Israel: A People. A Place. A Promise. Havdalah & A Movie
Saturday, October 13, 7:00 PM Miller Room THE DEBT or HA-HOV (in Hebrew with English subtitles, 2007) This is the original version, made in Israel. It is a chilling, nervous, superbly acted adventure to watch. Set in 1965, it follows 3 young Mossad agents charged with capturing the Nazi “Surgeon of Birkenau” and bringing him to trial in Israel. They track him in his new life and successfully capture him--only to get stranded with no way to smuggle him back to Israel. He gets away and the agents cover up the affair. After decades, the incident comes back to haunt them, and they realize the original mission must be completed. The ensuing action and the ending will surprise and shock you. This film is for adults.
The Invention of Rabbinic Judaism
Sunday, October 21, 10:15 AM Pollin Chapel Speaker: Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana As with so many other cultures in world history, Judaism might have disappeared after the dismantling of its homeland, the destruction of its religious center, and the exile of it people. And yet the Jewish people have thrived, and for nearly 2000 years since have grown and spread throughout the world. How did this miraculous reinvention happen, and what does it tell about the future of our people with the return of our ancient homeland? Please join us at 10:00 AM for a brief informational session about our upcoming Israel trip (April 14-18, 2013.)

Congregation Beth Israel
From Our Leadership Something New and Significant By Ida Rae Cahana Senior Cantor
One of the many qualities I appreciate in my sister-in-law, Rina, is her insistence on looking ahead and making sure there is something to celebrate. “What should we do in October?” she asked me last month, right in the middle of High Holiday preparations. Rina reminds me to make sure to keep an eye on the future and make sure that every month there is something to mark shared time together. I also appreciate that that time usually involves cake… What should we do in October? Two new clergy have been installed; our religious school classrooms are filled with innovative teachers and pleasantly surprised learners; members of our choirs are already getting ready for Chanukah. The year is rolling out before us in a rhythm we know and count on. I would like to count on you to try out or revisit one aspect of this synagogue’s life that is different for you. Our temple prays together but we also learn, build up community and sing together! Music can be an unexpected way in to discover Judaism’s beauty and depth, requiring no prior knowledge. Synagogue songs, prayer chants, and ancient and current voices are all expressed through the diversity of Jewish music. This year, we will present a number of new opportunities to open our doors to the wider community and encourage neighbors and friends, Jews and non-Jews, to attend special gatherings. There will be free 45 minute concerts on two select Thursday evenings, featuring wonderful local musicians. These will be times to come in after work just before dinner, marvel at our sanctuary, and leave inspired and hopefully intrigued. Stay tuned for details!
Installations
By Rachel L. Joseph Assistant Rabbi We began the holidays with the installation of Ida Rae Cahana as Senior Cantor, and we’ll conclude the holidays with another installation. I am so blessed to be a part of this community and look forward to “officially” becoming your assistant rabbi on October 5th. What an honor to have my father, Rabbi Sam Joseph, as my installation speaker. Most importantly, I look forward to celebrating this relationship with you, the Congregation Beth Israel family. Almost a year ago, Congregation Beth Israel’s assistant rabbi position appeared on the rabbinic job website just as I was looking for a job, and I knew I had to have it. In the three months that I’ve been here, there are countless moments that have confirmed why I am so lucky to be your assistant rabbi. When I think of Congregation Beth Israel, I think of the people who have welcomed me with open arms and open hearts; of the courage to throw out old models and try something new and innovative; of the vision to engage every person in our community through music, education and worship. My hope is to work with you to build a world where Judaism is relevant to Jews and Jews are relevant to the world. On Rosh Hashana, I spoke about transformational Judaism. I spoke about practicing in here who we want to be out there. And while this is not a new idea, it is a big idea, so I hope that you will join me in learning the skills, along with the words and actions, that will help us to transform our community. Together, we can transform the world!
Live and Learn
By Stuart Chestler President, CBI Board of Trustees For Reform Jews, lifelong learning is a core value and central tenet of our religious movement. Congregation Beth Israel makes it easy and fun to pursue the mitzvah of on-going study as individuals and as a synagogue community.
This month, I am also preparing for an extraordinary concert to help raise money to give support to our amazing membership and synagogue. Sunday, November 4th is the date to hold so that you don’t miss the opportunity to hear Thomas Lauderdale, China Forbes, Storm Large, members of Pink Martini, the NW Community Gospel Choir, our own Wendy Westerwelle and more - right in our own sanctuary. The evening begins with a reception at 5:30 PM, with the concert to follow at 7:00PM.
If you haven’t yet received your copy in the mail, pick up one of our new CBI Adult Education brochures. It offers nine months of interesting lectures, workshops, classes and even movies. The CBI Adult Education Committee has put together a wide variety of activities and experiences to make our pursuit of lifelong learning together accessible and even affordable— most programs are free or have very minimal fees.
What should we do each month? Something new and significant. Something to restore and re-energize. Something with cake! See you at the oneg. Don’t miss our Special Fundraising Concert Event to Support Congregation Beth Israel
Sunday, November 4, 2012 Tickets available online at www.bethisrael-pdx.org/buy-tickets.
Every year our Adult Education program features a different theme. This year’s theme is “Israel: A People. A Place. A Promise,” and features a congregational trip to Israel (not free but worth the price) led by Rabbi Cahana and Cantor Cahana. This year I invite you to take “live and learn” to a higher level in your life with our many programs at CBI. Make this simple proverb and personal promise to yourself, your family and your Reform Jewish community.

From Our Executive Director And we have only just begun… By Sydney A. Baer Executive Director
It has been an extraordinary fall, and the New Year has only just begun. We began with our historic installation of Cantor Ida Rae Cahana with five clergy on the bima, our past, present and future creating a memorable celebration. High Holy Days were very special this year, as we created new services, new traditions and new ways to open our doors even wider. We welcomed many new friends and family to join our community. We are so appreciative of how we have all come together to make the Holy Days so special for our congregants and community. This is where I worry I will miss someone. Thank you to Kol Echad for sharing your beautiful voices with all of us; Kevin Hoover and Karen Kranz for coordinating all the ushers; Ilene Davidson for coordinating the food drive and Alex Davidson for creating the flyers and helping to get the bags under all the seats; Irving Levin for sharing your inspiring rendition of Kol Nidre; Pierce Ethier and Rachel Blumenkron for coming out of retirement to create the beautiful flower arrangements; all the cookie bakers and the WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood for coordinating the baking for the Rosh Hashanah Reception (we could make the best cookie cookbook with our collection of recipes!) and the break fast; Harold and Jane Pollin and the Sheraton Hotel’s very professional catering for making our reception delicious, beautiful, and memorable; and the mighty men of our Brotherhood for the wonderful Sukkah raising celebration. And I can’t forget our staff. Thank you to Rabbi Cahana, Cantor Cahana, Rabbi Joseph, Ben Sandler, and Beth Hamon for all the new innovations, new traditions, and inspiring services; Ben Sandler, Stacy Friedman, Rabbi Joseph and Rabbi Cahana, our Ba’alei T’kiyah; Jemi Kostiner Mansfield for all her coordination as our new Congregational Affairs Director; Jen Feldman for helping us make so many connections within our community; Michael Barnes, accompanist; our office staff for making all the administrative logistics seamless; and Craig Paton, our new Facilities Manager, and his team for overseeing all the facilities. There are so many logistics and much collaboration; we are truly fortunate to have such a great clergy, staff and volunteer team. It takes a congregation to make our High Holy Days so memorable.

The celebrations continue with the installation of Rabbi Joseph on Friday, October 5th. We hope you will join us for Rabbi Joseph’s Installation and very special Shabbat Dinner, with particular thanks to CBI’s Membership Committee. The Membership Committee, under the leadership of Michelle Gradow and Elizabeth Domagalski, has been hard at work creating ways to build community, connections and increased opportunities for us all to come together. This promises to be a wonderful evening of celebration, and a chance to bring our congregation together again. The Membership Committee is also providing the Onegs on the 1st Fridays of the month between the regular service and the JND service, giving us an opportunity to linger after Shabbat Services and connect with old and new friends. Don’t forget our not-to-be-missed new fundraiser, Ida Rae & Friends, on November 4th. As you can see from the lineup, Ida Rae has some wonderful friends – this promises to be a spectacular evening. We will be raising funds to help support our membership services and new music vision for CBI. We hope you will join us for this extraordinary evening. All the details are on the front cover of the bulletin. Many thanks to Linda Georges and the Development Committee, Jen Feldman and our staff support for this exciting and unique musical extravaganza. We hope that you make 5773 the year to make new connections within our community and participate in all that we have to offer from our Congregational choirs to our monthly Book Group, Adult Education programs, committee work, Social Action projects, Shabbat services, holiday celebrations and more. Thank you for being part of our community and for making us a community. Congregation Beth Israel
Developing CBI Developing CBI
By Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director As the High Holy Days end, the Development Committee turns their focus to our November 4th fundraiser: Ida Rae and Friends. The beautiful holiday melodies join the other tunes always humming in my head. Music is a powerful tool, especially here at CBI. I smile as I think that the halls (and the hills) are alive with the sound of music. The magic’s in the music, and the music’s in me. If you have sat near me at services, you know that I have no musical aptitude, which is rather sad, as my father had a beautiful cantorial voice and often shared his talent with small synagogues throughout the south. I do, however, appreciate music of all kinds, and that is just one of the reasons I am drawn to Congregation Beth Israel. Music is incredibly inspirational. Hearing Jewish melodies helps me recall singing at camp, as well as in my home and at The Temple in Nashville, Tennessee, where I spent my childhood.
Congregation Beth Israel is truly blessed to have our new Senior Cantor continue the musical tradition of CBI. Cantor Cahana embraces each of us through her magnificent talent. It can be truly said that she is a rock star, evidenced by those clamoring to share a stage with her. We are incredibly fortunate to be hosting what is sure to be a stellar evening when Cantor Cahana’s friends Thomas Lauderdale, Storm Large, China Forbes, Wendy Westerwelle, the NW Community Gospel Choir, Mia Hall Savage and the Pacific Youth Choir join her on stage in our Temple, Sunday, November 4th. This fundraising event is sure to rock your soul and your heart. The sound in the Sanctuary has drastically improved, thanks to the generous gift from Rita and Bob Philip. In addition to vastly enhancing our sound quality and clarity, we have installed a hearing aid loop technology that allows you to turn on the T-coil program on your hearing aid for seamless integration into the new sound system. The difference was noticeable when Cantor Cahana sang her first note at her Selichot installation and carried through during the holidays. Our celebrations are just beginning, and the music will continue to rock our souls. Please join us as often as you can to pray, to learn and to listen. Make it a priority to join us on November 4th as we prove fundraising really can be fun!

Convention Mitzvah Project
The Torah: A Women’s Commentary gives dimension to the women’s voices in our tradition. Under Editor Dr. Tamara Cohn Eskenazi’s skillful leadership, this commentary provides insight and inspiration for all who study Torah: men and women, Jew and non-Jew. As Dr. Eskenazi has eloquently stated, “we want to bring the women of the Torah from the shadow into the limelight, from their silences into speech, from the margins to which they have often been relegated to the center of the page - for their sake, for our sake and for our children’s sake.”

This year’s mitzvah project benefits our Jewish youth by donating much-needed items to URJ Camp Newman and URJ Camp Kalsman. Camp Kalsman would love books with Jewish content for their library appropriate for ages 7-17. Camp Newman would appreciate donations of sports equipment, craft supplies and other things to support camp activities. A complete list will be posted on our website, but examples include basketballs, roller skates, colored permanent markers, music stands, alarm clocks and folding chairs. Your donations can be gently used items too. Use your imagination. This is going to be a fun and personal way to enrich our beloved summer camps. Your donations will help kids have a meaningful camp experience for years to come. Camp Kalsman director David Berkman is planning to attend our convention, to talk to us about how WRJ is helping to make a real difference in the life of our Jewish youth. Wouldn’t it be fun to turn over a big pile of books to him at that time? Dena Kaufman, alumni and development director of Camp Newman, was thrilled to hear of our mitzvah project. “We are very grateful for the support and encouragement from the Women of Reform Judaism,” she wrote in a note to the convention committee.

Follow Their Lead…
Renee and Irwin Holzman were so moved by the powerful and impassioned message in Rabbi Joseph’s Rosh Hashanah sermon about hunger, food insecurity and those everywhere in need that they felt compelled to make a very generous donation to CBI’s Social Action Fund. They took to heart this call to action. They have also encouraged their friends to follow their lead. This year the Social Action Committee is taking on the issue of hunger. From our preschoolers to our seniors, everyone can make a difference. The Holzmans are asking you to follow their lead. They want to challenge the entire congregation to get involved with the Social Action programs planned for the year, as well as making a contribution to the Social Action Fund. Together we can make a difference.

Remembering Your Loved Ones on the CBI Memorial Wall A yahrzeit plaque is a lasting tribute that ensures the memory of a loved one will be honored for all time. The purchase of a yahrzeit plaque guarantees a permanent fixture in the sanctuary plus a duplicate plaque for Pollin Chapel. The cost for a single name is $2,000; two names may be inscribed for $2500. Please contact Jemi Kostiner Mansfield at 503-222-1069 or jemi@bethisrael-pdx.org if you would like more information about this tradition.
