’Tis the election season

By David Lynch ASUNM Election Season is in full swing, with Early Voting having occurred on Thursday and Election Day coming up on Wednesday.

Twenty-eight candidates are vying for ten seats, with those elected to serve a full-term, or two semesters, beginning in the spring. Here is a rundown of each candidate for those who plan to make it to the polls.

LOBO PAGE TWO PATS commended for service to students Monday, November 9, 2015

On Wednesday the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico passed Resolution 2F, conveying their gratitude to Parking and Transportation Services for their work benefiting students on campus.

The legislation first had to endure some debate and discussion, however, between senators who supported the resolution and a few who didn’t believe it accurately reflected the sentiments of their constituents.

“Our job is to represent students, and one of the biggest complaints from students is parking,” said Sen. Bisaan Hanouneh, one of four who voted against the legislation.

Resolution 2F, introduced

by Sen. Delia Brennan and Sen. Brad Sedillo, was created in the wake of PATS reaching out to the undergraduate student governing body to partner up in hosting this year’s Parking Summit, to be held on Nov. 19.

The resolution recognizes

that PATS is continuously working to fulfill its mission of “providing access to key programs for faculty, students and visitors through a variety of transportation services,” despite the fact that the legislation also “recognizes the difficulty of parking conveniently on campus.”

The latter clause represented one of the primary points of contention during discussion of the resolution.

“A part of (their mission) is serving students, and I think we should commend them for that,” Brennan said. “I think it’s important to recognize that because they might get some negative feedback at this forum.”

But not all agreed that a resolution was the best way to thank PATS for their services, including Sen. Gabe Gallegos, who made a motion to remove the specific clause applauding PATS for its work.

Following some discussion on the purpose and legitimacy of the resolution without such a clause, the amend-

ment failed with a narrow vote of 9-10-0, keeping the clause in place.

In response to senators who believed the popular perception of PATS among the student body is a negative one, Sen. Ben Maggard said what students think of the department can’t easily be swayed.

“PATS is like the IRS … they’re the ‘bad guys,’” Maggard said.

“They’re going to have to do things that no one likes. But recognizing the good things that they do is just as important.”

“The fact is, we have a duty not just to the students who oppose them, but also those who support them,” he said.

Sedillo echoed Maggard’s statements, saying that parking exists as a finite resource, something that will inevitably be a problem for some students.

PATS will always be in a lose-lose situation, he said.

“The more students on campus, the more valuable parking becomes. It’s simple economics,” Sedillo said.

Later, Sen. Ryan Boyle joined

the argument and proposed to add three components with actual, tangible objectives: parking spots for pregnant students in their third trimester, for veterans and for students with dependent children ages four and under.

Although the resolution was met with almost universal praise, senators also thought those components changed the intent of Resolution 2F. “This is something that could be a separate resolution. This involves a lot more dialogue than can go on right now,” Brennan said.

Sen. Ashley Hawney expressed a similar sentiment, as well as her fear that such an amendment directs the consideration of the Senate on those particular groups of students instead of everyone.

Boyle’s amendment failed with a vote of 6-13-0.

Part of the discussion surrounding the resolution harkened back to comments made by Sedillo, who is also chair of the ASUNM committee that oversees all legislation before it moves on to the

Senate, earlier in the meeting. “(Resolutions) provide a broad range of things that ASUNM can do to support groups around campus,” he said. “The way I look at it, the most effective resolutions deal with something that affects students on a daily basis.”

In that regard, most senators saw Resolution 2F, just the second such piece of legislation presented this semester after the spring Senate oversaw 12 resolutions, as legitimate, eventually leading to its passing after about 40 minutes of discussion.

“The first step to solving a problem is recognizing a problem,” Brennan said in one of the final comments before the vote was taken. “How can we support recognizing how great (PATS) is doing if we don’t pass this thing saying we support it? Giving the official sentiment of the Senate … that’s the way to do it.”

Bill 17F, if signed by Hagengruger, would have placed responsibly on the chair of the finance committee to educate ASUNM agency directors on how to be responsible with their money.

“Not that I don’t think that the finance chair is completely competent…but the agency directors go through four layers (of training) to understand their budget,” Hagengruber said as she was explaining to the Senate her reason for vetoing the bill.

She said another workshop was essentially expendable.

A two-thirds vote by the Senate at the final senate meeting of the semester on

Nov. 18 can override the veto.

Nicolette Young have been working to ensure that the transition is smooth for whoever takes over the position.

According to the ASUNM website and creating marketing materials, updating the website and outputting press releases for local media concerning ASUNM affairs.

“I really do appreciate everyone who I’ve gotten to work with this semester. It’s been a great semester so far, but sorry I have to leave so soon,” Monroe said as he addressed the Senate at Wednesday’s meeting.

ASUNM preps second student success event After a successful Student Success Week last month, ASUNM’s executive branch is in the planning stages for a similar event for finals.

Chief of Staff Tori Pryor said that all activities are being placed

on an online scheduler that other campus groups can utilize.

“The idea with having a calendar is that not only can ASUNM plan…events, but other entities on campus that are having events that week can put them on the calendar as well,” Pryor said. “It’s a package deal.”

Pryor said to ASUNM senators at the meeting.

Other events for the upcoming Student Success Week will include help with setting spring schedules, “Operation Registration” events, study cafes and free concerts.

Search to commence for new Director of Communications Applications are now available for a new ASUNM director of communications, following the stepping down of Jordan Monroe.

Monroe said he is resigning to focus his time and effort on projects more in line with what he’d like to do after graduation, which is “working on a professional campus entity for student affairs.”

During his time as director of communications, Monroe has undertaken the task of revamping the ASUNM website to make it more easily accessible, a project that was recently completed.

“It’s been a controversy for a couple of previous years, I think it’s because in the past the government of New Mexico issued IDs to undocumented people and now they don’t want them to leave this state. ASUNM brings Arts fair to UNM

By Jenna Hagengruber It’s getting to be that time of year again. The leaves are falling, the temperature is dropping, the turkeys are being prepped for Thanksgiving and the holiday season is right around the corner.

As college students, many of us are struggling to pay our way through school, feed ourselves and pay rent. When the holidays come around, the enthusiasm we have can be shattered by the stress of finding the time and money to buy gifts for loved ones.

Well, have no fear, because ASUNM Arts and Crafts Studio has been working diligently for 52 years in order to provide vendors, both from the community and from UNM, who will come to you.

From Nov. 18 to 20, the Arts and Crafts Studio presents the 52nd annual Arts and Crafts Fair, a student-run initiative with more than 70 local vendors who provide our campus with handmade gifts. Helen Atkins, the Executive Director of Arts and Crafts Studio, went through hours of receiving applications, going through a jurying process with her staff and finally picking the vendors that would be able to come to UNM with crafts of all sorts.

What’s even cooler about this specific craft fair is that students and student organizations are allowed to participate. We have two student organizations and 8 individual students this year that were selected to be vendors. Students providing handmade crafts to other students: how awesome!

The Arts and Crafts Fair has drummed up a few events this year as well, including musical acts at noon each day. Food trucks will be outside of the SUB, both providing sustenance to us all and advertising the event. Jewelry, clothes, prints, bath products and so much more will be available at the fair, and it is all brought to you on your campus by your student government.

At ASUNM we work tirelessly to try and make sure we are representative of the entire student body in some way. Among three branches, 20 senators, eight student service agencies, scholarships, hundreds of volunteers and numerous events, our goal is to provide services and events for students from all different walks of life.

The Arts and Crafts Fair is one event that is very special. It caters to both students and community members who make handmade crafts, as well as students and community members who are going to be in attendance. Craft fairs are generally something related to the holiday season, but fear not: you don’t have to walk further than the SUB Ballrooms to attend the best Arts and Crafts Fair of the season.

For those of us who are not indigenous, how would we feel if the United States had a federal holiday celebrating someone who massacred our ancestors?

Lobos end preseason on a high note

By Alexiss Adams As the preseason comes to a close, women’s basketball Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez said she feels confident about her team’s ability to succeed going into the regular season.

The Lobos faced New Mexico Highlands for their second and final exhibition game of the preseason, in which they dominated in an 80-39 victory. The team comes off a strong first exhibition game in a 78-41 win against Western New Mexico.

“We did better than I thought, really,” Sanchez said.

“I didn’t expect blowouts by any of the teams.”

Jaisa Nunn, a 6-foot3 freshman center from Kirkland, Washington, was a particularly strong component of the Lobos on Saturday, grabbing seven rebounds and 14 points for the team.

“I was just out there having fun, so it didn’t really occur to me that I had 14 points,” she said.

Guard Cherise Beynon showed up that night as well, scoring 13 points and shooting 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

Two exhibition blowout wins can make it difficult for a team to gauge where they’re at going into the regular season.

“We are not seeing the entire extent of what we are going to face, so they are a little bit hard to evaluate,” Sanchez said.

However, Sanchez said she knows what needs work moving forward.

“The biggest thing for us is running motion,” she said. “I’m not going to limit players: If you’re open in range and your feet are set, you can shoot the ball, and I don’t want to limit that to post guards alike.”

The two wins definitely inspire confidence in the

women’s abilities as they begin the regular season.

“I think that they have worked hard, and I think that they’re ready for anything that’s coming ahead of them.”

Sanchez said. “We’re never ready, it seems like; and to start off with a team like Houston Baptist, it’s going to be fun.”

One thing is clear: the women’s basketball program is starting the 2015 season with much to look forward to.

“We haven’t done this in a long time, so I think it’s good,” Sanchez said. “It is a little tough to evaluate, but we haven’t done this in an exhibition game in a long time.”

Rams expose Lobo flaws

By Liam Carey-Eaves Colorado State’s size posed big problems for New Mexico’s offense in a 3-0 sweep at Johnson Center on Saturday night.

The Rams (21-3, 14-0 MW) showed why they are still the top team in the Mountain West after sweeping the Lobos for the second time this season.

UNM Head Coach Jeff Nelson said that although the squad didn’t perform at the high level of play it needed to against the number-one team in the conference, it wasn’t a matter of lack of effort.

“A really good team is going to expose your things,” Nelson said. “We’ve struggled with kills. We’ve got great outsides, but we’ve struggled with kills and we’ve struggled with the libero position, and both of them were exposed again tonight.”

Nelson said outside hitter Julia Warren was limited in her ability to attack the Colorado State defense, partly because

the team asked quite a bit from her defensively. The head coach added that she was forced to cheat on a number of CSU possessions in order to protect a large portion of the court.

Warren wound up with just one dig and three blocking assists, but Nelson said she was asked to do too much defensively to have any sort of success offensively.

CSU’s outside hitter Adrianna Culbert was able to put together a sound outing, collecting a double-double on the outside with 14 assists and 15 digs. She also tallied eight kills during the contest.

The Rams dominated the Lobos with a balanced attack not only from the squad’s outside hitters, but in the middle as well. Acacia Andrews, CSU’s 6-foot-5 middle blocker, took part in six blocking assists and a single solo block.

Colorado State blocked 16 total balls at the net, a major reason why UNM hit for a -.054 percentage in the three sets.

Nelson said part of the reason the Lobos struggled so much was the lack of leadership from some of his key players.

While setter Hannah Johnson put together 18 assists and nine digs, the head coach said he needed more out of everyone outside of the setter position.

“For the second match in a row our outsides underperformed in a big way,” Nelson said. “We just can’t do that.”

Outside hitter/libero Ashley Kelsey said that although the squad couldn’t put together a win on the night, the team was hustling to keep pace with the highpowered conference leader.

“I think we just got a little tense,” Kelsey said. “We bounced back in the second game... we just kept plugging and chugging, and that was our main goal: to just stay with them.”

Nelson said the Lobos (1412, 7-6 MW) will continue to search for more players to step up through the final stretch of the season. Although an NCAA bid may be out of reach, the

head coach would like to see some heightened play from the team as a whole.

“We need some leadership out of our other seniors and we need some leadership out of our three juniors that have been here for three years,” Nelson said.

Team looks for a leader to emerge

Through both of the team’s preseason exhibition games, the young UNM men’s basketball team showed its immaturity and lack of leadership, the head coach said after his team edged out Rogers State 80-69 Friday night at WisePies Arena, aka The Pit. The Lobos have just one starting senior in guard Tim Jacobs, a preferred walkon who joined the team last year and only saw significant minutes with guard Cullen Neal’s injury.

“They don’t understand the seriousness of it, and it’s my responsibility to help them understand that,” Craig Neal said. “So we’ve got a long way to go. We’ve got to get better.”

An example of where the Lobos need to improve is at the 3-point line. UNM addressed its shooting issues with the addition of some threats from range, but only Cullen Neal has connected.

Against Rogers State UNM made only six of its 24 attempts, a 25 percent clip.

game. Rogers State hovered around a five-point deficit for portions of the game, and the Hillcats made 40 percent of their field goals, trailing UNM’s shooting average by 3.1 percent.

So far, no one has stepped up to be the sort of leader that UNM had in Hugh Greenwood last year. Craig Neal isn’t just talking about the freshmen, who saw time Friday. He’s referring to the whole team.

Cullen Neal carries the capacity to lead, Craig Neal said, but it can difficult for the sophomore shooter because he’s the coach’s son and he takes a lot of criticism.

“He’s trying to make me happy. He’s trying to make his teammates happy. Who knows who else he’s trying to make happy?” Craig Neal said. “But it’s hard for him to be a leader. We have nobody else to step up and do that.

He’s the only one who’s been

here longer.”

Cullen Neal acknowledged that his situation is different because of his relationship with the coach, but he has been trying to do what he can in a leadership capacity.

He said players have come to him with questions, including freshman center Nikola Scekic staying until 1 a.m. going over plays.

Other players who have been with the team for a while, like forward Devon

Williams and center Obij Aget, have yet to step up to fill that leadership role, the coach said.

It’s possible, Craig Neal said, but all the players must be on the same page.

“You all have to be doing the same thing,” he said. “They have to play selfless basketball, and for them to do that takes a lot. Hopefully they’ll learn that and get better.”

They need a leader who can instill confidence, Cullen Neal said — somebody talkative and supportive of the rest of the cast. Guard Elijah Brown has been demonstrating signs of that, he said.

Cullen Neal came away with 20 points against Rogers State, three days after netting 33 against CSU-Pueblo. He also cut his turnovers in half from the previous exhibition to four.

Forward Tim Williams joined Cullen Neal in doublefigure scoring with 13 points and eight rebounds. The first two exhibition games were Williams’ first as a Lobo after missing all of last season due to transfer eligibility requirements. Williams said it’s good to get back out on the hardwood for game action.

“I didn’t get tired sitting on the bench,” he said. “Just getting that wind back and getting back in playing shape will be a big thing for me.”

Brown added 10 for the Lobos. Guard J.C. Hartzler led Rogers State with 17 points, followed by Travis Hester with 15 and Donald Moore with 11.

UNM led the exhibition wire-to-wire, but didn’t build its largest lead until the game had 4:35 minutes remaining (15 points). The Lobo bench scored 33 points.

Lobos find lucky breaks against Utah State

By Liam Cary-Eaves Sometimes it takes more than skill to garner a victory. New Mexico’s defense kept UNM in Saturday’s game against Utah State, but Head Coach Bob Davie said the Lobos were due for some good fortune during the squad’s 14-13 victory.

The game was by no means a fluke, Davie said. But if it weren’t for some favorable bounces, a missed field goal and timely penalties, things could have been different for New Mexico late in the contest.

“The football gods smiled on us again,” Davie said. “Certainly that kid was capable of making that field goal; certainly David Anaya recovering that football off the return, us recovering the punt — but I think we deserve it.”

Anaya, a senior running back, was right in the thick of it all. With the Lobos hanging on to a slim 7-3 lead in the third quarter, Anaya raced down the field during a 52yard punt to tackle Utah State’s Andrew Rodriguez with a full head of steam, knocking the ball loose and allowing UNM to recover it at the 3-yard line.

up Richard McQuarley with a three-yard touchdown run, the last time UNM would be able to facilitate a score.

However, that was not the only timely effort Anaya gave on the night. Late in the fourth quarter, after Utah State cut the lead to 14-13, wide receiver Carlos Wiggins tried to make a play on the ensuing kickoff return, and ended up losing the ball.

Anaya hustled from across the field into a huge scrum of players, and somehow wound up with the ball.

Pulling out these late victories only gives confidence to the team, Anaya said. The change in fortunes from previous years has boosted team morale.

“In the past we’ve had problems with these close games,” Anaya said. “Now that we’ve done it against Hawaii and now Utah State, it really gives us a lot of confidence to play well and come into the next games playing well and playing with the hype.”

In UNM’s earlier home victory against Hawaii, Rainbow Warrior’s kicker Rigoberto Sanchez made his first miss of the year on a 22-yard attempt.

quarter, his field goal resume also unscathed in the 2015 season. Warren pushed the 41 yarder to the right, sealing the deal for UNM. UNM quarterback Lamar Jordan said he was anticipating that something would go awry for the Aggie kicker, even though he hadn’t missed all year.

“I knew something was going to happen,” he said.

Davie said the mishaps that have seemed to plague the Lobos in previous years are finally beginning to change for the better, something he said is well warranted.

“I think we deserve to

UNM’s defense shores up offensive shortcomings

New Mexico’s defense has finally reached its potential.

After weeks of inconsistent play, the Lobos’ defense shut down Utah State in a 14-13 win at University Stadium on Saturday.

UNM made several big plays and held USU to just 294 total yards of offense.

USU had a chance to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but kicker Brock Warren missed a 41yard field goal to give UNM (5-4, 3-2 Mountain West) the win.

“Defensively, (it was) probably the best game we’ve played since we’ve been here,” head coach Bob Davie said. “We finally put it together enough and executed enough that we had a chance to win.”

UNM’s defense came up huge in stopping the run. USU rushed for just 78 yards on 37 attempts, which is about 104 yards less than its season average.

Another reason UNM’s defense was so successful was that it held when it needed to.

The Lobos came up with two key fourth-down stops while the Aggies were deep in Lobo territory in the first half. Safety Daniel Henry also came up with a huge fumble recovery late in the fourth quarter with USU in scoring position after intercepting quarterback Austin Apodaca.

“It’s amazing. It’s an awesome feeling to go out there finally playing together,” linebacker Dakota Cox said. “The defense went out there and played with

the guy next to him. We owned our individual space and everyone did their job and executed.”

However, the defensive effort might have been wasted if not for running back David Anaya. He didn’t tally any offensive yards and even went 0-1 passing, but he made a couple of big plays on special teams.

Anaya’s first game-changing play came on a punt return, when he knocked the ball loose from USU wide receiver Andrew Rodriguez’s grip, which ended up being recovered by Lobo tight end Reece White. On the very next play, Richard McQuarely pushed UNM’s lead to 14-3 with

a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The next play by Anaya might have saved the game for the Lobos. After USU cut UNM’s lead to 14-13, wide receiver Carlos Wiggins fumbled the ensuing kickoff return and Anaya somehow came away with the ball. The refs reviewed the play extensively to make sure that Anaya had actually recovered the fumble.

“We played well enough to win. It wasn’t a fluke,” Davie said. “They certainly had their opportunities, so it’s fun. It’s a big win for us. It’s a good feeling.”

UNM’s first points came

in the second quarter, when quarterback Lamar Jordan scrambled, then pulled up to hit a wide-open Delane HartJohnson for a career-long 86-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead.

The dual quarterback system didn’t fare well for UNM. Jordan started the game and went 2 of 5 for 97 yards and a touchdown, while Apodaca had just 7 yards, completing 2 of 5 attempts with an ugly interception.

Overall, the Lobo offense never did get going against the Aggies.

UNM finished with just 236 total yards of offense, with 132 of those yards coming on the ground.

“Again, their defense over-

whelmed us a number of times,” Davie said, “particularly when they knew when we were going to throw. We had a hard time protecting.”

The Aggies’ (5-4, 4-2 MW) only touchdown of the game came in the third quarter, when quarterback Kent Myers hit a diving Rodriguez for a 24-yard touchdown. Myers went 13 of 24 for 213 yards with that lone score.

With the win, UNM is just one win away from becoming bowleligible. The last time the Lobos went to a bowl game was in 2007.

“Like I said before, it builds our confidence going into these last three games,” Cox said. “I think we made a statement tonight, and our defense can continue to get better and play hard. This whole team is coming together. I’m proud of this team of stepping up, and it’s an awesome feeling.”

Carson suspended

The Mountain West announced on Sunday that linebacker Kimmie Carson will be suspended for the first half of New Mexico’s upcoming game at Boise State.

Carson is suspended for a hit that was to the head and neck area of a defenseless player. That hit came in the second quarter against Utah and resulted in a personal foul penalty.

New Mexico stamps ticket to C-USA tourney

By Isabel Gonzalez The Lobos season is not yet over following a crucial 3-0 win over the Florida Atlantic Owls on Senior Night Friday.

With this win the Lobos clinched their spot in this year’s Conference USA tournament.

It was an important win, but by no means an easy one, especially since the first half was not so hot for the Lobos.

Both teams recorded four shots during this period.

However, FAU had two shots on goal, while New Mexico had none. The Lobos had a few chances, but weren’t able to finish them.

“The start of the game, we hit the post, what, three times?” head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “You keep saying ‘there’s no way it’s going to be one of those days.

Eventually they are going to find the net.’”

In the 17th minute midfielder Chris Wehan took a shot that was too wide on the left side. Then in the 22nd minute forward Niko Hansen took a shot that hit the crossbar.

The second half was completely different. By the end of the half, the Lobos lead 19-6 in total shots and 11-0 in corner kicks. The Lobos saw a lot of action throughout, but

all three goals were scored within the last 20 minutes of the match.

Defender Nicholas Rochowski scored a goal in the middle of the period, but was declared offside and it didn’t count.

“It’s just the way of the game.

The ref calls it and that’s it, we have to get back and play,” Rochowski said. “It didn’t take away much; everyone got really excited, we got the feeling of getting the goal, so we wanted to feel it again.”

Rochowski scored again in the 72nd minute, putting his team 1-0 ahead of the Owls.
