Adult Education Presents: The Dreyfus Trial
Theodor Herzl and the Birth of Zionism Sunday, December 2, 10:00 AM Pollin Chapel Speaker: Ron Silver When the French Command Staff learned that one of their officers was spying for the Germans in 1894, suspicion immediately focused on Captain Alfred Dreyfus. There were two incriminating factors: his handwriting was nothing like the spy’s, and he was Jewish. The Dreyfus court-martial was major news, and Theodor Herzl was one of the journalists covering this “Trial of the Century.” As Herzl watched Dreyfus, an innocent man, stripped of his epaulets, paraded in disgrace through the gates of the Ecole Militaire, and sent to Devil’s Island past a crowd shouting “Down with the Jews,” modern Zionism was born. Join Ron Silver as he describes the twists and turns of Dreyfus’ struggle for redemption and the effect on Herzl.

Our Leadership Happy Hannukah!
Should old acquaintance be forgot…and other thoughts of the holiday season
By Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana What’s not to love? Candles! Latkes! Songs! Latkes! Presents! Did I mention latkes? The Talmud talks about Hannukah as a holiday of announcing – letting people know about the miracle of G-d’s presence. Maybe it was about a fabled cruse of oil. Maybe it was about an oppressed and outnumbered people fighting for religious freedom. We sing G-d’s praise, and the Talmud instructs us to let it be known - even going so far as to put our Hannukah Menorahs (Hannukiyot) outside or in a high window to “publicize the miracle.” See, even at an early time, our people were into mass media. But Hannukah is about more. “What is Hannukah?” the Talmud asks, “... eight days on which lamentation and fasting are forbidden.” (Shabbat 21b)
As the days grow shorter, as the light grows dimmer, we open our hearts – and our mouths – in celebration. G-d’s miracles are not just in the long ago, they can be present in our lives today. We don’t need a cruse of oil to prove it. We just have to look around. And have a latke. Happy Hannukah!

By Ida Rae Cahana Senior Cantor
December is a whirl of festivities for most people, leading up to New Year’s Eve and the sentimental retrospective looking back over the year that is past. It’s nothing like the Jewish New Year’s call for honest soul searching and the mending of broken relationships with God, others, and oneself. Potentially, it IS a time to be thankful for friends and community. During Chanukah, we add an insertion to our prayers, “We thank You (God) for the miracles, for the redemption, for the mighty deeds and saving acts…” After last month’s miraculous concert on November 4th, “Ida Rae and Friends,” I am filled with the most profound gratitude for all the people who worked tirelessly on this concert and the many other pieces which make up the complex fabric of synagogue life. And that gratitude extends outward to everyone in the community who came to the concert and opened their hearts and pocketbooks to help us in all these endeavors. Performers gave freely of their time and talent, including our congregants Wendy Westerwelle, Ben Sandler, Arthur Steinhorn, and Ron Silver, as well as honorary members Storm Large and China Forbes! Thomas Lauderdale not only performed without accepting payment, he also paid for his own instrumentalists. Please take a moment to thank them whenever you happen to hear or see them! Taking a breath and stepping back to look at the scope of what we have been doing these last 12 months or so, it is pretty astounding! Sydney Baer coordinated the convention for the National Association for Temple Administration right here in PDX and proudly hosted them at our synagogue for services and dinner. This past June, the national convention for the American Conference of Cantors and Guild of Temple Musicians was ALSO held in Portland, with a gala concert in our amazing sanctuary. Just this past October, our own Ellen Bick was elected President of the Pacific District of the Women of Reform Judaism at their biennial convention also held here in Portland, with services in our sanctuary and all of our clergy fully participating in the weekend. We have literally hosted hundreds of Jewish leaders from all over the United States and Canada here over the course of the past year! Our shtetl of Portland may be far from the major hub cities of Jewish life, but we certainly have shown the capacity, history, creativity, and passion to be a true leader in the world of Reform Judaism - something for which we should all be proud and thankful! I invite you to reacquaint yourself with this remarkable temple and come experience Judaism that is authentic as well as fresh. May this holiday season be filled with the light of appreciation and rededication to acquaintances old and new. Chag Chanukah sameach! A very happy Chanukah to you and yours! Ida Rae
Thank you to everyone who attended Ida Rae and Friends! December 2012

Developing CBI Developing CBI
by Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director
“ That’s right, Linda – There is always something developing at CBI.”
A cute thing happened on Friday, November 2nd, approximately 52 hours before the Ida Rae & Friends concert. While responding to a phone call totally expecting someone to inquire if they could still purchase tickets for our November 4th fundraiser - the caller instead asked if or when they could purchase tickets for Taste of Temple, while wanting to confirm the actual date. They explained that their parents heard last year’s event was so great that they wanted to schedule their visit from out of town to coincide with this upcoming event. This is true proof that what we do here at CBI makes an impression and - we hope - an impact. I am happy to confirm that following the success of last year’s friendraiser and fundraiser, Taste of Temple will be coming your way again on Sunday, February 10th at 5:00 p.m. in Goodman Hall of the Schnitzer Family Center . The TOT committee, under the experienced leadership of Ali and Judah Garfinkle and Tiffany and David Goldwyn, is busy making plans to both build on the success of last year’s event
and blow you away with new and exciting additions. If you have any connections with chefs/restaurants or beer, wine and/or alcohol purveyors that you would like to see featured, please let me know. Watch for details and invitations. In the meantime, we are pleased to report on the lovely success of our November 4th event. We are so blessed to have a Senior Cantor who is both talented and gracious, loved and beloved - in so many ways. The attendance of almost 600 guests was quite spectacular. We are proud to report that that our Tzedakkah Time paddle raise was a HUGE success. Thanks to the lead gift of $25,000 from the Harold Schnitzer family - followed by a challenge grant of $10,000 if we raised another $50,000 – our wonderful guests rose to the occasion. The appeal made by Board members Linda Georges and Ted Nelson and the personal story shared by Past President Craig Hartzman, who was also joined on stage by Past President Jeff Wolfstone, proved that you know the future of CBI lies in your hands. Our $150,000 net from this event is a figure we are truly proud to share. Among the many joys that come with the position of Development Director, the best includes the relationships I get to build with members and playing the role of connector as often as possible. Great miracles happen every day at CBI. Getting to know you and work with you would be high on my wish list for the holiday season. It will change my life – and maybe even change yours. Let’s work together to make it happen!

Education Middle School – Ethics to Action by Ben Sandler Education Director For months we have had our eyes and ears focused on the upcoming election. How fitting that at this season we are holding our own Midrasha elections of a different kind! The middle schoolers are learning about important issues confronting our community. They will campaign and vote on the topic that they care about the most. Then they will spend a series of sessions in an engaging social action elective of their choice that focuses on the school-wide topic. We expect our Midrasha elections to be as rousing as the national elections – but with more humor and candor. The middle school wrapped up a unit focused on anti-bullying, which culminated by filming Anti-Bullying Public Service Announcements that each grade created. Steve Sennett, our amazing teacher/drama specialist, worked with the students for several weeks on this project.
Month (this issue was all over the news), the middle schoolers learned about Jewish values to help them understand and respond to bullying. Many of our middle schoolers have stated that they now feel empowered to make a difference in their school community regarding bullying and not stand idly by. In January, we plan to offer a variety of Jewish-themed electives that the students will select. In addition, we will continue to focus on another school-wide social action issue. The middle school students and faculty have spent significant time building community, getting to know each other, and thinking about what Judaism can teach us about ethical behavior. We look forward to a dynamic rest of the year, where students will have opportunities to choose issues and activities that interest them as we continue our Ethics to Action endeavors. L’Shalom, Ben Sandler, Education Director Susan Berniker, Lead Middle School Teacher

Brotherhood
Upcoming Events
You Say Potato, I Say Latke & Vodka by Scott Schaffer On December 8, the CBI Brotherhood will be sponsoring its annual Latke and Vodka party. This potato-Palooza has been enjoyed by hundreds of Temple members, and this year we expect even more greatness. James Anchell, our former President and now chief storyteller, offered the following history upon which our event is based: Many years ago, right around this time, a band of brave men named the Maccabees wrested control of Israel from a crazy puppet Syrian king of the Greek empire. It was a formula that the Greeks used—they would conquer other lands, leave most of the existing civilization intact so as not to incite rebellions, but collect tribute from the conquered land with one of their own running the show. This was known as the Grecian Formula. But the Jewish Maccabees did not like this formula. They didn’t like to see their kids hanging out with the invading riff raff and dating their girls—many of whom were named Helen. “Hey, I’m going over to Helen’s house tonight,” the kids would say. And the Maccabee parents would cry, “Simon, you get back in here right now! This is the third time this week you’ve been over to her house. We’re sick and tired of all of this Helenizing.” I’m pretty sure all of this is true because I looked it up on the Internet. Anyway, long story short, the Maccabees kicked out their Syrian overlords, and set about to clean up the great temple. And
what do you think they found when they got there? The kitchen in the temple was a mess! It was such a mess that there were only enough potatoes to make one night’s worth of latkes. So they sent a messenger out to the Jewish Albertsons to get some more potatoes. It was only a few blocks away, and should have only taken a couple of hours, but the errand boy, a direct descendant of Moses, got lost and spent eight days in the wilderness before finding his way back. But there was a great miracle! There had only been enough potatoes to fry one night’s worth of latkes. But guess what? The bag of potatoes ran out just as expected! These guys really loved to eat latkes. But, even better, someone found a cache of vodka bottles behind the refrigerator. And there was enough vodka for eight days and more. So they completely forgot what they were waiting for, and so it didn’t really matter. And THAT is why the Brotherhood commemorates this great occasion year after year after year at our Latke and Vodka party. As we have in the past, we will be cooking in the kitchen adjoining the Blumauer auditorium. Latkes will be judged, vodkas will be consumed. Please join us on Saturday, December 8 at 3:00 PM in Blumauer Auditorium. The event is open to all. Mark your calendars.

The Voices of Our Sisters – Our Journey Continues by Linda Harrison-Fintzy As you are reading this, it will be more than a month since the 51st Biennial WRJ Pacific District Convention wrapped up here in our beautiful city. Those of you who attended know how truly special it was to be able to share our wonderful city, synagogue, and clergy with our Pacific District sisters. It was a weekend full of moments we will never forget. The most memorable for me was the voices raised during our Sh’ma Smackdown at Temple during Friday night Shabbat services. Our voices were so loud and clear - how could anyone not hear them? There were incredible workshops dealing with subjects from leadership skills to looking into our spiritual selves. Our Sisterhood was the proud recipient of two Eleanor Kretzer Kavod Awards: for outstanding programming for the Klezmer Brunch; and for community service for “Understanding Our Kid’s Social World: Friendships, Cliques, and Power Plays.” Although it ended more than a month ago, I will carry the experience with me for the rest of my life. I am extremely honored to be a member of WRJ/BIS and to be your sisterhood president.
Wounded Warrior Project
Beth Israel Sisterhood chose the Wounded Warrior Project as its Mitzvah project beginning November (in honor of veterans) through May. Periodically, brochures, online links, and requests will come your way with the hope that you’ll spread the word of their excellent work. Wounded warrior projects are located in many states. Unfortunately, we do not have one in Portland. However, we do have many wounded warriors from the Portland area who are recovering throughout the country. They need to know that we are behind them. Please read about the project at www.woundedwarriorproject. org and pass the information along. Donations in any amount are appreciated and can be made to Beth Israel Sisterhood; please note that the donation is for the Wounded Warrior Project.
I would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ellen Bick, our new Pacific District President! Her leadership will keep carrying us forward in our journey, and we should all be extremely proud to call her our own. I would also like to thank a million times Debbie Braymer, Convention Co-Chair, for all her hard work over the past 2 years (really!) and her tireless effort in making the convention the best one ever. Also a big thank you to all the Beth Israel sisters who volunteered, facilitated and ran workshops, led tours, picked up guests from PDX, and generally went above and beyond all expectations. And last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank our fabulous clergy: Rabbi Michael Cahana, Rabbi Rachel Joseph, Cantor Ida Rae Cahana, and Cantor Emerita Judith Schiff. I am looking forward to the days ahead, and can’t wait to see what’s in store as our journey continues. L’Shalom Linda Harrison-Fintzy President, WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood
