Contributing this month...
Welcome Welcome to the April edition of CONNECTED.
Danny Gill This month we welcome Peterborough Cathedral as the new Chamber Charity of the Year for 2014/15. You can find out more about the charity and the Peterborough 900 development campaign on page 32. Shine were our charity for 2013/14 and we are delighted with the support from Chamber members in helping to raise awareness of the support they offer for individuals and families who face the challenges arising from spina bifida and hydrocephalus. From key events we raised a total of £1,400.00 and Karen Dawson, our Events and Training Co-ordinator, collected a further £282.00 from a sponsored swim. Charitable organisations depend on the support and donation from companies and individuals. If you would like to find out more about how you can get involved with supporting local charities, please get in touch with helen Bosett who can link you up with members of our Social Enterprise and Charity Sector.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S COMMENT |
Future Growth With a general election just around the corner, now is the time to tackle the dominant political parties on the big issues. Building on the recent publication of the British Chambers of Commerce Skills and Employment Manifesto, to which members of our own Chamber made a valuable contribution, recent weeks have been spent urging George Osborne to use his all-important budget speech to focus on youth employment, training and enterprise. Our message is simple. We need investment in young people today to secure Britain’s future growth. The manifesto identified a clear lack of skills in many young people who recruiting businesses find to be ill-prepared for the workplace, and young people are nearly three times as likely to be unemployed compared with the rest of the UK population. To play our part in addressing this, we will shortly be announcing our own initiative to bring employers and young people together locally in order to improve readiness for the world of work. Meanwhile on a national level, three key proposals were recently put to the Chancellor by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) on behalf of Chamber member businesses. The first was for a new £100m Future Workforce Grant scheme, providing a £1,000 payment to businesses who hire long-term unemployed young people or a new apprentice in order to create 100,000 new jobs in 2014. This will help to bridge the gap before the national insurance exemption for under 21s is introduced in 2015. Secondly, a two-year extension to the successful Apprenticeships Grant for Employers (AGE) scheme to help create 80,000 additional apprenticeships, as demand from candidates has outstripped supply of apprenticeship vacancies by as much as 12 to one.
Finally, we proposed increased tax relief to encourage investment in young entrepreneurs. Increasing the tax relief available through the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) from 30 per cent to 50 per cent for investors in businesses run by under-24s would, we believe, help more young people set up and grow their own business. As always, there’s a cost involved and in the case of these three proposals and it’s just under £400million. That price tag puts it less than 0.02 per cent of government current spending for the next three years. We believe that’s a small price to pay to provide our businesses with the skills they need to grow, and young people with the skills and support they need to contribute to that growth. By the time you read this you will know whether or not the Chancellor has listened.
John Bridge OBE Chief Executive, Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce

Celebrating 40 Years in the Mouldings Industry JRD Rubber Mouldings was founded in 1974 with the aim of specialising in the manufacture of high quality rubber and rubber to metal bonded products, produced to exacting customer specifications. The company initially specialised in the supply of seals to the bearing industry, but in 1978 commenced a strategy of diversification into other industries. Whilst still remaining a major supplier to the bearing industry, the existing customer base covers a wide range of industries, including automotive, transportation, domestic appliances, heating and electronics.
2013 was the best in the 40 year history Due to continued expansion, the company moved to larger premises in 1979 and extended these again in 1988 and 1995. Currently, JRD has 13,000 sq ft of manufacturing space available with an additional 4,500 sq ft for future expansion. Their main site in Soham comprises two units totalling 20,000 sq ft. The company commenced exporting in 1982 and has continued to pursue a policy of expansion into specialised areas and now exports to Europe, Scandinavia, North and South America and the Far East.

JRD Rubber Mouldings offer a complete service, covering component design, material selection and tool design. They also cater for manufacture of prototype samples, small batch and high volume production. In 2013 they finished their acquisition of a very good rubber mould toolmaker. Tim Hooker, Commercial Director, said: “The acquisition of PRM Engineering Ltd was very exciting for us and allowed us to have more control on the tooling design to meet our demanding customer needs. This gives us a lot of stability in the market place as it shows our customers that we are still willing to make investment to improve our overall position.” 2014 celebrates 40 years in the Mouldings Industry. Tim comments: “The last few years have been challenging. Like everyone else in manufacturing, we had to ride the storm out in 2009. However, with hard work and determination, we were able to then build back up to a point where in 2013, we saw the best year in the company’s history. On a personal note, it is sad that all of the original founders are no longer with us. John, Ron and Des (hence JRD), would be very happy to see
their company benefit from this turnaround and success. “We are optimistic about 2014 and as such, continue to try to acquire more business with some of our existing high profile customers. We are still making significant investments in new equipment and also in the process of acquiring a small bespoke bearing seal design company. As such, we feel that we will continue to serve our customers in the best way that we can in the years to come.” n

Wyboston Lakes rated ‘outstanding’ Conference, training and leisure venue Wyboston Lakes has achieved two out of a possible three-star rating in the prestigious Sunday Times ‘Best Companies’ accreditation standard. The two-star status, awarded on the basis of employee feedback, means that the venue is considered an ‘outstanding’ employer in terms of the way it engages with its staff. The independent ‘Best Companies’ accreditation is regarded as among the UK’s most reliable and thorough processes for assessing the merits of organisations from all sectors, in terms of the way they encourage, motivate and generally engage with their employees. The surveys are carried out
by means of questionnaires and interviews seeking responses from staff on a range of issues. “Our team is our business - the rest is bricks and mortar. We live or die by the positive experiences we give to our customers - whether they are with us for training, a conference, a hotel stay, golf or to use our fabulous Y Spa. COMMS-SOLVE technologies limited
Gardner Cultivates Cloud Development Ty Gardner is a man on a mission. The task he has set himself is to educate Cambridgeshire and North Herts enterprises about the changing business communications climate which is fast becoming very ‘Cloudy’ indeed.
Whilst ‘The Cloud’ is a terminology continuously discussed by IT and communications professionals most businesses still see it as a highly complex technology that sounds costly and confusing.
The MD of Barkway based Comms-Solve Technologies is convinced many businesses still lack an understanding of how much better companies could communicate with their customers, staff and suppliers by embracing internet based communications technology. “It’s not rocket science but it’s a paradigm shift that growth seeking companies should learn about and embrace as soon as possible,” says Ty Gardner.

The shift to ‘Cloud’ communications is being driven by tech savvy employees familiar with working on their handheld devices any time, any place, anywhere.
Cambridge Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Seminar on April 11th.
“For businesses that want to remain competitive, the movement to the Cloud is not a question of if, but a question of when,” argues Ty.
So what exactly is it? “Put simply, the Cloud advances the way businesses can integrate their familiar IT and communication services into a single connectivity platform, “explains Ty. “It offers business the flexibility to deploy services rapidly, gives people the means to access and integrate devices from anywhere, and crucially, brings security, seamless working and collaborative working to organisations whatever their type or size.”
know that it just works, simple. The Cloud is no different. Don’t worry about the how, worry about the why.” Based in eco-friendly offices on the stunning Cokenach country estate, Comms-Solve Technologies use all of the products and services they sell to their customers in house, as Ty outlines.
Recent research conducted by the ‘Cloud Industry Forum’ concluded that 69% of UK firms have adopted at least one cloud-based service. By the end of 2014, this is predicted to breach the 80% mark.
“I am proud to say that our technical people really know their stuff and are ready and willing to spend time with company representatives, understand the issues they are facing, and their future expectations and deliver solutions that are Opex based which means capital expenditure is vastly minimised.”
“Reluctance of transitioning to Cloud communications often stems from a fear of change and a lack of understanding. Ask yourself; are you reluctant to use an iPod instead of an old fashioned cassette player because you cannot see what is going on? No. You press play and
Comms-Solve Technologies will begin their Cloud education process in earnest at the Huntingdonshire Business Fair on April 3rd and will also be hosting the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Seminar on April 11th.

ASK THE EXPERT |
Ask the expert: Using video as a communication tool Simon Wardle, Principal at elDRAW Creative Media, comments on using video in business.
Q A
There is a lot of talk about video. How important is it?
The short answer is, it is the future for many companies to embrace now. In an article in February 2014 in the Guardian, there was a statement which read ‘by 2017 69 per cent of all web content will be delivered by video’. That is a massive growth over the next three years, but increasingly the quality and the originality of the content will be key. Wobbly I-pad and poor sound phone films will reflect poorly when you’re selling expertise and quality. You wouldn’t do scrappy literature, then don’t do scrappy video! One of the key advantages to video is the way it brings Search Engine Optimisation,(SEO) or in other words your web presence, to the top of the searches. Once there, well delivered content is proven to be more memorable, more impacting and more informative, so benefitting sales. In the same way as you and I buy from knowledgeable people, so video imparts that knowledge and the reflection of your company offering a professional service. So by getting to the top of the queue now, then those companies will stay ahead instead of catching up.
Q
What style of video is best?
A
Video carries many uses and styles. Testimonial videos speak volumes of sincerity and they can be made hugely interesting and not just a boring interview. Product and service videos can show the detail and care you spend years developing and if fear of cameras is an issue, then voice-over or music and graphics add a great dimension. Social media increases significantly with mini video clips and short informative pieces.
Q A
What’s involved in making a video?
The first answer should be planning. Good planning uncovers any potential pitfalls and means when it comes to filming, disruption is kept to a minimum and everyone knows what is going on and where. Then it’s a case of ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ followed by a lot of fun. It’s never as bad or as intimidating as many imagine. Whatever style or type of video you choose, experienced editing and script optimisation and interactive video players will add hugely to its web visibility and effectiveness in use.
Q
What sort of budget is involved?
A
Video can cost just a few hundred pounds to a few thousand pounds. The payback and potential of video surprises most people and done correctly it will become profitable and productive, particularly combined with payment plans. My advice is to keep an open mind and explore the opportunity. It’s a great investment. If you’re serious about your business then video should be on your ‘to do’ list sooner rather than later.
Q
So, why shouldn’t I just make my own video?
A
These days everyone owns a tablet or a smart phone, so doing a degree of video is quite easy. However in the same way as homemade literature or a poor website reflects poorly on a professional image, a well-made video speaks volumes, both in impression and showing professional intent. In fact a poor video probably does more damage than no video at all and even if you manage to pull off a reasonable result, will you know how to optimise it effectively or get maximum effect from say YouTube or Vimeo email or social media opportunities. n

Tim Leathes Project Director, Urban&Civic Having previously worked on the Athletes’ Village for the London Olympics and helping post-Tsunami reconstruction, Tim Leathes is now leading the transformation of one of the UK’s largest brownfield sites into a 150 hectare Enterprise Campus and residential development. Urban&Civic is a strategic property development group that focuses on long-term transformative developments. Unlike many property development companies, Urban&Civic likes to work on large-scale projects to ensure it brings forward integrated schemes for working and living. “It’s not just about building houses,” says Tim Leathes, Project Leader of Urban&Civic’s Alconbury Weald development. ”It’s about building communities, and that includes creating a proper transport infrastructure, schools, health centres and business spaces to bring local jobs. “Developing places at that scale enables you to be innovative in approaches on energy generation, water use and design. Having a
long term business model also means you can make the investment you need in the long term to get enduring quality from the first tree to the last brick.” “Critically, we develop the plans for a site on this scale in partnership. We had a strong vision for what Alconbury could be, but have refined that through three years of discussion with local authorities, partners and communities to come up with the detailed plans that are crafting Alconbury Weald.”
Taking a ‘Hands On’ Approach Urban&Civic owns the land on which Alconbury Weald is being built, however it is by no means taking a back seat in the development process. Tim’s role is to oversee

the team and drive it to deliver progress. “We take a very hands on approach to our projects, and oversee the planning, design and implementation. For the Enterprise Campus we’re working alongside Huntingdonshire District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council and the LEP – who are sponsoring the Campus’ Government-backed Enterprise Zone status. For the residential development and landscaping, we have worked with partners, local communities and the statutory authorities to agree the approach, the timing and delivery and ongoing maintenance of shared space and community facilities. “We will maintain that strategic role going forward to ensure a consistent and coherent approach that reflects our aspirations for a high quality, low carbon development.“
IN THE HOTSEAT |
A Closer Look At The Incubator The Incubator is the flagship building of the Enterprise Campus, and was designed to offer start-up support for small businesses and space for research and development, production and offices. Having finished production in December 2013, the building is now open and is already attracting tenants.“The space within the building can be divided up in a number of ways to suit the individual needs of businesses,” says Tim. “We also have hotdesking space and business support, which will evolve to reflect the needs of the tenants as they move in. “We worked with internationally-acclaimed architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris to develop the building. Critically, we wanted to maximise the amount of networking and meeting space so that it really becomes an early hub for businesses coming to the site and to engage business networks across the local area. “We ensured the building’s meeting rooms were set in the tower, so that you have incredible views out over the whole site and much of Huntingdon. The building is also very much a show-case for some of the low carbon techniques we will be bringing to the site, but it is also about creating inspiring space in which businesses can flourish. There is not a great deal of that on the market at the moment, and we wanted to set the design bar high for the Campus. We are really excited to now be in there and starting to sign up tenants.”
The Big Picture
Successful production from new tenants
Alconbury Weald is set to take 20 years to complete and will deliver 8,000 jobs from the nearly 3 million sq ft of commercial space planned, 5,000 homes and 283 hectares of green space. The Enterprise Campus – which makes up about a quarter of the site – is predicted to be a major driver for economic growth within the local economy. “The Enterprise Campus will provide quality space for inward investment and additional grow-on space for established local companies. It will allow local companies to do more of the ‘D’ of R&D which, at the moment, often seems to go outside of this area (if not this country) and so is lost to the local economy. As such the Campus is seen as a real way of strengthening and diversifying the economic potential of
the area. The process of bringing forward a brownfield site to drive that additional growth potential is in itself a real boost to construction, engineering and its supply chain.
Alconbury will deliver 8k jobs, 5k homes and 283 hectares of green space “Being an Enterprise Zone we also provide business benefits to companies, including business rates discounts, simplified planning and superfast broadband as well as a full design, build and project management team to help businesses make the move. At the moment we are at the start of turning that vision into reality and the Incubator building is a real statement of intent.”
Well Connected One of the main strengths of the site is its location on the main north-south transport corridors of the country. “With close links to the East-West A14, you can easily get to London, to Cambridge and Peterborough, and pretty much each corner of the UK,” continues Tim. “Furthermore the fact that the Enterprise Campus sits between the global innovation hub of Cambridge and the environmental services cluster of Peterborough, surrounded by some cutting edge manufacturing and composites companies in Huntingdonshire, means that it is a great place to attract inward investment. “This area has the links, the skills and supply chains that companies need, and that translates into real jobs for the local economy.“
Growing Together Tim concludes by saying: “The great thing for companies coming to the site early is they have the chance to shape the future Campus, and to grow with us. It’s now that we can be most flexible to give businesses the location and space that meets their needs, as well as securing future expansion space. We have some really innovative, energetic and ambitious companies coming into the site, and we want to create a dynamic environment in which they can set down roots and grow.” To find out more about Urban&Civic and the Alconbury Weald project, visit: alconbury-weald.co.uk n

Policy UPDATE Keeping you informed, representing local business
Business Award Season April continues the Business Award season and if you haven’t entered a business award before just take a few minutes to think about whether your business should be an award winner this year. A major motivation for entering awards is the positive impact winning an award makes to your success. People like doing business with successful businesses and people like working for successful businesses. Winning an award is an excellent way to demonstrate that your business is an excellent business and to show recognition for the contribution your employees make to your success. You don’t even have to be an outright winner to gain these benefits; becoming a finalist will provide positive press coverage and furnish you with lots of certificates to put on your wall, your website and your stationery. It takes time and effort to complete a winning award application, but most finalists say they find the process of completing the entry form and even the judging process very positive. Simply allowing yourself time to think about what it is that makes your business great can be really valuable. Over recent years many Chamber members have won business awards and having entered once they usually try for other awards. Completing your first entry form can be a little daunting so here are a few tips:
• Read the award criteria carefully and only
enter the most appropriate categories – you would be surprised how many entrants don’t qualify for the category they have entered and therefore get disqualified

| CHAMBER CHARITY OF THE YEAR
Welcome Peterborough Cathedral
W
e are extremely honoured and very grateful that Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce has chosen Peterborough 900 as its charity of the year for 2014-15. The life of the city of Peterborough and the surrounding region has been interdependent with that of the Norman Abbey and Cathedral church for the last 900 years. This is reflected today in the Corporate Partnerships that have been established with
Peterborough 900. It is our hope that working together in this way will benefit not only the Cathedral and Commerce but also the wider community. Charles Taylor, Dean of Peterborough
WHAT IS PETERBOROUGH 900? IN 2018 we will celebrate 900 years since work began to build the great Norman Abbey which we know today as Peterborough Cathedral. The Peterborough 900 Development Campaign has been launched to generate
the necessary financial support to ensure that the Cathedral can continue to respond to the changing needs of the people we serve. Over the next few years the campaign will enable us to develop new facilities for faith, heritage and music education, visitor enjoyment and worship and a wide range of public events. The campaign depends on the support of our friends, offering in return a unique opportunity to make a tangible contribution to the lives of thousands of people for generations to come. Already more than 40 companies have committed their support through our Corporate Partnership scheme. For more information about how you can get involved, contact our P900 Campaign Team. ■
News from Peterborough Cathedral PETERBOROUGH 900 Corporate Partners were invited to a business breakfast at the Cathedral in February to celebrate the launch of a new line of Peterborough 900 Fairtrade coffee. The delicious Colombian coffee is sourced from one of Peterborough 900’s newest Corporate Partners, Masteroast. It will be offered throughout the Cathedral’s hospitality and is on sale in the Cathedral Shop. The breakfast was a great opportunity for Corporate Partners to meet one another. More events of this kind are planned during the coming months. ■
Spotlight on history DID you know that the fantastic vaulted ceiling in the New Building at Peterborough Cathedral (built around 1500) was executed by architect John Wastell, who went on to create the ceiling at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge? The New Building is the setting for business receptions, exhibitions and dinners. ■

The Reserve Forces are changing
It has been widely reported in the National Press that the Government is changing the way the Armed Forces is manned and how it’s personnel will be deployed. THE Reserve Forces will, by 2018, account for one-third of our Armed Forces and this article gives an insight into the extraordinary men and women (Reservists) who are our Reserve Forces and the support given to them by their civilian Employers. Reservists, in the main, have full-time civilian employment and undertake their reservist duties during the evenings and weekends so that time out of the workplace is kept to a minimum. As an employer it is important to understand the practical and personal skills their specialist training gives them and with this in mind SaBRE – Supporting Britain’s Reservists and Employers has produced a series of leaflets that explain the transferable skills available, all endorsed by the Chartered Management Institute. The average Reservist receives training in transferable skills which could cost a Company £8,000 per annum to deliver so, as an employer, it is essential that you are able to tap into their full potential. Employers are not obliged by law to provide extra days off work, either paid or unpaid, to facilitate Reserve Forces training and courses but many do as the benefits gained become apparent in the workplace.
“We’re proud to support our Reservists not just from a community sense but from a sound business case. The training they bring back is first class in interpersonal skills, selfreliance and fitness. The training they receive in leadership, communication skills and the like is a great boon to the business.” Bob Page Head of HR, Hutchinson Ports UK
Developing your HR Policy to include your Reservist policy ensures clear guidelines for both Managers and Reservists. To find out more about our Reserve Forces please contact me. n Kristina Carrington Regional SaBRE Campaign Director Email: ea-empsp@rfca.mod.uk Tel: 01245-244817

Report from Ian MacKellar
Ely Eel Festival Ely Cathedral may be well into its 10th century, but the city’s rather younger Eel Festival is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Elymologists may disagree on the precise derivation of Ely’s name, but the balance of probability is that it has to do with the fish that have been taken for millennia from the Great Ouse and the freshwater marshes that used to surround Ely before the Fens were drained. Indeed, the magnificent Octagon in the cathedral is built from stone quarried in the diocese of Peterborough and reputedly paid for by the supply of 8,000 eels a year to the Soke’s prelate. Lest its heritage be forgotten, East Cambs District Council created the city’s Eel Trail a decade ago, taking visitors on an hourlong historical and cultural walk from Oliver Crowell’s House, through the city centre, market and open spaces to the riverside,
guided by 87 brass eel-designated waymarks. “Ely has expanded massively in the last quarter of a century, more or less doubling in population,” says the council’s Tourism Team Leader, Tracey Harding, “so it’s important for residents to revive their cultural traditions.”
businesses have the opportunity to get involved A new ‘tradition’ during this year’s Eel Festival Weekend – from 2-5 May – is to be the first Ely Food and Drink Festival, taking place on the Sunday and Monday on Palace Green, in the lee of the Ship of the Fens. The council is still keeping the details under wraps, but the festival will also include an Eel Food Safari, with a variety of venues providing eel-inspired dishes and menus and details provided on an ‘app’, the Saturday Eel Day Parade, and the World Eel-Throwing Championships (during which no animal will be harmed).
Businesses are still working out how to become involved, though the festival coincides with National Yarn Shop Day, organised by Let’s Knit magazine, the editor of which will be visiting Ely’s awardwinning Yarn on the Square in Market Place. “We haven’t finally decided how to celebrate, but we’re thinking about a pop-up shop so that people can have a go at knitting an eel on four needles,” said co-owner Ginette Heard. Such things put me in mind of a cautionary tale I saw in the 1960s, set out on the bar of a pub on what were then the borders of Westmorland and the West Riding of Yorkshire – now, rather prosaically, part of Cumbria. It was entitled The Fisherman and started something like this: “Behold the fisherman. He riseth up early in the morning and disturbeth the whole household. Mighty are his preparations. He goeth forth full of hope,” and concluded: “When the day is spent, he returneth, smelling of strong drink, and the truth is not in him.” n

Good Riddance to Windows XP That’s right, good riddance. You may be surprised to hear that, but it’s said with good reason. Windows XP is reliable, user-friendly and from a technical perspective, IT guys and girls couldn’t complain…up until the last few years. But put quite simply, it’s not assisting the advancement of modern technology – it’s hindering it. Support for Windows XP will cease in April, ending the reign of the once revolutionary Microsoft operating system. Users will initially continue to use XP, but the lack of updates and additional security threats will lead to vulnerabilities unacceptable within business, meaning that eventually we’ll all have to upgrade. And when you consider Windows 8 is the likely destination, that thought may seem a little daunting. But it shouldn’t. Windows 8 has had its teething issues, but the features it brings to the table make
UK, have also announced that they will end support for systems operated on Windows XP as of January 2015 and October 2014 respectively. Running on modern operating systems, these products offer greater flexibility and operational capacities to the businesses working with them. It is predicted that this will be a common trend amongst software developers globally, as a step to ensuring the continued evolution of our technology and the way we do business successfully. Of course we don’t want to switch systems every time something new happens. The reliability of Windows XP gratefully provided
14+ years of consistency for many. Technology has changed considerably over that period of time and so has the use of it. The question

The true potential of social media – for business and recreation – is allowed to thrive and all thanks to the operating system that will essentially improve communications throughout. It’s not just our ability to communicate that Windows XP has suppressed either. The latest software available today can only operate as well as the system it runs on and XP users are subsequently unable to capitalise on the full benefits which can truly make huge differences in organisational performance. 2. Don’t take rejection personally – you can’t win every assignment!
What do you do in business?
I am a licensed Insolvency Practitioner, I have been advising the stakeholders of owner managed businesses for over 30 years. On 1 May 2009 I launched the Cambridge office of Begbies Traynor where I am the managing partner.
Q A
What are your top three tips for running or working in a business? 1. Running a business is not a 9-5 job; you have to build your lifestyle around it.
3. Use networking to help other people make the right connections and win work – the rest will follow.
Q A Q A
What do you do to unwind?
Yoga, walking my dog and, most importantly, drinking wine. What’s your favourite book and why?
The Secret History by Donna Tartt. This book, apart from being immensely
Mary Currie-Smith
readable, is a fascinating portrayal of revenge, misplaced loyalty and deceit.
Q A
What value do you get from being a Chamber member?
When I set up this office the Chamber provided great networking opportunities, but more important was the moral support I got from the committee and other members. I am on the Chamber board and it has given me a great insight into how much the Chamber contributes to their local business communities. n
Management Training Workshops Using personal profiling programme DISC to understand oneself was well received at the second in the series of Women in Management workshops. of the discussions were very positive!! I feel empowered with the knowledge that there are many ways to achieve the desired outcome! Export Licences SEIZED! That is not a word you wish to read in a letter to you from HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs). This is exactly what a local Cambridgeshire company experienced when they attempted to export a computer server to Zimbabwe. They were completely unaware of our Government’s export licensing regulations, but unfortunately ignorance is no defence. It is your job, as exporter of the goods, to ensure that you are up-to-date with our rules and regulations, flouting these can lead to severe penalties, even prosecution. A good place to start would be www.gov.uk. Search for ‘Sanctions and Embargoes’, which will reveal a list of restricted countries and/or individuals. You will also find the UK Strategic Lists; Export Control Lists 2008. If your product is designed for military use, then search the Military Lists for the ML number relevant to your goods and/or software and/or technology. Otherwise search the dual use lists, to see if an export licence may be required. To apply for an export licence, visit www.spire.bis.gov.uk. You will need a Spire account, but this is quick and simple to set up. The website provides guidance as to the types of export licences available and how to apply. Act early, as soon as you receive the purchase order, as licence applications can take up to 20 business days to be processed. Be aware, be compliant, be safe. n Source: Margaret Chadwick, Chadwick Export Services Ltd
