News - in - brief STAMFORD’S GEORGIAN FESTIVAL Stamford’s Georgian Festival kicked off on Friday 25 September as the prelude to a brilliant weekend of entertainment, colour and spectacle. Talks by TV historian Lucy Worsley were sell-outs, and when the final numbers are in, ticket sales are set to exceed those of the first festival in 2013, confirms organiser, South Kesteven District Council. The opening nights Georgian Costume Ball was also a sell-out with a dance mistress calling the tune as the Arts Centre ballroom turned back the clock and played host to this fantastic celebration, rounding off the first days events. Saturday held a full day of markets which brought the streets to life from 10am to 4.30pm, with some eighty traders to choose from over the weekend. The Meadows were also a hive of activity, with members of the Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards 1815 camping alongside a selection of Georgian traders. The Camera Obscura, forerunner to the modern camera was weaving its magic alongside a punch and Judy show, traditional childrens’ fair rides and donkey rides. The streets were lined with people as the Bull Run carnival parade took centre stage, making its way through the streets along with costumed community groups and schoolchildren carrying flags and banners, mirroring how the bull was chased in a bygone age. The bull finally met its fate on the Meadows in a spectacular finale with an evening of music and entertainment. Over the weekend festival-goers enjoyed a wide and varied programme, from talks to music, drama, poetry and prose, ghost walks, tours of the Town Hall with its priceless regalia, walking tours, a brand new show from stage phenomenon Horrible Histories, military re-enactments and carriage rides. James Berresford, Chief Executive of Visit England was at the festivals civic launch in the Arts Centre. He attended the Georgian Festival in 2013, praising the virtues of

Stamford and its ability to attract visitors and on a recent visit to the town he said: “Stamford is a great draw from a tourism perspective and an absolute gem. It’s our job at Visit England to develop and promote tourism through a location’s strengths and assets and the heritage of a place like Stamford is both a strength and an asset. “I am delighted that another festival has been organised. From a tourism perspective it will be a massive boost. Many towns, cities and destinations would be jealous of what’s here in Stamford.” Overall the festival was a great success and offered a wonderful, unique experience for all thoses who came out to attend. That’s my BUSINESS H
ave you ever dreamed of being your own boss and running your own business? We speak with two new business owners who took the plunge and made their dream a reality. Going it alone and setting up your own business can be a daunting prospect, but with good planning, hard work and determination you can make it a success, as Rolando and Harri from Session365 and Darren and Hannah from Auto Rehab prove!
Name: Rolando and Harri Wright Business: Session365 What they do: Extreme sports shop, specialising in BMXs, skateboards, scooters, clothing and accessories Where: 3 Wherry’s Lane, Bourne Contact: 01778 392735 Where it all began “Around the end of May my dad Rolando and I decided that we wanted to try something different in the town. Over the past five years (at least), I had thought about opening a skate shop with an ‘edge’, as I’ve always felt that Bourne didn’t have many interesting shops for young people. “I presented the idea to my dad whilst having a beer at the pub one evening and he immediately fell in love with it, after previously being involved for many years in televised BMX and cycling events. It kickstarted the nostalgia and we discussed how it would be great for Bourne, and more importantly young people to have something new and exciting like this.” Making the idea a reality “After much consideration we decided that our previous premises on Angel Arcade, where my dad used to upcycle and restore shabby chic furniture, was not big enough to accommodate our plans. We went to look at the newly built shops at the top of Wherry’s Lane to get an idea of how much space we might need, then by fluke we walked further down the cut-through and saw a ‘To Let’ sign on the Bourne Furnishings shop. We spoke to the proprietors Nick and Margaret and asked if we could have a quick look inside - it was absolutely perfect. “As soon as we had secured the premises there was the mammoth task of making it look like the shop we had envisaged - on a
“Dad and I decided that we wanted to try something different in the town” shoestring budget. For two months; virtually every day and evening we were in the shop building, painting, making, cleaning and ordering to keep costs to a minimum, with the aim of getting the shop open by August 1.” The story so far “We’ve been open for nearly two months now and the response has been incredible. The support from the local community, as well as the skating, biking and scooting communities in Bourne has been truly overwhelming. “The overall feedback seems to be that people are extremely excited, and believe that there has been a need for a shop like this in Bourne for years; it’s something new that caters for the younger generations.” What’s next? “Our next steps are to continue expanding our ranges and product selection. We want to support and exhibit smaller, independent local skate companies and the exclusive niche companies - rather than ‘chucking’ money at the big corporates. “We’re also part of the local skatepark committee; we’re determined to do everything
we can to get a skatepark in Bourne. It would be great to give young people somewhere to go and enjoy their preferred extreme sport without being disturbed, asked to move or kicked off. These people are the next generation and the council should give them somewhere to go, be active and constructive with their time, 12 years is far too long to wait and I believe I speak for everyone when I say that.” Top tips “Do something different, put your own edge on it and always try to inject and highlight your USP (unique selling proposition). Pick a solid, memorable name, nothing long-winded and use this to create an ethos around what your business is supposed to be. “Use social media as much as you can, it’s virtually free and it allows customers to directly engage with your business. “Make sure that your customer service is second-to-none, be helpful but not pushy and do everything with a smile. “You can’t ever please everyone so be prepared to take some criticism, as you expand their opinions will change and if they don’t? Don’t worry about it!” OCTOBER 15 CONCEPT MAGAZINE / 15

Name: Darren and Hannah Scott Business: Auto Rehab What they do: Vehicle restoration Where: 6 Victor Way, Bourne Contact: 07967 352654
“Auto Rehab has a strong ethos of trying to use local businesses and we have met some great people in them who have been encouraging, and in some cases are now customers - making the first year a good one.”
Where it all began “Darren apprenticed as a panel beater and painter and has worked in the motor industry since with modern and classic vehicles. “Eighteen years ago Darren bought a 1965 Beetle with a friend and we decided to do a full restoration; we took it back to bare metal and stripped everything off it. It took us five years to finish it, but by the time we had completed it we knew classic Volkswagens and restoring them was our passion. Darren had also developed an obsession with Split Screen Campervans, dragging the whole family to a large number of Volkswagen shows over the years, ensuring the whole family grew to have a passion for them. “In 2007 we swapped the Beetle for a Split Screen pick-up truck (Splitty), the best we could manage at the time. However whilst the Beetle was perfect, the Split Screen needed a lot of work, it was the Split Screen that sowed the final seed of Darren starting up Auto Rehab and restoring old vehicles on his own. “Whilst restoring the Beetle and the Split Screen for himself, Darren also undertook many restorations for customers in his previous job. This ranged from Singers and Rovers to Volkswagens and Porsches. Darren found the old cars far more interesting than working on the newer cars and after many years of debating whether to start up on his own, focusing on the vehicles he enjoyed, the idea developed into reality.”
What’s next? “We spent the Summer ensuring Auto Rehab gets known locally by touring the local car shows. We’ve met some wonderful people, many of which have come to us for work or are planning to. “The thing with vehicle restoration is people want to leave what is their pride and joy with someone who cares. Meeting people locally at business and car shows is the main way Darren can show people that we do care. Auto Rehab will continue to ensure our presence locally at car shows and other events where classic vehicles are prominent. “In addition, we hope to add to the Auto Rehab fleet with a UK 1966 Beetle, and to
be able to grow the business enough to give someone else the opportunity to learn how to restore vehicles with the same skill and passion that Darren has.” Top tips “Ensure that whatever business you are setting up, you’re really passionate about it and set a high standard for whatever you do. “Have a business plan and forecast (which should be regularly updated) to keep you focused and be able to realise what you’re achieving, even in quieter months. “Have the right support; from friends and family to professional support such as an accountant. “Be patient when looking for premises. Ensure you wait for the right premises in the right location for what you require. “Be prepared to commit your time and energy in unending amounts for the first year or so.”
“We knew classic Volkswagens and restoring them was our passion”
Making the idea a reality “Darren realised he would need the support of his family so firstly we all sat down and discussed what it mean to each of us; the pros and cons, the short-term consequences and the longer term ones. The whole family were excited to start a new venture together. “Finding suitable premises was a struggle. We got a lucky break after four months of looking; finding a landlord who would listen to what we wished to achieve - to build a business where quality and professionalism were important. “A big part of setting up the business was whether to sell the Split Screen pick-up for start-up costs. However, it occurred to Darren that it perfectly advertised his skills and so it toured the local car shows all through the summer.” The story so far “The unit we rented needed a lot of work to make it the space needed for Auto Rehab. The first month of business was spent creating the space required. “Darren got a second lucky break when an old friend employed him to complete a restoration for a Karmann Ghia floor pan and another customer booked in their Bay Window Campervan for a full restoration and respray. This filled the first three months and ensured Auto Rehab had a flying start. OCTOBER 15 CONCEPT MAGAZINE / 17

OCTOBER
in the GARDEN Plant of the month Clerodendron trichotomum (Glory Tree or Harlequin glorybower) - this large shrub or small tree is deciduous and can grow to a height and spread of 6m. It’s well worth growing if you have the space as it has extremely fragrant, white, jasmine like flowers which are attractive to insects. Its full glory comes later in the year with its stunning fuchsia pink calyxes and bright turquoise berries. It likes well drained, fertile soil in a sunny sheltered spot.
T
his month the colour baton is picked up in the garden by the fruit, berries and rich Autumn leaves. As those beautiful leaves begin to fall they add yet another job to the list, in what is already a very busy month in the garden. There’s the tidying of the borders, clearing the veg plot, emptying the greenhouse, replenishing containers, raking thatch from the lawn and cleaning out the pond. This month we will probably produce more rubbish in the garden than at any other time of year. What better time to start a compost system or sort out an existing one and make use of this delicious free commodity. I put some on the garden every year whilst the ground is still warm and moist. I then get a flush of forget-me-nots and calendula but they weed out easily enough!
Sweet Crumbly Compost or Snotty Green Sludge? Anyone who knows me well won’t be surprised to discover that I have a triple bin composting system and that it’s painted purple! I love recycling and what is a more natural

form than composting? The idea of turning, what is potentially rubbish, into something valuable, sweet smelling and nutritious is irresistible. Not sweet smelling? Snotty green sludge? Read on! What to put in? A good mix of greens and browns Greens: • Raw veg waste, weeds, garden prunings, if you don’t have a shredder cut it up small. I have heard of running over it with a lawn mower but cannot vouch for its effectiveness. • Raw green kitchen waste, contents of tea bags (most bags don’t break down). • Grass clippings

Jobs to do in OCTOBER
Browns: Card and paper, I shred all my sensitive information and add this. Small twigs or shredded woody material and perennial flower stems although I keep the hollow ones to make bug houses.
Cover it to keep the heat in and prevent it getting too wet when it rains, I use a spare piece of pond liner but a wooden lid, a piece of carpet or even cardboard will help. Ensure it’s weighted down so it won’t blow away.
Avoid: • Annual weed seeds or perennial roots i.e. dandelions, thistles, nettles, bindweed and ground elder are my nemesis, but you may have others. Compost these separately in a black bin liner with a few holes or add to landfill waste. Stand this on a hard surface as pernicious weeds will work their way out and root at first contact with the soil. Once rotted down they can be added to the compost. If your compost is weedy, dig trenches and bury it.
Turning it regularly encourages it to heat up again as any un-rotted material starts to break down.
• Remove leaves from the crowns of plants to prevent them rotting. • Lightly tidy the borders, clear weeds and cut down flower stems. Leave seed heads for the birds.
Layers do not want to be too thick, particularly of grass or very wet green material; about 10cm (4”) is plenty, as this is where the green sludge comes in.
• Protect salads or late root crops with fleece. • Create a new strawberry bed or prepare to plant new fruit trees.
• Meat and cooked foods will attract vermin.
• Diseased material should be burnt or added to landfill waste. Autumn Leaves
Leaf mould: Keep leaves separate as they take a lot longer to break down. Punch a few holes in a black bin liner fill it with well-damped leaves and tuck it behind the shed for a year. You will be rewarded with a wonderful material that is brilliant for making your own compost or as a treat for woodland plants.
Happy gardening!
In the Flower Garden:
In the Vegetable Garden:
In the Greenhouse:
• Clear out the greenhouse and prepare for cold weather. • Bring frost tender plants into the greenhouse. • Sow early annuals e.g. Sweet peas in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.
Pots and Containers:
• Plant up with winter/spring bedding displays if not already done so. • Keep watering to a minimum. Compost needs to be moist not wet.
Lawn Care:
• Reduce mowing and keep the lawn clear of leaves to prevent damage to the grass. • Last chance to sow or lay a new lawn this month or wait till spring.

Perfectly PRIMED by Fiona Hood
Renaissance Health & Beauty
T
he makeup industry has seen primers pushed into the limelight as the new “must have for the perfectly made up look. Primers are the makeup essential to aid a smooth flawless look. They act as an adhesive to extend the staying power of makeup and often include added ingredients for the benefit of your skin. They minimise the appearance of large pores and even out the texture of the complexion. Primer is applied to a moisturised face prior to foundation and should be smoothed over the whole face, especially on areas of concern such as fine lines and larger pores. The product helps foundation to glide on and stay all day. Primers can also contain a number of key ingredients which are great for protection and repair of the skin and can include vitamins, minerals and peptides. They can come in gel, cream or powder form and can be clear or coloured. I prefer a clear gel primer that leaves
a velvety texture which makes it very easy to apply foundation especially if you prefer a mineral powder base. They are also suitable for all skin types from oily, helping to reduce shine, to dry, which will help lock moisture into the skin. Perfect in summer and winter these power products will give fantastic results every time.

THE MODERN MAN
MALE GROOMING G
rooming and beauty regimes have become an essential part of our everyday lives, for both men and women. From what was once limited to the daily morning shave of the face, male grooming has now evolved to the whole body.
In the 1960s, many men let their hair grow wild and free, while the 70s saw big moustaches and hairy chests as a defining point in masculinity. By the 90s, it was more socially acceptable for men to shave or wax different parts of their body, and to enjoy a more thorough grooming regime.
Today sees the male grooming market set to exceed the £1-billion mark by 2018 – men are certainly taking their grooming more seriously. Moisturisers, eye creams, face masks, eye serums and shaving foams are becoming a must-have for men as well as women.
We speak to Neeta Matharu from Flawless Faces about male grooming Q: Why can’t men just use women’s products, how do they differ? “Men’s skin tends to be thicker, so most products are designed to penetrate deeper into the skin. Women’s products tend to be more fragrant, so male products are designed with different smells to give them a more masculine appeal. For example Liquorish, which is used for healing properties, also oil of cloves which slow down the re-growing of hair, commonly used after waxing treatments.”
Q: What daily beauty regime would you recommend for a man? “Start with a light exfoliation using an exfoliating face wash, this helps lift hair away from the skin and prevent ingrown hairs. After you should moisturise and then use an eye serum or cream to revive the skin. Decléor have a product call Clean Skin Scrub Gel 125ml £21.50 - This daily skincare product formulated with Essential Oils of Clove and Eucalyptus is ideal for preparing the skin for shaving. With dual action: cleansing and exfoliating, it leaves the skin glowing, fresh and energised. Use
Concept_October 15_26-51.indd 34
in the morning before shaving and/or in the evening to deep cleanse the skin.”
Massage £39.50 (75mins) and waxing for face and body are also very popular.”
Q: Are there any DIY methods of male grooming you can recommend?
Q: Have you noticed a rise in male clientele?
“You can easily create your own DIY aftershave cream with 1/8 cup coconut oil; 1/2 cup shea butter, softened; 2 to 4 drops of essential oil for fragrance (optional). Combine these ingredients in a food processor or blender, and keep refrigerated between uses.”
Q: What are the most popular treatments for men? “We have quite a few popular treatments including the Express Energising Facial £28 (30mins); Intense Energising Facial £40 (60mins) and the Decléor Aroma Body Massage £32 (30mins), £43 (60mins), £53 (90mins). Our own Flawless Faces treatments, the Hopi Ear Candle £30 (45mins); Indian Head Massage £27 (45mins); Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage £23 (30mins), £29.50 (45mins); Full Body
“Yes, men are becoming more acknowledged as a part of the grooming industry, highlighting that men get just as stressed as women and also enjoy relaxing. Our male clients like to have massages, body waxing and brow waxing or threading.”
Q: When did you introduce the male range to Flawless Faces? “We’ve always had a male skincare range available for clients, even before we moved to our new location. We want to make sure that specialist grooming products are available to male and female clients, so we have always stocked a male skincare range. Katie Bland from M&Arc shares her top skincare tips for men Q: How does male skin differ from female’s and what’s your skin care advice? “Aside from facial hair, men have testosterone stimulation which causes an increase in skin thickness of around 25%. They also have greater oil production which contributes to acne. “On the flip side, men have a higher
collagen density than women, resulting in male skin often appearing around 15 years younger than women’s. Unfortunately, with men tending to be less SPF-savvy than ladies, the ‘15-year difference’ becomes less apparent - keep the skin young by using a daily moisturiser containing SPF. “The most important advice to give, especially for men just starting a skincare routine, is to keep it simple. The simpler your routine, the more likely you are to stick with it. Skincare products are more advanced than ever, just two or three products can target many ailments.”
Q: What male treatments do you offer? “Here at M&Arc we focus on keeping the salon unisex so all customers, male and female feel comfortable and welcome. With this in mind, all the treatments we offer are easily tailored to suit a male customer; from facials to massage and waxing to manicures, we offer something for everyone.”
Q: What male treatments would you recommend? “With most male customers having skin concerns, the best treatment to recommend would be a Dermalogica facial. Dermalogica pride themselves on delivering noticeable results and are purposely created to suit both male and female skin. By having your skin analysed by our therapists we can specifically
Concept_October 15_26-51.indd 35
recommend products that can not only target your current skin concerns, but that will also keep your skin healthy and clear over years to come.”
Q: Have you noticed an increase in men coming for skincare treatments? “Yes, definitely. In recent years male grooming has become the quickest growing point not only in hair, but beauty salons too. According to research, over a fifth of customers on a salon’s database are men, many who are seeking to improve skin complaints; such as shaving issues, lines/ wrinkles, premature aging and acne.”
Q: Do you have any top tips for shaving? “Ideally shower before shaving, the heat softens the skin allowing for a closer shave. “Use an exfoliating cleanser. By combining the cleanse and exfoliation, not only is it quicker, but the exfoliating helps lift hairs ready for shaving and helps keep razor burn and ingrown hairs at bay. “Light pressure, never rush, and rinse the blade after each stroke. Finally, stop slapping on the aftershave. Aftershave’s main ingredient is alcohol, therefore can irritate and stop the skin reforming its natural barriers - hence your skin becoming more sensitive. Instead, use a post shave cream/ balm to help soothe the skin.” M&Arc Hair & Beauty 10 South Street, Bourne, PE10 9LT t: 01778 426262

Hurrah for Musar! C
hateau Musar is a wine I have enjoyed on many occasions. What is quite startling to the unfamiliar is that this wine comes from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon; a country not recognised generally for its winemaking. It is an area so hot and dry that making quality wine sounds impossible but this is not a new phenomenon; history suggests that viticulture in this region has existed for the past 6000 years.
Leigh Johnson
is a holder of the Advanced Certificate from the Wine and Spirits Educational Trust and is an avid wine collector and enthusiast. You can follow his wine thoughts on Facebook by searching Bells Farm Vintners.
The key aspect to producing fine wine in the Bekaa Valley is its high altitude, at around 1,000 metres, compared, for the sake of reference, to Burgundy and Bordeaux whose best wine producing appellations never exceed around 300 metres. As every geography student knows, temperature reduces by around 2 degrees for every 1000 feet of altitude and this means that despite the often intolerable heat at sea level, the growing conditions at Bekka’s high altitude is not dissimilar to one of the worlds greatest wine producing areas, Bordeaux. It will come as no surprise, therefore, to learn that the grapes that go into making this wine are traditional French varieties at around one third Cabernet Sauvignon, one third Carignan and one third Cinsault. Following the harvest, the grapes undergo a lengthy fermentation in concrete vats and are then transferred to French oak barrels for one year and then back to concrete vats for a further two years. The wine is then aged in bottle and only released seven years after the harvest Chateau Musar is certified organic and the producer confirms the wine is suitable for vegans. The wine tends to be a muddy, deep ruby colour in its youth, with orange tints at the rim as the wine ages. The nose often has a certain funkiness; a gaminess about it, mixed with ripe, baked black fruit. On the palate, the wine is rich, full with soft tannins and moderate acidity. Ripe sweet prunes, mulberries, pepper and African spices are typical flavours. The wine is hugely aromatic and full bodied and it stands up well to highly flavoured food. Whilst I wouldn’t suggest wasting it as a partner to a Friday night kebab, it makes an excellent accompaniment to roast lamb with garlic or a spicy lamb tagine. The wine is widely available from both Majestic and Waitrose at around £20 per bottle and for sure, it will definitely surprise and delight your friends at any dinner party.

our local mothers have taken a stand and are fighting for the restoration of the Wellhead play park, their charitable group Bourne2Play will not rest until the families of Bourne have a park they can be proud of.
Play is such an important part of children’s lives; it’s pivotal in both their physical and mental development. Access to a local play area is not only a chance for children to let off steam, but it’s also a place where their imaginations can run wild and they can develop their social skills. Imagine the dismay local mothers and childminders Claire Carter and Paula Brett, both from Bourne felt when the main play area in the town, one they used regularly over the years, had long since seen better days and was getting worse each time they visited. One spring day in 2014 Claire and Paula decided that enough was enough, the two women had visited the park and were saddened at the state of disrepair it was in; several pieces of equipment were cordoned off with red tape, swings had been removed and the fence was broken. “As a mum of two and a childminder I feel it’s so important to have a safe, challenging play area that we can walk to and enjoy,” said Claire. “At the moment we travel to the surrounding villages to use their updated and clean play areas. It’s extremely important to me to be able to give the families of Bourne something to boast about to their family and friends and something that will attract visitors to the town.” Claire, along with Paula and other local mums Anna Rogers and Lisa Copestake put the wheels in motion by contacting South Kesteven District Council (SKCD) and setting up a petition, calling for action to
restore the failing park. Anna said: “With Bourne growing at the rate it is, it really should be able to offer more to families than an out-of-date play area with broken equipment and a swing my husband used to play on 30 years ago! “Our petition was widely circulated around Bourne and we received fantastic support from the parents on the Bourne Parents Facebook page. Thanks to the support of the Bourne and District Round Table we were also able to host a stand at that year’s Bourne Festival and collected over 1393 signatures.”
However, despite the success of the petition, it was clear to Claire, Paula, Anna and Lisa that getting a new play area was not going to be easy. The added complication of the SKDC leasing the parkland from Bourne United Charities and the small sum the SKDC had to maintain the play area, meant that someone would need to act as a driving force, facilitator if anything was going to change, and Bourne2Play was formed, a charitable group with the sole aim of getting a better play area for Bourne. “Since its formation the group has received support from Bourne United Charities, the Round Table and many local business and has been able to host several successful fundraising attempts including two years at the Bourne Festival, a picnic in the park, roller and Christmas discos and an Easter Trail,” said Anna.
“I moved to Bourne from South London three years ago, where we were extremely lucky to have amazing playgrounds even in the poorer boroughs. When I moved to Bourne I was appalled to see how awful the Wellhead playground was. It was (and still is) run down. “When Claire and I started on this journey a child had fallen through the toddler climbing frame and hurt their leg. For a town the size of Bourne, that is growing constantly due to the council allowing so many housing estates, the children here deserve a much better playground to play, be safe and have fun in.” Paula Brett, Bourne.

“Bourne has a lot of young families, three primary schools and two secondary schools. Many children don’t have the luxury of a large back garden to play in and need somewhere go to have healthy fun. The junior equipment at the Wellhead is outdated and desperately needs replacing and the newer toddler area is reaching the end of its lifespan. The Wellhead park is a beautiful green space and I feel the current play area lets it down. “It would be great to be able to have the new play area in place for next summer. If there are any local business who feel they could help us fund the new play area, we would love to hear from them.” Anna Rogers, Bourne.
“I love taking my daughter to the Wellhead. It’s an absolute pleasure in all seasons to go for a walk, see the ducks, but the play area is such a huge disappointment. We love living in Bourne, it’s a fabulous community and we deserve a park to be really proud of, where we can spend quality time, whether it be with a picnic in the summer months or on a crisp winters day crunching leaves on the way. Bourne2Play are working very hard to encourage further investments and fundraisers to get the park completed as soon as possible. We would love it if all adults and children could get involved in this community project, whether it be by coming to one of our fundraising events or by holding their own small fundraisers.” Lisa Copestake, Bourne.
“Highlights for the group so far have included the SKDC agreeing to £40,000 to be used to improve the play area and a donation of £10,000 from the Round Table. The group was also awarded £900 from Lincolnshire County Council, thanks to the help of Councillor Helen Powell, and a further £1,000 was received from the Lincolnshire Police Crime Commissioner’s Fund. Thanks to this and money raised from events so far, Bourne2Play is now over halfway to its target amount of £100,000. “It’s amazing what we have managed to achieve so far and we’re so grateful for all of the support we have received,” said Anna. “However, we’re now looking to local businesses and charities to help us
reach our target. The £100,000 raised will buy all-weather surfacing for the play area and equipment, making the Wellhead a ‘destination park’, a place people will travel to see, drawing people to the town.” Bourne2Play enlisted the help of local schoolchildren to help design the new play area. “Local primary school children have had great fun designing their dream parks and these ideas have been included in the design process,” explained Anna. “A public consultation will take place to decide the final design of the park, which will include
an amazing central fortress climbing tower for older children, a toddler area, designated teen equipment and seating areas. We hope to have this exciting new play area in place by Spring/Summer 2016.”
For more information and updates on the park’s progress ‘Like’ the Bourne2Play Facebook page or visit www.bourne2play.co.uk and if you have any questions or would like to get involved email enquiries@bourne2play.co.uk OCTOBER 15 CONCEPT MAGAZINE / 45

THE SHOW GOES ON
Sleaford’s Georgian Gem
O
riginally built as a theatre in the 1800s, The Playhouse has had many roles; including serving as an infant school and as store rooms. Now, it’s back to (show) business. There is something special about the theatre; the rawness of the performances, the intimacy and the emotions stirred. Sleaford Little Theatre, are an amatuer dramatics society, dedicated to captivating audiences by telling stories and to supporting their community. The society were originally based in a Methodist Church five miles outside of the town, they bought the The Playhouse building in Sleaford in 1994 with the dream of restoring it to it’s former glory. After years of restoration work, which is ongoing, their vision became reality and The Playhouse opened its doors in October 2000 as a theatre once again, one of only two Georgian theatres remaining in the country. Typical of a Georgian playhouse the exterior is simple and unassuming, with only a small ‘oiel de boeuf ’ (oval window) beneath the eaves for decoration. Inside, the auditorium features raked stalls seating that rise up to raked gallery, seating 121 in total, creating an
Concept_October 15_26-51.indd 49
intimate and captivating atmosphere. Sleaford Little Theatre now had the ‘home’ they’d dreamed of, and the town had an invaluable venue for all sorts of events and performances. Since its reopening The Playhouse has made its mark on the town, entertaining audiences with a wide variety of breathtaking productions, from classics such as J.B. Priestley’s ‘An Inspector Calls’, Daphne du Maurier’s ‘Rebecca’ and Charles Dickens’ ‘David Copperfield’, to comedies such as Lloyd & Croft’s hit ‘’Allo ‘Allo’ and Alan Ayckbourne’s ‘Communicating Doors’. However, engaging plays are not all that The Playhouse has to offer, the town’s Georgian gem has also become a popular venue for local bands and solo artists, to professional touring theatre companies and musicians. The Playhouse promises to continue delivering, by providing an interesting range of events to enthral and captivate its audience. The Playhouse can also be hired out, a truly unique venue for any event. For more information visit www.sleafordplayhouse.co.uk

Fall into Autumn Summer may have come to an end, but never fear, there’s still a lot of fun to be had this Autumn
A
utumn is the season for long walks; crunching through the woods and local parks, the month for feeling refreshingly crisp air on your face, for splashing in puddles and for snuggling under blankets with a mug of hot chocolate. Here are a few of our favourite things to do in Autumn…
1
Go for a walk
There’s something about the crisp Autumn air, crunching through the leaves that’s really good for the soul. We are lucky to have many beautiful walks right on our doorstep. Burghley House is magnificent at this time of year (and the various cakes in The Orangery restaurant are delicious), Burghley Park is also great for a short or long walk where you can stop and watch the deer and end your day with a visit the Courtyard Shop. Ferry Meadows with its fantastic play areas and scenic walks is a firm favourite with families and Rutland Water’s beauty really ‘pops’ at this time of year. If you fancy going a bit further afield why not take a look at Fineshade Woods, go cycling, or explore the wildlife and history on foot, before unwinding in the cafe or browsing in the shops, Other fantastic Autumn walks include; Bourne Woods, Sandringham and Easton Walled Gardens (until October 30).
2
Visit local museums
Many local museums are free to explore or only ask for a small donation. Peterborough Museum has many free, interesting exhibits and interactive displays to captivate the whole family; including natural history, art collections, social history and the Norman Cross collection of Prisoner of War craftwork. For more information visit www. vivacity-peterborough.com. Discover Stamford, is a vibrant new heritage display in the Stamford Library. Visitors will discover the rich history of the town and be inspired to go out and explore for themselves… where “a stroll through Stamford’s streets provides a walk through 1,000 years of history”.
3
Get t
Once we hit Autumn we know that the party season is literally just around the corner. We also know however that Autumn and Winter are the times that we all love to tuck into our favourite comfort foods. Adding exercise into your daily routine is the best way to make sure you can still enjoy your favourite winter stew and keep yourself feeling fabulous in your party outfits.

Get crafty
Autumn is a great season for crafting; the leaves, chestnuts, pine cones, acorns - so inspiring. Why not head down to The Craft Centre for Autumn-themed activities, as well as spooktacular Halloween inspired craft during the October half term, or you could visit Paint a Pot Place and design an Autumn-themed mug, plate, teapot or vase. Go foraging
One of the best things about Autumn is the fruit it bears. After foraging, freeze the fruits you have picked to later be used in an array of delicious pies, crumbles and jams that can be made and enjoyed all year round.
7
Carve a pumpkin
From the traditional, spooky Jack O’Lantern to jolly or elagant, pumpkin carving needn’t be just for Halloween.
Enjoy some comfort food
Many of our local pubs are offering scrumptious Autumn menus in their cosy and comfortable restaurants. Why not visit White Horse in Baston or The Five Bells on a Main Street of Edenham and try out something delicious from their extensive menus.
8
Plant spring bulbs
Yes, we may be waving goodbye to Summer, but now is the time to be planting your spring blooms. Bulbs can be planted right up to December. Visit Waterside Garden Centre in Baston for a large range of colourful and vibrant spring bulbs.
9
Go conker picking
There’s a certain thrill that comes with conker picking. Children of all ages (and grown-ups too) can’t resist collecting these shiny, Autumn gems. They make great Autumnal decorations in the house, plus they are said to keep spiders away.
10
Pamper yourself
The changing weather that comes with the changing of seasons can play havoc with our skin and hair. Treat yourself to a haircut, or how about an invigorating facial? OCTOBER 15 CONCEPT MAGAZINE / 51

No Will, No Say Difficult Conversations
We all die. How do you want to do it?
T
his month’s conversation is probably the most difficult How you want your end-of-life care handled?
Don’t leave things to chance, Act Today
Will & Probate Services for all of the things you need to do, but haven’t got around to.
It tends to stop us in our tracks. Discussing death makes nobody comfortable, and as a result, we avoid the discussion entirely. You probably know someone who says that they want to be taken to Switzerland where assisted suicide is legal. It is even a hot topic in parliament at the moment, it may even be a family member. But what you don’t know is if they are serious or not – they might be but the conversation is a serious one and not one for the pub. So make time for our fourth difficult conversation and be brave, tell your nearest and dearest what you want and what you have done to facilitate what you want. When you have had the difficult conversation give us a call and we will make sure that you have the foundation stones in place to ensure that your death is a good death and what you want happens.

RECIPE
Cumin
G
et into the mood of Halloween by carving a pumpkin. If you’ve never carved a pumpkin before, follow our easy step by step to create a spook-tacular masterpiece!
YOU WILL NEED:
spiced Carrot and Pumpkin soup
a pumpkin a small saw or serrated knife (never a straight-edged knife) a spoon or scoop a marker pen to draw your pattern or a printed template and sellotape a nail or drill bit (something with a sharp point)
Optional: A pumpkin carving kit (can usually be bought at supermarkets closer to Halloween or online from eBay or Amazon; expect to pay around £5, comes with small saws, a scoop, a drill and sometimes templates)
STEP BY STEP:
1. Choose a pumpkin
Pick a healthy pumpkin with no nicks, bruises, cuts or soft spots. Anywhere from 8-12in (20-30cm) is ideal. Too small and it will be tricky to accurately cut out your design. Too big and it will be a lot of hard work to cut through.
2. Cut the lid and scoop
Cut a circular lid around the stalk. Do not make the cut completely vertical; instead angle your saw towards the centre of the circle. The lid will then sit in a bowl-shape and won’t fall into the middle. Scoop out the stringy flesh and seeds with a spoon or scoop.
Ingredients: • • • • • • • •
3. Plan your pattern
If you are planning a basic jack-o-lantern, you can just draw the pattern directly onto the skin with a marker pen. For more complicated patterns, sellotape a template onto the flattest side of the pumpkin.
5. Start carving
Start with the smaller details of your design, sawing with a gentle back and forth motion. Be careful not to twist your saw or knife. Keep all the parts in place until the whole design is finished. When removing the pieces, start with the smaller ones first.
Concept_October 15_52-68.indd 55
4. Mark out the pattern
If using a template, take a small drill bit or nail and poke holes around the pattern, transferring the design onto the pumpkin. The holes need to be about 1/4in (0.5cm) apart, closer in intricate parts.
6. Tidy up your design
Once you have removed all the pieces tidy up the edges of the pattern. Remove any flesh that hasn’t come away properly and sharpen up any pieces of the design that need it.
1 tbsp of rapeseed oil or olive oil 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 1 red chilli, descended and finely chopped 1 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1 small pumpkin or medium butternut squash, peeled, descended and cubed 1 litre of vegetable stock
Optional topping: • Mixed seeds (pumpkin & sunflower) slightly toasted • 1-2tbsp finely chopped coriander
Method: 1. Heat oil in large saucepan and gently fry onion until soft. Add the garlic, chilli, ground cumin and ginger and stir. 2. Add the carrots and pumpkin or butternut squash and pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Cover and gently simmer for 10 - 15mins until the veg in tender. 3. Pour the soup into a blender and blitz until smooth. 4. Serve the soup in bowls with a sprinkling of toasted seeds and coriander. Recipe supplied by Rachael from The Little Soup Kitchen

Little Lies (Big Little Lies) by Liane Moriarty
Mrs Pander lives next door to Pirriwee Public Primary School. She loves to watch the parents and children go past. It is the night of the PTA Trivia Night and she is enjoying listening to the party. She can hear shouting though and swearing. Now she can see a fight and the police are arriving. What on earth is going on? Has there been a murder? Celeste is the mother of twin sons who are about to start school. With her super rich husband she seems to have a perfect life but she is often distant and distracted. Is she hiding something? Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She has a five year old daughter about to start school. Her ex-husband has moved to the same town with his new wife and they have a daughter the same age, also about to start school. Now her teenage daughter wants to go and live with her exhusband. It is all going wrong. Single mum Jane has moved to Pirriwee with her son Ziggy to make a new start. She looks so young, one of the working mums thinks she is a nanny. She soon, however, finds herself at the centre of a storm. On the first day of school an incident occurs in the playground, trivial at first
Concept_October 15_52-68.indd 56
Louie is a scruffy dog, whose owner has just given him a bath. Something is wrong – he smells too nice! Louie goes in search of his old smell. He asks a fox for advice, who sends him in the direction of an old boot. That smell is not quite right. Then he asks some snails who tell him to go to some stinky old bins but again the smell is not quite right. Then he rolls in some muck and jumps into a dirty pond. Finally he thinks he has got his special smell back! He trots proudly home to find his owner who does not enjoy the smell quite as much and off they go to the bathroom again! This is a beautifully illustrated book, ideal to read to young children.
but which turns into something nasty, setting parents against each other. Ziggy is accused of bullying. The other parents start to turn on Jane. As the book progresses we learn more about these women and other characters are introduced. The mums who believe their children are gifted and talented, the high-powered executive mum, the husbands and the poor teacher who is completely out of her depth. The PTA, who have arranged a fund raising Trivia Night. What they all have in common is secrets. They are all hiding something. Little lies leading to misunderstandings and more lies and ultimately to the death of a parent. Little Lies is a gripping and hugely enjoyable read.

Teen Reads at Stamford library Stamford Library has a well-stocked section specifically for teenagers and pre-teens. This section has two categories: TJ and TA. These categories are not just based on reading ability but on content, theme, the language used and the young person’s ability to fully understand what is being read. TJ is generally suitable for 10 to 13 year olds and TA is for 13 year olds and upwards. Parents should note that these categories are for guidance only. The books in these sections are specifically written for and aimed at young readers and are an excellent transition between junior stories and adult fiction including authors such as Matt Haig, Jonathan Meres, Veronica Roth and Anthony Horowitz.
Finally, the Bookseller magazine has, for the first time this year, held a Young Adult Book Prize. The winner is Only Ever Yours by Louise O’Neill. In this book, 16-year-olds Freida and Isabel are in their final year of school and waiting to see if they are selected as wives to wealthy and powerful men. The alternative, life as a concubine, is too awful to contemplate, so the intense competition between the girls over their looks starts to mount. The Bookseller team said: “We were blown away by this book. The strength of the voice from the first page, the depth of the subject matter and the feminist, dystopian plot kept us gripped all the way through.” All three of the books mentioned and many more can be borrowed from Stamford library.
Young readers can also get involved in the Lincolnshire Young People’s Book Award (LYPBA) by voting for their favourite books from a shortlist, in the Lincolnshire Libraries run award each year. The 2015 winner for 9-11 year olds was: My Brother’s Shadow by Tom Avery. This is a moving, surprising and ultimately comforting account of a young girl’s unique and very personal suffering. The vivid story is at times overwhelming and doesn’t shy away from the reality of some of the challenging life situations children can face. Beautifully written and packed full of hope for those in dark places. For 12-14 year olds the 2015 winner was: Half my Facebook Friends are Ferrets by J A Buckle, where a teenage boy sets out goals that he wants to do before his next birthday. Set out as diary entries, it is an extremely well written and witty book. For more information on the LYPBA, go to www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/libraries
The Summer Reading Challenge 2015 Two hundred and twenty two children started our Summer Reading Challenge this summer, which beat our record for last year. This year’s theme was Record Breakers. Each child was asked to read six books throughout the summer holidays, making four trips to the library in total. We ran two craft activities which were very successful, “Going Places” and “Animal Magic”. Approximately sixty five children attended each session.
Autumn Craft Activity This will be held in the October half term holiday, on 29 October, 2-4.30pm. Please join us for “Autumn Antics”.

A moment with...
Lorraine Cunningham
T
his month we meet Lorraine Cunningham, owner of Set in Stone memorials, which is based in Bourne. 1. Tell us about your business “Having been a sign-writer both by hand and machine for 25 years, I decided to set up Set in Stone Memorials as a new company with the aim to supply memorial headstones direct to the public. “Often a bereaved family are not aware that they can go directly to the Memorial Mason and that they don’t need to go through their undertaker; by taking this route families can make a considerable saving financially. Going directly to a Memorial Mason also means that they’re not necessarily having to choose a memorial out of a brochure, but that they’re able to have something a bit different than everyone else - something bespoke and meaningful to them. At Set in Stone we strive to give the personal touch by making each and every memorial individual, providing a fitting tribute to the memory of the deceased.
2. What do you like most about Bourne?
9
*
“I have lived within four miles of Bourne since the age of four and I moved into the town in 2000. I love the fact that Bourne is such a friendly town and that within reason, you can get much of what you need without leaving. I’ve been known to go to Peterborough, spend the day browsing the shops, only to come back to Bourne and find just what I’ve spent the day looking for!”
3. What changes would you like to see for Bourne in the coming years? “I think that it’s great that Bourne is expanding, but I really do think that we’re in need of more shops of all types, and of course
when we get them for people to use them. I’m a great believer in shopping locally, not just because it’s a lot friendlier and a good way to meet and get known, but financially you save money by saving fuel - which is also better for the environment.”
4. What do you do in your spare time? “I don’t get an awful lot of spare time, but with the little time I do get I enjoy spending it with
my husband, children and granddaughters. I particularly love watching my granddaughters Erin and Alice doing gymnastics, which they do four times a week - it’s fantastic.”
5. Tell us something we might not know about you By nature I am very lazy, if I could get away with just sitting and reading all day I would or watch the girls doing their gymnastics.
