A Love Letter to Evolution I am fortunate. I grew up in the Napa Valley and my family has been here a very long time. Later, I lived and worked in the town of Sonoma for many years. I believe that I have had the very best of both worlds. A piece of my heart will always reside in each county, for reasons both personal and professional.

NAPA VALLEY WINE TRAIN SANTA TRAIN I adore the Christmas train ride to The North Pole. It is a magical, holiday wine country tradition for children, as well perpetual children at heart. Joined by Elf and Fairy friends, the train conductor greets guests at the station and welcomes all aboard. When this interactive musical journey begins, passengers will sing, cheer, dance and meet the playful character Jolly. An entire cast of characters leads games and sing-a-longs on the way to Santa’s village and workshop. Letters to Santa will be collected and during the return to the station, hot cocoa and freshly-baked cookies served. Through December 28. - Royce Ann Hawkins, The Westin Verasa, Napa n MCEVOY RANCH McEvoy Ranch on the Sonoma - Marin County line, about 45 minutes away from the town of Sonoma, is the legacy of Nan McEvoy, heir to the SF Chronicle fortune. In 1989 she imported 1,700 olive trees from Tuscany which were then quarantined for two and onehalf years before planting and now, almost 30 years later, number 14,000! Grape vines were added to the ranch years later. Visits now include both olive oil and wine tastings and a “stroll about” this unique property. Besides the beautiful biodynamic gardens, there is a fascinating Japanese pagoda, as Nan had great interest in Japan and the Orient. Inside one of the event rooms there is a red, piano signed by Elton John and a large armoire decorated by the famed Wayne Thiebaud. After about a year and one-half, Sharon Leighty helped expand the program into Sonoma County as well, which is when CANV became The Concierge Alliance of Napa Valley and Sonoma (CANVAS). “I am very proud that we brought the two counties together,” said Smith, “As we struggled with a new name, our logo designer Michael Roche was the person who recognized that if it is the Concierge Alliance of Napa Valley and Sonoma, the anagram becomes CANVAS. How exciting, we landed upon the perfect name for a group of professionals helping people who are canvassing wine country!”

Through this process, it became clear that so many people interact with visitors. In wine country, everyone is asked what they like, and what they would recommend. “Everyone who interacts with our visitors is a ‘professional recommender’ which inspires me to find ways to connect and educate all of us,” Smith reports, “I often say that our wine region is known for the outstanding wine, the amazing food, and the beautiful scenery. To add to that experience, CANVAS has added programs and training so that our regions are also known for exceptional customer service.” In terms of the evolution of CANVAS, and what has happened over the past ten years, two things stand out. “We are very fortunate to partner with Holly Stiel and have brought superior hospitality training to Northern California Wine Country. We constantly receive feedback that the experience enhances the attitude and service of attendees,” said Smith who is frequently told by graduates of the program that the training has helped them turn around their attitude with difficult guests to create wonderful bonds and memories for wine country visitors. Smith is also proud of the CANVAS Hospitality Excellence Awards, a program in which individuals in the hospitality community nominate colleagues, “It is a unique awards program because in addition to complimenting their character, they also have to include a story about

Outsiders easily blend Napa and Sonoma Counties together as Californiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s singular, premium wine country. In truth, the two regions are very different; and therefore their evolution very different. What they have in common is that both have become increasingly attractive destinations. Not just for wines, but for cuisine, lodging, arts, entertainment, and even sports and activities. However, Napa County has 140,000 residents in 500,000 acres. Sonoma has more than three times as many, 500,000 people, in more than a 1.1 million acres. Neither county has grown much over the last ten years. Santa Rosa, the largest Sonoma County city has 180,000 residents, greater than the entire population of Napa County. The city of Napa boasts 85,000. Surprisingly, considering their reputations, fewer than 46,000 acres (9%) are planted to vines in Napa County, and 62,000 acres (5.5%) in Sonoma County.

eye-catching such as Ashes & Diamonds, Piazza Del Dotto Winery, Hall and of course the epitome of fantasy, Castello di Amorosa, have all opened in the Napa Valley. Also striking a new level of opulence has been Burgundian vintner Jean-Charles Boisset, who bought DeLoach Vineyards in Russian River Valley, Raymond Vineyards in St. Helena and Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma between 2003 and 2011, transforming each while simultaneously opening JCB stores for other brands. Meanwhile, economic, topological and environmental regulations have led to slim expansion of vineyards, therefore forcing prices of land, grapes and wine ever upward.

It is impossible to ignore the impact of the Napa River Flood Control Project fully completed in 2015, which preserved mostly a natural river, rather than concrete drainage ditches universally adopted for flood control across the United States. Before the project, no one was willing to invest in downtown Napa which typically flooded a few times a decade. The flood control project led to an explosion of innovation, notably Copia: The American Center for Wine, Food & the Arts. This non-profit museum and educational center in a once-vulnerable loop (“oxbow”) of the Napa River in downtown Napa was envisioned and largely funded by vintners Robert and Margrit Mondavi. It opened in 2001, then after numerous changes to at-

tract visitors and increase revenue, closed in 2008 in the depths of the Great Recession, but just before our recent decade of progress. Ignoring Copia’s problems, some of the same beneficiaries restored the 1890 Napa Valley Opera House, which had been abandoned after an earthquake in 1914. The bottom floor of the building was converted to an intimate venue that opened in 2002. The larger upstairs venue followed in 2003 with comfortable tiered seating for 500 and superb acoustics. Meanwhile as the river was tamed, The River Terrace Inn also opened in 2003. Unfortunately, costs at the Opera House overtook revenue, and without operating subsidy from a wealthy community and tourist taxes, the board turned it over to New York’s City Winery, which brought in a New York view of what would appeal to Napa. It opened in 2014 never operating as a winery. However, Napa is not Manhattan and City Winery left in 2015.

In 2016, world-famous Blue Note Jazz Club took over the first floor, and continues to showcase national and local acts while offering food. The Blue Note programs shows upstairs in what is now called the JaM Cellars Ballroom at the Margrit Mondavi Theatre, as does the Napa Valley Opera House.

Calistoga attracted Solage and the exclusive Calistoga Ranch, as well as expanding and upgrading the venerable Indian Springs. It is poised to take off with a Four Seasons resort and adjacent homes, luxe Calistoga Hills and a new resort proposed for the old Gliderport in the center of town.

Even more significantly, the Oxbow Public Market opened in 2007. A visionary development, it had rough times. Fortunately, it has become a major attraction creating a destination for winery tasting rooms, other venues and hotels in the region.

Food has grown to define Napa Valley almost as much as wine, with restaurants that gain more attention than any other area with such a small, permanent population. Stars are the famed French Laundry and the Restaurant at Meadowood, and recently the new RH Yountville Restaurant, but even local family restaurants hit standards of restaurants considered stars elsewhere.

that Petaluma has managed to maintain its small-town soul and community spirit. Sebastopol had been rather random, with one old-time street, but it has been upturned by the building of the Barlow in a former apple-drying complex. The Barlow is a multi-use development with a market, bakery, wine, beer, restaurants, offices and community space plus an adjacent theater. People scoffed when Windsor created a quaint, old-fashioned downtown town where there was none, but it has settled in beautifully as a refuge from the gentrification of Healdsburg. The new Oliver’s Market nearby has become a bit hit. The SMART train will soon reach Windsor, which should have a big impact. Healdsburg has gentrified perhaps more than any of wine country’s quaint towns, including the new Hotel Trio, but the Shed has brought both glam and substance to the town. Santa Rosa, by far the biggest city in the North Bay, is home to Railroad Square which has become a major destination, and its long time Hyatt Vineyard Creek hotel has been upgraded into a Hyatt Regency. The Town of Sonoma is fairly isolated in its own valley without a major highway or rail link. It remains charming, though it cannot seem to escape a tsunami of wine tasting rooms. A planned Oxbow Market-style development on the Plaza where the Cheese Factory now stands could transform the town.

NATURAL DISASTERS SHAPE NAPA AND SONOMA Through a decade marked mostly by progress and prosperity, two natural disasters reminded residents that we live in a shaky and delicate environment. The Napa earthquake of 2014 caused extensive damage, some surprisingly to newly-built structures. Some scars remain four years later, notably the Napa County Courthouse and the Napa Post Office awaiting rebirth as a luxury space. Likewise, wildfires that devastated parts of Napa and Sonoma Counties in October of 2017 destroyed thousands of homes and upended lives, but had surprisingly little direct impact on the wine business. It has been a long time since my heart skipped a beat in a tasting room. And thereby lies the rub. At a time and place where the visitor and the consumer are bombarded with competitive offerings for their leisure hour and dollar, confined to limited attention spans and are increasingly driven to make decisions based on their tech competence and ephemeral social media advice, the normative 7-out-of-10 performance will no longer suffice. The result will be slow death by a thousand cuts. The answer? A new take on how to use wine to excite the senses beyond a 95+ point score; more trial and experimentation wherever the customer touches the brand; a more thorough understanding of why the broad swathe of visitors come to wine country in the first place; and why their expectations are driven by ignorance, confusion and the desire for a curated experience that captures their imagination, warms the cockles of their hearts and provides long-time indelible memories and bragging rights. SHOP V MARKETPLACE At the age of nearly a century and one-half, the historic V Marketplace main building is the signature centerpiece of The Estate Yountville, a 23-acre property in the heart of the town. In addition to the marketplace, filled with more than a dozen boutique merchants and galleries, the property includes two luxury-lifestyle, resort hotels (Vintage House and Hotel Villagio), indoor and outdoor event space, a spa, several restaurants, and on-site vineyards. The camaraderie with neighboring shop owners is evident, when accessories from other merchants are displayed alongside Hoogendorn’s intimate apparel in the windows of her store. With the holidays upon us, and Valentine’s Day coming up, this tasteful boutique specializes in things that will make everyone feel cozy, sexy and beautiful. “We have created an elegant French-style boutique complete with pink doors and chandeliers,” explained Hoogendorn, “We also specialize in custom bra fittings for comfort and difficult-to-fit sizes and enjoy seeing our customers discover the beauty in our high-end goods.” Chocolatier Chris Kollar has been on site with Kollar Chocolates for seven years. This artisan chocolate shop in-

cludes a glass viewing kitchen, where Kollar creates miniature, glazed, edible pieces of art. The morning of Saturday, December 22, Kollar is hosting his holiday tradition, a Children’s Chocolate Ornament Painting Workshop. Citing that there really is not a lot for kids in Yountville, Kollar said, “This is great for parents, to start a new holiday tradition, to come to the local chocolate shop with their kids. We spoil the kids with loads of chocolate scattered all over the tables.” Apparently, the children are allowed to eat as much as they want, well as much as their parents will allow, creating a childhood memory for these future customers. Kollar explained, “I want to sell a little piece of happiness. Chocolate is a mood changer for sure, and producing our chocolates at the shop in Yountville is a dream come true.”

SEEING WINE COUNTRY A NEW WAY By Lisa Adams Walter

While wineries, structures, landscapes and experiences both old and new, are abundant in wine country, individuals that experience these surroundings each have their own sensory set, and first-hand point of view. This individualized and independent processing of a place, is what makes experiences personal and vastly different for every human being. Whether the scent in the air creates a bookmark for that moment in time, a historic building creates a flashback to childhood, or the entire landscape is something brand new, the way we each see things large and small is intimate, private, and literally, one-of-a-kind. The trick is to capture those fabulous moments so that they bring back the experience again and again. Master photographers Janna Waldinger and Lowell Downey have set out to share a super power: the ability find what it is that is fabulous. According to Dan Gaffey of Peju Province, the winery has been in business for 35 years and was seeking an elevated experience for their guests. “The guests meet the photographers in the early morning and spend anywhere from three to five hours out and about,” said Gaffey, “We provide access to our properties. It should be no surprise, then, that when Chef Strohle and Corey Milligan of New West Knifeworks met up in the kitchen at NapaSport, they shared an instant connection in terms of appreciating, and creating, products of absolute quality. Milligan’s company, based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, recently opened an on-trend retail shop in St. Helena. Milligan runs the company along with his brother Mike Milligan, they grew up in Columbus, Ohio. Corey Milligan headed west in the early ‘90s and bopped around from being a ski bum, to a white water raft guide and line cook for several years. One day, fed up with the bad knives he was using on the line, he decided to make some that were better. Their knives, expertly crafted in the United States for many different uses, are not just functional, but also beautiful. “All of our knives are professional quality and all of them are used both in professional and home kitchens,” said Mike Milligan. The kitchen knives have become favorites of celebrity chefs all over the map. Strohle agrees that the knives are both beautiful and work really well. She has been using a New West Knifeworks knife that is in between a paring knife and a chef ’s knife, “It is ideal for preparing vegetables, chopping things, and for a lot of prep work. It is also handy for finer knife cuts.”
