EVENT TRENDS 2020/21 confettifair.com.au 1

o T e m o c l e THE W TREND-VOLUTION! Can you believe it’s been four years since we started writing about industry trends? The way we party has changed so much in that time. A whole lot of ideas and trends have emerged and gone, and what’s become evident is that a lot of these trends are actually mostly an evolution of previous trends. We see the same process occurring with 2020 party and event trends. A large part of the ideas list on this list are not entirely new. What is new, however, is that they have been infused with a fresh twist before being given time in the spotlight. Eventually, there comes a point in time when the trend becomes an element that’s quickly adopted by others in the industry - taking on a life of its own, gaining its own hashtag and finally laying the foundations for the next trend. Call it the circle of trends. Here’s what’s on our radar for the rest of 2020 and beyond.

WALLS OF EXCELLENCE In 2020/21, the backdrop game is about to get even bigger, with new materials, 3D elements, embellished balloon installs (see page 14), and multi-textured walls all making an impact. The biggest impact though will be made by the emergence of shimmer walls, which make it so easy to create glam effects for your event!

NEON ALL THE WAY The new neon is more than just script letter lighting. In 2020/2021 it will also be used for directional purposes, in the form of arrows and lines, as abstract canopies and teepees, and next-level wall installations. In a departure from the current iteration, neon lighting will be incorporated into giant letters, overtaking marquee lights, combining the two most popular party lighting trends of late.

CURVES AHEAD Everywhere we turn our heads, it seems that arches are popping up in the event world. Initially starting life as a stand-alone backdrop used solo or in multiples (making for gorgeous wave effects). We are now starting to see them expand into signage, or embellished with florals and tassels and even neon form. We cannot wait to see further forms the humble arch takes in 2020/21.

SUPERIOR INTERIORS While we’re no interior experts, we are getting some eclectic vibes from the interiors design world this year. That’s why it should come as no surprise that some decor items reflective of these trends are popping up all over events and parties! Some of the most obvious ones include distressed Persian carpets, terrazzo, rattan and bamboo, as well hanging tassel chandeliers.

NEW BALLOON WALLS Like a beautiful amalgamation of organic garlands and symmetrical balloon walls, the new balloon walls are an exploding cascade of colour and fun, and we’re totally in love! Created in a colour scheme and paired with a variety (albeit similarly themed) of foil balloons, these have been flowing through our feed for a while now. With isolation and small gatherings forcing us to get uber-creative with our parties, these new balloon walls with their sense of fun and mega impact will no doubt continue to dominate the party scene in 2020, 2021 and beyond.

EMBELISH WITH IMPACT With many beautiful cake decorating techniques having emerged in the last few years, it’s no surprise that we are seeing these continue to be used in novel and beautiful ways. Whether combined gracefully, or used minimally, the result is the same – a striking impact, and a beautifully structured design. The faultline, textured stencilling, 3D patterns, perspex additions, or high impact feather arrangements are all elements that achieve this look.

PLATTER CHATTER Uber-creative grazing platters and cutely packaged edibles are two of our favourite things in party food right now! Even though COVID-19 has put a downer on our food sharing traditions, we take comfort in the fact this won’t last forever! Grazing platters have evolved into beautifully designed arrangements featuring sweet and/ or savoury. Additionally, they are becoming even more creative by being themed (see – #pavlovagraze) or made into patterns and images. For something Covid-safe, individually packaged edibles present the perfect solution! Plus, who doesn’t love cute little packages? Imagine, just grab your graze or treats in cute to-go boxes! Perfect for picnics or cocktail style settings – just find a place to rest your tush and enjoy!

COOKIE-MANIA Cookie trends have developed monumentally in the last 5 -10 years. From humble fondant shapes and sprinkles, we now have beautifully stamped and embellished wonders, to elaborate and artistic recreations of faces, objects and even high art in cookie form. Cookies are the ultimate in customisation in a bite-size format! Make no mistake - cookie decorating is definitely an art - and we can’t wait to see much more of it in 2020/21!

SHADES OF BLUE Can there be a colour that we need more right now than blue? One wonders if PantoneÂŽ were on to something by announcing Classic Blue as Colour of the Year. With connotations of cleanliness, calm and tranquillity, planning a blue themed event will be the perfect antidote to the wild roller-coaster that has so far been 2020.

LINE ART Even though we’ve been obsessed with illustration forever, the new, minimalist line art gracing our feed has been giving us real heart eyes! Artful, clean and aesthetically pleasing, the ideas are endless with line art. From freehand drawings and lettering to patterns to abstract lines, many styles can be explored. The simplicity of line art means that this style is suitable for a minimal monochrome look, or even paired with bold and bright colours. We’d really love to see creators run wild with this look in 2020/21!

MONO-COLOUR In a welcome departure (we love colour) from monochrome, ‘mono-colour’ is here and ready to party! Mono-colour is the next level of monochrome! As we abandon ‘skandi’ greyscale schemes, we begin exploring a variety of shades within a colour. This makes for amazing tonal schemes, as well as making it easier to mix and match decor from different manufacuturers! We hope to see these explorations of the colour spectrum explode in 2020/21!

THROWIN’ IT BACK There’s nothing like a new decade to bring on a yearning for sweet memories of days gone by. Throw a massive isolating pandemic into the mix and it’s no wonder that people are exploring nostalgia in parties and gatherings. In addition to disco, we’re seeing mid-century modern vibes, 60s and 70s decor and styling, 90s urban feels and a general eclectic retro vibe all around.

DEDICATED PLAY Long gone are the days where the only option for party play was musical chairs or pass the parcel! Don’t get us wrong, we love those games, but how can we possibly resist an epic jumping castle, or a personalised ball pit to suit your theme? In 2020/21, we expect to see a lot more in the way of dedicated play areas for parties. With consumer tastes becoming ever more refined, these areas will present the next level of styling challenges for party professionals. We can’t wait to see the results!

DISCO PARTIES Disco parties seem to be popping up everywhere lately! Popular for both adults and kids, they truly incorporate all the fun elements of a party – food, music and dancing! Whether retro-inspired, or with a modern vibe, they are one of the party world’s greatest hits. These were already starting to re-emerge in popularity in late 2019. However, with the recent pandemic hitting venues and nightspots hard, we can expect to see an emergence of fun-loving, dance-filled disco parties well into the second half of 2020 and beyond.
