April B’not Mitzvah
Our Leadership
Leah Harriet Paris Leah Harriet Paris will become a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, April 14, 2018. Leah is the daughter of Anna and Steven Paris and younger sister to Lawren. A seventh grader at Cedar Park Middle School, Leah enjoys singing and playing guitar, playing with her dog, and decorating and organizing her room. For her Mitzvah Project, Leah has decided to work with Dress for Success-Oregon, an organization which empowers women to achieve economic independence. Dress for Success provides women in poverty a network of support, professional attire, and the development tools to help them thrive in work and in life.
Sofia Rose Meltzer Sofia Rose Meltzer will become a Bat Mitzvah on April 21, 2018. She is the daughter of Adam and Daniela Meltzer, and older sister to Rachel Arianna Meltzer. She is the granddaughter of Dr. Jose and Sarita Spiwak (of Rancho Mission Viejo, CA) and Rena and Myron (z”l) Meltzer (of Bluffton, SC). A seventh grader at Portland Jewish Academy, Sofia lights up the room when she walks in. She is always willing to lend a hand, and be a good steward of the environment and her community. Outside of school, Sofia enjoys gymnastics, playing the piano, synchronized swimming, Girl Scouts and traveling. An avid reader, Sofia has been so captivated by the Harry Potter series that her Bat Mitzvah is an homage to Harry’s adventures.
A Walk of Remembrance by Cantor Ida Rae Cahana Senior Cantor One of the most memorable family programs I have witnessed at our Religious School occurs each Spring when the fifth grade walks with their families and teachers to the Holocaust memorial in Washington Park. It is a time for learning, reflection, and bonding with each other in a lovely outdoor setting whose simple beauty stands as a stark contrast to the immense tragedy it commemorates. This Spring, make the walk (or drive) to gather with our CBI family, as well as Jews and non-Jews from across Portland, to commemorate and remember on Yom HaShoah, Wednesday, April 11 at 6:00 PM in our Main Sanctuary. We rotate this event from one synagogue to the other each year and this Spring, it is our honor to host the prayerful commemoration. Music, stories, meditation – all will bear witness to the presence and words of survivors. We have so little time to hear these truths in their own voices as more of this sacred community leaves this earth. Please honor them and offer friends and family the invitation to stand together, to listen, to embed our history and the lessons of the survivors’ stories in our souls, to be among those who say to the latest scourge of genocide, “Never again!”
For her Mitzvah project, Sofia, along with her younger sister and mother, has been volunteering at the Children’s Book Bank, helping to clean up books to give to young students all around Multnomah County. Children’s Book Bank collects books for young readers who otherwise would not have access to them. Volunteers like Sophia clean the books up so that they are like brand new, put them in bundles, and deliver them to Head Start programs all around Multnomah County. In addition, they bring books to public schools so that students can collect books, free of charge, for their summer reading. Throughout the course of the year, the organization collects, cleans and distributes over 30,000 books! Bat Mitzvah guests and our community may bring in their books so that we may donate to the Children’s Book Bank.
Passover begins the evening of Friday, March 30.
Stella Opal Jones Stella Opal Jones will become a Bat Mitzvah on April 28, 2018. Stella is the daughter of Brian Jones and Charlotte MacDonald, and has a younger sister, Sylvia Jones. A seventh grader at Metropolitan Learning Center, Stella’s favorite subject in school is math, particularly algebra. She fills her life with music, drama, and visual arts. She has been playing piano for seven years, marimba for four, and recently took up learning bass and acoustic guitar. Acting in her first Shakespeare play last fall, she looks forward to more chances to get on stage. For her Mitzvah Project she is raising funds to support Ethos Music Center, where she has studied for five years. She knows how important it is to have music education at a young age and through her efforts hopes to provide funds to support a music class in rural Oregon through Ethos’ outreach program.

Upcoming Events UPCOMING EVENTS
From Abraham and Sarah, to our forefather Isaac, whose name means “he shall laugh,” reflecting Abraham’s reaction when he hears that he and Sarah would become parents at such advanced age, our people have used humor for protesting the improbable, the impossible, the injustices and iniquities of life. Although comedy as protest is not unique to Jews, we have used it throughout history as we strive to transcend, humanize our circumstances, as well as speak “truth to kings.” This has led to many Jewish authors, comedic productions, stand-up comics, and comedy onstage and in every type of media: radio, records, film, television, and now online media. It has also led to comedy about us, sometimes in cruel stereotypes, sometimes to exemplify the ugliness of bigotry. Presenters Sherry and Paul Fishman will share and discuss clips from films, plays, cartoons, television series, recordings, old radio shows, and stand up comedians to exemplify the uses of farce, absurdity, irony, and satire to protest the ills and injustices of society. Ultimately we laugh to lift and renew our spirits so we can move forward, and this will be a fun evening. Come prepared to enjoy current and classic comedic favorites.
After the 1968 Democratic Convention and Police Riot in Chicago, the Nixon White House decided to prosecute eight men for attempting to disrupt the convention and the city of Chicago. Most of the eight defendants were Jewish, as were their defense counsel, William Kuntsler and Leonard Weinglass. So was the federal judge, Julius Hoffman. Eventually the case against Black Panther Bobby Seale was severed and the remaining defendants became known as The Chicago Seven. Fifty years later, CBI’s Adult Education Committee presents a discussion of the trial, a circus that was, in the words of defendant Abbie Hoffman, “a shande fur de Goyim.”

Developing CBI Building Community through Taste of Temple by Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director People often ask – what do you like best about Taste of Temple? It’s a tough question: so many things make TOT special. Of course, the terrific food and drink always appeal to me, as does the great ambience as guests and vendors mingle. Best of all, however, is the relationship building that comes as we plan and execute the event and the community fun that continues with our Beyond the Taste parties. The people I have met through Taste of Temple are some of the dearest friends I have at CBI. This event, now in its seventh year, serves as a wonderful community friendraiser and fun(d) raiser. From its beginning, TOT has supported our local economy while local businesses support our community at the same time. It’s definitely a winning combination! The biggest confirmation of the success of last year’s event can be found in the fact that the amazing team of Robin and Steve McCoy have returned to chair TOT for a second time. At the top of their to do list was to recruit a dynamic and diverse committee that encourages our members to attend while also recruiting over forty top local restaurants, vintners, brewers and distillers. We all come together for one glorious afternoon where for the set price of $54 per person (for tickets purchased by March 5th) you can eat, imbibe, and socialize with some of the nicest, friendliest, and most supportive adult (21 and over) members of our community. Please know we want you with us – so register now! In every way this event offers a Taste of Temple – a community that belongs to all of us. Those working behind the scenes include: Benjamin Ariff, Jordan Busch, Bonnie Davis, Nikki Dorfman, Carly Fujita, Ali and Judah Garfinkle, Ronit and Craig Gerard, Tiffany and David Goldwyn, Lynne Hana, Arlene and Paul Koenigsberg, Aaron Korach, Glen Levy, Gail Mandel, Ryan Pitman, Nate Smith, Joanne and Bill Treuhaft, and Tony Urdes. In addition to thanking our dedicated committee we are also grateful to our very generous sponsors who partner with us to impact Jewish lives and create Jewish memories. Their generosity enables us to keep our ticket price unchanged since the inception of this event. At the time this article is written the sponsors list has additions every few hours; so as to give equal recognition to all donors we will list them in the next Bulletin. In the meantime, you can find the growing list online at http://temple18.gesture.com And since a once a year gathering is never really enough, you can continue to enjoy the fun by purchasing seats at one of the many Beyond the Taste gatherings that are held for several months after TOT. These parties are all made possible by enthusiastic CBI members who create and host these gatherings so that the fun of connecting with other community members while also generously supporting CBI continues throughout the year. We also invite you to make a fully tax-deductible donation to our Mitzvah Moment portion of the evening.

Education Beyond the Box
Mazel Tov, Ben Sandler!
by Ben Sandler Education Director The national conference of the Association of Reform Jewish Educators was held in Seattle, Washington this year. The theme for the conference was Beyond the Box: Using the Power of Radical Thinking to Transform Jewish Education. We had the opportunity to experience innovative models of thinking in Jewish and non-Jewish organizations and to team up with colleagues to create radical solutions for big questions in Jewish education. Seattle is considered one of the top U.S. cities for innovation, and as part of the conference I toured the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation has developed an amazing alignment of mission, partnerships, funding, and action! Working in targeted areas of improving global health, and sustainable economic growth with greater equity, their approach to grant-making emphasizes “collaboration, innovation, risk-taking, and, most importantly, results.” As Jewish educators we were asked to think deeply about how collaboration, innovation, and risk-taking can shape the work we do. Each evening of the conference we gathered as educators to reflect on questions that arise in our practice, challenges we see, and how to move forward with the strengths and challenges in our congregations. Through an exploration of design thinking and human-centered learning we discovered new strategies and ways of thinking about Jewish education with an emphasis on making learning more personal and relevant for our students.
Mazel Tov to Ben Sandler, CBI’s Director of Education on achieving the designation of Reform Jewish Educator (R.J.E.). Since its establishment in 1982, the Association of Reform Jewish Educators has been highly selective in awarding this title; Ben is the 587th recipient. His work and leadership were an essential part of CBI’s participating in a URJ Community of Practice, in which (along with Temple Beth-El in Charlotte, North Carolina and the Chicago Sinai Congregation) explored the challenges and possibilities of our Early Childhood Engagement Model.
L’Shalom Ben
We’ve had a wonderful beginning of the year together. I am so excited to continue learning and growing with you all. February brings us lots of new opportunities for making connections and spending time as a community. I hope to see you at one of our events!

Mitzvah Day Sunday, April 29, 2018 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Make a difference, build community, and have a blast! Join us for Mitzvah Day, an annual event at CBI that honors the spirit of both tikkum olam and tzedakah. We guarantee you will: work on a project that tangibly helps others; meet and connect with other members of CBI; and get the opportunity to be seen in the ever-stylish and very recognizable CBI bright blue Mitzvah shirt. We will start the day at 9:00 AM with a delicious breakfast and brief program. We will then head off to various projects, either on campus or off-site. Volunteer for a variety of projects – preparing food for congregants in need, beautifying our cemetery, serving brunch at NW Tower, sorting and stocking food and more. Donate food and clothing to local organizations. Be on the lookout for the Mitzvah Day signup in the weekly Beneath the Dome and Parent Nus email blasts. Questions? Email SAC@bethisrael-pdx.org.
Interfaith Alliance on Poverty CBI is a member of the Interfaith Alliance on Poverty. The Alliance is a diverse and dynamic group of local faith based congregations with a mission of working to alleviate poverty in the Portland region.
All Mitzvah House volunteers must be over the age of 18 and complete Volunteer Orientation with Portland Homeless Family Solutions. Please check our weekly emails, or keep an eye on our website (www.bethisrael-pdx.org) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/bethisraelpdx) for the schedule of and details about upcoming orientations. You can email TC@pdxhfs.org to sign up or to arrange donation dropoffs and Tracy@bethisrael-pdx.org with any additional questions.
Mitzvah House needs your in-kind donations! We are always seeking blankets, pillows, flat twin sheets, pillowcases, new socks for adults and children, new underwear for adults and children, coats, cold and flu medicine for adults and children, and breakfast and snack food. Items may be dropped off at the Schnitzer Family Center. Please reach out to Tracy@bethisrael-pdx.org or TC@pdxhfs.org with any questions. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept clothing, shoes, or stuffed animals.
Ongoing Volunteer Opportunity! Be a Great Neighbor! Sundays, 9:00-9:30 AM Trader Joe’s (2122 NW Glisan)
Our goals include: • Increasing understanding of poverty, especially generational poverty. • E ngaging with those in poverty to provide direct connection and service, and to increase our understanding of the problem. • Advocating for systemic change to help eliminate poverty. Meetings are held the first Thursday of every month from 12:00-2:00 PM. Meeting locations vary and all meetings are open to the public and include educational components and thought- provoking discussions. The Alliance also sponsors seminars and workshops which are open to the public.
Every Sunday morning, a CBI team helps to load, transport, and unload up to 40 large boxes of food donated from Trader Joe’s on NW Glisan to our neighbors at NW Towers and Annex. This food donation helps an average of 40 households each week, many of whom rely on it as their main food source.
CBI will be hosting the March meeting on Thursday, March 1 in Goodman Hall from 12:00-2:00 PM. We look forward to welcoming guest speaker Brandi Tuck, Executive Director of Portland Homeless Family Solutions. Join us!
Thanks to our regular volunteers, Shirley and Richard Plotzker, Steve Roitstein and family, and many other CBI members who have helped with this ongoing mitzvah. New volunteers, especially those with trucks or SUVs, are welcome to participate. Please contact Sally Rosenfeld at srosenfeldfrank@gmail.com.

Very Thoughtful People CBI TRIBUTE FUND SPOTLIGHT:
The Lloyd B. Rosenfeld Youth Leadership Fund A few short hours before her inspiring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Shabbat Keynote Address, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell enjoyed dinner and conversation with CBI students. For many of them, this wasn’t their first encounter with national leadership: as part of Congregation Beth Israel’s 10th Grade Confirmation experience, the class participates in L’Taken - an intensive four-day Political Action Seminar in our nation’s capital. The students meet with members of the Religious Action Center in Washington, D.C., studying issues pertinent to our people as well as the greater good of our nation. The Lloyd B. Rosenfeld Youth Leadership Fund provides scholarship support so that all our students are able to participate in this amazing opportunity.
