by Gwen Thomas or over 20 years, Avalon Visions has been a book shop/gift shop with a spiritual twist. It is truly remarkable that we have managed to survive. Just in the past 7 years we’ve out-smarted the worst economy since the great depression of the 1930’s, we weathered the flooding of Capitola in 2011, and we outlasted numerous other bookshops both large and small. Somehow, we have managed to be present and remain. My staff and I believe that it is due to the fact that we have always tried to provide great services to our local community. Although we are not a large shop, we have always been able to provide readings and chakra charts to our customers. We’ve also managed to host small events and classes even with our limited space, many of which have been and continue to be free. In December of 2013, the cigar shop next door went out of business. This presented the first opportunity in over 15 years to actually expand Avalon Visions. It was absolutely obvious that it was necessary to take that space, and to act immediately.
We will be using the additional space for our readings, and aura photography. We will also have our well-being area on that side. This will be excellent for our customers as the readings will be much more private; the aura photography will be more accessible; and depending on the day of the week, customers will be able to get Reiki healings, crystal healings,
up a wall between the 2 spaces. After tons of cleaning and remodeling, the space should be completely finished sometime next week. So, if you are in the area, come down and visit us. Check out our new and more spacious shop. —Gwen Thomas, Avalon Visions

foot and chair massages, and other various healing modalities will also be available. Another benefit of the new space is that we will have much more room for small groups. Currently, we have about 15 chairs; but after next week (if we manage to find a few more chairs), we should be able to accommodate seating for about 20—25 people. This space will also be available to rent for intimate workshops and other small groups. We held off on announcing this as we were not sure when the space would actually be ready. When we began this project, we weren’t even sure if there was a preexisting opening in the wall between the spaces. We were so very grateful to find that there was already a 6 foot opening that had long been covered between the 2 spaces. This past month we've opened

ROTA Fair - May 3rd & 4th at Monterey Fairgrounds
An Interview with the New Producer—Solarzar You are Solarzar, the new producer of the ROTA Psychic Fair. When did you take over producing the ROTA Psychic Fair? The previous owner, Julie King, approached me in 2009 to ask if I would be interested in purchasing the ROTA Fair. From 2009 to 2013 I spent time with Julie learning how she operated the fair and why things were done the way they were. I purchased the fair in May 2013 and took over operation at that time. How long has the ROTA Psychic Fair been in operation, and what does the name ‘ROTA’ mean? The ROTA Psychic Fair has been in continuous operation since 1983. The founding members of the ROTA Psychic Fair chose the name ROTA which represents the Road Of Transformation Arts and is an anagram of the word ‘Tarot’. What makes the ROTA Psychic Fair different from other like type events? The ROTA Psychic Fair is a community event for experiencing
real intuitive guidance, alternative healing therapies, great information and the wonderfully diverse spiritual community in the Monterey Peninsula. Through the years, thousands of people, from all over the country have participated in the ROTA Psychic Fair. I’m committed to the ROTA Psychic Fair maintaining a communal environment for people to sample a variety of spiritual and metaphysical experiences. Have you made changes to the ROTA Psychic Fair? Yes. The vendors were asked to make their booths experiential so that the people attending can have an experience, not just buy a product. In October people had free energy healing, free acupuncture, free vibrational readings, as well as all the paid reading and healing sessions that are available. Keeping the community focus I changed the room layout making it more accessible and open. In addition the food service was moved outside to Kuki’s Gourmet Food Truck. Not only
Mineral & Gem Show with Lectures
by Santa Cruz Mineral & Gem Society Two exciting lectures will be presented at the Santa Cruz Mineral & Gem Society’s 63rd Annual Gem & Mineral Show. Saturday, April 26, 2pm California State Park Archaeologist, Mark Hylkema, will talk about the 2011 excavation of a Woolly Mammoth in Castroville. Sunday, April 27, 2pm Mineral Expert Rick Kennedy will talk about mining Smoky and Amethyst Quartz Scepter Crystals at Hallelujah Junction, Nevada. Both will be during the show at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. In the spring of 2011, the remains of a Columbian Mammoth were archaeologically recovered from the artichoke fields of Castroville. In addition to remains of the mammoth, :cZ of other LateghPleistocene a variety g\n =ZVaZ animals were also recovered. In the hope of finding a link to Paleo Indian behavior, a research team involving many different colleges and universities was tasked to investigate. The process of learning about these animals has lead to a journey of discovery about the landscape and natural history of the Monterey Bay region at the end of the Great Ice Age. This lecture will highlight some of the insights we have gained, and will share information about our recovery of the remains of creatures that were once top of the menu for first people but have vanished from our world as if they had never been. Mark Hylkema is the Santa Cruz District Archaeologist for California State Parks, and manages cultural resources within 32 parks in an area ranging from San Francisco to the Pajaro River. Mark also works on many other projects throughout the

Is WiFi Radiation Impacting Your Health? by Shanti Rivers ew of us could imagine living our lives at this point without the convenience of WiFi. Yet have we ever really given thought to what this invisible cloud of electromagnetic radiation might be doing to our bodies? For a number of reasons, WiFi was never actually tested for its impact on the human body ! before it was introduced into our environment. And since its presence in our atmosphere is still so recent, there hasn’t been time to conduct many studies on the long-term effects it has on

However, enough research has been done that a number of researchers are concerned, believing warning should be given. Magda Havas, Professor at Trent University in Canada, states: “The scientific evidence clearly shows that microwave radiation at levels well below international guidelines with Wi-Fi routers causes cancer in laboratory animals, causes heart palpitations in sensitive adults, causes reduced sperm motility and viability, and is associated with symptoms of electrosensitivity that include ‌ cognitive dysfunction, pain, fatigue, mood disorders‌ dizziness, nausea, weakness, skin problems, and tinTired of feeling joyless, stressed & depressed? nitus.â€?

Are We There Yet??? Amend the Constitution I
by Harvey Dosik recently went to see Richard Stockton’s hilarious and penetrating show called Are we there Yet?, which is part biography, part recollection of what we the Baby Boomer generation has accomplished and part call to action to “Amend the Constitution. Boomers, we as a generation, have non-violent revolution in our blood. We fomented a sexual revolution against the sterile hypocrisy of sex being sinful. We overturned the values and morals that said ‘a woman’s place is in the home’. We brought our brothers, fathers and sons home from the stinking jungles of Viet Nam and watched with pride all that evolved from Rosa Park’s refusal to give up her seat on a
bus in Montgomery, Alabama. But, now I want to speak with the post Boomers the Generation X and Y’s and all those in between. As proud as I am of what my Boomer generation has accomplished, we are leaving you with quite a mess. My generation’s problems were regional and international like Viet Nam and the Cold War, yours are global. Two things come immediately to mind‌..Global warming (climate change; what ever it really is . . .) is global in scope; it is affecting every living thing on Earth from corals and plankton to you and me. The other is the corporate takeover of the very mechanisms of

As Richard sings in his show ... “Tea Party, Pot Party, Republican, Democrat. Let’s get together to take our country back. Citizens...let’s start a non-violent revolution. Richard Stockton will give a benefit performance of ‘Are we there Yet?’ on Sunday, April 13 at Inner Light Center. This show and your attendance will benefit ‘ Move to Amend-Santa Cruz’. Tickets: www.arewethereyetshow.com. itself. You can also attempt to avoid public areas in which WiFi is available, if you don’t need it for your laptop. But probably the most convenient thing you can do is simply get EMF protection to attach to your router at home and your laptop if you take it out of the house. There are a lot of companies selling EMF protection these days; do your research well. Make sure there’s science behind the products and credible testimonials. Check out the company’s money-back guarantee. And test the products for yourself. Even if you don’t have symptoms you’re aware of, EMF protection should give you
a sense of greater well-being and calm. And if you do have symptoms, these should noticeably lessen with protection. Only one company addresses all the problems of EMFs from electricity: EarthCalm. It’s worth checking out their Home EMF Protection System.

This show can be looked at as a call to action against the corporate takeover of our democracy. It is a protest against billionaires buying our Congresspeople. It is a push back against five men on the Supreme Court who decided that corporations are people and can spend unlimited, unlimited amounts of money in our elections. It is a call to amend the US Constitution to say loud and clear that ‘Corporations are not people and Money is not speech’. ‘Move to Amend-Santa Cruz’ is in the signature gathering phase of putting on the ballot next November a Santa Cruz County-wide measure

Santa Cruz Heirloom Seed: Preserving America through Seed Exchange
by Gina Locatelli, Agriculture Chairman, Santa Cruz County Fair ave you ever wondered how to get rare seeds like Inca Gold Corn that comes from a Peruvian village in the Amazon and can grow up to 15 feet, and contains 26% protein as compared to what you buy in the store that has 2%? Or, would you prefer Rocoto Pepper seeds that date back 7,000 years and are considered one of the hottest peppers in the world? There is an answer. Santa Cruz Heirloom Seed, stewarded by Allen Morgan, was founded in Santa Cruz, California and is a growing non-profit group devoted to preserving the biodiversity of our plant life on the earth and in the seas. Their mission is: To conserve and promote America’s culturally diverse, but endangered food crop heritage for future generations by collecting, growing, and sharing Heirloom Seeds and plants (Non GMO). They sell only Heirloom Seeds and transplants from Seed Savers Exchange of Decorah, Iowa and locally developed Heirloom Seeds and plants from its members. They encourage trading and donating at all of their events and presently have 18 free crop seeds available for event participants, which include the Inca Gold and the Rocoto Pepper. Seed Savers Exchange offers an alternative model to big agriculture through their work, encouraging participatory preservation among members, and by signing the safe seed pledge. Seed Savers Exchange knows that the future of our planet depends on a genetically diverse food supply and carries out their important work by: • Maintaining thousands of varieties of different plant types—from amaranth to watermelon—in one of the largest seed banks of its kind in North America; • Regenerating seed in isolation gardens and storing them in ideal conditions;
H
• Distributing Heirloom varieties to members and the public through the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook and the Seed Savers Exchange Catalog; • Storing varieties in back-up locations at the USDA Seed Bank in Fort Collins, CO and at Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway. These offsite deposits remain the property of Seed Saver Exchange.
at the University. Following a military career, he fell in love with and married the daughter of the owner of the Frito Lay Corporation and began a career as an executive in charge of corporate sales to large companies. After having children, Allen obtained a graphic arts degree at Mission College and then worked for Cabrillo College and the Santa Cruz County Office of Education until retirement. Allen watched his daughter benefit from the Soquel High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) as a director and witnessed her incredible growth in the agriculture community through her involvement at the Santa Cruz County Fair. He feels that sharing from his garden is his way of paying back to the community for the riches it has brought him and his daughter.

Inca Gold Corn from the Amazon, the purest corn in the world.
About Allen Morgan Allen Morgan is a lovely gentleman who is happiest when he is sharing treasures from his garden. He was born in Toronto, Canada where he lived until he was eight years old when his family moved to Rock Island, Illinois where his father worked as a steel executive. After many family moves to follow the emerging steel industry, Allen settled down to attend the University of Iowa. He couldn’t afford to buy regular meals and came to enjoy the community meals offered by the Amish. The Amish community kitchen is where Allen acquired his appreciation of the farming environment—this appreciation would have a lasting impression on his life. In order to become an American citizen, Allen enrolled in the ROTC program
Allen enjoys selling his Heirloom Organic Vegetable Starters and Seed Saver Exchange seeds at the Native Revival Nursery, his retail outlet, located at 2600 Mar Vista Drive in Aptos. He is there on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm through July 10, 2014. Come and swap!

Santa Cruz ocean water collection for Fukushima radiation levels testing by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute-- Fukushima Response SC As part of a series of local events connected to the Santa Cruz Earth Day Celebration in San Lorenzo Park-On Sunday, April 6, at 10am near the 36th Avenue stairs: Fukushima Response Santa Cruz will collect ocean water samples with the help of local surfers. The public is welcome to participate and learn more about what are “safe” radiation levels and how increased radiation, background radiation and in our water and food, effects our health and our genome. The water will be tested by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute for Fukushima radiation. SEE: “How Radioactive Is Our Ocean?” at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute website:
Fukushima Response website: www.fukushimaresponse.org/Home. html This collection is timed to provide benchmark radiation levels of different isotopes so they may be compared to the Fukushima radiation plume levels that is expected to arrive
along the West Coast later this year and into next year. This is part of a publicly funded ocean water testing program which is being done all along the West Coast from Alaska, Canada, Washington, Oregon to Southern California. Federal agencies are not doing any testing as EPA safe isotope exposure levels have been increased by hundreds of times in 2013. The $500 cost for this test was from an anonymous resident of Santa Cruz County. More collections for testing will occur periodically this year depending on availability of funds. CHIROPRACTIC CORNER:
TRIED AND TRUES
P
by Sylvia Skefich eople frequently take advantage of the best of technology, and of modern living. However, sometimes people complain that they don’t want to take “supplements” to make them function or feel better. It seems that one would want to avail themselves of the best that life brings, especially when it comes to products that are natural and safe. Here is a short list of tried and true products to help you get through life more smoothly. INTRAMAX is sold as a multi-vitamin and mineral. However it works very well for the people with a frazzled nervous system, due the special array of micronized minerals. This is to help people who are “keyed up, yet exhausted” all the time. (Liquid. Take ½ oz, 2Xper day.) FORMULA 303 is a homeopathic formulation made with passion flower and valerian. It works wonders for people who are really “stressing,” and feel that something is terribly wrong. (Lozenge. Melt one in mouth every hour or no less than 3X per day.) ADAPTACRINE is a combination of adaptagenic herb concentrates. Adaptagens help to modulate the cortisol stress response. The adaptagens also help with feelings of wellbeing. Additionally they help to reconnect the “hypothalamic-pituitary axis,” meaning they help to reconnect the feedback loops that should exist between the hormonal and the nervous system. Use Adaptacrine as maintenance to combat the effects of long term high or low grade stress on
FOOD
MEDICINE: PLANT-BASED NUTRITION
by Dr. Connie Sanchez, N.D. “Let food by thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food”, stated the Father of Western Medicine, Hippocrates, back in 460-377 B.C. ever in the history of humankind has this statement been so important as it is today. Heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and autoimmune disease seem to be increasing with every decade with no end in sight. Yes, true, there are pharmaceuticals that may manage these conditions, but no real cure seems to be found. We seem to always be looking for health in all the wrong places. Health is not found in a pill, a potion, or a remedy. Health is created by living healthfully, which includes choosing a healthpromoting diet. The food choices we make matter more today than it ever has. Just travel down your grocery store aisles and all you see are rows and rows of packaged, processed, “food-like” substances that people may confuse as food. Salt, sugar, processed grains, oils, synthetic vitamins, and artificial ingredients in various combinations tend to make up the majority of items that we, as Americans, choose to regularly consume. As a result, we are sicker than ever. These “foods” may keep us alive and we survive because we are consuming calories, but they do not allow us to thrive! In order to really thrive we need to consume foods that are nutrient dense and calorie dilute. Plant foods are high in nutrients and low in calories. Whole, unrefined plant foods such as vegetables, fruits, beans and legumes, intact whole grains, and small amounts of raw nuts and seeds are our best choices because they provide our body with all the nutrients needed for optimal health (with one exception, vitamin B12). Nevertheless, vitamin B12 can easily be gotten by taking a B12 supplement. Unrefined plant foods provide us with fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and

your body or for stress recovery. (Capsules. Take 6 per day.) FLEX CONNECT is a glucosamine product that also has anti-inflammatory ingredients in it like turmeric, ginger, and enzymes. Flex Connect is made locally, and is great for joint support, and can help with joint pain. Glucosamine is proven to improve cartilage health if taken regularly over time. (Capsules. Take 3 per day.) LIVAPLEX is the go-to liver cleanse product. It works in three ways, thinning the bile for a flushing, increasing the tubules’ motility, and increasing the natural chemical disassembly potential in the liver. It is good to first do one month of flushing and opening the channels of elimination using AF Betafood (6 day), then one month of Livaplex (4-6 day). This method makes sure that the toxins that get stirred up actually can get out. But one can also take a gradually increasing dose of Livaplex, starting gently with 1 per day for three days, then 2 per day for three days, and so on until 6 per day, using out one bottle’s worth to complete a cleanse. Spring is liver cleanse time, too! NATURAL CALM is a magnesium product. It helps with sleep, stress relief, muscle cramps, heart health, nervous system health, constipation and more. (Powder. 1 tsp-1TBS in hot water for a drink.) Sylvia Skefich is a Doctor of Chiropractic who enjoys using herbs and supplements to attain the best potential of health for her interested patients. (She always recommends seeking medical care for unusual or persistent symptoms.) Her reception is open for walk-in supplement sales (check hours). She often sells supplements at less than retail price (as with “Intramax”). She is located at 920 41st Ave., Suite G, Santa Cruz, CA. (831) 475-1995, www.Vital-You.com.
phytonutrients, all essential for optimal health and disease prevention. When our diet is rich in animal products (meat, eggs and dairy) and/or refined carbohydrates (sugar and flour) we, by default, end up eating way too much fat, sugar, and salt and not enough fiber, antioxidants and phytonutrients. Both animal and refined foods tend to lack important nutrients such as fiber, antioxidants and phytonutrients, which are necessary to keep us healthy and disease-free. By making better food choices, we can turn the health of our nation around. We have it within our power to reverse diabetes and heart disease, prevent cancers and banish autoimmune disease. It is empowering when we understand that with every bite we take we either create health or disease. We get to make the choice! For optimal health choose whole, unrefined, minimally processed plant-based foods. Because, food really is thy medicine. Dr. Sanchez (“the Vegan Doctor”) will be beginning a series of plant-based nutrition classes in May/June 2014. For more information on a plant-based diet, upcoming classes, or to schedule a free 15-min consultation with Dr. Sanchez, please contact her at (831) 477-1377. Dr. Sanchez is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor practicing at the Santa Cruz Naturopathic Medical Center. She received her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR in 2001 and has been practicing for over 13 years. She specializes in Naturopathic Endocrinology (i.e., thyroid, diabetes, and hormones), Women’s and Men’s medicine, Autoimmunity, Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer. by David L. Biles, D.D.S., M.A. hen I worked in medicine as an exercise physiologist and cardiopulmonary technologist for Northridge Hospital in the late 70’s, I had the opportunity of observing new medical school graduates train as family practice residents in the intensive care unit. Thus, I embarked on my own self-styled “residency” working as an associate dentist in four other ofÀces in the Los Angeles basin over a period of three years before setting out on my own in Santa Cruz. That was a little over 25 years ago. I learned a lot working for those other dentists. And I learned much from the patients I encountered. Each practice was unique, as each dentist had his own philosophy of care and business, attracting like-minded patients. Ultimately, I ended up working in Lomita, Bellflower, Hawthorne, and Long Beach. In one practice, I worked for two of the Ànest dentists I have known, brothers Bob and Larry Rifkin. The doctors Rifkin had trained under some of the giants in dentistry, guided by their uncle, Dr. Milton Kodosch, himself a pioneer in creating viable dental insurance plans. Bob and Larry practiced in Hawthorne and Beverly Hills. They also happened to be the dentists for the Los Angeles Lakers, and their work was pure art, a joy to observe, a standard for the possible. They, perhaps more than anyone, convinced me that beautiful dental work was possible given the best technical support possible. They helped me deÀne my standards, and for that I am forever grateful. I also appreciated the opportunity to Àll in for them as the Laker dentist on a couple of occasions. When I Ànally left Los Angeles to practice in Santa Cruz, I had three years of seasoning under my belt and thought I was prepared for anything and everything. After all, that was what my “residency” was for, to prepare me for more of the unknown. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. I had never encountered patients who questioned the use of Áuoride or x-rays or amalgam Àllings or root canals during those early days. I was rudely awakened to issues I never even knew existed. I was in Santa Cruz. Over the years, I came to better understand the concerns of some of my patients—not all, of course, but some. Eventually, after years of classes and experiences with some of my more radically inclined patients, I came to embrace a different philosophy of care that I practice today. I don’t
place amalgams laden with mercury, and in fact remove them, if requested by my patients. I don’t have Áuoride in the ofÀce and have actively spoken against the hazards of Áuoridating the community water supply. I don’t perform root canals and do my very best to prevent the need by practicing truly gentle dentistry with high illumination and magniÀcation. I do, however, refer patients out for root canals, if that is, indeed, what they wish after evaluating both sides of the root canal issue. I reason that my patients must live with the consequences of their choices. My job is to educate and present all of the information I have to my patients so that they can make informed decisions. They live with their body; I sleep well at night. Very simple. One issue that I do continue to have difÀculty with, however, is that of refusing to have x-rays taken, another common “Santa Cruz” dental request. I could hardly accept this argument 25 years ago when most of the dentists took x-rays as we did back then. I have an even harder time today. Twenty-Àve years ago it was hard to accept because having a full mouth series of dental x-rays taken was likened to an hour of exposure in the sunlight. With many aging “Áower children” of the 60’s in my practice, I Àgured an hour of sun worship couldn’t be too bad or infrequent an experience. Once a year for x-rays? What was the big deal? Nowadays with the advent of digital x-ray systems, the radiation to our patients has been reduced another 90%. Yet, I still continue to have patients resist periodic x-ray examinations. At some point, with each patient who habitually refuses x-rays, I am left with the unpleasant responsibility of dismissing them from my practice. Why? Because I must operate within the standard of care at the permission of the state, which issues my license to practice dentistry. Practicing to the standard of care means not supervising the neglect of my patients, and patients cannot consent to malpractice. So, at some point in time, I must approach those who continually refuse periodic x-rays with dismissal from my practice as the consequence. Besides… and most importantly, there is nothing
more discouraging than to discover signiÀcant dental decay within a tooth that has gone undetected for a period of time even with routine visual exams and dental hygiene visits. X-rays serve many purposes and one of those is the early detection of dental decay before it spreads too deeply. Xrays are part of the diagnostic tools a dentist must have to fully serve his/her patients. Just this past week, I struggled to remove all of the decay for a patient in a permanent molar without exposing the nerve in the process. I had assented to allow this patient to defer x-rays because she had apparently good dental hygiene, and she routinely saw my dental hygienist. By the time she Ànally consented to the x-ray examination, signiÀcant decay was present in one of her molars. Now we must wait to see if my treatment will therapeutically heal her lesion, preventing the need for root canal therapy or an extraction. “Bite-wing” x-rays show the existence and progress of decay occurring between teeth, generally as a result from not Áossing properly or often enough. Decay, like many phenomenons follows the path of least resistance. Once decay breaks through the hard enamel layer and reaches the underlying softer dentin layer, the decay “explodes” in all directions moving rapidly towards the nerve. To my way of thinking, it is far more beneÀcial to expose a small portion of your body (teeth) to digital diagnostic x-rays once every 12-18 months to prevent the possibility of losing a tooth or having a root canal performed. And again, with digital xrays, the level of radiation exposure has been reduced another 90% over the faster Àlm alternatives of the last 20 years. The consequences of losing a tooth or carrying a dead one around in your head for the remainder of your life certainly outweighs the risk of minimal exposure to the radiation. Doesn’t it? Maybe it’s time to reevaluate your resistance to periodic digital x-rays. Your tooth or your life. THE KEYS TO LIVING IN A STATE OF WELL BEING
I
by Elley Coren, MA, LFMT have spent most of my adult life striving to live in a state of Well Being. What does that mean? My vision of that is multi-faceted. It means being physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually healthy. Making choices that support our health in all these areas is the key. Each affects the other. What are the keys to remaining in balance in each of these areas of our lives? Our body must be tended to with love and care just as we would a beautiful garden. We must feed it the proper nutrients, hydrate it with plenty of water, breathe fully and regularly in order to oxygenate our cells, and rest it by getting the adequate amount of sleep. In order to allow our minds and bodies to receive the rest and silence that will be life changing, I suggest meditation. It has been scientifically proven that meditating can affect our blood pressure, pulse, mental clarity and reduce stress. Stress is the number one cause for a lack of well being on all levels. One must ask themselves when they are not properly tending to the body, “What is the reason I am CHOOSING to neglect, abuse, or ignore the needs of my body?” Often times the answer to this question has to do with a past emotional pain that we have not dealt with or a negative belief about ourselves. We are extremely impressionable as children. We form beliefs that can stay with us throughout our lives. If we are criticized, berated, or demeaned, we might grow up believing we are
not good enough, inadequate or unintelligent. If we are physically abused and did what we were told out of fear, we could either have the behavior of “people pleasing” or the opposite, be an angry abusive person ourselves. In order to live a life of balance and well being, we must be willing to explore the effects our upbringing has had on our behaviors, our coping mechanisms and our negative self talk. Becoming aware of the aspects about ourselves that do not serve us, gathering the insights as to how we got them, feeling and then healing that pain, can set us free. WHAT IS THAI YOGA MASSAGE? by Richard Grode Ph.D and Ploy Khunchum Grode hai Massage, or Nuad Boraen, or Traditional Thai Massage, or Thai Yoga Massage, is a unique and powerful healing art that has been an integral part of traditional Thai medicine for thousands of years. In a unique way, Thai massage blends elements of deep tissue, acupressure, Yoga, reflexology, physiotherapy, meditation, energy healing, and Ayurveda. Traditional Thai Massage has its roots in the Indian systems of Yoga and Ayurveda. Around 2000 years ago, Thai Massage was brought from India to Thailand along with Buddhism. Since then, it has been practiced, developed and handed down through the generations. It was never seen as just massage but as a spiritual practice, and until fairly recently, mostly practiced in wats, the Thai Buddhist temples. Its primary aim is to restore and balance the body’s energy system which comprises of a multitude of energy lines that run through the body. Thai Yoga Massage therapists work on 10 main meridians to ensure optimum health and wellbeing. These meridians are called Sip Sen in Thai, or the ten Sen. Due to physical or emotional trauma, bad posture, injuries or limiting belief systems, this energy can get trapped or blocked, causing physical and emotional dis-ease. Thai Yoga Massage with its amazing multitude of techniques and adjustments can release these blockages and bring the body back to its natural equilibrium where perfect balance and wellbeing are present. The benefits of Thai Yoga Massage are countless. By freeing the flow of vital energy in the body, Thai Massage can improve posture,
T
breathing, flexibility, digestion and circulation. Muscles are stretched, inner organs toned and emotional and nervous tension is reduced. Often a deep sense of peace can be experienced during and after a treatment. Although the main emphasis in the practice of Thai Yoga Massage is usually on health prevention (as all disease manifests first on the energy level and can be treated there before it becomes physical), it can also be of great therapeutic benefit for a range of specific problems and conditions, such as headaches, back pain, digestive disorders, shoulder and neck tension, joint pain, menstruation problems, insomnia and other stress related conditions. Thai Yoga Massage is done on a firm futon or mat on the floor with the patient dressed in light clothes. Typically a session lasts between 1 ½—2 hours, but can also be considerably longer if needed. The practitioner uses his or her thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet to apply a combination of acupressure, gentle rocking and twisting, joint and spine mobilizations and assisted yoga stretches. With the therapist using body weight instead of strength and a steady and meditative rhythm, Thai Yoga Massage looks and feels like a graceful dance between giver and receiver. We at Traditional Thai Massage of Santa Cruz are committed to upholding and carrying on this ancient healing art. Please visit us at www.waythai.com. Our BOdy Needs sPriNg CleANiNg TOO!
by Viviana Albarracin pring is here! This time of year is usually accompanied by cleaning… cleaning out the clutter and dust that have accumulated throughout the winter. This is also the time of year to cleanse our bodies, to help rid our bodies of the toxins that have accumulated when we ate all that rich and complicated food over the holidays and into the new year. It all felt so good at the time, but now it feels like a heavy load. Once you begin to cleanse your body from the inside out, you will start to experience some of the amazing benefits that cleansing offers on your physical as well as mental state. You may begin to immediately notice that you have more energy, better digestion, improved sleep quality, clearer skin, and improved mental awareness. You’ll feel lighter in your body and in your entire being. There are many great superfoods with detoxifying properties, but here are my top 10 picks. 1. Lemon 2. Dandelion 3. Celery 4. Beets 5. Asparagus 6. Cabbage 7. Fennel 8. Leeks 9. Ginger 10. Cranberries You can add these whole foods in juices, smoothies or salads. Here is a healthy juicing recipe that will aid in nourishing and ridding your body of toxins.
ULTIMATE GREEN JUICE The base is celery, which is loaded with potassium, folic acid, magnesium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and essential amino acids. On top of all that, it’s one of the most alkalinizing things you can put in your body. To that, I add kale, green apple, parsley, lime, lemon and ginger, creating an extremely potent, detoxifying cocktail. INGREDIENTS: 1 bunch celery, 4-5 kale leaves, 1 green apple, 1 handful of parsley, 1 lime, 1 lemon, 1 inch of fresh ginger Another wonderful way to start your cleanse is to pamper yourself with a get-away retreat. Here, you are supported in a beautiful, relaxing environment. Let the experts make your meals, learn how to make delicious, uberhealthy foods, and be pampered with those special extras, like yoga, hiking, and swimming, that support your cleanse. Then, you can go home feeling rejuvenated, empowered, and ready to make some lasting changes. The effects of a cleanse go far beyond being just a physical cleanse or a good way to lose excess weight; it is a powerful way to make changes on every level of your being. When you make a change in your physical body you will see that change joyfully expressed in your mental, emotional, and spiritual life too. Happy Spring Cleaning! eighth most powerful special interest on Capitol Hill, spending $18 million on lobbying in 2013 [6]. The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) [7] co-runs the medical licensure exam and is the umbrella organization for the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) [8]. In turn, ACCME accredits organizations that provide Continuing Medical Education (CME), which is mandatory for all licensed doctors. The FSMB has a history of discrimination [9] against integrative medicine. Allegedly a private organization, it is hard to gather much information about, but it also seems to be led by the AMA, and seems especially determined to eliminate integrative doctors by one means or another. We will be writing more about the Federation in the future. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) [10] consists of specialty boards of medicine (e.g., the American Board of Allergy and Immunology) and offers board certification. The ABMS was formed by a conference [11] that included the FSMB and the AMA, and considers both organizations to be Associate Members [12] . Technically, board certification is not mandatory. After all, doctors are required to remain abreast of the latest medical developments in other ways, such as through mandatory CME classes. But since the FSMB controls CME accreditation, doctors are forced to play the AMA/FSMB/ABMS game, one way or another. Moreover, the best jobs in medicine are typically reserved
for those who are “fellows” of a given board. The higher rungs of medicine are run very much like a classic Medieval guild: knowing the right people and not displeasing them will make or break your career, regardless of your talent. The three organizations described above work so closely together that they seem to us to be virtually one entity led by the AMA. The AMA and FSMB openly collaborate [14] on projects and initiatives, while the FSMB is officially affiliated with [15] ABMS. Until now, doctors who are board-certified by the AMBS must be recertified every ten years [16]. That gives the organization considerable control over doctors, though the control is loose. But, starting this year, the AMBS is requiring that doctors go through “mini” recertification every two to five years. This would make it much easier to keep tabs on and rein in anyone daring to dissent from standard orthodoxy. Fortunately, this has been met by opposition. In April 2013, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), not an integrative but an independent and courageous group unaffiliated with the AMA, sued the AMBS [17] for imposing “enormous ‘recertification’ burdens” that are “not justified by any significant improvements in patient care.” The lawsuit goes on to call the recertification process a “money making scheme:” [AMBS’s recertification] brings in m any t ens of m illions of dol lars [13]

by ANH-USA he basic idea is to preserve the conventional medicine monopoly by all means possible, including the use of state medical boards and physician credentialing groups. There’s a close-knit confederacy of three powerful conventional medical organizations in the United States. These groups work closely together and are allied with both federal and state government. One of their prime objectives appears to be to eliminate competition from natural health practitioners, especially integrative MDs and DOs, whom they seem to regard as traitors. Decades ago, chiropractors sued the American Medical Association [1] for similar assaults which they believed represented an illegal restraint of trade. The case went to the Supreme Court, which sided with the chiropractors. The present assault on integrative doctors seems to us to be just more of the same, motivated by the same crass business reasons—though it’s even worse this time. If this sounds like a conspiracy theory, it’s not. Let’s look more closely at the AMA and its allies. The American Medical Association (AMA) [2] is the most powerful of the three groups we’ll discuss. It influences Medicare prices [3], has recommended that drug companies keep mercury in vaccines [4], and makes about $218.8 million a year [5] on its government-granted CPT medical code monopoly. It’s also the

by Dr. Becker any in the traditional veterinary community rely heavily on the use of synthetic glucocorticoid drugs like prednisone and dexamethasone. These medications, while extremely effective at treating a wide range of uncomfortable symptoms, don’t address the underlying condition. Equally dangerous is the fact that these drugs come with a long list of side effects, some of which are much worse than the problem they are prescribed to treat. Pets are commonly given steroids to treat the symptoms of an inflammatory condition almost anywhere in the body. They are also prescribed for autoimmune disorders, certain types of cancers, and in cases of trauma or shock. Common side effects of glucocorticoid drugs include increased hunger and thirst, increased urination, lethargy, restlessness, mental confusion, GI problems including ulcers, hair loss, weight gain, a potbelly, Cushing’s disease, blood clots, diabetes, pancreatitis, and secondary infections. Many pet owners and veterinarians are willing to overlook mild side effects simply because steroids seem to provide a cost-effective quick fix for a problem that may have been unresponsive to
other treatment approaches. Long term or excessive use of these drugs almost guarantees that an animal will develop significant organ disease or dysfunction. Veterinary practices that routinely use glucocorticoids have a higher than average number of pet patients with diabetes, liver disease, pancreatitis, drug-resistant infections, and other serious diseases. If your pet has a health challenge, the goal should be to identify and treat the root cause while relieving symptoms with non-toxic therapies. Before you agree to steroid therapy for your pet, we recommend you talk to your veterinarian about how he or she plans to identify and treat the underlying condition, not just the symptoms, as well as potential non-toxic alternatives to the use of glucocorticoid drugs. Cognitive Dysfunction: Does Your Cat Prowl the House at Night and Vocalize? This May Be Why. Four common behaviors reported by owners of older cats include excessive nighttime vocalization, staring off into space, eliminating outside the litter box, and loss of desire to interact with human family members. Older kitties, like older dogs, can develop cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS). And while some signs of mental decline can be the result of
normal aging, the degree and nature of the decline gives clues as to whether a cat has CDS or is simply experiencing the occasional “senior moment.” The acronym D.I.S.H. is sometimes used to evaluate cognitive dysfunction in pets. “D” is a measure of the level of disorientation the cat is experiencing. “I” measures a reduction in social interaction between the cat and human family members. “S” signals changes in sleep-wake patterns. And “H” is for loss of house training. Feline CDS is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning all possible non brainrelated physical reasons for changes in behavior have been ruled out. This is an important step, since many conditions of older pets have symptoms that mimic signs of cognitive decline. There are many things pet owners can do to help postpone CDS or alleviate its symptoms in cats with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of cognitive decline. These include feeding a species-appropriate diet, providing beneficial supplements, and offering plenty of exercise opportunities and environmental enrichment. There are also things you can do around your home to help mitigate both your cat’s stress and your own. http://healthypets.mercola.com Printed with permission.

Page 14 in revenue to ABMS and the 24 allied corporations. Though ostensibly non-profit, these corporations then pay prodigious salaries to their executives, often in excess of $700,000 per year. But their recertification demands take physicians away from their patients, and result in hospitals denying patients access to their physicians. As noted above, we do not think this new proposal is simply a “money making scheme.” Nor, just an intraprofessional power play. We believe it is designed to stamp out doctors who dare to explore non-conventional treatments that go outside the bounds of FDA-approved drugs and surgery, no matter how commonsensical (such as changing one’s diet) they are. In response to criticism, the AMBS has responded that certification is purely voluntary, and that doctors not willing to be recertified more often can simply opt out. We have already explained why this is disingenuous. In addition, on their Certification Matters website [18], AMBS itself implies that uncertified doctors are somehow less qualified and may not provide adequate care. Being licensed does not indicate whether a doctor is qualified to practice in a specific medical specialty, such as family medicine, surgery or dermatology. One of the best ways to know if your doctor has the qualifications to provide care in a specialty is to find out if he or she is Board Certified. On the same website, AMBS has a search tool [19]to verify if your doctor is certified. Not surprisingly, the ABMS refuses to work with integrative doctors [20] , and only includes ABMS-certified doctors in their database—not doctors qualified by other boards. Integrative practitioners do have some certification boards either in existence or in creation. But none of these
boards will ever be recognized by the AMA-allied medical establishment and its allies and overlords in government any more than integrative doctors themselves will be recognized. The whole point of integrative medicine is to take the best aspects of both conventional and complementary/ alternative medicine and integrate them into a sound healthcare approach. We work for a healthcare system that embraces both modalities with equality and respect. All of medicine has a common foe in greedy, monopolistic organizations that seem to us to have their own best interests in view—not those of physicians, and certainly not those of patients. HOW TO REALLY CHANGE, PART TWO

by Karin Leonard ast month we explored how to create sustainable change, and turn self-criticism into support. Today, we’ll further explore the nature of lasting transformation. Sudden Jumps and Steady Growth Putting the hype of unrealistic expectations aside, we are able to take evolutionary leaps in our mental, emotional and spiritual development. 7KHUH LV WKH JUHDW PDJLF RI D VXGGHQ à DVK RI insight, or the far-reaching effects of inner shifts deep in the unconscious mind. However, the key to make such profound change work, is the steady growth and support that follows. Internal transformation ripples through the fabric of who we are, and therefore, affects all aspects of life. To sustain development, set up structures of support. Systems of Support The foundation that nurtures successful change is self-acceptance. Success does not come about by will power alone. Pushing yourself too hard, or a self-punishing attitude, only goes so far. What works is creating your best life because you care about yourself. Nonetheless, making positive change last does require attention. We are creatures of habit, and without daily focus and helpful systems, even the most profound inner shift loses momentum. For example, if work has been consuming your life, and you realize that at the end of your life you want to remember more WKDQ VWUHVV DW WKH RIÀFH WKDW UHDOL]DWLRQ alone is not enough to alter your lifestyle. Next, design a sustainable rhythm, balancing work with other important aspects of your life, and then gradually implementing your plan.

Having had the privilege to witness countless clients transform themselves and their lives, in a relatively short period of time, I am in awe of human nature, and what we are capable of accomplishing—once we decide to do so, and believe that we can. And it is my personal mission (and sincerest pleasure) to be in service of this marvelous process of human evolution. Karin H. has been a favorite Quartz locality for as long as most of us have been alive. From scrambling up the mountain, collecting float and hiding from people blasting in the mid 1980’s to now being an integral part in the most recent mining projects, Rick offers perspectives from the casual rockhound to the professional miner and dealer. The lecture will begin with a brief history of the locality and what makes the Quartz from there so interesting and collectable. The rest of the lecture will be about recent workings there, many pictures of crystals found and what the future holds. Rick will also bring several examples from his own personal collection.

Come to the Dance
by Ted Mancuso igong is like a community dance. If only three people show up, it is still a community dance. But as the music plays, revs up, more locals stroll in and join the fun. Eventually, every member of the community is involved, all joining the celebration and acting as a happy crowd. As in this scene, you may find yourself starting with only a few participants. Standing, you think about your breathing, structure and intent; tinkering really. It might already seem overwhelming but, as you will experience with time, once you get those first three items working together, the dance will naturally and effortlessly entice more involvement. One of the core concepts of Qigong is this slow roping in of all pertinent concerns of the exercise. In many types of physical practice the technical is first learned, then sequentially perfected. But the internal is generally treated as an indefinable mystical-plus symbol which some people possess while others don’t. However, this extra-factor, if we are alert to changes in people’s attitudes, is evidently of great import; otherwise, we would not be seeing all these “Inner Game” books, or “Zen of…” features. People are beginning to see that balancing the inner and the outer is a key factor in real health. I am convinced that while the

by Janet Leonard e have so many cool events that are happening in Santa Cruz County that people travel for miles to attend. I suggest getting out and taking advantage of what we live so close to! Santa Cruz Dance Week is Thu. Apr. 24th—Sat. May 3rd and is part of National Dance Week founded in 1981 to increase awareness of dance and its contributions to our national culture. This is the largest celebration of dance in Santa Cruz on Thu. Apr. 24th from 5:15-9:30pm, hundreds of dancers and thousands of observers converge for a fantastic night of dance on the streets of downtown. To find out the weeks events go to http://www.scdanceweek.com/. A venue that is really heating up is The Pocket. They’ve had such famous musicians as: Tony Lindsay, worldrenowned singer of Santana; Chris Cain, blues vocalist and guitar virtuoso; and singer Maria Muldaur best known for “Midnight at the Oasis”. It’s an intimate place, you feel like you have a VIP ticket front and center to see these great artists and touring bands. Not to be missed,

literate, provocative and with an urbanely romantic folk-pop style. Coasters: Fri. Apr. 25th, The Billy Martini Show, rock and roll 70’s show. Sat. May 10th, The Devil Himself, the high energy alternative metal 4-piece, back after a year with Jason Goldberg back pounding the pagan skins and a big change of tempo for Jared Neilson from “not an Airplane” who takes over as bass player, also Dimidium, a melodic metal band. Concerts in Retro: Here is my review of a recent show. Remember this is only my opinion. At The Catalyst: Mr. Michael McDonald, formerly of the Doobie Brothers, performed with his eyes closed most of the time, but I did get a good look at those bright, piercing baby blues once. I was in the second row most of the 1 1/2 hour show. A concert customized for his audience: no opening act, early (music started at 8:15pm), not too long and all the big hits including “Takin’ it to the Streets”, “What a Fool Believes” and “Minute By Minute”. the historical and political stage are set pretty well. While not offering any novel perspectives, this follows the traditions, with cheesy elements like gaping holes in the spirit hands of the ascended Jesus, and the dreaded violence and gore of crucifixion. Yet if you look beneath the surface, the truly powerful and timeless messages of Christ shine through the religious dogma. You may find it inspiring compassion and the presence of spirit within, as well as the possibility of spiritual enlightenment. Very different tone from the wrathful God of the Old Testament depicted in Noah (2 hrs 18 min).

Definitely some embellishments and digital twists to this mythic tale; some of them work. The big screen is a powerful teacher, and with that comes great responsibility. Will Noah add to the alarming number of people who mistake the symbolic storytelling for historical fact, ignoring science, in a world now increasingly threatened by environmental destruction and climate change? It could. Perhaps Neil Degrasse Tyson’s fabulous remake of the original Cosmos television series should be required viewing, the antidote to this apparent loss of reason? Still, risks aside, Russell Crowe makes a stately and believable Noah, and fun to see Emma Watson (Harry Potter’s Hermione) all grown up, pretty and showing acting chops away from Hogwarts. With Saoirse Ronan, Ralph Fiennes, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Jeff Goldblum Entertainment: 3.5 Message: 2.5 f you are a fan of other Wes Anderson movies, such as Moonrise Kingdom or The Royal Tenenbaums, don’t miss this one. Certainly hilarious at times, if not overly consistent with his other films – lots of quirky, zany, frenetic slapstick, often brilliant and delightful. Here the backdrop consists of historical events and related challenges of the time between World Wars in Europe, and a multihued stay at a fine old relic, full of tradition and color. The content is just a framework for the artistic expression and humanistic way of understanding the world at that time. Lead character Ralph Fiennes’ charming and richly modulated in-character performance carries the multilayered plot, including themes of racism and conflicts brewing. Moments of stylized violence (reminiscent of Tarantino) seem out of place – not our taste for entertainment or humor. While overall reasonably enjoyable, we wondered what might be the point. Not unlike eating a bagful of candy, fast fun followed by hours of nutritional deprivation … lacking in substance, sure, but the inevitable crash caused us to question why critics seem to love this film. As art, the sweetness comes through, but the value evaporated like a melting bon-bon on a hot summer day (1 hr 30 min).

by Adora Deva ur sense of smell is one of our oldest imprinting senses and is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the limbic system—where our emotions, behavior, long-term memory, and smell are processed. When we breathe an essential oil fragrance, it stimulates nerves in the nose, which send impulses to the limbic system which then sends positive therapeutic memory-emotion responses to the aroma into rest of the brain and nervous system. For anxiety, depression, fatigue, stress, and more, essential oils have long been appreciated for their uplifting, calming ‘effects on emotional wellness. Additionally, by applying them topically to targeted areas of the body, their therapeutic constituents reestablish balance. Many recipients report feeling the soothing of muscle tension or experience the cleansing effect of the oils as they stimulate toxin elimination from the body. Essential oils have often been called humanity’s first medicine. They are a form of plant medicine using the aromatic compounds extracted from plants. The Ancient Egyptians used oils for treating diseases, skin and hair care, even embalming. They also used them in religious rituals and ceremonies such as cleansing bad thoughts from the mind—today this would be called releasing emotional trauma. Therapeutic grade essential oils contain molecules that appear to be accepted by receptor sites on every cell, which causes quick assimilation, promoting muscle relaxation, tissue regeneration and inflammation reduction. We all carry immune-system depleting viruses and bacteria. Some essential oils can be used for their anti-bacterial, anti-viral, antifungal and anti-parasitic benefits. THERAPEUTIC ESSENTIAL OILS sential oils is by giving a ‘Raindrop Technique’ session using a sequence of nine highly immuneenhancing essential oils. They are dropped like rain onto the spinal meridians and the bottom of the feet. Light massage follows, ending with a warm towel applied over the spine to help the oils penetrate. The healing components of these essential oils are directly absorbed into the skin, nerves, connective tissue and blood stream bringing about balance, harmony and increased energy flow to the entire body. Wonderfully soothing, the Raindrop Technique can work its benefits in the body and nervous system for days, weeks or even months. Aromatherapy Polarity Chakra Massage combines certain essential oils for activating and balancing the energy centers or chakras of the body. This is combined with a relaxing polarity balance massage. Each Chakra has a physical and emotional element that goes along with it—using Polarity, an energy practice that uses the elemental energies of the Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Either to help balance the body. This wonderfully soothing, nurturing and relaxing massage takes you into a deep sense of bliss that provides balance that lasts for days. While the Raindrop will focus more on the Nervous System, this technique is really great for the emotional body. The Music of the Spheres:
Astrological Insights by Susan Heinz Astrology
for A pril 2014 he dawn stretches out rosy on the Eastern ridge. Venus, a bright lantern, calls us to wakefulness. And wakefulness we need to successfully navigate the tensions of this month. April becomes the ground for positive or destructive forward movement. In the early evening, to the West, Orion stretches himself out on the horizon and looks up to the heavens. Sirius, the Dog Star, jewels the sky; a diamond flashing multiple colors while the Dog constellation sits up, attending to the intensity of activity the year of the Horse leaves in the wake of its speed. We feel the pressure of too much to do, as retrograde Mars reverses its direction, as well as intensifying the Warrior aspects within humanity! It instructs us to slow down to find equilibrium. Balance and diplomacy is now the Libran call, (With Mars in Libra). As the Sun illuminates Aries, impulsiveness, reactions, and bold movements amp up our march into April. Astrologers watch April as the tipping point of destiny, when the planets form a grand cardinal cross and nail us to tensional opposition, a breaking or break through point. Two eclipses, and the 5th exact Uranus Pluto alignment, churn the cross of 4 planets, Jupiter and Mars included, in the heavens. This mirrors the crucial decisions that will need to be made with diplomatic consciousness. Gather your composure, seek stillness to renew yourself, exercise to feed your blood with oxygen and to channel the powerful energies coursing through. We want to be resilient, flexible and open to new possibilities. Know your intentions as the ship in which you cross these choppy seas. Witness the rise and call of humanity’s, or your own, shadow material. Let the unexpected become a foundation of new perspectives on yourself and life. Remember the fragility and beauty of this life, as our consciousness of Malaysian flight 370 teaches. Life now throws up sudden unexpected events. Be like the skier maneuvering new terrain, alert, compassionate, and innovative, breaking us open to a deepening of heart connection with each other. On April 8th, Mars shifts from morning to evening star. Its red light marking the horizon warns us to be aware of our Martian qualities. Its influence strengthens as it opposes the Sun and for the next two weeks will be closest to the earth until 2016. Not only does it highlight aggression, violence, accidents and anger, the less conscious expression, but for those who cultivate mindfulness, it brings clarity, and strength to inhabit the fullness of your life. It calls us to our destiny to assist the great transition that is before us all.

April 15, 12:42 pm, the lunar eclipse takes place. The shadow of the earth veils the moon in mysterious ritual for us to view the amazing dance of Earth, Sun, and Moon that held our ancestors in the awe of the cosmos. The 5th and exact alignment of Uranus and Pluto takes place on the 21st. The new moon this month, on the 28th, will be an annular eclipse of the Sun, a narrow ring of sunlight, haloing the dark of the moon. (Not visible to us). twelve oPPortunities For aPril: For sun anD risinG siGns aries (Mar 20-Apr 19): Hold on to your center. Dare yourself to see what appears challenging as new possibilities. Minimize your stress and busy-ness. Communications can carry intensity. Imagine yourself as a witness and cultivate detachment. This opens love, creativity and imagination for you. Don’t be afraid to see and embrace your shadow. That will transform its power into useful energy! taurus (Apr 20—May 20): Every morning, have a mindfulness practice. It will feel good because the timing is right for this support. It will relax you. Be sure you carve out time to be alone, to contemplate, to create, or write. This is your balance to the daily intensity. Your identity is going through a metamorphosis. Imagine yourself in a great shape shifting flow that will benefit all. Gemini (May 21—Jun 20): Don’t be surprised if your expression gets challenged. It may feel that you can’t quite put words to what you mean or intend. See if you can step back and be still. In the stillness you receive guidance. Then your work becomes clarified. Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 21): Imagine holding tight to the rudder of your ship while a storm whirls around you. Suddenly, there is silence and the air is taut with intensity. You are protected but it is time to transform. Review an old wound or pattern and know you are quite capable of ending that way of perceiving. Free yourself and/or others up and move into a new future. leo (Jul 22—Aug 22): Your strength this month lies in retreating and receiving/doing things that nurture your deep self. Crises have presented themselves to your way of thinking, your beliefs. Be transformed in your daily life by seeing the possibilities. Cultivating daily contemplations brings rewards. virgo (Aug 23—Sep 22): You feel the pull of life and death, the needs of others and a great desire to fulfill your own needs. Friends are helpers right now. They are mirrors to reflect the joy and love you give others. Spend time with them and extended family that appreciate you. libra (Sep 23—Oct 22): Navigate April waters carefully. It is very
important that you stay focused on your intention, and take actions toward them. But also step back from reactions or thoughtless words of others. Career and goal achievement possibilities are positive. Know that you are being asked to stay centered, and grounded, as you steer yourself through new territory. scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): This month brings awareness of your frustration, irritation, and anger. Give attention to what you really want. Step back from your hectic pace and thoughtfully map out your desire, otherwise your frustration will spill out through intense communications. Trust your inner perceptions and knowledge not your worries. This will shift any tension. sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 20): This is not a time to be stubborn and hold tight to your beliefs or point of view. Children may offer worthwhile insight to you. The issue is not really about money but something deeper; so let yourself experience some emotional discomfort. Quiet reflection softens you, opens your heart, and creates flexibility. Love and sweetness are at your door. Capricorn (Dec 21- Jan 19): Rapid change is afoot for you. Understand your inner need. Define it clearly. Get it out on the table for yourself; otherwise you will tend to react to provocations in ways that are not helpful. Support comes from a partner or close friend. Their affection steadies your direction. Remember to continue to focus on actions toward your goals. aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 17): This month, be alert to suddenly heated communications. Take note of your belief systems, and judgments, that toss out your words. Those words might be very subtle or blatant. Your inner authority is changing its point of view. It’s not what you know but how we all reflect some aspect of each other that opens your heart to new understanding. Pisces (Feb 18-Mar 19): You have a sense that the way forward is not clearly defined or even perceived. Issues have been raised in contracts with others. You can take leadership now expressing what seems true to you. There may be an emotional edge you trigger in yourself and others, but stay the course with compassion for all involved. Trust your instincts. Susan Heinz is a professional astrologer in Santa Cruz for 32 years, bringing together traditional and esoteric astrology, Tarot and Qabalah. he Fool card in a Tarot deck represents each of us... on the verge of decision... to be or not, to live or die, wise choice or folly. We form experience by choice and rue the consequences. Gifted this journey, we are divine fools initiating life awareness as we unfold consciousness in support of our passage. In this waking dream of infinite possibility, we could be experiencing lucid REM sleep in a lab experiment, or acting improvisation on an imagined stage in a make-believe universe. Getting into the part, we could become the dream.

Maintaining a healthy witness of all we survey appears necessary if we are to be grounded in the truth of our being. Being true to oneself reveals as our thoughts and actions create karma. Dealing with subsequent consequence develops who we are in the world. Perception is key; how do you perceive yourself to be? Are you living the dream you want to live? Asking these questions of ourselves, we expand in self knowledge, enabling better choices, like: be still and meditate; eat healthy food; exercise; be considerate of others; and above all, love. America Is Turning a Corner on Marijuana
S
by Matt Ferner, The Huffington Post ince the beginning of the year, more than 70 bills related to hemp have been introduced in more than half of the states in the U.S. That’s more than triple the number of hemp bills introduced during the same legislation period last year, and nearly double the total amount of hemp bills introduced in all of 2013. Added to that is the recent passage of the Farm Bill, which legalizes industrial hemp production for research purposes in states that permit it. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), one of the congressmen who introduced the industrial hemp amendment to the Farm Bill, told The Huffington Post that all the progress on hemp legislation is a key indicator of just how fast policy is changing in the U.S. “It’s not just turning a corner, it’s turning a corner and running downhill,” Blumenauer said. “The case against industrial hemp production has always been flawed, but now three things are happening. One, we’ve been able to make some significant inroads in a variety of states that have already passed legislation easing [production]. Second, the actual amendment to the Farm Bill was a beacon. And third, we are just seeing [that] the ice dam that has been containing modernization of our marijuana laws generally is cracking.” Thus far, 12 states have legalized industrial hemp production and about two dozen others have introduced legislation that, if passed, would authorize research, set up a regulatory framework or legalize the growing of industrial hemp in the state. In February, President Barack Obama signed the Farm Bill, which legalized industrial hemp production for research purposes. The state bills, like the hemp amendment to the Farm Bill, represent a sharp departure from a long-standing ban on hemp under the federal Controlled Substances Act, which doesn’t make a distinction between marijuana, the drug, and hemp, the plant. Page 28 Can’t these contribute to something greater than disaster movies and doomsday films? We need more than cautionary tales, we need visionary tales. A month ago, a group of us began searching the web for visionary tales, video segments that show less of the problem and more of the solution. We found so much! We began with TED Talks and You Tube and then one site led to another. Many brilliant people believe in our future and we want to share their ideas. We want to project these images on a big screen with lots of people so that we can feel our collective hope and strength. We want to build the field of consciousness that ignites and sustains positive change. We’re calling it CyberSpirit.
marijuana — Cannabis sativa — but they are cultivated differently in order to enhance or diminish their THC properties, depending on the crop. Hemp contains little to no THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana associated with the “high” sensation. Last year, Colorado farmer Ryan Loflin harvested the first known hemp crop grown on American soil in nearly 60 years, after the 2012 passage of Amendment 64 in Colorado legalized marijuana for recreational use and laid the groundwork for industrial hemp production in the state. An eager Loflin planted 55 acres of hemp before regulations were officially in place, but he met with no interference from the federal government or state officials. With Colorado’s regulations now on
the books, the state has become the first in the nation to legally regulate hemp since the federal government allowed for limited production. Hemp — sometimes called marijuana’s “sober cousin” — has a long history in America, one that skews largely toward legal use and encompasses a range of household products, including paper, oils, cosmetics and textiles. In the 1700s, American farmers were required by law to grow the plant in Virginia and other colonies. For hundreds of years hemp was grown and used to make rope, lamp oil, clothing and much more in the U.S. American industrial hemp production peaked in 1943, with more than 150 million pounds from 146,200 harvested acres. But production dropped to zero in the late 1950s as a result of “anti-drug sentiment and competition from synthetic fibers,” according to the Associated Press. http://www.cannabisnews.org/ america-is-turning-a-corner-onmarijuana/2014/04/02/ Source: Huffington Post (NY), Author: Matt Ferner, The Huffington Post, Published: April 2, 2014, Copyright: 2014 HuffingtonPost.com, LLC, website: http://www.huffingtonpost. com/.
