Adam Wedd 2020, started with Adam playing a bunch of new songs to the cleaners every morning at the Chiswick based studio where he was working.

Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

Adam's USA & European live shows were all postponed due to the pandemic, so he has had to get even more creative. Turning his North London flat into a serious writing cave and cowriting with people through a mixture of ZOOM / Whatsapp and socially distanced studio sessions.

Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

One of these has culminated in the recent release of the co-written 'Better Man' song he wrote with Alan Chan (Universal, Team Olly Murs, The Voice UK).' Adam has been beavering away, writing over 500 songs during this pandemic.

Andy Heaton

Reported by Shelley Jernigan Pekala

1. How old were you when you showed an interest in acting?

I was a bit of a late starter and recall being about 50 when I had a longing to do something different. At that point in my life, I was a car dealer, had a lot of free time, and wanted to fill the missing gap in my life. I joined Mint Casting, a Support Artist Agent, and was instantly thrown into a fantastic job on Peaky Blinders series 4, a show that had a huge international reputation. During my first day on set, I was pushed, pulled, moved here, there, and everywhere. As a newbie, this was a big surprise and shock to the system after working for myself and following my own

rules for so long. I nearly gave up that first day. However, luckily for me, I went back on the second day and felt much more connected with people and businesses. It was a bit of a light bulb moment and instantly knew that I had just found my calling in life. Better late than never, as they say. 2. Who or what do you draw your inspiration from?

If I'm being completely honest, I've acted my way through the whole of my life. I come from a working-class background, which in the U.K. means you have to learn to survive the sharp realities of life from a young age, managing on little money, and using

Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

wit, humor, and friendship as your survival kit.

My parents were okay but having a working mother and a violent father meant I had to learn how to act to protect myself. Throughout my life, I've had many hilarious and sometimes tragic life events. I do think my story is probably better than any book or movie. My inspiration to act comes from my understanding that acting in real life can drastically change the outcome of a situation. Therefore, a good actor who understands the scene and becomes the character will transform a scene and bring it to life.

© Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

3. How many different roles have you played so far?

During my time as an actor, I've played the lead in two independent feature films BardoBebop and Bebetter, been a gangster in J1S, God in a BBC Tv pilot and many other characters. I have just finished a few days on a Hollywood

blockbuster movie that is due for release in 2022. I am waiting for confirmation on two more.

excited about how amazing this job is and how grateful I am that my talents are being recognized.

My industry progression has led me more recently to move away from being a support Artist and into the official Actor category. It's like a dream come true. I wake up everyday feeling

My big break came after I was cast as the lead role in 2 international feature films BardoBebop, Bebetter.

Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

Admittedly it was hard work, particularly having to learn so many lines in a relatively short period of time, but I quickly picked up techniques to manage that. Each day is a chance to learn and develop so that I can become the very best version of myself. My most recent role was in a BBC comedy series, yet to be released,

playing God's role. The casting director loved how down to Earth I was and how I could improvise comedy material on the spot. One of my greatest qualities is that I'm a joker in real life, so comedy acting comes very naturally to me. I'm also just about to go and film a pilot new show, playing a bent copper...

Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

which here in the U.K. means a corrupt detective. 4. What has been your favorite role, and why?

I have quite a rugged appearance, am tall and broad-shouldered, a tough man look. As a result, I usually get cast as some sort of criminal gang member or a policeman.

My proudest moment was escaping this type of casting and being seen for my comic value, playing God's role, who lives in a mental institution. That pilot has now been commissioned and will be filmed next year, so I can't wait to see what other paths open up to me. 5. What has been the ultimate experience so far while being in the Industry?

Going to an audition and realizing that the role I was auditioning for could easily have been a chapter out of my own life had I not made different choices. Luckily for me, I had the mental strength needed to cope after a tragic accident in my life. Because of this, I had a deep connection with my character Daniel in Bardobebop. Not only that, but this

film was the first time someone put their faith in me and gave me a lead role in a feature film. 6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

If I could wave a magic wand, the best possible outcome would involve having a role in a mainstream TV show, as well as taking on more prominent roles within films. I don't see any limits to where I could get. I am dedicated, determined, and work hard. 7. How has the COVID pandemic changed your acting career?

During the Covid-19 pandemic, I have focused my attention on my scriptwriting. It's another talent that I've discovered in the last 2 years. I've written a short film titled Contained, and we start filming that in

Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

December. It's a very dark film this is a scene set in the north of England about a dual heritage woman who's experience of abuse as a young girl leads her to develop into a femme fatale, hell-bound on revenge against the gang of men that abused her. This is an exert from a larger project that starts when G is 5 and plays until the present day. I have a very active and creative mind with so many ideas I don't have time to follow them all through. I'm hoping I can develop my scriptwriting while staying involved as an actor. Instagram Andyheaton_ IMDB-andyheaton Www.spotlight.com/profile /1573-9050-1893 Twitter. @andyheaton01

To b y A r m o u r Reported by Shelley Jernigan Pekala How old were you when you showed an interest in acting?

Acting found me about six years ago when I met a man in a pub who had just finished the day working as an extra on Peaky Blinders. Having recently been released from prison (growing cannabis)and unable to find any sort of job. I was interested in the availability and financial

part of his career; I found out it was easy to join an agency and that with the right look, you could work pretty regularly, and the pay wasn't that bad. He gave me the number of his agent, I sent some selfies over, and before I knew it, I was booked as an extra on a TV show called Paranoid as a German Scientist! From my first day on that Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020 set, I knew this is what I

had been craving all my life; you see, from a very young age, I acted! But I acted the fool, acted like a hard man, acted like a gangster. I'm none of these things, and it wasn't until that moment when the director called the action on my very first day in front of a camera that I realized I had been acting all my life, just not for the right reasons.

From that day on, I have strived to be the actor I know I can be . I have had lead and co-lead roles as well as a career as a supporting artist in British TV and Film. Who or what do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from a lot of things. Being a proud Scotsman, one of my first memories of TV and Film is having 4 TV Channels and a local

cinema in Paisley. I grew up watching regional television centered around Scotland. I remember watching Billy Connolly, Sean Connery, Bill Patterson, etc. all-in films that had a pretty profound effect on me as the films were about men being men, pretty violent stuff. As a kid, I thought this was the way of the world as to where I lived in the 1970s 80s 90s Scotland

Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

was a violent place for a young guy to be. I was slashed and stabbed in 3 different incidents before I was 22. The last incident caused my heart to stop 3 times, and I ended up with over 200 stitches in my neck and body and vivid memory of light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

© Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

My favorite time on set as a supporting artist was on Peaky Blinders, and I was a lowly office worker at the Shelby Car Factory. That was a 14-day shoot, and I was new to the game then and wondered at how it would take 3-4 hours to get 10 seconds of a scene as everything had to be done, front, back, sides, close-ups, and it all had to be perfect. Being in close contact with the main cast was a dream for a Peaky Blinders fan like myself.

The last role I played was in the upcoming The Drugs Game, written and directed by the hugely talented Clarke Tribe. I play a silent but violent gangster called Billy,

who hates drugs but loves the smell of cocaine and indulges a lot. But gets the jobs done despite it. It's a role I'm very proud of and one that

Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

should catapult the cast into the mainstream TV / Movie industry in the UK and hopefully further when it is released next year.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years ?

In five years, I see myself in bigger roles, starting roles, quality productions, and British productions. I have strived to be the best actor I know I can be. I have had lead and colead roles as well as a career as a supporting artist in British TV and Film. I won't stop acting. I will keep pushing forward to achieve my goals.

I first showed an interest in acting at around the age of four years old. I used to watch films like Rocky, Rambo, Karate Kid, and Ewoks, then spend the rest of the day and evening re-enacting them out. My inspirations mainly come from seeing the success of the other big named actors. They inspire me to keep digging deep with my own goals and what I'm doing. I would love to become known for my acting abilities and something positive in place of what I have previously been known for. It is of no secret that I played a massive part in the UK's underworld for a substantial portion of my life before turning things entirely in the opposite direction. I luckily managed to turn it all around to the point where I now voluntarily help and support others, especially troubled youths. If I could get as much

recognition in the film industry as I did as a villain, then I've cracked it and shall go on to do very well and go places. To date, I have played fourteen roles, now of which are all decent little parts. My favorite role had to be playing the character, Charlie, in my very own film "THE DRUGS GAME." The majority of this film has been written and somewhat based on my own life's escapades. "THE DRUGS GAME" is now in the final stages of post-production. This project has been one hell of a journey for me, with many hurdles to tackle along the way, but I have finally pulled it off. Not only do I play the lead role in the film, but I am also the producer. I wrote the film, I cast the film, I sourced locations, I monitored all cast outfits, I monitored continuity, I scheduled and arranged all the shoot dates and call sheets. I overlooked all the shots, I directed a

majority of it, I'm joint editing it all. I even funded the whole project from my own pocket! I do need to acknowledge and thank Rainy Rixon, Kerri Eastaugh, and Terry Fay for their parts to help with the production side of things . Producing my own full feature film had to be my ultimate experience in the film industry so far . If it weren't challenging enough for me to tackle all of the above, we were then hit with the COVID 19 hurdle and fell victim to a five-month delay. However, in my eyes, this was no setback. In fact, I turned it into a positive and wrote another superb film script and wrote another big chunk of my book "IS IT CLEVER", which shall be published next year. In another five years time, my aim is to have two books and at least three of my own films on the shelves. BELIEVE, AND YOU SHALL ACHIEVE!! Reported by Shelley Jernigan Pekala

As for us (at RC Caylan Atelier), we are doing everything we can to operate the store and keeping our staff and customers safe due to the pandemic. Overall, we've kept a positive attitude and got through these tough times together. We are still following health protocols, such as washing our hands, wearing our masks, sanitizing surfaces, taking

each other's temperatures, and providing sanitation stations throughout the store. As for our retail situation, shopping can be a little technological these days due to the pandemic, but we can still reach out to our customers from our website, social media, and zoom consultations. ASPARA FASHION WEEK AW21/22 by Saif Rahman Sozib Great silk road! Dialogue of cultures. The silk road as a trade route appeared in the III century BC and lasted until the XVI century. Many devastating wars, destruction, fires, famine, and pestilence have seen the ancient trading cities located along the silk road. Some of them have

sunk into eternity, leaving descendants only nameless ruins, others more than once burned in the fire and died, but were reborn again to amaze the world with wealth, blue domes, and openwork terracotta ligature of mausoleums and mosques. The main route Of the excellent silk road on Kazakhstan's territory ran through the South of the country. From China's border, trade caravans moved through the cities of Merke, Taraz, Sairam, Yasi, Otrar further to Central Asia, Persia, Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020the

Caucasus, and Europe. All these cities owe their appearance to merchants who, overcoming the vast Kazakh steppes, arranged stops that turned into caravanserais, and those, in turn, into settlements that eventually grew into cities. Along with goods, crafts, architecture, culture, art, and religions spread along the silk road. Thus, the great silk road was a symbol of relations between the West and the East.

Mission of Creation by Aidarkhan Kaliyev by Saif Rahman Sozib

East and West have long and successfully converged in fashion and continue to influence each other. On the one hand, Asia was Europeanized and began to wear unusual clothes. On the other hand, the

motifs, decor, designs, and principles of Oriental clothing have penetrated into fashion during the last centuries and greatly changed the European concept of clothing. Designers from the East Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

began to set trends in the world of high fashion. They bring their vision, connected with their own national mentality and knowledge of their national clothing's peculiarities.

One of Kazakhstan's first designers, who "cut a window to Europe," is Aidarkhan Kaliyev. His outfits combine the national color in a modern style and has repeatedly represented Kazakhstan at international events. It all started after Kazakhstan gained independence. In the era of the 90s folk, costumes became popular. The first ethnographic collections of Aidarkhan Kaliev were presented under the names "Echo of ancient Taraz," "Great Silk Road," "Great Steppe," "PeriTaraz.“ The appearance and colorful style of the collections aroused the audience's bright interest, especially foreigners who were delighted and interested in nomads' national costumes. Since then, since 2000,

national costumes, which are in demand and popular in both fashion insudousria and everyday life, among buyers, sew in the fashion house "AsylDesign." And it is not surprising that in the last 10 years, the founder of the style of "neofolklore" was Aidarkhan Kaliyev, who creates at least two seasonal collections per year. The basis of almost themes of the collections is the friendly relations between the West and the East, the image and life of the ancient nomads and the Kazakh people, the Great Silk Road.

The peculiarity of Mr. Aidarhan's fashion house lies in the fact that it produces fabrics with the ethnic style of the author's print. (Development of a pattern applied to the surface of the fabric),

Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

adapted to new models and made using computer technology. Since 2000, the fashion house "Asyl-Design" has been developing costumes and props for major orchestras and ensembles, many creative groups, and a variety of artists. Against the world's famous artists' backdrop are not lost such renowned opera singers as Camilla Ribeiro Sauso and Myra Muhamedkzy, etc... They gladly used the services of the fashion house "AsylDesign" to shine both on stage and in life. Aidarkhan Kaliyev is the chief designer of the Asyl Design Fashion House, which arose as a result of work and perseverance, talent, and rich imagination.

He is also the founder of the Aspara College of Modeling and Business in Taraz, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Art Studies, a member of the Association of Clothing and Textile Manufacturers of the People's Republic of China, a member of the Union of Designers of Kazakhstan, a member of the International Union of

Designers of Uzbekistan, a member of the Eurasian Union of Designers, an official partner of more than 10 of the world's largest fashion weeks and the author of over 80 image and seasonal collections. Long and deservedly considered the founder of the style of "neo-folklore" in Kazakhstan.

Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

Thank you to Aidarkhan Kaliyev that in 20 years of its existence, his aspara college has become a brand in the field of education of our country and recognizable in the global world of fashion, as a platform where fashion industry professionals are trained as an innovator in education and production.

During its existence, Aspara College became known for its alumni who promote nomads' culture and traditions in world fashion. It is there that young designers are taught the concept of two immutable rules. The first - no modernization can take place without the preservation of national culture; second, to move forward, we need to abandon those elements

of the past that prevent the nation from developing. Young designers have the opportunity to successfully assimilate the development of the fashion industry of Kazakhstan. They learn the ability to cooperate at the international level in the world of fashion, raise the status of professions related to the manufacture of clothing and traditional crafts. Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

Since 1999, the Aspara College of Modeling arts and business has trained more than 500 talented designers and fashion designers, hairdressers, make-up artists in demand in all the cities of Taraz and Kazakhstan. Aidarkhan, as a founder, contributes to the training of specialists.

Designer :Kaliyev Aidarkhan Miralievich works competently, talentedly, and easily in this direction. Based on the spiritual development program, revives in modern fashion unique Kazakh styles and traditions of centuriesold Kazakhs, claiming that the national heritage of our ancestors has always existed. Under his leadership, brand models from the domestic brands "ASPARA" and "Aidar Khan" are produced. His name has become a brand that is now known, even those who are far from the fashion-sphere. Aidarkhan became the first designer who dictated the style of clothing and the style of neofolclor in life. For his work, the designer was awarded prestigious awards and participation in large-scale. International fashion festivals: the International Fashion Designers Competition "Couturier

of the Year" (Moscow); Baltic Fashion Week (Riga, Latvia); International National Costume Festival (Astana); Displays of author's collections at the World Expo (Spain, Germany, China, Kazakhstan); displays of the author's collection at the WTM International Exhibition in London; Eurasian Fashion Week in China, Fashion Week in Serbia; Asian Fashion Week Europe in the Netherlands and Milan Fashion Week. Aidarkhan Kaliyev is the first Asian designer to take part in official fashion week programs in Paris, Milan, Amsterdam, Berlin, Istanbul, Stockholm, Spain, Malaysia, Serbia, Delhi, China. Thanks to his activities, for the first time since 2018, international screenings were organized in the Southern Region of Kazakhstan. The whole world started talking about Kazakhstan. Huge, time-

Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

consuming, and painstaking work has been done in this direction. The first season of "ASPARA FASHION WEEK" took place from May 10-12, 2018, in Shymkent. Allowing the world to make a name for itself in the global community: the whole world learned about "ASPARA FASHION WEEK.“ The second season of ASPARA FASHION WEEK took place from October 8 to October 12, 2018, in Taraz. This season has managed to glorify Taraz's glorious city, which was the capital of many states and a major trading center of the Great Silk Road. In addition to showing the next new collections, master classes in craft: weaving, craftsmanship, and pottery were held in the second season of ASPARA FASHION WEEK.

The 2nd season of ASPARA FASHION WEEK UZBEKISTAN was held in Tashkent from April 25-29, 2019. The main goal of the II season was to strengthen the friendship between the countries, enrich cultures, attract and promote young budding designers not only from Uzbekistan but also the entire Central Asian region and the entire Turkic world. At the start of the 4th season of ASPARA FASHION WEEK, the 20th anniversary of the Aspara College of Modeling and Business was held. Guests and experts from Kazakhstan, Far and Near Abroad came to celebrate the college's anniversary. According to the results of the first 3 seasons of ASPARA FASHION WEEK, Aidarkhan Camealiev attracted the attention of the world fashion industry and millions of fashion and art lovers from all over the world. Therefore, from 15 to October 17, 2019, the 4th season of ASPARA FASHION WEEK International Fashion Week was held in Taraz. This season brought

together more than 15 fashion experts from Europe and Asia and 20 fashion designers from 10 countries. About Kazakhstan fashion and ASPARA FASHION WEEK wrote in many fashion publications in Europe and Asia (ELLE, Gazeta Italia, etc.), Internet resources, and world TV channels (FNL Network, Worldstyles TV) Now, the next 5 seasons in the city of Taraz from June 25 to 28, 2020. For the first time in the world, it quickly passed the largest in Asia fashion project ASPARA FASHION WEEK online, which is still a platform for the cooperation of many professionals in the fashion industry craftsmanship but also in culture and tourism. In the 5th season, 60 designers from 32 countries and 5 continents took part. In order to prosper the culture of knowledge, preserve national identity, cooperate with foreign partners, every new season of the International Fashion Week "ASPARA Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

FASHION WEEK" is held in different parts of our homeland. Love for the native land, motifs of national music, desire to go only forward inspired Aidarkhan Kovalev to the 6th season of the International Fashion Week ASPARA FASHION WEEK, which took place from October 7 to 12 in the picturesque corner of Kazakhstan Merke. This time, designers from 37 countries took part in one of the fashion industry's biggest events, and about 100 collections were shown. It was a new surge in the world of the fashion industry, a new leap forward, a new achievement, and many well-deserved words of gratitude. In terms of its credibility and level of invited guests, "ASPARA FASHION WEEK" is already put on a par with such fashion weeks as Paris, Milan, New York Fashion Week, Fashion Week Berlin, Shanghai Fashion Week, and Serbia Fashion Week, etc

FASHION Marathon VI of Fashion Week "ASPARA FASHION WEEK - MERCE" stretched for 4 days, all this time, not to surprise with exquisite ideas, original concepts, creativity, and bold exevents, reflecting the entire palette of the modern fashion industry. The extraordinary beauty of dresses, couture collections, insentatinglangiignment and romance, sophistication, restraint, and relaxation, showing that different cultures can coexist peacefully.

All the collections shown were characteristic of different styles, but the first violin in each of them played ethnic motifs. This was the leitmotif of the VI program of the International Fashion Week "ASPARA FASHION WEEK MERKE.“ Thanks to designers such as Aidarkhan Kaliyev, Kazakh national outfits are increasingly gaining recognition from fashionable European critics. It is no secret that the national costume is a way out and everyday clothes, emphasizing the Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

inner individuality and style. Fashion for ethnic style is always relevant. The purpose and talent of Aidarkhan Miralievichare aimed at the benefit of the homeland, building systematic work to popularize the culture, art, and traditions of Kazakhstan in the world community. Along with the formation of stable channels of intercultural exchange. At the same time, the bet is placed on the promotion of contemporary culture and art, both in form and content.

For many years to come, the name of Aidarkhan Kalievwas heard both in the West and in the East. For his solid merits, skill, hard work, and love for the Motherland, in 2015, he was awarded an honorary certificate of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan. In 2019 - a thank-you letter from the Ministry of Culture and Sport of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the majlis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as a thank-you letter from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The ASPARA project was included in the top 20 projects under the social initiative accelerator program implemented by the Kazakhstan Institute of Public Development, RuhaniYayru. The accelerator program aims to create conditions for the formation of Kazakhstan's brands, the entry of such projects to the national and international level. In this direction, the designer Kaliev Aydarkhan Miralievich works in modern fashion, reviving centuries-old unique Kazakh styles and Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

modern fashion traditions. Claiming that our ancestors' national heritage has always existed. Well, Kazakhstan fashion has risen even higher in the direction of a professional, industrial product, which meets international standards. Despite 27 years of experience in the fashion industry, in the world of PR, Aidarkhan Kaliyev is a very simple, modest, discreet person and, at the same time, an exquisite aesthete and patriot of his homeland.

ASVOFF 12 WRAP UP Concept & idea Saif Rahman Sozib Contributor Diane Pernet Paris: November 17, 2020 A Shaded View On Fashion Film, the world's first fashion film festival dedicated to fashion, style, and beauty, celebrated its twelfth edition on its newly branded A Shaded View

on Fashion Film Channel on the FNL Network. The four-day festival went online October 6-9 and remains online until ASVOFF 13 in October 2021. The unprecedented partnership between ASVOFF and the FNL Network introduces an exciting new element to the 12th edition of ASVOFF. Everyone worldwide can watch A

Shaded View On Fashion Film by installing the free FNL Network on their smart device with this link HERE. The four-day line-up counted 36 films in competition, 11 documentaries, 2 out of

competition films, six student films, 15 films in collaboration with Arts thread, the leading digital platform for emerging artists and designers representing 300,000 students in more than 100 countries from over 850 design schools, as well as the FNL Network, a fashion news, and lifestyle network, along with and 68 Lockdown Home Movies about life in quarantine around the globe. The opening day of ASVOFF 12 was the Paris premiere of the film Dos Fridas by Ishtar Yasin, which features Maria de Medeiros as the nurse of Frida Kahlo by interviews with both the director Ishtar Yasin and the actress Maria de Medeiros. The final day of ASVOFF 12 introduced the "Industry Teaâ€? talk series. Roger Avary, President of ASVOFF 12 directorial debut, was Killing Zoe in 1994. He has drawn both universal acclaim (his Oscar-winning collaboration with Quentin Tarantino on Pulp Fiction) and ire (his latest effort, Lucky Day). Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

No matter what emotion he arouses in his audience, indifference is never it. Eric Daman, the Costume Designer of Gossip Girl, welcomed us to his home and discussed life as a stylist working on films and the Gossip Girl tv series. He had such a strong impact on fashion that his past collaborator on Sex and the City references him in the current Emily in Paris series, currently number one in France on Netflix. Maxime Plescia-Buchi is a world-renowned tattoo artist who has inked the likes of Kanye West and FKA Twigs. He is an expert at branding and creative direction and generously offers his advice. Violeta Sanchez is an actress, model, and muse. Her entry into the world of fashion was when she was discovered by Helmut Newton and Yves Saint Laurent at the opening of a play in Paris.

Performance artist Daniel Lismore interviews Tim Yip on his upcoming two feature films, Love Infinity. Yip was the first Chinese to receive an Academy Award for his work as art director and costume designer on

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon by Ang Lee. In addition, Ishtar Yasin gives a talk about her latest film Dos Fridas and Maria Medeiros, on acting. Director Gianluca Matarrese talks about the art of the documentary. All these masters in their fields stay online on the A Shaded View on Fashion Film Channel on FNL Network until October 2021. Along with established names, it is discovering a new generation of filmmakers, not yet on everyone's lips. Still, just about to be, that should perhaps be seen as ASVOFF's greatest contribution to the industry, this year as much as the years that came before. JURY Roger Avary, President of

ASVOFF 12 "A guy who loves movies." That was film critic Roger Ebert's instinctive characterization of Roger Avary upon watching his directorial debut Killing Zoe in 1994. What's more, is there a reverence and integrity to Avary's work ethic, which shines through in his consideration for the work of authors he chooses to adapt. After spending eighteen months trying to transcribe Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels to the screen. He walked away from the project when it became clear the producers' vision would borrow from Gaiman's work but not pay tribute to its specific esthetic sense. Some may be baffled by the diversity of said adaptations – from Bret Easton Ellis' The Rules of Attraction to Silent Hill's Japanese horror games. But there is consistency in Avary's dedication to using his knowledge of the cinematic form and understanding of the source material to find innovative ways to Š Red Silk Carpet Dec 2020

connect the former to the latter. He inaugurated Apple's Final Cut Pro software to edit The Rules of Attraction, efficiently achieving tricky effects such as split screens, once again proving his resourcefulness in interpreting noncinematic art forms in the language of film. Mr. Avary always swings for the fences, and so it is no wonder that he has drawn both universal acclaim (his Oscarwinning collaboration with Quentin Tarantino on Pulp Fiction) and ire (his latest effort, Lucky Day). No matter what emotion he arouses in his audience, indifference is never it. His is a strange, free, ungraspable career that keeps one guessing what he might do next. Whether the film in question turns out to be an audacious reinvention of a 7th-century AngloSaxon poem (Beowulf), or an adaptation of a surrealist play by Jean Cocteau (La Voix Humaine), it often turns out to be a film you never thought you needed but can always remember.
