A chance encounter at Cook Children's Medical Center is all it took to set Todd Barrow on his mission to revamp classic country with his signature modern twist. One day, an American Idol contestant was slated to perform for the patients at Todd's place of employment, but the audio tech was nowhere to be found. When he heard the call, "Can anybody here run sound?" Todd answered. In walked Texas Music Hall of Fame Honoree Sonny Burgess just as Todd was setting up the live rig, and the two musicians struck up a conversation. Sonny told Todd about his work with Charlie Pride and Randy Travis and asked Todd if he might lend his technical skills to help build the recording studio sponsored by Garth Brooks and Troy Aikman that had in the works. This serendipitous encounter yielded a coffee meeting to review the blueprints for the project, and before long, Sonny was meeting Todd for coffee weekly to discuss music. Eventually, he became Todd's mentor, forever changing the course of Todd's career. Now, Todd Barrow is making a name for himself as a country artist to watch. The Texas singer-songwriter has racked up more than a few accolades, from a PRSA Award of Excellence to an Akademia Award for Best Country Album, and an artist spotlight in Alternative Roots Magazine,

American Pride Magazine and AVA Radio. He has appeared on television shows, including Good Morning Texas with Jerry Matheny and Texas Music CafĂŠ on PBS. He's even shared the stage and studio with some of country music's heaviest hitters, from CMA musicians in Miranda Lambert's band to Fort Worth Producer of the Year Bart Rose. But it's more than just Todd's success to date that makes him such a compelling country artist. What's most readily apparent in Todd Barrow's music in his heart. Now, Todd Barrow is making a name for himself as a country artist to watch. Todd's music is no country for older adults. While he undoubtedly draws his sonic influence from titans like Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, his melodies skew modern. He plays almost every instrument, from piano to guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and drums, and the multi-instrumentalist doubles as a songwriter for himself as well as for other artists. "If I can put a smile on someone's face through song, well, that just means the world to me," he says. "I try to get to the real heart and soul of a song. To me, it's not just words but a story, and I do my best to portray that with every line. That's my main draw to country music; the stories, the people, and the sincerity that comes from the heart." It's precisely that heart that has won over audiences around the world. Todd Barrow's recent single, "The House That Love Built," co-written with Sonny Burgess, was featured on RightNow TV and was honored by PRSA Fort Worth for its fundraising efforts on behalf of the Ronald McDonald house. Todd was featured in the lineup for Bo's Extravaganza festival at John Schneider's Studio, alongside such artists as Kid Rock and Tom Wopat from Dukes of Hazzard. He has received radio airplay from Italy Radio 6.75 for his single "Hot Southern Night." Todd Barrow just released his latest single, "Hell and Back," written by longtime Nashville songwriter Lonnie Ratliff, and is hard at work on new music in the studio.

again...

Listen to her voice in the rain... She told me a story of a number... And gave me a day to remember... Ishtar is here... I saw her in a flower... every-thought is clear… And now I have all the power… To write a love story… to draw all the glory… A little chrysanthemum whispered: follow your heart… I tried to draw it... so let me tell you about that part: I tried and tried...laughed and cried... I stood and said: Ishtar are you here? I want to finish the painting, so help me, dear! she listened...and came She told me the same : 11th of April when the story began... 11th of April, the story never ends..!

Ishtar is a primary Mesopotamian goddess closely associated with love and war. She and Tammuz are the protagonists of one of the world's first love stories, but the romance doesn't end in lasting happiness for them. Ahmad Akrum

Five factions run the underground life of the prestigious Haldwell boarding school. At the head of the most powerful faction - The Spades - sits Selah Summers. By turns charming and callous, she chooses whom to keep close and whom to cut loose, walking the fine line between being feared and loved. In the closed world of an elite Pennsylvania boarding school, Haldwell, the student body, is run by five factions. Seventeen-year-old Selah Summers (Lovie Simone) runs the most dominant group, the Spades, with unshakable poise, as they cater to the most classic of vices and supply students with coveted, illegal alcohol and pills. Tensions between the factions escalate, and when Selah's best friend/right hand Maxxie (MOONLIGHT's Jharrel Jerome) becomes distracted by a new love, Selah takes on a protĂŠgĂŠe, enamored sophomore Paloma (Celeste O'Connor), to whom she imparts her wisdom on ruling the school. But with graduation looming and Paloma proving an impressively quick study, Selah's fears turn sinister as she grapples with losing the control by which she defines herself. In her feature debut, writer/director Tayarisha Poe immerses us in a heightened depiction of teenage politics. This searing character study encapsulates just how intoxicating power can be for a teenage girl who acutely feels the threat of being denied it. Exciting newcomer Lovie Simone's performance beautifully embodies both Selah's publicly impeccable command and the internal fears and uncertainty that drive it.

A CONVERSATION WITH WRITERDIRECTOR TAYARISHA POE

How did this project originate? I made an overture to Selah and the Spades, called "Overture," in 2014, knowing I eventually wanted to make a feature. But I didn't know how to write a feature script, and I didn't know what it would be about, so I wrote short stories about the characters and their world — one every day for the month of November 2014. At the end of the month, I had all these stories. Since I knew how to write and take photos, I turned the stories into separate multimedia works. It's not the most conventional approach to making a movie, but it worked for the story because I wound up spending so much time worldbuilding and thinking about the lives of these kids, which in the end made the feature itself so much more complex and richer.

What was the inspiration for the story? After graduating from college in 2012 and starting a real job, I kept wanting to write characters that did whatever they wanted, who kept moving forward in life without overthinking things or even thinking about them at all.

At what point did you decide to make a gangster movie set in high school? From the project's inception, the first Selah story I wrote was about Selah watching from afar as Maxxie beats up this kid who owes them money. It was about this girl who doesn't get her hands dirty — she sends other people to do her dirty work. That's the kind of story I've always been drawn too.

Who is Selah, and how has she evolved over the years? She's a 17-year-old girl who's already well aware that her actions are constantly under review by others, but I'm still asking myself from where that comes. She's been around for a long time, but she's always been the character she is. She's an amalgamation of the strong women I'm friends with and

sometimes see myself as , but it's less about who those women actually are than it is about how others perceive them. Selah was born out of this frustration of me knowing that if we're too headstrong or aggressive, I might be stereotyped as an aggressive black woman, so I spent a lot of time being chill and eventempered. But it's exhausting to think about how other people are seeing you constantly. Selah was born of my frustration with that. Combined with the notion of examining what life would be like if you didn't have to lean into the image of what you should be, or how you should act, or what you should be doing with your life, or your body, or your energy. Selah came out of those feelings, and she's evolved over the years into something deeper and more complex.

This is a movie about power. What did you want to explore about power through this movie or these characters? Power is an addictive thing, and I'm interested in the things people do in order to hold onto power, especially if you're a person who lacks power, like a woman, for example.

What will you do to hold onto power once you have it? I'm interested in exploring that, because who doesn't want power? Who doesn't want to be able to do whatever they want, and nobody can tell them otherwise — to me, that's a thrilling thing. TAYARISHA POE (Writer / Director) Tayarisha Poe is a storyteller from West Philly who believes that all stories are inherently multisensory and multidimensional and thus should be told that way. She was chosen as one of the "25 new faces of the independent film" by Filmmaker magazine in 2015, and in 2016 she received the Sundance Institute's Knight Foundation Fellowship. In 2017 she was selected for the January Sundance Screenwriters Lab and the June Sundance Directors Lab. She is a 2017 Pew Fellow.
