Damion Hamilton

Mars Lasar explores his fine art photography skills using traditional photography and cutting-edge computer technology, requiring equally specialized skills as a photographer and computer wizard. His sensitivity in both light and composition creates unique artistic pieces capturing the original essence of the image seen by the eye. He sees the world, as colorful, whimsical and magnificent. His work is on permanent display at Quent Cordair Fine Art Gallery in Napa. Born in Germany, raised in Sydney, Australia, Mars is also known for his platinum award-winning compositions in the music world. To date he has over 30 of his own solo albums and numerous TV and film contributions.

A third-generation Napa native, Damion Hamilton is a full-time professional photographer with a focus on editorial, wine industry and event images. As a young boy growing up in the Napa Valley, his appreciation for the characteristics of light always fascinated him, wishing to someday capture that within a photograph. After leaving college and spending ten years as a businessman in the corporate world, it was confirmed that a desk job was not the best direction. Now having been in business for 17 years in business with a team of 12 photographers nationwide, Damionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s company covers events ranging from ten to 40,000 attendees for Fortune 100 companies around the globe, as well as events and imagery for some of the finest wineries, resorts and hotels in wine country.

“We used to have to import everything, but over the last 30 to 40 years, we’ve cracked the code on so many delicious things from veggies to foie gras to wine to caviar,” said Ken Frank, chef and owner of Michelin-starred restaurant La Toque in Napa. “Truffles is the last thing.” Despite previous efforts to cultivate this expensively aromatic fungus in the United States, success rate has been dismal. The Périgord truffle is a slow, finicky crop that takes six to ten years to emerge and, since it remains hidden under ground, takes a specially trained animal – a pig or these days more commonly a dog – to locate. To add to the trouble, once found, it has a maximum shelf life of ten days and its unique perfume quickly dissipates. In fact, truffles at even the finest restaurants in the United States are typically already five to seven days old as it takes that long to ship and distribute them. “That’s why being able to get truffles unbelievably fast would be a game changer,” said Frank, who co-hosts the annual Napa Truffle Festival, which until now was never able to feature truffles actually grown in or anywhere near Napa. That is all about to change, however, as the first truffle-spore inoculated orchards planted back in 2011 are beginning to bear fruit – or in this case, fungi. In the fall of 2017, Jackson Family Wines, which owns Kendall-Jackson in Sonoma, found its first harvest of 17 truffles. The winery now offers its crop to visitors through its dinner series. Following suit, American Truffle Company, a locally-based business that provides growers with the science behind truffle cultivation, celebrated their own first harvest this past December. It included a large 108-gram truffle, which Chef Frank promptly shaved on top of his steaming tagliatelle. American Truffle Company and California Truffle Orchards are two local businesses that have emerged to help pioneering growers figure out the difficult mycological crop. So far, other wineries investing in truffles include Peju, Robert Sinskey and Hermosa. “People are beginning to realize that this high-valued crop can be complementary to the wine they produce,” said Robert Chang, founder of American Truffle Company who previously worked at Yahoo. “Both address the high-end market and it’s a matter of time for that mindset to become prevalent.”

My parents had a small wine import business based in San Francisco which they were not sure what to do with. On challenges and mistakes I sometimes struggle to have people understand and support my vision. It’s my fault, because I go too fast. I’m too impatient. I’m already onto the next idea instead of spending enough time cultivating the existing idea. I’ve been too early in two businesses. The first was innovative wine packaging. Because of our environmental focus, we were the first one to launch wine in aluminum bottles, PET bottles and Tetra Pak. We lost money, and I don’t like doing that. The same with beer. In the mid‘90s, we developed a beer brand called Apollo, the most expensive microbrewery in the marketplace at the time. It was the beer that fell to earth, aged in oak and packaged in a blue bottle. We were spending heavily to grow the brand but, in the end, I had to decide, “Do I spend more or do I cut it?” I had to cut it. I’ve refused a lot of private equity money in the past because I never wanted to forfeit my independence and direction to the control of a higher authority. I did not want my vision to be impeded by short-term, quarterly management reporting. I could have amassed a very large war chest by now. You can buy a lot of the wine businesses with billion dollars of dollars. But do I want to compromise myself by taking the money? That’s the question! n

The unconventional look and feel of The Prisoner Wine Company, reflects the different and innovative approach to making wine that was established when the brand was

originally launched by Dave Phinney nearly two decades ago. The Prisoner was a modern version of a California field blend of Zinfandel blended with additional lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Charbono. The label, a dramatic Francisco de Goya etching, is dark and dramatic. The winery now makes several wines (reds, whites and a rosĂŠ) with names to remain in theme with captivity, such as Saldo, Eternally Silenced, Headlock, Blindfold and The Snitch.

DISCOVER The winery experience at The Prisoner Wine Company is far from frightening.
