all into Autumn with your September issue of Concept. September 23 sees the Autumnal Equinox, when the day and night are of equal length, after this nights get steadily shorter. To make up for this, September is usually one of the loveliest months of the year. An Indian summer is not uncommon and the beauty of sunshine glistening on Autumn leaves never fails to make me smile. This month your magazine is bursting at the seams with features and articles, all designed to keep you reading all month long. Here at Concept we have ‘Bake Off ’ fever. We have a delicious recipe for courgette cake from Lilli’s Tearoom and Cakery in Market Deeping and a range of products from your local high street to get you started. We also spent ‘A moment with...’ Fiona Hood, owner of Renaissance Hair and Beauty and have solved your beauty problems. Our wine expert Leigh Johnson has handpicked a selection of Calfornian wines perfect for those warm September nights. This month we are also celebrating art, taking a look at the National Centre For Craft & Design in Sleaford and all that they have on offer, from workshops to beautifully handcrafted homeware. There’s so much to see and do in the area this month; our guide of upcoming events is full of great ideas to keep the whole family entertained. Sit back, relax and enjoy your September issue of Concept.

News - in - brief DYKE SCARECROW FESTIVAL 2015 Last year 44 scarecrows adorned the village of Dyke for its first Scarecrow Festival. This year the committee of Dyke Village Hall promise an even bigger, better event. On September 12 and 13, scarecrows will once again make Dyke their home for the weekend, for the Dyke Scarecrow Festival 2015. Event organiser and Vice Chair of Dyke Village Hall Committee, Samantha Coles said: “With last year’s event we were just testing the water, but we were overwhelmed by the number of scarecrows on display. Cars passing through the village slowed down to take a look,

everyone on the street was smiling, and some even travelled up to 45 minutes to see our creations - it was fantastic. “The excitement is already brewing for this year’s event, with lots of organisations keen to get involved - we can’t wait.” Scarecrows will be on display from 11am on Saturday, for the whole weekend. On Saturday there will also be lots more going on, including: • Exhibitions and stalls from 11am to 4pm; including an art exhibition, classic cars and motorbikes, motorised boats, and hopefully a tractor exhibition, birds of prey, dog training and much more. • BBQ and bouncy castle at The Wishing Well Inn, sponsors of the prizes.

Throughout the weekend’s festivities the village hall will be open for refreshments, maps, and public voting for the best scarecrow. Groups outside of the village (schools, clubs etc) are welcome to create scarecrows and space will be allocated in the village to display them. The public will be asked to vote for their favourite scarecrow and prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, with the prize giving being held at 12pm on the Sunday, in the village hall. Dyke Village Hall and village events are organised and run by volunteers, Dyke Village Hall welcomes donations to support the running of such events and the maintenance of the hall. Don’t miss out on this unique event, which promises lots of fun for all the family. For more information visit www.dykevillagehall.org.uk

What’s Happening Congratulations to Emma Dyson from Stamford Independent Travel Recent winner of Travel Weekly’s Mystery Shopper Competition, Stamford Independent Travel achieved a score of 94%, showing excellent advice and product knowledge and great customer service. The Mystery Shopper wanted to purchase a low-cost city break to New York for three people in September for three nights, flying out on a Friday and staying in a central location. The budget was £3,500. “I was welcomed by an enthusiastic agent as soon as I walked in,” explained the Mystery Shopper. “The agent was eager to please and asked lots of open-ended questions to allow me to fully explain what I wanted.” The Mystery shopper was pleased to acknowledge that Emma didn’t need to do any research because she had first-hand knowledge of the destination and was able to share her insight. Emma recommended a Premium Deluxe room at the Westin New York, located in Times Square for the price of £2,166, which included the hotel and flights with Delta Air Lines to JFK airport. She also offered insurance and advice about the Esta visa, before asking for the best time to make a follow-up call. “An excellent service,” said the Mystery Shopper. Emma has been at Stamford Independent Travel since it opened in 2009, she said: “I went to New York about nine years ago and loved it. That personal experience helped me make recommendations, and I’ve also gathered lots of knowledge about the city from customer feedback.”

DONATION TO BRING PARK ALIVE FOR HEARING IMPAIRED Visitors to Ferry Meadows with hearing impairments will have their experience of the Park’s facilities improved following two kind donations. The Rotary Club of Peterborough has made a donation of ÂŁ500 and The Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation making a donation of ÂŁ600 to Nene Park Trust towards hearing support equipment at Ferry Meadows. The money has enabled the Trust to go beyond providing hearing loops for inside its main visitor buildings. These additional donations mean the Trust can invest in a tour guide system which will allow park staff to be heard directly by hearing aid users or those hard of hearing when out on guided walks of the park, on educational trips or taking part in other Nene Park Trust organised activities. Susan Evans, Projects and Development Officer at Nene Park Trust, said: “We are

delighted that these two local organisations have chosen to support our work in making Ferry Meadows more accessible to the community. With the statistics on hearing loss currently standing at more than 10 million people in the UK with some form of hearing loss, or one in six of the population, we believe the hearing support equipment really will make a difference to our visitors’ experience of the ark. Nene Park Trust was nominated for the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation donation by colleagues at Norwich & Peterborough (N&P) Building Society, which is part of The Yorkshire Building Society. This investment towards improving accessibility at Ferry Meadows comes shortly after the Trust published large print and braille maps of the park for the visually impaired. This work all contributed to Nene Park Trust being awarded Highly Commended in the national Accessible Britain Challenge Awards for its on-going work in making Nene Park accessible to all. To find out more about the accessibility of Ferry Meadows please visit www.neneparktrust.org.uk/ferrymeadows/accessibility or contact Nene Park Trust directly on 01733 234193 or visitor.services@neneparktrust.org.uk Ann Deane – member of the Nene Park Access Forum; Susan Evans – Senior Projects and Development Officer at Nene Park Trust; John Wilkinson – Outgoing President of The Rotary Club of Peterborough

HACONBY VILLAGE OPEN GARDENS The event will take place on the weekend of the 12 and 13 September. Entrance to all the gardens will be ÂŁ4 and there will be bulbs and plants for sale. There will also be a photography competition, craft stalls and refreshments. On Friday 11 September between 7pm and 9pm, there will be a social event to mark the start of the weekend in the church which will be ÂŁ5 ticket (including light refreshments) to view the crafts and photography competition. For tickets please contact Edwina 01778 571008 or Jill 01778 570653.

All proceeds from the day will go to St. Andrew’s Church. The idea of an Arts Festival was devised as a community event in St. Andrew’s Church and as a fundraising idea by Church Warden Bill Reid in 2001. Then with the help of some wonderful gardeners and organisers, it developed into Open Gardens and Art Festival including Crafts. This year there will be a different format with a Photography Competition for the Ringstone and Aveland group of villages instead of the Art displays. Craft stalls will still be held in the church with some wonderful stalls to suit everyone. St. Andrew’s Church, parts of which date from the 12th century is ideal for such events, as it is a light and open space having no pews. This year the Open Gardens Festival is later in the year giving visitors chance to see the late summer and early autumn colour in the gardens, hopefully to give them some ideas to prolong the summer colour. There will be an opportunity to think of next year by buying some bulbs for spring, there will also be some plants for sale.

Raise a mug

to the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning Friday 25th September

I

t’s time to dust off those coffee mugs and dig out your ‘showstopper’ recipe, as Macmillan Cancer Support’s flagship fundraiser World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, returns on Friday 25th September. This year Macmillan is hoping that more people than ever will take part and help to celebrate its 25th Anniversary by raising over £25 million for people affected by cancer. The idea remains as simple today as it was in 1991 when the first official World’s Biggest Coffee Morning took place: get together with friends, colleagues or neighbours to hold a coffee morning and raise money for Macmillan. After all, cake really does taste better together. A local fundraising committee came up with the idea after it held a coffee morning and donated the proceeds to Macmillan.

They suggested rolling out the idea nationally and the first official event saw 2,600 people across the UK host a coffee morning. Last year Macmillan estimates that over five million people were involved and a staggering total of £138 million has been raised since 1991. With 2.5 million people currently living with cancer, this year Macmillan needs more people than ever to get involved. Every cup of coffee bought, cake baked and laugh shared at a coffee morning helps Macmillan to continue providing vital services and support to ensure no one faces cancer alone.

Cheese frosting: Frosting is made with equal parts icing sugar to butter. Mix the cream cheese with added lime juice with icing sugar and butter. Pipe or using a pallet knife decorate the cool cake use grated lemon or lime on top. Courgette cake will be available on Friday 25th September with donations taken for Macmillan.

California Dreamin’

C

alifornia is the most important wine growing state in America. It produces around 90% of the country’s wine; around 250 million cases per year – that’s three billion bottles! The region attracts 200 million tourists to its wineries every year and if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest wine producing country in the world, only behind France, Italy and Spain. Yet, despite its importance to the wine world, California is far less well represented in the UK than practically any other major wine producing nation, and is even less so than some of the relative vinous minnows like Chile, Argentina and Bulgaria! Much of this is down to price. The average price paid by UK wine drinkers is less than £5 per bottle and Californian wines cost far more than this, so most supermarkets are reluctant to stock something that might languish on the shelf. The more serious wine-supporting supermarkets such as Waitrose and M&S do stock a smallish range, but for a wider choice, drinkers need to look to specialist wine merchants, such as Majestic or the Wine Society. The Californian wine industry had a remarkably humble beginning and almost never got off the ground. It is amazing to think until very recently, right up until 1933, wine was banned by Prohibtion. Even when it was again permitted, the Second World War all but stopped production and it was not until the 1960s that wine began to be made in serious quantities. The international breakthrough came in 1976 at the “Judgement of Paris” winetasting in which the best of California’s wines beat the

best of Bordeaux in a blind tasting. The same outcome was achieved 30 years later and it became an undeniable fact that California’s top wines were of world-class quality. What about today? California is a huge state, running several hundreds of miles north to south. It has a maritime climate along its Western coastal border and a combination of mountains and desert along its Eastern border. The altitude runs from sea level to over 14,000 feet in the White Mountains, almost three and a half times higher than Ben Nevis. Unsurprisingly, the soil differs hugely across the region and it is this combination of different altitudes and different soils which gives California so many wine options. The best Californian wine producing areas in my view are just north of San Francisco in the Napa Valley and Carneros and just south of San Francisco, in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Notwithstanding this broad generalisation, there are so many other areas that stand equally good comparison so do look at the whole region for exciting wines to try. The most successful grape varieties are Chardonnay (white) and Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir (reds). Historically, the generally warmer climate tended to produce richer, more alcoholic and powerful wines than their cool climate European counterparts, often to the point of being somewhat overblown and even flabby. This has all changed in recent years. With better viticultural practices, earlier picking to preserve freshness and with better grape variety and soil type matching the wines offer an elegance and refinement to match anything Europe can produce.

I have selected a few easy to locate wines that

Try the Brazin, Old Vine Zinfandel, from Lodi just inland from San Francisco. The warm climate produces big, bold flavours with notes of mulberry, plum and Asian spices. It has soft tannins and a touch of oak and would be ideal with BBQ meats or meaty pizzas. It is available from Waitrose for around £13.

P

Another excellent wine is the Paso Creek, Cabernet Sauvignon from the Paso Robles region in southern California. It has pronounced aromas of cassis, black cherry and vanilla. Decant this wine, or serve in large glasses to really let its perfume develop and shine. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and concentrated black bramble fruit flavours. Long finish. Available from Majestic at around £13.50. Lastly, if you fancy a white wine, do try the Saintsbury Chardonnay from the Carneros region just north of San Francisco. Notes of pears, apricots and melon with toasted spicy oak characters are complemented on the palate by stone fruit, vanilla and hazelnuts. Full-bodied and creamy, with a balanced and powerful finish. Available from Majestic for around £17.50. These wines are definitely worth seeking out. They offer a true sense of place and something strikingly different from most other wine regions. The wines are not cheap but they do represent very good value for money.

this month... To celebrate our wedding anniversary recently we opened a bottle of Krug, 1995 vintage champagne. Krug is one of the very finest of all the Grand Marques of champagne and unusual in that their wines are partly raised in oak. This gives the wines a richness and complexity like no other champagne. At 20 years old this champagne was still remarkably youthful with great freshness and lift. It had developed wonderfully over the years and displayed notes of white flowers, toasted brioche, gingerbread, candied fruits and ripe melon: a peacocks tail of aromas and flavours, absolutely perfect for a great celebration.

Helenium, Sneezewort, beautiful late summer perennials flowering now

SEPTEMBER

in the GARDEN S

eptember is one of those funny months; it still feels like summer but there are tell-tale signs that Autumn is just around the corner. There’s still plenty to do in the garden and plenty left to harvest. Towards the end of the month conditions should be excellent for planting, which means it’s also a good time to divide perennial plants. So if you’ve got perennials taking over your herbaceous borders, now’s the perfect time to take control!

Why divide plants? Perennial plants, those which die back each winter and start into growth again in the spring, will get congested after a few years. You’ll find that the centre of the plant starts to become less productive and the new growth is around the edges. Some plants may just have outgrown their allotted space and need reducing in size.

When to divide: Now is an ideal time to be dividing summer flowering perennials and herbs as the ground is still warm and moist. If you garden on heavy

Concept_September 15_26-51.indd 27

clay it is best to wait until spring. Perennials that are in flower now or anything with fleshy roots, or that might be a tad tender, can be lifted and divided in spring, just as they come into growth. Divide spring flowering plants immediately after flowering.

Plant of the month: Hydrangea Hydrangeas have been flowering their heads off this year and will continue to look good into the winter if left to dry on the plant. If you wish to dry them to use in floral arrangements, cut them when they still have good colour and stand in a vase of water to dry slowly. They thrive in moist, well drained, cool shade and some will change colour to blue on acidic soil and pink on alkaline soil.

How to divide: This will depend on the type of plant, but generally if you dig up the entire clump you will find that it will naturally split if the roots are separated by hand. You’re looking for small clumps with 3-5 growing shoots and some roots on each piece. Some plants may put up some resistance so utilise the

Jobs to do in SEPTEMBER In the Flower Garden:

• Perfect Planting time: Fill gaps in the borders with late flowering perennials to add a boost of colour. • Buy and Plant bulbs as soon as they are available in the shops, ready for next spring. Plant Daffs now but wait till next month to plant Tulips. Plant Sweet peas now under glass, no heat required. • Prune rambling and climbing roses, tying in any new growth that can be used to replace some of the old unproductive wood. Reduce the height of tall shrub roses to prevent wind rock.

T S N T

y

In the Vegetable Garden:

• Plant: There is still time to plant spring cabbage, garlic in pots to plant out later, broad beans, spinach, land cress, corn salad, winter lettuce and beetroot for leaves. Plant herbs in pots for winter use. • Harvesting: Harvest fruit as it ripens i.e. apples, pears and plums. Allow some veg to go to seed and collect this for a free supply of your favourites for next year. • Pruning: There is still time to summer prune trained apples and pears. Correct summer pruning helps the to ripen fruit and produces more fruiting spurs for future crops.

In the Greenhouse:

• Reduce watering a feeding towards the end of the month. • Remove shading and start to reduce ventilation as the temperature drops.

Pots and Containers:

My Juicy Apples

method of using two garden forks back to back and prising the roots apart. Other plants can be subjected to what seems brutal treatment by slicing up the root ball with a spade, saw or sharp knife! If you’re not sure, there are plenty of courses available online, or give me a call. Plants are surprisingly resilient and it’s very doubtful that you will completely destroy it. Discard any dead or unproductive material from the centre of the plant.

Aftercare: Once relocated, keep them well watered until they’re established. This may depend on the size of the plants but water in dry spells during their first year. Feed in spring once they’ve started back into growth. Till next month...

Happy gardening!

Planting: Enrich the soil with plenty of organic matter and a slow release fertiliser, before planting your new divisions. Use purchased or homemade compost or for a real treat, some homemade leaf mould. Once planted, water in well. If you have spares start another clump somewhere else, pot up to grow under cover or give some to friends.

• Remove faded summer bedding and pot up and take cuttings from tender perennials like Pelargoniums (Geraniums) for new plants next year. Compost what you can. • Replace with plants for winter interest, e.g. good old winter pansies, Cyclamen, Skimmia, Heuchera, Ivies particularly variegated ones and evergreen grasses. Small evergreen shrubs look good in pots as do heathers. Under plant with bulbs like Snowdrops, small Narcissus, Crocus and even Tulips.

Lawn Care:

• Now is the time to give neglected lawns a spot of rejuvenation. Mowing, raking and mowing again in the opposite direction should be followed by spiking, feeding and top dressing.

Looking after the Wildlife:

• Keep birdbaths clean and topped up. • After cutting down perennials, dry the Bug house hollow stems and tie in bunches to create bug houses.

BEAUTY problems

solved.

WE HAVE THE ANSWERS TO YOUR BIGGEST BEAUTY PROBLEMS HELP... I’M A SELF-TANNING VIRGIN, WHERE DO I START? Nothing makes you feel better than when you’re rocking a sun-kissed glow. Before hitting (the fake tan) bottle, follow these handy tips for a gorgeous, natural-looking tan. Preparing your skin is key to an even tan and you must always do a test patch on your skin 24- 48 hours in advance to ensure there are no nasty reactions to the product. Shave or wax at least 24 hours before applying self-tanning lotion, otherwise follicles may still be open and self-tanner can pool them, which will leave you with tiny dark spots all over your skin. Self-tanner takes best to freshly-cleaned, exfoliated skin. Exfoliating your skin before self-tanning removes any dead skin (which absorbs more self-tanner) meaning you shouldn’t be left with unsightly spots and streaks. Now that your skin is prepped and ready, follow these steps for an even, natural-looking tan.

1. Begin at your thighs. Starting with a dollop at the top, rub the self-tanner down the length of your legs, by the time you reach your ankles, (an area that doesn’t require a lot of tanner), the lotion will have thinned out.

HELP... I HAVE FRIZZY HAIR! Does your hair fluff up like a lion’s mane the moment you are exposed to heat? Frizz is caused by a lack of moisture in your hair, drying it out. These tips will help you eliminate frizz and keep that barnet under control. 1. Applying an anti-frizz serum to your hair before blow-drying will create a protective layer.

2. Pick protein-enriched shampoos and conditioners designed for ‘dry/ damaged’ hair. These repair the hair and protect it from humidity. 3. Don’t overwash your hair. Too much washing strips your hair of its natural oils, drying it out.

4. Choose your hairstyle wisely. If your hair is cut evenly all around it will create too much volume. Choose styles with long-layers. 5. Never towel-dry your hair - this causes more frizz. Squeeze out excess water and either let your hair dry naturally or blow-dry with a diffuser.

TOP TIPS

• Too much shampoo can strip your hair of its natural oils, once a week try washing your hair using just conditioner. The conditioner contains a little of what shampoo uses to clean your hair but is not as intense. • Do not expose your hair to more heat than necessary. Wait until your hair is 90% dry and then blow-dry with a diffuser. • Brush your hair regularly to help evenly distribute its natural oils, this will help keep your hair hydrated.

2. Rub the self-tanner into your torso, followed by your arms. Start at your shoulders and as with your legs, start with a dollop at the top and rub down your arms. 3. When tanning your face (check that the tanner you have bought is suitable for the face), make sure you rub the tanner up and down into your hairline to prevent the tell-tale line. Rub excess lotion into your hands and then rub onto your ears and back of your neck (don’t forget these bits, they will stand out).

4. Go easy on your hands as dark hands and orange nail beds are a dead giveaway to a dodgy self-tan job. To apply to hands it’s best to use a tanning mist, curl your hand into a claw position and spray. If using lotion avoid your palms.

TOP TIPS

• Start with a light tanner to avoid any orange disasters. Once you have mastered the art of application you can be a bit more daring with the colour of your tan. • Do not shower, bathe or swim six to eight hours after application as water will prevent the tan from developing. • Three days after application gently exfoliate your skin to remove any dead skin and refresh your tan. • Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap after applying fake tan to avoid orange, blotchy hands.

Botched beauty ONLINE by Fiona Hood

Renaissance Health & Beauty

S

ince writing an article a few months ago on the dangers of buying skincare online, I have fallen foul of a scam recently on Facebook that I would like to share in the hope that others will not fall into the same trap.

Being a skincare specialist, I am always interested in new products and treatments that come onto the market. I saw an advert last month on Facebook for some new products with very impressive before and after photographs. The advert invites you to try the products and just pay postage and packing of ÂŁ3.99. This looks interesting, I thought, What have I got to lose? Quite a lot, it turns out! It was very easy to sign up and a little while later some products arrived in the post. I was surprised to find that they were full sized products as I was expecting samples, and there was no paperwork enclosed. I took them home and gave them a try. They were awful. Horrible textures and after using for a week my skin looked terrible. The products did not do, in any way, what the promise was from the promotional photographs. I did not

think any more about it as I put them out with the rubbish. However, 10 days later I got notification that money had been taken out of my account. I immediately spoke to my bank as I thought it was a fraudulent transaction. Apologetically they told me there was nothing they could do as they had seen this before. It was not in fact fraudulent as I had inadvertently signed up for a subscription. I could not believe what I was hearing and went home to do some research. Although there had been no information on the advert when you sign up, I discovered by going onto the website that you have 10 days

R

to return the products or you are allowing the company to charge the full price which I was aghast to find was ÂŁ200. The products also come from two separate orders so they can charge you twice. You are then subscribed to one package a month. The company was in Canada and nowhere could I even find a return address. I did however find a link to unsubscribe and also emailed to cancel any future subscription and payments. To be safe I cancelled the card that I had used. I am annoyed with myself for being seduced by the marketing of this company and it is upsetting that companies like this give true advertisers a bad reputation, but to underline what was said in my previous article, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Beware... or it could cost you.

HYDROTHERAPY for your dog

H

ydrotherapy is not only great for dogs who suffer with joint pain, arthritis or who are in need of physiotherapy after an operation, it’s also great for those pooches who just love to swim. We meet Registered Canine Hydrotherapist Helen Edis, who tells us all about Hydropets and how hydrotherapy can benefit our pets.

Helen, who is registered with the National Association of Registered Canine Hydrotherapists (NARCH), launched Hydropets Therapy & Fitness Centre in 2013, for the rehabilitation of companion animals. Helen’s inspiration came from her dog Ole, who as a result of spondylosis and osteoarthritis will require hydrotherapy sessions for the rest of his life. The stunning, purpose-built facility, located on Stamford Road in Market Deeping comprises of a 5x3m hydrotherapy pool, physiotherapy room and a state-of-the-art water treadmill. Hydrotherapy, meaning ‘water therapy’, uses the properties of water; such as temperature, buoyancy and pressure to erase discomfort and promote the healing of sore, inflamed or injured muscles, joints and limbs. “The pride of our centre is the purpose-built hydrotherapy pool,” said Helen. “It’s fully in-ground, which means it’s safe and easy to manage for all animals, especially those with reduced mobility; there are no long, hard to manage ramps that could undo all the good done following veterinary or hydrotherapy treatment. “The water in the pool is heated to 30°C, which is better for your pet as it improves blood circulation to all of the muscles. The platform within the pool was designed by a member of the Canine Hydrotherapy Association (CHA), it offers support and can aid in the treatment given by hydrotherapists and physiotherapists. “We’ve the best floatation aids and harnesses available so that your pet is safe and secure in the water, as well as a range of safe toys that can be used as encouragement if necessary.”

At Hydropets all dogs are treated as individuals. It’s important that they feel relaxed and happy in their surroundings, they’re able to explore the centre and are introduced to the pool gradually. “On arrival at the centre your dog will be assessed and given a physical examination,” explained Helen. “We will discuss their lifestyle and how things can be adapted to suit their condition. We will also demonstrate exercises that can be done at home to aid their recovery. “Surprisingly, not all dogs are natural swimmers. Prior to entering the pool, the dog is showered and dressed in either a float coat or a harness to aid buoyancy, control and safety.” The physiotherapy room at Hydropets accommodates a state-of-the-art water treadmill. Water treadmills are perfect for patients who need additional support and guidance correcting their gate and foot placement. “Water treadmills are a tool used by top athletes to get their muscles, strength and fitness to the best they can be,” continued Helen. “This tool is relatively new to the canine rehabilitation industry, but uses the same technology used in human water treadmills. Our treadmill at Hydropets meets all UK and EU legislation and uses state-ofthe-art technology to give our clients the best rehabilitation available. “Our chartered Physiotherapist Samantha Rodwell has her own room at Hydropets. After training and qualifying to become a physiotherapist in the NHS, Samantha went on to gain a veterinary physiotherapy qualification from the Royal Veterinary College and became a Category A member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy (ACPAT).

“Samantha identifies and maximises the body’s potential through treatments, rehabilitation, education and preventative approaches. Her core skills include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and the use of electro-physical modalities; such as laser and ultrasound. “At Hydropets we believe that all animals deserve the right to live long, happy and pain-free lives. We aspire to the best in all aspects of our field; including service, treatments and facilities - as well as exceptional value for money.”

The Yorkshire Shepherdess

by Amanda Owen

If you have watched The Dales on ITV with Ade Edmondson then you will have seen Amanda and her husband Clive and their remote farm, Ravenseat, in the Yorkshire Dales. On the screen she seemed to be either expecting a baby or carrying one on her back. This book is her light-hearted account of her life so far; in her words, ‘How I left city life behind to raise a family and a flock’. In this entertaining memoir she tells, with warmth and humour, of her early desire to become a shepherdess, own a working sheepdog and then later, have a family and bring them up in a unique and beautiful environment, far removed from her own childhood in Huddersfield. This is not easy because Ravenseat is in the middle of nowhere, many miles from easy shopping, doctors and schools. There are lots of funny anecdotes but most of all it’s an honest glimpse into a very tough way of life, lived with grit, determination and a smile on her face because she feels so lucky to be there. You learn about farming life, its hardships and traditions, the simple joys and challenges that the changing seasons bring, the local characters and of course, their many children. There is a sign at the entrance to Ravenseat that reads ‘Beware – free range children’. If you have walked in the Dales and love them like I do then you will be able to relate to the stories of their working life, the difficulties of raising animals and a family in a remote location and often battling extremely harsh conditions, sometimes with no running water or electricity for days. You will also get a better appreciation of what life is like in the Dales and just how beautiful and fulfilling a place it is to live and work in. Please read this book, I bet you’ll have a smile on your face afterwards, just like Amanda.

Four Seasons Garden Centre “the place to grow”” At Four Seasons Garden Centre we have a wealth of plant knowledge on tap. Pete our expert gardener is on hand to help answer any q uestions you might have & to give advice on how to get the best results from your plants & garden. “ At this time of year I would be looking to pot up my hyacinth bulbs ready for Christmas. I use bulb fibre which you can buy from our sundries department. I think it represents good value for money as the results are always great. If you’re anything like me I bet you’re itching to tuck into your potatoes which you have lovingly tended these past few months. Well I like mine cooked simply with a bit of butter & fresh herbs.

We have hessian potato sacks which are perfect for storing your potatoes in. Just make sure you leave them in a cool dark place. Growing your own vegetables in my opinion is one of the most rewarding things you can do in your garden. However losing your priz ed veg to pests & vermin is a constant battle. So if you have planted out any over wintering brassicas make sure you net them. In our shop you can buy garden netting & insect mesh by the metre so that you can get j ust the amount you need. After all your hard work mowing your lawn once or twice weekly don’t ruin it all now, give it the best possible start for next summer with a really good autumn lawn dressing, we even have the lawn spreaders in store. For me this is a great time of year to really get a big compost heap going in readiness for next year. You can buy compost accelerators from the sundries department” .

What happens when you die?

I

f like me you have a home in the sun, mine’s in Spain, you might well have made a Will that deals with what happens to that property if you die. If you have then as of recently you need to review it and probably update it. The reason is that the Brussels IV regulations on cross border inheritance came into force on 17th August 2015.

/81&+ 2))(5

2))

<285 )22' %,//

Previously a property in an EU state was subject to the Inheritance Tax and Heirship rules of the country that it was situated in, a French property subject to French inheritance law, an Italian property subject to Italian law etc. This potentially restricted the people you could pass your assets to and could lead you to pay inheritance tax at different points and rates to that you would pay in the UK. As of 17th August 2015, this has changed and you can now elect to have your estate treated as if it was situated in the country of your nationality, this will make a difference to how your estate is administered after your death, it will affect your tax planning and could make a difference to who will inherit your property. In short if you have a European property, be it a holiday home or somewhere you have retired to permanently you need to review your will. Call us 01778 382723 to discuss what you need to do

The Team

DEDICATED

TO TRAVEL

S

eeing a gap in the market, Co-owners of Stamford Independent Travel, Emma and Dawn believed there was a place for an independent travel agency in Stamford. Once their idea took shape there was no going back and they opened in August 2009. They are now Stamford’s local independent travel experts aiming to provide a high level of personal service to find the right holiday to suit each individual’s needs. The experienced and friendly staff will ensure that every customer receives accurate and independent advice on all their holiday needs. The team is truly passionate about what they do and strives to go that extra mile for each and every customer. As ABTA members, customers can be assured that their holiday booking is always in safe hands. Stamford Independent Travel offer a wide range of holiday packages, each tailored to suit all kinds of individual and family needs. The sheer amount of choice can seem overwhelming at first, but with their free personal advisory service to relieve you of the stress you will be amazed at how easy it is to arrive at the perfect package to suit your

needs. There is no obligation, just call into their office for an informal chat. Emma Bate, Co-owner said: “As independent travel experts we aim to provide the highest possible level of personal service, from booking your holiday to arriving back at your door. As our customers, your holiday is as important to us as it is to you; after all, if you have a marvellous holiday you will want to come back to us time and time again - if you’re happy so are we. We provide a wide range of holidays to suit your individual needs. These include coach trips, family packages, skiing holidays, worldwide itineraries, bespoke luxury travel and much more.” Being an independent travel agency is a huge bonus, as the company is not tied down to any one operator. This means they will find the right holiday for you regardless of the tour operator, airline, hotel company or cruise

line. Also, being part of The Freedom Travel Group means that they have bigger buying power enabling them to provide customers with a wider range of holidays at the most competitive prices. The team consists of five staff members; Co-owners Emma Bate and Dawn Scott, also Emma Dyson (Assistant Manager), Nicola Clare and Sharon Carr. All team members are fully-trained personal travel consultants with over 60 years of combined travel experience between them. Package holidays often provide excellent value, but they don’t always fulfil the needs of those who prefer to set their own itinerary and pursue their own interests. This is where Stamford Independent Travel’s experience and expertise can provide you with a holiday deal that you won’t find anywhere else. Simply tell them where you want to go, what you

Go Go Go Intensive Ltd 0KIANO>U %KQOA NK=@S=U -APAN>KNKQCD -" 06

WR SDVV \RXU GULYLQJ WHVW

Go Go Go Intensive is based in Peterborough and offers learner drivers a fast and cost-effective way to pass both the driving theory test and practical driving test for a standard fee of ÂŁ795. According to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) the average driver needs 45 professional lessons and a further 20 lessons from family members, friends or a professional instructor. The average cost for professional tuition is ÂŁ20 - ÂŁ22 per hour which means that the average learner driver is paying up to ÂŁ1200 to pass their practical driving test. While there is nothing wrong with weekly lessons it could take up to 60 weeks for a student to pass their driving test. Go Go Go Intensive offers a structured course syllabus at its training centre and removes the kerbside instruction into a classroom environment. The benefit to this is that all the time spent in the car is spent on driving with little or no kerbside instruction. The syllabus was developed by a Defensive Driving Examiner and is based on the Military and Police system, which is recognised as the most efficient and cost effective way of obtaining a driving licence. This is because there are no gaps in learning, where a student can forget what they did during a lesson a week before. The courses run Monday to Friday and start at 9.00am. The first hour is spent in the classroom with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) who starts training and preparing students for their theory test. Students are collected by their driving Instructor at 10.00am where they have a two hour intensive driving lesson, a rest break for half an hour, followed by a further two hour intensive driving lesson. Students return to the classroom at 2.30pm for further training and the course finishes at 5.00pm each day. At the start of the week the classroom training focuses on getting students to pass their theory and hazard perception tests, which are pre-booked to be taken on the Thursday or Friday of the week. By the middle of the week the classroom training focuses on all the elements that are normally taught at the kerbside during weekly lessons. By the end of the week students should have passed their theory test and will have covered all aspects of normal driving. If the Instructor has signed off the student as test ready then they can book a short notice test where Go Go Go Intensive can dramatically reduce the practical test waiting time. The company is so confident with its teaching methods that should a student fail the theory test, or practical driving test if they have been signed off as test ready, then any corrective lessons required will be provided free of charge until a test pass is achieved. The company also has unique links with the Institute of Advanced Motorists and gives free affiliate membership, for 12 months, to all students who pass their driving test. The Institute teaches the Police system called “Roadcraftâ€? and when applied you cannot have a collision that is your fault. Given the Governments statistic that one in five new drivers crash within 6 months of passing their driving test the system is an invaluable tool and dramatically reduces insurance premiums.

A moment with...

Fiona Hood

T

his month we meet Fiona Hood, owner of Renaissance Health and Beauty Therapy, Stamford’s premium salon specialising in Hi Tech beauty. 1. Tell us about your business “In August this year I celebrated 21 years in business. During that time I have seen many changes in the industry which have allowed my business to change and grow. I started of with a salon in St Pauls Street employing other therapists. We concentrated on classic facials and holistic treatments. However my passion has always been the Hi Tech side of beauty therapy and when personal circumstances forced me to move premises I started to concentrate more on that side of the business. I now work by myself but rent a room out to a practitioner who offers semi permanent makeup. Most of my day is spent doing electrolysis, IPL hair removal and Hi Tech facial treatments such as CACI, needle free mesotherapy, Microdermabrasion and my own signature treatment - Collagen Lift. I also stock an excellent range of cosmeceuticals called Medik8 and offer their skin needling and chemical peels. Renaissance is about personal service and results driven products and treatments. I have a very loyal clientele some of whom have been coming to me since I opened back in 1994.”

2. What do you like most about Stamford? “I love the architecture and the history. It is a beautiful place to live and when I have been away anywhere I am struck all over again how pretty it is.”

3. What changes would you like to see for Stamford in the coming years? “I would like to see better and cheaper parking facilities, maybe a multi storey car park. It is the one issue that I hear so many

Concept_September 15_52-68.indd 58

people complain about in the salon. I would also like to see more flower displays especially in the areas of Red Lion Square, Sheepmarket and the Town Bridge.”

going East and have enjoyed trips to Dubai, Maldives, Thailand and Bali. We also like to explore the UK and have regular weekends away to sample new areas.”

4. Tell us something we might not know about you

5. What do you do in your spare time?

“I love to travel. After my business it is my passion in life. At the moment we are exploring

“I am an avid reader. I also love spending time with my family, walking my dog and working out.”
