Ezra Polesky will become Bar Mitzvah at the 5:00 PM Havdalah service on July 4th. He is the son of Liz Field and Jared Polesky and attends the Catlin Gabel School. Ezra has chosen to work with the Audubon Society of Portland for his Mitzvah Project. The Audubon Society promotes the understanding, enjoyment, and protection of native birds, other wildlife, and their habitats. Ezra shares: “The goal of my Mitzvah Project is to help feed and care for orphaned and injured baby birds, so that they can grow strong and be released back into the wild. I’ve been going to Portland Audubon since I was a baby, visiting the ‘ambassador birds,’ walking on the trails, and attending camps. It’s exciting to be able to help out in the Wildlife Care Center!” Find out more at audubonportland.org.

Isaac Abrams Isaac Abrams will become Bar Mitzvah on July 11th. He is the son of Hal Abrams and Jennifer Lowery and younger brother of Cynthia and Lilah. Isaac attends Riverdale Grade School and is working with Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation for his Mitzvah Project. He has overseen a number of soccer clinics for younger children, supporting the work of the LOPR to encourage youth athletics in greater Lake Oswego. Josh Erickson Josh Erickson will become Bar Mitzvah on July 18th. He is the son of Michael and ilene Erickson. Josh, a Cedar Park Middle Schooler, is an avid musician and has chosen to support the non-profit Youth Music Project (YMP) in West Linn, OR for his Mitzvah Project. He explains, “I am raising funds and collecting specific musical instruments to support The Youth Music Project, which provides musical training, lessons, and camps to our community including scholarships for those in need. They fill a gap to provide music and art training in the community where it is not always available in public school. From the experience I’ve had with the YMP, I think these donations would benefit kids like me for whom music is a big part of their lives. Their camps are fun and educational, and they allow kids to have the thrill of performing on stage for an audience. These donations would help this continue for generations. Sophia Suhler will become Bat Mitzvah on July 25th. She is the daughter of Naomi and Eric Suhler and younger sister of Kayla and Benjamin. Sophia will be starting 8th grade in the fall at Lake Oswego Junior High School. Her Mitzvah Project had two parts: she volunteered with the Humane Society last summer and this year, and she is also collecting food, toys, bedding, and kitty litter to donate to the Oregon Humane Society. Long a favorite agency among CBI students and families, the Oregon Humane Society is a shelter for abandoned animals that works to fight cruelty and neglect while building a caring, compassionate community in Oregon. Lillie Banks will become Bat Mitzvah at the 5:00 PM Havdalah service on August 1st. She is the daughter of Jonathan and Carrie Banks, younger sister of Benjamin, and older sister of Stella. Lillie attends Riverdale Grade School in SW Portland. She has selected Monika’s House for her Mitzvah Project. Monika’s House is a local domestic violence shelter and is the only shelter in the Northwest that allows pets. Because many abusers threaten to harm the family pets if women leave, it is a wonderful service that Monika’s House is offering, but they are woefully low on supplies. Lillie is raising money and gathering dog and cat items to help fulfill their needs. Ethan Meyer Brin Ethan Brin will become Bar Mitzvah on August 8th. He is the son of Jackie and Sagi Brin, younger brother of Jacob, and grandson of CBI Member Phyllis Klein. Ethan is a 7th grader at Athey Creek Middle School in West Linn. He developed a love of reading as a young child and spent many happy times visiting the Wilsonville Library, where he enjoyed their wonderful children’s programming and their huge collection of books. Ethan wanted to give back to an organization that serves his community. He realized how important a library is to any community, serving citizens who may not have the resources to purchase their own books or other types of media. Over the years Ethan has donated books to the library that he has outgrown with the hope of sharing his love of reading with other children. Ethan’s Mitzvah Project has involved volunteering his time at the Wilsonville Public Library on a weekly basis throughout the past year and is ongoing. He is a jack of all trades, straightening shelves in the children’s wing of the library, shelving books, and organizing materials for the Summer Reading Program. Ethan has participated in the Wilsonville Library’s Summer Reading program since he was first able to read at age 4. Talia Esther Rosenbloom Talia Rosenbloom will become Bat Mitzvah on August 15th. She is the daughter of Jay Rosenbloom and Michelle Collins, younger sister of Rachel and Hannah, and granddaughter of Dr. Robert Mendelson. In the fall she will be an 8th grader at Lake Oswego Junior High. For her Mitzvah Project she will be helping support Team Ethan. Talia explains, “On June 29, 2013, at URJ Goldman Union Camp Institute, a summer camp near Indianapolis, Ethan Kadish was teaching a small group of his peers how to play Ultimate Frisbee when a bolt of lightning out of a clear blue sky struck him to the ground. Everything changed for Ethan in that one moment. He suffered a severe brain injury as a result of the lightning strike.” Ethan is Talia’s cousin’s cousin, and she would like to do everything she can to help this family in need. Logan Scott Winters Logan Winters will become Bar Mitzvah on August 22nd. He is the son of Robert and Andrea Winters and younger brother of Harrison. Logan is a student at ACMA, the Arts & Communication Magnet Academy in the Beaverton School District. Two organizations have benefitted from his Mitzvah Project: Oregon Food Bank and the Cat Adoption Team, which serves the lives of homeless, sick, and injured cats, providing treatment and homes. Logan explains his project: “I worked for over a year doing service with both the Oregon Food Bank and the Cat Adoption Team, serving both people and animals in Portland. I worked with food repacking to other agencies to combat homelessness, a passionate desire of mine. Lola Rose Shore Lola Shore will become Bat Mitzvah on August 29th. She is the daughter of Peter and Vida Shore and the older sister of Caleb. Lola attends Da Vinci Arts Middle School in NE Portland. She’s taken inspiration from her Torah portion to guide her Mitzvah Project. She explains, “When I was reading my Torah portion, I learned that it teaches about endangered animals and the law. This inspired me to reach out to the Oregon Zoo to see if there was some way I could learn how to help endangered species. I learned that there is a bill before the Oregon State Senate (SB 913) that would ban the trafficking of animal parts in Oregon, especially ivory from elephants and rhinoceroses. I want to create public awareness about the bill by setting up informational displays, handing out flyers, and working with the Zoo to promote support for the bill. by Ida Rae Cahana Senior Cantor It takes an effort in the summer months to do anything extra. All year, other schedules dictate where we must be and at what time and with whom. But ahhh, summer… Especially, as I have come to appreciate, here in Oregon where the summer months are amazingly clear and warm and beautiful. For most, life slows just a bit once the first Hood strawberries appear. With a shelf life of mere hours, these first fruits of summer teach us to be ready to carefully (yet quickly!) pick, cherish, taste, and be grateful. In order to fully appreciate the gifts of summer, we have to make SOME effort. The funny thing about the Hebrew calendar is that we don’t have much of a “holiday” in the summer. No major holidays like Rosh Hashanah, no celebratory festivals like Passover, not even a minor festival like Chanukah. What we do have are three weeks of “sad” days not commonly observed in most Reform communities. From the middle of June till the middle of July this summer, there commences a cycle of introspection and mourning known as the Three Weeks, which culminates in the observance of Tisha B’Av (the 9th of the month of Av),which this year falls on Saturday night, July 25th. It is a time to remember calamitous events that have befallen our people, to sit on the ground and read from the book of Lamentations. In the midst of summer brightness, it is a spiritual nadir. From that low point, our prophetic readings each Saturday morning begin to help us make the journey back to hope and preparedness for the High Holidays with texts of comfort. And there is one more little known commemoration coming just one week after the sadness of Tisha B’Av, called Tu B’Av (the 15th of the month of Av). Its origins and what it celebrates are unclear, but a statement in the Talmud about this minor holiday instructs “the daughters of Israel to dress in white and go out to the fields to dance and the young men would follow after them.” It is clearly a time to transition from sadness to the hopefulness of courting! This year Tu B’Av, our Jewish Valentine’s Day, falls on Friday night, July 31st, with Shabbat on the Plaza. I invite you to make the effort to try something new for your Jewish self this summer. Join us for services outside or in. Take some time to read the book of Lamentations the third week of July and see how its sweet melancholic verses resonate within you. Then bring your loving self to Shabbat on the Plaza on July 31st to enjoy the comfort and love of our community. May this sweet summertime bring the taste of new fruits as well as the possibilities of spiritual openings. See you soon on the plaza!

Our Leadership Mazel Tov and L’hitraot By Sydney A. Baer, Executive Director It is bittersweet to share the news that Jemi Kostiner Mansfield has left our team after 23 years. She was an integral member of our Senior Staff and will be deeply missed. Jemi has been hired as the new Director of Spiritual Life at Cedar Sinai Park, a position that provides an extraordinary opportunity for her to share her passion and expertise. We share her happiness and take great pride in having been a part of her development as a well-respected leader within our community. This isn’t good-bye; since her new position will build our partnership with Jemi in new ways, we are saying l’hitraot. Cedar Sinai is an essential part of our Jewish community, and we will continue to work together, with Jemi providing an additional link for all. When I say this news is bittersweet, the bitterness is the huge loss this will be for CBI. When Jemi started at CBI in April 1992 as temp for our front desk, neither she nor we knew what an amazing journey and career it would be for her. Jemi has worn almost every hat and worked in every department. From the front desk, Jemi soon became our Life Cycle Coordinator, organizing our weddings, baby namings, circumcisions, funerals, and all events in between. She served as Associate Director of Congregational Affairs under Cindy Bambam for many years and then took over the administration for the Education Department for 12 years. Jemi has been a member of the Senior Staff for the past 9 years and has served as our Congregational Affairs Director for the past three years, managing the clergy schedules, cemetery, database, and social media; writing our press releases; helping with logistics and general operations; and continuing to support our life cycle events. Jemi was our Purim Schpiel-er extraordinaire, weaving together her love of theater, acting, directing, singing, and dancing with Jewish celebrations. Jemi is our institutional knowledge and keeper of our memorable moments. She has been patient and wise counsel to many of our Bar/Bat Mitzvah families, a thoughtful collaborator, and our in-house calligrapher. Her job titles have never really done justice to all her contributions to CBI. The bottom line is that she has been our go-to person for 23 years. We thank Jemi for being the best long-term temp ever, and we thank her family for sharing her with us for all these years. It has been a pleasure to watch Jemi grow, but like all good nests, it is time for her to go and share her leadership with others. With the greatest of respect and gratitude, we say yasher koach for a job well done. May you continue to go from strength to strength.

L’hitraot, Dara! Mazel tov and l’hitraot to Dara Docherty as well. Dara also started as a temp (do you see a pattern here?) and has been with us for over three years. She came to us shortly after her graduation from college, was our receptionist, and then moved on to be our graphics and communications coordinator. As with Jemi, these titles don’t tell the whole story. Dara has created materials for our programs and fundraisers, edited our bulletin, created our e-mail blasts, and been the behind-the-scenes administrative support for all of us.
Jim and Michael Richman on the birth of their granddaughter, Samara Rena Barish, on May 8, 2015. Proud parents are Callie and Noah Barish, and Samara joins big brother Elijah (3). Other grandparents are Gale and David Barish of Carmel Valley, CA. Joshua and Janelle Goldstein on the birth of their son, Avery Peter Goldstein, on May 26, 2015. Avery was named at his brit milah on June 2nd. May they grow in health and wisdom and be a source of strength to their family and all humankind.
We are so proud of Dara. She has been accepted to Lewis & Clark’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. Dara’s goal is to teach high school English, and this gets her one step closer to her dream. Her journey will take about 15 months.
Jewely Sandoz and the late Louis Sandoz on the marriage of their daughter, Megan Sandoz, to Zachery Herzog on May 24, 2015 in Portland. Megan is the granddaughter of CBI member Suzanne Friedman and the late Dr. Leonard Friedman and the great-granddaughter of late congregants Milton Margulis and Nettie Margulis.
We will miss her and wish her much success in this new chapter.

We, the Reform and Reconstructionist movements, received almost 40% of the votes which means that liberal Judaism will hold a solid majority in the World Zionist Congress this October. At the Congress, American Jews will have the opportunity to express their strong feelings about the issues close to our hearts, and then work to affect change in those areas. We will be one step closer to making Israel the Jewish state that we know it can and should be. As a reminder, the results of this election help determine our influence in Israel’s national institutions, the World Zionist Organization, the Jewish Agency for Israel and the Jewish National Fund. Our team, led by the leadership of ARZENU (ARZA’s umbrella organization of worldwide Reform Zionists), will now begin the process of negotiating with Israeli political parties and determining our positions based on the power that you, our voters, provided.

Upcoming Events What Does Jewish Summer Camp Mean to You? Ziva: It started with a toothy smile. That’s what I remember my brothers coming home with each day after camp. Grinning ear to ear, I watched as a wide-eyed toddler as they told us of the adventures they had. Camp was in my blood, and I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to go. When the time finally came, it was everything I had hoped for, and I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since. After 10 years as a camper, I joined the staff and continued to make the magic of Jewish summer camp come alive for children for another 8 years. Each summer I returned, I learned and grew. I connected with my Judaism in a way that felt right for me through friendships, songs, and laughter. During the year, school days would go by, and what kept me going through the stress and the hardship was realizing that I was a little bit closer to being at camp. Camp was easy. Camp was fun. Camp was home. The friends I made are the ones I have stayed connected to throughout my life and into adulthood. Not returning this year has been so difficult, but I know that camp will always be with me and in my heart. I smile to myself when a skill I developed at camp as a camper or a counselor manifests in my daily life. The life experience and leadership that I developed is something I wouldn’t trade for the world. It has shaped me into a strong, confident, and compassionate person, and I am forever grateful that my family prioritized Jewish summer camp. Shoshanna: Looking back over the years, camp has been a major part of my life. I have spent 12+ years going to one camp or another; I have been everything from a camper to a staff member to a unit head. That camp became my home, its community became my family. Going to a Jewish summer camp is different than other camps. This is in part because Judaism is threaded through everything you do. Campers and staff learn that Judaism has many aspects and is more than services and religious school. We can express Judaism through art and music, and we can find Jewish values in sports and daily life. Rather than just teaching kids to be kind to one another or to respect each other, it is framed through the ideas of Gimilut Hasadim (acts of loving kindness) and Kvod (respect). Growing up in a very small Jewish community, it was at Jewish summer camp that I was able to meet other Jewish kids, including my best friend. I was encouraged to explore Judaism and find what being Jewish meant to me.
MESHUGANEH! The Yiddish word meshuganeh means “crazy.” Meshuganeh was started for young-ish families and couples (30s-40s) to get together socially and bond over shared adventures. While we often have chaotic lives that lead us to feel crazy, we believe that it is important to carve out the time to connect with our community in a meaningful way. WRJ Pacific District Area Day Mitzvah Project Thursday, July 10, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Magnolia’s Corner (4075 NE Sandy Boulevard) Last year, Temple Beth Sholom in Santa Ana, CA, had a devastating fire that started in the temple kitchen and caused nearly $300,000 in damage. The fire completely ruined not only their kitchen but, with so much smoke, also damaged their sanctuary (Torah scrolls), offices, and much more. Their Sisterhood gift shop, which produced most of the Sisterhood’s fundraising income, was destroyed. Nothing could be salvaged from this catastrophe. We are very happy to report that a year later, construction is well underway, and they hope to move back into their new home by August 2015. This year, the WRJ Pacific District is sponsoring a district-wide Area Day Mitzvah Project to support Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood. As “sisters” in the Pacific District, we have a unique opportunity to do a wonderful mitzvah to help Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood by asking for donations of Bed Bath & Beyond or VISA gift cards to help replenish the items in the kitchen that Sisterhood uses to support their synagogue.
