Original Big Six Leader of the Civil Rights Movement Friday, January 17, 6:00 PM Temple Congressman John Lewis, representing Georgia’s 5th District, will be the featured guest speaker at our special Shabbat service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Friday, January 17, 2014. Since 2007, Beth Israel has collaborated with the African American communities in Portland to present this lecture and Shabbat service honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his life, and his achievements. This highly anticipated annual celebration also features performances by members of the NW Community Gospel Chorus and Beth Israel’s congregational choirs. Past speakers have included prominent leaders in the Civil Rights Movement, including the Honorable Myron Herbert Thompson; Rev. Robert S. Graetz; Rabbi Si Dresner; and original CORE member David Dennis.
A firm believer in the philosophy of nonviolence, John Lewis continued to work with voter registration programs throughout the South. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter appointed him to direct more than 250,000 volunteers of ACTION, the federal volunteer agency. Rep. Lewis’ elected career began in 1981 with the Atlanta City Council and escalated with his election to Congress in November 1986, serving as U.S. Representative of Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District. He is Senior Chief Deputy Whip for the Democratic Party in leadership in the House, a member of the House Ways & Means Committee, a member of its Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, and Ranking Member of its Subcommittee on Oversight.
Rep. Lewis, who is often called “one of the most courageous persons the Civil Rights Movement ever produced,” has dedicated his life to protecting human rights, securing civil liberties, and building what he calls “The Beloved Community” in America. His dedication to the highest ethical standards and moral principles has won him the admiration of many of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the United States Congress.
John Lewis is a graduate of both Fisk University and the American Baptist Theological Seminary. In addition, he has been awarded over 50 honorary degrees from prestigious colleges and universities throughout the United States, including Harvard University, Brown University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
Born the son of sharecroppers outside of Troy, Alabama in 1940, Rep. Lewis was inspired as a teenager by the Civil Rights activism of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. While attending Fisk University, he organized sit-in demonstrations at segregated lunch counters in Nashville, Tennessee and later volunteered to participate in the Freedom Rides. As co-creator and chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), John Lewis became a nationally recognized leader in the Civil Rights Movement. At the age of 23, he spoke alongside the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the historic March on Washington in August 1963, an event in which his planning was instrumental.

Daniel Phillip Lewinsohn Daniel Lewinsohn will become Bar Mitzvah on January 4, 2014. He is the son of David and Deborah Lewinsohn, younger brother of Maya and Rebecca, and grandson of CBI members Peter and Cynthia Lewinsohn. Daniel attends West Sylvan Middle School and has chosen to work with Hacienda Community Development Corporation for his Mitzvah Project. Hacienda CDC serves the Latino community by providing affordable housing, homeownership support, and economic and educational opportunities. Daniel has been volunteering weekly in the afterschool program at one of the residential communities, providing activities and peer mentorship for the kids who live there: www.haciendacdc.org.
Solomon Jacob Olshin Solomon Olshin will become Bar Mitzvah during the 5:00 PM Havdalah service on January 18, 2014. He is the son of Andrew Olshin and Rebecca Mischel and older brother of Benjamin. Solomon is a 7th grader at the Arbor School of Arts & Sciences. Solomon developed his own Mitzvah Project – SoupSac - in partnership with CBI’s Social Action Committee and his family. Launched in January 2013, SoupSac has made and distributed hearty meals of soup, bread, and fresh fruit to homeless individuals and shelters on a monthly basis. The goal is to make a large difference in feeding the hungry population of Portland. SoupSac is comprised of two types of cooking and distributing events: on a quarterly basis at Beth Israel to lead members of the congregation in the preparation and distribution of an impressive 400 meals, and the rest of the year working from Solomon’s home with friends and families making and distributing around 60 meals. These meetings, both large and small, are tremendously meaningful and fun, bringing everyone participating closer to each other - and smiles to everyone’s faces. The project is partially sponsored by a grant from the Oregon Jewish Community Youth Foundation (OJCYF). Jacob Warshawsky will become Bar Mitzvah on January 25, 2014. He is the son of Matthew Warshawsky and Theresa Burks and the younger brother of Sienna. Jacob attends West Sylvan Middle School in SW Portland. He is working with the Zimbabwe Artists Project, a non-profit organization that partners with artists from Weya, Zimbabwe in strengthening self-sufficiency, cultural understanding, and education. Jacob is raising funds to help pay school fees and buy uniforms and sports equipment for children orphaned in Weya. Our Leadership CBI Receives National Recognition By Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana Sometimes, here in Portland, we can feel a bit cut off from the rest of the country. It can be hard to get some direct flights. We don’t operate on New York time. If it’s not foodie or weird, we can be overlooked by a lot of the press. But our synagogue is not cut off. We are blessed to be part of a world-wide movement of Reform Judaism, organized in North America through the Union for Reform Judaism. This national organization connects and binds us with other synagogues and helps us strive for excellence. Every two years, the over 1,000 Reform congregations across the US and Canada send representatives to gather for a Biennial convention. A few weeks ago, Rabbi Joseph and I joined several of our congregants and about 5,000 Reform Jews at the conference, held this year in San Diego. We shared several days of learning, singing, celebrating, and praying together with the leaders of our movement. It was a remarkable and historic experience for many reasons. There are significant transitions of leadership, huge questions about the future of Judaism in America, and highly anticipated “roll-outs” of major programs. But for our congregation, this Biennial had a special significance. First, our Women of Reform Judaism (Beth Israel Sisterhood/WRJ) received the highest award – the Gold WRJ Or Ami “Light of My People” Award for social justice programmatic achievement for their program on child trafficking in the Portland area. This significant program, which featured US Representative Suzanne Bonamici and a performance by the Agnieszka Laska Dancers, highlighted a significant and disturbing problem in our area and in the nation. We are proud of our Sisterhood for shining a bright light onto this issue, when many would prefer to turn a blind eye.
Secondly, on the closing day of the conference, our recent Bar Mitzvah celebrant Duncan McAlpine Sennett captured the hearts of the attendees when he addressed the closing plenary. Thousands in attendance and watching live on TV heard Duncan express his gratitude and pride in Congregation Beth Israel for being the kind of community that nurtured his passion. The video of Duncan’s November Bar Mitzvah speech has “gone viral” and been viewed over 133,000 times. It has received national and international press coverage, and he was interviewed live on MSNBC. In the video, Duncan speaks about how his Torah portion, Vayetzei, shows the marriage of Jacob to two sisters, Rachel and Leah – his cousins. Biblical marriage, Duncan notes, is not between “one man and one woman” as some present, but in fact shows that the definition of marriage has changed over time. Duncan gives a forceful support of the Freedom to Marry here in Oregon, and he has since been working for the Oregon United for Marriage Duncan delivering his speech campaign. Photo courtesy of Dale Lazar Duncan’s speech, given just moments before the Prime Minister of Israel spoke (the first time a sitting Israeli Prime Minister has addressed a URJ Biennial), was held up as an example of how “millennials” are seeking meaning and how synagogues can nurture that quest. The national recognition that Duncan and our Beth Israel Sisterhood received is a reflection of our Temple’s values of social justice, engagement, and connection to our passions. Announcing CBI’s new $1 million Harold and Arlene Schnitzer Facilities Fund It is with great appreciation that we share that Arlene Schnitzer has created the Harold and Arlene Schnitzer Facilities Fund, fulfilling Harold’s intention and vision for CBI to have a fund for repairs, maintenance, improvements, and replacements for our historic campus. A longtime advocate for our campus restoration and development, Harold Schnitzer understood the need for a maintenance fund to responsibly care for our buildings and grounds. The extraordinary gift has been set up as a quasi-endowment. The Board of Trustees may use the income from the Fund for annual facilities maintenance. The principal may only be used with the approval of the Board of Trustees for repairs, maintenance, improvements, or replacements of an urgent nature to preserve our campus. This is truly a legacy gift, commemorating Harold and Arlene’s passion and commitment to protecting and preserving our historic campus for the generations to come. We are extremely grateful and appreciate the responsibility we have to be the stewards of Harold and Arlene Schnitzer’s vision.

Your thoughtfulness enveloped me like a great big comfy fussy blanket. The last couple of weeks were difficult… I had been trying hard to begin rebuilding a life, but gloom began creeping into my head and my heart. Due to the family environment, I had not planned to attend the Chanukah dinner, just the service… Reluctantly, I changed my mind after declining at first… What a splendid evening it was, beginning with the beautifully appointed meal environment made so homelike despite the cavernous dimensions of the space. Elegantly set tables, delicious abundant holiday food and wine. I barely knew my tablemates; no matter. Focusing my attention on them, my life situation faded into oblivion. And wrapping up the evening following the meal was the fun, happy musical service making the whole evening thoroughly enjoyable. Bless all of you. My mother always said, “Life is not a matter of what happens to you but how you deal with what happens to you.” I kept thinking of her words as I read the absolutely lovely letter Anese sent to our CBI staff. And I found myself thinking, who feels better now – Anese for having joined us for a congregational celebration and taken the time to share her appreciation with us? The CBI staff and congregation who proudly recognize this is what happens when we open our doors and our hearts? The members and donors who annually support our congregation so that we can open our doors and our hearts? The participants who join us to celebrate and to mourn? Truly, it is knowing that, in combination, these actions make an enormous impact that should inspire us all.

Happy New Year - Part 2 As Jews, we are fortunate in celebrating two new years - two times to reflect on the past and make plans for a better future. As you know, the Social Action Committee continues to address the issue of food justice, as well as its impact on education and meeting the needs of daily life. We started 5774 by: »» I ncreasing our activities at the NW Tower and the NW Tower Annex, with special emphasis on the children. With your support, we’ve provided school supplies, coats and shoes, and holiday gifts; created a tutoring program; gave a holiday party; and with the Brotherhood’s help expanded the library, giving access to more books. »» We had our most successful Soup Sac program to date - serving over 400 people in need of food. Our thanks to those of you who participated in our first annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Special thanks go to Andy, Solomon, and Benjamin Olshin for conceiving and executing our Soup Sac Program, and to Rabbi Joseph and Joanie Rosenbaum, the other members of our planning task force. Wednesday, January 8, 6:30 PM Goodman Hall WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood is planning a special program for girls in 5-7th grade religious school. The program focuses on becoming a Bat Mitzvah, and it will have several components. Held on January 8th during religious school hours, girls and their parents are asked to participate after dinner. We’ll begin with a docent-led tour of the current exhibit at the Oregon Jewish Museum (1953 NW Kearney), The Bat Mitzvah. The exhibit focuses on the history of the bat mitzvah service. Afterwards, the girls will participate in a discussion, led by Rabbi Rachel Joseph, about getting ready for becoming a Bat Mitzvah and its meaning. We have also invited some of our high school madrichot girls to give us their perspective on the realities of becoming a Bat Mitzvah. Parents are encouraged to attend.

Since 1995, Gordon has worked in the Jewish community in a variety of settings including Hillel, synagogues, and youth groups.
