B’nei Mitzvah Ruby Mae Zapf-Geller Ruby Zapf-Geller will become Bat Mitzvah on March 14, 2015. She is the daughter of Roger Geller and Holly Zapf and the younger sister of Max. Ruby attends Da Vinci Arts Middle School in SE Portland. She has crafted a very personal Mitzvah Project, centering on feeding the homeless and hungry in our community. She explains how this began and has grown: “I’ve had a lot of experience with people who aren’t able to provide for their basic needs, from helping out at synagogue functions, riding the bus, and just talking to people as I walk around downtown with my dad. Unfortunately, my friends don’t know quite as much about homelessness and food insecurity. So, to raise awareness, I decided to involve my friends in this project. Every Sunday I recruit about 3-5 of my friends. We make and package the meals, which consist of lentil soup, a PB and J sandwich, an apple and a chocolate chip cookie, all of which is homemade. We put 50 meals into my dad’s bike trailer and walk down near the waterfront, where there are lots of bridges that can provide shelter, and also homeless centers, where lots of people in need of a meal are. Often before it’s dark, we run out of meals, and there are always more hungry people. We’re honestly just making a small dent in a big problem. I’ve spoken to one person, who told me that if we hadn’t come by and provided a meal, they would have only had a box of cereal that entire day. And all of you know, or at least can guess, that that’s far from a substantial meal.” All of the expenses for Ruby’s project are out-of-pocket. Arthur Joseph Feidelson Arthur Feidelson will become Bar Mitzvah on March 30, 2015. He is the son of Lee and Robin Feidelson and older brother of Nelson. Arthur is a 7th grader at Mt. Tabor Middle School and has chosen to work with Central City Concern (CCC) for his ongoing Mitzvah Project. CCC is a non-profit agency serving single adults and families in the Portland Metro area who are impacted by homelessness, poverty, and addictions. Created as the Burnside Consortium by the City of Portland and Multnomah County in 1979, the CCC’s initial work involved alcohol recovery treatment as well as affordable housing management and rehabilitation. Arthur is creating a website to outline his plan to raise homelessness awareness in Portland and ways to help serve the needs of the population. Lisa, a nurse by training and health care consultant at Medical Resource Network, grew up in many parts of the United States, and Frederick, a no-longer-practicing accountant, works as a system analyst at FEI Company and grew up in Stamford, Connecticut. They have lived in Portland for more than thirty years, have older children who have left home, and enjoy vacationing in Provence, France, where they have part ownership in a rental home. by Rabbi Rachel L. Joseph Assistant Rabbi Social justice is at the core of Reform Judaism. As Rabbi Marla Feldman teaches, “To be a Reform Jew is to hear the voice of the prophets in our head; to be engaged in the ongoing work of tikkun olam; to strive to improve the world in which we live; to be God’s partners in standing up for the voiceless and fixing what is broken in our society.” We are painfully aware that injustice exists in the world and within blocks of our synagogue, people go hungry. As Jews, we cannot be bystanders. For the past two years we have engaged in focused handson work to help those in the community. We have literally served thousands of meals to people living on the margins. In addition to our direct service work, we are adding an important focus to our work: the Social Action Committee has agreed that our goal is to move beyond “band-aid” solutions into advocacy. As important as it is to serve food on the streets of Portland, we also plan to address and explore the root causes of these problems and formulate strategies for effective advocacy and social change in city, state, and federal government. Our work has already begun: On February 11, we joined the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon for Interfaith Advocacy Day in Salem. We were trained in advocacy skills; participated in issue briefings on confronting poverty, promoting economic justice, and gun violence

Now through Wednesday, March 4 CBI is proud to be a part of the Community Warehouse family. Each year at Purim we ask our members to look through their kitchens and donate items that families can use in their apartments. These are victims of domestic violence, the disabled, veterans, and low income families. This year we are looking to supply cooking equipment - pots, pans, toasters, electric skillets, blenders, mixers, and everything a family needs to cook a meal and share that time with each other. We are asking each religious school student to bring in one kitchen utensil like a spoon, can opener, vegetable peeler, etc. Donation bins are available in all three CBI buildings. In the Jewish tradition, learning is about living. The values taught in our texts provide the basis for our long history of commitment to social justice. The Talmud tells the story of a debate between two major rabbinic academies, the school of Hillel and the school of Shammai. They struggled to resolve the following question: If a person had to choose between studying Torah and performing good deeds, what should he or she do? After years of argument, they concluded that if a person could only choose one thing, they should study Torah. Their logic was as follows: If you only performed good deeds, you would be a good person, but you might never understand the richness and complexity of our tradition. On the other hand, everyone agreed that it was impossible to study Torah and not be motivated to perform good deeds and pursue justice. The rabbis found it inconceivable that study would not lead to action. Through our advocacy work on the Social Action Committee, we hope to expand the breadth and depth of activism and Jewish learning at CBI. Sunday, March 15 The Jewish Federation is sponsoring the annual Good Deeds Day by coordinating many projects throughout Portland that will improve the lives of others and even help change the world. Available projects include blanket-making, home-building, gardening, and social & senior services. For Good Deeds Day, CBI is hosting our neighbors from NW Tower & Annex, a low-income community, for lunch. In addition to preparing and serving a delicious and nutritious lunch, we will be joining our neighbors for the meal. Please come to help but also to meet and socialize with our neighbors between 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM. Developing CBI Taste of Temple scores again by Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director The crowd of over 500 people who gathered at Castaway on February 8th confirmed once again that good food, good fun, and good people make a delicious combination. To put together an event of this proportion requires a huge commitment on the part of many. Tony and Bianca Urdes embraced that challenge the minute they said yes to being the chairs of Taste of Temple IV. From its first inception, TOT has always been a friendraiser and FUNdraiser with four goals: being affordable for the majority of our members, providing an entry point for people 21 and over to get engaged and involved with CBI, appealing to multiple generations, and supporting local businesses that would in turn support our mission of providing for our local community. After mixing these ingredients together, the final objective is to raise money towards our $200,000 funding gap so we can be sure to keep creating Jewish memories and impacting Jewish lives.
Proudly (and for the fourth time, might we add), we can boast: Mission Accomplished! We extend continued thanks to our generous sponsors and the gracious restaurants, wineries, distilleries, and breweries whom we hope you will continue to support, letting them know how appreciative you are of their working with us to build a responsible and caring community. (We proudly continue to list them on our website.) We are always appreciative of the wonderful volunteers who make these events come alive, as well as our support and professional staff, who join together to bring TOT to life. It is thanks to all of you that this event continues to feed us in so many ways. D’or Hadash is our youth group for 6th-8th grade members and is also a part of NFTY’s new initiative for JYGs (junior youth groups). Monthly events allow them to share fun and educational activities with their Jewish peers outside the classroom.

EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMMING The CBI Preschool hosts monthly Tot Shabbats and Sunday morning programs for children up to age 5 and their families – whether or not they are enrolled in our preschool. Each event focuses on an aspect of Jewish life, such as an upcoming holiday or Shabbat, and includes songs, activities, crafts, stories, and more.

Join us for a “shower” to restock the Blumauer Kitchen, the most vital space that we all use!
Needed: PHFS Shelter Volunteers Most of us don’t worry about having a safe place to sleep and being able to provide satisfying, healthy meals for our children. Unfortunately, that is not the case for some Portland families. There are many who need the services provided by PHFS (Portland Homeless Family Solutions), formerly known as Goose Hollow Family Shelter, a winter family emergency shelter located at First United Methodist Church. You can help by joining the group of Congregation Beth Israel members, their families, and friends who volunteer at the shelter. Three to four people form a team, pick one night each month from November through April (for example, the second Tuesday of each month), and coordinate with their team members to cook a nutritious meal at home and bring it to the shelter. Children, parents, volunteers, and staff join each other for the meal. We can also use volunteers to fill in on an occasional basis when one of the regular volunteers is unable to do so. “Justice, Justice Shall You Pursue”: Reflections on Jews and the American Union Movement Tuesday, March 17, 7:00 PM Pollin Chapel Speaker: Prof. Bob Bussel From its inception, Jews have played a major role in the development of the American union movement. This talk by Dr. Bob Bussel, a historian, former union organizer, and director of the Labor Education and Research Center at the University of Oregon, will explore the evolution of Jewish involvement in the union movement and trace how this involvement has changed over time. Dr. Bussel will also review the contributions Jews have made in improving the lives of workers and assess what future role Jews might play in the union movement’s revitalization.
