The Guilisasti Family received the Entrepreneur Family ESE 2012 award, given by the University of Los Andes School of Business together with La Tercera newspaper and Credit Suisse.
The Guilisasti family in Concha y Toro
The Guilisasti family was distinguished with this award for its leadership as the main shareholder of Concha y Toro, wholly fulfilling a wide set of criteria: good financial performance; a leading position in markets; at least a second generation continuing in the ownership or management of the business; a family respected by the local business community, for their success in business as much as for their guiding principles and values; and for having established and maintained an effective corporate governance.
In 1957, Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle joined Concha y Toro Board of Directors. From then on the winery began a period of strong growth and development of export markets, undergoing a modernization process that laid the groundwork for the company’s later expansion and leading position as a producer of high quality wines.
This year, a jury composed by renowned entrepreneurs, business and academic leaders, unanimously decided to award this prize to the Guilisasti family for their outstanding great business career in Chile. The family is principally linked to the wine business Concha y Toro and Emiliana wineries, although it is also has a business in the fruit industry through its company Greenvic. The family has strong interest in social responsibility issues and promoting education through the Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle Foundation. Emiliana, an organic winery, is firmly committed to the community with its sustainable and organic agricultural practices. The awards ceremony, held on August 28, 2012, was attended by the entire Guilisasti family, University of Los Andes authorities and well-known Chilean businessmen and executives.
In 1998 Eduardo Guilisasti Gana, named CEO of Concha y Toro, continued with the work philosophy that inspired his father marking the beginning of another period of strong growth and the company’s globalization. In order to manifest the spirit driving Don Eduardo and his closeness to the company’s workers, the Guilisasti family created the Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle Foundation whose goal is to give full education grants to children of Concha y Toro employees.

As one of the judges of the award stated, “Mr. Guilisasti has managed the company during a period of incredible growth, showing great leadership in the wine industry and maintaining a globally recognized standard of quality”.
Concha y Toro receives the “Free Trade Award”
At a breakfast chaired by the Chilean Economy Minister Pablo Longueira, the Chilean-American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) presented the “Free Trade Award” to Concha y Toro winery. The 7th version of this award highlighted the company’s work in the areas of free trade promotion and free enterprise between Chile and the United States, focusing on good practices. “One feels very proud to be Chilean when you travel and everywhere you go you see bottles of Chilean wine and Concha y Toro known as a world-class brand. The most important thing however, is that this company has a strong sense of Corporate Social Responsibility and excellent ties to the community to which it belongs”, said the Minister.
Great leap forward in Chile’s “Most Respected Businesses” ranking
Concha y Toro has achieved a meteoric rise to number 4 in the “Most Respected Businesses” ranking produced annually by La Segunda newspaper and Adimark GfK. The company was surprised by this progress, as in 2004 it was not even mentioned in the list. In 2005 Concha y Toro was ranked number 46, last year it advanced to number 8 and in 2012 four more places to number 4. Concha y Toro has thus become the first winery to achieve this excellent position, with outstanding performance in globalization, probity and transparency and consumer demand satisfaction. This ranking is published by one of the most important studies available in Chile and is considered one of the most prestigious indicators of corporate reputation.

Excellent score for a unique Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor, Concha y Toro’s icon Cabernet Sauvignon –headed by winemaker Enrique Tirado– confirms once again its outstanding quality with a 94-point score in prestigious US specialized magazine Wine Spectator. The most recent edition of US magazine Wine Spectator awarded 94 points to Don Melchor 2008, as well as selecting it a “Daily Wine Pick”. Don Melchor is the first world-class Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile and the only wine with 25 vintages to its name, all of which have been widely praised by international wine critics. The 2008 vintage is a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, both originating in the Puente Alto vineyard. This award confirms Don Melchor as the foremost exponent of Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Puente Alto terroir as one of the best to produce this flagship variety in Chile. Enrique Tirado, the winemaker in charge of this wine states, “Don Melchor’s character and consistency reflects the careful and meticulous work put into both the vineyard and cellar. No step of this complex process can be overlooked; this is the only way the Puente Alto fruit can express its full potential”.

Don Melchor 1999 among the world’s best Cabernet wines Don Melchor once again highlights the quality of Chilean winemaking, as it was ranked the best wine in a blind tasting attended by expert wine critics, including a representative of renowned US Wine Spectator magazine. The tasting was held in Solera, a Spanish restaurant located in downtown Manhattan, and included seven great 1999 vintage red wines from several parts of the world. The wines were blind tasted and paired with dishes from the restaurant. Some of the critics were Pablo Alvarez, in charge of Spanish winery Vega Sicilia; Jean-Louis Carbonnier, representative of Château Palmer in Bordeaux and Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator Senior Editor. Don Melchor turned out to be the tasters’ favorite wine, and especially so for Thomas Matthews who rated it with 95 points. “My first choice was Don Melchor 1999, a top-of-the-line Cabernet bottled by Chilean leading winery Concha y Toro. It is a delicious, adventurous wine, with plenty of fruit to balance out its cedar and tar notes. It still has a lot of life left,” says the Wine Spectator editor who also points out, “Chile has earned its place in the wine world”.

To expand distribution of this super premium wine line to new markets and sales channels has been the main goal for 2012. The Concha y Toro team behind Gran Reserva Serie Riberas has been very successful. Since its release in 2009 in Chile, Brazil and South Korea, Gran Reserva Serie Riberas has arrived in several markets, however, 2012 has been the year of greatest expansion for the brand. An active plan focused on expanding brand distribution to new markets and sales channels has meant these wines have reached countries such as the United States, Aruba, Belgium, Malta, Nicaragua, Spain and Thailand and achieved a remarkable increase in sales. To do this, says Carla Errázuriz, Marketing Manager Origin Wines, “We have carried out many activities, including product launchings, client and press tastings, written media ad campaigns. In addition, on certain important dates we strengthen our point-of-sale presence”. Introducing this wine range in the United States has led to a noticeable increase in demand: “Today you can find all varieties of Gran Reserva Serie Riberas in the US (except for the Syrah). They have been very well received by consumers”. Carla Errázuriz explains the idea is to continue extending this brand’s global reach: “At Concha y Toro we are convinced that with this wine line we can carry out any number of activities, as we trust the quality delivered to our clients and consumers”. Gran Reserva Serie Riberas is a special selection of wines originating from vineyards planted on the slopes and terraces of riverbanks. These vineyards benefit from the effects of river water flows which shape the land and bring down temperatures. Grapes planted in these lands ripen slowly and produce wines with greater concentration and freshness.

Marcelo Papa presents the new Marques de Casa Concha varieties
The head Marques de Casa Concha winemaker reveals the characteristics of the two new super premium wines, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, recently launched in Chile. July 26, 2012 was a special day for Marques de Casa Concha. In the exclusive Club de la Union of Santiago and with the presence of the press, sommeliers, restaurant owners and brand representatives, the new Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc varieties of this super premium line were launched. The event consisted of a seven-course food & wine dinner, created by renowned Chilean Chef Guillermo Rodriguez, while the tasting of the seven Marques de Casa Concha wine varieties was led by their winemaker, Marcelo Papa.
The wines, according to the winemaker The Pinot Noir of this line –in fact, the first Limarí Valley Pinot Noir in Concha y Toro's portfolio– was born of the winemaker’s interest in incorporating this variety to the Marques de Casa Concha range. “I had been looking for a long time for a Pinot Noir for Marques, until we came to the Limarí Valley. I began researching this valley because of Chardonnay, which grows very well there, so I thought it might be the same case for the Pinot as they are very similar varieties”, says Marcelo Papa.
Marcelo Papa, Marques de Casa Concha winemaker, and Chef Guillermo Rodríguez, at the new varieties’ launching.
“The Marques de Casa Concha Sauvignon Blanc is fresher than others, as it comes from a valley that receives the cooling influence of the sea and early morning mists”, says the winemaker. According to Marcelo Papa, his greatest achievement in the case of these two wines was to imprint a strong sense of origin. For this, the selection of the vineyard was essential: “The Limarí-style Pinot Noir identifies me. There aren’t many Pinot Noir from this valley, which have proven to have unique characteristics, elegance and quality not found in other places”.
The Pinot Noir is made from grapes grown in the San Julián vineyard, located 30 km from the Pacific Ocean on the south bank of the Limarí River. “The Limarí Valley has very good conditions for producing Pinot Noir in the Burgundy style, that is, with cold maceration, in open tanks and without pumps, and pumpovers with manual cap submersion. It is more traditional winemaking than that used for other wines”, says. On the other hand, the Sauvignon Blanc is a wine made with grapes grown in the Leyda Valley, located 14 km from the Pacific Ocean.

One of the most novel brand implementations was its publicity campaign in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hangzhou in May and September 2012. The launching in Merida was held in the Yucatan Country Club and attended by wine writers, journalists, opinion leaders, customers, restaurant owners and sommeliers.
These restaurants’ menus consisted of a five-course food & wine dinner, whose author, chef and sommelier Anti Lepik, made sure food and wine were paired to perfection. Interbrands, in charge of distributing our wines in the Nordic countries’ travel retail channel, is responsible for this alliance, an excellent opportunity to promote Concha y Toro brand in these distant markets.
In Cancun, the event was held at The Ritz-Carlton and was attended by sommeliers, distinguished guests, restaurant managers, and managers of A & B hotels in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. In both occasions the wines tasted were the Chardonnay, Merlot, Malbec and Syrah varieties of this wine range.
