend some form of counseling.

Heading Home does offer case management, an opportunity to meet with a specified case manager to go over resources in the community, but contrary to federal housing, this is an optional process.

Anderson said the initiative is a model program and could easily be used across the state and country.

“Several cities, including Lexington, Kentucky and Anaheim, California, have come to Albuquerque to learn about the initiative and recreated it in their respective cities,” Anderson said. “This program is a humane and cost-saving solution to ending homelessness.”

Anderson also said move-in services are available for clients of the initiative, so they can move into a furnished home.

“Due to a big surge in housing, we really need furniture donations,” Anderson said. “Couches, bed frames, dining room tables and chairs, beds, that are new or used, in good condition.”

Guerin said there are benefits to addressing homelessness both locally and nationally, and said the study also adds to the national conversation to combat homelessness.

“Locally, this gives policy makers additional information that helps in foreign policy,” Guerin said. “So now they have this study and they can say this works locally and they can consider using this type of program more frequently and putting more resources into it.”

Guerin described Mayor Richard Berry as a pragmatic business man. Since this study has both economic and social benefits, both liberals and conservatives can agree on the program.

Jepson stressed that partnerships and volunteers created this level of social change.

“We’re so honored to have our valuable partners with us today, to celebrate the impact that we’re having on our community,” Jepson said. “We’re literally changing lives and bringing hope to people who thought they were lost, forgotten, and invisible.”

In a short Heading Home film, Mayor Berry agreed that the initial task is to get people off the streets and stabilized. He said sometimes with chronically homeless people, experts do not have days or weeks, but hours to bring an individual to a mental state where they actually want to leave the streets.

“One of the first things they ask for when they get off the streets, once they are stabilized, is how can they help somebody else,” Berry said.

If passed, Amendment 1 will split this process into two elections. The President and Vice President will be elected three weeks before the ten senators are elected.

Amendment 2 - Article III, Article IV, Article VII The budget process used to be concurrent with the election process, but the two processes now occur separately. If passed, Amendment 2 will remove outdated language to reflect this change. It’s not often you find yourself at an anniversary show of a music group on Halloween. That turned out to be the case at the El Rey Theater, when the electronic music trio Autograf performed on Monday to an enthusiastic crowd.

Drinks were overpriced, but that’s just the nature of a concert venue. But the show made up for the outrageous drink prices with the passion and stage presence of the group.

A relatively new group that started in 2013, Autograf hails from the windy city of Chicago, a town famous for good music and a long history of legendary musicians. Autograf may be next on the list, as their performance at the El Rey was one worthy of the Electric Daisy Carnival.

above the dance floor, the first thing I noticed about the group was their unique stage setup.

When it comes to the equipment of EDM performances, DJs seldom use more than a laptop and a couple of turntables.

Autograf made use of turntables, trigger pads, and a drum set in their live performance.

When the group took the stage, the first thing that jumped out was their attire. The trio appeared to be dressed as bottles of Sriracha hot sauce in honor of the holiday. The surprise was charismatic, and added to the fun vibe of a show where the DJs were performing for an audience of goblins, gorillas and various other fans in costume.

Their first songs immediately stole the hearts of the audience.

Autograf ’s charismatic stage presence and developed song structure would have been enough to fuel their performance,

but combined with a unique light show, intelligent sound engineering and the acoustics of the theater, a good performance became a great performance.

Between songs, Autograf kept introductions and chit chat to a respectable minimum. The El Rey is a somewhat intimate venue, but this didn’t affect the band’s perception of the audience. Often times with smaller, intimate venues, the performers tend to make intermissions between songs almost uncomfortably long, but Autograf, aware of the venue’s size, expressed gratitude and engaged in some small talk without dragging it out.

Autograf’s members are performers who are full of surprises.

Jake Carpenter, the man behind the drums during the performance, donned a keytar at points throughout the show. It was a surprising turn, but it he made it work. One would think that a keytar couldn’t not be cheesy, but Carpenter’s use

of the instrument would prove them wrong.

With each song, Autograf filled the venue with fantastic upbeat but chilled-out music.

As the group’s anniversary show and a Halloween gig to boot, nothing less would be expected.

formance that brought a feeling of peace and love to the venue.

Not bad for a first performance in Albuquerque.

New Mexico women’s basketball forward Kiana Keller may not be the tallest person on the team anymore, but her work ethic and strong character still stand head and shoulders above most.

After winning a program-best 13 conference games during her sophomore year, the team had a bit of a down year last season and failed to qualify for postseason play.

But the six-foot-four-inch senior said this team is mentally stronger than they were before, and ready to achieve a lot of goals.

Keller’s goals — a winning

season, a conference title and an NCAA tournament appearance — all focused on the team rather than on her as an individual.

Keller said it has been a little weird being considered a team leader, because she’s always felt like the baby on the team growing up in the program. But being the oldest of four siblings may have helped her ability to guide and mentor the younger players on the team.

She said there isn’t one player on the team that she is closer with compared to another, and they all enjoy being around each other.

“I feel like we’re all good teammates,” she said. “We spend most of our time together — probably more than we should.”

Keller, a psychology major, said her teammates would probably say that she is the person to go to if someone needed a “pickme-up.” She always seems to be happy and knows what to say to teammates, and when to say it.

Mike Bradbury, the new women’s basketball head coach, joked that if she is the team’s psychiatrist, he might need to call for her services sometimes too.

Keller said she is likely to begin grad school in the spring and hopes to find a job that makes her happy, perhaps something in counseling.

people and putting them at ease.

“She initially can be kind of shy, but once she’s comfortable, she wants everyone to be comfortable,” her mother said.

“Obviously at her height, she’s had to learn how to blend in, and it’s not always easy.”

Kim Keller said she remembered her daughter going out of her way in high school to help freshmen deal with some of the same issues she faced. She said there are not a lot of women who are so tall, and she is proud that her daughter not only found a way to deal with the challenge, but also helps make others feel comfortable too.

Keller possesses a lot of other winning qualities as well.

Bradbury perhaps paid his forward the biggest compliment, describing how hard Keller works on the court.

“I think she does work hard, I think she can lead, and from what I’ve seen, she does it by example,” he said. “She’s worked her way to where it’s going to be hard not to start her.”

He said he hoped Keller, along with six-foot-five Wright State transfer Richelle van der Keijl, can help protect the paint down low. He said he expects Keller to play a lot and have a big impact.

Keller played a lot in the first exhibition game Tuesday night, a 101-48 drubbing of Fort Lewis. She was in the starting lineup and was a presence in the paint, recording nine rebounds and rejecting three shots.

“I trust her, and the people that you trust are the ones who play,” the head coach said. “I trust that she’s going to do the right thing all the time.”

Keller said she has always had the inclination to go out and work hard, and she prides herself on defense. She said her father always told her that defense wins games, and as the tallest player on the court, she often had to defend the other team’s best player.

has a very competitive drive — something she may have inherited from her — and wants to excel at everything she tries. She said the members of the family are tall and there have been many one-on-one battles and games of “Horse.”

Although Keller is asked about it a lot, she said she’s never really played volleyball. Still, Keller was a very busy student athlete in high school, something her mother said likely prepared her well for the rigors of college.

“I trust her, and the people that you trust are the ones who play. I trust that she’s going to do the right thing all the time.”

Kim Keller said her daughter took AP classes, played three varsity sports and performed in the marching band as well. She said Keller’s trainer has been great at helping her daughter continue balancing the load and overcoming struggles over the years.

Keller said running track and cross country in high school definitely helped her on the basketball court. Although it is different, she said it helped her get into shape and gave a boost in terms of endurance.

A native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Keller said she made the decision to attend UNM, in part, because of the

weather. Winter in New Mexico is somewhat milder than what she was accustomed to.

Keller’s mom said it was a little nerve-racking for her daughter to be so far away from home, but she knew it was a great opportunity for her. She said the time has passed quickly and Keller has enjoyed meeting a variety of people and getting to experience so many different things.

Kim Keller said she has taken several trips to Albuquerque to see her daughter play, and enjoyed the atmosphere.

“I’ve come every year at Thanksgiving to see her play in the tournament,” she said. “We had an opportunity to see her play at DePaul, last year we went to the Minnesota game and this year we’re really excited that she’s playing at Marquette.”

Keller’s mother said the Pit is a very exciting environment and there is good fan attendance compared to other college games she’s attended. She said she also saw a full crowd for one of the men’s game and remembered how loud the arena was.

Keller said she had never traveled to the west coast before her collegiate career, and has enjoyed traveling with the team. She even got an opportunity to represent New Mexico and play overseas.

“I want to travel a lot more,” Keller said. “My sophomore year, in the summer, we went to Italy to play (abroad). We spent 10 days there and played four teams.”

She hasn’t made any other trips out of the country — yet.

But she said the experience was very cool and hopes do it again, perhaps getting to see former Lobo teammate Josie Greenwood in Australia one day.

Lobos look to even the score against Nevada

By Robert Maler @robert_maler New Mexico football has an opportunity to earn bowl eligibility for the second year in a row as it hosts Nevada at University Stadium on Saturday night.

The Lobos (5-3, 3-1 MW) hope to avenge a 35-17 loss that the Wolfpack (3-5, 1-3 MW) dealt them last season, one that head coach Bob Davie said is still etched in his memory.

The team is riding a three-game winning streak after outlasting Hawai’i 28-21 on Saturday, but the head coach said he isn’t even considering looking at the scope and impact of what four in a row could mean for the program.

“What happened last year in Reno, Nevada was personal — they whipped us,” Davie said. “Nothing matters other than playing this game this week.”

Last season, Nevada gashed the New Mexico defense for 351 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. The Lobos allowed two 100-yard rushes, allowing nearly seven yards per carry by the tandem.

Nevada quarterback Tyler Stewart connected on 16 of 19 passes and added a pair of touchdowns through the air too.

Davie said Nevada has a different front seven, but otherwise

most of the team is back. He said the Wolfpack are pretty impressive, especially the way they rush the passer.

Some of that advantage might be neutralized by the fact that Nevada won’t know for sure which New Mexico quarterback to prepare for.

New Mexico quarterback Lamar Jordan played the first half against Hawai’i, while Austin Apodaca came on in relief for the second half. Davie said in Tuesday’s media luncheon that he wasn’t sure which one would be starting on Saturday.

The Lobo defense has stepped up in recent weeks, putting up a scoring touchdown in back-toback weeks.

Prior to Hawai’i’s game, safety Daniel Henry said the cornerbacks and safeties have a friendly competition about who is going to make plays. Cornerback Jadon Boatright had an interception return for touchdown versus Louisiana-Monroe the previous week, and Henry said the safeties wanted to respond.

Henry caused a fumble and safety Lee Crosby scooped up the ball and ran it in for a 46 yard fumble return for touchdown.

However, Crosby also did a flip as he entered the end zone, drawing a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. The play could have turned Crosby from the

hero to the villain.

But the Lobo defense made a red zone stand to force a turnover on downs that essentially ended the game. Davie said he loves Crosby’s enthusiasm, but that he has to be better in these situations.

“You’ve heard me use the term ‘E plus R equals O,’” Davie said. “You know the event (E) happens — there’s going to be an outcome (O) — your response (R) is the thing you control.”

Davie said he and several other coaches approached Crosby after the incident. He said the safety has done some things that he later realized put the team in a vulnerable situation, but hopes he can learn from it.

Crosby is part of a defense that appears to be playing much better lately, allowing just four touchdowns over the past two games, though Hawai’i also scored off a fake field goal on special teams.

Crosby said his first visit to Hawaii was amazing, adding that the food, beautiful water and hotel on the beach all felt like something out of a movie. He said the team fell in love with the pineapples, his favorite fruit.

New Mexico’s win last week, coupled with Boise State’s 30-28 loss, put the Lobos back in contention for the top spot in the division.

situation — and the goal of winning a Mountain West championship is very much alive.

“We thank Wyoming for beating Boise State and putting us back in the hunt,” Crosby said. “We are just going to take it one game at a time and see how it plays out at the end.”

Davie seemed to echo that sentiment. With the exception of Boise State, the team has had an opportunity to win every contest and has been executing in the latter stages to find ways to win close games.

“I’m optimistic that we can play our best defensive football

down the stretch,” Davie said.

“We continue to improve. I still think we have our best ahead of us, and not everyone in the country can say that.”
