ASUNM fails ‘stunning’ resolution

By Denicia Aragon Associated Students of UNM has blocked a proposal to allow people to carry stun guns on campus property.

At its Wednesday meeting, ASUNM ultimately decided against Resolution 3S, a piece of legislation backed by three self-described conservative student organizations - Young Americans for Liberty at UNM, Young Americans for Freedom and UNM College Republicans - and introduced by Senators Andrew Pierce, Ben Maggard and Randy Ko. “We are doing our best to try to represent student wishes, trying to submit this resolution in hopes that we will better represent student wishes and allowing them

[to] be able to defend themselves,” Pierce said.

Pierce made it clear that the policy would allow stun guns - not tasers - on campus. The two are often confused for each other but are different, he said.

“The big difference is that taser guns fire two probes to complete a circuit of [an] arc of electricity through the assailant’s body, then causing the assailant pain and spontaneous muscle contractions.

The hand held stun guns create an arc of electricity that is often enough to deter an attacker alone,” Pierce said.

Senator Bisaan Hanouneh, who voted against the resolution, said the background facts do not support the legislation.

“Talking about why this resolution - not the idea, but the

resolution itself - is not ready to be passed; the biggest reason is it doesn’t support its reasoning.

The data says a lot about the crime that happens on campus, how the number of aggravated assaults have increased, and all these different increases of crime that [are] happening, but they don’t actually say how the stun guns will help that.

There is no information backing up saying that, yes, [stun guns] will help these problems occurring,” she said.

During discussion of the resolution, Maggard, who had been the instigating senator for the resolution, withdrew his support, citing lack of research.

“We have not yet gathered enough information from the student body. I do not feel this legislation fits the opinion of the student body and do not feel comfortable

passing this legislation,” he said.

Senator Justin Cooper, who opposed the resolution, said the 21 people in the student organizations sponsoring the resolution are not enough to represent the views of the thousands of students attending UNM. Members of Young Americans For Liberty at UNM reacted to Cooper’s comment with a Facebook post that evening, in which they decried the senator’s remarks as hypocritical.

“Associated Students of the University of New Mexico Senator Justin Cooper made a comment during debate on the Stun Gun Resolution that has been communicated back to me, apparently Young Americans For Liberty at UNM and our partner organizations don’t matter because there’s ‘only 21 of the sponsors of

us’ (there are more than that in YAL alone),” according to the post.

“There are ‘only’ 20 senators in ASUNM, many of which were not elected to their positions. Screw the minority right?”

Young Americans for Liberty, Young Americans for Freedom and UNM College Republicans have since begun a campaign to remove Cooper from ASUNM. A rally will be hosted today in Smith Plaza at 11 a.m. Representatives for the three groups also wrote letters to the Daily Lobo about the experience; those can be found on page 5.

New branding captures Lobo spirit

Associated Stideunts of UNM teamed up with University Communication and Marketing, to celebrate 127 years of UNM while introducing some rebranding to the University.

Jordan Scott, executive director of LoboSpirit, said the celebration this year was special due to possibilities the collaboration with UCAM provided.

“They helped design flyers and the tshirts as well as purchase them,” she said.

“So we were able to get more shirts and kind of help with the whole rebranding unveiling on the undergraduate level.”

The shirts are a direct result of the rebranding initiative being done by UCAM, Scott said. Recently, UCAM surveyed more than 800 students on campus and asked: “What do you think of when you think of UNM?” With this question in mind, the shirts were designed to be red and white, with a blank space for students to write, in their own words, what it means to them to be a Lobo.

“So, the idea is, what kind of Lobo are you?” Scott said. “It’s just, kind of, make it your own and make it your own individual experience. Because one of [UCAMs] little stanzas or sayings is, ‘individuals together,’ and I think that’s reiterated with diversity and everything like that at this campus.”

As a transfer student from another country, Scott said she knows UNM has one of the most diverse campuses in the country.

In addition to the t-shirts, festivities included postcards, a photo booth and refreshments as well as the annual atrium photo, which will hang outside Chick-Fil-A in the SUB. ASUNM President Jenna Hagengruber said UNM Day is important to celebrate.

“It is not only allowing students to appreciate the 127th birthday of the University of New Mexico, but it fosters an environment that is allowing students to celebrate a school, community and group of people that have given so much to them,” she said. “On top of that, free cake and

singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to a school that has been creating better lives for 127 years is always enjoyable.”

Hagengruber said, to her, being a Lobo means being part of a community that is focused on both the individual and the whole.

“It means that I am part of a family that is 25,000 students large, and that I am supported as a unique member of such a diverse group of people that make up the

University of New Mexico,” she said. “To be a Lobo means that I am appreciated for who I am, what I do and why I love the University, no matter what that may be. I wouldn’t want to be anything other than a UNM Lobo.”

Scott said she encourages student input on the annual celebration and, as an ASUNM event, if there was ever a time where a student has a concern about it or wants to add something, they should

voice that opinion.

“We use their student fees and I think that needs to be known a little bit more, that all these different agencies in ASUNM, we do everything because the students allow us to,” she said.

Lottery scholarship survives another year

With 2016’s 30-day Legislative Session finally at an end, University of New Mexico students can rest in peace knowing that the Legislative Lottery Scholarship is safe ... that is, at least for the next fiscal year.

As it currently stands, the Lottery Scholarship, which was created 20 years ago by Sen. Michael Sanchez to help create access to education for New Mexico students, is facing a cliff in the upcoming year. If changes weren’t made to the amount of revenue for the Lottery Scholarship Fund, the scholarship would go from subsidizing 90-95 percent of UNM lottery recipients’ tuition in school year 2016-17 to 60-65 percent of tuition in school year 2017-18, a drastic 30 percent reduction.

To attempt to protect our students from what would be a very harsh blow to their bank accounts, ASUNM teamed up with ASNMSU and the NM Tech SGA (the student governments from both NMSU and NM Tech.) We came up with ideas to help create solvency for the Lottery Scholarship and spent many hours in Santa Fe lobbying for YOUR access to education.

Although there were various Senate and House Bills revolving around the Lottery Scholarship, some that we were in favor of and others that we were not, only one was passed this year. Senate Bill 79, sponsored by Sen. Sanchez, was

passed by the Senate and states that unclaimed lottery prizes, which have been approximately $2.85 million over the past five years, would be transferred to the Lottery Tuition Fund rather than remaining in the hands of the New Mexico Lottery Authority.

This would result in an approximate seven percent increase in deposits for the Lottery Scholarship, which is roughly $90 per student. ASUNM is in support of this and we are now joining forces with ASNMSU and NM Tech SGA in order to urge Gov. Susana Martinez to sign this bill into law.

Although there wasn’t much progress in the full solvency of the Lottery Scholarship this year, large steps were taken to have those difficult conversations, and ASUNM will not stop fighting for YOUR access to education.

We will be hosting a Lottery Think Tank in April to continue discussion on solvency and to brainstorm further ideas we can take forward to the Legislature next year. More information will be available about this event in the upcoming month.

LETTER Administration’s poor management threat to UNM Editor, Yet again, the upper administration is underestimating the University community and the state in general. When asked when the University would start investing in the human capital here, President Frank’s flippant response (that hinted at a threat) was that we have to “make sure we can keep our doors open.”

This University has operated for 127

years, and for him to believe New Mexicans will allow this, the premier university in the state, to close its doors, is a mistake. Under his and the current leadership, there is a threat of closing our doors.

How about we close our doors to you, the “leaders”? If you cannot lead and manage appropriately, take your luxury cars, drive out of here and let us handle your mess for you, which is what we normally do after a reign of administrators that mismanage this University.

Unfortunately, as debate carried on at the meeting, it became clear that many senators were letting their political beliefs color their stance on the bill. Most disappointingly, these beliefs led to personal attacks and to some senators completely ignoring their duty to represent all students. This culminated in Sen. Justin Cooper’s final comments before the vote, when he completely dismissed the

co-sponsorships of YAF, the UNM Young Americans for Liberty and the UNM College Republicans. Sen. Cooper said our groups’ stances should be essentially ignored because our membership is not large enough to merit consideration. He mocked the conservative groups on this campus and the members that make up our groups.

By calling on his fellow senators to ignore our stance on the matter, he mocked the work we have done towards increasing student safety and the right of students to protect themselves. To Sen. Cooper, apparently we do not matter. This is not the kind of representation any individual or student group on UNM’s campus should expect.

These comments are not becoming of an ASUNM senator, let alone a finance chair. For those reasons, the UNM Young Americans for Freedom are joining with former Sen. Ryan Boyle and the UNM Young Americans for Liberty in calling for Sen. Justin Cooper to resign his position as ASUNM Senator. We hope that Senator Cooper’s replacement will prove to be more interested in representing all students and groups on campus than Sen. Cooper has proven to be with his statements.

Although this common sense resolution did not pass, what really infuriated myself and numerous members of Young Americans for Liberty that were in the media and gallery seating during the debate on the issue, was a statement made by ASUNM Senator and Finance Committee Chairman Justin Cooper.

Cooper exclaimed that our groups, Young Americans for Liberty, Young Americans for Freedom and the College Republicans

do not matter. How dare a sitting student senator tasked with representing the student population decide who matters and who doesn’t?

Sen. Cooper has made a statement in an open debate that shows his inability to objectively represent student organizations. As a student senator, and especially as the the finance chairman, Cooper’s inability to remain impartial is questionable.

Will Young Americans for Liberty, Young Americans for Freedom and the College Republicans not matter when it comes time

for our budget hearings?

Young Americans for Liberty, UNM’s largest and most active conservative student organization, is openly calling for Senator Justin Cooper’s resignation. We need student senators who realize every student organization matters, regardless of political ideology or size of the student groups. Shame on Senator Cooper.

Many in ASUNM who voted against it had either voted for or supported last semester’s propepper spray resolution, which was passed unanimously, but couldn’t successfully defend why they would want students to continue to feel unsafe this semester.

Student safety is more important than a vote from ASUNM.

The more troubling issue from Wednesday night’s debate is ASUNM Senator Justin Cooper’s dismissive remarks about the three student organizations that co-sponsored the resolution. The student organizations that co-sponsored the resolution have worked tirelessly to improve safety on campus and ensure student rights are protected.

Cooper’s remarks about the membership of these groups are inexcusable and clearly

demonstrate that he does not think all students should be represented.

I am calling for Cooper’s resignation for his failure to comply with his oath as an ASUNM Senator, and for mocking students during Wednesday night’s debate over the resolution.

Budget takes a hit, University hopes to mitigate cuts

By Sayyed Shah Last week, UNM President Bob Frank informed attendees of a town hall that the University is facing budget cuts as a result of the recently-finished state legislative session, briefing a mix of students, staff and faculty on the tough competition for state dollars this year.

“They have taken money out of our current budget and they also have cuts for the forthcoming year,” he said.

UNM will receive a total reduction of 0.6 percent from the current budget, Frank said, meaning a total recession of $1.9 million dollars for the University.

The recessions are really difficult to deal with, he said, as universities and higher education institutions across the state also face budget cuts in the forthcoming year.

“We have already put all the money out to the units, and everybody thinks everything is okay, and then all of a sudden, we are saying everything is not okay, we are taking some money back,” Frank said. “As you can see, about 2.4 percent [was] out of our [infrastructure and government]. All universities (and) higher education institutions have that much taken from their budgets.”

Frank said since UNM is the biggest university in the state, which means is also has a big budget, it always faces risk of cuts in terms of dollars.

“We will be down by $7.9 million next year from where we have been.

Unfortunately that is not the end of the bad news,” he said.

The increase in the cost of utilities, healthcare and power plants will further dent the UNM budget, Frank said, to the tune of $5.8 million.

Frank said the legislature has reserved the right to take out 1.2 percent from the next year’s budget if oil prices continue to go down.

“The cuts were done when oil was $26 a barrel and now oil is $32 a barrel. If the oil prices continue to go up towards higher 30s, we will be okay.

But if the oil price plummets, we will be in trouble,” he said. “Analysts say that 2017 will be a variable year for oil cost. So it is really hard to predict where the oil prices will end up. In 2018, oil should stabilize.”

He said temporary solutions are not going to solve this problem, but that the University will continue its efforts for student success initiatives and will make principlebased decisions to overcome the impacts of these cuts.

“It is important that we must not step back on student success initiatives. We also believe that we need to prioritize student activities. We don’t intend to cut student TAs, GAs and those kinds of things that interact with students,” he said.

Frank said he recognized that with a cut this big, there is going to be some pain.

“There is no way we can get through this without some dislocation and some difficulties.

We are going to work on investment in student success. We need to grow our online degree. We will also continue our efforts to get a general obligation bond that comes out in November,” he said.

“I know we have to make cuts, but it seems to me that we actually have some opportunities here that we could leverage. We have students, and we have de-

partments, that teach all sorts of things. It means that they can contribute so many things, if we could find a way to utilize these initiatives into revenue making fields,” Barker said.

Provost Chaouki Abdallah said that, keeping annual recession in mind, the University needs to add another $10 million in revenue.

“It’s tough in New Mexico. It’s tough everywhere. In [the] public higher education sphere every-

one is facing the same problem. A lot of higher education institutions are exploring new avenues to increase their revenue to make [up] for the loss of funding from state and to make up for the pressure of tuition,” he said.

Sluggish offensive night for Lobos

By Liam Cary-Eaves It took the Lobos 30 minutes to get any sort of offensive production against Fresno State on Saturday afternoon.

The slow start plagued New Mexico, who dropped the contest 51-43 in Fresno, California, despite a fourth quarter offensive surge.

The offense was led by forward Khadijah Shumpert, who put together a sound 22 point and nine rebound showing in the loss.

Through the first three quarters, UNM was only able to muster 19 points before putting up 24 in the last 10 minutes of the game.

New Mexico ended up shooting over 31 percent in the game, not much worse than Fresno State’s 32.7 percentage from the field.

The Bulldogs also turned the ball over more than the Lobos by a 20-19 margin, but the first three quarters, where UNM trailed 38-19, were just too much to overcome.

One of the problem areas for the Lobos was at the charity stripe. New Mexico had 12 opportunities at the line in the contest, sinking only five of those shots. Fresno State shot 16-

21 from the free throw line.

Head coach Yvonne Sanchez has said throughout the season that the women have been working on getting their free throw percentages up, but the foul line proved to be a troublesome spot again for the squad.

Forward Alexa Chavez had a rough night during her 17 minutes of play. After a nagging foot injury limited her playing time, she was unable to make any of her five shots.

She ended her day with just one point and four boards.

Guard Cherise Beynon was able to put together another double-digit scoring night with 12 points, but she shot just 5 for 17 from the field.

The loss leaves the Lobos (1413, 7-9 MW) in sixth place. If that placement holds, New Mexico will have to play in the first round of the conference tournament.

Though Sanchez said she would prefer to sit the first round of the conference tournament out with a bye, she said the team is capable of winning four, if need be.

With two games left in conference, it appears that UNM may have to win four straight games come tournament time, barring a

Defense comes up short again in fourth quarter

By Thomas Romero-Salas New Mexico’s defensive effort continued to fall off on Saturday.

For the third straight game, UNM’s defense in the second half became problematic. Fresno State took advantage of the Lobos’ lack of effort for a 92-82 win at WisePies Arena.

UNM has allowed opponents to score an average of 49 points in the second half of the past three games, resulting in a three-game losing streak. After spending most of the Mountain West season near the top of the standings, UNM now sits in fifth place with two games left in the regular season.

Head coach Craig Neal said the team still isn’t putting enough work in on the defensive end.

“I’m trying to convince them that they’re going to be able to score points, but are they going to be able to stop anybody?” Neal said. “That’s my battle with them. I’m trying to teach them to guard and play defense as a team. We have a lot of breakdowns on team defense.”

The game might have gotten out of hand much sooner if guard Elijah Brown hadn’t kept UNM alive. Brown tallied half of the Lobos’ point total with a careerhigh of 41 points on 13 of 23 attempts and 11 boards.

More than half of Brown’s points (27) came in the second half when UNM was desperate to keep the game close.

“We’re going to have to do some things team-wise. We have to get more ball movement,” Neal said.

“The problem that we have with our

offense is that it’s one side. We’re not attacking both sides of the floor, we’re not sharing the ball and we’re not getting people the ball.”

Fresno State (20-9, 11-5 Mountain West) battled back from a double-digit deficit in the first half to take control of the game. In the second half, the Bulldogs used a 9-2 run to retake the lead late and keep the game out of reach for the Lobos.

UNM (16-13, 9-7 MW) was able to cut Fresno State’s edge to just five points over the last 6:30, but was unable to make stops when it needed them the most.

“I think part of it was we weren’t able to execute what the coaches were trying to have us do. But I think all of that falls back on effort,” Brown said. “We knew what to do and weren’t able to get

back to shooters. A lot of it came down to effort and urgency.”

The Bulldogs had four doubledigit scores with guard Marvelle Harris leading the way with 32 points on 10 of 22 shots. Harris didn’t have much resistance getting to the rim and made plays throughout the game. He hit 11 of 17 free throws and had 10 assists with zero turnovers.

Guard Julien Lewis was Fresno State’s second leading scorer with 21 points, hitting 8 of 11 attempts.

UNM’s Tim Williams had 18 points on 7 of 9 shots, but only two of those were in the second half.

Aget injured Neal said after the game that center Obij Aget hurt his knee taking the jump ball to start the game.

Aget also got into foul trouble early and played just 11 minutes.

“He hurt his knee on the jump ball. He could never get back,” Neal said. “He had a bone bruise on his knee cap. He didn’t look comfortable or feel well.”

Lobos complete sweep over Wichita

By Liam Cary-Eaves New Mexico’s offense again paved the way for New Mexico as the Lobos snagged the series sweep against Wichita State on Sunday afternoon.

The offense was able to produce eight runs to support UNM’s starting pitcher James Harrington in his second win of the season as the Lobos garnered an 8-6 victory in the final game.

New Mexico (6-1) has facilitated at least six runs in each win this season. Over the weekend, UNM plated at least eight runs in each game during the three-game home opening stretch.

While the Lobos were forced to play small ball on Saturday to get the offense going, New Mexico struck quickly on Sunday.

A six-run second inning was jump-started by a leadoff homer from first baseman Jack Zoellner.

The rally showcased 11 Lobo batters and set the tone for the remainder of the game.

Even though New Mexico’s offense was on point, UNM’s bullpen was again exposed. Head coach Ray Birmingham has said that the tail end of games has been a problem area early in the young season.

He said after Saturday’s 8-4 win that he is looking for someone to step up into the vital relief role.

Redshirt outfielder Reece Weber was another one of the Lobo hitters to make some noise at the

plate, going 3-for-4 to improve his average to .333 on the season.

The season sweep comes one year after the Lobos were swept in Kansas during the 2015 campaign.

UNM will stay in town as they host Dallas Baptist on Friday evening to start another threegame set.

UNM can’t hold on to conference crowns

New Mexico’s track and field team failed to defend their conference crown at the Albuquerque Convention Center in the Mountain West Indoor Championships, but still turned in strong performances facilitating individual titles.

Despite the men’s run of three straight and the women’s streak of back-to-back conference championships ending, head coach Joe Franklin said he was pleased with the way the team competed.

Both squads finished in fourth place overall. The men scored in nearly every event and tallied 101 points for the meet, which Franklin said exceeded expectations. And the women accumulated 65 points over the three-day event.

“We had some really good performances,” he said. “It was a really good track meet across the board.”

Jannell Hadnot topped the field in the women’s triple jump. Her mark of 42 feet, 2 inches earned her an indoor conference title in the event. She is one of a handful Lobos that have put themselves in contention for a chance to compete at the national championships.

Allan Hamilton competed and scored in multiple events, which garnered him an outstanding performer award. He successfully defended his men’s long jump title, jumping 25 feet 3 1/2 inches.

Teammates Yannick Roggatz and Samuel Trigg finished in second and fifth place with marks of 25 feet 1/2 inches and jumped of and 2nd place Yannick Roggatz 25 feet 1/2 inches and 23 feet 2 1/2 inches, respectively.

The head coach said one of the performances that stood out was Ridge Jones’ 60-meter dash.

Franklin said Jones had not been at the level he was last year, and that his run showed a lot of promise for the outdoor season.

Jones seemed excited after turning in

the top time of 6.69 seconds.

“It feels real great,” Jones said.

“This year hasn’t been going as good as it should’ve been for me, but I managed to pull it off.”

New Mexico did well in distance running again as Sophie Connor and Calli Thackery placed first and second in the women’s 1-mile run.

Connor completed the run in 4:45.76 and Thackery did so in 4:45.79.

In the men’s 1-mile, Elmar Engholm finished seventh with a time of 4:16.86 in the mile, and came back to run a lifetime best of 1:50.03 in the men’s 800-meter run to finish in

second place. Franklin said Engholm has never ran multiple events in one meet well before the championships.

“I told him after the race, ‘You’ve finally arrived,”’ Franklin said. “It was very positive for him. He’s arrived as a distance runner.”

Franklin said the rest of the conference has continued to close the gap and continues to get better. He said Holly Van Grinsven ran essentially the same time that won the women’s 200-meter run last year, but finished fourth with a time of 54.42 this year Van Grinsven also scored by placing third in the 60-meter hurdles with

a time of 8.36 and was part of the 1600-meter relay team, which ran 3:43.07 to place third as well.

Franklin said the team will take a few days off to rest and enjoy life before prepared for the NCAA Indoor championships, which take place in Birmingham, Alabama on March 11-12.
