“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Established 1858
Honor the Life and Legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Friday, January 18, 6:00 PM Please join us for our annual service commemorating Dr. King’s undying message of equality and civil rights. We welcome Rabbi Israel “Si” Dresner as the featured guest speaker at this year’s celebration, which also features performances by members of the NW Community Gospel Choir and Beth Israel’s conRabbi Israel Dresner gregational choirs. Past speakers have included prominent leaders in the Civil Rights Movement, including the Honorable Myron Herbert Thompson; Rev. Robert S. Graetz; and original CORE member David Dennis. Rabbi Dresner – who is sometimes referred to as “the most arrested Rabbi in America” for his protests during the Civil Rights era – participated in the 1961 Interfaith Freedom Ride from Washington, DC to Tallahassee, FL, along with nine other clergy members. Testing tolerance along the route, often in the face of hateful protests with little police protection, the Tallahassee Ten, as they became known, were ultimately arrested for sitting in a segregated restaurant at the airport before flying home. Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Rabbi Dresner graduated from the University of Chicago in 1950 and was ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute
of Theology. Following his first Freedom Ride in 1961 – and after serving a brief jail term for the arrest – he continued to champion civil rights activism as a prominent spiritual leader and was arrested three more times. While serving as the first full-time rabbi for Temple Sha’arey Shalom in Springfield, NJ, he became good friends with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who spoke at the Reform synagogue twice. Dr. King later asked Rabbi Dresner and other members of the clergy to help desegregate a town in Georgia, leading to a group arrest of the 75 interfaith leaders. Rabbi Dresner was featured in the book Freedom Rides: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice by University of South Florida Professor Raymond Arsenault. This book is the basis for the riveting documentary Freedom Riders, directed by award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson, which originally aired on PBS in May 2011. He retired from the pulpit in 1996 and currently Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rabbi Dresner resides in Wayne, NJ. This event has been generously underwritten by the Carolyn G. and Millard S. Rosenblatt Lecture Fund, an endowment established in 1986 to support lectures focusing on Contemporary Jewish Problems or Topics. Past speakers have included noted author Anita Diamant and attorney Lawrence Kaye.

could attract quality purveyors by getting them to support our community in return for us encouraging you, our members, to support their venues and products.
Fundraising, Fun-raising, Friend-raising and Funder-raising
The TOT event also includes a very different kind of Mitzvah Moment – or as the chairs refer to it, Mitzvah Minute – which recognizes that the younger generation wants to develop other pathways for being generous, rather than a paddle raise. Officially, this mitzvah opportunity is referred to as Recipe for Success. Your donation helps CBI continue to offer exciting programs and services that nurture Jewish souls, create Jewish memories, and ensure that the ideals of our tradition are real and present each day through acts of compassion.

Planning our 2nd annual Taste of Temple (TOT) for Sunday, February 10th is challenging in a very exciting way. MLK, Jr. Day of Service Day of Service
By Rachel L. Joseph Assistant Rabbi In December, I accompanied our 10th grade confirmation class to Washington, DC as part of the L’Taken Seminar hosted by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. While in DC, we learned the value of advocacy and explored the connection between our Jewish values, social justice, and specific public policy issues. We also visited the National Holocaust Museum and toured the National Mall, making an important stop at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Memorial. A very impressive monument and tribute to the great civil rights leader, his statue is surrounded by several of his most significant quotes. One, in particular, caught my eye: “I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits” (1964). Almost 50 years later, his words still inspire us to action. During the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana, we launched our congregational commitment to the social action theme addressing issues of hunger and food insecurity. Our community came together, collected, and donated over one ton of food for Lift Urban Portland’s food pantry. Another New Year is upon us, the secular New Year 2013, and we continue to commit as a community to alleviating hunger in our neighborhood, our city, our nation, and around the world. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” On January 21, we have a special opportunity to join with members of Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church for a Day of Service. We will gather together in Goodman Hall to assemble food for people in our city who are hungry. With the MLK Day of Service, we have projects planned for all ages and hope your whole family will join us at Temple! This is a day ON, a day to practice the ideals of tikkun olam, repairing our world, and to honor the teachings of Dr. King in a rewarding, congregational event to help those in need in our community. Rabbi Rachel Joseph
More MLK, Jr. Events We invite our extended Midrasha community of parents, siblings and grandparents to join the high school students on Wednesday evening, January 16th, when Ron Silver will be joined by Rabbi Israel Dresner for a discussion of civil rights and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Pollin Chapel, following t’filah, for what promises to be a fascinating event. We will also welcome the rousing voices of the NW Community Gospel Choir to lead us in a few songs. Rabbi Cahana will again be giving the invocation at the Drum Major Ecumenical Service at Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church on Sunday, January 20th at 3:00 p.m. This service honors the memory of Dr. King and follows his enduring theme of Living the Dream. Rabbi Cahana has participated in this service since 2008, a guest of Pastor Matthew Hennessee, VAFBC’s spiritual leader. All the community is welcome to attend: 3138 N. Vancouver Avenue in Portland.

A historical perspective on the nature of the Jewish State and its future. Sunday, January 13, 10:00 AM Pollin Chapel Speaker: Dr. Nina S. Spiegel This session will examine the development of Israeli society and culture as we know it today. What kind of society did Jews aim to create in the pre-state era, and how has it shifted over time? Why was the sense of community so important, and how was it fostered? Do the dramatic social protests in the streets of Israel’s major cities over the past year, as well as debates over who should serve in the Israeli army, represent a break from or a continuation of Israeli national tradition? With Dr. Nina S. Spiegel, of the Department of Judaic Studies at Portland State University, we will examine these questions and more as we uncover how Israel came to be the country it is today.

Education A Voice for Social Justice by Ben Sandler Education Director I have just returned from Washington, DC along with eight members of our confirmation class and fellow chaperones Rabbi Cahana and Rabbi Joseph. We participated in the L’Taken Seminar hosted by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, the movement’s Washington office. Over the course of four days, each student learned how to become an effective lobbyist and became knowledgeable on a variety of issues on which the Reform movement has taken a specific stance. Our CBI students chose to lobby on stem cell research, reproductive rights, LGBT rights, and nuclear disarmament. In addition to participating in the lobbying component of the seminar, we visited the Holocaust Memorial Museum and the MLK Memorial, explored and dined out in Georgetown, toured the Smithsonian American History and Air and Space Museums, held a Havdallah service on the Jefferson Memorial, and took a tour of the Capitol.
This was the largest L’Taken Seminar in the history of the program with four hundred and twenty five students coming together from around the country to connect their Jewish values to social action. One of the Rabbis from another group spoke during a prayer service about how she felt like the kids were participating in prophetic Judaism. I can understand where she was coming from. When our students have the opportunity to not only learn about social justice issues but also participate in being a voice for social justice in our nation’s capitol, a light turns on within them that will stay on for a long time. We can and should feel proud of the social justice work of our movement and our efforts for each generation to stand on the shoulders of those who came before them and stand up for justice. As RAC program director Rabbi Michael Namath explained in his closing remarks to the group following the lobbying on the Hill, we all love super heroes and we can each be a super hero with our words. Our words have the superpower to stand up for the vulnerable, to stand up for justice, and to transform lives.
6
We are so very proud of how hard the confirmation class prepared for the lobby visits and spoke about why the issues they chose were important to our country and to the Jewish people, sharing personal stories and being super heroes by making a legislative ask to congressional members. To check out more fun photos and stories from our trip, go to cbi2012@blogspot.com, and for more information on the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, check out rac.org. B’shalom, Ben
