THE ROAD TO
Birth to Pre-K: WELCOME!
1
Your journey begins with a warm, vibrant Jewish community, and here at CBI there are many ways to welcome your little one: naming, brit milah, our Mighty Moms support group for new parents, Tot Shabbats, and our Mini Menches program connect our future B’nei Mitzvah students with the peers and families who will be with them every step of the way. Contact Chelsea Ferguson at (503) 222-1069 or chelsea@bethisrael-pdx.org to connect and get involved.

Pre-K and Kindergarten: READY, SET, GO!
Our arts-integrated Religious School program introduces our youngest students to the cycle of the Jewish calendar, and to the richness of its holidays and traditions. Our kindergarteners enjoy their first of our grade-level Family Programs at our Chanukah Fair, where they celebrate and learn about the holiday with their families as they make their own dreidels, eat traditional food and play some educational games to get ready for the holiday!
First Grade: CONSECRATION/WIMPLE MAKING
In a CBI tradition derived from the 16th and 17th custom of German and Italian Jews decorating their infants’ swaddling cloths with blessings that wished the child a fulfilled life, the school year begins with each first grader decorating a wimple with their Hebrew name, and meaningful symbols of their lives within and beyond the Jewish community at CBI. We display these all together in the Main Sanctuary during our beautiful Simchat Torah and Consecration Service, which marks the formal start of your child’s Jewish education. Each child’s wimple will bind the Torah during their Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
4
NEW TO THE COMMUNITY? DOES YOUR STUDENT WANT TO MAKE A WIMPLE? Every fall, our Religious School offers new students who didn’t get a chance to participate in this first grade program the opportunity to make their own wimple. Contact the Religious School Office at (503) 222-1069 for details.
Second Grade: TU B’SHEVAT
Our second grade Family Program is Welcome to Tu b’Shevat. Students celebrate the birthday of the trees while learning all about Tikkun Olam (healing the world) and the importance of treating our environment well. This program is the first of many activism-oriented activities your child will be involved with on their path to Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
6
5
Summer Before Third Grade: PICK A PROGRAM, EITHER PROGRAM!
Families choose between two Religious School programs: our Integrated Hebrew Program, which meets twice weekly, and our Sunday Hebrew Program, which meets only on Sundays with supplemental tutoring in our interactive Hebrew Lab.
Third Grade: SAVE THE DATE
Break out your calendar, favorite scheduling app, and maybe even some tissues, because this is the year families select a B’nei Mitzvah date. You’ll receive a form to indicate preferences in the winter, and your date will be confirmed and finalized at a celebratory third grade family program, where clergy and CBI educators will be on hand to answer any timeline questions you may have and to assist your child as they familiarize themselves with their Torah portion.
7 JOINING CBI OR OUR RELIGIOUS SCHOOL PROGRAM AFTER THIRD GRADE? Give our B’nei Mitzvah Coordinator Emily Silverman a call at (503) 222-1069 or email emily@bethisrael-pdx.org to get started!

Fourth Grade: START STUDYING!
At our fourth grade Family Program, Discovering the Prayer Book, students receive their own spiral bound prayer book and, with their families, learn all about the prayer and structure of our services with our clergy.
B’NEI MITZVAH Fifth Grade: GETTING CLOSE!
8
INTERESTED IN ADULT B’NEI MITZVAH?
Your fifth grader will receive their own Mishkan T’filah Prayer Book and, as part of their B’Nei Mitzvah preparations, will be expected to attend seven Shabbat Services here at CBI. They also participate in our fifth grade Family Program, when they walk with their families to the Portland Holocaust Memorial and participate in a discussion about the Holocaust. They will have their initial meeting with the clergy and continue to practice with their training materials.
9
We offer a two-year Adult B’nei Mitzvah program. Call Bitsie Appleton at (503) 222-1069 or email her at bitsie@bethisrael-pdx.org for details!
Sixth Grade: GETTING CLOSER!
Our sixth grade students are expected to join us for twelve Shabbat services, seven on Saturdays and five on Fridays, and to attend B’nei Mitzvah Training either on Sunday mornings or with a Cantor Cahana-approved private tutor. Each student has their second meeting with the Cantor, where they will receive their Torah and Haftarah materials. Additionally, once your student starts middle school, our Family Programs increase to three Shabbatinis a year, where families meet directly after Saturday morning Shabbat services to prepare for their upcoming B’nei Mitzvah. At the first, families and students come together to decorate and make a class tallit (prayer shawl). This is the tallit parents will bless their kids under on the day of their B’nei Mitzvah. Mitzvahpalooza is the second Shabbatini, giving students and families a chance meet with popular B’nei Mitzvah party vendors. Many students are also inspired to begin working on their community service Mitzvah Project, as the Palooza includes information about past projects as well. The final Shabbatini of sixth grade is Torah Trek, where the clergy and Ben Sandler, CBI’s Education Director, lead an activity-filled trek and service through the woods.
10
Summer Before Seventh Grade: JUST A LITTLE FURTHER!
Enjoy your summer, but don’t forget to practice with your training materials! You’ll also meet with Cantor Cahana over the summer break.
12
Clergy Meetings: THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
Your family will meet with our clergy six to eight weeks before the big day for discussion and review, as well as to discuss your child’s D’var (speech). Typically, a final rehearsal and family meeting occur the Tuesday before the B’nei Mitzvah.
11
Seventh Grade: ALMOST THERE!
Religious School and B’nei Mitzvah training continues. We also recommend attending at least four Shabbat Services (two on Friday, two on Saturday). Seventh grade families programs, also called Shabbatinis, happen on Sunday mornings during normal Religious School hours. These programs generally match the overall Religious School annual theme. The final Shabbatini is always an introduction to our High School program and focuses on the importance of retaining friendships and connection to Judaism.

B’Nei Mitzvah and Beyond: THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
You and your child are just getting started! Plan on a follow up meeting with the CBI clergy in the weeks after your B’nei Mitzvah, as well as for continued opportunities to connect with your community, whether through community service, Youth Groups, travel, or the chance to pass along so much of what you have learned to younger students through participation in our Madrachim (classroom aides) program. Turn the page for details!

Beyond B’nei Mitzvah
BEYOND B’NEI Your Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a tremendous accomplishment, but it’s also a stop on, rather than an end to, your Jewish journey with CBI. Our wide array of youth programming helps you continue to connect with your community, spirituality, traditions, and, of course, the friends you’ve made along the way. Contact Chelsea Ferguson at (503) 222-1069 or chelsea@bethisrael-pdx.org for details.
Sixth to Seventh Grade: D’OR CHADASH
CBI
CBI
D’or Chadash is our junior youth group for students in sixth and seventh grades. We offer monthly events where we can build friendships and explore our Judaism through fun and exciting activities. D’or Chadash does everything from social action projects to laser tag!
CBI
Eighth to Twelfth Grade: PARTY
Portland Area Reform Temple Youth (PARTY) is CBI’s youth group for eighth through twelfth graders. Participation gives high school students (and 8th graders!) a chance to make friends with other Jewish teenagers! The youth group sponsors programs ranging from social enrichment, worship, and social action events. PARTY is the local chapter of the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) and belongs to the NFTY Northwest Region. Through our affiliation with NFTY, we are able to not only connect with our local peers, but also travel to meet people on a regional, national, and even international level!
Eighth to Twelfth Grade: HIGH SCHOOL MIDRASHA
This program is for eighth grade and High School students who are ready for the next phase of their Jewish education and to begin establishing their leadership within our community. They start their day with lunch and socializing with friends. They then break off by grade into their Jewish core classes. Following these core classes, students participate in mixed-grade electives. These classes can range from music to Hebrew Calligraphy! Our midrasha program regularly participates in weekend retreats with NFTY, the North American Federation of Temple Youth.
Our eighth through tenth graders explore what the sage Hillel meant by “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? If not now, when?”
Eighth grade: Students focus on, “If am not for myself, who will be for me?” They spend time engaging in a deeper discussion of who they are and what makes up their Jewish identities.
Ninth grade: Students expand out to discuss, “If I am only for myself, what am I?” They examine how Jewish values and ethics can influence their world. Starting in ninth grade, students may also choose to work as Madrichim (classroom aides) in lower grades to gain valuable background and leadership experience that can be applied to future roles in education and beyond.
Tenth grade:
YOU’RE INVITED! Erev Shavuot and Confirmation Saturday, May 19, 6:00 PM Main Sanctuary
High School Graduation Friday, May 25, 6:00 PM Main Sanctuary
6
Students meet with clergy to explore “if not now, when,” and put Jewish values into action in a culminating trip to Washington, D.C. Here they lobby with the Religious Action Center’s program L’Taken. Following L’Taken, tenth grade students lead the CBI community in a Shavuot Confirmation Ceremony.
Eleventh grade: Students spend the year focusing on comparative religions. They meet with a variety of religious leaders and travel to different religious sites. While in eleventh grade, students become eligible for scholarships to travel to Israel on NFTY in Israel trips.
Twelfth grade: Students meet with clergy to discuss any lasting and burning questions that they may have about Judaism. This course ends with a beautiful Graduation service which is created and led by the seniors themselves.

Education B’nei Mitzvah - Children of the Commandments
Being Human in Our Own Time
by Cantor Ida Rae Cahana Senior Cantor
by Ben Sandler Education Director
Living the remarkably blessed life we do, as free Jewish Americans, we chafe at the thought of being told what to do. Yet, for generations, we have raised our young people to understand that they have a gift in studying Torah and a responsibility to observe mitzvoth, acting in such a way that we each leave the world a better place. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel taught us, “G-d is hiding in the world. Our task is to let the divine emerge from our deeds.” Learning, preparing, questioning, interacting with others in our community: all lead to a greater selfawareness and appreciation. CBI’s B’nei Mitzvah program continues to evolve and include more people of all ages and many differing learning styles. Buzz Lightyear had it right that we aim not just for infinity, but BEYOND! So, whether you are just beginning Religious School or you are an adult who never had the opportunity to study Hebrew, we are delighted to help you ascend the bimah and continue to explore the well of Jewish knowledge for all your life – to B’nei Mitzvah and BEYOND! I look forward to studying together! Cantor Ida Rae Cahana
Welcome, Emily Silverman!
CBI’s New B’Nei Mitzvah Coordinator Emily Silverman, CBI’s new B’Nei Mitzvah Coordinator grew up in Maine, made Aliyah as a student after high school and lived in the Jerusalem area. She spent seven years in seminary in Jerusalem, for the first three years in an English speaking program called Midreshet Harova, then moving on to an advanced seminary program for Israeli women called Beit Hamidrash Hagavoa L’Nashim b’Migdal Oz, where she spent four years. She earned B.Ed in Jewish studies and education and teaching certificate from Herzog Teaching College. She taught elementary school at Beit Sefer Kfar Adumim, a unique charter school in the Judean Hills which seeks to create a pluralistic learning community by integrating students from both religious and secular backgrounds, before transitioning to the role of Director of Education at a New York- based educational technology company. She also, while in college, trained as a tour guide and for six years worked as the lead PR representative to the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, and in that role met and explored Jerusalem with many state leaders as well as well-known pop culture personalities including Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, Madonna, Justin Bieber, Ashton Kutcher, a number of European and African prime ministers, and the Brigadier General of the Chinese military. She met her husband, Ariel, while salsa dancing, and they were married in 2015 at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the site of the Dead Sea Scrolls. In October 2015, they moved to Portland in search of a new adventure. Ariel is originally from Venezuela, and made Aliyah when he was seventeen to serve in the diplomatic branch of the IDF. He now works as a software engineer at Intel. In 2016, their first son, Ori, was born. They still love salsa dancing, and the family’s rich multi-cultural backgrounds mean that they speak three languages at home on a consistent basis.
We began our school year with a theme inspired by Rabbi Hillel: “In a place where there are no human beings try to be one.” With this in mind, our Religious School program engaged in study, arts, and social action as a means of approaching the questions “what does it mean to be human? How can Judaism inform my actions and help shape my vision for a better world?” So who was this Rabbi Hillel and how did his thoughts help to frame our experience in 2018? Hillel was a great teacher born in Babylonia. He came to study Torah in Jerusalem in the beginning of the Common Era and became the head of his own academy. He was known for his kindness and open approach to interpreting the spirit of Jewish law. Hillel formulated the basic rules of Rabbinic logic, which seeks to extract new meaning from old laws. This made it possible to give the Jewish religion perpetual life in that rabbis can apply the laws of the Torah to conditions in various places and at various times. Which brings us, in turn, back to our own application of Hillel’s words at CBI as we strive to define and to act in ways that are human in our own time. I’m grateful to everyone for helping to make this an outstanding year for our students and school community. Special thanks, farewell, and good luck to Sarah Reiter, our Education Administrator, in her upcoming Graduate School studies at the University of Oregon. Looking forward to seeing everyone this summer at Shabbat on the Plaza and when Religious School reopens this fall. Stay Human! L’Shalom, Ben
L’hitraot, Sarah After two wonderful years working in many different capacities within our community, I am taking a big next step in life to pursue a graduate degree from the University of Oregon this fall. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank all my fellow staff members, parents, and students for making my experience so memorable here. This is a very special community that I will always cherish and keep near to my heart. It has been amazing to get to know each and every one of you and to have been involved with the community in so many ways. Thank you for all the support and encouragement I’ve received during this transition, I feel very loved and honored to have been a part of Congregation Beth Israel. Goodbye for now and best wishes for the future! L’Shalom, Sarah Reiter

Developing CBI For Sure I Can Say, I Have Had a Taste of Temple by Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director There’s not a lot I can say about TOT that hasn’t already been reported. So please indulge me while I get a bit sentimental. To say that this event has achieved everything we set out to do might imply there was nothing left to accomplish. Then again, to say anything less would not be truthful. For the last seven years, TOT has raised friends and funds for our congregation while also building a cadre of engaged and caring leaders. From the perspective of a Development Director, it doesn’t get much better than this. To take it a step further, it would be no exaggeration to say the leaders from this group are among my closest friends from CBI. Of all the many things Taste of Temple has accomplished in its short history, the quality and quantity of interpersonal relationships that have emerged from this event make me proud. I share this because I want to give you every opportunity to bring these relationships into your life. From its inception, Taste of Temple was designed to be a friendraiser and fun(d)raiser. This year’s committee, led by inspiring chairs Robin and Steve McCoy, set an all time high of netting almost $70,000. Like other members of our TOT committee, Robin and Steve have been a part of this committee from the beginning. That speaks volumes about the quality people who are a part of our TOT team. There is something about this group that resonates with each participant. Every year, our new TOT committee draws newcomers and experienced participants alike, making it an ideal venue to get engaged and involved. Every year, you have the opportunity to be a part of this amazing group of people; if you are wondering if I am talking about you – I am. Let this be the year you choose to make a difference. Both you and your Temple will experience the impact and that is a wonderful thing.
Together We Have Made Things Possible When I was born with a cleft lip, my parents worried I would never be able to talk. As my mother liked to say, once I started speaking no one ever wanted to tell me to be quiet. So it comes as no surprise that I’ve always had a lot to say. I’m proud to say I grew up in a home that was clearly Jewish; my Judaism has always been a fundamental part of my life. In addition to providing a moral compass that helps guide my life, it always gave me a base from which I chose to build community. In the just over six years I have had the honor and privilege of being the Development Director of Congregation Beth Israel, we have raised over $5,000,000. Let’s be clear – this is not about me – this is about us! I joined the staff of CBI because I was willing to ask members to invest in our future and help us achieve the possible knowing firsthand how transformational being a part of an active Temple can be. Funds are now in place that: help support our Associate Rabbi; ensure that every child who wants to attend Religious School can afford to do so; and there is support for a lead position in our Early Childhood Program. Donors have also helped fund an effective sound system in our Main Sanctuary; beautiful lighting that enhances our place of worship; secured and enhanced our beautiful stained glass windows and put in place handrails that help ensure access for all to the bimah. All these things were projects donors were already interested in doing; I just helped them actualize their intentions. As I step down from the position of Development Director, I hope we will continue to dream together and work toward making all our intentions possible. Look how far we have come; just imagine how much farther we can go by working together, building community, securing our present and investing in our future. At this point, it really is up to you. L’Shalom, Jen

WE THANK ALL OUR MITZVAH MOMENT DONORS We reached our goal!!!! Thanks goes to each and every one of you for helping us achieve the possible: 180 Mitzvah Moment donors. At press time, 183 donations totaling $11,173 have been confirmed. It is truly amazing what we can do when we work together. We can all celebrate our success and the impact these additional funds (plus the additional $18,000 challenge grant) will make on our programs. And of course, it’s never too late to choose to be a donor. The Magnificent Mini Mensches The Mini Mensches have been a busy bunch these last few months! From the Purim Carnival, to Mighty Moms and Passover for Preschoolers- we’ve done a ton! It has been wonderful getting to know all of our families and kids throughout this year, and I am looking forward to spending the summer soaking up sunshine and hanging out with everyone. We’re planning get-togethers like park hangouts and a special area for kids during Shabbat on the Plaza- so keep an eye out for more fun stuff for our littlest Jews! I’d like to say a big THANK YOU to a few people who have helped make Mini Mensches as wonderful as it was this year. Arline Greenblatt has generously sponsored BOTH of our May Tot Shabbats in full. This helps us bring amazing musicians to play and fund the crafts we do each Tot Shabbat. Jill Slansky has been wonderfully generous to our program and an amazing ally in our journey to building a meaningful community for our young families. So, THANK YOU to both of these wonderful women for helping us grow and continue to offer great opportunities. I hope to see you all at an event soon! L’Shalom, Chelsea

Mitzvah House: A Family Winter Shelter at CBI has closed for the season, after months of providing much-needed winter shelter for families in need. Our partners at Portland Homeless Family Solutions report that the shelter served fifty-nine households, one hundred and one adults and ninety-seven children, for a total of nearly two hundred guests. All of this was possible through the flexibility and enthusiastic welcome of CBI members and our two hundred fiftynine volunteers from the CBI community and beyond.

Sisterhood
Or Ami This past March, I was honored to represent our Sisterhood by attending the Women of Reform Judaism’s Fried Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. There I learned, shared, and prayed with more than 350 Reform Jewish women from across the United States and Canada. It was an extraordinary experience that I am still trying to process. I attended many inspiring sessions with topics such as “Programming to Appeal to Women of All Ages,”“Navigating the Social Media Sea,” and “The Power of Partnerships.” Attendees also had the immense privilege to hear Marian Wright Edelman of the Children’s Defense Fund speak to us about how we could help our youth and how we must keep up the fight for the next generation. As well, I attended this conference to accept the 2018 Or Ami “Light of Our People” Silver award, given to our Sisterhood for our program: “A Century of Sisterhood: A Historical Perspective”. Established in 1973, the WRJ Or Ami “Light of My People” Award recognizes exemplary social justice, community service, and educational programming that serves as a model for other WRJ Districts and sisterhoods. The awards are given biennially. Our project consisted of a six panel display which featured documents, photographs and oral histories. There was also a video presentation that included additional oral history quotes and images that supplemented what could not be included on the printed panels. Our project debuted at an evening reception last year. Thanks to Eve Rosenfeld and the Sisterhood Board for helping to make this project happen.

CBI TRIBUTE FUND SPOTLIGHT:
Social Action Funds The CBI Community came together for Mitzvah Day on Sunday, April 29, in which hundreds of members participated in over a dozen community service projects here at CBI and across the Portland area. While absolutely a high point of our community’s Social Action programming, our Social Action Committee is busy throughout the year. Whether it’s providing school supplies, coats, boots, tutoring, and holiday toys for the children at Northwest Tower and Annex, engaging in activism in Salem and farther afield, hosting a Christmas dinner on campus for those in need, or working with community partners to support refugees, Social Action is a core component of life at CBI, and one that is supported by generous contributions to the Social Action Food Fund, Social Action I Have a Dream Fund and General Social Action Fund.
