Creating the most powerful Bentley road car ever meant pushing the boundaries of 21st century technology. The result is an all-wheel-drive supercar that is faster and more agile than any Bentley yet built for the road. Available as a two-seater coupé or four-seater convertible, its muscular exterior and distinctive interior styling is unmistakably Bentley. It’s name? That was the simple part: This is the Continental Supersports. The Supersports is the extreme Bentley – a true driver’s car that

combines iconic GT styling with supercar potency. The 621bhp (630PS) engine provides a remarkable 590lb ft (800Nm) of torque, propelling you from a standstill to 60mph in just 3.7 seconds (0–100km/h 3.9 seconds), with a top speed of 204 mph. But more than raw figures, it affirms our commitment to develop the world’s highest-powered FlexFuel production car: a 6-litre engine that runs on biofuel, gasoline or a mix of both – all in a Bentley way.

You can reach the hotel either via a narrow alley or via the bridge to the Grand Canal. The hotel’s main entrance is very discreet. Service and flexibility are key concepts; breakfast is served anytime and anywhere. The lobby lounge with the open kitchen has dark mahogany walls. Specially made furniture creates a unique atmosphere, full of charm, where modernity is mixed with antique books, Murano glass, vintage items like old LV bags. F

or many of us, pristine nature is a desirable luxury. Namibia is one of the world’s most sparsely populated countries, with an area double the size of Sweden and a population of barely two million people, so days can pass before you meet anyone else in Africa’s most beautiful country. The landscape is full of contrasts and home to two impressive deserts. The world’s oldest desert, the Namib, stretches out along the Atlantic coast and then the Kalahari comes in from the east. The sand dunes in Sossusvlei National Park are thought to be 80 million years old and the tallest ones can tower more than 300 metres above the ground. This means the Namib Desert is the world’s oldest desert with the world’s highest sand dunes. It is a lunar landscape, with undulating firered peaks of sand; this is due to the iron in the sand grains,

30

which has oxidised and produced the red colour that shifts from pink to deep orange, depending on the angle of the sun’s rays. The sand gives the landscape a unique character and is a sharp contrast to the clear blue sky. It is usual for the sky to be cloudless, as Namibia receives an average annual rainfall of 50 mm. The biggest sand dunes each have an official name and number; some have nicknames such as “Big mama” and “Big daddy”, the biggest ones. It’s hard work walking up to the top of the highest dunes, it’s hot and your feet sink into the soft sand – but the reward is spectacular on reaching the top. The view is magnificent, it is still and quiet. Now and then gusts of wind break the silence with a whisper that erases your footprints from the sand. Below is the dry lake of Deadvlei, a tree graveyard. The bottom of the lake is ivory

white and the salt crystals sparkle like jewels in the sunlight. Desiccated trees stretch out their twisted branches in the desert heat. The Namibian desert goes on for mile after mile until the landscape is swallowed by the horizon. Little Kulala Camp is just over an hour from Deadvlei in a four-wheel driven Jeep. It is breathtaking, extraordinary and different. The décor is a tasteful mix of ethno-chic and colonial. It has the right level of stylishness, so it does not detract too much attention from the exceptional landscape outside. Soft hand-made carpets and white sofas with beautiful cushions find a home in this generously sized lodge. It is constructed from local materials and has an imaginative exterior. No trees or bushes have been sacrificed during building work, instead they’ve been integrated into the architecture.

After an outdoor shower (all the guest chalets have an outdoor shower and a pool with a fantastic view of the desert), a three-course dinner goes down superbly well. The kitchen has everything, including game and delicious South African wines from Stellenbosch and other well-reputed districts. One charming element is that the staff read the menu in both English and Oshiwambo. The later sounds strangely beautiful, like a song with click sounds. The noise of jackals outside in the darkness reinforces the Livingstone feeling. The light of hand-made paper lamps illuminates the small tramped paths that lead to your “Kulala”, which means “to sleep” in Oshiwambo. The chalet has a roof terrace that can be transformed into a pleasant outdoor bedroom if you wish. Beds are made up with thick down duvets, fluffy pillows and hot water 

bottles. Oil lamps light your way to the roof. Welcome to heaven! It is a magical feeling to snuggle up in bed below a starry sky. Shooting stars fall, one after the other. There is no time to make a wish, but on the other hand, what more could you want…? The next morning, the sunrise is welcomed from above, in a hot air balloon. Namib Sky Balloon Safaris organise booked balloon safaris. Half an hour before sunrise, the pilot adds the final hot air that is needed to lift the balloon, it leaves the ground and you’re away. Slowly, silently, you glide forward, time seems to stand still, it is magical! It’s impossible to see too much of this landscape, but there is plenty of time for reflection and plenty of space to digest all the beauty that surrounds you. Long shadows of antelope and zebra can be seen in the sand below, like statues by Alberto Giacometti spread among the sand dunes. The pilot lands with incredible precision, just over an hour later, for a cham-

The sun has already started to warm up the day when you are seated at the table and your body is bubbling with joy even before you’ve had time to sip your champagne. The little propeller-driven Cessna is bumpy and creates a large cloud of sand as it leaves Sossusvlei behind and heads towards our next destination, Damarland. The journey carries you over the Skeleton coast, a magnificent area where the sand dunes are gnawed by the waves. There are thousands of seal colonies along the coast. Keeping a good distance between the groups, they seem to enjoy the tranquillity. The remains of the rusting ship hulls that edge the coast are what has given it its name. Damarland’s landscape is entirely different to the red and dramatic Sossusvlei; it is wilder and more barren here. the colours are more discreet and monochrome. There are strong contrasts after just a few hours of flying. The are thirteen different ethnic groups in Namibia; they speak 16 different languages and dialects. The country’s official language is now English. Peoples like the Himba and Nama live in Damarland; their languages contain four different click sounds. The Desert Rhino Camp has eight comfortable canvas tents and the surroundings are exotic, to put it mildly. Only a thin canvas wall separates the guests from the wilderness at night. From the veranda, you can gaze out at Acacia trees and endless swathes of golden-yellow grass. The landscape ranges from hilly to flat, to jagged cliffs that rise out of barren soil. There are thousand-year-old rock paintings by bushmen to see in the many crevices, caves and overhangs that are hidden in the rocky massif. This is an area that at

first appears inhospitable and deserted, but it has an incredible attractiveness that entrances and strengthens the bonds between man and nature. The fauna is unique and fascinating, you can see the strangest plants and insects. Seventy-five percent of Namibia’s native flora and fauna live in Damarland; “Welwitschia Mirabilis” is the world’s oldest plant and can live up to 1,500 years. The termite pyramids are impressive, as is everything else that lives and survives in this extreme environment. Small animals like the desert chameleon and ground squirrel live side by side with herds of elephants and desert lions. However, the area is most famous for its large population of endangered black rhinoceros.

The desert surrounds you, challenges and absorbs you Wilderness Safaris owns 550,000 hectares that is at the service of the animals. As a guest, you have the privilege of sharing this exclusive, pristine environment. Desert Rhino Camp is run in partnership with the Save the Rhino Trust, an organisation that is responsible for ensuring the survival of the black rhinoceros in this region. As a guest, you contribute to this, as some of the proceeds from Desert Rhino Camp go straight to the Save the Rhino Trust and conservation projects. One highpoint is rhino trekking. The law of nature rules here and you are the guest. During the trek you may meet one of the country’s twenty species of antelopes, as well as giraffes, inquisitive baboons, herds of mountain zebras or ostriches that walk around in feather skirts like desert ballerinas. It is instructive and really interesting to listen to the guides who have grown up in the region and have studied conservation. They are enthusiastic about sharing their skills and the knowledge that they have inherited, experienced and learnt. When the moment has arrived and the rhino’s presence is a fact, this impressive creature is absolutely awe-inspiring. You are close enough to smell it, its snorts inspire respect and it’s impossible to take your eyes off it. Curiosity, fascination, excitement and fear hold fast your gaze. When you slowly back from the direction of the wind and leave the dinosaur-like creature in peace, you know that this experience will remain as a very special memory. Seofane Air Charter offers charter flights to the most remote and inaccessible places in southern Africa. Serra Cafema is exactly one such place; it is one of the most remote camps in southern Africa. It is situated on the Kunene river, which borders Angola. The camp offers a range of activities, including whole and half day trips on quadbikes. You drive into the desert, somewhere between nowhere and anywhere; you are as free as the wind, and moving fast! The desert surrounds you, challenges and absorbs you. With a cloud of sand behind the quad bike, you rapidly disappear into the billowing sand dunes. The sun beats down, there’s not a 

cloud in the sky, the heat haze deforms the silhouettes on the horizon and far away on a stony hill there is a flock of goats, which probably belong to the Himba people. The Himba are one of the last now surviving semi-nomadic peoples in the world; they live an isolated existence in a hard desert climate with few outside influences. This has allowed them to preserve their rich cultural lifestyle. They have maintained their traditions and there are now around 12,000 people who can say they belong to the Himba. The women have incredible hairstyles and beautiful hand-made jewellery which reveals the owner’s social status to other Himba. They do not wear much clothing, often just a loin cloth of goatskin. Their skin is covered with med a red body paint, which is made from fat, ochre and herbs to protect them from the sun, but it is also used for hygienic and aesthetic purposes.

The law of nature rules here and you are the guest In their meetings with this exotic, fascinating culture, Wilderness Safaris is careful to maintain the delicate balance that is necessary to avoid having a negative impact on the Himba or their surroundings. The company has approached the Himba in a respectful manner, which has resulted in the creation of a good relationship. This means that guests at the camp who are interested in ethnography and culture have the opportunity to meet the Himba. Wilderness Safaris has also decorated the camp with beads and fabrics from the Himba. The red ochre colour has been generously used, as well as shades of beige, white and other earthy colours that are found in the landscape. Halfway back to the camp, the driver stops the jeep. By a lone acacia tree, there is a table set with gin & tonic and pleasant snacks. Well-ironed khaki shirts, silver cutlery and linen napkins in the wilderness; everything is so well prepared and charming surprises are written into the guests’ daily programmes using invisible ink. The guest chalets at Serra Cafema Camp are situated on the river bank, with a large open terrace bedded in greenery, giving guests their own private world. Reeds reach across the terrace railing, palm trees provide shadowy oases on the wooden decking and the breeze carries the scent of the potato trees. When the sun is at its zenith, it is wonderful to take a siesta in a hammock and gaze out across the river at Angola’s biggest national park, which is just a few hundred metres away. The area is teeming with life. Baboons climb in the mountains on the other side of the river, crocodiles lurk below the water’s surface and weaver birds nest in the trees. In the middle of the day it’s too hot for any type of activity, but this is the type of place where you are happy to spend hours just absorbing the atmosphere. Why not relax in the colonial-style library and browse through coffee-table books, or enjoy a long lunch in the shade below a ceiling of greenery. The “pink hour” starts around an hour before the sun disappears below the horizon. A thin veil of pale pink descends on the landscape and the clouds become pastel pink, which is simply spectacular, for lack of a better word. The climax of the pink hour 

lasts just a few minutes and seems to be impossible to capture on camera in a way that does it justice; it is just astounding and unique, an Alice in Wonderland experience. Beforehand, you should make sure you have taken a boat trip, which the camp offers, up the Kunene river and moored at one of the sandbanks on the Angolan side. While awaiting the magical moment, refreshing drinks and sandwiches are served, along with other, more local, delicacies. During the river trip you can see crocodiles lingering on sun-warmed rocks, numerous colourful bird species and baboons that keep an eye on you. The river is flanked by palm trees and dense vegetation, but the desert takes over just a few metres from the riverbank. True happiness is an ice-cold lemonade in the shadow of an albida tree, when the sun is it it’s highest above Africa’s most beautiful country. Air Namibia has direct flights to Windhoek from Frankfurt four times a week and from London three time a week. The flight takes about ten hours, economy and business class. Since 1987, when Wilderness Safaris started to establish itself in Namibia, it has deliberately focused on creating economically and environmentally sustainable partnerships with state authorities and the small villages in which it operates. The approach is that the people whose land is visited are the ones who should benefit the most from ecotourism. As long as the local population receives sustainable eco-

nomic benefits, exceeding those of alternative land uses, they have reason to be involved in the long-term preservation of the flora and fauna. This is a prerequisite and a practice that works. Wilderness Safaris, and its Namibian partners in conservation and local communities, have now contributed to the longterm preservation of almost 20,000 sq. km. of land in and around important conservation areas such as the Namib Desert, Skeleton Coast, Damaraland, Kunene, Etosha and Caprivi. As nature conservation is just as much about people as it is about the environment, the company has used its projects “Children in the Wilderness” and “Wilderness Safaris Wildlife Trust” to establish important, comprehensive targets that have made great changes to the practices of nature-based tourism in southern Africa. Wilderness Safaris is a purely local safari operator and does not take bookings straight from its guests. Wilderness Safaris believes that their camps are best booked locally, in the guest’s homeland, by specialised travel companies who have extensive knowledge of the countries and their camps. These selected companies have long-term, close relationships with Wilderness Safaris and can offer good prices as a result. In Sweden, Wilderness Safaris works in cooperation with the Trackers travel agency in Stockholm.  By: Nadya Fridman & Leif Hansen

Time is short and therefore precious. It’s a question of supply and demand. The most valuable time of all is the time you carve out for yourself, when you can treat yourself to being entirely unproductive and settle down with a book or see friends. Since our furniture is created for these moments, so it can remain free from today’s demands of efficiency, productivity or utility.

You might think that its purpose is unimportant or superficial, but nothing could be further from the truth. It’s these stress-free moments that balance the rest of our lives: a role of epic proportions and of crucial importance. This is why our furniture is made without compromise. One of the hotel’s best known guests was Salvador Dali, who checked into his own suite every year and stayed for at least a month, along with his beloved wife, Gala. The hotel recently took a step into the future with the help of Ara and Phillipe Starck, who used their magic touch to transform the lobby, bar and restaurants from a state of gentle sleepiness to one of Paris’s hottest places to be seen and socialise. The bar and restaurants are vibrant with international guests from breakfast meetings to a final nightcap. years; Starck has combined the styles of a bar, living room and restaurant in a entirely new concept. The hotel’s address, 228 Rue Rivoli, has given its name to the hotel’s discreet and popular bar. It serves the special Cocktail 228; pear-lychee liqueur, raspberry-pear coulisse and champagne. An excellent alternative for a nightcap. A continental breakfast that costs €36 may sound like a lot, but it is worth every cent. It’s not every day you can eat breakfast in a three-star dining room and the vitamin kick in the freshly-pressed orange juice certainly feels threestar. This breakfast is not just served, it is presented by a long line of well-directed waiters and assistants, all in sober morning dress. Finally, the rest of your body can be taken care of in Spa Valmont, where you will be treated so well that you will also feel like royalty.  By: Ingemar Åkesson & Sten Axdorph

It is like being in a gigantic labyrinth with yet another ocean of perfectly stacked bottles waiting around every corner, bottles that will eventually be shipped out to champagne lovers around the world. This huge cellar, that lies below Taittinger’s famous champagne house, dates all the way back to the 5th century. With the perfect condi-

Now that more and more of the best known champagne brands are part of global drinks consortiums, there is a special thrill when the doors open on the family-owned Taittinger champagne house in Reims. The familial atmosphere is infectious, and everything that is told and experienced feels true and genuine. This could be because it is the

daughter of the family who greeted us and led the guided tour of the impressive aisles in the cellar. This is not her proper job, which is marketing manager, but in a family business you have to step in where the moment decrees. It is a fascinating story that is told during the hour-long tour. Everything is dealt with, from how it was 17th century Benedictine monks who accidentally discovered how sparkling wine should be fermented, to how the Taittinger brand was bought back into the family’s ownership a few

years ago. No questions were left unanswered and we leave the limestone cellars with an entirely new understanding of champagne’s history. Now it’s time to visit the second pillar of the family’s champagne production. The grapes are cultivated on the 256 hectares that surround the magnificent La Marquetterie chateau, situated in the best area of the Champagne district. With the undulating, almost luminous green landscape as a backdrop, the pink chateau is a tasteful spot of 

Unlike many of the other great champagne houses, Taittinger largely uses the Chardonnay grape colour and the gardens behind are perfect for a game of croquet. Nowadays, no one lives here, instead it is used for conferences, family celebrations and entertaining. There is absolute peace and tranquillity just now, but during a few stressful autumn weeks it is a hive of bustling activity – harvest time. The grapes are picked and driven to the presses, which are situated right next to the chateau, and everything has to happen during just a few weeks when the conditions for the grapes are at their best. Bottling also takes place here, and then the bottles are transported to Reims to age in the limestone cellars. Unlike many of the other great champagne houses, Taittinger largely uses the Chardonnay grape. The house’s finest champagne, Comtes De Champagne Brut, is made only from Chardonnay. The other wines are blended with the Pinot Noir grape, to differing degrees, but they are mostly Chardonnay.

In this Bond age, most people are aware that Bollinger is James’s first choice when deciding which champagne should be poured into his glass. But not so many people know that Taittinger is the first champagne to be mentioned in the context of Bond. Taittinger was Ian Flemming’s favourite champagne and is mentioned in a number of the books. In the film world, 1979 was the year that Bollinger took over the title of Bond’s favourite champagne. It’s often the case that the book is superior to the film, but we’ll leave it open as to whether that’s also the case for champagne. That’s up to you to decide. However, we can recommend a visit to Taittinger’s champagne house, which has something for both the uninitiated, who simply drink champagne because it tastes so good, and for sommeliers who want to further enrich their knowledge.  By: Christian Bohman & Leif Hansen

he German capital city has 170 museums, 400 art galleries and three working opera houses to entice a public that is often young and intellectual. There is an inherent rivalry in this mosaic of classical culture and avant-garde and its results attract a steadily increasing number of visitors with an interest in culture. Meanwhile, the city’s population is decreasing; Germany’s financial centre never left Frankfurt and Dusseldorf after the wall fell in 1989. As Germany’s creative centre, Berlin is “sexy but poor”, as the city mayor expressed it. Berlin’s dark 20th century history, partly during the Nazi era, partly as a divided city until 1989, is still tangible. Small areas of the wall, such as Checkpoint Charlie, have been preserved, and all the tourist coaches pass there. The Jewish Museum is a moving and thoughtprovoking place in which the visitor makes an interactive journey through Jewish history. Just behind the well-known silhouette of Brandenburger Tor is the Holocaust Denkmal; 2711 variously-sized concrete blocks that form a claustrophobic labyrinth, in which all generations of visitors can pause and reflect. 

simply strolling through the city and its new and challenging architecture is a great experience. It is best to start in the glass dome of the Reichstag, which has an unsurpassed view of Berlin. Sir Norman Foster has created a masterpiece. The queues are long, but if you book a table in the dome’s trendy little restaurant you can take the lift straight up! The intensive cultural life of the city has a menu of up to 2000 events each day, including concerts, vernissages, lectures and ballets. But playing to a full house every night for three opera houses is difficult. On many evenings, only 70 percent of the tickets are sold. The biggest opera house, Deutsche Oper, holds more than 1800 people, whereas Komische Oper and Staatsoper are smaller. Many legendary provocative and radical performances end up at the highest political level. In 2006, when Deutsche Oper performed Mozarts ”Idomeneo”, in which the final scene was decorated with the decapitated heads of Neptune, Jesus, Buddha and Mohammed, Angela Merkel had to make a rapid entry into the debate to quieten upset opera sensibilities. Berlin has a trump card with the acclaimed conductor, Daniel Barenboim, as chief conductor at Staatsoper. In the winter of 2009 this was where you could listen to the Swedish Katarina Dalayman as Isolde, and Placido Domingo, in Verdi’s ”Simon Boccanegra”.

HOTEL DE ROME

Stay in a banking palace

the famous hotelier and empire-builder, Sir Rocco Forte, always finds unique buildings. In 2007, he opened the Hotel De Rome in a classic banking palace in Bebelplats, a prime location in Berlin; the building was the head office of the Dresdner Bank until 1945. This is where classism meets international standard modern design, add to that the staff ’s fantastic service and we have a top class hotel with 146 rooms. Rocco Forte’s sister, Olga Polizzi, and Tommas Ziffer have created the hotel’s beautiful interiors. The lobby is a sober black with large pillars, and in the middle stands a magnificent empire table with red vases in a range of sizes, holding wonderful flower arrangements, with candles in red glass as a finishing touch. Dramatic, and somewhat of a Rocco Forte signature. It doesn’t get better than this. The hotel’s Parioli restaurant, in austere Armani colours, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The atrium terrace is opened in good weather. Before heading out into the Berlin night, have a drink at the Bebel Bar. Beautifully stylish. You can all round off a late night here, summing up the experiences of the day and evening. The hotel’s popular Spa de Rome offers massage, treatments, a gym and large pool; total relaxation in an old bank vault. The rooms are strictly classical in Pompey red, dove blue or muddy beige. You can sleep comfortably between Italian linen sheets in wonderful beds. The bathrooms are spacious with classical mosaics, baths and a separate generously-sized shower. In the summer, the hotel’s roof terrace

is the place where beautiful Berliners are in symbiosis with a few foreign visitors that know of this hidden treasure. This is where everyone plans for their night-time adventures, while watching a stunning sunset over Berlin’s new and old architectonic silhouette.  By: Ingemar Åkesson

he direct flight to Madeira’s capital, Funchal, has taken almost six hours and the plane lands on the newly extended runway. The sun wakes you the following morning. A few energetic guests take a dip in the sea; with the Gulf Stream right off the island the water temperature is a comfortable 20°C all year round. In Funchal, commerce at the market becomes increasingly lively towards lunchtime. Local businesswomen in colourful traditional dress tempt visitors with flowers. Madeira has a subtropical climate with pleasantly hot summers and mild winters and the island’s vegetation is impressive. Since the end of the 19th century, numerous travellers have delighted in the island’s verdant flora. But now the island’s hoteliers are investing in the trend for wellbeing. Modern guests want to feel good in both their body and soul. There are increasing numbers of exclusive spas on Madeira. The Golden Residence hotel, just outside Funchal, is one example. In its spacious, stylish surroundings, guests are offered everything from reflexology and shiatsu massage. “Wellbeing is increasingly appreciated. And I love what I do, helping people feel good and find balance,” says massage therapist Sonja Correa. You can also enjoy Rasul at Golden Residence. This is a treatment for one or two people that purifies you outside and in. You start by applying different clays to your body and then relax in a small and exclusive steam sauna. Time

disappears and a starry sky is all that illuminates the sauna. Twenty-five minutes later a tropical rain brings you back to reality. When all the clay has been removed with sea salt and water, a balancing aromatherapy massage with scented oils awaits you. The result is a fantastic feeling of peace in mind and body, as well as a skin that is smoother than one of the peaches at the market. Lunch of newly-caught espada fish with passion fruit sauce, served by the pool, is the perfect conclusion.¨

country & city The five star boutique hotel The Vine is located in the heart of Funchal and is an orgy of modern, thrilling design. Lying in a levada-shaped jacuzzi on the roof terrace, with a 360° view of the city, sea and mountains is a maximal experience. A glass of champagne, perhaps? Of course. The spa itself is all in shades of red wine, from the paint on the walls to the treatments. In the large treatment room you can enjoy a pleasurable massage before visiting the relaxation area, Thermo-garden. The surroundings are wonderful, and it is absolutely worth spending a little extra time here. There are refreshing alcohol-free grape drinks, tasty snacks and a steam sauna where you can choose from lavender or citrus scents. Fresh from the spa, you can take the cable car up to the leafy Botanico Jardim, where time stands still.

Choupana Hills Resort & Spa is a fifteen-minute journey north of Funchal. A bouquet of wooden bungalows is bedded in a tropical garden with a charming view of the Atlantic. The stone and timber milieu is clearly inspired by Africa and Asia. Check in and check out everyday. The spa facilities offer everything from facials to aromatherapy using the Elemis brand. A holistic al fresco massage before your siesta on your own veranda is a perfect choice. After an aperitif, the kitchen’s tasty interpretations of Madeira’s produce await you. The head chef takes the fresh herbs from the kitchen garden, but the guests’ favourite will probably still be the house’s passion fruit soufflé. Wellbeing for the soul.

Sand & water Variety is the spice of life, so why not treat yourself to a detour to the tranquil neighbouring island of Porto Santo? The ferry from Funchal takes a couple of hours. Porto Santo Hotel & Spa is sited just above the island’s famous eight-kilometre sandy beach; a beach where the sand has long been famed for its soothing effect on rheumatism and other joint problems. Several medical studies have also confirmed that the sand has a good effect on physical wellbeing. After bathing in the large but gentle waves, you can take a hot sand treatment at the hotel’s spa. You lie in a case of 40°C volcanic sand, with only your head sticking out! Half an hour later the therapist helps you out to rest in the Moorish-inspired surroundings, decorated with lots of wood and pink marble. The step from sand to water is a short one here on Porto Santo. The modest Thalassa Spa, at Hotel Vila Baleiro, has a

name that means sea. You can try out various water treatments using sea water, rich in phosphor and iodine. The Vichy treatment involves being massaged with water jets. Different and invigorating.

Madeira again The flight back to Madeira takes ten minutes. An hour’s car journey later you are back in the peace and tranquillity of the levada system, high above the sea. It is possible to walk for days along the water-filled channels that were hand-built for agricultural irrigation. Later, check into the eco-conscious Hotel Jardim Atlantico, which also offers a small but professional spa. But its most unique feature is probably the barefoot path in the hotel’s beautiful garden. Guests can try everything from walking on pine cones to wading in muddy water. A sensuous and interesting experience that results in happy, newly awoken feet. Lovely before a spa treatment with the hotel’s fantastic South African therapist! Both body and soul come to life on Madeira and the island’s hospitable attitude is a boost for your mood when your body has had its share. It is lovely to check into the quiet Calheta Beach Hotel, beautifully situated by a fine sandy beach, with dramatic mountains right behind it. But the massage can wait until tomorrow! Instead it’s great to just admire the view of the sea from the balcony, with a glass of dry Madeira wine and grilled mussels. The sun is setting and it is clear that Madeira is an island you’ll want to return to, soon.  By: Josephine Carr

M

alta is a small country with an impressive history. The first visitors came here 5,000 years ago, and hospitality is something that makes this archipelago nation very special. There is a history behind every stone, and the country is a boundless goldmine for people who enjoy old architecture and prehistoric temples. The most famous tales, and ones that are ever-present, are told about the mythological Knights of St. John of Jerusalem (Knights Hospitaller), whose warriors wore garments decorated with the Maltese cross. Malta’s capital, Valetta, is situated at the end of a promontory, with sea in both directions. You can stroll along hilly streets that are evocative of a kind of Mediaeval San Francisco. The main street, which runs like an artery through the city, is called Republic Street and is home to shops that lie wall to wall with historic monuments such as St John’s Co-Cathedral, the crusaders’ stronghold, and the museum in the Magisterial Palace of the Grandmaster, which is worth a visit.

The San Lawrenz Hotel on the little sister island of Gozo is an adorable retreat, where you are guaranteed no interruptions from the outside world’s stress and obligations Also worth visiting are the Upper Barakka Gardens that not only have wonderful flowers, but also an incredible view of the famous Grand Harbour and the town of Vittorios on the other side of the bay. For more “up to date” shopping you should head for Sliema, which is Malta’s second city. At the centre of the bustling shops and restaurants you will find the city’s only five-star hotel, The Palace Hotel, which is an excellent choice for anyone who loves boutique hotels with a luxurious twist. The best view is found from a private jacuzzi located on the terrace of one of the suites at the Fortina Hotel Sliema. The bubbling water combined with a bubbling glass of champagne and a view of the sun setting behind St John’s Co-Cathedral is a lifelong memory in the making. Malta has undergone something of a metamorphosis in recent years, with increasing numbers of luxury hotels becoming established on the islands. The number of alternatives for either enjoying relaxing and beneficial bodily recreation or experiencing a glamorous lobby at a five-star hotel located in a picturesque town has significantly increased. However, one of the most famous hotels has been on the map for a few years now, and is still number one for wellbeing. The San Lawrenz Hotel on the little sister island of Gozo is an adorable retreat, where you are guaranteed no interruptions from the outside world’s stress and obligations. On checking in you are taken through a number of examinations by specialists, who then put together food and activities for your stay, so your focus can be entirely on you and nothing else. Most of the island’s luxury hotels are located in the old fishing village of St Julians, which isn’t surprising bearing in mind its atmosphere and the surrounding scenery. 

jazz all that

This year, the international ”Jazz à Juan” jazz festival, one of the oldest in the world, celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. Antibes Juan-les-Pins, jazz’s European capital, will this year celebrate all the great musicians that have performed on Pinède Gould’s legendary stage since 1960. Photographer: E. Patsialos

bolstered by its international recognition, the festival is now planning its future as well, with young artists who will be selected to be part of ”Jazz à Juan Révélations”. This year’s programme is outstanding, with giants of jazz on the stage, a magnificent start on 14 July and everything rounding off with a prestigious gala dinner in 1920s style. Les Jardins de Jazz is just as elegant as usual, but bigger. Club 50 is an exclusive and elegantly designed lounge with a champagne bar that serves exquisite canapés. No more than fifty guests are admitted each evening, and the lounge is intended for people with buying power and a passion for

the festival and its unique atmosphere. Le Club des Partenaires with its “Jazz on the Beach” concept is a cosy bar with a jazzy atmosphere, where members and their guests enjoy a free bar. This is where people meet before and après jazz! Antibes Juan-les-Pins is in the middle of the French Riviera, twelve kilometres from the international airport in Nice and an equal distance from Cannes. walls, which applies to Cap d’Antibes that has welcomed rich tourists and their elegant luxury villas since the 1800s. The Americans, jazz and celebrities came to Juan-les-Pins in the 1920s. You could say that the city consists of two different, but complementary parts: on one side of Cap d’Antibes is Antibes with old stone houses and the Picasso museum, and on the other side is Juan-les-Pins and its sandy beaches. The city has a coastline of around 25 kilometres and five ports. Port Vauban is the biggest leisure marina in Europe and the second largest in the world. Those who enjoy boat-watching

will love the annual Voiles d’Antibes regatta, with beautiful old yachts and six and 12-metre rigs. If you wish to sail, you can do so year-round at clubs and schools in Antibes. Another event that sailing enthusiasts should not miss is the Antibes Yacht Show in Port Vauban, which takes place next spring. Hundreds of new and used luxury boats are exhibited and sold; it is best to stay in one of Antibes Juanles-Pins’ two 5-star hotels, L’Impérial Garoupe or Cap Eden Roc, but both will rapidly be fully booked so we recommend moving quickly. arkness and weightlessness take over. At The Grove, peace reigns and everyday musts have been replaced by much-needed wellbeing. The light from the panorama windows is reflected in the pool’s coal-black marble bottom and is a reminder that there is a world outside; but it won’t come demanding attention for a few days yet. The spa treatment was the perfect start to my stay here and my body is pleasantly relaxed. A few more strokes in the pool, then it’s time for a longer session in the quiet and welcoming relaxation room, tastefully decorated in timeless oriental style. There, in a state somewhere between deep sleep and slumber, the impressions of the golf course start to return. Tomorrow, while the dew is still slightly damp on the well-trimmed fairway, I will finally have the chance to measure myself against Tiger Woods. It was on this course that he took a celebrated win in the summer of 2006, in the unofficial golf world championship. Before dinner, a cooling aperitif is savoured on Collete’s cosy, wind-sheltered terrace. Here, with a captivating view of the rolling English countryside, expectations are rising ahead of the approaching meal. Head chef Chris Warwick, formerly an apprentice to the meanest of chefs, Gordon Ramsey, has won a number of awards since he left his apprenticeship to try out his own wings. He serves gastronomic masterpieces that are sensitively made from local ingredients, with extra plus points for the fantastic risotto. The meal is the day’s crowning glory; my soul is at ease and sleep washes over me the moment my head hits the down pillow. The early morning sun is still creating long sweeping shadows and from the first tee it is difficult to follow

the path of the ball properly. Perhaps it’s not a stroke that Tiger would have been remotely pleased with, but now the ball is in play; the next few hours will be occupied by this Championship course which, year after year, comes high on the list of the 100 best courses in Great Britain. This is saying a lot, as there are more than 5,000 golf courses on these isles, including some of the most famous and very best in the world. The course is pedantically managed and not a blade of grass is pointing in the wrong direction. The holes, designed by the world-famous golf architect Kyle Phillips, take a pleasant path through the valley’s abundant greenery. The greens are hard and lightening fast, it’s pretty much impossible to get the ball to stop and putts are always uncomfortably long. The Grove is open to non-members, even for those who haven’t made it all the way to an official handicap, giving it a guaranteed top five spot among the world’s pay and play courses. My defeat by Tiger after just three holes meant that the match was abandoned, despite golf ’s unique handicap system which means that even cheerful enthusiasts can measure themselves against professionals, and instead the round concludes with a pleasantly cool ale being served outside the clubhouse, The Stables. The sun is still hot, even though the leaves are thinning; it’s a wonderful Indian summer day and a quick decision is made to test the heated outdoor pool. Well-hidden behind walls of the reddest brick is something that no one in their wildest dreams would associate with a golf & country club situated a short way west of London. It has beach volleyball, a more than generous pool 

surrounded by a score of reclining loungers, tennis courts, a classic English croquet pitch and a 40 x 40 metre sandy beach full of activities for youngsters, with a gigantic tepee at its centre. The changing cabins on the beach have been converted to playrooms, with game consoles, LCD screens, boards games and other toys, each cabin for a particular age group. The kids’ club, Anuoska’s, means that parents of small children can dedicate themselves to the spa, golf or other adult occupations with a clear conscience, knowing that their children won’t give them a thought in the next few hours. The evening arrives quickly and after the deciding round of croquet, and a refreshing shower, it’s time be seated at The Glasshouse. The chefs prepare the best of Mediterranean, British and Asian cuisine live, in the middle of the restaurant. There are windows from floor to ceiling and a great atmosphere, and the meal is enriched by an almost indescribable view. To round off this day, dessert and a

cocktail are enjoyed on the hotel bar’s terrace, all the light of a half moon that shed some light on the impressive surroundings. As the weekend progresses, it gets easier and easier to understand why The Grove and Sequoia Spa were voted the Englishman’s favourite hotel and spa by Condé Nast Traveller. Time here is more than pleasant and filled with activities, but still wonderfully relaxed. As it draws to a close, a long weekend at The Grove feels far too short. Everyday life slowly makes its presence felt, but when my bag is packed and the room is empty, I have the energy to deal with a new week at work. And I have the knowledge that The Grove is always there to return to when my batteries need recharging, as well as the memories of a perfect weekend, which means that even the most grey and boring autumn day immediately feels a little brighter.  By: Christian Bohman

he décor at the The Town House is like that of a private town house with four floors, a roof terrace and an inviting bar on the entrance level. All nine rooms are individually decorated in a tasteful blend of antiques and modern design. This really is somewhere that you feel at home from the very first moment! The Townhouse is a wonderful oasis in the heart of bustling Marbella. This is a place to relax between visits to the jet set’s Puerto Banus. The hotel is just 300 metres from the beautiful beach promenade, and the beach clubs are closely packed below The Town House. The trendiest of these is of course Nikki Beach. In the evening, the in-crowd start with a drink on The Town House’s roof terrace and then, after dinner, continue to the classic Olivia Valére nightclub, which boasts interior design by the man who designed the Buddha Bar in Paris.

Many people choose to combine nights at The Town House with a stay at its sister hotel, The Beach House, located in the village of La Cala de Mijas, between Málaga and Marbella. This hotel, which opened in 2001, has a USP in its location, which is magnificent, in the middle of the beach. Both hotels have been designed by Kjell Sporrong, an incredibly skilled designer with the perfect touch. Elements of the décor can actually be purchased and taken home! The intimacy of these two places means that it feels more like hiring your own villa than checking into a hotel. This, combined with the marvellous weather and very pleasant prices means that you look forward to returning even before you’ve checked in. When the next visit seems too remote, the only comfort is that you can listen to the hotel’s cool lounge music collections.  www.townhouse.nu www.beachhouse.nu

How did Skargaarden come into being, and when?

What needs do you fulfil on the market (how do you differ from your competitors)?

“Skargaarden was born during a holiday in a really beautiful resort on Bali. The wonderful furniture that is now found at many exclusive hotels is often architect-drawn for that specific hotel. There and then, we decided to build furniture that we and others find attractive, people who see what is beautiful and appealing about carefully designed furniture in the same way as us. And perhaps we could then even be able to offer something to the hotels that we love to visit.”

What are the company’s key words? “Uncompromising and durability. We are uncompromis-

this, in our catalogues, on the website, in our advertising and when meeting the press and our retailers.”

Can you explain the design process? “Our architects start with our core values and the Scandinavian origins that we are proud to say are the basis of all our collections. Furniture sketches are produced during this process, evaluated and then prototypes are built for testing and further evaluation before finally being manufactured for the market.”

The aim is that as much as possible of the materials will be sourced locally to us, such as the Swedish oak and steel that we use.”

What is your master plan? “We aim to be present in eight European countries within five years, with separate general agents for outdoor, indoor and public leisure environments.” 

What will the weather be like this summer?

Where is manufacturing based and what materials are used?

“The usual mixture of sun and rain. We’ll remember the sun when the autumn turns to winter, but we’ll forget the rain as soon as it dries up.”

“All manufacturing takes place in Scandinavia, mostly in southern Sweden. The cushions are also sown in Sweden but the textiles – thus far – come from Italy and France.

he first thing you should do on arrival at Gimo Herrgård is to take a deep breath, look around and absorb the peaceful atmosphere with all your senses. The manor’s picturesque location, surrounded by generous grounds and forests, has a calming effect on most people. The building is reflected in Gimo lake’s magical waters, enhancing the tranquil ambiance of the place. Every decent castle and manor house has its own ghost and Gimo Herrgård is no exception. It has been seen on a number of occasions in the lake wing’s corridors and the manor’s secret passageways, sneaking around and frightening guests. Sofia, wife of chamberlain Carl Leonard Reuterskiöld, is the ghost who has decided to haunt Gimo Herrgård. The Reuterskiöld family lived here in the 1800s, when Sweden’s major industries were expanding. Sofia’s husband mostly lived in Stockholm, while Sofia lived in Gimo. Her bedroom was on the manor’s upper floor, by the stairs that you walk up from what is now the hotel’s lobby. Sofia and her husband had separate bedrooms and it is said that his lover used a secret door to get into Carl Leonard’s bedroom. It is also said that Sofia gets a kick out of irritating married men, for whom she seems to feels very little sympathy. She has never hurt anyone, but likes to rearrange the furniture and move things. Gimo Herrgård is a member of Sveriges Bästa Bord and

Traditions are upheld and preserved, for example, in November a traditional Skåne gåsamiddag is served with all the trimmings, perfect for those who want to enjoy black soup, roast goose and apple pie. A special experience in this old Walloon village is a Walloon evening. After afternoon tea, there is a guided tour of the local history museum and the Walloon ironworks and in the evening it is time for a period dinner with musical entertainment. Groups who wish to take a shared trip back into the past can book a director’s dinner, a feast worthy of an 18th century gentleman, with period dishes, drinks and trimmings. Food for the mind is also available at dinner, in the form of information about history, food and musical traditions. There are wine tasting weekends a few times every year, with a range of focus areas. Gimo’s skilled sommeliers will guide you and your taste buds through the exciting world of wine. If you would prefer to experience the scenery from horseback, you can book an hour’s riding with Gimo Ridhus, just 500 m from the manor. commercial counsellor Robert Finlay. The architecture is often described as magnificent, particularly the combination of courtyard, manor house and the surrounding buildings, which create a unified whole. The main building and its wings are connected using beautiful stone walls with rounded corner pavilions. Observant people will note the initials of a former owner, Le Febures, in the gates. If you want a bit of extra luxury, a good tip is a candlelit dinner in the manor’s well-preserved restaurant. Check in to one of the manor’s suites, with its own salon and open fire, jacuzzi, balcony, office and, naturally, a large and comfortable double bed. A bed that is perfect for a good night’s sleep after a delicious dinner, and when you wake the manor’s superb breakfast buffet awaits you as the best way to start the day. The area around Gimo Herrgård is also suitable for golf enthusiasts, as there is a good range of prestigious golf courses with a convenient distance. When you have taken your last putt for the day, it is great to put your golf shoes away and to relax in an armchair in one of the salons at Gimo Herrgård. A relaxing time concludes with a good night’s sleep in one of the manor’s 68 rooms, all of which have a different character and personality, making an unforgettable impression through their unique combination of furniture and colour.  By: Annika Wihlborg

to broaden your horizons, the surroundings have plenty of sights and things to do, including the Walloon ironworks with smithies, mines and manor houses, a trip to Uppsala, or why not a cable car ride across a 190-metre long quarry at Dannemora Mine. Gimo Herrgård is at the heart of Roslagen, where the population is increasing and the area is teeming with activities, including Östhammar’s music week, boat races and tennis tournaments. Early July is when the annual fish celebrations take place, when Sweden’s longest herring table is set in the centre of the cosy summer town of Öregrund. Gimo Herrgård was founded on the ore from the mines in Dannemora and bar iron from the Walloon ironworks in northern Uppland, which provided enough income for building the manor. During the Walloon ironwork’s period of success, in the 17th and 18th centuries, well-planned, town-like communities were built with a number of manor houses around them, some drawn by the era’s foremost architects. Gimo Herrgård was constructed at the crossover between two styles, when the ornate ideals of the Rococo were replaced by a more restrained Gustavian rigor. Gimo Herrgård is regarded as the first Gustavian manor in Swedish architecture and has thus made itself a place in Swedish history. It was originally built as a presentable home for

The Milky Way in the spring of 2008, Copenhagen’s hotels received an interesting new addition. This was the Nimb Hotel, a small-scale and individualistic boutique hotel situated in the middle of the Danish capital’s pulsing heart, with a Michelin-starred restaurants and its own dairy. Even people who have seem almost all of what hotels have to offer won’t be able to avoid being surprised by Hotell Nimb.

The Nimb Hotel definitely stands out from the crowd, not just because it is located in a palatial building neighbouring the historic Tivoli in the very centre of Copenhagen. The building, which is just 100 metres from Copenhagen’s central station, was built in 1909 and has been renovated and given an interior with a dark, oiled oak theme. The facade is very impressive at night, giving a sense of being somewhere else entirely, somewhere more exotic than the Danish capital. 

A feeling of considered luxury and exclusivity rests over the Nimb Hotel. Open your senses and abandon yourself to a world of opportunity and enriching experiences, regardless of whether you wish to enjoy a gourmet cocktail in Nimb’s bar, try a cup of what is probably the most luxurious home-made hot chocolate you’ve ever drunk, or are looking for something more solid in the form of the Scandinavian menu at Nimb Brasserie. If only the very best is good enough, you can visit the Herman restaurant, where the door is decorated with a Michelin star. After eating, an excellent pastime is browsing through Nimb’s well filled vinothèque, with wine sorts from some of the world’s foremost wine nations. Naturally, the vinothèque is located in the hotel’s cellar and has no less than 1200 varieties, which makes it one of Denmark’s

largest. The hotel has two restaurants: Herman, which has been awarded one Michelin star and serves dishes from Danish gourmet cuisine; and Brasserie Nimb, which profiles itself with the help of the open kitchen where you can watch as your food is prepared. Brasserie’s three kitchens are placed in the centre of the restaurant, which transforms the work of the chefs into a fascinating performance. Nimb is probably the only hotel in the world with its own gourmet dairy, with products that include herb butter, yoghurt and chocolate milk, all of which are available at the hotel, naturally. You could ask why a hotel would choose to have its own gourmet dairy right in the heart of Copenhagen. It’s not exactly a core activity for an exclusive boutique hotel, but dairy traditions are strong in Denmark; it used to be the case that almost every block had its own local dairy.

3 small sensations

Nimb’s dairy is simply an old local dairy that has been modernised and refined so that it only uses the absolute best and most natural raw ingredients available. The hotel is in the middle of Copenhagen’s bustling city centre, with Tivoli, Amalienborg, the Danish National Museum, the Danish Design Centre, Danish Architecture Centre and the Opera House within walking distance. Ströget is just a stone’s throw away, and is where you can experience Danish popular life at its best, preferably accompanied by a coffee and a classic Danish pastry at one of the busy pavement cafés. You should also take the chance to experience Copenhagen from the water on a guided canal trip. This gives you the opportunity to observe the “Sorte Diamant”, the black diamond, as the city library is called, and the architectonically interesting new housing along the water. The hotel’s name, Nimb, orginates from the Nimb family, who ran one of Copenhagen’s biggest restaurant empires in

the 19th and 20th centuries. When the restaurants died out after many years among the elite of Copenhagen’s restaurateurs, the buildings was converted into a bazaar, which does not feel like such a giant leap considering that the building most resembles an oriental bazaar in an exotic, faraway land. When you walk around Tivoli, Nimb is an astonishing deviation from the typical Scandinavian cityscape. The simple fact that Nimb has thirteen rooms, of which eight are suites, says a great deal about the standard and welcome you can expect. At Nimb Hotel, the risk of being one guest among many is minimal, if not non-existent. The rooms have been decorated with a sense of style and detailing. The beds have exclusive linens, all rooms have TVs from Bang & Olufsen, and they have open fires. Awaiting you in the bathroom are luxurious spa products from Tromborg. The art that adorns the hotel walls has, as with everything else in the rooms, been chosen with the greatest care. 

Channel One the dylan hotel lies right in the heart of Amsterdam, in a characteristic Amsterdam building with a tranquil garden close to the canal. Most of the rooms look on to Keizersgracht, one of the city’s most beautiful canals. Each room has an individual appearance, as here there is no fear of combining many different styles under the same roof. The Dylan is one of just over 500 members of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, an international group of individualistic and interesting hotels that dare to go against the flow and do their own thing. At a Small Luxury Hotel you can expect a personal welcome, accommodation that is out of the ordinary and surprises in the shape of innovative

design, unusual architecture or simply a unique overall impression. Holland’s capital is a dynamic, unpretentious and easily accessible city, perfect for discovering from a bicycle saddle or a boat. The many canals that run through central Amsterdam make a mark on the city and the streets alongside the canals are typified by low buildings and a small-town feel that is reinforced by the many small bridges across the canals. It is easy to just relax and let yourself be drawn into the city’s laid-back atmosphere. The Dylan is happy to lend bicycles to those who want to be one of the many people who experience the city from the saddle. You can also rent a boat with a combined skipper/guide who will steer you through Amsterdam’s waterways. 

Even though The Dylan is at the heart of central Amsterdam, close to the trendy and vibrant Nine Streets shopping district, calm descends as soon as you pass through the gates to the hotel’s leafy courtyard, where you can wind down with a glass of wine or a drink after a hectic day in the city. The Dylan also offers an excellent dining experience at its restaurant, Vinkeles, where head chef Dennis Kuipers has made a name for himself with his headstrong combinations of classic and contemporary cuisine. The restaurant was rewarded with a Michelin star in the autumn of 2009, and combines a tasteful menu with inspiring design. French-inspired cuisine blends with international dishes in classic and modern forms.

Amsterdam’s huge range of entertainment, culture, shopping and popular life is right outside the hotel’s gates Many hotels claim to have varying styles and designs in their rooms, but The Dylan has really taken the phenomenon of unique rooms to its uttermost in its 41 rooms. All the rooms have some form of association with Holland’s eventful international history. For example, you can choose to stay at the top of the building, in one of the hotel’s loft rooms, with minimalistic furnishings, distinctive wooden beams and a cosy sloping ceiling. One room has been designed in spicy colours, inspired by the East India Company’s journeys around the world, while other rooms have a strict and very restrained Japanese style in black and white. If you are looking for a boost and want to make the most of the daylight, you can check in to one of the entirely white rooms. In these, everything is white, from the pillows to the wardrobe, walls and carpets. A surreal light booster, a type of “light therapy lite” is included in the price of the room. Another category of room has been decorated with a garden theme in soft green colours that have a calming, tranquil effect. Amsterdam’s huge range of entertainment, culture, shopping and popular life is right outside the hotel’s gates. The royal castle and charming promenades with well-preserved 18th century streets are just two minutes’ walk away. Visit Van Gogh’s museum, Anne Frank’s house or stroll around the Nine Streets shopping district and discover all the different, specialised cafés and boutiques. The nearby PC Hofstraat has a great range of high quality shops, including Prada, Chanel, Armani and Valentino. When you have finished with the designer stores, Kalverstraat and Leidsestratt are just around the corner. They have a wide selection of exciting shops that are guaranteed to satisfy any and all shopping lusts and interests. 

now is the time to travel! ashes, an oil catastrophe , financial crises, civil unrest in Greece and Thailand. What a start to 2010 – and we are all looking at the travel forecasts. Will we be staying home? No, now is the time to travel! Hotels and airlines do not just need to be great, they need to be the best. There is a recent trend for grand hotels to use top interior designers, and even fashion designers, to create an ultimate experience. They want to create a personal style and give their guests memories for life. In April, we saw Giorgio Armani open his new Armani Hotel in the iconic Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world’s tallest tower. We see that airlines that focus on service are the best ones. Qatar Airways, which remains one of a select few carriers with a Skytrax Five Star ranking, recently claimed the World’s Best Business Class award in one of the most hotly contested categories. The airline’s Business Class catering was also recognised as the best in the world; Economy Class was runner up. Earlier this year we visited a scent symposium in New York, organised by MOMA & Parsons: we learned that all cities have their own smell. Trendy New York Bond no9 has created world famous perfumes with the smells and names of New York tube stations. Our favourite came from Paris, where Fredric Malle has developed the next level of scents with his Fleurs Mecaniques, a futuristic cube that delivers steam that smells of flowers for hours. Design Hotels is holding its Summer Forum in Berlin. It kicks off with the topic ”challenge your senses”, where key speakers demonstrate how important the senses are in the context of hospitality. We love flowers and scents as important details in a hotel. Its time to awaken all of our senses. Many travellers take along their own favourite travel-sized scented candle to create a home away from home. French Diptyque has always been passionate about creating scents from exotic travels and childhood memories. Our favourite Diptyque is created by John Galliano When will we get scented airlines? We will be following this voyages of senses – it is time to explore, so bon voyage! 
