Great Eastern Run PETERBOROUGH’S Perkins Great Eastern Run attracts athletes from across the world, with last year’s event welcoming over 4,400 competitors from as far afield as the USA, Hong Kong and Kenya. It puts the city firmly in the spotlight and gives us all an opportunity to collectively showcase everything Peterborough has to offer. The annual half marathon returns later this year on Sunday 13 October. It’s not only a chance for individuals to raise money for their charity of choice, it’s also a great motivation for businesses to promote teamwork and community involvement within their own organisations by encouraging employees to enter as a company team. Challenges like this, set outside the usual scope of the business, encourage employees to enhance their communication skills because they often entail solving problems for which they don’t already have an answer. They also have to think creatively, and assess each other’s strengths in a whole new light. The skills they learn will then be easily employable upon returning to the workplace. Here at the Chamber we are so keen for our members to get behind this great community event that we are offering an

award for the best company team. Entrants won’t be judged just on finishing times, but on how the company works as a team to raise money for charity and how it inspires others to do the same. The benefits? Well that will be down to you, but at the very least, there will be a little more in the coffers of the charity you choose to support. Park View goes back to the future

22 MAY 2013 marked the memorable time capsule burial at Luminus’ newest Extra Care Scheme, Park View, Huntingdon. Luminus welcomed local dignitaries, special guests, local residents and employees to the official sealing of the time capsule. The capsule, which has been buried in the resident’s garden, has been commemorated with an engraved granite memorial slab. The time capsule, which is due to be opened in 2063, contains a range of items to represent the life of Huntingdon in 2013. This exciting and inspirational event was attended by pupils from Huntingdon Primary School. Park View residents also attended to witness the burial and show their appreciation to Luminus. Dr Abraham concluded by thanking everyone in the community for all their help and support. n

St Neots’ Business Showcase a sell-out! 30 LOCAL businesses are exhibiting on the Market Square to promote their products and services on Friday 12 July. Businesses from across the town, representing a wide breadth of industry sectors, will widen their client base by attracting new customers and reaching new markets. Many of them will be distributing samples and promoting special offers as well. The event is being organised by St Neots Town Council in partnership with Huntingdonshire Chamber of Commerce. Come along to St Neots Market Square from 11.00am-2.00pm to browse the exhibitors’ stalls. He was visiting Cambridge for the first time in 20 years to speak at the 2013 Global Scholars Symposium. A media conference gave Alan a wonderful opportunity to capture the Dalai Lama from only a few feet away.

The Lilac James Co. has launched a search for ‘the apprentice’, an opportunity for a young person to compete for a digital apprenticeship position. Karen James, Director, said: “I am a great believer in training within the workplace. The apprentice route offers a viable and cost effective alternative that provides invaluable experience. “The successful candidate will be awarded an apprenticeship under a new organisation, the Digital Youth Academy, which seeks to connect the digital generation to business and has created a learning pathway in social and digital media. A-maizing time at college farm LAND at the College of West Anglia’s Woodside Farm in Cambridge is being used for the first time for the production of biofuels from a 50-acre field of maize. The college has a commercial arrangement with an Ely-based company to convert the crop to bio-fuel once it is harvested. Linda Kirby, Agricultural Director at the campus, said it is the first time maize has been grown on the farm: “Due to the extreme wet weather last year we were faced with the decision to buy in relatively expensive spring wheat seed or grow maize on a contract with a guaranteed income.” Linda, helped by lecturer Guy Kiddy and students, has undertaken some of the cultivation work and the maize will be sown shortly. Students will have some involvement but the Ely company will largely undertake the upkeep. Students will be able to add to their agricultural knowledge as the bio-fuel company will give them an insight into its state-of-the-art vehicles and machinery and they will be invited to see how the maize crop is transformed into bio-fuel at the company’s own production plant. n

Flying the flag for service veterans FOR the fifth year, Fenland District Council hosted a special ceremony to pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of our servicemen and women. All former members of the armed services were invited to attend a flag-raising ceremony and parade of standards on Monday 24 June at Fenland Hall, March. The event, hosted by Councillor Ken Mayor, FDC’s chairman, took place a few days before the official Armed Forces Day on 29 June. n

IN BRIEF JULY 2013 Acquisition for Cambridge Life Sciences (CLS) CLS has acquired Hillside Medical Supplies Ltd (Hillside Medical), a medical supplies company specialising in the sale of a wide variety of medical supplies and diagnostic devices. This acquisition provides a vehicle for CLS to access this developing near patient testing market, as well as allowing some of the more specialist devices available to Hillside Medical to be sold into the UK hospital market in support of the CLS product range.

IN BRIEF JULY 2013 Waterland save Lollipop Lady Oundle Primary School faced losing its lollipop lady due to withdrawn funding. Waterland Associates, proud of its links with the local community, has agreed to pay half the cost for the lollipop lady so that, along with Oundle Town Council, it can protect this wonderful community asset. David Smith, Principal Architect, said: “A lollipop lady is a real symbol of how much a community cares for its children and we are happy to help the town provide this important service.”

Strictly couple help local charity STRICTLY Come Dancing royalty James and Ola Jordan wowed guests at a recent charity event, hosted by the NSPCC’S Peterborough Business Support Group. The glamorous pair were the headline act for the black tie event, which raised over £4,000 for the NSPCC service centre in Peterborough. The Holiday Inn West in Thorpe Wood was the venue for the evening, which saw over

200 people enjoy a drinks reception, three course meal, raffle and auction. Individual dances with both James and Ola were auctioned off to the highest bidders, each making a significant contribution to the total raised on the evening, all of which is used to help vulnerable children in the Greater Peterborough area. n

Four qualifiers boost legal team Roythornes solicitors boost its legal team as four members of staff complete their training and qualify as Solicitors. Having spent the last two years training, they now take up permanent positions in some of Roythornes specialist teams. The four are Sarah Whitehurst (Property Litigation, Spalding), Rebecca Jackson (Property, Spalding), Lisa Millington (Private Client, Spalding) and Claire Trolove (Property Litigation, Peterborough). Partner Phil Cookson, who runs the firms training scheme, said: “We’re delighted that the four have qualified and will be staying with the firm to help us maintain our strong position in the region. Training to be a solicitor is a long process which takes commitment and hard work and we congratulate them on their success.”

STUDENTS studying BEng Integrated Engineering and BSc Computing and Information Systems took part in the annual exhibition to showcase their major piece of research or development work undertaken during their final year. Nearly 20 computing professionals attended from local firms to give feedback and career advice. Second-year student Sam Gale said: “It is a great opportunity to show off our final major projects to fellow students, staff and local employers.” The event was a great success and some students were approached by companies for their CVs, which is a great achievement. n

IN BRIEF JULY 2013 Metrix boost £6m appeal Metrix finance director Judy Anderson presented a cheque for £370 to Kate Daimond, a regional fundraiser at the Thorpe Hall hospice, at an event that challenged chocolate lovers to try and recognise exotic flavours blended into different types of chocolate. The money raised goes towards the Sue Ryder hospices £6 million appeal to improve quality of care for patients. Kate Daimond said: “It was great to see so many people come out to help raise funds for the hospice appeal. We are grateful to Metrix Marketing for organising this event.” Judy Anderson added: “We are privileged to be in a position to assist a good cause like Thorpe Hall hospice and it is great to be able to hand over a cheque to Kate and her fundraising team.“

Briefs train fire commanders CHARLOTTE Wilce and Peter Collins, Barristers at Regency Chambers, recently provided court training sessions for Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service Watch Commanders. The training was designed to prepare Watch Commanders with what to expect when attending court to give evidence as part of arson investigations, from the first steps inside the court room right through to giving evidence and being cross examined. The training was well received, with delegates taking the opportunity to quiz the barristers throughout the session. Peter commented: “The feedback from all the delegates reflected the positivity and productiveness of the sessions. We

were able to demystify many parts of the court experience when giving evidence. The training was very much two way with plenty of challenging questions for us to answer as

The sessions were positive and productive well as us providing tips and techniques on how best to cope with courtroom tactics.” Peter and Charlotte are planning to build on the success of these sessions, and are looking to offer similar training courses around the country over the coming months. n

Anne Corder Recruitment move The company, based in the city centre for 18 years, has just completed a major refurbishment project on 25 Commerce Road on the Lynch Wood Business Park. “This is an exciting move for us and simply reflects the way in which recruitment has changed,” said Anne Corder. “Candidates now provide CVs digitally rather than visiting us. Our new offices have ample parking making life easier for those attending interviews and for our own staff. We have more space, more interview and conference rooms and we are in the midst of many of our existing and potential business clients. “We are very excited to be operating from our new offices, which are just so much more user-friendly in a great location near the A1 with excellent public transport.”

Eco law firm go Green HUNT & Coombs were the first law firm in the country to be awarded the prestigious ‘Green’ award at the Investors in the Environment ceremony in April. A not for profit accreditation scheme, the iiE is designed to help businesses reduce their impact on the environment, and play a key part in helping Peterborough continue its mission to become the environment capital. Sponsored by Lark Renewables, businesses from all over the region were recognised for their environmental efforts.

Senior Director Denis White commented: “We are delighted to once again receive the Investors in the Environment award. It’s apparent that more businesses are recognising the importance of creating a sustainable future for all. Staff at Hunt & Coombs have been extremely supportive and, through encouragement over recent years, we have continued to reduce our carbon footprint and have plans in place to ensure this continues.” n

Silver award for Lindum LINDUM has received ‘silver’ in this year’s RoSPA (the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Health and Safety Awards, in recognition of its approach to occupational safety and health. David Bellingham, Group Health & Safety Co-ordinator for Lindum, attended the awards ceremony held in Brimingham. He said: “This is the fourth consecutive year that we have received a RoSPA Award and, coming from the lead industry body for Health & Safety, this is a very welcome endorsement, recognising the efforts Lindum makes to ensure that our sites and employees operate safe working practices.” The RoSPA Awards scheme recognises commitment to accident and ill health prevention. The scheme not only looks at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement. David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “Lindum Group has shown it is committed to striving for continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it through the presentation of an award.” n

Building a team that can support you as you bring the vision to life can be an unexpected challenge. People are by far the most unpredictable element of growth and most employers will provide at least a basic contract for new staff. While it’s easy to download a standard contract template from the internet, this might not be right for your business and could turn out to be limiting in the future. Specific policies, for example, those relating to disciplinary and grievance procedures need to be handled carefully. Getting the framework right as you expand will save a lot of hassle in the future when you have many more staff and are personally less involved in the day-to-day HR activity. Although standard contracts will be designed to protect you in terms of Employment Law, everything contained in an allencompassing contract can be cumbersome and unrealistic for a small business. Having appropriate documents will also give a positive message to any new staff – showing that you are a good employer, take HR seriously and want everyone to feel valued as they help the vision become a reality.

Night flights given the all clear EAST Anglian Air Ambulance has been given the all clear to start first UK night air ambulance missions. More lives will be saved across the eastern region now that a dedicated air ambulance has made history and been granted permission to fly helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) missions at night. Tim Page, Chief Executive of EAAA, said: “We are all extremely proud to be able to say that EAAA is the first dedicated air ambulance in the country to be granted permission to fly at night but, above all, this is great news for the people of East Anglia as there is evidence that this development in operations will mean that more lives will be saved across the region.”

The charity believes that it will be able to attend around 30 per cent more missions, helping an estimated 300 more patients a year now it is able to operate in the dark as well as daylight hours. n

Safebox support local bash Cambridge-based document and data storage company Safebox were recently approached by the West Wratting Music Bash committee to be a sponsor for the main stage of the annual event. The Bash – due to take place on 29 June – raises money for not only the East Anglian Children’s Hospice but also for the up-keep and improvement of the village sports facilities and football club.

RUTH Booy, Partner and Head of Injury Services at Ashton KCJ, and Justina Molloy, Personal Injury associate, have successfully completed the ‘Bobby on a Bike’ challenge. They cycled 373 miles from the East Anglian coast to the west coast of Wales in four days to raise funds for the emergency medical charity, Magpas, and SSAFA (the National Armed Forces Charity). 62 cyclists took part and 54, including Ruth and Justina, completed it. They started out on Sunday 19 May in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. The final leg of the journey on Wednesday 22 May was perhaps the most challenging; they cycled through gale force head winds and reached 8,000ft as they tackled the relentless hills and mountains of mid Wales, finally reaching the finishing line in Aberystwyth after 11 hours 30 minutes of cycling and 87 miles. n

Cubiqdesign reflects on its success MIDWAY through the year Cubiqdesign is reporting a positive start, reflecting on its triumphs to date. The first half of the year has seen double digit growth for the company, due to significant new client wins, including Newmarket Racecourses. “We were particularly proud to be announced as the creative agency for Newmarket Racecourses, with this being such an iconic brand within our local town”, says John Treby, Director of Cubiqdesign. Taking control over the 2013 creative facelift for Newmarket Racecourses included brand evolution, advertising,

direct mail, large format print and brochures. This has meant further expansion for Cubiqdesign, with the company taking on three new Designers, an Account Manager and a PR & Marketing Executive.

Richard Garwell Manufacturing Advisor, MAS (Manufacturing Advisory Service) With a background predominantly in aerospace and automotive engineering and development, Richard Garwell is a perfect fit in his role as Manufacturing Advisor at MAS. Prior to joining the company three years ago, he had already gained experience in some of Britain’s most prestigious manufacturing companies.

“WE’RE a government funded service and our prime objective is to support the SME manufacturing sector in England,” says Richard Garwell, who is responsible for providing professional advice to manufacturing companies across the six counties of the Eastern region. Richard typically spends his days either visiting companies to review their businesses or spending several days with a single company to deliver more in-depth projects. “We’ve existed since 2002 and have helped thousands of companies over that period. Historically our remit has been to focus on operational improvements, productivity and strategy, but in more recent times we’ve been more concentrated on growth. “Since the beginning of 2012, we have achieved great things – over 9,000 manufacturing business have received specialist help, which has led to £620 million of additional turnover being generated. “We’re currently approaching a figure of 20,000 jobs safeguarded and have potentially created 7,200 new positions as the companies begin to realise their true potential.”

How it works Helping SMEs grow is no small task, particularly as no two companies are the same. However, Richard describes a typical process that MAS would employ when dealing with a new client. “A typical process is to carry out a free manufacturing review, and from that we can begin to help the company achieve its ambitions by offering advice, helping

them to identify opportunities for growth and improvement, or pointing them towards other organisations that might be able to help them. “Specifically, we focus on areas such as strategic planning, design, innovation, patents and training. We still look at what I would consider to be our ‘bread and butter’ activities, such as productivity improvement, Lean manufacturing, and workplace organisation, but our main remit is growth.

MAS has helped generate over £620m turnover “If the company wants our support as they implement their plans, we can offer matched grant funding of up to £3,000, which they can use to offset their costs for external consultants, training providers or even things like bespoke product-specific tooling if the situation arises. We don’t dictate who they use, they have a free choice of supplier.”

One of a kind When asked what makes MAS different from other advisory services, Richard was quick to answer. “That’s an easy question,” he said. “We’re unique! The core advisor team nationally is approximately 90 strong, 10 of whom operate in the Eastern region, and we’re all experienced professionals and extremely passionate about British manufacturing. There

really are no comparable organisations. “We’re seen as the leading support group for the SME manufacturing sector. Our latest figures show that we’ve achieved an enviable 98 per cent customer satisfaction rate. We also run the MAS Barometer, which is the largest manufacturing survey in England.”

Growing throughout the years With growth at the top of the agenda, it’s not surprising that MAS too has developed and adapted since its inception over a decade ago. “We have never stopped evolving as an organisation. Fairly recently, we have become heavily involved with the off-shore wind market, developing the supply-chain and ensuring manufacturers and the UK as a whole benefit from this rapidly expanding industry. It’s potentially a £50 billion annual global export market and could create an estimated 30,000 jobs by 2021. Very exciting! “UK manufacturing is slowly regaining its health and our priorities will change over time in order to ensure it continues to do so.“

Hope for the future Richard concluded by stressing that there’s a common misconception in Britain, and that’s that the British manufacturing industry has no future because of overseas competition. “That simply isn’t the case,” he says. “Export market opportunities are huge, and there are large emerging markets that want innovative, highvalue, ‘Made in Britain’ products. It is here that the bulk of our success as a manufacturing nation lies and we need to harness that opportunity.” n CONNECTED JULY 2013 | 21

WHEN I ask a customer how they utilise social media they often look at me with a mixture of fear and dread and then hesitantly say ‘well we have registered for a Twitter account’; said with the expectation of me shaking my head and uttering the words ‘and…. is that it’? Don’t look so scared guys – Twitter is a great start on the social media scene and, given chance, it might just generate business for you.

Have a think about what industries you would like to target and follow them So… let’s use Twitter as an example. The setup procedure is simple …. Firstly pick a username or handle that people will recognise (ours for example is @wiseotterSEO), that way if people search for your name or what you do, then up you pop. Then the aim of the game is to get people to ‘follow you’. This means they get to see your random 140 character Twitter ramblings on their own Twitter feed, so try to make it more interesting than feeding the dog or making a cuppa! Maybe comment on something in the news today or a local event you are attending. You never know, you might even get a ‘Re-tweet’

(retweet) when a follower forwards your tweet to their followers! Once you have this sussed you can move on to the really clever stuff. Customise your Twitter background with your logo or contact details (we can provide you with a template if required), change your profile layout to match your corporate colours, images and design even automatically send a message to each of your followers with an offer or prelude to what you do. Ok, ok, so how do I make money from all this I hear you say? Well, the thing to remember is that following on Twitter is easy but getting followers is not. Ensure that you are listed in the correct industry lists and geographic area by only following relevant companies and clearing your followers of inappropriate companies and individuals. Over time your number of followers will naturally increase

but you can influence this by Retweeting and mentioning those companies who you would like to follow you. Have a think about what industries you would like to target and follow them. Tweet relevant information and deals on products. Make your tweets count. Try not to be too pushy or ‘salesy’ - think light hearted but remember no one really wants to know when you’ve fed the dog!

Ask the expert: Interview Questions Jo Cox, Head of Recruitment at Labour Tech Recruitment, highlights some interview questions that really reveal candidate traits. According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development, interviews that are ‘off the cuff’ and badly organised are no better at predicting candidate performance than picking at random. Giving some thought to the kind of questions you should ask will help you to select the right person for your business. However, you shouldn’t be tempted to fall back on those well-worn difficult questions designed to catch out interviewees such as asking people what their biggest weakness is or where they want to be in five years’ time. Candidates have generally learned the answers to these kinds of questions and they will tell you nothing about their characteristics or potential. If you really want to get to know the candidate in front of you, try these questions instead:

People at a more senior level may well describe how they had to make staff redundant, telling you about their ability to manage difficult situations and show understanding of other people’s emotional reactions.

hen was the last time you W challenged the status quo to achieve a goal? If you’re looking for someone who follows instructions to the letter, don’t ask this question. If you value employees who will question the rules to get to the right outcomes, this will reveal each candidate’s attitude to initiative and risk taking.

What kind of people do you work with best? Candidates generally expect a question about teamworking rather than this one so you’re more likely to get a response that truly reflects their character. The answer will also tell you whether each person will be a good cultural fit within the team and organisation.

Tell us your good news stories THE British Chambers of Commerce frequently approach the accredited Chamber network for case studies to illustrate topical business issues. In the past, media requests for case studies have been specific and often short notice, which made it difficult to find just the right business to profile, so the BCC has decided to adopt a more proactive approach. Chamber members are invited to tell us their good news business stories and we will pass them on to the BCC. They are creating a library of success stories to place in the national media and to use in BCC marketing. Anvil ESI Ltd, Beacon Wealth Management Ltd, CUB (UK) and Method Creative were all quoted and acknowledged in the recent BCC campaign, ‘Business is Good for Britain’. This new initiative gives us the opportunity to put forward your success stories, like that of XLPress Digital and Litho Printers. At a time when other printing businesses are failing, XLPress is a success story with a difference. Before starting XLPress in 2011, Tony Smith worked as Production Manager for another printing firm. When that business was put into liquidation, the workforce turned to Tony to save their jobs. Tony contacted Sam Reid, who had previously worked with him for a short period and had experience in running print companies and said: “How about going into the print business with me?”

Because money was tight at the start, as premises and equipment had to be paid for, the workforce offered to work unpaid for the first two months. Since then the business has employed them all plus an additional seven staff members including a third Director. They have invested in more machinery and better premises, including new sites in Peterborough and St Ives, and last year they won the Hunts Post New Business of the Year Award.

Unfortunately, many are ignorant of the VAT implications of such activity. A quick look at activity on online forums will confirm this. The first misconception to address is that selling or buying something cross border is VAT free. This is usually not true. VAT applies to almost everything, and cross-border supplies are no exception. Having said that, membership of the EU does provide an opportunity to trade (almost) VAT-free cross-border. Skills vision for the future This month we are taking a closer look at the Skills agenda, and the role that the LEP has to play in ensuring our area has an appropriately skilled workforce both now and in the future. Leading the charge is Mark Cooper, our Skills Lead, who has been working closely with businesses via his Skills Strategy Group to create a headline strategy for the LEP based on these three points:

With a strong Skills Strategy Group already in place, Mark and the team have already started to build relationships between business, education and training providers, and the future workforce. Parking charges explored

Parking fees Ian Mackellar advises on the impact of parking charges IT’S a bit rich for Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles to castigate councils for increasing parking charges to help address a funding crisis that he caused by cutting their grant income. But it does raise serious issues about the conflict between councils’ need to balance their books and their duty to promote economic development in their areas. Unless they slash services, local authorities have limited opportunities to compensate for the reduction in their revenue support grant and other Whitehall income since Chancellor Osborne’s scorched-earth public spending review of 20 October 2010, which also ditched the (now revived) A14 upgrade. Councils in Cambridgeshire are among the more efficient in England, so they have had to look to marginal revenue to avoid cutting services. Those that actually charge for car parking – notably the two city councils and Huntingdonshire – have faced the temptation of looking to those who load up their car boots in city and town centres to ease the pressure on municipal finances – because there is little fiscal incentive for them to do otherwise. The trouble is that local prosperity and council finances are not sufficiently aligned. Local authorities are now incentivised to increase revenue from business rates by encouraging new enterprises. However, there is little encouragement to keep existing firms out of

Carey Street, even if they benefit from general improvements in local prosperity. When Huntingdonshire planned earlier this year to ‘freeze car parking charges’, what it was actually proposing was to double the minimum length of stay to two hours so that short-term shoppers paid the same £1.20 as more leisurely browsers. Yet, after that rather unsophisticated sleight of hand had been exposed as a shabby

More significant is the breadth and mix of the retail offer trick, the compromise of 80p for the first hour raised many an eyebrow from retailers and now helps HDC offset the £1.6m a year cost of providing the parking spaces. Compared to similar market towns – and certainly to Cambridge city’s £25 a day – parking in Huntingdon, St Ives and St Neots town centres remains good value (town centre parking mostly remains free around the county). But it is not the only way for councils to compensate for the sharp decline in Whitehall grant, of course. All our local authorities have made savage cuts in staff numbers, and more look likely for the future. When at Cambridgeshire Horizons, the exquisitely-clever Alex Plant, now deputy CEO

at Cambridgeshire County Council and a former Treasury civil servant, strongly pressed the previous Government to adopt ‘tax incentive financing’ (TIF), a system that would enable councils to finance infrastructure investment through levies on those who would benefit. Had it been in place when the guided busway was mooted, the scheme could have been partfinanced by employers who would benefit, for example, from easier recruitment or by retailers with enhanced markets. But it has so far been given the cold shoulder. Perhaps it is too logical for politicians to understand. But it would have been unpopular with those who advocate a two-year freeze on business rates – a move that paradoxically would further ‘disincentivise’ councils from spending scarce money on the economic development from which businesses should gain. What seems to be much more significant to retail footfall than parking charges, or even the negative impact of internet, is the breadth and mix of the retail offer. Peterborough’s experience of the arrival late last year of budget clothing store Primark is something that Huntingdon and its district council planners will be looking at very closely, with the town centre set to expand substantially over the next couple of years.

It is clear that attracting at least one significant High Street retailer – and probably two – will be key to the success of that expansion. There will also need to be a high-quality dimension to that part of the retail experience that is not available to cyber-shoppers, such as restaurants and entertainment that can be combined with shopping trips. It is probably no coincidence that, in the four months after Primark’s opening, footfall in Peterborough city centre was up on the equivalent months of 2011 and 2012 by 21.2 per cent (November) and 3.7 per cent, 7.1 per cent and 13.1 per cent in the following three months. Nor is it a coincidence that the increase in patronage coincided with huge improvements in the ‘public realm’, particularly in Cathedral Square where shoppers now feel safer and more welcome. There’s no way of knowing which was the dominant driver. Nonetheless, the improvements have encouraged the owners of the Queensgate development in the city to start to target shoppers from Oakham and Melton Mowbray, who are attracted by good rail links or £3.00 a day parking charges. n

ICT Sector - How can we help you? WE have a new, lively and willing ICT Sector committee who are ready to assist you. Chaired by David Jaggard, Director at Fluid (EM) Limited, the Sector has a committee which is represented by expert, dynamic, forward looking people who have an interest in assisting Chamber members. David said of his appointment: “I am delighted to be actively involved within the Chamber. As a Sector committee, we will provide a gateway for Chamber members to seek and obtain impartial advice and guidance – and we speak your language; cutting out the IT jargon!”

Up for the Challenge? SOCIAL Enterprise and Charities Sector members met recently at Shine’s head office to hear about the Prize Challenge on offer to voluntary and social enterprise organisations. This new fund from the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership is offering Challenge awards of up to £30,000 to successful applicants to run a project which will upskill or create jobs in the area. The deadline for entries for this first round is the end of July. More details and how to apply can be found at www.cambscf.org.uk Addressing feedback from some of the Sector members, a public sector procurement and bid writing workshop is being organised for Thursday 19 September. Further details will be announced shortly. n

PETERBOROUGH’S biggest career fair takes place on Thursday 18 July to help young people consider career options, and ensure Peterborough has the right skills needed for the future economic growth and development of the city. Sue Addison from Peterborough Skills Service said: “We expect hundreds of young people to attend to find out about the type of career they might want to pursue. It’s all about raising aspirations and ensuring we have the right skills for future business sustainability and growth. Over 70 businesses are already involved and we are keen to have more. We’re also looking to hear from students that want to attend.” The event will feature live music, a CV boot camp and Dragon’s Den style challenge. Walking the dog is a great way to enjoy the fresh air, reflect on the day and keep fit. We take a walk in the local woods, which is great for engaging the senses - seeing the flowers, hearing the woodpeckers, feeling the changing temperatures of the seasons.

Going Down Under! AUSTRALIA is the next stop on the map for the International Sector. A panel of speakers will give an introduction to Australia and highlight the business opportunities. We will also hear from UK companies who have established themselves there plus Australian banking advice from event sponsor Clydesdale. The event will provide an opportunity for business representatives to make contact with others who trade internationally or are considering it for the first time. What is the Low Carbon KEEP programme?

This European and UK Government funded scheme is designed to enable small to medium size businesses to work in partnership with UK universities and colleges.

What can it do for my company?

This programme offers both capital and revenue funding towards the eligible costs of collaborative projects between universities and companies.

How does it work?

The company and university recruit an experienced graduate to work full-time at the company on a specific project with agreed timescales. The graduate is supported by a specialist academic from the university who dedicates at least half a day a week.

What could a typical project look like?
