Our Leadership

Benjamin Aiden Glover

Return to Rededication – A Fall Journey from High Holidays to Chanukah

Benjamin Aiden Glover will become a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, December 31st. Benjamin is the son of Brian and Tamara Glover, younger brother of Isaac and Declan and older brother of Emmalena. Benjamin is a 7th grade student at Lakeridge Jr. High School in Lake Oswego. He enjoys sports, especially football where he excells at defensive end, left tackle and tight end, scoring three touchdowns this last season! For his Mitzvah Project, Benjamin has decided to raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Benjamin was inspired by a young man whose wish was to be Batman for a day and it has inspired him to try and help those children not as fortunate as himself.

by Cantor Ida Rae Cahana Senior Cantor The calendar year is drawing to its close; a time when many of us think about what is to come. I like to reflect through a Jewish lens and in doing so, offer this to you:

Ike Cavan Salinsky Ike Cavan Salinsky will become Bar Mitzvah on December 31st. He is the son of Michael and Linda Salinsky, and younger brother of Ethan. Ike is a 7th grader at West Sylvan Middle School, avid reader, and plays baseball and soccer on Lincoln junior teams. For his Mitzvah Project, Ike will raise money for, and volunteer at, the Oregon Humane Society.

UPCOMING EVENTS: CBI Book Group Sunday, December 4, 9:00 AM Shirley and Herbert Semler Board Room Like good books and great company? Join the CBI Book Group for both. We’ll discuss They May Not Mean To, But They Do by Cathleen Schine. Want to get a head start on January’s read? Grab a copy of B.A. Shapiro’s The Muralist and enjoy!

Jews on the Frontier of Sports Wednesday, December 14, 7:00 PM Pollin Chapel Presenters: Harry and Marshall Glickman The list of Jews who have shaped the business of sports is legendary—David Stern (former NBA Commissioner), Bud Selig (former MLB Commissioner), Gary Bettman (NHL Commissioner), Mark Cuban (Mavericks owner), Roman Abromovich (Chelsea owner), Al Davis (former Raiders owner), Jerry Reinsdorf (Bulls & White Sox Owner) – and longtime CBI member and community member Harry Glickman, the father of professional sports in Oregon. Harry, together with his son Marshall, will present their take on how sports became a way out of poverty for many Jewish immigrants, and how so many Jews rose to become the catalysts of the future of sports in America.

On Yom Kippur as the ten days of introspection and soul accounting ended, we sang, “Return again; return to the land of your soul.” Our community gathered in need of hope and inspiration and the comfort that comes with sitting with others in our community, sometimes in the same seats your family sat in for generations; sometimes with people who welcomed you as a newcomer to their temple family. On the heels of this deeply meaningful and happy congregational reunion came the harvest festival holidays of Sukkot and Simchat Torah. We ate together under the Sukkah, then danced with the Torah scrolls in celebration of life’s possibility and the joy of Jewish learning. Now, we approach the festival of lights, coinciding this year with the Christmas holiday. Chanukah this year will come just a few days after winter solstice; the nadir of light. Chanukah is primarily associated with a time for being together with family and friends; telling the story of the fight for religious freedom and the miracle of the menorah with its tiny bit of oil lasting for eight days. This year, the lunar calendar has done us a favor in placing Chanukah after the darkest, shortest day of the year. As the light of each day slowly increases, we will amplify that increasing brightness with every candle we light. Chanukah actually means rededication. As much as we all want to feel there will be more and more light in the world, we need to rededicate ourselves to the task of making it so. And the many ways in which we each can do the good we long to do can be found in concert with others. This year, we are offering a pre-Chanukah service and party on Friday night December 16th where we will learn about the holiday’s meaning and experience different ways of celebrating. There will be opportunities to reflect, to eat, to dance, to rededicate ourselves to doing mitzvot. A recap of our new Jewish year thus far. Bring your inquisitive hearts, appetite (and money for the food carts), dancing shoes, and zip lock bags (quart and gallon size) or rolls of paper towels to benefit Lift Urban Portland. Let us truly add to the light of Chanukah as we rededicate ourselves to what is precious and most dear: our loved ones, our CBI community, our beautiful world. Chanukah Sameach Happy Chanukah! Cantor Ida Rae Cahana

Community Hineinu Presents…Countdown to CBI Shares Shabbat Friday, February 3 will find us all connecting with new friends, reconnecting with old ones, lighting candles, saying prayers, and bringing all generations together to explore the meaning of Shabbat as Hineinu presents CBI Shares Shabbat. No worries if you haven’t had Shabbat in your home; whether you know a little or a lot, CBI can help you prepare with programming throughout the winter. Rabbi Joseph and congregant Rob LaForte will lead programs about Shabbat, at 10 AM on Sunday, December 4 and Sunday, January 22. Join them for discussion ranging from Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s view of the observance of Shabbat as the sanctification of time and our place in it, to what it means to celebrate Shabbat and how to do it. Additionally, Cantor Cahana will offer a special CBI Shares Shabbat music class on December 4 from 12:00-1:00 after Religious School. In December and January, we will also hold challah baking classes to sharpen our culinary skills; look for dates and times in Beneath Our Dome. Other topics we anticipate covering include the howto’s of creating a Shabbat table, challah-making, and preparing both Ashkenazi and Sephardic Shabbat meals.

We are excited for this event and hope you are too. Please visit the CBI Shares Shabbat Facebook Page to find links to all of the basics of how to celebrate Shabbat: the prayers for candle lighting and the blessings over the bread and wine, plus songs, recipes, and tips on being Shabbat hosts and guests. Use our resources to create your own personal Shabbat style; there’s no one-size-fits-all… individuality is encouraged! On the CBI Website, you will find an online sign-up for CBI Shares Shabbat, so please sign up soon, whether as a guest or as a host. As you join the whole CBI community in preparing for this event Please keep in mind that our beautiful Sisterhood Gift Shop is well stocked with everything you’ll need to enhance your Shabbat celebration, from candles and lovely candlesticks, challah covers and plates to children’s book. Working together, both inside and outside the dome, we are creating ways in which our congregants can find connections, create relationships and nurture and support one another and build community. At CBI we are saying, Hineinu, We are here, here together!

WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood honored with 2016 Kavod Award

The CBI Brotherhood, far from being a clandestine organization as some may suspect, is actively looking for new members to help engage in community service and social activities.

by Lynn Gelber WRJ/BI Sisterhood President

Some of our projects include:

Kavod means to honor and respect. Kavod awards are given to honor outstanding programs, fundraisers, community service, social action, and PR projects. Kavod awards are given by WRJ Pacific District for different programs put on throughout the past two year period by sisterhoods across the district. We submitted two applications for a Kavod Award, one for our Library Rejuvenation and the other for “Oy Vey it’s Mother’s Day” fundraiser. Imagine my excitement when they were reading the winner of the Fundraising Kavod Award and I realized it was CBI Sisterhood’s “Oy Vey it’s Mother Day.” We had come up with this idea in order to raise additional funds for our new Machzor for High Holidays. People could buy bookplates that would be put into the books to honor someone they loved. We thought it was a great idea for someone who didn’t know what to get their mother for Mothers Day and still give to the Congregation. Not only were we successful in obtaining our goal to purchase over five hundred books, our WRJ Pacific District honored us by recognizing this a great program. I want to thank Stephanie Siegel, our Immediate Past President, for this wonderful idea, as well the women of Sisterhood who helped make this program a success, and all the congregants who purchased bookplates.

• A dministering the Brotherhood Café in Blumauer Auditorium on Sundays • Organizing Blazer games and rafting trip outings • Setting up and taking down the Sukkah • Helping with ushering on the High Holidays • Scheduling probability seminars (low-stakes poker playing) The Brotherhood is also active in advocacy. In September, we took the extraordinary step of asking Jewish men to step up in the fight against child sex trafficking. The presentation brought together several speakers, including local law enforcement, the founder of the country’s first all-men anti-trafficking group, and a trafficking survivor. For those who would like more information or to get involved in on-going efforts for prevention, please contact Ketzel Levine of the Portland Jewish Response Group at ketzel.levine@gmail.com. When you are part of the Brotherhood new friendships are established, support for Jewish community is realized, and Jewish traditions are strengthened. We can enrich each other’s lives if only we take the time to get to know each other. To join, please mail a check for $36 payable to CBI and send it to the office with your preferred contact details.

It takes a village.

Lift Urban Portland’s Holiday Dinner Volunteer Opportunities Sunday, December 25, Goodman Hall

Every year for the past 30 or so years, Congregation Beth Israel has hosted a community holiday dinner. This year the dinner is on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25, from 11:30 AM until 1:30 PM. Many volunteers generously offer their time to ensure a festive event for the guests. In fact, more than 100 volunteers join hands to serve close to 600 dinners. Volunteers are needed before, during and after the dinner: to prepare and decorate, fill gift bags, greet our guests, serve meals, and clean up. You can sign up at: www2.mysignup.com/liftupdinner2016. Thank you.

Please help make the holiday season merry for the 20 or so children who are our neighbors at NW Tower & Annex. We will provide a link in the weekly Beneath our Dome email.

On the first night only we add: Ba-ruch a-ta A-do-nai, Eh-lo-hei-nu meh-lech ha-o-lam, she-heh-cheh-ya-nu, v’ki-y’ma-nu, v’higi-anu, la-z’man ha-zeh. We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe: who has kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season.
