Gratitude by Rabbi Rachel L. Joseph Assistant Rabbi The May 2015 issue of FamilyFun magazine lists “get into gratitude” as one of the top five actions to make for a happier life. One of the core principles of Judaism is gratitude: the necessity and ability to say thank you. Jews begin their day with two words – modeh ani, I acknowledge and thank You God for having given me the gift of life once more as I awake to the new day. A general attitude of gratitude and thanks makes living life meaningful. Putting this teaching into practice, I want to express my profound gratitude to each of you for making Mitzvah Day such a powerful experience. On May 3, hundreds of us gathered together to build community and make a difference in our world. Whether it was beautifying our own campus or bringing joy and sustenance to our neighbors at NW Towers, providing food for those living on the edge of society or making blankets to keep people warm, working in a food pantry or preparing books for children who have none, each of you made a difference. Thank you. And our impact reaches far beyond May 3, because every day is mitzvah day. To live Jewishly is to live inspired with the optimism that we can build a more just and holy world and with the faith that there is a promising future for all humankind. This is how we view our role and responsibility at Beth Israel every day. Thank you to everyone who contacted their elected officials to support the gun violence prevention legislation requiring background checks on all gun sales; our presence and our voice made a difference in this legislation becoming law. Thank you to everyone who contributed money to the “funds for food” High Holiday drive which allowed us to donate over $7,000 to Lift Urban Portland and Sunshine Pantry. Thank you to everyone who cooked and served a meal for our neighbors at NW Towers and other housing complexes and programs in the area. Thank you to everyone who knit a hat, scarf, or gloves for someone in need; and the list goes on and on because we are committed to repairing this world.
The rabbis teach, “The reward of a mitzvah is the mitzvah itself” (Pirkei Avot 4:2). Rather than some metaphysical intervention, the great feeling that comes from doing something good is itself the reward. This is the Jewish way: feeling good about doing right and giving thanks is an important reminder that we are on the right track. We at CBI are on the right track, and our work isn’t done. Join us for our next Social Action Committee meeting at 7:00 PM on June 3rd to get involved. When we actively cultivate gratitude, we become happier individuals better equipped to change the world and live inspired lives committed to doing good. Thank you.
And a special thank you to the Mitzvah Day Committee: Rebecca Friedenwald-Fishman, co-chair of Social Action and chair of Mitzvah Day Janet Morgan

Abigail Erin McFeeters-Krone Abby McFeeters-Krone will become Bat Mitzvah on June 6, 2015. She is the daughter of Amy and David McFeeters-Krone and has three siblings: older brother Guy, younger brother Grant, and younger sister Rachel. Abby attends da Vinci Arts Middle School in NE Portland and has decided to work with the Ronald McDonald House organization for her Mitzvah Project. The Ronald McDonald House is a “home-away-fromhome” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost. Abby loves to cook, so she wanted to incorporate cooking into her Mitzvah Project. With the help of her family, she will plan menus, procure food, and prepare several meals for the Portland Ronald McDonald East House near Randall Children’s Hospital. To learn more, visit http://rmhcoregon.org.
Aaron Miles Freedman Aaron Freedman will become Bar Mitzvah on June 13, 2015. He is the son of Joel and Sara Freedman and older brother of Nathaniel. His CBI grandparents are Herman and Vicki Zimmerman. Aaron attends Beaumont Middle School, located near the family’s home in the historic Hollywood neighborhood. For his Mitzvah Project, Aaron is organizing a neighborhood cleanup to support the environmental health and beauty of the city. He is excited to be building neighborhood pride and community ties with other volunteers in this beautification effort.
Jacob Alexander Romer Jake Romer will become Bar Mitzvah on June 20, 2015. He is the son of Brian and Robin Romer and older brother of Lily. Jake is a 7th grader at Creative Science School and has been learning and practicing parkour and freerunning since his 5th grade teacher at CBI turned him on to the sport.
Jake now also has a strong interest in technology and has spent the past year exploring different ways that new technologies such as 3D printing can be used from medical use to food to construction. For his Mitzvah Project, Jake is supporting Operation Daniel, which 3D prints arms for children who have lost limbs in war-torn Sudan. The project is named after Daniel Omar, a 12-year-old boy in Sudan who lost both his arms in a bombing and received prosthetics at age 14. Operation Daniel is just one project of Not Impossible Labs, a nonprofit organization that helps people across the world who have special disabilities, such as lost limbs or rare chronic diseases. They collaborate with a community of creative makers and hackers, and use “crowd-sourcing to crowd-solve previously insurmountable healthcare issues.”It costs only $100 for each arm. To donate, go to www.notimpossible.com and click THE FOUNDATION link. For more information, contact Jake at jake@romergroup.com.
Abigail Quinn Halperin Abby Halperin will become Bat Mitzvah on June 27, 2015. She is the daughter of Blair and Darlene Halperin and younger sister of Brendan and Samantha. Abby is a student at West Sylvan Middle School in SW Portland. In her own words, she explains her Mitzvah Project: “My Bat Mitzvah project was to raise money and awareness for an independent organization called Hope Scarves. The program makes head wraps for women that have gone through chemotherapy and have lost all their hair. My godfather’s sister-in-law, Lara MacGregor, founded Hope Scarves after she was diagnosed with cancer for the first time. Recently, Lara was told the cancer has returned, is stage IV and terminal. I have supported Hope Scarves by raising $270 by selling daffodils through Hope by the Bunches. The daffodil is the universal sign of hope. I strongly support all cancer organizations that raise hope and awareness to cancer patients. I lost 3 out of 4 grandparents to cancer, and many others lose their loved ones to this fatal disease every day. In 2015 an estimated 1.7 million people will be diagnosed with cancer in America, and one out of three will die. It is an honor for me to help this cause.”

Our Leadership Gratitude (n.): the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness
With the 157th Annual Meeting, we said thank you and “yasher koach” to our departing trustees. We also say thank you to their families for sharing them with us: the many meetings, both day and evening, and the phone calls, as well as their generous support for CBI.
By Sydney A. Baer, Executive Director
• Thank you to Stuart Chestler (the seventh of eight presidents I’ve served with in my 15 years) for your leadership, friendship, and partnership during your seven years on the board. We are all the beneficiaries of your many hours and thoughtful leadership on the dues, budget, investment, nominating, leadership, development, and policy review committees. What do you have planned with all your newfound spare time?
It is with pleasure that we share that our President Ned Duhnkrack has just returned from attending the URJ’s Presidents of Large Congregations Conference, the Scheidt Seminar, in Atlanta. It is an extraordinary opportunity for Presidents of Reform Congregations to come together to learn best practices, what is going on in the URJ, and what resources are available for our congregations. It is also a chance to network with our leaders in the URJ and CCAR, as well as her colleagues. She found the 4-day seminar informative and inspiring and said the camaraderie was amazing. She took advantage of every hour she was on the ground in Atlanta, meeting with everyone and continuing to consult on a shared ride to the airport. She appreciated the connections she learned she had when she got there, just by saying she was from CBI – Portland! She also made new connections with the URJ staff/experts, as well as other presidents, which she called “a priceless experience”! Everyone was there to make sure all congregations succeed and have the resources they need. Ned is “jazzed” and ready to take us all to the biennial, so we too can experience the excitement, inspiration, and bonding that goes on when you are with members of URJ congregations from around North America and beyond. While we are a bit isolated in Oregon and not as connected as we could be in the Pacific NW, the network of resources is out there and is integral to the work we all are doing.
• Thank you to Eric Friedenwald-Fishman for your six years as one of our most passionate champions for development and engagement at CBI. Eric created our Every Family Initiative campaign, as well as our tagline, “CBI belongs to everyone.” Many times Eric has been the “pitch” person at our annual fundraisers, again inspiring many to reach a little deeper into their pockets for CBI, and this year Eric/Jake worked with Rabbi and Cantor Cahana to produce and direct our over-the-top and absolutely brilliant Purim schpiel, “The Jews Brothers.” • We are also appreciative of Marney Pike’s service on the board these past two years: supporting our membership, development, and annual fundraising committees, as well as sharing her institutional history that comes from being a dedicated member of our CBI community for over 43 years. At the 157th Annual Meeting in May, we elected and welcomed Steve Gradow, Glen Levy, and Tony Urdes to our CBI Board of Trustees. Please see their photos and stories on page 5. Thank you for sharing this generous gift of your time and expertise with all of us. May we continue to go from strength to strength.
We say thank you and express our gratitude to Ned for attending and deepening our connections. Your participation is an incredible and very generous gift for our congregation and community.
Thank you to Joy Alkalay We are touched and inspired by the incredibly generous $500,000 endowment bequeathed to the CBI Cemetery Beautification Fund by our beloved and longtime employee Joy Alkalay (z”l). This is an extraordinary gift that enables us to continue to make improvements to our cemetery and guarantees that the generations to come will have the same opportunity. Joy was a devoted member of the CBI staff family for 36 years, serving as Bookkeeper, Secretary, and Administrator. Upon retirement, she continued to be a most valuable source of institutional knowledge. She passed away in January 2014 at the age of 90. Joy took great pride in the fact that she took a chance on a newcomer to Portland in 1970. This young man was long on hair and short on experience! And the rest is history, as Pierce Ethier rose to be our beloved Facilities Manger and member of the CBI family for 42 years. Now, we all look to him for his institutional knowledge about everything you could ever want to know about our historic campus.
The next time you are at the cemetery, we hope you will notice the new garden in front of Mausoleum IV, designed by CBI member and horticulturalist Dan Heims and lovingly planted by our Mitzvah Day volunteers. Last year, our Mitzvah Day volunteers planted the beautiful flowers in front of Mausoleums I, II, and II. All of these plants were purchased with Cemetery Beautification funds.

Developing CBI Everyone Should Have a Legacy by Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director As adults, it is inevitable that we think about our demise – will my life have mattered to anyone, will anyone miss me when I am gone, will anyone remember me, will anyone really know what mattered to me? The concept of legacy giving addresses these questions head on. With a legacy gift to Congregation Beth Israel, you are ensured that your name will live on in perpetuity and that the generations to come will know that supporting and sustaining this very organization which has served you and the Portland Jewish community for 157 years mattered to you. You may share your stories with your kids or grandkids, but after a time, those stories are forgotten. In fact, if
asked to name all of your great-great-grandparents, could you? Do you know what was important to them? CBI is proud to list the 120 members who currently comprise our Legacy Circle. This list is composed of donors who have passed on as well as those who have chosen to let us know during their lifetime that whether through an endowment, a will, a trust, or an estate plan, CBI has been named as a beneficiary of their life’s work. Every donor on this list may have been motivated by a different reason. Whatever those reasons are, just as we benefit from those who came before us and saw the current and future value of our congregation, we too have this opportunity to ensure that CBI is here for generations to come. I hope you will choose to join me and the many others listed below as a member of CBI’s Legacy Circle. We would truly be honored to be able to include your name in this esteemed and appreciated group. I look forward to having the opportunity to discuss how you can create your Jewish legacy. Please contact me at (503) 222-1069 or jen@bethisrael-pdx.org.

We gratefully appreciate and proudly recognize those donors who in Fiscal Year 2015 (July 1, 2014-June 30, 2015) helped support our annual fundraising efforts and enabled the Development Department to surpass our $200,000 goal. Whether as a contributor to our Every Family Initiative (EFI), a sponsor of one of our (fun)draising events, a donor to our Mitzvah Moment or Recipe for Success appeals, or a member who makes an additional gift above your annual contribution, we will be listing each and every one of you in our July/August Bulletin. Please know we also welcome your support through your employer’s matching gift program. Our CBI team is always ready to assist you and be sure securing CBI’s present and future is the most positive experience possible. Our Leadership
Welcome, New Board Members The 2015-16 Board of Trustees was elected at the 157th Annual Meeting on May 8th. We welcome our newest board members: Tony Urdes My wife, Bianca, and I are thrilled to be part of such a vibrant, forward-looking, and generous Jewish community. I was born in Romania, where I practiced medicine as a family physician. I have been a proud Oregonian since 1989. Bianca and I are the co-founders of Urdes Miller Wealth Management Group at UBS Financial Services and have spent the last 18 years building our practice. We care for the longterm financial well-being of our clients through careful financial planning and investment portfolio construction. We have always looked for a community built around acceptance, kindness, and understanding; a community that fosters meaningful relationships and encourages a mitzvah every day; a community where multiple generations enjoy being together and celebrate Jewish life. We have found CBI to be all these and more. Under the Dome, our lives are filled with joy, inspiration, and love for our tradition. We strive to ensure that our deeds elevate and sanctify our CBI community in meaningful ways. Glen Levy Lisa and I moved with our two daughters to Portland from New York City in 2011. As newcomers to the city, CBI has been wonderful for our family. My youngest daughter attended Beth Israel Preschool, where we were welcomed into a community of families with young children. I own and operate a small portfolio of real estate in New York, New Orleans, and Portland. My most current project is my first commercial property: a micro-retail development that
is a partnership with Guerrilla Development. “The Zipper,” on NE Sandy Boulevard and 27th Street, is scheduled to open this summer. Tenants will be a range of food-cart-turnedrestaurant type businesses sharing communal seating. Given my background in the food business (specifically bread bakeries), I am eager to help meet the demand for centrally-located smaller retail spaces while also playing a supporting role in Portland’s burgeoning food business environment. I received a BA from Tufts University in Medford, MA which I am still figuring out what to do with. I love the entrepreneurial spirit of Portland and intend to divine as much inspiration from it as possible. I am honored to be nominated and look forward to serving on CBI’s Board of Trustees. Steve Gradow I moved to Portland 12 years ago from Baltimore, MD with my wife, Michelle, and my daughter, Mallory. In 2004, I founded my investment advisory firm serving individual and foundation clients, after spending 20 years as an investment manager for CALPERS, the Washington State Investment board and Allied Investment advisors in Baltimore. I received degrees from UCLA and New York University and currently serve as a trustee for OJCF. I was also a past trustee for Cedar Sinai Park, JFCS, and the Lake Oswego School foundation. Outside of my volunteer work, I participate in tournament golf and spend considerable time at my daughter’s volleyball tournaments, along with following the UCLA Bruins. See back cover for full list of our 2015-16 Board of Trustees.
Resolving Our CBI Parking Conundrum In 1928, when our forefathers chose our beautiful campus, they could never have anticipated our growth or parking needs. They built a magnificent carriage entrance, but the times they are a-changing! When new members join our community, we are often asked, “And where do we park?” We all wish we had an easy answer. Many have heard Sydney Baer say that she wishes we could turn our corner lot into a New York-style pigeon hole parking garage (see above). We don’t have more land or more parking spaces, and unfortunately, parking has now become even tighter with the implementation of the City of Portland’s new parking plan for the NW neighborhood. There are new time limits, and many streets are being metered in close proximity to CBI. In order to preserve
our limited parking for our congregants and guests, we have been randomly putting yellow notices on cars parked in our lot on NW 19th and Flanders to discourage use by non-CBI participants. If you are the recipient of one of these notifications, please just let us know that it is your car and that you are parking while attending CBI services, preschool, religious school, and CBI programs. With our limited parking, we request that you only use the CBI lot while attending and/or participating in CBI events. As you can appreciate, we do not have enough parking for all of our members to use our lot while in the neighborhood on other business. We are hopeful that these yellow notices will discourage nonmembers and non-guests from using our parking lot. We are doing our best to let everyone know that our lot is being monitored and violators will be towed at their expense. Thank you for your help with our parking challenges and for making sure our parking is available for our members and guests.

Very Thoughtful People Legacy Gift Provides Restoration of Stained Glass Windows This year has been a blessing, as CBI has been the beneficiary of many generous legacy gifts. We are thrilled to share that, with a generous bequest from Ronald E. Tonkin, another set of stained glass windows in our historic sanctuary has been exquisitely restored by internationallyrenowned, local stained glass artisan David Schlicker. The next time you enter the sanctuary, look up and to your right; they are the windows Ron Tonkin closest to the bima. They represent creation (with grass and fruit), Yom Kippur (with basin and laver, altar and burnt offerings, scapegoat, scales of justice, and censer and incense, all relating to the theme of atonement and forgiveness), Joseph (with ears of corn symbolic of his talent as an interpreter of dreams and his relationship to Pharaoh), Tribes (with ship in harbor relating to Zevulun and a ram caught in a thicket and brazen laver relating to Issachar). These windows are part of our “wow” factor, and this restoration brings them back to their original beauty. Thank you to Marcy, Brad, Ed, and Barry Tonkin for directing this gift towards this restoration project. We are all the beneficiaries of this generous gift. May Ron’s memory be for a blessing, and may you find comfort from this beautiful memorial.

Congregation Beth Israel is proud to present...
The best new Jewish summer day camp in Portland! We are excited to be offering two sessions this summer. Session 1, August 10-14, is reserved for campers entering 8th or 9th grade. During this session, campers will build friendships, go on adventures throughout Portland, and develop leadership skills through our Madrichim-In-Training (MIT) program. This exciting new program will take campers all over, from rock climbing to local amusement parks! This will lead to their eventual role as MITs for the younger campers in Session 2! Session 2 will take place from August 17-21. Campers entering kindergarten through 5th grade are eligible. During this week, campers will play games, create art projects, and enjoy some fun in the sun! Campers will also go on field trips to places such the Oregon Zoo, swimming, hiking, and much more. Join us and be a part of the magic as we embark on this first summer of fun!
Registration is open to members at a discounted rate as well as non-members! Registration forms, fees, and more are available on Camp Sababa’s webpage at www.bethisrael-pdx.org/ education/camp-sababa. Session 1: August 10-21, Monday-Friday *8th and 9th graders (9:00 AM-4:00 PM) Session 2: August 17-21, Monday-Friday *Kindergarten - 5th graders (9:00 AM-3:00 PM) *8th and 9th graders (9:00 AM-4:00 PM) Please contact Ziva Sholin (ziva@bethisrael-pdx.org) or Shoshanna Pro (shoshanna@bethisrael-pdx.org) for more information!
