2013 Oseran Family Lecture:

have taken stands on socially responsible issues relevant to Reform Judaism. As many in our congregation can attest, our clergy have never shied away from advocating for social justice, no matter their level of provocation.

E. J. DIONNE, JR.

Sunday, May 5, 5:00 PM Main Sanctuary CBI is pleased to welcome E. J. Dionne, Jr. as the 2013 Oseran Family Lecturer. E. J. Dionne will be speaking about personal faith and public policy. The Oserans chose Mr. Dionne after reading his book Souled Out: Reclaiming Faith & Politics After the Religious Right, about the intersection of religion and political life. This has been a challenging and often-debated issue beginning with our Founding Fathers, as they too wrestled with the importance of the separation of church and state. Mr. Dionne is a long-time op-ed columnist for The Washington Post, writing twice a week on national politics and public policy. He is a professor at Georgetown University and a senior fellow at The Bookings Institute. Mr. Dionne is a frequent commentator on NPR, ABC’s “This Week,” and NBC’s “Meet the Press.” In speaking with Nancy Oseran, E. J. Dionne will provide the opportunity to bring our congregation and community together to learn and discuss relevant, Jewish, and socially responsible topics. Nancy, Henry, and their family have always taken great pride in the fact that our clergy have always had the freedom of the pulpit, and they

The Oseran Family Fund was established in 2008 to provide annual lectures with a socially responsible Jewish theme. Past lecturers have included U. S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon, and author and national correspondent Jeffrey Goldberg. The Oserans are longtime members of our congregation. Nancy began religious school at CBI when she was 5, making her, her children, and her grandchildren another of our fourgeneration families. We are most grateful to the Oseran family for gifting Photo courtesy of Images by Floom our congregation and community with these generous and thought-provoking lectures. They are passionate about social justice, honoring our past, and perpetuating CBI and Reform Judaism for future generations. This lecture is free and open to the community. We hope that you will invite your family and friends to join us for this enlightening opportunity.

155th Annual Meeting

Restoration Project

The Clergy, Officers, and Board of Trustees of Congregation Beth Israel cordially invite you to attend the 155th Annual Meeting Friday, May 17, 2013, 6:00 PM Goodman Hall, Schnitzer Family Center Light refreshments will be served We are only a few weeks and 155 years from the original date when a group of Israelites gathered in response to a call to a meeting. Then and there, they resolved to organize a congregation for the worship of the One and Only Everlasting God, according to the ancient ritual of the Jewish faith. It was resolved to call a second meeting for the purpose of adopting a constitution and electing officers. By the 13th of June, permanent by-laws and the name “Beth Israel” were adopted.* There are several conflicting start dates, but many references state May 20, 1858. As they did in 1914, we will elect new board members, have a few short speeches, and listen to a performance by our Kol Echad Choir, under the direction of Cantor Cahana. We will announce our Rabbi Rose Tikkun Olam winner, recognizing a very dedicated volunteer, committed to making the world a better place. Also, we will be honoring our retiring trustees: Susan Graber, Miles Newmark, Warren Rosenfeld, Jill Semler Rubinstein, Dick Solomon, and Jeff Wolfstone. The congregation will have the opportunity to elect the following nominees to the Board of Trustees for a two-year term, 2013-2015. The Nominating Committee (co-chaired by Debbie Caldwell and Jill

S. Rubinstein with the following committee members: Robyn Barbon, Lester Baskin, Sarah Epstein, Judah Garfinkle, Renee Holzman, Scott Schaffer, and Brad Tonkin) has recommended the following slate: • For election to a new two-year term on the Board of Trustees 2013-2015: Jonathan Barg, Sharon Meieran, Joanne Van Ness Menashe, Mark Peterman, Marney Pike, and Jane Vereschagin. • F or re-election to a two-year term on the Board of Trustees 2013-2015: Ilene Davidson, Nancy E. Duhnkrack, John Epstein, Eric Friedenwald-Fishman, and Brad Tonkin. • T o continue serving on the Board of Trustees whose terms are not expired: Debbie Caldwell, Stuart Chestler, Elizabeth Domagalski, Ali Garfinkle, Linda Georges, Ted Nelson, Ron Silver, and Arthur Steinhorn. Join us in celebration, song, and good wishes as we honor our past 155 years as a kehilah kedosha, sacred community, and continue to build for our future. Stained Glass Window Restoration Project - Phase 1 With great appreciation to Jack Menashe, current chair of the Building and Grounds Committee, historic architectural consultant and congregant Henry Kunowski, Mark New, former chair of the B & G Committee, Brad Tonkin, board liaison, and a very dedicated committee, we have been working on a campus-wide capital improvements and long-term maintenance inventory for the past several years. They have identified and presented a list of the many deferred maintenance projects to the board. With the board’s approval, we will begin our first restoration project this month – the restoration and repair of three of our eighteen magnificent stained glass windows in the main sanctuary. These are the middle three long windows on the south wall, facing Flanders Street. They depict Rosh Hashanah, the Tribes of Levi and Judah, and the Patriarch Jacob. This middle window is designated as the “Fellowship Window,” being gifted to CBI by Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and St. Mary’s Cathedral upon moving to the northwest neighborhood. This expression of friendship and welcome is symbolized by the clasped hands in the lower portion of the panel. It is the goal of the B & G Committee to complete the other two sets of long windows on the south side over the next two years. These are the windows which sustain the most weather and are in urgent need of restoration. The north side, the windows facing Glisan Street, do not require repair at this time.

David Schlicker Stained Glass Studio will be restoring our windows. David Schlicker is a noted stained glass artisan, with over 30 years of experience in stained glass restoration and repair. David is an adjunct professor of historic stained glass preservation at the University of Oregon and a member of the Stained Glass Association of America. This will be about a three month process. The scaffolding will go up on May 20, and the windows will be carefully removed and transported to his studio. While the repair takes place, artistic decals replicating stained glass will be in place. This is done for both the aesthetics and disbursement of the light coming through the windows. Mr. Schlicker promises to have phase one of the stained glass window project completed by the end of August, so that our newly restored windows will be in place before Rosh Hashanah.

Window # 1, Given in loving memory of Sigmund and Clara Heilner Window # 2, Given to us by Trinity and St Mary’s Cathedral Window # 3, Given in Memory of Harold Aaron Meier This Group was also named for the generous donation from the Schnitzer Family at the time of the Schnitzer Family Center’s dedication

May 2013

Funds for this restoration will come from our building fund. We are fortunate to have had these funds in place so we can act quickly to ensure the stability of our beautiful temple. These improvements are made possible by Harold and Arlene Schnitzer’s previous $100,000 donation to our restoration fund, the incredibly generous bequest from Jack Neustadter, and you, our membership, for contributing to the building fund upon joining our community. We recognize and thank all of you for being a part of our caring community and certainly welcome support from everyone – as CBI belongs to all of us.

Havdalah and a Movie: “Footnote; or He’arat Shulayim” (2011, in Hebrew with English subtitles) Saturday, May 11, 7:00 PM Miller Room This is the story of a great rivalry between a father and son, both eccentric professors in the Talmud department of Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The son has an addictive dependency on the accolades that the establishment provides, while his father is a stubborn purist with a fear and profound revulsion for what the establishment stands for, yet beneath his contempt lies a desperate thirst for some kind of recognition. The Israel Prize, Israel’s most prestigious national award, is the jewel that brings these two to a final, bitter confrontation.

by Stuart Chestler President, CBI Board of Trustees Dear fellow members of Congregation Beth Israel, It’s that time again. This May, we are holding our 155th CBI Annual Meeting of the Congregation. I realize that not everyone gets excited about the prospect of attending this yearly event. Rumor has it that some folks view attendance at this meeting as a task akin to housekeeping, possibly as exciting as sweeping the floor and vacuuming the carpet. But rather than thinking of the Annual Meeting as a chore required to keep our spiritual home functioning smoothly, this year I urge you to change that paradigm. Let’s think of it rather as a chance to remodel our home, versus just giving it a tedious scrub. You get to put your stamp of approval on the attractive new facelift of your Board of Trustees! Here’s why: for months, our Nominating Committee (co-chaired by Debbie Caldwell and Jill Rubinstein, with the following members: Robyn Barbon, Lester Baskin, Sarah Epstein, Judah Garfinkle, Renee Holzman, Scott Schaffer and Brad Tonkin) has been brainstorming, discussing with fellow members, and making recommendations of six new members for election to 2-year terms on the Board of Trustees. I want to personally recognize and thank all of the above for their time and dedication to ensuring a vibrant future for our synagogue. They have all been like master interior designers, working together to craft the perfect blend of creativity and functionality of leadership for Temple Beth Israel. As a result, we have the following up for election to a new 2-year term on the Board of Trustees: Jonathan Barg, Sharon Meieran, Joanne Van Ness Menashe, Mark Peterman, Marney Pike, and Jane Vereschagin. In addition, for re-election to a 2-year term on the Board of Trustees, we present Ilene Davidson, Nancy Duhnkrack, John Epstein, Eric Friedenwald-Fishman, and Brad Tonkin. I want to thank these folks for their current contributions on the Board and especially for the fact that they are all willing to continue volunteering huge amounts of time and energy for the betterment of CBI. Those whose terms have not expired and will continue serving are: Debbie Caldwell, Elizabeth Domagalski, Ali Garfinkle, Linda Georges, Ted Nelson, Ron Silver, Arthur Steinhorn, and myself. I urge every CBI member to attend our 155th Annual Meeting on Friday, May 17 and stay for Shabbat services immediately following. Think of it not as house work, but home building, of which you are a critical designer, because this is YOUR synagogue. And speaking of builders, please join me in thanking Warren Rosenfeld for his service and the five Board members who are completing six years of service on the CBI Board and are not up for re-election: Jill Rubenstein, Susan Graber, Miles Newmark, Dick Solomon, and Jeff Wolfstone. Each in his or her own way has made CBI sparkle. Shalom, Stuart Chestler

Where Are You? By Ida Rae Cahana Senior Cantor If you have found yourself using the expression “stressed out” to explain your state of mind or the reason for recurring lateness or sudden outbursts of irritability, join the club! No matter where you are in your life – a young parent, a widower, a recent retiree, a bereaved daughter, a transplant to a new city – there are times of heart-thumping, shoulder-tensing, headachy agitation! How can we, Jews of the 21st century, find more peace and appreciation in our daily lives? In a famous Bible story, our patriarch Abraham allowed himself to get worked up to a fever pitch, almost to the point of committing a heinous act which would have shattered him and altered the course of our history. However, he was able to stop himself and with focused attention and calm say, “Hineini” – “Here I am.” It was a remarkable moment of spiritual awakening. Jewish meditation is a practice which can move you towards a time when you can also pause, stop the frenetic pace, and say, “Hineini.” This year, CBI member Lawrence Baker and I have been leading meditation once or twice a month. Additionally, every couple of months, I have conducted healing services with the musical assistance of our members. All of these hours of reflection, chant, and guided meditation have significantly contributed to the spiritual life of our community. There are misconceptions about Jewish meditation, because we tend to equate meditation with a trancelike state, a blissful isolation from the world and its cares. Jewish meditation has the ability to be transformative, bringing a person to a state of joy and inner freedom. But because Judaism does not derive from a monastic tradition, we insist on participation in the world. Jews know that interacting with the world is a component of experiencing the Divine. We pray with a minyan, a quorum of ten. In the company of friends

and neighbors and family, we read and sing and also find silence. Praying is not always fulfilling or easy; sometimes the words trip us up or our worries of the week interfere. That’s why the Hebrew word for prayer is “avodah,” which means “work.” As with anything worthwhile, prayer and meditation take practice. Early this June, there will be a unique opportunity to work at it together, incorporating meditative techniques into our services for a very special weekend. I invite you to join us on June 7th and 8th with a gifted teacher and practitioner of meditation, Rabbi Margie Jacobs, who will co-lead Friday evening and Saturday morning services. Then stay with us for a Kiddush luncheon and meditative experience. Rabbi Jacobs served as Regional Director of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, Rabbi of Temple Beth Hillel in Richmond, CA, and Rabbi-Educator at Congregation Netivot Shalom in Berkeley. She is a teacher of mindfulness meditation and Jewish spirituality, life coach, ritual facilitator, Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutor, and Vice President of the Northern California Board of Rabbis. She lives in Berkeley with her husband and two daughters, ages 3 and 5. Looking forward to seeing you! Yours l’shalom (in peace), Cantor Ida Rae Cahana

Lunch and Meditation Saturday, June 8 Please RSVP for this event to Tracy in the CBI office at (503) 222-1069. The last day to sign up is Friday, May 31. While there is no cost for this event, registration is limited to the first 50 people.

The Allison B. Cohen Madrichim Training and Religious School Scholarship Fund It is bittersweet to share the news of a new tribute fund at CBI, the Allison B. Cohen Madrichim Training and Religious School Scholarship Fund, created by her family in her memory. Allison was a longtime member of our congregation, attended our religious school, and was passionate about our Madrichim program. She passed away in November of 2011, during her senior year of high school. Allison was the beloved madricha for Sally Swire’s blended 4th/5th grade class starting in 2009. The students adored her gentle manner, her colorfully-painted fingernails, and especially her mile-wide smile, which lit up the room. In honor of Allison’s passion for teaching in our religious school and for being a part of our Madrichim team, the name of CBI’s Madrichim program has been formally changed to the Allison B. Cohen Madrichim Training Program. The purpose of this Tribute Fund is to provide funds for training and compensation for CBI students participating in our Madrichim training and teaching program, as well as Religious School scholarships for students actively attending CBI’s Religious School. It is the family’s wish that you will support this fund when making contributions to our congregation to mark a special occasion, express your support, or remember a loved one. Allison was a wonderful student and teacher. She made a difference in the lives of many and is greatly missed by all who knew her.

Honoring Those Who Served Each year at Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day, we pay tribute to those buried at Beth Israel who served our country in the wars by adorning their final resting spot with an American flag. This simple indication of military service honors the sacrifices of our war veterans and enhances the natural beauty of our historic cemetery. For many years, cemetery workers have placed the nearly 200 flags on the ground plots and mausoleum spaces throughout the property. In the past, Mitzvah Day volunteers have assisted with the task. Recently, we have introduced a new procedure aimed to ensure all graves are properly marked. Over the long Memorial Day Weekend, a container of flags will be centrally located adjacent to Landau Chapel. Families coming to visit may take a flag so they can personally place it on the grave in tribute to their loved ones. Should you have any questions about burial locations at the cemetery, please contact Jemi Kostiner Mansfield at (503) 222-1069 or jemi@bethisrael-pdx.org.

Choose to Make a Difference by Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director Thirty-one years ago I moved to Boulder, Colorado, with my husband and newborn son in tow. Howard was to start his career as a professor, and for the first time in my adult life I did not have a job. As someone who likes to be busy and connected, I cultivated friendships with other new moms and started a play group. As our children grew older and the importance of giving my son a Jewish preschool experience increased, I gathered more bravado than I ever knew I had and with just six families started a Jewish preschool, housing the preschool in Congregation Har HaShem, where Rabbi Joshua Rose now serves as Senior Rabbi. I just visited that school (and saw Rabbi Rose there picking up his kids) and kvelled knowing there are now 100 children in the program. While attending Shabbat Sing, someone asked me f I had ever envisioned this, and I said absolutely yes – not because I was cocky but because I truly believed then as I do now that there are many others who want that transformative Jewish experience for their children and themselves. Being back in Boulder floods me with memories of what it felt like to bring together for the first time an exciting group of people who believed anything was possible. Working at CBI continues to give me that thrill. From the smallest idea to the most innovative next great thing, by working together we can impact lives far beyond what one might imagine. It starts with a dream and then is fueled by passion. With that as your mantra, the possibilities are endless. All that really matters is that you choose to make a difference. Now start imagining what we could develop together.

WRJ/BI Sisterhood Song of Miriam Award Honoring Daphna Stadig Sunday, June 2, 10:00 AM - 12:15 PM Mittleman Jewish Community Center

Special Needs Seder On the fourth night of Passover, Beth Israel Sisterhood hosted its annual Special Needs Seder for clients of Jewish Family and Child Services (JFCS). It was a beautiful evening, led by Cantor Cahana. We had 30 guests participate in the storytelling and enjoy a delicious meal catered by Century Catering. Without this lovely event we host for the community each year, our guests might not have any place to attend a seder. Thank you to Loree Sakai and Leslie Berman for planning this evening, and to Debbie Braymer, Linda Fintzy, and JFCS staff for driving, translating, and participating in the seder. It was an emotional, meaningful evening.

Portrait Presentation Friday, May 3

Please join us for the Song of Miriam Awards Brunch, presented by the Jewish Women’s Round Table. WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood is pleased to honor Daphna Stadig as our outstanding volunteer for 2013. She is being recognized for her service to Sisterhood, Congregation Beth Israel, and our community. A Beth Israel Sisterhood (BIS) board member since 2009 and chair of Sisterhood Social Action and Advocacy for the past two years, Daphna has advocated for and supported “lone soldiers” serving in the Israeli Defense Forces; collected supplies for military groups, including soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, either directly or through the USO; and supported the efforts of the CBI Social Action Committee. She has been outspoken in her efforts to advocate for an end to child trafficking and an end to the many strip clubs in Oregon. She also leads the BIS “Bikkur Cholim” program, making wholesome meals for families in need in our congregation.

Please join us on Friday, May 3 at the evening service as we present a beautiful portrait of Cantor Judith Blanc Schiff to our congregation. Sisterhood funded the portrait to show our love and appreciation for Cantor Schiff. Its presentation during the Adult B’nei Mitzvah service is especially appropriate as so many of us have been taught by her.

Daphna taught at Congregation Beth Israel from 1997-2008. She taught Midrasha as well as Bar/Bat Mitzvah classes.
