Thursday, D ecember 7, 2017 | Vo l u m e 1 2 2 | I s s u e 3 2 The smell of aged leather and wood drifts through the air of Aaron Boyd’s Tres Cuervos studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. With the hands of a skilled craftsman, Boyd cuts pieces of leather with swift precision to begin working on one of his signature pieces — men’s wallets. After discovering his knack for design and leatherwork, Boyd decided to make Tres Cuervos his career, abandoning his life as a government contractor. Boyd traveled around the country in a converted Airstream to showcase his leatherwork to different vendors. Currently, Boyd is based in Santa Fe and sells his merchandise in select stores in Albuquerque. Boyd never saw himself working as a leather craftsman, but he said he believes “you have to stay open in life to opportunities. When things change, you can always make something great out of it.”

For years, my mom has been collecting old postcards depicting different locations across New Mexico. I completely forgot about them until I was cleaning one day. I looked through my mom’s binders of postcards and was intrigued by how things used to look around Albuquerque. I decided to recreate some of the more iconic postcards in her collection. During the process of making my story, I was surprised to see how many of the original buildings are still standing with little to no change. Albuquerque has a long history — and through that history our very own 505 has gone through a few facelifts, many of these landmark buildings, such as the Kimo Theater and the stone house atop of the Sandia Mountains, remain untouched by time. On the other hand, buildings such as the old U.S. Post Office and the original Albuquerque High School have been repurposed into Amy Biehl High School and new residential lofts. I cannot wait to continue this project and see how time continues to change the Land of Enchantment.

When I began studying journalism, I wanted to cover something completely different from what I have covered before. From state politics to competitive video games, the University of New Mexico expanded my mind and broadened my interests. An internship with KNME gave me the opportunity to eat, sleep and breathe local politics. The competitive nature of two candidates locked into deep debate became something I craved — something I wanted to watch. The 2017 mayoral election was something I quickly wanted to participate in, something I wanted to remember. I swiftly learned as an observer that I, more importantly, must become a contributor. My credibility and confidence would only grow, because how I participate in the community as a photographer matters. The photos in this collection are a glance at Tim Keller’s incremental journey to represent the city of Albuquerque as mayor. The essay is a culmination of coverage, beginning from the early days of his campaign, before earning placement on the ballot with eight other candidates, all the way to the traditional transition lunch between the incoming and outgoing mayors. The race for mayor is an exercise of persistence and tactile positioning: something I tried to emulate from the viewfinder of a camera. Kevin Maestas is a staff photographer at the Daily Lobo. After Agent Orange By Autumn Sage King || @autumnsagekingg In 1969 my grandfather, Charles Love Mullins V, was deployed to Vietnam. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft maintenance officer. During that time, the military was using Agent Orange to poison trees and shrubbery to easily spot and track the Viet Cong, but the United States was unaware of the life-changing effects this chemical would have on its own military. In 2003 my grandfather retired from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which was most likely caused by his exposure to Agent Orange. The U.S. government has recognized that many military personnel contracted diseases like Parkinson’s from exposure to this chemical without proper protection. There is a small stipend that each affected individual is granted, but money does not offer a cure, a solution or the slightest bit of compensation when it comes to the suffering this disease caused my grandfather and family. A side effect of Parkinson’s is Lewy body dementia, which causes proteins to build in the brain, leading to erratic behavior, hallucinations, drastic memory loss and losing the capability to form complete thoughts. I watched a man who could once tell me about anything — from military aircrafts to types of birds that are native to New Mexico — become incapable of telling me his name or what city he was in. To watch him suffer was heartbreaking. Throughout all of it he was so strong, never complaining, just happy to see us. He passed away on Nov. 26, 2017. I am so grateful for the time I was able to spend with this amazing man. Autumn Sage King is a freelance photographer for the Daily Lobo. NEW MEXICO DAILY LOBO

In the string of things By Brontë Procell Robertson and Sons is a nationally renowned bowed string instrument shop located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. For more than 40 years, the shop has served the community and developed into a dealer of both rare and contemporary instruments and bows. Robertson and Sons is also home to an acclaimed restoration and repair department. The store houses three show rooms — one for violins and violas, one for cellos and one for basses. There is also a recital hall where clients can test out the instruments they are interested in. I was able to enter the repair shop, where I witnessed true magic. An extremely old cello was being reshaped in a cast, as it had become dented over the years of use; a scroll was being carved; a bow that had been run over by a car was being pieced back together. The dedication and detail that are put into each piece are incredible and commendable. Brontë Procell is a freelance photographer for the Daily Lobo.
