Marisa Steinberg Marisa Steinberg will become Bat Mitzvah on February 6, 2016. She is the daughter of Lance and Marisela Steinberg and younger sister of Adriana and Gabriela. For her Mitzvah Project, Marisa will work with CBI congregant Bobbie Goldstein to design and send cards to CBI members honoring special occasions, welcoming them to the congregation, or providing support in their times of need.
Isabelle Schafer Isabelle Schafer will become Bat Mitzvah on February 14, 2016. She is the daughter of Andrew and Valerie Schafer, and older sister of Jonah. For her Mitzvah Project, she is working with Sunshine Pantry, where she has long held an interest in volunteering. Sunshine Pantry’s mission is to “help those in need make it through horrible times,” by giving food, clothing, toiletries, housewares and toys to families, children, the unemployed, the working poor, single moms, seniors on fixed incomes, as well as community institutions in need around the SW Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, and Tigard areas.

Emma Lindner will become Bat Mitzvah on February 27, 2016. She is the daughter of Jonathan and Marilyn Lindner and attends the Catlin Gabel School. Emma is working with the Children’s Book Bank for her Mitzvah Project. The Children’s Book Bank collects, cleans, and gives books to children who need them, with the goal of providing six to seven books per child to low income families. Drawn to the project for its capacity to give children a chance to learn and improve their reading skills, Emma plans to collect over two hundred books and to visit the book bank monthly to prepare those books for delivery to children. www.childrensbookbank.org
Initial Meeting of the Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group
The Dreyfus Affair Wednesday, February 3, 7:00 PM Pollin Chapel Presenter: Rabbi Daniel Isaak Advance sign-ups requested. Rabbi Daniel Isaak shares his memorabilia and leads a seminar discussion of the Dreyfus Affair, a fascinating history that raises questions relevant today. In 1894, the French concluded that the Germans had access to French military secrets. Suspicion fell on Captain Alfred Dreyfus, because he was a Jew and was from Alsace, an area lost to Germany 24 years earlier. The Affair turned on considerations of innocence or guilt, but also on whether Jews could be seen as loyal to France and ultimately whether the life of an innocent man was expendable in order to preserve the honor of the French Military. Theodore Herzl, a foreign journalist covering the trial, was so shocked by the blatant anti- Semitism on the streets of liberal Paris that he concluded that only in a country of their own could Jews live as equals. An Officer and A Spy, by Robert Harris, a work of historical fiction was CBI Book Group’s January read and will be a helpful introduction or refresher, though not necessary for participating in this seminar.

A Call To Our Community by Ilene Davidson, Engagement Task Force Chair As Rabbi Joseph so eloquently told us at our Rosh Hashanah services, it is in our home at Congregation Beth Israel that we sustain and continue an ancient tradition that has defined us as Jews, comforted us through centuries of pain, and given us the language of rejoicing in the most beautiful moments in our lives. We are about being together, both inside and outside this building, and looking out for one another. CBI is our home and our community. But it is only community if WE are willing to say “Hineinu, we are here!”, and become immersed in community. “Hineinu” is about being committed to making a difference, to being a part of community. A community not only nurturing the individual soul, but also awakening in us a sense of connectedness to and responsibility for one another. We cannot be Jewish alone. We cannot say Hineinu alone. The point of a synagogue community is that we are meant to support each other - it’s a place where we can bring our entire selves - all of our emotions - all of our strengths and weakness - our hopes and fears. CBI is about US. We are here because WE are here. A community is beyond the sum of its parts because a real community answers the needs, practical as well as social and spiritual, of its members - among them the need to need one another. We are blessed to be a large and diverse community and CBI already has many engaging and enlightening programs to stimulate our minds and stir our souls. But for many of us, it can be hard to connect with people beyond those we already know. Many of us believe that CBI is so large that it’s difficult to connect to others - to build the relationships that make a real difference in our lives. It is our hope to address this concern in many different ways - to recognize that each of us is valued, that each of us is an essential part of this community, and that each of us recognizes the kedusha, the sanctity, of one another. Based on this hope, at the request of the Board of Trustees, a number of congregants, with the guidance of our clergy, have come together to foster and nourish our community, to grow our efforts to engage in acts of bikkur cholim, taking care of the sick, cooking meals for one another, being ambassadors for our community; greeting people at Shabbat services, and providing opportunities for our congregants to come together in many different ways. We are appropriately calling this endeavor, “Hineinu.”
Answering the Call by Cantor Ida Rae Cahana, Senior Cantor and Rabbi Rachel L. Joseph, Associate Rabbi This month we read from the book of Exodus about the gifts that the people of Israel bring to create a mishkan, movable sanctuary. This mishkan (imagine a tiny model of our beautiful temple!) would be carried through all the unimaginable days of hardship and unexpected beauty that forged a visionary people from a mass of the downtrodden. A call went out for contributions and this rag-tag group of former slaves scrounged around and came up with bits of gold, bronze, royal blue cloth. Like a huge tapestry, each person contributed a tiny bit until Moses had to ask them to STOP; the new mishkan was overflowing…
You’ve already been introduced to one aspect of this through the initiative of Bob Kravitz and Bobbie Goldstein who created our Caring Community. Our Caring Community is hard at work, creating opportunities for B’nei Mitzvah projects and support groups for widows and caregivers caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. We are now pleased to introduce the Caring Community’s newest endeavor, Neighborhood Circles. To help us get to know each other better, we have divided the members of our congregation into eight geographical groups Neighborhoods Circles. The purpose of these Circles is to encourage you to connect with others from CBI within your neighborhood in ways that are totally up to each of you. When a need arises in the neighborhood; a member may need a ride, a meal, shiva support, etc., an email will be sent from the CBI office to your Neighborhood Circle. You may choose to meet that need but are under no obligation to do so. Congregants within Neighborhood Circles may also want to organize other things for the neighborhood: informal gatherings at someone’s house, pot-luck meals and gatherings for Chanukah, breakfasts, Havdalahs, Passover Seders, helping with carpooling or when meals are needed in times of illness, bereavement, or celebratory occasions, such as new births. This is an exciting program and we want you to learn how you can make it a success! You will be receiving an email shortly describing the Neighborhood Circles in greater detail. Our Steering Committee will be there to welcome you and provide more information. As we invest in one another and accept responsibility for creating the community we want, each of our lives will be enriched. It will be a night you won’t want to miss!
We are not asking you for dolphin skins to decorate our ark, we are inviting you to answer the call of “Hineinu,” from our Engagement Task Force chair, Ilene Davidson, as together we build our own spiritual mishkan, our congregation’s heart center. Ilene has beautifully expressed the hopes and dreams embodied in Rabbi Joseph’s High Holiday sermon as she stewards this task force. These ideals of taking care of each other, building community, and really being there for each other every step of life’s journey, can become our congregation’s reality. Rabbi Joseph, Ilene, and Cantor Cahana, along with all of the Hineinu Task force cohort are ready to answer your questions. To get us all started, as part of our Shabbat service on February 26th, we will engage in some study and conversation about the specifics of the task force, its components, and how you can become involved. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at this special Shabbat service; join us prior to it for a glass of wine and linger after to share in food and conversation. People often ask me why I continue to work. I do this work because I can, because I want to make things happen and because my work with CBI fulfills me on so many levels and in so many ways. Being a part of CBI in a meaningful way adds life to each of my days. I love the stories shared by others – why they get involved or what being involved means to them. I kvell when a committee gathers and I think I had something to do with connecting the people who are gathering for the same purpose. I thrill when a member tells me how their life has been changed by the people they have met through CBI or through CBI experiences.
Many elements go into making an organization such as Congregation Beth Israel successful. The two with which I am most often involved are human and financial or time and money. It’s an absolute misconception to believe you have to have an abundance of either to accomplish anything. This could not be further from the truth. So the saying you can make excuses or make it happen really resonates with me. As they say – give a busy person something to do and they will get it done. Among the many things for which I am grateful is the opportunity to work with people who choose to make a difference – people who make it happen. From our annual fall fundraiser to our Taste of Temple V friendraiser and fun(d)raiser, from our treasured Legacy Circle Donors to our Every Family Initiative Campaign, we at CBI are blessed with many supporters who choose to make an impact with a financial gift. We are also fortunate to have a broad spectrum of members with diverse interests and skills who are working diligently to be certain CBI offers a multitude of
In this month where we celebrate love – I can honestly say I love what I get to do, choose to do, and am privileged to do. For me, if you want to make something happen - there are no excuses for not acting upon that desire. I welcome the chance to make something happen together. The Beatles said it best:

Education Early Childhood Engagement By Ben Sandler Education Director On the first Saturday of each month we host our TOT Shabbat service for families with children ages birth through six years young! We pack a lot of joy into these thirty minute services. This past month we had a raucous time with the kids, parents, grandparents, our clergy, and song leader, Kim Schneiderman. We danced; we sang; we played musical instruments and parachute games as we told the story of crossing the sea to freedom. Following the service, we shared a beautiful Oneg Shabbat together and the kids created their own tzedakkah boxes. The service started at 9:00 AM and it was about 12:30 PM when our last family left campus saying, “see you at the Pajama Havdalah in a couple weeks at Rabbi Joseph’s house!” events. At these events, our clergy play prominent roles. They’ve led storytelling at Sukkot celebrations at Sauvie Island, and hosted events for young families in their homes and around our community. Other on-ramps to involvement include our beautiful monthly Saturday Tot Shabbat experiences, our monthly Sunday ECE programs, and our new weekly Sunday Pre-K class, where you’ll spy our Pre-K kids dancing and singing during Mishpacha Minyan and experiencing the fun of our arts integrated Religious School with new Jewish friends from around the city.
As we continue to meet new families with young children and welcome them into our sukkot shalom, please be an ambassador for us by inviting friends and encouraging people to connect with other families here at CBI. Our preschool registration for next school year is now open for synagogue members and returning families, and will soon be open to the Greater Portland Community. If you know a young family looking for a great first school experience for their son or daughter, please encourage them to contact us in the education office for a school tour. If you know a family not specifically looking for a preschool but looking to connect to other young Jewish families, please encourage them to contact us so that we may invite them to our next Early Childhood Engagement event and help them make new friends.
We are in the midst of an exciting 18 month national Community of Practice (CoP) cohort through the Union of Reform Judaism “Building a Brand: Excellence in Reform Movement Early Childhood Education,” guided by the goals of Joyful Family Engagement and Seamless Synagogue Integration, to help us create more pathways of connection to our 21st century families. Through our participation in this national cohort, more opportunities and strategies to engage young families continue to emerge as we learn from each other about what communities around the country are doing to welcome young families, encourage community building, and creating wonderful multi-generational memories together. There are so many ways for families with young children to connect with our community, and we would love for you to help spread the word about them. One great option is through our outstanding preschool program, which provides daily and intensive contact time with teachers, staff and clergy. For each of our participating children, his or her first formal educational experience is in a Jewish classroom, giving them the chance to celebrate Shabbat together every Friday with our clergy, talented song leaders, parents, and teachers. Young Jewish families walk through our doors each day for a joyful, immersive experience. Other ways families can connect to each other and CBI is through our partnership with PJ Library this year for ECE

Gun Violence Prevention Advocacy at CBI This year, Oregon has seen success with gun violence prevention with the passage of a background check bill, a success tempered by the tragedy of the Umpqua College shootings. As part of our ongoing advocacy project here at CBI, we’ve welcomed major speakers to our Shabbat Services to give their insights on this issue. Portland’s former Chief of Police, Mike Reese, gave us the facts about gun violence in our community, noting that while gun violence has decreased in recent decades, about 30,000 people in the US each year are killed by guns and 18,000 of those are suicides. Chief Reese also spoke of his support of the recent law expanding background checks to cover all loopholes for gun purchases in the state of Oregon, and addressed banning assault weapons and large capacity magazine clips, implementing a mandatory waiting period before a gun sale and improving access to mental health services. CBI also welcomed Jake Weigler, who is a principal at Hilltop Public Solutions and a consultant to the Oregon Alliance for Gun Safety. The Oregon Alliance coordinates work among the groups working on gun violence following the tragedies at Sandy Hook Elementary and Clackamas Town Center. It now includes over fifty health care, law enforcement, and educational, and faith community organizations across Oregon. His talk focused on gun violence prevention, and touched on common sense gun violence prevention laws, and ways that parents can approach the issue gun violence prevention and gun security with other parents. On the third anniversary of Sandy Hook on December 13, 2015, CBI members joined hundreds of people for the Orange Walk to End Gun Violence, and stood out in the rain to hear from Oregon Governor Kate Brown, Portland Mayor Charlie Hales, and families of victims of gun violence.

In the event of severe weather, especially when city officials advise drivers to stay off the roads, our offices may close and programming may be rescheduled. Should this happen, we will post notice of closures on flashalert.net, on our own webpage, and will notify congregants via email (so please check with our office to make sure we have your most up-to-date email address). Please also note that our Education Department follows the lead of Portland Public Schools; when they close, we close.
