February B’nei Mitzvahs
Upcoming Events
David Liam Smith
Renata Hemstreet
David Liam Smith, son of Lauren and Michael Smith became a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, February 11, 2017. David has two older siblings, his sister Emily and his brother Ryan, and his grandparents are Dr. Burton and Judy (z’l) Stillman of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and David and Kathleen Smith of York, Pennsylvania. David is a 7th grader at Evergreen Middle School. He enjoys playing competitive baseball and basketball, and he is also a member of his school robotics team. David has always loved animals, so for his Mitzvah Project he will be coordinating an animal food and supply drive for the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter. David picked Bonnie L. Hays because unlike most animal shelters that take in stray animals, every healthy unclaimed animal finds a loving adoptive home.
Renata Hemstreet became a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, February 18, 2017. Renata is the daughter of Joanna Ogintz and Tim Hemstreet. She is an older sister to Naomi. Renata is a 7th grader at Beaumont Middle School. Renata likes soccer, swimming, piano, and art. For her Mitzvah Project, Renata has been regularly volunteering doing food repack for the Oregon Food Bank. She often brings along friends and family to help as well.

Responsa Seminar Sunday, April 9, 10:00 AM Shirley and Herbert Semler Board Room Rabbi Stephen Passamaneck leads the second of our responsa seminars, inviting you to try your hand at responsa, crafting answers to questions from everyday life in the light of Jewish law and legal principles. Your thoughts will be part of a longstanding tradition: collections of responsa—answers to questions from real people addressed to the rabbis of their day—date back to the 9th century in Babylonia. Sign-ups are appreciated. Call Molly Weisner in the CBI Main Office at (503) 222-1069.

Congregation Beth Israel
Hineinu
Hineinu The Hineinu Task Force is grateful to our almost 400 congregants who participated or attempted to participate in our February 3rd CBI Shares Shabbat. This was our first attempt to have a congregation wide event centered on congregants celebrating Shabbat together in our homes. We are so sorry for those who were unable to celebrate Shabbat because of the icy streets, and promise we will never schedule another CBI Shares Shabbat during the winter months! Much work went into CBI Shares Shabbat, including that of our hosts and guests. It was especially heartening that so many of our congregants opened their homes to others. We had even more host volunteers than guests and it was a terrific opportunity to be with both old and new friends. Special thanks goes to the organizers of CBI Shares Shabbat - Rob LaForte, Sally Rosenfeld, Sydney Baer, Bob Kravitz, Daureen Morris, Cantor Cahana, Rabbi Joseph, Jen Feldman, Marisa Reby and the incomparable Tracy Alifanz, without whom the event would not have been possible! And we thank Rabbi Cahana, Josh Kashinsky and the entire CBI staff for their support. In addition to the actual Shabbat dinners, we had classes led by our Clergy and congregants to help enhance our understanding and enjoyment of Shabbat. We are especially grateful to our wonderful teachers, Cantor Cahana, Rabbi Joseph, Rob LaForte, Joel Seres, Sydney Baer, Michelle Gradow and Amanda Netter, who taught us so much, both culinarily and spiritually. We also thank Cantor Schiff and Daureen Morris for creating great baking and cooking classes, which had to be postponed due to the weather.

For those who participated, this may have been your first experience with what Hineinu is striving to accomplish at CBI - to strengthen our community and recognize the sanctity of one another. Please join us for more Hineinu activities - you will find them listed on the CBI website and in the weekly Beneath Our Dome emails. In order to foster more participation, we will be sending each congregant from time to time, information regarding upcoming events sponsored by our various cohorts, from celebratory Shabbat Onegs, to gatherings among families, and events of interest to our 50+ members, as well as for congregants from 30 to 50 (actual or in spirit). There is of course no obligation to participate, but we hope you may find events that will be of interest to you. Our Caring Community is working on a number of initiatives to provide support to our congregants as we each deal with life’s pleasures and challenges. We also ask that you consider becoming a greeter at Shabbat services. It is simple to sign up and we welcome your participation whenever it’s convenient for you. We are thrilled that a number of our congregants have agreed to serve as ambassadors to help our newest members learn more about what CBI has to offer. Please check the CBI website for more details on all of our cohort activities. We would appreciate receiving your thoughts on our first CBI Shares Shabbat and our other events and activities. Hineinu is still in its infancy and we welcome your participation and suggestions to help us better foster community at CBI. Please feel free to contact Tracy Alifanz at tracy@bethisrael-pdx.org. The best is yet to come!

Education
Early Childhood Engagement at CBI
We are looking forward to presenting a full range of programs and opportunities, and if you have ideas or inspiration you want to share as we make out plans for next year, please call (503-222-1069) or email (ben@bethisrael-pdx.org) me. We are eager for your thoughts!
by Ben Sandler Education Director Congregation Beth Israel has always been dedicated to Jewish families with young children, and, next year, we will be innovating the way we involve them with our community. After much consideration, we have decided to move away from our morning preschool model and transition to a new Early Childhood Engagement model that will connect them with Jewish culture and ethics throughout their lives. While our morning preschool has been a wonderful opportunity for families who are able to participate, this change will allow us to engage more families throughout their Jewish journeys.
Jewish summer camp is wonderful on so many levels! That is why CBI’s Director of Youth Engagement Shoshanna Pro and Education Administrator Sarah Reiter so strongly believe in bringing the magic of camp to CBI through Camp Sababa.
We will always be grateful for the connections we made through our morning preschool program, and to the inspiring leadership of Sanny Snell, who first established it. It has been an honor and a joy to watch our youngest members find their places in our thriving community. None of this would have been possible without our many dedicated early childhood educators, and we look forward to carrying their vision forward with the next phase of CBI’s Early Childhood Engagement program. L’Shalom, Ben
Registration is now open to members at a discounted rate, as well as to non-members.
This year, we are thrilled to expand Camp Sababa to a four week program. 8th and 9th graders will participate in the MadrichimIn-Training (MIT) week from July 31st- August 4th, learning valuable leadership skills in anticipation of their active roles as MITs for Sessions 1-3. In these sessions, which run August 7th though 25th, campers in grades K-5 will play games, create art projects and enjoy field trips and the summer sun!

Brotherhood
Sisterhood
Winter in Portland Sucks. Sorry. It just does. Especially if you are houseless. I’ve been wet for 12, 14 hours at a time fishing, or doing something fun. Folks living in a houseless village in Portland like R2D2, Dignity Village, Forgotten Realms etc are wet and cold. No hot showers. Most motels won’t rent a room to a group of very wet, hard working houseless folks who pool their money to get a shower and a dry night. What Can We Do? A growing number of our CBI Brothers have united around building shelters for houseless Portlanders. We are donating money, time, and some skill to helping to build out Hazelnut Grove into a “no tent” houseless village. Once villagers have moved into a dry, safe, clean shelter Pod they TIVNU wrapping Tequilas house seem to become healthier and increase the energy they can put into improving their life situation and doing even more for the community they are living in. We are building a Jewish coalition to support development of Hazelnut Grove and other sites where housing the homeless is logistically feasible and cost-effective. We have met with representatives of Shaarie Torah, Havurah Shalom, Neveh Shalom and have received a lot of support and great questions. We have an open offer of participation, and support from Marc Blatner of the Federation and have dedicated partners in the Rebuilding Center, TIVNU, Portland Youthbuild, Village Coalition, Catlin Gable School, Oregon Tradeswomen, Benson HS— and the list continues to grow. If you can, please support any of these organizations in any way that you can. Please contact me via email at andrew.olshin@comcast.net if you are interested in learning more. Thanks, Andy Olshin
A Sisterhood Shabbat to Remember February 10th began the Centennial celebration of our Sisterhood with Friday night services. A special thank you goes out to Kate Royston who chaired the event and put the service together. It was a time that brought Sisterhood members from days gone by to our new “Next Generation” sisterhood members. The service included a beautiful rose ceremony that brought Past and Present Presidents together on the bimah to create a beautiful bouquet of roses, showing that “We are stronger together”, a motto we have adopted some years ago. This year we honored Ellen Bick with the “Woman of Valor” award; one that is well deserved. We were honored to have Rabbi Marla Feldman, the Director of WRJ, attend to present us with an award marking our Centennial Anniversary as well as give a riveting d’var on the history of WRJ and how Sisterhood has grown through the years. The weekend continued on Saturday with Torah study, Shabbat service and a leadership training in which we discussed the future of Sisterhood and how to go forward in this ever changing world. I want to thank all the woman who were involved in putting this weekend together, we could not have had such a successful event without you. Thank you also to the clergy for their support to make this all come together. Shalom, Lynn Gelber President, CBI Sisterhood

LET’S ADD THE POWER OF PURIM TO OUR
FUNDS FOR FOOD PROGRAM! For the past several years, as we banged away on pots and pans whenever Haman’s name was uttered, many of us also brought in our unused kitchen gear to donate to families in need. In 2016 we did something different: We brought cash! With the $550 you donated, we provided 25 families with brand-new sets of pots and pans. This approach was an instant hit (no more digging around for that long-missing saucepan lid) and it sent a warm message of support to the people who received the shiny new items. We do a great job raising money for hungry families without Funds for Food Program during the High Holidays. The Pots and Pans for Purim is a smart way to extend that project. We can help ensure that folks have the kitchen tools they need to be self-sufficient and to make good, sustaining meals every day.
March/April 2017
It’s a Purim two-fer: Make noise AND make a great gift!

Save the Date!
MITZVAH DAY Sunday, April 30, 2017 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Make a difference, build community, and have a blast! Join us for Mitzvah Day, an annual event at CBI that honors the spirit of both tikkum olam and tzedakah. We guarantee you will: work on a project that tangibly helps others; meet and connect with other members of CBI; and get the opportunity to be seen in the ever-stylish and very recognizable CBI bright blue Mitzvah shirt. We will start the day at 9:00 AM with a delicious breakfast in Blumauer Hall. After a brief program, we will head off to various projects, either at the synagogue or off-site. Volunteer for a variety of projects – blanket making, preparing food for congregants in need, beautifying our cemetery, cleaning and repairing books, sorting and stocking food and more. Donate food, clothing and books to Sunshine Pantry, ARC and NW Towers. Be on the lookout for the Mitzvah Day signup in the weekly Beneath the Dome and Parent Nus email blasts.
Make everyday a Mitzvah Day!
