B’not Mitzvah
Adult Education Adult Education Presents:
Hannah W. Hansen Hannah Hansen will become Bat Mitzvah on February 8, 2014. She is the daughter of Douglas and Gail Hansen and the younger sister of Russell, Sarah, and Mickey. Hannah attends Hazelbrook Middle School in Tualatin. For her Mitzvah Project she is organizing a stuffed animal drive and will donate the toys through Fire Station #12 in Phoenix, AZ, where her uncle Jerry Johnson is a firefighter. Firefighters are committed to providing the highest level of public safety service for their community. They protect lives and property through fire suppression, emergency medical and transportation services, disaster management, fire prevention, and public education. The stuffed animals that Hannah will donate will be given to children during crisis and emergency response situations, such as after a home fire or during disaster relief. The toys provide comfort to children during times of uncertainty or fear. Hannah’s uncle Jerry was part of a team of Arizona firefighters who helped with the clean up immediately following the 9/11 terror attacks. You can read his first-person account in this story from the Arizona Republic: www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2011/09/07/20110907 phoenix-firefighters-ground-zero-911.html.
Three Clergy Shabbat/Sabbath Worship: What, How, and Why? Tuesday, February 4, 7:00 PM Trinity Episcopal Church 147 NW 19th Avenue Continuing their popular series of discussions, the leaders of three major congregations in our corner of NW Portland join in a lively dialogue. You won’t want to miss this presentation by Msgr. Patrick Brennan of St. Mary’s Cathedral, The Very Rev. William Lupfer of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, and Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana of CBI.
Sydney Alana Von Arx Sydney Von Arx will become Bat Mitzvah on February 15, 2014. She is the daughter of Jeff (Java) Von Arx and Jennifer Goldman and the older sister of Devin. Sydney attends Northwest Academy in downtown Portland. She is working with FreeGeek for her Mitzvah Project, helping to collect and refurbish computers for non-profits, schools, or individuals who cannot afford a computer. If a computer cannot be refurbished it is taken apart for parts that can still be used, and the rest is recycled. The computers are completely refurbished by volunteers, who are also trained on how to build a computer, plus FreeGeek offers computer classes for free. Sydney’s goal is to refurbish an entire classroom of computers. She has taken apart many computers for recycling and parts so far, plus she has learned to rebuild a computer. If you have old computers to donate or to learn more about FreeGeek, please visit their website: www.freegeek.org.

Havdalah and a Movie: Hester Street
Saturday, March 8 Potluck Dinner at 6:00 PM Movie at 7:00 PM Miller Room Hester Street, starring Carol Kane and Steven Keats, tells the story of Jewish immigrants who come to the Lower East side of New York City in 1896 from Europe and who live on Hester Street in Manhattan. The story begins with Yankel Bogovnik, a Russian Jew, assimilating to American life, having learned English, anglicized his name to Jake, and shaved off his beard. He is working at a $12/week job as a seamster, the money earned to be able to bring his family to America from Russia. His wife, Gitl, who arrives later with their son, Yossele, has difficulty assimilating. Tension arises…come see the rest of the story! RSVP to Tracy in the CBI office. Prior to the movie, please join us for a potluck dinner! Share a dish from your Bubbe’s repertoire.

Congregation Beth Israel
Our Leadership Not the same old Sacred Space By Ida Rae Cahana Senior Cantor Very often, as I am walking out of the sanctuary after a rehearsal, a passerby will ask if they can take a look inside. They might ask if it would be all right to attend a service – “Can anyone come?” Of course, we know that our doors are open, and once inside, we expect to witness and participate in experiences of prayer. Our sanctuary is also a place to witness great oratory and music. I write this one day before our annual Shabbat celebration of the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Congressman John Lewis will address us, CBI congregational choirs will blend voices with the Northwest Community Gospel Choir, and Pastor Matt Hennessee will join our clergy and dignitaries from around the state. I expect to be instructed, inspired, and motivated to social change by Rep. Lewis. I also expect that the entire evening will be lifted to another level by the incredible music of both Jewish and Gospel traditions. It is
the power of music that transforms the room and brings people into contact with each other. As Rabbi A. J. Heschel reminded us, “Song is the most intimate expression of [humanity.] In no other way does [a person] reveal himself so completely as in the way he sings. For the voice of a person, particularly when in song, is the soul in its full nakedness.” Our annual MLK Shabbat offers us a chance to be vulnerable and inspired to act for good in our community. On a more modest scale, there are three short (free!) concerts to be presented in the sanctuary this spring – more opportunities to experience the beauty and grandeur of this space with great music. The first is Thursday evening February 13 at 6 PM. Flutist Amalia Blumberg and pianist Beth Karp will play selections of Debussy, Ben-Haim, Schiff, and others in a wonderful 45 minute chance to take a breather after a busy day. Greg Ewer and Adam LaMotte will play duets from their most recent recording on April 10, and finally, rock violinist Aaron Meyer and guitarist Tim Ellis will raise the dome a bit higher on June 12. I look forward to seeing you at these three extraordinary opportunities, known as “Music Under the Dome.” All are indeed welcome! Cantor Ida Rae Cahana

Developing CBI What does it mean to taste CBI? by Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director  On Sunday, February 9, from 5 to 8 PM, Congregation Beth Israel will be hosting its 3rd annual Taste of Temple experience. We are honored that over 50 vendors have graciously joined us for this program. In turn, we encourage our members to return the favor by frequenting these local purveyors and letting them know you appreciate the partnership we have established as we work together to support our community. A wonderful and dedicated committee has been hard at work for almost six months planning every detail of this delicious and delightful friendraiser and fundraiser.
Our TOT committee embraces the friendraising aspect that continues long after the event is completed and becomes a game changer for many. House Parties spread throughout the year are designed to appeal to a wide variety of ages and interests, helping our members get connected on a more personal level, for truly it is the connections that help us feel we belong. It is clear our members make our congregation remarkable and authentically vibrant. At CBI, we say we strive to educate our students to become critical thinkers and responsible leaders. The truth is that we are all students, no matter where you are in your life cycle, and CBI provides that opportunity for everyone. CBI becomes your family when you choose to invest in its present and help direct its future. There is no time like the present. Taste of Temple is yet one more way we open the door – hoping you will choose to walk right in, take in the sights and smells, and really get a taste of all that CBI offers.

Education
L’Dor V’Dor From Generation to Generation Happy 2014!
by Deborah Kaplan Early Childhood Education Director This January, we welcomed 4 new kiddos to Beth Israel Preschool. Welcome Aksel, Oliver, Nora, and Sonali! Our enrollment is up 20% from last year, and we have really created a sense of community within our sweet preschool. When you walk down the halls you will hear engaging conversations about where animals live in winter, hear sweet voices singing songs, or see children manipulating clay with different materials. We are halfway through our enrichment classes – art, dance, science, and Spanish. The children go outside every day, rain or shine, to explore and make sense of the world around them. On February 18 we will have an open house at Beth Israel Preschool from 5:30-7:00 PM. This is a chance for new families with young children to come for a visit, see what a day at Beth Israel Preschool looks like, and explore the classrooms.
College, the Kotel in Jerusalem, the Shuk, and many other incredible sights. Several weeks ago, the Torah portion was Parashat Beshalach. It means “when he sent forth,” and it’s about Pharaoh’s decision to free the Israelites and the Jews’ exodus to Egypt. I connect with this portion and feel as though I am making an exodus to Israel. There was never a good time to go when I was younger, but I feel more connected than ever to the holy land. As an adult I have different eyes to see the country with, especially since I have become more spiritual. I feel so blessed to be supported by our community at CBI and cannot wait to share my adventures when I return. I plan to Skype with the preschool as I travel and have the teachers show the children on a map where I have been, where I am, and where I will be going. This is an exciting time for our preschool as we welcome new families, settle in for the winter, and share many more experiences together. B’vracha, Deborah Kaplan
Beginning on January 17 is our Friday Friends Class for parents and infants ages 2 months to 13 months. This is a 7-week class where families can come with their infants and participate in age-appropriate art projects, finger plays, music and rhythm, parent education, and a Kabbalat Shabbat. I will lead this class in the Miller Room. For more information, see the flier posted on CBI’s website at www.bethisraelpdx.org. In my last article, I mentioned that I am in an Administrative Masters Program for Jewish Early Childhood directors and educators. Part of this program involves some travel. On February 21 I will take my first journey to Israel. We will be traveling from the South to the North for 10 days visiting early childhood centers, a kibbutz, Hebrew Union

Brotherhood/Social Action Lecture Series: Israel Today Sunday, February 2, 10:30 AM Blumauer Auditorium Speakers: Rob Jacobs and Hen Mazzig of Stand With Us Ron Jacobs and Hen Mazzig will present a talk covering recent events in Israel and their view for a roadmap to peace in the Middle East. Further, Jacobs and Mazzig will discuss how Israel is perceived on campuses and in our communities and explain their efforts for advocacy in the Pacific Northwest.
Presentation by Ben Murane of the New Israel Fund Community and Service As of the writing of this article, several events are planned for February, but the exact times and places have not been determined because our secretary didn’t show up to our last meeting to take notes, and no one else had a box of Crayolas. However, we do know this much: on February 11, we’ll be touring the Portland Police Bureau Forensic Evidence Division because it’s a fun guy thing to do, and they said we could take home free samples. We also have a meeting planned with Commissioner Nick Fish, who is in charge of the Portland Water Bureau and the Bureau of Environmental Services. Plus, he’s the council liaison to Elders in Action, Venture Portland, and the Regional Arts and Culture Council. All attendees to this event will be given an ad hoc seat on Portland’s city council. Before your swearing-in, please be sure that there are no skeletons in your closet.
Sunday, March 2, 10:30 AM Blumauer Auditorium Save the date and plan to join us for the third and final installment of the Brotherhood’s Education Series.
Check the Brotherhood web site located on the information super highway at www.bethisrael-pdx.org/community/brotherhood for forthcoming updates to these and other February events.

Theater Night Out
Think Spring!
Thursday, February 20, 7:30 PM Triangle Productions at The Sanctuary @ Sandy Plaza 1785 NE Sandy Blvd
Think Plant Sale! Sunday April 27, 9:00 am
Join Beth Israel Sisterhood for a night at the theater to see Triangle Productions’ MEDICARE-fully FABULOUS!, conceived, written and well... acted by Wendy Westerwelle. The show is a series of original stories about aging, faith, friendships, and recovery. How she sees her life, now in her mid-60’s; or as she calls it “the last part before I drop dead.” Some of her old characters are back: including Zumi and Golda, and some new ones, including Soheila, her Botox doctor; Dr. Rodrigues, the dentist; and even Rina, her Israeli boss. Medicare-fully Fabulous! is about the celebration of life after 65 - the world of politics, sex, aging, facial hair, no sex drive, being Jewish, clothes and well...even food. We have a limited number of great seats available ($35 tickets for only $20). Reserve your place for a great night out. Contact Lynn Gelber at lynn.gelber@gmail.com by February 15.
Be Part of Sisterhood Shabbat Friday, February 28, 6:00 PM We are looking for Sisterhood members to volunteer for our Sisterhood Shabbat, Friday, February 28, 6:00 pm, in Pollin Chapel. This annual service, organized by Sisterhood Religious Programming Chair Rachel Halupowski, and led by members of our Sisterhood, is a moving and wonderful experience for all. Would you like to participate in the service as a Hebrew or English reader, or are you interested in ushering that evening?
As winter marches on, think spring and save the date for our annual fundraiser, Treasures in Bloom. We will have locally grown assortments as well as Terra Nova perennials. There will also be a Bake Sale featuring delicious baked goods and a one-day Spring Sale in the gift shop. Look for order forms in March - and keep thinking spring!
Report from the Assembly As if 4 days in sunny San Diego in December isn’t fabulous enough, add the privilege of being able to attend the WRJ 49th Assembly along with the Union of Reform Judaism (URJ) Biennial. Pacific District was the host district for the Assembly celebrating the Centennial year of Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ). The 584 WRJ delegates from 5 countries joined with the almost 5,000 URJ delegates from all over North America. WRJ/ Beth Israel Sisterhood was well represented by Ellen Bick, Daphna Stadig, Shelly Levy, and myself. We attended wonderful and informative workshops, forums, and plenaries. A special highlight for which we are all very proud was accepting the Gold Or Ami “Light of My People” award for the exemplary Human Trafficking Program held last Spring. Only 6 of these awards are given every two years. The Shabbat services, music, and prayer with 5,000 members of our family was truly awe inspiring and life changing. We were especially proud of the $75,000 gift to the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) from WRJ in honor of their 75 years as a Reform youth organization, started in 1937 by WRJ. The delegation of the NFTY kids added a lot of ruach to the services and to our celebrations. It was a great week of learning, worship, connections, and friendship.
To volunteer or ask questions, please contact Rachel at rachel_613@q.com.
The next Biennial will be held in Orlando, Florida, Nov. 4-8, 2015.
And remember, this service is open to everyone, not just Sisterhood members, not just women. Please be sure to attend with your family.
