A man jumps in joy as he sees the result of the presidential race in Florida, a key battleground state, on Tuesday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Students watch as Cinderella story unfolds Optimism turns to a new reality for Clinton supporters By Gabriela Garcia Huff @thegreen_gablin With tensions at an all-time high for many in the country, some students chose to spend Election Night among their peers, watching the results roll in at the Student Union Building, as it became more evident that Republican candidate Donald Trump would win the presidency. The event, which was organized by ASUNM Governmental Affairs, represented an unbiased neutral venue for students. “The Millennial generation came out in record numbers this election, proving the notion that college-aged students are getting involved at a faster rate than ever,” said Nathan Cowan, di-

rector of Governmental Affairs. “ASUNM GA wanted to provide a non-partisan avenue to watch this historic event.” With phones out and Twitter feeds constantly refreshing, there was an almost tangible feeling of unease in the air, at the flagship university of a predominantly blue state. Audible reactions could be heard as the vote totals for each poll were being reported, and the winner of each battleground state announced. Bibiana Seng, a junior mathematics major, sat near the front of the crowd, chatting animatedly with a group friends while keeping updated on her phone. “We’ve all been checking different sources and talking about things that are going on. checking Google, I’ve been checking Buzzfeed, FiveThirtyEight, all the sites,” she said. Amanda Drake, a sophomore pre-art studio major sitting next to Seng, seemed apprehensive as early projections for North Carolina and Nevada sprawled across the screen. “(Donald) Trump has been about excluding so many people,” she said. “I’m scared for my life and I’m scared for my friends’ lives.” The majority of the crowd seemed to be supporting Hillary Clinton, with reactions becoming more and more lively as Trump began to rack up electoral and popular vote totals throughout the night. @notgraybrendon Nearly 50 percent of New Mexico voters came out in support of Hillary Clinton in Tuesday’s general election. Though Clinton took home the state’s five electoral votes, she came 42 electoral votes short of securing the necessary 270 to put a cap on what has been a historic campaign. The Clinton campaign started Tuesday night with enthusiasm as many reputable national polls had her hovering at about 75 percent odds of becoming the first female nominee of a major party to win the Oval Office. Though losing in the electoral count, Clinton came out on top in the popular vote by a narrow margin after it was all said and done, edging out President-elect Donald Trump

with 59,861,038 votes to 59,638,006. The House of Representatives and Senate will also be controlled by Republicans after key downballot races ended in their favor on Tuesday. Despite the loss, Clinton’s bid was full of historic milestones. After announcing her run for presidency in April of 2015, and a fierce battle with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders for the nomination, she clinched the bid at the Democratic National Convention, shattering the metaphorical glass ceiling she vowed in 2008 to eventually break. Five months later, Clinton was predicted to dominate in the Nov. 8 general election. Enlivened by her platform, supporters looked with optimism and jubilation to her ambitious plan to address climate change, reform
