time to unplug from the daily grind, whether that be work, technology, or social media. Prioritize time in your day to get outside and take a walk, breath in some fresh air, smell a flower, watch a bird, and enjoy the sounds of nature. As you reflect on 2022 and make goals for 2023, discover new classes, hobbies, or volunteering opportunities that you have not made time for in the past. Engage with family and friends and enrich your mental health by taking the time to breathe and enjoying everything the natural world has to offer. 2023 can be a year of fresh beginnings and new adventures. Get out in the parks and explore our great community!
Lastly, we are thrilled to announce that the Alex Fiore Teen Center is open again after a much needed remodel and the addition of a new and improved back yard. CRPD partnered with the City of Thousand Oaks on the project and are excited for the many updates that will serve the needs of the teens now and into the future.
Cheers to finding your fun in 2023!

As a fresh new year starts, I encourage you to put yourself first and make
Technology is integrated into the fabric of our society and it is impossible to avoid, but that does not mean it needs to dominate our lives. Excessive use of electronic devices without breaks can impact our mental and physical health. Being aware of the time we spend in front of screens and making an effort to unplug from them is a great way to remain connected to the natural world and recharge our batteries.
The COVID-19 Pandemic increased screen time on a global scale. According to the CDC, children ages 8-18 spend an average of 7.5 hours in front of a screen using entertainment media, not including time spent on computers for educational purposes. Over the course of one year, that equals 114 days in front of a screen!
According to an annual report on digital trends, by the end of 2021, kids and teens were spending an average of 91 minutes per day watching TikTok and 56 minutes per day watching YouTube. Additionally, the Pew Research Center report that only 6% of men and 4% of women had at least one social media account in 2005 compared to 66% of men and 78% of women in 2021. Prolonged use of electronic devices and social media has been proven to have several negative impacts on our overall health, including blurred vision, neck discomfort, loneliness, increased stress, depression, and a lack of motivation and concentration.
March 4th is National Day of Unplugging, which encourages everyone to take a break from technology for a 24-hour period to unwind and engage in things other than technology. If a 24-hour period seems too difficult, here are a few tips to get you started.
• Track your usage and set screen time limits on your devices
• Plan screen free activities and leave your technology at home
• Take media breaks 1-2 days per week outside of work-related hours
• Identify and designate specific technology-free areas in your home
• Turn off phone notifications for email, social media, and other apps
Any of the above tips, combined with spending more time outdoors in nature can help lead to an increase in energy, improved vitality and focus, and positively affect your overall mood. Spending just 15-20 minutes in sunlight, 3 days per week can increase levels of vitamin D which strengthens the immune system, promotes healthy bones, improves brain function, and helps lower blood pressure and the risk of heart disease. On this National Day of Unplugging, we encourage you to try trading in your cell phones, television, and video games for outdoor recreation, social engagement, and personal discovery.

AMERICAN DISABILITY ACT ( ADA ) COMPLIANCE: MISSION STATEMENT
Conejo Recreation and Park District (CRPD) strives to enrich quality of life through the provision of quality recreation programs. We welcome people with disabilities in all recreation opportunities provided by CRPD, both through specialized options (Therapeutic Recreation) and inclusion alternatives.
Please contact Devon Herbert at 805-495-6471 or Inclusion@crpd.org for further information on program choices, for help with making a selection, or to request a program modification. In order to evaluate and seek to reasonably accommodate your individual needs, we ask that you let us know of any requested modifications at the time of your registration.
ADA GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
CRPD has developed an internal grievance procedure for prompt and equitable resolution of complaints alleging any action prohibited by the United States Department of Justice regulations implementing Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Complaints should be addressed in writing to ADA Compliance Officer, Conejo Recreation and Park District, 403 W. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360 or by email at ADAcompliance@crpd.org
• A complaint should contain the name and address of the person filing it, and briefly describe the alleged violation of the regulations.
• Complaint should be filed within 30 days of the alleged violation.
• CRPD will conduct an investigation and notify the complainant of its findings within 30 days from receiving the written complaint.
Use of this grievance procedure is not a prerequisite to the pursuit of other remedies. CRPD strives to have all participants enjoy their experience in our programs and works to handle all concerns in a timely and fair manner.

A Day in the Life of a COSCA Park Ranger
Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA) is a partnership formed in 1977 between the City of Thousand Oaks and CRPD, each bringing their own special strength to the table in order to coordinate land use planning and policy decisions, and facilitate open space acquisition, management, and conservation. Today, COSCA manages 14,000+ acres of open space and 150 miles of trails.
Throughout this vast open space, COSCA Park Rangers are plying their skills to protect and preserve the fragile environment so that everyone may enjoy it. On a daily basis – 365 days per year - the Park Rangers work hard to educate the public about the value of open space and keep it as accessible and clean as possible. As the sun rises each day, a Park Ranger will head out to open gates and check the restrooms and trash. Other Park Rangers start the day by checking yesterday’s reports – an email from a trail volunteer about a fallen tree, or a small rockslide that is blocking a trail.
The Rangers gather the tools necessary to take care of the day’s tasks. Patrolling by truck or bike, the Park Rangers check on trail conditions and fencing. Along the way, they will talk to park visitors, giving directions, answering questions, or listening to a child talk about a bunny that they saw - a gold badge sticker is often issued at this point. Other tasks for the day may include bench installations, trail construction, weed abatement, V-ditch cleaning, or an Eagle Scout Project. The Park Rangers also work closely with the Fire Department and other emergency personnel to assist in the rescue of hikers, dogs, or others in distress. When there are fires, the Rangers, being the experts on the local terrain, give logistical help to the Fire Department, protecting resources such as endangered plants, archeological sites, and trails. As the sun sets over the Grande Vista Mountain, Rangers go throughout the Conejo Valley and close gates and bathrooms, enjoying the red and orange sunset.
