of the best and most generous wineries, breweries, and chefs that Portland has to offer. And on the surface, this would be absolutely true.

The Appetite Comes from Eating

On a deeper level, however, the point of Taste of Temple is to provide you with a true taste of all that CBI has to offer: fine food and drink, good friends, a warm and engaging clergy, and a great opportunity to be a part of a supportive and caring community. As we continually say, we are here 24/7 offering exciting programs and services that nurture Jewish souls, create Jewish memories, and ensure that the ideals of our tradition are real and present each day through acts of compassion. And just like the appetite comes from eating, the more you choose to get involved the more you will find yourself enjoying your engagement. Sometimes you do not think you are hungry and then you take a bite of something that is so delicious and fulfilling, you find you want more and more. CBI is a lot like that. I hope you will join us; I know you will be glad you did.

by Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director

Even though my dad died almost 35 years ago, I can still see the twinkle in his eye as he recited the famous French expression that I quoted above. On the surface, one could easily interpret this to mean, as you begin to eat you realize you are hungry. Yet the more I delve into the meaning of this simple phrase, the more it encapsulates the essence of Taste of Temple (TOT). With over 30 purveyors committed to participating, it would be reasonable to believe that TOT is just about introducing you to some

B’not Mitzvah Our Leadership Lucy Mabel Hernandez

Lucy Hernandez will become Bat Mitzvah on February 9, 2013. She is the daughter of Romel and Claire Hernandez and older sister of Martin. Lucy attends the The Odyssey Program at Hayhurst School in SW Portland. She has selected The Shriners Hospital for Children as her Mitzvah Project. This agency provides free treatment to all children who need care in the areas of orthopedics, burn treatment, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. Lucy is a patient at Shriners. She’s been going there for years and will continue through the age of 21. She feels committed to giving something back to the organization. To do so, Lucy is organizing a drive to collect games, books, make-up, and other products that kids who go to Shriners Hospital will receive as a way to make them feel welcome. www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org

Ellie Rose Kobak

Ellie Kobak will become Bat Mitzvah on February 16, 2013. She is the daughter of Steven and Randi Kobak, younger sister of Sydney, and older sister of Max. Ellie is a 7th grader at West Sylvan Middle School. She is inspired by the work of Project Lemonade, a nonprofit agency that collects clothing for foster children. Ellie is organizing a series of drives to collect gently used and/or new warm winter jackets, sweaters, and denim, which will be distributed to approximately 2,000 school-aged foster children (ages 5 – 20) from the greater Portland area. www.projectlemonadepdx.org

Inspiration Requires Perspiration By Ida Rae Cahana Senior Cantor

Last week, Rabbi Cahana was invited by Ellen Rosenblum to give the invocation at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem as she and three other officials were sworn in by Governor Kitzhaber. Judge Rosenblum is a former board member, a dedicated member of CBI and our WRJ Sisterhood, and a sweet singer in our choir (when her busy schedule allows), as well as the new Attorney General of Oregon. Cantor Schiff and I were present to witness this historic occasion and to “schep naches” (feel pride and happiness). Rabbi’s charge to our newly-elected Attorney General, Secretary of State, and Labor Commissioner was for them to listen more than they talk. And then to walk the talk with compassion and integrity. The beautifully painted murals of our state house provided the perfect backdrop to the morning. Depicted on them were scenes of settlers braving the Wild West; portraits of leaders and workers and visionaries. As spiritual leaders, your rabbis and cantors also are here to listen to you with open minds and hearts. It takes concentrated effort to listen deeply to another person and to hear the potential for sacred bonds. In the next months, we will be creating opportunities for gathering in peoples’ homes as Michael and I did when we first moved to Portland. This time, Rachel Joseph will be joining the two of us as she stretches into her new role as assistant rabbi. Please say “yes,” when you are asked to join us or to host a small get together. “Sh’ma Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad.” LISTEN, you people of the house of Israel. The One God, Creator of humanity, unites us all. We are one people, linked by bonds of friendship, of common purpose, of the magnitude of possibility in each one of us. I look forward to seeing and hearing you soon!

Elise Rosa Gellman

Elise Gellman will become Bat Mitzvah on February 23, 2013. Elise is the daughter of Juliana and Richard Gellman and older sister of Kiana, Jonas, and Apollo. She attends West Sylvan Middle School in SW Portland. Elise swims with the teams of Portland Aquatic Club and has chosen to raise money for the USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash Campaign, a national non-profit organization formed by Olympian Cullen Jones. Make a Splash is a childfocused water safety initiative that partners with learn-toswim providers in an effort to teach every child in America to swim. In the spirit of Purim, which begins the evening of February 23rd, Elise will be making and selling Hamentaschen throughout February to raise money for her Mitzvah Project. www.makeasplash.org

Education Enduring Understandings

These three elements of Torah, Avodah, and G’milut Chasadim are the core concepts of our K-5 Chai curriculum. Our hope is that through study and experiences students will gain enduring understandings in each of these areas:

by Ben Sandler Education Director Over the course of a school year, each grade in our Sunday Religious School program participates in a family program. I recently had the opportunity to help lead a family program for our third grade in which we explored the three strands of our school curriculum: Torah, Avodah, and G’milut Chasadim. It was an exciting morning at CBI, complete with music, drama, photography, text study, and even a fire drill! Following our musical Mishpacha Minyan service and a Torahinspired story by Rabbi Cahana, the parents of our third graders met with Rabbi Joseph and explored ideas and texts about G’milut Chasadim, acts of love and kindness. While the parents met, the kids rehearsed a play inspired by our Torah about Pharaoh and Moses (who according to the playwright was almost named Irving!) with Steve Sennett, our Drama specialist. Following the play and fire drill, families went on a search for G-d with their phone cameras and with much success. They photographed G-d in the ones they love, in the sky and nature, and in places that maybe only third graders can find G-d. They were engaging in Avodah, the work we do to find sacred connections to the divine. At times a struggle, but rewarding for these Portland Israelites, modern day G-d strugglers.

Torah Torah is an ongoing dialogue between the text and its students. Torah is real in our daily lives; it goes with us wherever we are. Developing the skills to study Torah is essential to integrating Torah into our lives. Avodah Avodah is the work we do to find sacred connections to God, community, and self. Engaging in the work of avodah can bring order, beauty, meaning, and insight to our lives and our community. G’milut Chasadim We have a responsibility to perform personal acts of g’milut chasadim to make the world a better and holier place. Thank you to all of our third grade families for bringing donations of food to the family program. The food has been given to the Sunshine Pantry as part of an ongoing Mitzvah partnership with the CBI third grade. B’shalom, Ben

Pots and Pans for Purim Give Haman the “what for” when we celebrate Purim on February 23rd by banging on pots and pans. The Social Action Committee will be collecting pots, pans, and kitchen utensils for the Community Warehouse, which works with social service agencies to provide people with essential goods that turn a house into a home. In 2011, Community Warehouse distributed over 3,000 pots and pans, and we want to help to greatly increase that number. Please bring new or gently used pots, pans, silverware, cooking utensils, and baking pans to the Purim Schpiel and use them to make the sanctuary resound with joy. If you can’t make it to the Purim service, you can leave donations in the bin in the Sherman Education Center.

Our Leadership

WRJ/BI Sisterhood Feeding the Hungry, Feeding the Soul By Stuart Chestler President, CBI Board of Trustees

It is nearly a month since we celebrated the secular New Year with family and friends. As American Reform Jews, we are lucky to be able to mark both our religious New Year in the fall and our common calendar New Year in January. As you may recall from her Rosh Hashanah morning sermon, Rabbi Joseph rallied our CBI synagogue community around issues of food justice in Oregon. The response to this campaign by our members has been both impressive and moving. Not only has our congregation redoubled its efforts on many of our historical fronts to feed the hungry (like the High Holiday food drive and Christmas dinner deliveries to the homebound), but recently our Social Action committee went into warp speed to develop and successfully execute our first annual Martin Luther King, Jr. CBI Day of Service. It was next to miraculous watching enthusiastic CBI members put together a plan in less than two months to feed 250 of Portland’s neediest citizens— those living under bridges, in tents, in cars, and in doorways—and successfully execute it with our MLK Jr. event partner, the Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church. Kudos to those who helped with what

we hope will become an annual event. For those members who missed out, not to worry: there are plenty of other opportunities this year to live what Rabbi Joseph taught us is Transformational Judaism. And now it is time for CBI members to celebrate with their own food event: Taste of Temple! Please join us for an evening of fun, fellowship with friends, and some of Portland’s finest food and drink. After all, it is important to feast and refuel ourselves while we focus on helping others.

Brotherhood Purim (Carnival) It’s Not Just for Kids Anymore By Scott Schaffer What do these things have in common? @@ Having your picture taken on a plywood facsimile of a camel; @@ Dressing up as a king, a hero, villain, princess or (at your option) a camel; @@ Rumpusing in an inflatable bouncy house; @@ Getting your sugar high on with an endless supply of cotton candy; @@ Bowling, throwing, guessing, putting, tossing, gathering, and/or hunting for fabulous prizes; @@ Eating Haman dogs and Hamantaschen with a drink and side of your choice (for a reasonable added fee); @@ Listening to the screams of joy of Jewish kids participating in any one of the above; and @@ Spending at least some of your time between 12:15 PM and 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 24th after Sunday school in the Blumauer Auditorium helping to facilitate any one of the above. If you guessed a PSY Gangnam Style concert, then go to the back of the line. No, it is instead the annual Brotherhood Purim Carnival. Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 24, as this has been the date appointed for the Purim Carnival hosted by your CBI Brotherhood. There will be carnival games aplenty, and the Brotherhood is very generous with the prizes and liberal with the rules of the games. Last year, in the “throw a beanbag through the hole” booth, I allowed my son to creep closer and closer until his hand was hovering over the crevasse into which he dropped the beanbag. Prize for him! In another situation, I saw a kid use his whole body as a bowling ball to knock over all the pins. Prize for that kid, too! I saw two year olds place a golf ball in the hole. Prize! I saw a teenager throw a hoop around a peg from halfway across the gym. Prize! I saw a fellow Brotherhood member take one too many trips to the cotton candy machine. Prize! And tummy ache.

a smile on your face and a new jaunt to your step. I look forward to seeing you all there. And one final postscript about a prior Brotherhood event – the Trailblazers extravaganza. This is the sixth year that the Brotherhood has descended en masse to a Blazers game for shared fun and frivolity, and it is the sixth fifth-and-a-half time that the Blazers have emerged victorious from such an event (the Blazers having scored more points than the OKC Thunder in the first half, but ultimately losing the game in a last minute heartbreaker). With such a record, it is a wonder that Paul Allen has not contacted us directly for a permanent half-price suite to ensure continued good luck with the team. This latest January event had us in the Club level, escorted in early, and with a private dining area set aside for us for an all-you-can-eat buffet. It’s a special treat, and we hope to have even more participation next year. Although you do not have to be a member of the CBI Brotherhood to enjoy any of these events, or attend our meetings, know that your participation helps us in our goal of promoting “Community and Service” by fostering fellowship and providing a service, social, recreational, and educational medium for the Jewish men of the community. Should you wish to be a member, or to help out on any of these events, please contact me (the President of said august organization) at scott@techlaw.com. And should you wish to help directly with the Purim Carnival, contact me ahead of time and meet me in Blumauer auditorium at 10am the morning of the event. I look forward to seeing you there.

The Purim Carnival is a tradition at CBI that brings many generations together. Whether you wish to experience the true joy of children, to speak with your fellow congregants, or try your hand at one of the many games, Purim is truly an event to be enjoyed by those of all ages. Either way, I guarantee
