AUGUST
SENIOR GOLF’S STORIED MAJOR
The Senior PGA Championship, the most historic and prestigious major championship in senior golf, will celebrate its 85th competition in 2025. The Championship was born in 1937 on the grounds of another one of golf’s majors, at the invitation of one of the game’s greatest players. At the suggestion of renowned amateur Bobby Jones, the inaugural Senior PGA Championship was played at Augusta National Golf Club three years after the first Masters Tournament was held there. This Championship was established to provide the opportunity for PGA Members ages 50 and over to compete with their peers, and brings together the legends of the game and the newest members of senior professional golf for seventy-two holes of stroke play.
It was during the Senior PGA Championship in December 1979, at Turnberry Isle in North Miami, Fla., that informal meetings first were held among golf’s elder statesmen to explore the concept of a senior circuit.
As many of golf’s leading names passed age 50, they found they were no longer as competitive on the PGA Tour as they once had been, but outside of the Senior PGA Championship, playing opportunities were limited. The following month, January 1980, the Senior PGA Tour (now PGA Tour Champions) was founded.
In 2011, KitchenAid became a presenting sponsor and began an alliance with the Championship to present its talented field to new audiences throughout the country. In 2017, KitchenAid bolstered its commitment to golf and the Championship with its debut as title sponsor. After 13 years, KitchenAid’s title sponsorship came to a close in 2024.
Today, the Senior PGA Championship brings both the legends of the game and the newest members of senior professional golf to new audiences throughout the United States. The next Senior PGA Championship will be held May 22nd25th, 2025 at Congressional Country Club.
