SOCIAL ACTION COMMUNITY OUR LEADERSHIP
Rabbi Emanuel Rose (z”l) October 20, 1931-February 7, 2020
Rabbi Emanuel Rose, Religious Leader and Social Justice Advocate Excerpted from The Oregonian
Rabbi Emanuel Rose, a powerful voice for social justice who led Oregon’s largest synagogue for nearly a half-century, died peacefully on Feb. 7, surrounded by family. He was 88. Rose was known as a forceful preacher within his congregation and a strong advocate on social justice issues in Portland and across the state. As Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel from 1960 to 2006, Rose played a central role in building bridges between Jewish, Catholic, Muslim and other faith communities. “He brought together divergent communities in a way that hadn’t been done in Portland,” said Congregation Beth Israel Senior Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana, Rose’s immediate successor at the Northwest Portland synagogue. Rose focused heavily on building relationships between Jewish and Catholic communities, a theme of his doctoral studies. In the 1980s, then-Archbishop William Levada of the Archdiocese of Portland joined in a prayer service at Temple Beth, believed to be the first instance of a U.S. bishop participating in prayer at a Jewish temple. Rose became the first rabbi to lecture at a Catholic college in America when he lectured at the University of Portland. Catholic and Jewish congregations worked together to establish the Oregon Holocaust Memorial in Portland’s Washington Park in 2004. “His relationship with the Catholic Church and the archdiocese was singular and extraordinary,” said Rose’s son, Rabbi Joshua Rose of Congregation Shaarie Torah in Northwest Portland. Emanuel Rose was born in Jamaica, in New York City’s borough of Queens, on Oct. 20, 1931 to Abraham and Mary Rose. His father was a rabbi, part of a family lineage that now includes at least six generations of rabbis.

Rose attended the University of Cincinnati and earned a masters and a doctorate of Hebrew Letters from Hebrew Union College, also in Cincinnati. Following his ordination, he served as Assistant Rabbi at Temple Emanu-El in New York. He married Lorraine Wilson in 1960 in London before moving to Portland at age 29 to lead Congregation Beth Israel, the state’s oldest and largest Jewish congregation. Rose quickly made his mark. “He had a booming voice from pulpit,” said Cahana, his successor. “He was a classic preacher who took his responsibility very seriously.” Rose also engaged the congregation in the social issues of the day, raising his voice on moral issues including opposition to the Vietnam War, advocacy for civil rights and gay rights, and other social justice issues. He hired Oregon’s first woman rabbi. Rose was a leader in opposing Ballot Measure 9, a polarizing statewide anti-gay initiative, in 1992. Rose also was a fierce advocate for Israel and engaged in the complex political issues of that region. Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat who is a member of Congregation Beth Israel, said Rose would contact him frequently whenever the federal government took action that he believed would hurt poor and vulnerable people. “Rabbi Rose worked each and every day to root out injustice wherever he found it,” Wyden said. Rose’s work, Wyden said, “leaves an unshakeable legacy for all of us to build upon.” Oliver, Gordon (2020, February 7). The Oregonian. OUR LEADERSHIP
Rabbi Emanual Rose – Rabbi of the Generations by Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana Senior Rabbi We are fortunate to be part of a congregation with such a long and grand history. Since before the founding of the State of Oregon, Congregation Beth Israel has been a leading voice of Reform Judaism in our region. Among its rabbis over more than 160 years have been powerful advocates for Justice and Freedom of the pulpit, typified by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise (1874-1949) who led our congregation from 1900-1906 and went on to become one of the most famous rabbis of his era. Less than half a century later, a young and brash rabbi from New York took on the mantle of leadership for our congregation. Rabbi Emanuel Rose would go on to serve as Senior Rabbi here for 46 years (1960-2006), more than twice as long as any other rabbi in our history.
Rabbi Rose was well known in our community for his outspoken commitment to Civil Rights, opposition to the Vietnam War, dedication to LGBTQ rights, and love of Israel. Less well known outside our congregation was his love of music and traditional chazzanut (Cantorial chanting). He hired the first professional cantor in Oregon, Cantor Judith B. Schiff, and helped shape our congregation’s continuing emphasis on the power of Jewish music in our worship. Rabbi Rose was also a champion of the young Debbie Friedman, who helped revolutionize new musical forms of Jewish prayer as we have come to appreciate them. The passing of Rabbi Emanual Rose also marks the end of a long era typified by the “Three Rabbis” who helped shape Jewish Portland as we know it today: Rabbi Yonah Geller (1920-2007), Rabbi Joshua Stampfer (1921-2019) and Rabbi Emanuel Rose (1931-2020) represented three Movements of Judaism, three
synagogues of Portland and three approaches to the goal of building up the Jewish community of Portland. They were the builders and shapers during a time of community growth, institutional creation, and significant creativity. Their work will bear fruit for generations. The Talmud (Taanit 23a) tells the story of a certain man, known as Honi, who found an old man planting a tree which would not bear fruit for 70 years. Questioning the wisdom of such effort for a result he would never see, the old man replied to Honi “Just as my ancestors planted for me, I too am planting for my descendants.” The trees which Rabbi Rose, and his colleagues, planted in our rich soil will give fruit for generations to come. May their roots grow deep and their branches reach the sky. May our Portland Jewish community, and all who work for justice, continue to thrive and be blessed.
Countdown to Camp by Ben Sandler, RJE Education Director It’s February and that means if you haven’t already, it’s time to secure a spot at one of the amazing Jewish summer camps in the beautiful Pacific Northwest or at a URJ specialty camp! Spots are already filling up in camps so I encourage everyone who is thinking about enrolling in Jewish camps to do so soon. If you have already enrolled your kids in Jewish camp then you are in the enviable position of your kids looking forward to a great experience meeting amazing new friends in a uniquely Jewish environment! CBI is delighted to be hosting on campus again this summer BB Day Camp Portland. The camp runs from June 30th to August
21st for rising pre-kindergarten-sixth grade kids as well as opportunities for rising seventh-eighth grade kids offered in the third and eighth weeks. If the plan is to be in Portland this summer I highly encourage you to check out BB Day camp. The Clergy and I will often help lead an end of week Shabbat celebration and we love staying in touch with the kids and having fun in this wonderful setting and seeing families during the summer months. Check out bbcamp.org/portland/ for more information and to register. For overnight camping experiences many of our CBI kids attend either BB Overnight Camp located near the beautiful Oregon coast (bbcamp.org/summer-camp/) or URJ Camp Kalsman (campkalsman.org) located north of Seattle in 300 acres of woods. In addition to these great camps located here in the Pacific Northwest, The Union
of Reform Judaism has been opening specialty Jewish camps for kids really focused on a specific area such as sports, technology , or the arts. These camps can really be an excellent fit for kids depending on interests and also an opportunity to venture out beyond the PNW. URJ specialty camps which I encourage you to explore include: URJ 6 Points Creative Arts Academy, PA, URJ 6 Points Sci-Tech Academy (East&West), URJ 6 Points Sports Academy (NC&CA), and Sci Tech Israel! For information on these URJ specialty camps check out www.urjyouth.org/programdirectorytype/specialty-camp/. Let’s go Camping! L’shalom, Ben

Lyla Esther Wohlgemuth Lyla Esther Wohlgemuth will become a Bat Mitzvah on March 6. The daughter of Arah Erickson and Erik Wohlgemuth, Lyla hails from over five generations of Oregonians and New Yorkers. Lyla has two younger sisters, Lindsey and Ruby, and four grandparents: Harriet Wohlgemuth of Bronxville NY, Arthur and Margie Erickson, and Kenneth Margolis of Portland, OR. A seventh grader at Catlin Gabel, Lyla loves playing on the school and Athena Club volleyball teams. She is musically inclined, and is a budding piano player, novice ukulele strummer, and a member of the Portland Symphonic Girls Choir. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, reading, and more reading, spending time with friends, expressing herself through art, and awaiting the start of sleep away camp, perhaps her favorite place on earth. To honor the achievement of her Bat Mitzvah, Lyla is sharing her love of reading by supporting The Children’s Book Project. The organization’s mission is to create a more socially just world by giving free books to children who need them for equity in literacy, learning, and life. Lyla is collecting literature for the organization that is popular with today’s kids (e.g., Harry Potter) but is rarely donated, as well as volunteering her time there. Lyla hopes that her efforts may expose other kids in our community to the beautiful world of books that she enjoys and loses herself in whenever possible.
Shai Adam Kirshner Gerard Shai Adam Kirshner Gerard will become a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, April 18. Shai is the son of Ronit and Craig Gerard and has a younger brother, Micah. Shai’s grandparents are

Ruth Kirshner of Beaverton, OR, and Joan and Neil Gerard of Upland, CA. He is a seventh grader at Jackson Middle School. Shai loves to play sports, especially soccer and ultimate Frisbee. For his Mitzvah Project, Shai has elected to raise funds and awareness for the Humane Society. He chose this project because when he lived in Senegal, he constantly witnessed neglected stray dogs and cats without any owner. He does not want to see a similar situation in Portland, so he’ll be collecting donated treats, toys, food, and beds, to give to the Humane Society to raise awareness about pet adoption.
Alicia “Ali” Koplan Alicia “Ali” Koplan will become a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, April 25. Ali is the daughter of Michelle and Loren Koplan, and she has a doting younger sister, Lizzie. Ali’s grandparents are Richard (Ellen (z’’l) and Laurel Oziel and Leland and Renie Waltuck; her great-grandmother is Lisl Gold. Ali is a fourth generation native Oregonian and takes great pride in her long family history. Ali is a seventh grader at Mountain View Middle School. She is an excellent student and enjoys math. Ali is compassionate, loving, and truly cares deeply about everyone. She is an All-Star Competitive Cheer Athlete, enjoys surfing, and she loves to spend time with her friends. Ali’s second home is BB Camp, where she spends her summers immersed in transformative Jewish experiences. For her Mitzvah Project, Ali has chosen to raise funds to help feed food insecure and hungry children through the summer food services program at BB Day Camp Lincoln City and at three offBB Camp-site locations in Lincoln City. Please join Ali in reaching her goal by donating today at https://bbcamp.org/ donate-now/.

He is a seventh grader at Sellwood Middle School and enjoys reading, practicing on his clarinet, and playing chess, and playing ultimate Frisbee and video games in his spare time. In addition, Alex has participated in Boy Scouts for almost two years and reached the rank of First Class. For Alex’s Mitzvah Project, he is choosing to raise community awareness about Stone Soup PDX. Stone Soup is a non-profit organization and café that provides “life skills and hands-on culinary expertise to people who are at risk of homelessness”. The participants receive training to get jobs in the food service industry. Alex is interested in supporting Stone Soup by spreading the word about and raising funds for the organization.
Elijah Vennebush Eli Vennebush is in seventh grade at Sellwood Middle School. He will become a Bar Mitzvah on May 2. He moved to Portland with his family in August 2019 from Washington, DC. He is the son of Nadine Block and Patrick Vennebush and the grandson of Zelda and Julian Block. He will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah with his twin brother, Alex. Eli enjoys eating sushi, playing ultimate Frisbee and chess, doing math, and reading. He has earned multiple medals and trophies in various national math

competitions. For his Mitzvah Project, Eli will be fundraising for and supporting Stone Soup PDX, a recently opened organization in the Pearl District that works to prevent homelessness through job training in the foodservice industry and supports other groups that work to end homelessness. He wants to make the world a better place by joining this effort.
Beck Alan Capen Beck Alan Capen will become a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, May 16. Beck is the son of Jeff Capen and Kira Dennison Capen and has a younger sister Blythe. His grandparents are Marsha and Barry Kahan of Houston, TX, David and Ceci Capen of Sisters, OR and Allura Dennison of Grapevine, TX. A seventh grader at All Saints School, Beck likes skateboarding and playing tennis. In his spare time, he enjoys hanging out with his friends at the skate park, playing video games, and eating tacos with his family. For his Mitzvah Project, Beck has decided to extend his involvement with Boards for Bros, a non-profit dedicated to helping build and distribute skateboards to kids who don’t have the opportunity to engage with the sport. Please assist Beck in reaching his goal of collecting funds to buy the pieces of skateboards, assemble them, and to then distribute them to kids by contributing at www.gofundme.com/f/beck-barmitzvah-boards-for-bros.

COMMUNITY
Social Action at CBI CBI Mitzvah Day
NW Towers
On Sunday, April 26, we’ll have the opportunity to be together as a spirited multigenerational and multifaceted group to work on a variety of service projects. Watch CBI communications for updates.
At NW Towers, Homework Club providing tutoring and social opportunities for the kids at NW Towers is now two afternoons each week. Our number of students has increased and we have recently added several new CBI volunteers as tutors. Thanks to all who are supporting this activity. We are continuing to be partners in the Sunday Food Pantry which provides a vital food resource for many of the residents. Our connection with our neighbors at NW Towers is through Lift Urban Portland’s “Adopt a Building” program.
Immigration/Refugee Support We are continuing our mentoring and support of an Eritrean refugee family. Tutoring has helped the 12 yr old daughter on her way to fluency in English and reading. This work is in partnership with Catholic Charities. We are also connecting to the Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice (IMIrJ) for training to accompany immigrants who are facing detention and deportation. We worked with Mercy Corps to bring “Displaced” a refugee simulation workshop to the CBI campus, broadening our community’s understanding of global refugee crisis.
Gun Violence Prevention In December many of our congregants signed the petitions supporting Lift Every Voice Oregon’s proposed ballot measures regulating the sale of semiautomatic assault Firearms and limiting the manufacturing and sale of large-capacity magazines. This was a first step towards the November 2020 Oregon Ballot. This spring we plan to participate in gathering the additional large number of signatures required to move these initiatives forward. Please watch for training opportunities to help with this ongoing effort.
Sisterhood Sisterhood continues to lead our work in the area of Reproductive Health and Rights. To help improve the lives of women in need there is an ongoing drive for menstrual products for the women of the Somali American Council of Oregon.
Allocations Due to the generosity of donors to CBI’s Social Action General Tribute Fund and the Social Action Food Fund we are able to distribute funds to organizations doing social justice work including hunger relief. Our process for soliciting and reviewing requests for allocations was revised in the past year. Applications for grants are now available on the CBI website. We have begun the process for reviewing requests for the fiscal year.
Interfaith Alliance on Poverty Beth Israel is a member of the Alliance and hosted the February monthly meeting. Approximately 50 people attended. Speakers were Nan Stark from the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability and Rev. Andy Goebel of Portsmouth Union Church. The topic of discussion was the complexities faced by faith based groups wanting to build affordable housing on their properties. The story of Rev. Goebel’s small congregation working towards this goal was inspiring and enlightening. All CBI members are welcome to attend meetings of the Alliance.
Lift Urban Portland Christmas Dinner Thanks to all who participated. Over two hundred volunteers were part of the team creating this CBI hosted celebration. Smiles and gratitude were in abundance as our guests enjoyed their delicious holiday dinners in a festive and warm gathering of community. We served approximately 330 in Goodman Hall. Another 220 received home delivered meals. Special thanks to Josh Kashinsky, to the CBI facilities staff, to our volunteer head chef Susan Milstein and to the Knit A Mitzvah Group.
Project Lemonade Project Lemonade, which provides clothing at no cost to kids in foster care, was the recipient of our December Coat Drive. Government funds to provide clothing for this group of kids are almost nonexistent. Each year Project Lemonade gives approximately 2000 kids living in foster care the opportunity to choose clothing in their Lloyd Center Store. We look forward to an ongoing partnership. Participation in the Social Action Committee and Subcommittees is open to all members of the CBI community. For Social Action Committee meeting dates and times, see p. 7. For details on Mitzvah Day, see p. 6.
Sisterhood is Taking Action on Reproductive Health and Justice! Please continue to bring period products to CBI to support our ongoing menstrual product drive to support the Somali American Council of Oregon. Drop off small boxes of tampons, pads, or menstrual cups in the newly decorated collection boxes located by the gift shop or in the main office. Sisterhood Social Action will hold monthly video conference calls from 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM on the first Tuesday of the month. These monthly calls will include an education component, as well as advocacy alerts, service opportunities, and event planning that

focuses on pertinent women’s issues. For more information, contact sisterhood social action co-chairs, Susan Berniker (susan.elaine@comcast.net) or Robin McAlpine (robinapdx@gmail.com). Todah Rabah: The Somali American Council of Oregon appreciated the donation of over 180 period products organized by CBI sisterhood member Terri Warren and the Oregon Airstream Club.

Community Happenings (Canned) Corn as High as an Elephant’s Eye!
CBI Cemetery Flowers
March 9 at the Purim Schpiel, let’s kick up our heels and kick off Mitzvah Day in true Oy-klahoma style. Bring canned food and nonperishible staples with you when you come for the Schpiel and Megillah reading so we can wow our partners at Sunshine Pantry with a stack of canned corn (and other staples) that’s “as high as an elephant’s eye!”
If your loved one is interred in our cemetery, we now offer the opportunity to order flowers to be delivered on a biweekly basis to their gravesite. Please contact Emily at emily@bethisrael-pdx.org if you are interested in learning more.

A Message From Glen Levy, CBI President
We have been hearing from several congregants concerns about security on our campus. Recent events, such as the increase nationally in anti-Semitic acts, and tragic occurrences of violence in synagogues, churches and mosques have us all on edge. Please know that CBI is in close consistent communication with our local law enforcement and our Jewish Community security director. Our Security Committee is evaluating policies, enhancing procedures, and making appropriate investments based on the recommendations of experts. We are working diligently at evaluating best practices as suggested by law enforcement professionals, synagogues, and other houses of worship. There is no one simple solution to keeping our campus safe. But together we can find the best use of resources and policies to balance our desire for safety with our commitment to being a welcoming community. If you are interested in participating in this conversation, including serving on our Security Committee, please contact me or our Executive Director Josh Kashinsky - josh@BethIsrael-pdx.org.

MITZVAH DAY Sunday, April 26, 9:00 AM CBI Campus (and beyond!)
Make a difference, build community, and have a blast! We’ll have projects for volunteers of all ages both on campus and with partners throughout the Portland area. Whether you’re serving brunch to our neighbors at NW Towers, stocking food for Sunshine Pantry, or beautifying our Beth Israel Cemetery, your efforts honor the spirit of both tikkun olam (fixing the world) and tzedakah (giving to charity). Be on the lookout for the Mitzvah Day signup in the weekly Beneath the Dome and Parent Nus email blasts. Questions? Email SAC@bethisrael-pdx.org.
Affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism since 1879
Make everyday a Mitzvah Day!
