Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Shabbat Service FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 6 PM MAIN SANCTUARY

Please join us as we celebrate the work of Dr. King and welcome our Keynote Speaker

Bulletin January 2018 Tevet-Sh’vat 5778 Vol. 67, No. 2

Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell As the Member of Congress representing Alabama’s civil rights district, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell has been a passionate champion for recognizing and honoring the sacrifices of those freedom fighters who served as powerful agents of change. Her first piece of successful legislation, passed unanimously in both houses of Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama, recognized the “Four Little Girls” who tragically lost their lives during the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in 1963. Her Gold Medal bill to honor the Foot Soldiers of the Voting Rights Movement was signed by President Obama on the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

Our service will include music from the NW Gospel Choir and CBI’s Kol Echad Choir. Free and open to the public.

“I’m benefitting from the sacrifices and seeds sown by Shirley Chisholm, John Lewis, and so many others. Those of us who are beneficiaries owe it to have a season of service in which we try to give back.” - Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell

Don’t throw away your shot to see CBI’s much-anticipated Purim Schpiel. HAMANTON, presented in the Main Sanctuary on February 28, is free and open to the community.

WOODSCHLOCK ~THE PARTY~ January 20, 2018 7:00 PM, Goodman Hall On January 20th the Adult Ed Committee is throwing a party to celebrate the 60’s —a decade of political and social turmoil, citizen activism, and protest. There was the “Summer of Love” and Woodstock too. Were you there for any of this? Then dig out your beads and granny glasses and come as you were. There will be 60’s music, good food and drink, trivia, and dancing for the bold. Does anybody remember the Frug? Our expert will show you how. If you missed the 60’s because you weren’t yet born, or have some other good reason, this will be your best chance to catch up… and have a really good time. Contributions to the Adult Education Tribute Fund will be appreciated.

WELCOME, NEW CBI FAMILIES! Sydney Lorraine Hett Sydney Lorraine Hett, a seventh grader at Robert Gray Middle School, will become a Bat Mitzvah during a Havdalah service on Saturday, January 6, 2018. She is the daughter of Mark Hett and Jennifer Glickman-Hett. Sydney’s grandparents are Harry and Joanne Glickman of Portland, Oregon, and Susan Dakis of Camano Island, Washington. Sydney, whose grandfather is the founder and president emeritus of the Portland Trail Blazers, is a sports enthusiast. In addition to watching Trail Blazers games, she is an avid volleyball player for two organizations and has played on her school softball team for the last three years. In her spare time, Sydney enjoys hanging out with her friends, reading and spending time with her family, including her puppy, Sawyer. For her Mitzvah Project, Sydney has elected to honor the legacy of former Trail Blazers player, Jerome Kersey, as well as celebrate the special bond that she and Jerome shared, by raising funds for the JK25 Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to create smiles through dental care and education, with a focus on serving children who are underprivileged, under-served and under-insured. Sydney has also participated in a variety of philanthropic projects that have supported such organizations as the Children’s Cancer Association and The Boys & Girls Club. She also volunteers as a Teacher’s Aide at her former grade school.

CBI Book Group Sunday, January 7, 9:00 AM Shirley and Herbert Semler Board Room CBI’s Book Club is looking forward to our discussion of Jodi Picoult’s Small Great Things. All are welcome! We will also select titles for the coming year.

CBI WEATHER RELATED CLOSURE POLICY Brrr…it’s cold outside. While we at CBI are a pretty hardy bunch, and try to stay open as scheduled despite winter weather, safety remains a top priority. In the event of severe weather, especially when city officials advise drivers to stay off the roads, our offices may close and programming may be rescheduled. Should this happen, we will post notice of closures on our own webpage, www.bethisrael-pdx.org, on Facebook, and will notify congregants via email (so please check with our office to make sure we have your most up-to-date email address). Please also note that our Education Department follows the lead of Portland Public Schools; when they close, we close.

Developing CBI A Tradition of Giving by Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director Throughout the years our CBI community has come together to create unique and endearing traditions. From our Purim Schpiel to our congregants opening their homes for Share Shabbat, our community creates new ways to connect and spread the love of Judaism. One of our greatest traditions is the tradition of giving. This is evident through this list of our supporters who have made an annual contribution above and beyond their giving level, contributed to our Every Family Initiative (EFI) Campaign, or recently supported our Fall Fundraiser as a sponsor or Mitzvah Moment donor. We are honored to list all who have partnered with us to bolster our community and support the creation of new traditions to come. There are plenty of opportunities to be added to this list; helping sponsor our 7th annual Taste of Temple scheduled for March 18, 2018 – is just one of the easy ways. Let’s talk …

Social Action Thought Leaders and Innovation Stewards by Ben Sandler Education Director

I am writing today from the URJ Biennial in Boston where over 6,000 Jews have come together under an overarching theme of Reimagining Jewish Life and daily themes of Diversity, Innovation, Action, Faith, and Community. In just a few hours we’ll celebrate Shabbat together, and share a Shabbat dinner for 6,000 (sending strength to the caterer!) We’ll take a pause and from all the challenges and opportunities we have been addressing in our learning sessions and plenaries, and allow ourselves to be in the moment and try and see ourselves reflected in those around us, a sacred community. This evening will be my last at the Biennial. Tomorrow I’ll return to Portland, excited to bring what I have learned home, and to build on the relationships I’ve forged with talented colleagues, thought leaders, and innovation stewards over the past five days.

The Biennial’s CBI contingent—myself, our CBI Board of Trustee Vice President/President-Elect Glen Levy, and Chelsea Ferguson, our CBI Youth and Young Families Director—has covered a lot of ground. We’ve attended some of the 160 workshops offered, discussing Synagogue governance, engaging families with young children, and innovations and best practices in Jewish Education. The Biennial marks the closing of CBI’s two-year participation in a URJ Community of Practice. Together with professional and lay leaders from Chicago Sinai Congregation, and Temple Beth El in Charlotte, North Carolina, Glen and I were invited to co-lead a workshop titled “Relationship, Meaning, and Impact: Strategies for Addressing Challenges and Creating Opportunities.” We shared some of what we’ve learned about addressing challenges and creating opportunities through changes in our Early Childhood Engagement model and the launch of our Mini Mensches community. Throughout the week, speakers have challenged and inspired us. This morning, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren addressed our group highlighting the key economic issues she champions in the Senate, and reminding us of our own individual and collective power to change the world for the better. This afternoon, I attended “Crossing the streets and Crossing Borders,” a session discussing the amazing community building happening between Temple Shir Tikva, Boston and the Islamic Center of Boston. In just two days, students from the Muslin Education Trust will be visiting our CBI High School, and I’ll be bringing home many ideas on how we can continue to grow our relationship and promote peace and understanding through cultural exchange, the arts, and social justice work. My flight home will be busy with reading, reflecting and planning the work ahead, but now it’s time to celebrate Share Shabbat in Boston, Shabbat Shalom! Ben

Vote YES on Measure 101 on January 23, 2018 The Social Action Committee and the Board of Congregation Beth Israel recommends a “YES” vote on Ballot Measure 101. This measure will protect healthcare for the most needy in our community, particularly low-income children, seniors, and people with disabilities. Please take a moment to vote “YES” on Measure 101 and return your ballot by January 23, 2018. Measure 101 will use monies from hospitals and healthcare providers to fund 100% coverage of children by the Oregon Medicaid Program and 95% of eligible adults by bridging the gap in Medicaid funding, created by a state budget shortfall and federal cuts. This is a provider tax so it will not be assessed on individuals—only hospitals and health care providers. Payments will be matched by the Federal Government. Virtually all health care providers favor the tax.

Our tradition teaches us that human life is of infinite value and that the preservation of life supersedes almost all other considerations. Providing health care is not just an obligation for the doctor, but for society as well. It is for this reason that the revered Jewish scholar, Maimonides, placed health care first on his list of the ten most important communal services that a city had to offer to its residents (Mishneh Torah, Hilchot De’ot IV: 23). Please help us support this important measure to support the poorest and most vulnerable members of our community. Vote YES on Measure 101.

NEWS FLASH: IT’S MOROCCO! We are organizing a congregational trip to Morocco in 2019 which will highlight sites of Jewish interest. We will travel from March 27 to April 8, 2019 and the estimated cost of the land portion of the trip will be $4,650 per person. The trip will be limited to 26 congregants plus clergy. Itinerary and other details, including sign up information, will appear in “Beneath Our Dome” in the coming months.

Sisterhood/Brotherhood

L’Dor V’Dor From Generation to Generation SISTERHOOD CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION Here’s to the next 100 years!

Chanukah Care Packages Beth Israel Sisterhood mailed eighty Chanukah care packages to our US-based college students and military members in December! The kids appreciate getting our packages and hearing from their Temple family. Sisterhood volunteers Kathleen Doctor, Diane Lowensohn, and Rita Schlansky packaged up chocolate gelt, a wooden dreidel, Chanukah toys, chocolate kisses, hot chocolate, and microwave popcorn. There were Chanukah greetings from Rabbi Cahana, a note from Sisterhood, and a student directory with email addresses so the kids can keep in touch with each other. Be sure to add your student to the list for the Purim mailing next month. Contact Kathleen Doctor at kathleendoctor@me.com with your student’s name, school, mailing and email addresses. This program is a free service to families of the congregation made possible by the Urman Family College Communications Fund. The next time you may be making a tribute, please consider the Urman Family Fund.

Condolences to Phoebe Ann and Ravi Benjamin Solomon on the loss of their great uncle, and the extended Solomon family on the loss of Bertram Solomon, who passed away on October 15. The CBI Brotherhood has been busy planning for 2018 and will be making our plans and general calendar of events known in February in hopes of having another strong communal year. We are still focused on “fun” as our general theme and will be pushing a multigenerational effort through our Brotherhood membership to increase participation within the younger and the older generations. We recognize the importance of feeling included in a community, and also know that the stories and history of years past will be lost without a collective effort to pass on that history. We see a unique opportunity to provide a means of facilitating that passing of the historical baton within our organization. If you haven’t considered the importance of our rich 159 year history as of late, and want to get more involved in its preservation, reach out to Brotherhood president Jeff Capen at Jeff@dennisoncapengroup.com at 503-8885191. Let’s work together to celebrate all that we’ve done and been to our community over the years.

Very Thoughtful People CBI TRIBUTE FUND SPOTLIGHT:

The Miller Room Refurbishment and Restoration Fund Just off Blumauer Auditorium in the Sherman Education Building, the Miller Room is one of the liveliest multi-use spaces on our historic campus. Sunday morning finds it home to our Religious School students as they connect to their culture through dance, and our Education team uses it regularly for their programming. It has been the site of many intimate family post B’nei Mitzvah dinners and countless pre-school and summer camp circle times. In recent weeks, has begun to serve as the “Awake Room” for Mitzvah House, the emergency family winter shelter on CBI’s campus, giving late-arriving guests a place to settle in and unwind and parents a calm space in which to soothe crying babies. Your ongoing support of The Miller Room Refurbishment and Restoration Fund will allow us to maintain this vital space and update it as our community’s needs continue to evolve.
