News - in - brief BURGHLEY PARK CRICKET CLUB CRICKET WEEK AND BEER FESTIVAL Monday 6th – Friday 10th July 2015. Sponsored By Hindmarch & Co (Stamford) Ltd

In recent years the Burghley Park Cricket Club Cricket Week and Beer Festival has become one of the social events of the summer, and this year the club plan to make it even bigger. Held, as always, in the first full week in July and kindly sponsored again by Hindmarch & Co (Stamford) Ltd the Cricket Week commences on Monday 6th July and builds throughout the week to the finale on Friday 10th July. The week consists of all-day games on each day of the week, starting at 10am, and from 6pm every evening the ever-popular six-a-side competition takes place. This year is the 57th year of the six-a-side competition or the ‘Burghley Sixes’, as it has become popularly known, and it is proving as popular as ever with crowds starting to get back to the numbers attending in those heady days of the 60s. The Stamford Mercury of the time reported crowds of two or three deep around the boundary with numbers into the thousands. 15 local teams are invited to take part, alongside a home team entry, with three games being played each evening starting at 6.00 pm. The semi-finals and final take place on the Friday

evening, with a live band performing after the sixes final on the Friday evening. In the last few years another highlight has been the introduction of a real ale festival in the Cabel UK beer tent. At least 20 real ales are available each day and evening during the week and so it is worth visiting the Park during the week in order to sample the delights of some wonderful real ales from near and far while at the same time watching some exhilarating six hitting during the ‘sixes’ games. To encourage the players, Buckles Solicitors will be awarding a ‘Champagne Moment’ each evening, with the winner receiving a bottle of champagne. There are a couple of other new additions for this year’s Cricket Week and Beer Festival, with the introduction of Fancy Dress Friday, sponsored by Oakham Ales. Fancy dress is encouraged for all spectators on Friday evening, with a prize for the best fancy dress. We have also been lucky to secure a Spitfire and Hurricane flypast on the Friday. So, what could be better on a balmy summer evening? Go on pay a visit and make the crowds even bigger this year.

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR THORPE HALL’S STARLIGHT HIKE It’s time to dust off your trainers, grab a friend and get registered for this year’s Thorpe Hall Hospice Starlight Hike. After a year’s break, the popular fundraising event is back in the calendar, on Saturday, August 8, with a new look, a new route and lots of new reasons to get involved. For those looking for a challenge there’s a 10km route taking in some of Peterborough’s prettiest parkland. For those keen to take the more leisurely option or maybe looking for a family challenge there’s a 5km circuit available. Both routes will start and finish at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough, with the start scheduled for early evening so walkers return for their triumphant finish down Thorpe Hall’s stunning drive as the sun sets.

s proved a popular fun

ha The Starlight Hike

There will be a warm up to get those feet moving before the starting pistol is fired, and entertainment along the marshalled route to keep the motivation levels high. There’ll be a barbecue in the beautiful gardens of Thorpe Hall Hospice and activities to keep the supporters busy while the walkers are on route. All the money raised at this year’s Starlight Hike will help pay for the services in the new Thorpe Hall Hospice, which will welcome patients from the start of July. Thorpe Hall’s senior event fundraiser Jo Killick says: “We’re thrilled to have the Starlight Hike back on our events calendar and delighted that, this year, we will be able to start and finish at Thorpe Hall. Walking down the drive as the sun sets to be welcomed by staff and patients will, we’re sure, make it a really memorable occasion.â€? The event is open to all ages including children. It costs just ÂŁ15 to enter with all entrants receiving a must-have Starlight Hike t-shirt to wear during the event. Walkers are asked to raise ÂŁ100 through sponsorship. To find out more about this year’s Starlight Hike visit the website www.sueryder. org/starlighthike/thorpehall or call the fundraising team on 01733 225993.

THE DEEPINGS RAFT RACE 2015 Have you built your raft yet? The Deepings Raft Race taking place on Sunday August 2 is drawing closer, so get cracking on those wonderfully wacky designs! This year’s theme is ‘Cartoon Characters’ and while you don’t have to dress up or design your rafts to this theme, it certainly does add to the fun!

If you want to test your raft prior to the event the team at Deepings Raft Race might be able to help. To book in a team, ask about testing or anything else, contact Deepings Raft Race via their website. If you enter a team you can do it just for fun which will be helping towards some great causes or you can collect for your own charity (all details are on the booking form). The nominated charities for this year’s event are Dementia Support South Lincs and The Exotic Pet Refuge in Deeping St. James. There are still a few slots available for people willing to help out as a marshall on the day (2 hour slots). Additionally, any budding local bands that would like to showcase themselves at the pre-raft race music night should get in touch. It’s not all about the rafts, there will also be a huge array of stalls, classic cars and bikes, a funfair, music and dance demonstrations, and a “bus bar. Plus, competitions including prizes for the ‘Best fancy dress’ and ‘Best selfie’, a treasure hunt and lots more! Make sure you put this fantastic, fun and unusual event in your diary, it promises to be a great day!

It’s a boy Congratulations to team member Jemma and her partner Andrew, on the safe arrival of baby Marley. Marley came into the world on May 31 (sharing the same birthday as his daddy), weighing 7lb 5oz. Mum and baby are well. Best wishes from all of your friends at Concept.

BASTON

in the BLITZ 2015

B

aston in the Blitz, the district’s first 1940’s-themed event had its successful debut in 2014. The village of Baston has a well-deserved reputation for staging first-class events and Baston in the Blitz certainly lived up to this high standard. Last year’s premier event attracted a very healthy attendance by an enthusiastic public.

This year’s Baston in the Blitz promises to be bigger and better. The event has now expanded to run over the complete weekend of Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August from 10am to 5pm both days. Every aspect of the event has grown, including more WW2 living history displays and many more vintage traders. The live 1940’s entertainment that proved so popular last year has also been increased to feature six of the UK’s top performers, including a return visit by Paul Casper as George Formby. The entertainment will run continuously throughout both days. Without a doubt the stars of this year’s show will be the Spitfire owned by Terry Arlow, and Steve Heappey’s replica Messerschmitt Bf109. Visitors to the event will be able to have their photograph taken seated in the cockpit of the Spitfire wearing an authentic flying jacket and helmet. Both aircraft come complete with their own ground crews and authentic period support equipment. One enormously popular feature of last year’s event making a welcome return is the

Morse Code activity for youngsters, kindly organised by members of the Duxford Radio Society, where participants are taught the basics of Morse Code and receive a certificate for transmitting their own name in Morse. The Lakeside Model Group will be inviting the public to try their hand at model aircraft flying on their large-screen flight simulator as well as displaying a range of their members’ scale flying models. The ever-popular Sniper Alley shooting range run by ex-RM Commandos will also be making a return this year. For the young at heart there will be a number of vintage amusements and rides plus a traditional Punch and Judy show. Visitors can have their souvenir photo taken posing with a vintage WW2 jeep in the main marquee and have it printed moments later by the official onsite event photographer. There will also be a wide range of vintage military and civilian vehicles on static display including tractors and engines. Other stalls around the event site will be operated by the Baston Environment Group, Baston W.I., the RAF Association, the Royal

British Legion, SSAFA and the Blenheim Society. The ex-serviceman’s charity, Bridge for Heroes, will be displaying their travelling military museum. The event will be fully catered, including a licensed bar selling real ales inside the main marquee. There will be 1940’s hairstylists operating onsite ready to give the ladies a quick makeover ready for the Saturday night dance taking place in the main marquee at 7.30pm on Saturday 1st August. Vocal entertainment will be provided by Katie Mustang and Swingtime Steve with dance music by the Blitz Dancers. Tickets are £8 each, available from the event organisers. A licensed bar will be operating and hot food will be available. The event will be opened on both days by the well-known Winston Churchill impersonator, Peter Austwick, and on the Sunday morning there will be a short commemorative service conducted by the Reverend Canon Mostyn Davies attended by a contingent from the Deeping & Langtoft branch of the Royal British Legion plus military re-enactors. Entry prices for the event will be £5 per adult and £3 Senior’s concession. Children under 16 accompanied by an adult will be admitted free of charge. A weekend ticket for adults allowing entry on both days will be £7. Parking is free and reserved disabled parking is available (please contact the organisers). To reserve tickets for the Saturday night dance, book a disabled parking space, or for any other enquiries, the event organisers can be contacted on 01778 561148 or enquiries@bastonblitz.org. The Wishing Well, Dyke

The Five Bells, Edenham

The White Horse, Baston

At The Wishing Well Inn your taste buds will be truly spoilt with the delightful range of fresh, seasonal foods on offer, not forgetting its delicious Sunday carvery which is not to be missed.

Located in the charming village of Edenham, The Five Bells is the perfect country venue for a meal or drink with family and friends, priding itself on offering a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The recently refurbished restaurant combines some of the 19th Century pub’s original features, such as exposed beams and walls, with fresh and tasteful modern comforts.

An 18th Century country pub located in the heart of the village of Baston. Sympathetically renovated two years ago, staying true to its farming heritage, The White Horse offers a friendly and

The pub sources everything as local as possible, rearing their own beef and pork at a farm based just a few miles away, and make everything in house where they can. Perfect wines for

Leigh Johnson

is a holder of the Advanced Certificate from the Wine and Spirits Educational Trust and is an avid wine collector and enthusiast. You can follow his wine thoughts on Facebook by searching Bells Farm Vintners.

A SUMMER BBQ N

othing encapsulates summer better than a gathering of friends and family around a sizzling BBQ. This month Leigh Johnson selects his favourite wine matches for this favourite summer feast.

Practically all meats and most vegetables will BBQ well and that familiar caramelised, charred flavour is the perfect summer signature. This is not fancy food. It is rustic, full-on and full-flavoured. Delicate wines are no match and instead, it’s a time to bring out the vinous big guns. The wines that match most easily with BBQ fare are full-bodied, ripe and rich with pronounced flavours. These are high octane. We are not looking for elegance and sophistication; no, we seek more Aussie rules football than Henley Regatta. Europe has many regions where wines would fit the bill but the high tempo wines best suited to BBQ food tend to be ‘new world’, with its bolder flavours, tropical nuances and more immediate, up front fruit. I have looked at a number of locally available wines. There are so many to choose from but the following would all be highly recommended. A terrific bargain from Waitrose is the Peter Lehmann, Portrait Shiraz, 2012 at just £9.99. Wonderfully made, notes of ripe cherries, plums and sweet black fruits. It has plenty of acidity to cut through the fattiness of pork belly rashers or sausages. It is smooth and spicy, powerful and delicious.

Concept_July 15_1-25.indd 18

As an alternative, try the wonderful Domaines Baron de Rothschild, Los Vascos, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza, 2013 at just £9.34 (when two or more bottles are bought) from Majestic. Made by the team from first-growth Chateau Lafite in Bordeaux, this Argentinian wine shows all the class and breeding of its French cousin in a more BBQ-friendly format. It is classic Cabernet Sauvignon; cedar, woodsmoke, blackcurrants and pencil lead. Juicy acidity gives it freshness and lift and fine, ripe tannins give it structure and depth. It would be perfect with a thick, rare steak. For white wine options the choice is equally broad. Try the Mediterra Assyrtiko, 2013 from Crete. It has a rich tropical bouquet of peaches and mango and a hint of pineapple. On the palate it shows refreshing acidity and notes of cut grass, acacia and citrus fruits and it goes so well with BBQ fish, particularly sardines and mackerel. It’s a steal at £11.99 from Marks and Spencer. For stronger flavors such as pork or chicken, we need a more upfront white, bolder and more self-assured. A perfect match would be the Rustenburg, Chardonnay, South Africa, 2012 at £13.99 from Waitrose. It’s a benchmark Cape Chardonnay with a focused mineral core, a touch of orange peel, apricots and white stone fruits. There is just a hint of oak but it’s well judged and just adds complexity without dominating in any way. This is a grown up, serious wine that would certainly give huge amounts of pleasure. Lastly, how about a delicious Rosé? Rosé wines comes in a varying degree of both quality and flavors. From almost just a hint of pink to bordering on crimson, no other wine has such a spectrum on offer. Really do try to avoid the very low cost budget wines, such as Blossom Hill, Echo Falls or Gallo; in my view these are very poorly

made and the flavours just, well, unimpressive. Why not try an English Rosé? These are wines that are very well suited to our climate and for around £10 per bottle you should find very good examples. I found the Marks and Spencer, English Rosé, 2014 an excellent wine. Made from largely Pinot Noir and a dash of Dornfelder, M&S make this wine with Denbies, one of England’s most respected wine producers to produce a slightly off-dry, very fresh rose, bursting with crushed strawberries and raspberries and well worth a try at £10 per bottle. Fingers crossed for a fantastic summer and the opportunity to try these lovely wines.

This month I’m drinking...

Domaine Tempier Rosé

Continuing the summer theme I have returned to a perennial favourite of mine, Domaine Tempier Rosé, from Bandol, a small enclave adjacent to Provence in the south of France. This in my view is the best Rosé wine in the world! It is made from the Mourvedre grape which gives it more structure and power than most Rosés and it has notes of red summer berries, a hint of white pepper and a touch of spice, all of which makes it ideal as either an aper itif or with food. Buy from A&B Vintners , approximately £20 per bottle. Sold out for this year but do look out for it in early 2016.

Awful Auntie by David Walliams

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

Rachel catches the same commuter train every morning. The train stops for a signal at the same place and she can see into the back gardens of the houses near the train track. She watches the people with their everyday routines and envies them their happy settled lives especially one couple she calls ‘Jess and Jason’. Until one day she sees something from the train that changes everything she had been thinking about ‘Jess and Jason’. Then she reads in the newspaper that Jess is really called Megan and she’s missing. This makes her husband, Jason (actually called Scott), the prime suspect in her disappearance. Rachel doesn’t think Scott has harmed his wife due to what she saw from the train, but will the police believe her? Rachel has problems of her own; she cannot accept the end of her marriage. Even though her ex-husband, Tom, is now married to Anna with a young child. She is prone to alcoholic blackouts and is not judged to be a reliable witness. So she decides to investigate Megan’s disappearance herself. This takes her into the lives of the people she has watched from the train and into danger. The story enfolds through different timescales and from the points of view of the three women Rachel, Megan and Anna. They all have secrets and give different views of the events. The Girl on the Train is the first novel by Paula Hawkins and contains many twists on the way to the dramatic ending.

Stella Saxby wakes from a coma to find that her parents are dead after a car accident and she is the heir to Saxby Hall. Her only relative is her Aunt Augusta. Her eccentric aunt has gambled all the family money away as she is addicted to tiddlywinks and now she wants Stella to sign Saxby Hall over to her. Aunt Augusta has a scary pet owl called Wagner and she keeps Stella captive while she tries to find the deeds to the house. Stella wants to find out what happened to her parents and she tries to escape only to be captured again by Aunt Augusta and Wagner. There seems to be no way for Stella to escape but while she is locked in the cellar she finds an unlikely friend in the ghost of a little chimney sweep. Now she has a chance to get her own back on Aunt Augusta. With spooky happenings and slapstick adventure Awful Auntie is another fun read for children from David Walliams.

The Summer Reading Challenge 2015 The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all school children aged 4 to 11 and is designed for all reading abilities. The theme for the 2015 Summer Reading Challenge is ‘Record Breakers’, in conjunction with the Guinness Book of Records. Record Breakers will bring together the worlds of fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore some of the astonishing reallife achievements and world records featured in the Guinness World Records Books as part of their Summer Reading Challenge 2015. Just visit the library four times during the holidays and finish two books each time. Collecting stickers as they go, young readers will discover weird, wonderful and wacky records from around the world in six different categories: Cool Tech, Way to Go!, The Big Stuff, Animal Magic, People Power and Action! Adventure! This year we are launching the Summer Reading Challenge with a bang. As part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge we’re attempting to set a new world record for the most number of pledges received for a reading campaign. The record attempt will take place in libraries across the UK and Eire from 10 to 13 July. Join us at Stamford Library on Saturday 11 July 10.30 – 12.30 to make your promise.

Home grown strawberries smell as good as they look!

JULY

in the GARDEN S

o what does July have in store for us? The weather forecasts, as usual, are as vague as ever and this summer will be AVERAGE! If it’s dry then watering will be a primary concern this month and if it’s wet, then we may not have to water but the weeds will be growing like crazy so there will be plenty of weeding to do. Oh yes, and harvesting and enjoying all those delicious crops as they mature.

Of course, we mustn’t forget, that the summer holidays start this month so, weather permitting; get the children out in the garden! With longer days and warmer evenings it’s also time to enjoy entertaining and eating outdoors.

Wimbledon, strawberries and celebrations

Soft fruit i.e. strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, red and blackcurrants are all quite easy to grow and delicious. The birds will think so too, so ‘if you don’t net ‘em you won’t get ‘em’, as a wise man once said.

I mentioned in April’s issue how a mother, reluctant to pay the extortionate price that the supermarket was demanding for strawberries instead bought some strawberry plants. Her daughter is now proud to be able to go out in the garden and pick her own strawberries. A thrill for the child and an investment for mum. So, if the children are short of something to do during the holidays, get them to pick the soft fruit as it ripens. Don’t expect it all to make it to the kitchen though. That’s perhaps a little unfair as I know some adults who would be just as guilty of this, me included!

Lovely Summer Party Bunting (Image courtesy of www.littlestitchesgifts.co.uk)

Plant of the month: Floral Salad There is far too much flowering this month for me to pick just one plant. Instead I thought I’d share a whole plate full. My colourful salad includes various types of leaves, Nasturtium, Calendula, Viola tricolour and Borage flowers. They are all edible and the Borage is a must in summer drinks.

Jobs to do in JULY In the Flower Garden:

A

• Now’s the time to prune Wisteria to contain it and get plenty of flowers next year. Cut all long whippy tendrils back to 15cm (6 inches) unless you need to extend the spread of the plant. In which case tie in to horizontal wires. • Have a good tidy by pruning or cutting down early summer flowering shrubs and perennials.

T S N T

In the Vegetable Garden:

• If ‘Top Fruit’ is still overcrowded after its natural ‘June drop’, thin out apples, pears and plums to give fruit space to ripen and prevent branches from breaking.

Juicy Ripe Courgette

• Harvest fruit and vegetables as soon they ripen to keep the plants producing. • Continue to sow all salad crops and mainstream summer roots.

In the Greenhouse:

• Keep on top of ventilating, watering and feeding and add shading if the weather is really hot. • Pick greenhouse crops as soon as they mature to encourage more fruits.

Pots and Containers:

• If your having a party in the garden then place pots of fragrant plants near to seating areas. • Continue to deadhead regularly to keep pots looking good. • Keep an eye on watering even if it rains, as rain cannot always penetrate the foliage.

Lawn Care:

Say cheers to Summer

If you have a glut you could even get your mini entrepreneurs to sell the surplus to friends and neighbours. Once you’ve picked the last of the strawberries, cut back all the old leaves, remove any straw or mats used to protect them from the dirt, give them a good feed and a good soaking. They will look terrible but you will be doing them a great favour. They will soon perk up and put on new leaves and you will be rewarded with an abundance of fruit next year. My favourites are Cambridge Favourite and Hapil. You can easily create new plants from runners. Peg runners down to the ground or to pots of compost. Once rooted, which won’t take long, you can detach the young plant from the parent. It is worth replacing strawberry plants every

3-4 years as they become unproductive. So pop a flower in a jug and say cheers to Summer! Till next month...

Happy gardening!

M: 07870 603953 E: debbie@creativegardendesign.co.uk www.creativegardendesign.co.uk

• Continue to mow the lawn but set the blades a little higher in hot, dry weather to keep it green. • Every time you cut the lawn, trim the edges. It’ll make the borders look tidy even if they aren’t.

Looking after the Wildlife:

• Keep feeding the birds and providing them with fresh water.

A welcome visitor

• Keep the pond topped up with water and clear overcrowded waterweeds. JULY 15 CONCEPT MAGAZINE / 29

WISH LIST

STUNNING

by Devonports Kitchens Practical spaces for eating, relaxing and living together For anyone looking to redesign their kitchen, practicality is key. You need a kitchen which works around you and a kitchen company who will listen to your needs. This is where family-run business Devonports come in, Sarah and Steve Devonport take every aspect of your current space and life into account in order to meet your needs. A functional kitchen doesn’t mean that you have to compromise on style. This picture shows stunning shaker style cabinets, finished

off with beautiful granite worktops in complementary colours to add a high end feel. Plinths pick out the cabinet colour and the use of matching upstands around the top of the worktops adds a more contemporary look and negates the need for tiles. The space is practical with cooking, eating and relaxing areas flowing with ease. METALIC MOSAICS

M

etal mosaics reflect lifestyle as much as colour, and should be used with confidence. The clean bold lines and shapes of these metals - available in both polished and softly brushed finishes - enhance and complement stone, wood, glass, ceramic or brick surfaces.

Metal Polished & Brushed An expanse of metal mosaics on your kitchen wall certainly bring out the professional chef in you. As well as being contemporary in style, metal can also be a practical solution in many different locations. The polished surfaces boldly mirror light and colour, and brushed satin finishes soften reflections and are very much at home with natural materials such as wood and stone.

Aluminium These ultra modern mosaics look stylish in contemporary settings, whether residential or commercial. Aluminium tiles have a subtle gold-like sheen. You can create a three-dimensional effect that is sensational.

Add colour across your

WHOLE GARDEN B

e as bright and colourful as you want with a range of colours to suit any garden style. With 24 colours to choose from you will have no trouble finding the one perfect for livening up any surface from wood, brick and terracotta to stone and metal.

GARDEN PAINT Preparation: Let’s start with wood, if you’re going to paint your garden furniture make sure you give it a quick sand before you start and wipe it down with white spirit. If you’re painting your shed or fence just use a stiff brush to get rid of any dirt. On metal make sure you wipe it down with white spirit and use a suitable metal primer, this will make sure you get the best finish and your paint will last longer. For brick, terracotta or stone remove any dust or loose material with a stiff brush and give it a good wipe. Then you’re good to go!

Application: Make sure you give it a good stir before you start. Try the colour out first on a hidden area to make sure you are happy with it. If you’re painting onto wood you’ll need to brush in the direction of the wood grain. Three coats will give you the best colour and protection, make sure you sand down between the second and third coat if you’re painting a smooth surface. Leave 4 hours between each coat. And there you have it, job done!

GET BEACH BODY READY

O

n the run up to your holiday you might want to take action on any problem areas, or address any maintenance you might need to get your body beach ready. DETOX: We don’t mean you to starve yourself but a little detox the week before you jet off can make you feel better about yourself, inside and out. If you take a bath, add a couple of handfuls of Epsom salts every evening. This will help eliminate toxins and de-bloat for a flatter stomach. Also, drinking hot lemon water every morning will get your digestion on track if you’re feeling sluggish. WAX: Should you need to tend to any hairy business before your beach break we suggest you do this a few days before, leaving enough time for skin to settle down as waxing can often make it sensitive for 24 hours. TAN: If you can’t face the beach completely ‘au-naturel’ then how about giving yourself a head start on your holiday tan? A buildable self-tan is your secret weapon to give just enough colour and coverage to dare to strip off to achieve a natural tan. A Decleor BB cream with a hint of colour can be used ahead of your holiday and if you stop using it while you’re away it will gradually fade as your natural tan comes along nicely on the beach. The same effect can be achieved a few days before with a spray tan, which will give you an all over tan and a head start.

Staying Safe

In The Sun by Fiona Hood

Renaissance Health & Beauty

S

ummer is with us again and this is the time of year when we are thinking of jetting off somewhere lovely to enjoy time with our loved ones in the sunshine. However a British Association of Dermatologists survey finds that us Brits are failing to take Skin Cancer precautions. The survey showed that 72% of people had been sunburnt during the last year and sunburn more than doubles the risk of developing melanoma which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. This is a reflection of poor sun protection habits. People underestimate the damage

Concept_July 15_26-51.indd 43

that sunburn can do to their skin and think that skin reddening is just a harmless part of the tanning process rather than a sign or irreparable damage to your skin. Most of us Brits fail to check their skin for skin cancer and a lot think that they only need protection when they are abroad. How many of us have been caught out at a Sunday afternoon barbecue when we forgot our SPF or didn’t think we needed it? There is a huge amount of choice now of SPF available and should be used plentifully

and applied frequently especially after sport or swimming. Wear a hat to protect your face, sit in the shade, avoid the midday sun and very importantly don’t forget to rehydrate with good moisturisers and plenty of water to drink. Most importantly of all, check your skin regularly or get someone else to check areas you can’t see and if you notice any changes in moles or areas of skin, get checked out by your GP. Better safe than sorry.

The wonder of

LEMONS I f you only buy lemons to put in your gin and tonic or squeeze over your fish you are missing out on some real health benefits that will leave you glowing with vitality. Lemon is rich in fruit acids and its all natural beautifying properties have been relied upon by many throughout the ages. The Egyptians, the Greeks, Romans and the people of Asia enjoyed the benefits of the lemon long before we had recognised their value. A glass of hot water and lemon first thing in the morning will help to cleanse your system and increase your metabolism. The healing power of lemons work by supplying urgently required vitamin C to your defense cells. Here are just some of the benefits of lemons: • • • • •

give bounce and shine to hair smooth your feet gently remove dead skin cells make your skin look fresher and younger invigorate your spirit

You can make your own formulas or indulge yourself with wonderful products crafted by professionals. When mixing or creating homemade formulas consider possible allergies, sensitivities, or other reactions. It is highly recommended to use only freshly squeezed juice and not the bottled juice that contains anti-oxidizing chemicals that are harmful to the skin. Be careful not to leave neat lemon on the skin for extended periods of time. Lemon balm can have a calming effect and therefore may be able to help remove fatigue, exhaustion, dizziness, anxiety, nervousness, and tension. It is also believed that inhaling lemon oil helps in increasing concentration and alertness. If you’re feeling tense sprinkle a few drops of lemon balm essential oil on a handkerchief to inhale There is no need to throw lemons away. Frozen lemons are delicious grated straight from the freezer over salads in the summer, or quarter a lemon and pop it in a kettle of boiling water overnight to clean it and remove limescale.

HAIR CARE

A

s much as we love summer, it can be tough on our hair. Here are some top tips for happy, healthy summer hair.

Treat yourself to a summer hair cut. The sun can cause a lot of damage to your hair. Making sure that all of your dead ends have been cut off will reduce frizz and leave your hair looking much healthier. Wash your hair less often (yes, really). Frequent washing strips your scalp of its natural oils, which it really needs at this time of year. Use a natural dry shampoo to help you go a bit longer between washes. Give your hair a break from hairdryers, straighteners and curling irons. Go natural or use a nozzle with your hairdryer (this acts as a barrier between your hair and the direct heat of the dryer). Lower heat settings, and a heat defence spray will also help to protect your hair. Fight the frizz that summer brings with a smoothing serum, which will act as a barrier against moisture in the air. Protect your hair from the sun’s harmful UV rays, there are many hair products which include sun protection. The summer sun and heat can be unforgiving to your hair, drying it out. Treat it to a deep conditioning mask once a week to restore moisture. There is some incredibly stylish headwear available this year. Look fabulous and protect your hair and scalp at the same time with a hat. If swimming, in a pool or the sea, rinse your hair out with fresh water after, as both chlorine and salt will dry your hair out. Change your hair care products for the summer, choose moisturising shampoos and conditioners to aid dry summer hair. Learn to braid! A messy braid is perfect for summer, it will keep your hair under control while not causing too much damage, and minimising your hair’s exposure to the sun. Jet Set PETS W

hen packing for that holiday in the sun, pet owners have historically had to deal with those sorrowful eyes as furry family members realise their humans are planning to abandon them. For animals who had to travel back to Britain the process was even more upsetting, involving heart-breaking months of quarantine, separation and a great deal of expense. With the PETS passport scheme however, the family dog, cat or ferret can now become an international pet of mystery with very little fuss. Leaving the UK with your pet is easy and requires little documentation. However, on re-entry, whilst the scheme is fairly straight forward, its requirements are more stringent and unbending. In order to make sure your pet is not stopped at UK border control it is vital to make sure you have met all the criteria and, critically, done so in the correct order. Have your pet microchipped All documentation will relate to your pet’s microchip, therefore it is logical that this is the key step in the process. If your pet has an existing chip that is no longer working, cannot be located (they do occasionally wander around the body) or only reads occasionally, a new chip will have to be fitted BEFORE vaccinations take place. By April 2016 all dogs will need to be microchipped by law in the UK.

Have your pet vaccinated against rabies Your pet will need to be at least 12 weeks old before they can be vaccinated. Depending on the manufacturer’s information, the vaccination may need to be given in more than one injection and you must wait at least 21 days from the date of the last vaccination. Some animals don’t respond adequately so will need to be revaccinated which will delay the process. It is important to note that the date of the last vaccination counts as day 0 so you should not travel until day 22. If you are planning on re-entering the UK from an unlisted EU or approved country

with an EU pet passport your pet will require a blood test and a 30 day wait to ensure the vaccination is successful. Planning ahead and not leaving things until the last minute is very much advised for these vacinations. Any issues that arise such as revaccinations must be allowed for in your timescale so you don’t risk missing the start of your holiday or having to adjust your travel plans.

Dogs need to be treated against tapeworm No less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (1 to 5 days) before your return to the UK, your dog must be treated by a vet against tapeworm. This is to prevent reintroduction of the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. It is not native to the UK and can be fatal if passed to humans, therefore the ‘holiday vet’ must use an approved medicine whose active ingredient is Praziquantel, or an equivalent product. All treatment must be clearly recorded in the EU pet passport. Things that bite In some countries there are additional health concerns for our pets. Sandflies, ticks and fleas can sometimes carry pathogens we do not encounter at home or are unaffected by a normal flea/worming regime. It is worth checking with your vet to check if they recommend any additional anti parasite protection for your chosen destination. Travel insurance You may have your pet insured to within an inch of his or her life, but does cover extend

to potential jet setting activities? It is worth checking your policy documents or calling your insurer to make sure your furry friend will still be protected.

Travel in style Pets can only travel on approved carriers. Most normal transport routes are covered, however if you are in any doubt check with the carrier or a full list is available on www.gov.uk under Pet Travel – Information for pet owners. If you are planning on arriving back in the UK on your private jet or yacht, then, unfortunately, your pet will have to slum it on public transport. If you have 6 dogs, cats or ferrets, sadly, one of them will have to stay at home unless you have proof you are attending a show. You are generally required to travel with your pet, however, if for some reason that is not possible, your pet’s travel must be within 5 days of your own. Under no circumstances can your pet go on holiday on their own at present. Your Vet will be happy to give more advice, you can also go online and check www. gov.uk/take-pet-abroad to obtain the most up to date information. Have a great trip.

Go Go Go Intensive is based in Peterborough and offers learner drivers a fast and cost-effective way to pass both the driving theory test and practical driving test for a standard fee of ÂŁ795. According to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) the average driver needs 45 professional lessons and a further 20 lessons from family members, friends or a professional instructor. The average cost for professional tuition is ÂŁ20 - ÂŁ22 per hour which means that the average learner driver is paying up to ÂŁ1200 to pass their practical driving test. While there is nothing wrong with weekly lessons it could take up to 60 weeks for a student to pass their driving test. Go Go Go Intensive offers a structured course syllabus at its training centre and removes the kerbside instruction into a classroom environment. The benefit to this is that all the time spent in the car is spent on driving with little or no kerbside instruction. The syllabus was developed by a Defensive Driving Examiner and is based on the Military and Police system, which is recognised as the most efficient and cost effective way of obtaining a driving licence. This is because there are no gaps in learning, where a student can forget what they did during a lesson a week before. The courses run Monday to Friday and start at 9.00am. The first hour is spent in the classroom with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) who starts training and preparing students for their theory test. Students are collected by their driving Instructor at 10.00am where they have a two hour intensive driving lesson, a rest break for half an hour, followed by a further two hour intensive driving lesson. Students return to the classroom at 2.30pm for further training and the course finishes at 5.00pm each day. At the start of the week the classroom training focuses on getting students to pass their theory and hazard perception tests, which are pre-booked to be taken on the Thursday or Friday of the week. By the middle of the week the classroom training focuses on all the elements that are normally taught at the kerbside during weekly lessons. By the end of the week students should have passed their theory test and will have covered all aspects of normal driving. If the Instructor has signed off the student as test ready then they can book a short notice test where Go Go Go Intensive can dramatically reduce the practical test waiting time. The company is so confident with its teaching methods that should a student fail the theory test, or practical driving test if they have been signed off as test ready, then any corrective lessons required will be provided free of charge until a test pass is achieved. The company also has unique links with the Institute of Advanced Motorists and gives free affiliate membership, for 12 months, to all students who pass their driving test. The Institute teaches the Police system called “Roadcraftâ€? and when applied you cannot have a collision that is your fault. Given the Governments statistic that one in five new drivers crash within 6 months of passing their driving test the system is an invaluable tool and dramatically reduces insurance premiums.

Finishing touches

before opening of the new

Thorpe Hall Hospice T he countdown is on to the completion of the brand new Thorpe Hall Hospice building. The contractors are now putting the finishing touches to the single-storey building which represents the future of palliative care for the region.

The sedum roof is turning green as the lowgrowing plants shoot in the spring sunshine; the gardens are being landscaped and the rooms are being decorated. The completion of the new 20 bed inpatient unit is the final phase in a £6 million project to provide the region with a state-of-the-art hospice able to provide incredible care for generations to come. Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough, first opened 24 years ago in a 17th century mansion house. Staff have been forced to work around the limitations of the grade 1 listed building ever since. Now it is just weeks before patients are welcomed into a purpose-designed building where the environment will match the care. The move will mark an end to shared bedrooms and bathrooms, wobbly floors, limited garden access, winding staircases and out of date fittings. Instead patients will be cared for in private rooms with en suites, direct access to new courtyard gardens – even when they can’t get out of bed, and modern communications including wifi and Skype so they can keep in touch with family and friends. The medical team at Thorpe Hall was involved in designing the building and are looking forward to working in the new space. Allison Mann is the head of clinical services. She said: “A lot of thought has gone into the new building to make sure it feels like a home from home for patients but also so that it allows us as a team to work as efficiently as possible. For instance, in each room there will be a locked medication cupboard so a patients’ medication is immediately available.

That means we can administer medication as its needed without having to go up and down stairs as we currently do. That, in turn, gives us more time to spend caring for our patients and their families.” Alongside the opening of the new building, Thorpe Hall Hospice is offering new services so even more people within the community can benefit from the hospice’s care. A befriending service is now underway – a ‘good neighbour’ service for those who may be facing a difficult time. And a hospice at home service is set to launch later this year giving people who choose to stay at home through their illness access to expert palliative care. The family support team is also extending its work providing specialist children’s bereavement support to families who don’t necessarily have a connection to Thorpe Hall.

The finishing touches are being put to the new hospice building at Thorpe Hall Hospice
