Getting To Know You – As Your New Senior Cantor By Cantor Ida Rae Cahana We all wait for the “lazy” days of summer after the hectic pace of the school year with its work and volunteer obligations which tend to crescendo as the spring unfolds. This summer has none of the “lazy” quality for me; rather, it is an exciting time of transition and newness as I assume the responsibilities of senior cantor here at Congregation Beth Israel. It is an honor to follow Cantor Judith Schiff ‘s remarkable thirty-two year tenure and a pleasure to work with her, as she will continue teaching adults and children studying for Bar and Bat Mitzvah. It is hard to believe that our family moved to Portland six years ago this July. We left a life on the other coast which was full and good (maybe a bit TOO full…) to try a different life together here. And we continue to enjoy every piece of the journey. The Jewish community and the greater Portland community have embraced Michael, me, and our children with openness, curiousity, and warmth. Although you and I are not strangers, we also really do not know each other well. It is through my singing that I have most profoundly felt connected to previous congregations I have served. But here, I have been a “Jew in the pew,” and that has been a remarkable learning experience for someone who started singing on temple bimas at the age of sixteen and never stopped. It is my hope that the listening, observing, and reflecting I have had the opportunity to do over these last years will help me to stretch and grow as your cantor right along

with you. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel beautifully expressed the role of the cantor when he wrote, “The mission of the Cantor is to lead in prayer. [She] does not stand before the Ark as an artist in isolation, trying to demonstrate [her]skill or to display vocal feats. [She] stands before the Ark not as an individual but with a Congregation. [She] must identify [herself ] with the Congregation. [Her] task is to represent as well as to inspire a community.” I pray that I will have many opportunities to connect with each member of this amazing synagogue family. You can help me achieve this by writing or calling when you have news or ideas or feedback to share. And please mark these very important dates to share and celebrate together: Saturday evening, September 8th is the installation of Ida Rae Cahana as Senior Cantor, and on Sunday, November 4th is “Ida Rae and Friends – A Concert of Celebration.” See you soon!

Join Us for an Extra Special and Delicious Shabbat on the Plaza Friday, August 24, 6:00 PM Temple Lawn

The weather guys are predicting a sunny celebration. We are firing up the BBQ for an old-fashioned picnic supper in honor of Pierce Ethier, our devoted facilities manager for the past 40 years and for Ruby too, even thought she has only been on the job for the last 12 years! We aren’t saying good-bye – we are saying l’hitraot and thank you for being such a special part of our congregation, our community, and the lives of our congregants. You will be missed. We wish you all the best! There is no charge for this BBQ supper, but we do need to know if you are coming, so we make sure we have enough hot dogs on the BBQ. Please RSVP to Dara in the Temple office, 503-222-1069, by Wednesday, August 22nd.

Mazel Tov to Deborah Kaplan Welcome to Mor Kenane! CBI is thrilled to welcome Mor Kenane as the newest member of our Education team. Born in Israel, Mor moved to Oregon with her family at age thirteen. Mor is a graduate of Wilson High School and the University of Oregon (all you Duck funs may begin cheering and Beavers fans be nice!) where she studied Economics and Math. Fluent in Hebrew, Spanish, and English, Mor possessesw a love of learning and teaching. This past year, Mor taught for us in our Integrated Hebrew Program and is a gifted young teacher. In addition to her responsibilities as our Education Administrator, Mor will be playing an active role on our youth group advisors team and teaching faculty. It is a pleasure to welcome this talented and caring individual to our community. Please be sure to introduce yourself to Mor next time you are on our campus. She has a lot of people to meet!

It is a great pleasure to announce that Deborah Kaplan has been named as our new Early Childhood Education Director, beginning July 1st. Deborah has been part of CBI’s education program for over 10 years, teaching Kindergarten on Sundays and, most recently, serving as Preschool Curriculum Coordinator and Lead Pre-K Teacher. An amazing teacher with 20 years of classroom experience, Deborah earned a degree in Early Childhood Education from Santa Monica College and her Master’s in Teaching (MAT) with an emphasis on social justice from Lewis and Clark College. Deborah’s leadership and vision for Early Childhood Jewish Education is contagious, as is her energy, passion, and caring for our students and young families. Deborah has been busy coordinating the planning of our Preschool program for the Fall, complete with new classroom space and expanded hours in order to better meet the needs of young families and to increase the amount of quality experiences that can happen for the youngest in our community. A huge mazel tov to Deborah on becoming our new ECE Director and to her whole family - husband Mike Balan and daughter Ilaria - as they prepare to welcome a new member to their family in the coming weeks!

From the Executive Director Every Journey Brings Blessings by Sydney A. Baer Executive Director

Many years ago, I began to collect and give “Pocket Blessings” by Blessings Abound, created by Rabbi Laurie Gross. These messages were short and poignant – a little something to carry in your pocket. “Every journey brings blessings” is so apropos for the journeys that lie ahead for us. This month we welcome Cantor Ida Rae Cahana as our Senior Cantor. While she has been part of our family for six years and part of the CBI team for the past five, she has also been a much sought after performer since her arrival in Portland. We took great pride in our bragging rights when she was invited to sing and record with Pink Martini. Cantor Cahana has been a soloist for Friends of Chamber Music, the 45th Parallel Chamber Ensemble, and other local music groups, including the annual New Year’s Eve concerts organized by our own John Strege at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral from 2006-2010. In her spare time, she also coaches voice students, especially those studying for the cantorate, and was delighted when student cantor and CBI song leader Rayna Dushman sought her mentoring. While she is much admired as “clergy in the community,” she now returns to her truest calling as our cantor. This is such a blessing for our congregants and community, as well as for Cantor Cahana. Her voice is extraordinary and her call to prayer is awe-inspiring. And did I mention her chemistry with our Senior Rabbi – you have to be there to experience it! She is so thrilled to begin this next chapter and share her vision and passion with all of us. She will weave music into everything we do – it is a central part of her being. I hope you will join us for worship, concerts, volunteer choirs and study, and experience this for yourself. Please mark your calendars for a very special installation and welcome on September 8th, as well as the not to be missed “Ida Rae and Friends – A Concert of Celebration” on November 4th. Shalom Rabbi Rachel Joseph, her husband Gabe, and son Max – we are thrilled you are finally here. We are excited to share in this next chapter and your journey as you begin your rabbinate with us. We look forward to welcoming you into our hearts, homes, and community. Please mark your calendars for her installation on Friday, October 6th.

Zionsville, Indiana. Rachel also lived internationally on and off during her childhood, while her father, Rabbi Sam Joseph, consulted in progressive Jewish communities from Australia and Brazil to Hong Kong. She attended Ohio University – Athens, where she majored in Interpersonal Communications with minors in Political Studies and Women’s Studies. After graduation, Rachel worked as a Legislative Assistant at the Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism. She then began working for Americans United for Separation of Church and State, where she stayed for seven years in the Legislative Affairs Department as a lobbyist and Associate Director, until she resigned and began her rabbinic studies at the Jerusalem campus of HUC-JIR in Israel. Rachel was both a Wexner and Tisch Rabbinic Fellow. These are huge honors, given to the best and brightest in the class. Rachel completed her second and third years of studies at the Los Angeles campus of HUC-JIR, where she received her Master’s in Hebrew Letters. While in California, Rachel served congregations in Victorville and Merced, as well as Temple Isaiah of Los Angeles. She then moved back to Cincinnati for her fourth and fifth years of rabbinical school so she could be closer to family. While in Cincinnati, Rachel has served as a chaplain at Cedar Village, a student rabbi in Kokomo, Indiana, and as a rabbinic intern for community organizing for the Union of Reform Judaism, Just Congregations, and the Isaac Meyer Wise Temple. Portland – here she comes! Our only sadness is that Betty Rosenfeld, whose generous gift has helped to underwrite this Assistant Rabbi position, is not here to enjoy the realization of her dream. L’dor v’dor – her gift is such a blessing as we go forward. It is with great pride that we announce that Jemi Kostiner Mansfield, donning her 20 years of service to CBI pin, will be our new Congregational Affairs Director. As I mentioned last month, Jemi has worn many hats in her 20 years at CBI – I think Purim Schpieler just might be one of her favorites. The next leg of her CBI journey continues with the oversight of all of our life cycle events: baby namings, bris, weddings and funerals, and all the life cycle events in-between. Jemi will also assume the oversight for logistics for our facilities and programs and help with communications. Jemi is a remarkable writer and is often my go-to “editor.” Dayenu. Probably one of the best parts of this new chapter and truly a blessing for all will be her role as “clergy wrangler”! Jemi will help manage our clergy, assisting them with their scheduling, programmatic needs, and work with our congregants. With her incredible institutional history, her strong Judaic background, and her ability to seamlessly multi-task, Jemi continues as a very valuable member of our senior staff. Jemi – thanks for saying yes to taking on this new challenge. May you find much gratification on this next leg of your journey. And the transitions continue. Join us in celebration on Friday, August 24th as we thank Pierce Ethier, CBI’s Facilities Manager, for his extraordinary two score years of service to CBI. What a journey – we wish him all the best as he too begins his next chapter. Thank you to Joy Alkalay for hiring him all those many years ago – he has been a blessing. Continued on next page

As some might recall, Rachel Joseph was born in Dayton, OH and was raised in Cincinnati, OH. She was active at Isaac Meyer Wise Temple from a young age until high school graduation, and she spent every summer at the URJ camp Goldman Union Camp Institute in

Social Action

Every Journey Brings Blessings, continued This month we also welcome Craig Paton as our new facilities manager. Craig has hired Drew Christensen to join Andy Coles in our facilities department. Craig has been a quick study as he learns about the complexities and idiosyncrasies of our sacred spaces and historic campus. Craig looks forward to the challenge of managing our facilities, as well as getting to know all of our congregants. While there will be no Ruby in tow, look for the tall guy with the huge heart and smile to match. Welcome Deborah Kaplan and Mor Kenane. Ben recently shared the news of Deborah’s new title and the expansion of her job responsibilities and family, as well as the hiring of our newest education department team member, Mor. And I would be remiss if I didn’t formally welcome Dara Docherty, our new CBI office administrator, friendly voice when you call and welcoming greeter when you visit our CBI offices. Dara joined us as a temporary office fill-in last February. It took us less than two weeks to realize what a find we had, so we were thrilled when she said yes to joining our team. Dara grew up at CBI, is a graduate of our religious school, and was working in our religious school when we hired her to join us full time. She too was a quick study and is also a blessing. And welcome back Rayna Dushman, our Cantorial Intern for the summer. While Rayna grew up in Alaska (she & Mor are both Ducks!) we also feel like we helped raise her at CBI, as she was part of our team for 7 years before beginning her journey to become a Cantor at HUC-JIR School of Sacred Music. Rayna has just completed her second of five years of study. Rayna will be working closely with Cantor Cahana. Wow – I was just re-reading this article, and we have a lot of new batters in our lineup. No benchwarmers here – everyone is integral to our team and mission. With all this new collaborative energy, put on your seatbelt – we are in for some very innovative, thrilling, inspiring and fun times. I can hear Debbie Friedman’s song lechi lach: we are going forward on a journey. While parts will be familiar, we have the opportunity to build upon our extraordinary legacy and create some traditions along the way.

It’s time to fire up the grill! On July 15th, 2012, Beth Israel will host its ninth annual barbecue for residents of NW Tower and Annex, our congregation’s next-door neighbors. This event is very popular with the residents and about 75 attend. Food is supplied by the Social Action Committee and prepared and served by CBI volunteers. The Social Action Committee also provides a variety of door prizes, with emphasis on practical items such as household supplies, kitchen utensils, towels, and socks. A few children’s toys are also included, because there are about 30 kids living in the housing complex. If you want to be part of this mitzvah project, volunteers are needed to shop and to prepare and serve food. Door-prize donations are also welcome. Contact Jane Vereschagin: 503-804-3214 or vereschagin@ msn.com. Your tribute funds at work Thanks to your donations to the social action and food funds in honor of the special people and special occasions in your life, the Social Action Committee was able to send more than $15,000 in the past fiscal year to nonprofit organizations that support our mission of tikkun olam. In June, we sent $500 to Urban Gleaners, $500 to Sunshine Pantry in Beaverton, and $500 to Jewish Family and Child Services.

Developing CBI CBI is proud to announce the establishment of the Jill Newman Slansky Early Childhood Leader Tribute Fund By Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director

Committing to a project is a bold statement - it not only tells you something about the donor and who they are now, but also how they feel about the future. Jill Newman Slansky demonstrates how easy it is to be a philanthropist and enjoy seeing your generosity in action. If you have not already met this terrific woman, let me be sure to introduce her to you. Preferably in person, but for now this will have to do. In 2008 Jill donated a classroom in CBI’s early childhood wing in memory of her parents. At that time, she noted she was compelled to create an entity that was alive and represented the values and ideals passed down to her. As an educator, Jill recognized the need for quality physical space that would encourage and inspire the minds of young children. Since that time, the Harold and Lillian Newman classroom has been filled with young voices excited to experience CBI’s enriching preschool program. Recognizing that these young minds will create the future, Jill wants to help ensure that there is an educator to meet the needs of the children who come through the door. As she stated so succinctly: These young minds will create the future; a strong foundation is essential for them to see their dreams evolve and grow. Space does not allow me to share in detail how Jill came to be a member of CBI - ask her one day, her story may resonate with you. One thing is for sure, Jill values her relationship with our congregation and has certainly demonstrated her commitment to help us nurture Jewish

lives, create Jewish memories and strengthen our Jewish community. Jill is very straightforward when asked why she chooses to be so supportive of CBI: CBI has afforded me the opportunity to renew and enrich my religious and spiritual beliefs. Even after two very generous donations to CBI, Jill does not really see herself as a philanthropist. In her mind, philanthropists are very wealthy and can afford to build monuments and buildings. Jill puts it simply when she says: I am looking for a way to prove that my life has made a difference to others. Jill is establishing this Tribute Fund to pay forward the gifts that have filled her life with so many opportunities. She notes it was the generosity of others that helped her realize her aspirations of higher education, becoming an educator, and fulfilling many other dreams along the way. Kind, generous, caring, intelligent, spiritual, and passionate about things that matter to her are just a few ways to describe Jill Slansky, and when she smiles at you with those bright blue eyes you know you have met the real deal. Jill agreed to establish this Tribute Fund so others with similar interest could also contribute. Proceeds from this fund will help support the Lead Position for CBI’s Early Childhood Program.

Can You Hear Us Now?

Thank you to Rita and Bob Philip for their generous gift enabling CBI to install a state of the art sound system in the main sanctuary in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary. They continue the tradition taught to them by their parents of celebrating milestones by sharing and giving gifts that benefit others. Our congregation has been fortunate in the past to be the recipient of designated gifts from the Philip family marking previous special occasions. We are so appreciative that Rita and Bob have decided once again to honor CBI in such a fitting manner. Their generosity will enable all of us to hear a bit more clearly now. Mazel Tov on reaching 40 united years - may there be many more joyous occasions for you to celebrate. Thank you for sharing your love with us and for all you do for our CBI family.

Jews Next Dor Collecting Stuffed Animals In partnership with our young adults group, Jews Next Dor, Congregation Beth Israel will be collecting new stuffed animals to donate to the Ronald McDonald House Charities at summer Shabbat on the Plaza services and throughout the month of October. If you have ever visited one of the Ronald McDonald houses in the Portland area and received a tour, you might have noticed that in their guest rooms they set a stuffed animal on each bed for the families that come to stay at their homes. These animals provide comfort for many of the guests and see countless patients through cancer treatments

to clean bills of health. With their numerous visitors each year, the Ronald McDonald House is in constant need of stuffed animals. Please donate to this wonderful cause and give families a friend to hold on to during a difficult time in their life. Begin looking for specially marked bins at Congregation Beth Israel and help us make this a successful event. For more information on this stuffed animal drive or other Jews Next Dor social action events, contact Mandolyn Koberstein at Mandolyn.Koberstein@gmail.com.

Remembering Your Loved Ones on the CBI Memorial Wall A yahrzeit plaque is a lasting tribute that ensures the memory of a loved one will be honored for all time. The purchase of a yahrzeit plaque guarantees a permanent fixture in the sanctuary plus a duplicate plaque for Pollin Chapel. The cost for a single name is $2,000; two names may be inscribed for $2500. Please contact Pierce Ethier at 503-222-1069 if you would like more information about this tradition.
