This year at CBI we truly came together to break new records. The generosity of our CBI community is becoming legendary and we applaud all who contribute. We can proudly boast that we far surpassed our 2016-17 fundraising goal of $265,000; at the time this article is being written over $300,000 has been secured to fill the budget gap. It is with that in mind that twice a year we embrace the opportunity to list those donors who have gone above and beyond and helped us achieve/surpass our goal. We are privileged to honor over 500 individuals, families, and businesses that helped us in this endeavor. Articles and photos shared throughout the year have acknowledged the multitude of programs and services these donors make possible. MOST importantly, their support helps ensure that all who wish to be a part of our community may do so. At CBI we consider ourselves partners with our members. Through our annual giving (formerly dues) we ask that you give us your best, most meaningful contribution and we in turn do our best to provide an impactful and in many cases transformative experience. July-August B’nei Mitzvahs Anita Lenora Sandler
Sophia Elizabeth Weprin
Anita Lenora Sandler will become a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, July 1, 2017. She is the daughter of Ben Sandler and Lolly Jamerson, younger sister of Ava, and granddaughter of Carol and Neil (z”l) Sandler of Charlotte, NC and Will and Evelyn Jamerson. A 7th grader at da Vinci Arts Middle School, Anita combines her studies with classes in multiple forms of dance, textiles, African drumming, and theater. Her love of dance continues outside of school where she studies tap, jazz and hip hop at da Vinci and ballet at the Classical Ballet Academy. Anita also plays fall soccer and enjoys reading, baking, listening to music and spending time with her friends and family. For her Mitzvah Project, Anita will be volunteering over the summer at the Aspire Project, which provides opportunities for underprivileged kids to be able to take dance classes and enroll in summer camps. Anita will assist with a summer camp focusing on ballet and working with children ages 5 to 13.
Thomas Andrew (Drew) Stoner Thomas Andrew (Drew) Stoner will become a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, July 8, 2017. Drew is the son of Elyse and Ed Stoner and the younger brother of Mitchell. Drew’s grandparents were Elinor (z”l) and Allen Adler (z”l) of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania and Marion (z”l) and Tom Stoner (z”l) of Dayton, Ohio. Drew is entering 8th grade at West Sylvan Middle School. He likes hanging out with friends, being active and photography. He plays tennis and has recently taken up Parkour. Drew’s Mitzvah Project will support the Veterinary Cancer & Surgery Specialists, Milwaukie, Oregon, a privately owned medical and surgical oncology center dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of canine and feline cancer, as well as orthopedic and soft tissue surgical issues. Drew says, “Our dog Misty had cancer and was a patient at Veterinary Cancer & Surgery Specialists in Milwaukie, OR. They gave her great care and lots of treats, so for my Bar Mitzvah project, I want to help other animals who have cancer like Misty and for VCSS to be able to have the resources for those animals and their families.” You can support his project in either by bringing towels, yoga mats and blankets to his Bar Mitzvah where there will collection bins or by making a financial donation to www.veterinarycarefoundation. org. Select Donate to a Vet or Practice on the Donate page and then Veterinary Cancer & Surgery Specialists in Oregon.
Levi Newman Minch Levi Newman Minch will become a Bar Mitzvah on July 29, 2017. Levi is the son of David Minch and Michelle Bombet Minch and the younger brother of twin sisters, Abigail and Audrey who are 16 years old. Levi also has three dogs, a bunny, and a horse; all of which are rescues. Levi will be an 8th grader at Athey Creek Middle School and enjoys swimming, wrestling, biking, computer programming, printing 3D artwork, reading, and drawing. Levi began religious school in kindergarten at another synagogue and joined Beth Israel Congregation in the 5th grade; which he found to be a great community and very friendly. Levi’s Mitzvah Project is to help Oregon Dog Rescue, an organization that rescues dogs from overcrowded local shelters, owners who can no longer keep their dogs (following an evaluation), and from high-kill shelters all over the West Coast. For his project, Levi will raise money so that Oregon Dog Rescue can fly puppies in from a kill shelter in California, which is how his family got Pixie, pictured here. He will need to raise $1,000 for this facet of the project; if you wish to contribute you can do so at www.oregondogrescue.org/about-1. Simply include “Levi’s Bar Mitzvah” on PayPal’s “review your donation” page labeled “Add special instructions to the seller.” You can also write a check to Oregon Dog Rescue and write “Levi’s Bar Mitzvah” in the memo. In addition to fundraising, Levi will walk dogs that can be adopted and collect donations such as 4’ thin leashes, nylabones, or plastic dog crates. Delia Janae Graham
Allison Asbock Allison Asbock will become a Bat Mitzvah on July 15, 2017. She is the daughter of Joan Silverman and Max Asbock, and younger sister of Naomi. She is a rising 8th grader at West Sylvan Middle School. Allison really likes cats, and that is why for her Mitzvah Project, Allison is trying to help save Amur leopards and Amur tigers. She is spreading awareness about these beautiful and endangered animals and has raised money for ALTA (Amur Leopard and Tiger Alliance), an organization that helps with the conservation of these cats.

Sophia Elizabeth Weprin will become a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, July 22, 2017. Sophia is the daughter of Jennifer and Jeffrey Weprin. Sophia has a younger sister, Ella, and a younger brother, Logan. Sophia is a 7th grader at The Gilkey International School and enjoys writing, running, dancing, and spending time with her friends. For her Mitzvah Project, Sophia is excited to work with Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest. Girls Inc. is a national organization, with local chapters, created with a mission to “inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold” and a vision of “empowered girls and an equitable society.” Sophia plans to engage in volunteering for events organized by Girls Inc. and participating fully in helping Girls Inc. follow its mission and vision.
Delia Janae Graham will become a Bat Mitzvah on August 12, 2017. A 7th grader at Hosford Middle School, Delia loves the theater and has performed in many shows all over the Portland area. She also enjoys writing and illustrating stories. Her Mitzvah Project involves raising funds for and awareness of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, a dangerous birth complication that is fatal in 50 percent of cases; Delia is a lucky survivor. Our Leadership Ellis Braden Ellis Braden will become a Bar Mitzvah on August 19, 2017. A 7th grader at Saint Thomas More School, Ellis enjoys competitive lacrosse, tennis, and soccer. He also enjoys building models and working with Lego. His Mitzvah Project involves raising funds for Children’s Miracle Network and conducting outreach and awareness about Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen on July 27th. $1 from every Blizzard treat sold on that day will benefit Children’s Miracle Network. All money raised stays local to fund critical pediatric treatments and healthcare services, medical equipment and charitable care. Ellis is selling Blizzard benefit certificates, providing outreach and marketing, volunteering in store on July 27th at DQ, and collecting donations at www.firstgiving.com/ fundraiser/ellisb/EllisBradensPage. Ellis would like to thank his family and school for their support.
Gabriel Jonah Korngold Gabriel Jonah Korngold will become a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, August 26, 2017. Gabe is the son of Drs. Ethan and Elena Korngold. He has a younger brother, Benjamin. Gabe’s grandparents are Gerald and Alice Korngold of New York City, and Diane and Joseph (z”l) Karp of Philadelphia, PA and Santa Fe, NM. Gabe’s great-grandmother Juliet Korngold currently lives in New York City and Boca Raton, FL. Gabe is a 7th Grader at Catlin Gabel School. He loves soccer (his favorite team is Chelsea), skiing, poetry, math, and all forms of maps and transit. In his spare time he enjoys reading, riding his bicycle throughout Oregon, traveling, and playing with his friends and brother. For his Mitzvah Project, Gabe has decided to include his friends and classmates in his family’s tradition of volunteering at the Oregon Food Bank, and will spend the summer bringing groups with him to volunteer there, and collecting food donations. Tie a Blue Thread The last two books of Torah, Numbers and Deuteronomy, are filled with stories of the Israelites wandering in the desert, of their endless complaining, of multiple rebellions, of blessings and curses. At Deuteronomy’s core is an epic recitation given by Moses recounting the entire story of the Israelite’s saga from slavery to freedom. It is ironic that these two densely packed tomes encompass the portions of Torah which we read throughout the carefree days of June through August and into early September-this is not light summer reading, folks. Reading these stories reminds us that as individuals and as a people, we have always struggled with coming to terms with who we are and how we relate to those around us. From the time Moses sent scouts into the land of Canaan and ten of twelve scouts brought back reports fueled by fear and self-doubt, anxiety has been one of the other plagues for which we have not yet found a cure. As a Jewish community, we find various ways to assuage the global unease we experience. Some seek out opportunities to act and make a difference in our small yet vital orbit. Some seek out opportunities for prayer, reflection, and music in experiences of worship services. Some seek out opportunities to expand their knowledge and awareness through study. All of us long for ways to connect with others who see us for our intrinsic worth. All of us long to be listened to, not talked at. Each of us needs to feel appreciated for the value that only we can bring to this world. The two spies in parashat Shelach-l’cha in the book of Numbers who did not succumb to fear and insecurity were Caleb and Joshua. Caleb was imbued with ruach acheret, “a different spirit,” and was able to see the optimal good in himself and the future. And he had a friend in Joshua with whom he could share and work toward that vision. Later in this section, the children of Israel are commanded to tie a thread of blue into the fringes on their garments that all people, men and women were commanded to wear, as a reminder that we are the people commanded to see ourselves and others as created in the divine image and to act accordingly. Most of us do not wear this fringe of blue every day on our garments. Most of us do not take enough time to show appreciation to ourselves, our friends, our family and to others who inspire us. According to some estimates, anxiety tops the list for mental health issues in North America, with half of college age students seeking help for anxiety and depression and nearly a third of all adults suffering from anxiety. The thread of a red bracelet was ubiquitous in neo-Kabbalistic circles a short time ago; perhaps it is time for us to introduce a bracelet of blue, a fringe to remind us every day of our self-worth, our Jewish obligation to put fear aside, find a friend and together engage in repairing the world. I am excited to share with you all that I will be starting graduate school in the fall. I will be pursuing a Masters of Public Health at Oregon State University in the Global Health track. Thank you all for an amazing 3.5 years! I am truly grateful for the wonderful experience it has been working here! I especially want to say thank you to Ben Sandler for his mentorship and all that he has taught me. My time at Congregation Beth Israel has been an incredible journey. From teaching Israeli dance to leading our Midrasha programs and youth groups, I feel privileged to have been able to work with so many of our students. CBI is a special community and I am so glad to have been a part of it. I am extremely proud of PARTY and all they have accomplished these past few years. I look forward to seeing their continued growth and am confident that the Middle and High School programming will continue in success under its new leadership. After joining the CBI team in November, I am thrilled to be transitioning into my new role as Director of Youth and Young Family Engagement. I am incredibly lucky to have the chance to continue to be part of the CBI family. I am excited to be moving back into the world of engagement and education after spending five summers at URJ Camp Newman in California and teaching at religious school for many years. I can’t wait to help create our new young families program and continue to grow our youth program! HELP US HEAL THE WORLD JOIN the Social Action Committee OUR NEXT MEETING IS ON WEDNESDAY, September 6, 2017 at 5:30 PM Please join us for our next meeting and help us plan next year’s activities. The Social Action Committee has events for everyone. In addition to our annual events, like the High Holiday Funds for Food Drive and Mitzvah Day, we have many exciting activities that need volunteers throughout the year. Help us support NW Towers and Annex by providing festive meals every few months and tutoring the kids from the Annex. Join us in planning activities for our advocacy arm focusing on issues of social justice, hunger, and gun violence prevention. The Social Action Committee is an OPEN committee. All are welcome. No need to be appointed, or elected, or even sign up. Just show up our meetings to become a committee member and help with strategizing and planning fun and worthwhile events. Come to our next meeting to get all the details and get involved. Starting in September, we meet on the first Wednesday of every other month at 5:30 PM in the Shirley and Herbert Semler Board Room.

Many of you may have had the opportunity to see our Gallery of Remembrance that was in Lipman Foyer. It is a timeline of events that have happened over the last 100 years. The opening was during our Havdalah service in May. Be on the lookout for it to pop up again. On the third day of Passover we held a wonderful concert called Crossing Over. We thank all of you who came out to support us at this fund raiser and very special event. Our next big event will be November 5th, so please put this on your calendar. This will be our 100th Celebration Gala and will be held in Goodman Hall. Look for information to come. This is going to be a fun evening of entertainment and dining with our community to celebrate our Sisterhood.
