The lives of Dr. Geneva Craig and Mary Liuzzo Lilleboe were joined as teenagers in Selma, Alabama. Geneva was attacked on Bloody Sunday as she marched on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Mary lost her mother, Viola Liuzzo, who was murdered by the KKK at the end of the Selma to Montgomery March. Together Geneva and Mary use their personal stories to inspire us today to fight for justice.

Ira MacNaughton Smith Ira MacNaughton Smith will become Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, January 14, 2017. Ira is the son of Libby Schwartz and David Smith. He has a older sibling, River. Ira’s grandparents are CBI congregants Dana and Jerry Schwartz, Jean Kerr Schwartz (z’l), and Beverly and David Smith of Fredericksburg, Texas. A 7th Grader at Lake Oswego Junior High, Ira likes playing tennis, soccer, and baseball. In his spare time he is active in Boy Scouts and also enjoys playing the game Magic. For his Mitzvah Project, Ira is supporting Portland Tennis & Education (PT&E), an organization that serves mostly poorer and underprivileged children to become better scholars, with programming from kindergarten through high school. “I play and love tennis,” Ira says. “For my Mitzvah Project, I am supporting Portland Tennis & Education, a St. Johns-based educational program that incorporates tennis into the school day. As a result, PT&E has a killer tennis team, which my MAC team has played a handful of times. PT&E serves mostly poorer and underprivileged children, and the program really is one of a kind. Please help me support them by making a monetary donation.”

Jews and the Spanish Civil War: On the Frontier of the Fight Against Fascism Wednesday, February 1, 7:00 PM Pollin Chapel Presenters: Ron Silver, Eric Kimmel, and Jeff Kisseloff Ron Silver, Eric Kimmel, and Jeff Kisseloff will relate the history of the first war to confront fascism (1936-1939) and the American Jews who volunteered to fight for the Spanish Republic in the Abraham Lincoln Battalion of the International Brigade. The typical American volunteer was Jewish and was often a communist, a trade unionist, or a student at the City College of New York. Fascist General Franco, supported by Hitler and Mussolini, prevailed and American volunteers received a cold welcome on their return to an America not yet ready to recognize the danger of fascism. As background, consider reading the recently published history “Spain in Our Hearts,” by Adam Hochschild, which describes the experiences of individual American volunteers.

Jews on the Frontier of Sports Rescheduled for weather - Mark your calendars for May 24! Pollin Chapel Presenters: Harry and Marshall Glickman
The list of Jews who have shaped the business of sports is legendary. Harry Glickman tops that list. Join congregants Harry and Marshall Glickman as they present their take on how Jewish athletes and executives became the catalysts for the future of sports in America. Harry Glickman is one of the founders of the Portland Trail Blazers, and was the team’s president from 1987 to 1994. Harry is considered the “father” of professional sports in Oregon. Harry’s son Marshall Glickman is also a former president of the Portland Trail Blazers and has served as a full-time consultant for Euroleague Basketball in Barcelona, Spain. Marshall is one of the few sports business executives who has been intimately involved with both of the world’s leading professional basketball leagues.

CBI Shares Shabbat Friday, February 3 Imagine how incredible it will be when on one specific night 850 families share Shabbat together and celebrate the biggest Shabbat in CBI’s history. We are asking all our congregants to participate in Shabbat in our homes, either as a host or a guest; with people we know or have just met; with our children and grandchildren; our friends and neighbors. We will all experience the joys of Shabbat together, lighting candles, sharing food, saying prayers, and creating community as Hineinu presents CBI Shares Shabbat. Whether you have previously experienced celebrating Shabbat in your home or not, we invite you to help prepare for CBI Shares Shabbat with a variety of learning and sharing opportunities. On Sunday, January 22, Rabbi Joseph and Rob LaForte will lead a Shabbat discussion group. Not sure what to cook for a Shabbat dinner? We’ve got it covered. There will be cooking classes and demonstrations on preparing an Ashkenazi Shabbat dinner on January 8, a Sephardic Shabbat dinner on January 22, and Challah baking classes on January 8 and January 29. As part of Hineinu we have formed two ongoing adult cohorts a 50+ group and a 30s to 50s group - providing fun, creative, and meaningful opportunities to come together for outings and cultural events at CBI and in the community. Each event is initiated and planned by members of the cohort. If you have an event you would like to suggest for your group, please reach out to Tracy Alifanz at tracy@bethisrael-pdx.org. She will share it with the cohort coordinators Jan Cohen (30s - 50s) and Margie and Michael Anton (50+) and send an invitation to the distribution group. Not long ago survivors/settlers from Eastern Europe made Aliyah and formed kibbutzim and moshavim. Many were lost souls who survived because others around them welcomed them into a community. They lived, worked, ate and prayed (sometimes) communally. They recovered and then many thrived.

People experience houselessness for many reasons. The shelter pods we hosted in our parking lot will be finished at an outdoor worksite donated by a private business at NW 21st and York. Then they will head over to Hazelnut Grove.

BACKGROUND Hazelnut Grove began in September, 2015, as a group of houseless individuals and advocates from the community organized people sleeping in tents between N Greeley and N Interstate. The City of Portland provided fencing, some gravel, access to water from Overlook Park and two porta potties w ongoing servicing. With an outpouring of community support the Grove went from being a group of campers to a village, a community resource for people experiencing houselessness. Many former residents have moved on to permanent housing, and the Grove has been building tiny homes on site for its residents. The villagers do a lot for themselves including communal food prep, community water supply runs, neighborhood clean up, and, of course, building pathways, movable tiny houses and communal structures. They are living essentially off-grid in an urban environment, pioneering a new no-income housing solution.
Healing the Beloved Community: Silent Prayer and Meditation in the Public Square
Please join us for a follow-up to the incredible multi-faith gathering at Muslim Educational Trust last month. Our congregation will host a second event, a vigil of varied communities coming together in mutual support and fellowship on Sunday, January 22nd in the Main Sanctuary, followed by a silent vigil in Pioneer Square. In an era of hate speech, hate crimes, and racial profiling, Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of “the Beloved Community” is more important than ever. The interfaith community of Portland is therefore calling on all people who believe in this dream to gather on Sunday, January 22, two days after the presidential inauguration, to stand in solidarity with all those who stand to be marginalized and silenced by the incoming administration. We will meet at Congregation Beth Israel at 4:00 PM beginning with a litany of hope and challenge, followed by a silent march to Pioneer Square. Then starting at 5:00 PM, we will practice silent prayer and meditation for one hour in the name of Peace, Justice, and the Integrity of All Creation. #BelovedCommunityNW
NEXT STEPS The project we all helped start has developed into a collaboration to build and site 96 more shelter pods by the end of 2017. The following organizations are actively engaged with the project and are collaborating around design, material choices, resource development, staffing, training, logistics and site considerations. Portland Youthbuild, The Rebuilding Center, Pearl Hardware, Catlin Gable School, TIVNU Building for Justice, Keller Williams, Oregon Tradeswomen, Constructing Hope and diverse array of private sector volunteers.
WHAT YOU CAN DO? üü B uild a shelter pod with a group of friends, family or co-workers. We can set you up with a construction trainer. Our prototype can be completely built by 4 people working together under the leadership of an experienced construction trainer in about 24 hours. üü B ring any amount of the following key shelter pod building materials to The Rebuilding Center 3625 N. Mississippi Ave and tell them it’s for the “Pod Project”: 8 foot long 2x4’s, sheets of 3/4” plywood for walls and a roof, of T-111 siding or other kinds of siding, and of 1/4” paneling, rolls of R15 or higher insulation for 2”x4” walls, paint brushes, framing hammers, rolls of roofing paper, house wrap, and rolled asphalt roofing

L’Dor V’Dor From Generation to Generation Mazel Tov to Steven Wilker of Tonkon Torp LLP, who was honored by The Best Lawyers in America as First Amendment Lawyer of the Year in Portland for his work defending civil liberties and requiring public records disclosures to improve government transparency and oversight. Only a single lawyer in each practice in each community is honored as the “Lawyer of the Year”. The ACLU of Oregon also honored Wilker in 2016 as one of three attorneys who had argued for the Oregon affiliate at the U.S. Supreme Court.

CBI Welcomes New Staff Linda Cohen escaped the sun and heat of
Phoenix, AZ and settled in Forest Grove this past August and joined us in mid-November as our new Finance Director. She spent the past 12 years of her professional career in the non-profit sector, most recently as the CFO of a women’s resource foundation and as the Director of Finance and Business Operations for a large domestic violence shelter. Prior to Arizona, she raised her family in California bay and worked for 14 years as the Business Manager of Yavneh Day School. Linda has 3 children, 3 grandchildren and is excitedly awaiting the birth of her grandson within the next few weeks. An avid gardener and hiker, she is looking forward to spending time outdoors without a bottle of sunscreen as a constant companion.

Chelsea Feguson has just joined
CBI from sunny southern California as the new Clergy Assistant. She graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a degree in Communications and spent many summers working for URJ Camp Newman as their Communication Coordinator. She has also worked in synagogues for many years as an educator and in youth engagement. Most recently Chelsea spent eight months living, working and traveling in southeast Asia and spent the summer organizing social action trips for teens in New Jersey and Costa Rica. She is excited to explore and live in Portland and is looking forward to joining the CBI family.
