The Duke of Windsor was the first person to sign the guest book, and was rapidly followed by an extensive list of celebrities. This is where Richard Burton proposed to Elizabeth Taylor. Another guest hired a helicopter from which 500 roses were scattered as he proposed to his partner. Humphrey Bogart might have proposed to Lauren Bacall at table 11 at 21 Club in New York, but it was at Hotel Splendido that they ate their romantic dinners, and it is here that both Madonna and Bill Gates have eaten in more recent times. If you look up the word “enchanting” in a dictionary there’s a good chance you’ll find a picture of Portofino, because this picturesque fishing village on the part of the Italian Riviera known as Riviera di Levante is, quite simply, enchanting. As you slowly travel to Portofino along the narrow winding roads, preferably in a Fiat 500, the area’s beauty is stunning. The small villages, practically dipping their toes in the sea, are so fantastically beautiful that it looks like a Hollywood set – you almost expect a director to step out

and shout “Cameras A and B, ready!”. On warm evenings it is magical to sit at a table in La Terrazza, with its fantastic views of the bay, perhaps with a Bloody Mary in a heavy-bottomed glass, watching darkness fall. Inside, from the piano bar, you can just hear how the guests’ favourite, Vladi Gatto, caresses the notes of “Moon River” as the waiters light candles on the tables. Wonderful aromas spread through the air. This is the place to show off your Milan-bought Valentino sheath dress. Of course, you must try the green pesto, which has its roots in this area. Order home-made pasta with pesto and enjoy as the waiter stylishly sprinkles parmesan cheese on your food. And yes, you can arrive by helicopter, it’s a 20-minute flight from Pisa airport. The hotel is surrounded by a verdant national park, where the greenery and colourful flowers surround the glimmering pink building in a way that lets romance flow. There is no better place on this earth to take your beloved if you want love to bloom. The scents, sights and feelings are in full flower in this amazing place. Here, you don’t just check in at a luxury hotel, you check in to a lifestyle; one that is very attractive and which makes its mark, for better or worse. The experience of the splendour and beauty that is a natural part of life here means that life after checking out feels considerably more grey and boring. But why worry about

that, when you are at the heart of all the wonderful things that a stay at the Cipriani has to offer? Seeing the backdrop of Venice in the sunset, across the lagoon with its innumerable gondolas that are now barely visible, swaying and bobbing entrancingly around St Mark’s Square – it can give you the shivers, but only those of wonder and wellbeing. Nor is the hotel in the city itself, but on the island of Giudecca (a fiveminute boat ride from St Mark’s Square). The hotel’s boats,

naturally from Riva, traffic the route around the clock. Yet Cipriani is as great a symbol of Venice as the world-famous Rialto Bridge. This may be because Giuseppe Cipriani is the same man who opened Harry’s Bar, one of the world’s most famous watering holes, in 1931. Cipriani was a versatile man; he also created the Bellini cocktail. Every day, tourists flock to Harry’s Bar to imbibe the delicacy that is one of the two most legendary thirst-quenchers in the uu

universe, along with Hotel Raffles’ Singapore Sling, made from white peaches and sparkling Italian wine. Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Noel Coward and Gertrud Stein all contributed to making Harry’s Bar so widely known. Cipriani took the name of the Bellini from the 15th century artist Giovanni Bellini, who had painted a picture the same colour as the drink. Carpaccio was also invented at Harry’s Bar in 1950, and was also named after an artist and a colouring. Venice’s best Bellini is now made at Hotel Cipriani. Guests lounge alongside the Olympic size pool during the day, equipped with sunglasses and Fendi baguette bags.

There is one employee per guest, which says a great deal about the Cipriani’s class. Hotel Cipriani has a number of restaurants: Cipriani, Fortuny Terrace, Gabbiano and Cip’s Club. You really shouldn’t leave the Cipriani without having tried the risotto with scampi. The relatively new spa is another, highly recommended, element of the hotel’s almost supernatural sense of wellbeing. he combination of pure, extremely highquality scents and handmade packaging laid the foundation for the success of Acqua di Parma, as well as a glamorous history that starts with a small perfume maker in Parma, in northern Italy. 1916 saw the launch of a men’s fragrance, Acqua di Parma Colonia, which revolutionised a market on which most scents at that time were strong and complex. Acqua di Parma’s fragrance was light and citrus toned. In the 1930s, the brand was synonymous with Hollywood glamour, as it became known that its customers included film stars like Cary Grant and David Niven. But even female sex symbols like Ava Gardner and Lana Turner started to use the men’s fragrance, making Acqua di Parma Colonia the first unisex scent in the prestige segment. Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn and Sharon Stone are other famous wearers.

In 1998, the first Acqua di Parma store opened on the Via del Gesù in Milan, next to stores run by the major international fashion houses. Distribution has expanded recently, but it is still very exclusive with a few selected retailers in major cities. In 2001, LVHM, perhaps the world’s leading group in the luxury market, bought into the company, becoming the 100% stockholder two years later. Since then, several new fragrances have been launched, including Iris Nobile, a floral perfume for women (the company’s first), as well as a very successful series of scented candles for the home. The Blu Mediterraneo Acqua di Parma Spa has just opened on Sardinia’s Emerald Coast. For the uninitiated, the Emerald Coast could be described as the Italian cousin of the French Riviera. It has the same accumulation of luxury yachts and wealthy clientele. Porto Cervo is the most luxurious resort on the coast. It is the location of Cala di Volpe, home to one of the world’s uu

The building was destroyed during World War Two, but was restored and reopened in 1946. Extensive renovations were carried out in 2002–2004, which entailed an enormous technical boost for the opera. For example, the uninitiated operagoer might find the text machines built into the chair backs useful, as they allow the story to be followed in three languages. The 2008 season offered works such as Faust, Romeo and Juliette, Barber of Seville and Carmen. he brand is even more exclusive, because the term “pleasure boat” was first used about a Riva. It was during the early 1900s that Riva started producing pleasure craft rather than racing boats. Then as now, luxury was a necessity, so these boats were rapidly designated pleasure boats – and Riva has been world leading in the segment ever since. But let’s return to the glamorous sixties a moment. This was when the absolute classic Riva model was launched, Aquarama; as Riva was already a name that was associated with flair and luxury, the list of celebrities who wanted their very own pleasure boat grew rapidly. Brigitte Bardot, Richard Burton, Peter Sellers and King Hussein are just a few of the famous names who quickly ensured that they owned an Aquarama. Thus far the Riva boatyard had only built classic wooden boats but, by the end of the 1960s, almost all boat makers had moved to the new, stronger, lighter and considerably more durable fibreglass. But this was nothing for Riva’s owner, Carlo Riva. Instead it developed its own method, in which mahogany was laminated, thus becoming considerably stronger than the plywood that was previously used. This new method meant that Riva could maintain, or even improve, the status it enjoyed as a maker of wooden

boats. In the 1970s and 1980s, Riva continued to regularly launch contemporary classics, such as the Superamerica and Corsaro. In order to defend its leading position, in the early 1990s Riva looked for partners and the Vicker Group, which also owns Rolls Royce, was quick to show interest. Together they launched several models, of which the 80 Opera was the most successful. After this, Riva’s reputation declined slightly, but when the company was bought by the Ferretti Group in 2001 and 33 Aquariva came onto the market, Riva once again assumed its rightful position at the top. For those who love nostalgia, Rivarama has assumed the role of heir to the legendary Aquarama and, with the elegant and gracious lines it inherited from its predecessor, it won’t disappoint any observers. The twelve models that Riva now offers cover a broad range, with everything from smaller racer-type boats to enormous pleasure boats which have all imaginable luxuries and the latest hi-tech equipment. The autumn 2008 saw the launch of the 92 Duchessa, the successor to the popular 115 Athena. And, just recently, the 86 Domino joined the Riva family. oices from all the corners of the world can be heard from the tables at the small cafes and tapas bars. Madrid’s streets are thronged with people. There is a fantastic, vibrant atmosphere wherever you go. Five million people live in Madrid, but it feels as if you have ended up in a place that is a combination of Paris and a small town. There is food and lively discussion, but for some reason it seems as if the residents of Madrid have a strange sense of time. Lunch at 2:30 in the afternoon, dinner at 9:30 and bed a good while after midnight. A good dinner idea is to eat at the market in central Madrid that is called El Mercado de San Miguel. It is a recently renovated stables, with glass and iron girders as architectural elements. It is said that removing the horses and renovating the building cost EUR 20 million. Madrid’s gourmands flock here and will stay until late at

night. One of the inns, La Casa de Bacalao, offers fantastic cod served as a tapas, marinated in olive oil and dill and beautifully presented on fresh baguettes. Its “stablemate” serves cheese from every corner of the globe and a good range of Spanish wines. A little way away, the oyster bar has fresh French oysters. White wine or champagne is a matter of taste. It’s easy to linger here for far too long. El Bulli in Madrid is regarded as one of the world’s best restaurants. For most of us mere mortals it is in principle impossible to get a table. If you would like to visit a restaurant that serves up its food and flavours in an experimental and innovative manner, you should book a table at La Terazza del Casino, which has one star in the Michelin Guide. The restaurant manager has worked together with Ferran Adrià at El Bulli and maintains high standards. The

restaurant is situated in an old palace in central Madrid and its décor and architecture are absolutely fantastic. The tasting menu has 20 dishes and is an experience you’ll never forget. Some of the food is served in tubes and contains amazing flavours, and the menu also has dishes called “morphings”. That alone really tickles the taste buds. No one yet knows what is in them, but it is incredibly delicious. There are seven waiters constantly around the table and a level of service that makes any ordinary restaurant seem like a hot dog stand. Central Madrid is made for walking in and there are many things to see. The Prado Museum houses more artwork than you’ll have time for in one week and should definitely been visited. Retiro Park is just a stone’s throw away, a gigantic green lung where the residents of Madrid get their fair share of football, running or just relaxing. If you only have time to visit one museum during your stay, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is a must. The museum’s art was donated by the family of the same name and exhibits artists including Picasso, Rubens and others from the world’s greats. As a bonus, Madrid also has an Egyptian

temple if you’ve never been to Egypt. This was a gift that was shipped from Egypt to Spain, stone by stone. One must-see, if you are in Madrid at the right season, is bullfighting. The national arena, Plaza de Toros, brings together the people of Madrid every weekend during the season. It is a thrilling show, full of adrenaline, pride and courage. Melias Hotel, ME Madrid, which was designed by Keith Hobbs, is the place to stay. The hotel is conversion of a local venue at which the matadors hung out in the evenings, and is now a hypermodern design hotel. The matadors have left their calling cards in the form of four stuffed bulls’ heads that hang in the hotel’s lobby. All the staff communicate with each other via earpieces, creating the impression that Agent 007 will step through the door at any moment. There is an enormous roof terrace, with a restaurant and bar – and the views across Madrid are for free. Madrid has a whole tapas-smorgasbord of thrilling activities to offer visitors. he massive wooden gate is slowly being opened before us. The music on the other side of the wall becomes more intense. Our eyes are slowly adapting after having been blinded by the sparkling camp fire and Aman-i-Khas emerges in front of us in its full splendour. Without undue delay each of us is given an ice-cold towel to shake off the dust from the journey and a perfectly blended gin and tonic, which is just as refreshing. Even though the music moves towards its crescendo and the song, accompanied by drums, flutes and sitars is incredibly beautiful, we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but ask our private butler to escort us to our tent. Finally, the time for this long-awaited moment has come. Carefully chiselled stone-paved passages lit by burning torches guide us down to our new, but unfortunately only temporary, home. called here, pulls open the tent door by a sweep and then invites us in with a similar gesture, there is a moment of devotional silence. The first impression by far exceeds our highest expectations. The place and the ample space surprise us: the distance between the floor and the ceiling in the middle of the tent is almost four metres and under the highest point we find a comfortable fair-sized bed. The other rooms begin here and each is facing one of the four corners of the world. The bathroom section points east and is equipped with a rainfall shower; there is also a light marble bath for two and a water closet separated by thick white draperies. To the west we find a spacious walk-in closet with a washbasin at each end. Straight ahead to the north is the bedroom which can be fully shut off from the rest of the tent by six-metre wide draperies. The king-size bed covered by the finest double duvet cover is flanked by two desks and at the foot of the bed there is a mini bar in the form of a suitcase. In the south, just as you enter the tent, are the dining-room and the reading corner. All the furniture is in old colonial style and great efforts have been made to inspire a sense of late Victorianism from the beginning of the last century. There are two verandas outdoors, one for pleasant sun chair sessions and the other â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a dining place in the shade for those who prefer a secluded meal outdoors.

We are looking forward to tomorrowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safari and it is not long before we fall asleep to the sound of chirping birds with big smiles on our faces. Thoroughly rested we wake up as our breakfast is being served on the veranda. Just in case, we have ordered a wakeup call but since there is no phone in the tent, the butler tried to win our attention by calling us from the other side of the tent near the entrance. The heat hits us as we leave the air-conditioned tent and step out in the scorching sun. For the first time now, in broad daylight, we realise that we are in the middle of the wilderness. Suddenly the bushes behind us rustle and we shiver to a sound that can only be caused by a very big animal. Nervous we turn around and we see a smiling man who bows in greeting. He is just one of the watchmen who constantly circulate the area. He is equipped with a big wooden cane to keep any wild animals that have left the reserve, away from the camp. After a very nice breakfast consisting of chai tea, toast and a big plate of fresh local fruit with many new acquaintances, which we had never encountered before, we are standing in front of the 4x4 jeep waiting for us outside the reception. uu

Equipped with sun hats and well-oiled with SPF 25 we enter the national park full of hope to catch a glimpse of the world-famous Indian tiger, well-known from the Jungle book. We are sitting high in the backseat of the jeep and have perfect view in all directions. The driver knows all dirty roads down to the slightest detail and avoids all stones and holes with a yawn. Our journey goes through thick vegetation, identical with the vegetation surrounding our tent town, with the mighty Avaralli Mountain in the background on one side and the river bank â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on the other. The animal kingdom is captivating and the animals are so used to jeeps that they do not react to our presence at all. Monkeys, deer, peacocks and buffaloes walk unhindered around us, but our guide ignores them completely and searches for something near the riverbank. Before we have the time to ask what he is looking for, we spot a alligator that turns its head towards us a moment before soundlessly gliding into the water and disappearing under the surface.

It cannot have been more than half a metre long and according to our guide just a few months old. The length of a fully grown alligator is more than 3 metres, so the mere thought of getting involved in a death roll with one gives us the creeps. After a while the vegetation gets greener as we approach a big waterhole. The evening before, a tiger was spotted in that same area, but since both monkeys and deer are calm and refreshing themselves, we are absolutely certain that the tiger is long gone. The hours pass and our hopes to meet a tiger are slowly fading. The jeep has changed course and we are now headed home. All of a sudden the guide hushes us by placing a finger on his lips, stands up, his eyes focused on a group of trees about twenty metres in front of us. When we come closer we notice that another jeep has driven off its course and everyone inside it is staring at the exact same clump of trees. It suddenly appears out of nowhere. impossible to detect in the high grass, but now it is crossing the path between us and the other jeep. He, as it is a young he-tiger according to our guide, stops in the middle of the road and turns its head in both directions, absent-mindedly registering our presence. Without giving us a second thought, he continues toward the small waterhole where he stops for a drink. Our driver starts the engine, drives closer and turns off the road at just a few metresâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; distance from the place where the tiger is standing. Our pulse is sky-rocketing as the tiger comes towards us, sitting utterly

unprotected in the jeep in the presence of a dangerous wild tiger of about 300 kg. The guide calms us and explains that tigers are used to jeeps because they have been around ever since the tigers were little, so as long as we stay in the jeep no harm will befall us. The sight we have just witnessed is more or less impossible to describe. The tiger, however, does not intend to end the show yet. Instead of going on its way after drinking water, he turns around and backs slowly into the water. He lies down with half his body now immersed in the muddy waterhole. uu

The gigantic front paws are crossed and we are sure that he is really enjoying the cooling effect of the water. At the same time, he does not lose sight of us, his head is facing us, his tail is up as a warning flag that shows that all his senses are on full alert. For a few short seconds, which feel like an eternity, we have an eye contact. His eyes are hard as stone. They signal clearly and unambiguously that this is his territory and that we are looking at him on his premises because he allows us to. He is undoubtedly aware that he is at the top of the food chain and that no one can do him harm. When he finally raises, kicks the water off his back paws and disappears into the high grass, it feels as if we have been woken up from a dream. The entire situation seems unreal and we will need many days to process all these indelible impressions.

The afternoon is calm and peaceful by the pool. The topic of conversation for the rest of the day is set and we are more than eager to tell everyone about our encounter with the tiger. We spend the next day exploring our surroundings, the spa section and Aman-i-Khasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fascinating herb garden. The time is flying and before we know it, it is time to say goodbye to the fantastic tent and head to Amanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second resort in Rajasthan. After a four-hour car drive in a comfortable air-conditioned jeep, we reach our destination - Amanbagh. Peace rules here. The contrast to Aman-i-Khas is hard to ignore. The architecture is greatly influenced by the Mogul era and all buildings resemble grandiose mosques with their big domes and beautifully decorated pillars. A SMALL WORLD Africa is back on the map for 2010. The Football World Cup will show how fantastic South Africa is, but if you don’t want to watch football you can enjoy luxury adventures with safaris and vinyards. One & Only and Taj Cape Town have recently opened absolutely top class hotels in Cape Town. In Stellenbosch, it’s the Delaire Graff Wine Estate that’s the place to see, where the owner, Graff, has a unique art collection at his vineyard and where David Collins has designed a renowned restaurant and new hotel spa. We also have our eyes on Marrakech, where the major reopening of La Mamounia, with Garcia’s decor, has allowed many people to rediscover the city. The world is moving east. Many of the Asian/Middle Eastern airlines are expanding to new destinations in Europe. In the prestigious World Travel Awards, Qatar Airways was recently named as having the world’s best business class. Doha is the city of culture in 2010, and the new Museum of Islamic Art has put it on the international cultural map; this spring’s pearl exhibition is worth the trip. Beirut is also developing, with two new luxury hotels: The Gray and Four Seasons. Asia is moving to Europe. There are many tourists from Asia who want to see the world. A majority of these Asian tourists want to stay at known Asian “brands”, which are also a gateway for Europeans who want to visit Asia. Inspired by the North Sea fishermen’s tough clothing, sewn in sailcloth and dipped in oil, John Barbour began to make functional clothing for use on rain-soaked Scottish moorlands and in cold and windy British coastal towns. They have received a number of awards over the years and, once again, they have been selected for Sveriges Bästa Bord, a guide to the best of Swedish gastronomy. Aspa Herrgård’s renowned kitchen serves well-composed dishes of a high gastronomic class. The menu has both international gourmet food and lovingly prepared traditional Swedish dishes. Generally, the food has a seasonal basis and uses the best raw ingredients from the local area. The impression given is that that the chefs understand that a restaurant’s good reputation goes no further than the last plate it served. A six-course tasting menu or a harmonious manor house supper is served from Monday to Saturday, both with carefully selected wine packages if requested. After dinner, exquisite home-made truffles are on offer in the manor’s charming salons. Rest in one of the generous, inviting armchairs in front of the open fire and enjoy the peace and quiet – why not round off the evening in the billiards room and choose from some of the 20 or so selected whiskies at the bar.

However, if you don’t want to go further than walking distance from the lovely surroundings, the raked gravel walkways in the park and the path down to Kvistudden are suitable promenade routes. Active guests can choose from a number of things to do. At Aspa Herrgård you can experience: “Murder & Mysteries”, storytelling, boules, golf at Askersund Golf Club, fishing in Vättern, cycle trips, picnics in magical Tiveden or on the shore of Lake Vättern, as well as boat excursions. Transport is possible from the hotel’s jetty to the golf course or other marinas. The lakeside sauna has a view over Lake Vättern and can be rented for private use. RO YAL AS COT 15th –19th june royal ascot is the year’s biggest horse racing event, or fashion show, depending on which interests you. The world’s equine elite gather here, for the summer’s most important social event, building on 300 years of tradition. Ascot was recently renovated, and has a large stand. The Queen has her own racehorse and arrives every day in a horse-drawn carriage from nearby Windsor Castle. Nobility, royalty and other VIPs are invited to the Royal Enclosure.

Ordinary mortals have to be satisfied with wandering around the public areas, but it is possible to greet the Queen as she inspects the horses and jockeys in the paddock. There is betting on beautiful horses, colourful jockeys and champagne drinking. The dress code for the Royal Enclosure is important; morning dress with a hat for the men, and the ladies must have their shoulders and midriffs covered. Pink was last year’s fashionable colour. uu

H ENLEY ROYAL R E GAT TA 30th juneâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;4th july henley royal regatta is England at its best, with striped club blazers, straw boaters, strawberries, Pimms and champagne. This is where you come to watch rowing, with muscular youths battling for victory. Since 1839, hundreds of teams have competed every year for the honour of winning the Royal Regatta. Everyone has access to the Regatta Enclosure. It is possible to arrange tickets to the desirable Stewardsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Enclosure or the Remenham Club if you have good contacts, which is where you will mingle with

royals and celebrities. Many people bring a picnic and the tradition is to enjoy it alongside your beautiful classic car. Naturally, there is a strict dress code; ladies may not wear trousers or shorts, and skirts must have a hemline below the knee. Men should wear striped blazers and a striped school or club tie, but a suit or ordinary blazer is acceptable. Otherwise, Henley on Thames is a pleasant small town one hour from London. uu

G LYN DE B OUR NE 20th may –29th august opera and music-lovers flock to Glyndebourne, a 700-year-old country estate with its own opera house. Many of them take the train from London’s Victoria Station to Lewes. From here, it’s a 20-minute journey to the estate. It is easy to see when the season’s underway, because of all the well-dressed passengers with picnic baskets. People gather on the platform for departure as early as 2 pm. First of all, there is a champagne picnic in the park, with English floral glory at its best. Sheep and cows can be seen grazing on the hills behind. Many people bring their own table and chairs, table linen, silver candelabra and butler. The dress code is evening dress with black tie and, for the ladies, cocktail dresses. The festival began in 1934 as a small summer theatre at which the lady of the house sang. After a few seasons, all the enthusiastic amateur singers

had been replaced by young and promising singers and the international elite still come here to perform every summer. The festival has had three special emphases since it started: Mozart, baroque opera and radical new 20th century works. Since the 1970s, rarely performed Richard Strauss operas have also been introduced to English audiences. The Swedish soprano Elisabeth Söderström has had enormous success here in Strauss roles. Wagner was only introduced five years ago, when the Swedish star Nina Stemme had her debut as Isolde in Tristan and Isolde, a performance that returns this summer.
