B’nei Mitzvah Harrison Lazarus Glickman Laz Glickman will become Bar Mitzvah on November 2, 2013 at Temple Beth Tikvah in Bend, OR. He is the son of Marshall and Lisa Glickman and grandson of Harry and Joanne Glickman. Laz attends Cascades Academy of Central Oregon and is working with Partners in Care and Clare Bridge of Central Oregon for his Mitzvah Project. Both organizations provide a home-like environment for people facing monumental challenges. Clare Bridge specifically focuses on dementia and Alzheimer’s patients who need special care in order to lead more productive lives. Partners in Care is a hospice, serving people’s discomfort in the final days of their lives, as well as providing support for the families of their residents. A talented musician who has appeared in concert with Michael Allen Harrison, Laz believes that music is a worldwide language and a powerful and meaningful way to communicate. He visits the agency locations weekly and plays piano for the residents, their families, and staff. His goal is to give comfort and some joy to people who might otherwise feel depressed or hopeless.
Duncan McAlpine Sennett Duncan Sennett will become Bar Mitzvah on November 9, 2013. He is the son of Steven Sennett and Robin McAlpine, the step-son of Chip Kosboth, and the younger brother of Logan. Duncan attends da Vinci Arts Middle School in NE Portland. He is raising money for the California Transplant Donor Network, which provides programs that reach children, adults, those on transplant waiting lists, and health care professionals while also providing support to donor families. Duncan is specifically channeling funds to honor the memory of Nathaniel Ray Golden, a special friend of the family who died in a tragic accident this past August at the age of 10. Through the California Transplant Donor Network, Nate was able to donate two of his heart valves and his cornea to three children in need of those organs. Benjamin Edmond Banks Ben Banks will become Bar Mitzvah on November 16, 2013. He is the son of Jonathan and Carrie Banks and the older brother of Lillie and Stella. Ben attends Riverdale Middle School in SW Portland. He is working on a special Mitzvah Project with both Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel: to collect and donate 500 foreign language books by November 9. This idea came about a few years back, when one of Ben’s friends was being treated for Leukemia at Doernbecher. While visiting, Ben noticed a number of non-English-speaking children without anything to do or read during the long hours of treatment. His goal is to donate books in their native languages to help pass the time. Portland’s two outstanding children’s hospitals serve children of all incomes and ethnic groups who are ill and in need of treatment. Margo Danielle Sidline Margo Sidline will become Bat Mitzvah on November 23, 2013. She is the daughter of Stacy and John Sidline and the younger sister of Samantha. Margo attends Lake Oswego Junior High School and is working with The Pearl at Kruse Way (in Lake Oswego) for her Mitzvah Project. The Pearl is a home for seniors with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, and it is also a rehabilitation center that helps adults recover from surgery or other major illnesses. Margo regularly spends time with the residents at The Pearl, leading fun activities like Bingo or other games and helping to organize events including tea parties, root beer float parties, and movie nights. She has worked with both rehab patients and residents in the memory care area, often just sitting and talking or working on a puzzle together: thepearlatkruseway.com
Eric Jackson Berniker Eric Berniker will become Bar Mitzvah during the 5:00 PM Havdalah service on November 30, 2013. He is the son of David and Susan Berniker and the younger brother of Talia. Eric attends Laurelhurst School in NE Portland and has chosen to support two organizations for his Mitzvah Project. He organized a book drive in October to support The Children’s Book Bank, a local agency that strives to improve the literacy skills of low-income children by giving them books of their own before they reach kindergarten. To do this, The Children’s Book Bank collects, repairs, and packages used books, which are then made available to families in need - free of charge. Eric’s goal is to collect 1,000 books to provide in book bags to 66 families. Through the Remember Us Program, which keeps the memory of a child lost in the Holocaust alive in the first post-survivor generation, Eric has also made a lifelong commitment to be a Guardian of Memory for a young boy, Harry Goldberg, who perished in the Holocaust. As a Bar Mitzvah, whenever Eric does a mitzvah he will do it in the name of Harry Goldberg - may his memory be for a blessing. Happy Hannukah, the “Holiday of Lights!” by Rabbi Rachel L. Joseph Assistant Rabbi Here’s a question: have you ever wondered about the whole eight-nights-one-flaskof-oil story and whether it really explains how and why we light the Hanukkiah (Hannukah lamp) the way we do? Think about it: imagine that one flask of oil did indeed last eight nights. You’d start out with a bright flame, and then the flame would slowly flicker out and become smaller and smaller as the remaining oil was stretched out to fit the eight-day dedication of the Temple. If we were lighting eight lights to commemorate the miracle of the oil, should we not then start out with eight candles and trickle down to one, to remember how the oil lasted before it ran out? If you think that’s a good question, well, I can’t take credit for it. In the Talmud, the sage Shammai proposed lighting the Hanukkiah just that way: starting out with eight, and ending with one, in a re-enacting of the miracle as we imagine it might have happened.
It’s Thanksgivukkah! Unless you’re living off the grid, you must have heard by now that for the first time since President Abraham Lincoln formally established Thanksgiving as the 4th Thursday in November – way back in 1863 – these two momentous holidays will indeed overlap. We light the first candle on Wednesday night, November 27th and the very next day carve into our USDA “certified organic” pastured heritage turkeys (or Tofurkey, if you prefer). There are plenty of clever suggestions about how to merge the traditions of both celebrations, courtesy of most every site on the interwebs. Seriously – Google “Chanukah Thanksgiving 2013” and see what happens. So go ahead and brine that turkey in Manischewitz! Top your latkes with cranberry sauce! Or try any of the other inventive recipes offered on BuzzFeed Food (www.buzzfeed.com/christinebyrne/ thanksgivukkah). And after you’ve recovered from your family celebration at home, plan to join your Beth Israel Family for our annual Chanukah/Shabbat Celebration and Party. Trust us, there won’t be an event like this again for another 70,000+ years! However, the sage Hillel ruled that we light starting with one and ending with eight, and we follow his more joyful, less literalist interpretation of remembering the miracle. One reason that we follow Hillel is the principle of ma’alin b’kodesh – we ascend in spiritual levels. For example: we may turn an ordinary building into a synagogue, but we should not, if at all possible, turn a synagogue into an ordinary building (a shop or apartment, perhaps). Thus, if lighting Hannukah lights is a holy act, lighting two is a greater act than lighting one, and lighting three is a greater act than lighting two. Perhaps what Hillel means to teach us is a variation on the idea that “mitzvah goreret mitzvah” – a mitzvah leads to a mitzvah, which is often understood to mean that once we turn our souls towards the doing of holy deeds, we strengthen and orient ourselves towards spiritual goals, and in a wonderful “positive feedback loop,” spiritual deeds lead to spiritual growth which leads to the desire to do more spiritual deeds and so on. The spiral can also start with study: study leads to action, which leads to the desire for greater understanding, which leads to study, which leads to inspiration, which leads to action! In the days of the Maccabees, Judaism was at a low point, to say the least. Hillel wants to remind us: if your spirituality is at a low point, start somewhere small, but start. Light one candle, and you’ll be inspired to light two. Light two, and it will lead to three. This applies to prayer, to tzedakah, to acts of loving kindness, to anything that strengthens and grows our souls. Start small, and great things will follow. We ascend in holiness and, with God’s love flowing from within us, keep growing.

L’Dor V’Dor From Generation to Generation Does God Understand Hebrew Best? by Ben Sandler, Education Director
We have been having big fun this year at our Sunday morning Mishpacha Minyan (family service) with something new: a Hebrew word of the day. We were inspired by a Camp Kalsman tradition of having the Israeli counselors dress up as superheroes and teach the kids new Hebrew words as part of a song session. In I Have Some Questions About God, one of our religious school books and a wonderful compilation of answers to tough questions by different rabbis and scholars, the question is posed, “Does God understand Hebrew best?” One of the rabbis, Rabbi Elyse Frishman, tells a story of a boy who didn’t know the words to prayers but played music with deep feeling. In that story, the rabbi teaches us that God cares more about our feelings than about our words - in any language. Rabbi Joshua Hammerman responds to the question by saying that God understands all languages equally well, including sign language and body language - even computer language! No matter how we communicate, when people make connections, God is there. He goes on to say that Hebrew is a special language for Jews because it connects us to other Jewish people - in the past, in the present, and in the future - all over the world. In the same chapter, Jewish scholar Joel Grishaver shares a mystical tale of how Hebrew is very powerful as it is the language God used to create the world. We ask the kids, “Do you like the answers to this question? Is one of them close to your answer? Do you have a different answer?” Here is one of mine: When we study languages other than our native tongue, we not only learn vocabulary and sentence structure, we learn a whole new way of perceiving and thinking about the world. When we learn Hebrew in the context of Torah, we discover ancient pathways to connect us to each other and the divine. L’shalom, Ben
Mazel Tov to Ellen Rosenblum on being honored by the Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington with the inaugural Marie Lamfrom Women of Distinction Award at a special luncheon on September 18th. This award celebrates women who have demonstrated distinguished service, excellent leadership, and the capacity to serve as role models for girls. Former Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts also received this award. Ellen Rosenblum serves as Oregon’s first female Attorney General. Among many other achievements, she initiated the local Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program, a Girl Scout troop for girls and their incarcerated mothers, and serves on its advisory board. Norm and Norma Silver whose son Jeff Silver was promoted from Colonel to Brigadier General at a ceremony Saturday, October 5th at The National Guard Joint Forces Headquarters in Salem. He recently returned from a tour of duty in Kabul, Afghanistan where he was Deputy Commander, 9th Air and Space Expeditionary Task Force and Deputy Commander for Air, United States Forces, Afghanistan. His new title is Assistant Adjutant General for Air, Oregon Air National Guard. Prior to his deployment he was the Wing Commander of the 173rd Fighter Wing at Kingsley ANG Base near Klamath Falls, Oregon. Hon. Susan Graber on the presentation of her portrait at Pioneer Courthouse on Monday, October 7. In 1998 Susan was appointed by President Bill Clinton as a circuit judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. She has also served on Beth Israel’s Board of Trustees and chaired the Adult Education Committee. Linda Harrison-Fintzy, who has been hired as Administrative Coordinator for the Oregon Area Jewish Committee. Bryan Hunt, son of Dana and Bill Hunt and grandson of Elaine Savinar, who has been cast in the ensemble of Harmony – A New Musical, a co-production between Atlanta’s Tony-winning Alliance Theatre and Center Theatre Group that features music by Barry Manilow and book and lyrics by Bruce Sussman. The show previewed in Atlanta in September and will be moving to the Ahmanson Theatre at the Music Center in Los Angeles in March 2014.

Progressive Dinner Fundraiser a Tasty Success! Beth Israel Sisterhood’s Progressive Dinner fundraiser began at CBI in Lipman Foyer. Despite the rain and wind, everyone was enthusiastic. Fifty-two guests along with twelve dinner hosts (six houses) gathered as we began our evening with appetizers and a lovely Havdalah service, led by Cantor Judith Schiff.
Michael Wood Richman and I are at OJM most Monday mornings and have come close to completing our work on the material given to OJM, yet we know there are huge gaps in the sisterhood story. For example, we have found practically nothing on the Braille Project, yet we know it was at one time a significant part of Sisterhood’s program. WHO HAS ALL THAT STUFF? Look in your closets. Bring any Sisterhood material to OJM, any week day. We’ll welcome and thank you for anything you bring to us. If you are unable to get to the OJM, please bring your materials to CBI and ask that they be put aside for me. - Rose Rustin
Bikur Cholim: Food for the Body and Spirit I remember when I was scheduled for surgery how stressed I was and worried about my family. Were they going to have enough to eat? Were they going to be anxious and depressed? Would anyone reach out to them to make sure they were doing okay without me? My mother used to call me the “captain of the ship,” and she was right. But aren’t we all - mothers, daughters, sisters, sisterhood members – captains of the ship? Indeed we are. We get how important it is to participate in the mitzvah of Bikur Cholim. We get how important it is to have a little something from our community to remind us that we and our families are in their thoughts. We get how exhausting it is running in and out of the hospital, caretaking, sitting shivah, and mending. Life during those transitional periods is tough. So let us help and help us to fulfill the mitzvah of Bikur Cholim for at least one evening. We have lasagna and, starting in November, vegetarian dairy-free soups for anyone who is ill but needs a meal for himself or their

Guests were given an envelope that revealed where they would be going for dinner and the directions to get there. The goal was to meet new people in a small group setting, so the groups were set up randomly. After dinner, we moved on to the Oregon Jewish Museum to end the evening with dessert, champagne, classical guitar, and viewing of the OJM exhibit on immigration. The dinner planning committee of Ellen Bick, Linda HarrisonFintzy, Gerry Jackson, Sally Swire, and Shelly Levy did a great job. Community Rosh Hashanah Sweets Table & Break-the-Fast 5774 Every year it is Sisterhood’s pleasure to present a display of sweets for our congregants to enjoy following Rosh Hashanah services and serve noshes for congregants to break the fast. This year, as CBI executive director Sydney Baer said, “The sweets were extraordinary; both beautiful and delicious and lovingly trayed! Everyone really outdid themselves.” Toda raba to Leslie Geller for organizing the sweets project. She had plenty of help with baking and preparing the trays.
Social Action Committee Thanks to your generosity, we delivered 42 bags of food and $2,732 to the food programs at Lift Urban Portland and The Sunshine Pantry. This is the equivalent of 11,558 pounds of food. Your generosity also enabled us to provide the children living at the NW Tower Annex with their needed school supplies and needed coats and shoes for all the children. To help these children, on Wednesday, November 6 at 4:30, we are kicking off our NW Tower Annex after school program, where we will provide homework help and enrichment. We need volunteers so please let us know if you are interested in helping these kids. Our first SoupSac program of the year begins Sunday morning, November 17. Everyone is welcome.

Veterans Day Attention Veterans - We Want to Honor You!
Honoring Those Who Served Each year at Memorial Day and Veterans Day we pay tribute to those buried at Beth Israel who served our country in the wars by adorning their final resting spot with an American flag. This simple indication of military service honors the sacrifices of our war veterans and enhances the natural beauty of our historic cemetery. For many years, cemetery workers have placed the nearly 200 flags on the ground plots and mausoleum spaces throughout the property. In the past, Mitzvah Day volunteers have assisted with the task. Recently, we have introduced a new procedure aimed to ensure all graves are properly marked. Over Veterans Day Weekend, a container of flags will be centrally located adjacent to Landau Chapel. Families coming to visit may take a flag so they can personally place it on the grave in tribute to their loved ones.
