Needed: Warriors for peace, for the Earth, for justice, and for people everywhere by Nina Beety Qualifications: Love, passion, deep feelings, hearts, loud voices, willingness to take action day after day and be visible, sense of responsibility, willingness to sacrifice time, energy, comfort zone, and resources; ability to prioritize and triage; earth citizens. All ages desperately needed. Children and teens especially needed. Time: Now until we shift the paradigm, and recovery and healing are well underway.

We’re in an emergency.

Horrifying, escalating problems surround us. They are being ignored, lied about, covered up by local, state, and federal politicians. People go about their daily affairs as if everything is fine. Warriors for the earth and for all peoples of the earth are needed to stand up, speak out, be visible, and hit the streets. The biggest catastrophes are Fukushima and geoengineering/climate engineering. I’ve listed a few others including some local issues. The Fukushima disaster is worsening. Radiation levels are rising in Japan, in the ocean, and here. The constant airborne releases and the river of radiation is hitting the West Coast. Baby pelican births are down to 5% or less. In Washington, no baby orcas have survived since 2011. Sea life is dying, with marine animals starving to death. No state or federal testing of food, air, water, soil has been given to the public. EPA has already raised exposure limits and wants to do it again. To date, no action has been taken by local officials. ENE News has the most up-to-date info. Three articles this week. http://tinyurl.com/mo5k7wc http://tinyurl.com/kum3a7u http://tinyurl.com/k2686tj Geoengineering is a reality. The world’s atmosphere is being manipulated and poisoned by governments. This threatens the food supply, the health, and the existence of the Earth. The dangerous California drought is just one example of fake weather. Are military research facilities in Monterey involved? Only we can stop this. GeoEngineeringWatch.org has information and resources. This issue needs much more visible opposition from parenting and moms groups, permaculture, environmental, civil rights, disability, health and wellness, spiritual, and metaphysical groups. http://tinyurl.com/q9yq85v American foreign policy continues to spread death and destruction in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, Ukraine, the African continent, Afghanistan, etc. with Iran and North Korea in the crosshairs. Depleted uranium weapons are headed back to the Middle East. Petition is here http://tinyurl.com/oxdwhkg http://tinyurl.com/17xbq5k War crimes are being committed in Ukraine by the ultra-right, neo-Nazi Kiev regime supported by the US. 25,000-30,000 people have been killed according to one insider. Blackwater, renamed Academii, is there, as well as US military who are preparing terrorist groups. The Russian invasion threat is a hoax, says Veterans Today and many experts. Towns and cities have been severely damaged and infrastructure (water, electricity) destroyed by Kiev, and winter is coming. The California National Guard is involved with the Ukraine National Guard. This conflict is bringing us to the brink of nuclear war, and experts say the US plans a nuclear first strike against Russia.

http://tinyurl.com/lc6qtgc http://tinyurl.com/kbvq3r4 http://tinyurl.com/n69s996 The US Navy plans to turn three national forests, including the world-famous Olympic National Forest, into EMF weapon ranges using high-powered transmitters. Comments are now open until November 28, and they’re pouring in. More comments are needed. http://tinyurl.com/k8a39og The US Department of Transportation plans to require all cars to broadcast location, speed, and direction as the beginning of fully automating cars. The formal comment period on their draft approval is closed, but if you oppose this surveillance which will also blanket roads and highways with radiation, tell DOT anyway and copy Sam Farr. http://tinyurl.com/kkvkxc3 LBAM again? California Department of Food and Agriculture very quietly released a draft environmental impact review for its statewide “pest” control program. LBAM is still one of their “pests”, and this EIR, if approved, would eliminate reviews of individual projects. Public comments on the draft are now closed, but public outcry is needed to get CDFA to re-open the public comment period. Here’s an article with links to the documents. http://www.geoengineeringwatch.org/ one-more-toxic-blow-to-california/ PUC power grab — The PUC draft decision on Smart Meter opt-out goes far beyond Smart Meters. It creates a legal precedent for PUC power over our individual and communities’ legal rights. The California Constitution, Public Utilities Code and other laws gives authority to cities, counties, agencies, and the public to regulate utilities as well. Approving this decision would create a dangerous precedent of PUC power over all utility-related matters, including transmission corridors, power plants, nuclear reactors, wind and solar farms, and wireless antennas, and our communities would be less able to say, “No”. Comments are due November 18. Copy your state representatives and local officials. http://tinyurl.com/lgjksc6 Expansion of Camp Roberts/Fort Hunter Liggett in south Monterey County: What is the $39 million satellite communications center which breaks ground this month? Sam Farr won’t say except that it’s for the changing military mission. Will Monterey County be the command center for attacks on other countries including drone strikes? The Ebola fraud has been widely reported http://tinyurl.com/q4htqqq http://tinyurl.com/ocwm36n But now a cholera vaccine is planned for field testing in the US and other countries. There is no public comment until field tests are underway. http://tinyurl.com/q8wmcrr Cruise ships have started installed powerful Wi-Fi antennas along the coast that have a 40 mile range, so that Wi-Fi will reach ships offshore. http://tinyurl.com/ld5zn46 National parks are considering wireless antennas and many more cell towers; here’s a petition to leave parks wild: http://tinyurl.com/q72dap7 And the FCC has removed restrictions for putting cellular DAS antennas in communities. http://tinyurl.com/q9x9er5

Surveillance State

Chris Hedges to talk in Santa Cruz on Sunday, November 23rd by Matthew Renda, Romero Institute Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Chris Hedges will visit Santa Cruz on November 23 to share his unique and fiercely incisive views on the problems that continue to plague the modern iteration of the United States of America. Mr. Hedges is a former New York Times reporter, celebrated author and relentless social critic. A sharp and trenchant critic of unfettered capitalism in its current form, Hedges is also increasingly critical of the United States government’s attempts to curtail the constitutional rights of citizens in a post 9/11 world. “The words consent of the governed have become an empty phrase, Hedges asserts in his book Empire of Illusion. “Our textbooks on political science and economics are obsolete. Our nation has been hijacked by oligarchs, corporations, and a narrow, selfish, political, and economic elite, a small and privileged group that governs, and often steals, on behalf of moneyed interests. Hedges keynote speech will be followed by a discussion featuring renowned constitutional attorney Daniel Sheehan, Romero Institute Chief Counsel, and Food not Bombs co-founder Keith McHenry. “The NDAA is the gravest threat to constitutional rights I have witnessed in my lifetime, said Sheehan, who has worked on numerous cases with enormous implications to fundamental democratic notions in the United States, including the Iran Contra Affair and the Pentagon Papers. Keith McHenry has been repeatedly targeted by agents of the federal government relative to his activist work and is an example of the type of individual most likely to be affected by the passage of draconian laws purportedly aimed at curtailing terrorism. Mr. Hedges was the lead plaintiff in a federal lawsuit that alleged the NDAA to be unconstitutional. Hedges has written that the provisions of the NDAA not only stand in open defiance of the United States Constitution by denying American citizens a right to legal representation and a fair and public trial, but the law will be used to silence dissent. “Laws passed in the so-called war on terror will be used to turn all dissidents and activists into terrorism suspects, subjecting them to draconian forms of state repression and control, Hedges said.

If we are simply slabs of meat that have no access to the heavens until we die, then what we have now on Earth may make some sort of morbid sense. However, if we have lost our ancestral intelligence, forging a future without this accumulated wisdom could be a pretty big problem. Honoring and remembering the lessons, values, character, and goodness of our dearly departed may be essential to our future. The Halloween costumes of the future could celebrate the culture, agriculture, music, dance, art, and stories that were left by past souls who have lived and learned. The Earth could never have survived this long, if humans had always lived with the priorities and perspectives of our era. We can harness our history and build a future that is distinctly different from the current grid system that demotes the human spirit to the hedonistic, gruesome and grotesque, during a time that was once reserved for a hallowed evening of remembrance and respect. Aaron Carvajal invites you to see how we are taking action today by visiting future at futureofthefree.com and email us at connect@futureofthefree. com.

by Aaron Carvajal “Why does Halloween celebrate death, scary monsters and bloody messes?” My curious kids recently asked me this obvious question. Candy and costumes cloud the origins—whether we believe it honors the dead or is an ancient harvest festival—Halloween now revels in the dark and devilish. Why is there such a deep difference in what this hallowed evening originally observed and how it manifests today? Does it matter if we remember and honor the dead? Why has Halloween, a celebration of what we have been, turned into a horror show? Today’s world centers on the science and math of the material world, while delegating matters of the spirit and soul to religion, philosophy, and weirdos. The underlying message of our economy-centric society is that the esoteric is really inconsequential. The passing on of our ancestor’s life map, has been replaced by a fixation on fake numbers and constant online engagement. For some, this has been a wellspring of knowledge and cosmic connections. For many others, it is strong stimulation of the senses, but scarce on human presence. Our modern classroom lessons lay the foundation of humanity represented only by the last few thousand years of civilization. These empires are presented as the epoch of human progress and the whole of our history. We reinforce this tale with our heroes, celebrities, and leaders. But, what of

WheN WOMeN Rise, We All Rise

by Carmel Jud, Founder & Executive D i re c t o r, R i s i n g International remember reading a U.N. report in 1999 and being flabbergasted. The report revealed that women play a significant role in ending world poverty if and only if they were given a chance to earn an income. I thought, “Do you mean to tell me that we know a way to alleviate suffering in the world and no one (at least no one I know) is talking about it?” Fifteen years later, the world is catching up.

Today it’s much more common knowledge that when a woman in a developing country earns money and educates her children, she triggers amazing results. Birth rates drop. Infant and maternal mortality are reduced. Family planning increases. Housing and sanitation improve. Nutrition, health, and life expectancy are enhanced, and gross domestic product grows. When women rise, we all rise. The challenge, still today, is creating opportunities for women to thrive. I’m proud to say this is why Rising International exists. Rising International economically empowers women both locally and globally. We offer a local program

in the U.S. that enables women to earn a supplemental income while doing meaningful work that creates economic benefit for women across the globe. Rising International trains women and teens in the U.S. to run their own Rising home party businesses; Think Avon or Tupperware. But instead of selling makeup or plastic containers on a for-profit basis, Rising International, a non-profit, features products handmade by women who are rising above poverty, war, and human trafficking. In homes throughout the U.S., beautiful products made by these global women entrepreneurs are being sold by local women entrepreneurs. Rising’s local business owners are able to help land mine survivors

in Cambodia by selling their handmade silk scarves. They’re helping human trafficking survivors in Nepal and India create a new life by selling their handmade jewelry. In the D.R.

Congo, Rising business owners are helping rape survivors recover from trauma by selling their beautiful aprons. Everything a local Rising business owner sells impacts a life. If you’re inspired to join Rising International on its mission to economically empower women everywhere, here are some ways to take action: • Become a Rising Representative ( A home party business owner) – It’s not too late to join this program to earn extra holiday income; And we set up the parties for you! • Host a Rising Home Party – It’s the most fun you’ll have changing the world! Hosting a Rising Home Party is easy and super fun! • Host a Rising Global PopUp Marketplace at your p l a c e o f w o r k – We b r i n g our beautiful handmade products made by women living in the poorest and most dangerous places of the world to your company. We set up in an appropriate area for employees to shop for a cause! For more info on all the above, email Sharon@ri singinternational.org. • If you haven’t heard about the amazing raffle, purchase a Pebble Beach VIP Getaway Raffle Ticket – 100% of proceeds train 100 women in the Bay Area to be Rising business owners! by Janet Caliri ith its difficulty in being diagnosed due to predominantly intangible symptoms, thus life-altering effects, adrenal fatigue and exhaustion are not only rarely spoken of, but also discredited amongst most western doctors. Dr. James Wilson states that 80% of people are estimated to experience adrenal fatigue during their lifetime. The evidence of adrenal fatigue or exhaustion does not exist due to lack of scientific facts to support the theory (Deasey, 2011). This neglect is unlikely due to its ambiguous nature, but rather its evocation of the inevitable and possibly distasteful rite of passage. In other words, there’s no profit for the pharmaceutical companies and this time consuming healing process is delicate. From my personal four plus years of dealing with adrenal exhaustion, this journey is healed primarily through a holistic approach and renewed commitment to selfcare. Thus, the primary and most effective tool is removing or minimizing all stressors which can range from professional relationships to electromagnetic frequency to certain foods (Gedgaudas, 2011). Adrenal glands are endocrine glands that sit on top of the kidneys, responsible for managing stress and regulating homeostasis of the body. They support proper response to daily life conditions by producing cortisol, DHEA and adrenaline. Therefore, when faulty, some bodily functions such as internal temperature, blood sugar and PH can become irregular. Chronic stress or trauma are the two major factors leading to adrenal fatigue and exhaustion (Challem S88). Thus, the more stress we experience, the more our adrenals are exerting without replenishing. Therefore, the value of prevention lies in discovering the root cause and how these tiny glands have mastery over our bodily functions. Some initial symptoms can be a severe drop in productivity and chronic fatigue, large abdomen (weight gain for no reason,) night sweats, brain fog (impaired brain function.) An example of behavioral change is although

I am a great initiator and cohesive connection in my relationships, I barely spoke on the phone or socialized, as a conversation exerted all the energy I had in me. Therefore, I isolated myself and two friendships ended as a result of my strange behavior. As for diagnosis, be sure to have the saliva test done alongside blood work. Blood work alone is not enough to properly diagnose adrenal malfunction. Long term choices to improve and sustain adrenal stability are commitment to a newfound whole foods nutritional plan, healthy relationships, herbal remedies (comprehensive vitamins such as B12 complex and Cortisol Manager.) Allow yourself sufficient sleep! Move your body regularly. I keep cardio exercise at or under 30 minutes. Learn to read your body and honor that intuition. Compassion is essential in healing so create a daily practice of gratitude and forgiveness, laughter and a state of child-like wonder. Surround yourself with particular individuals who sincerely support your calamity. These are just a few illustrations of my personalized program. Every body has a different constitution, thus consult with your physician or medical professional to cultivate your own healing program. I gratefully hired a diagnostic nutritionist/metabolic typing advisor. To that end, adrenal gland issues are subtle yet real. Without them properly functioning, we can easily become an estranged stranger to ourselves and loved ones. SLEEP MAY LEAD

by Dr. Joseph Mercola o optimize sleep, you also need to make sure you’re going to bed early enough, because if you have to get up at 6:30am, you’re just not going to get enough sleep if you go to bed after midnight. Fitness trackers such as the UP2424 can track both daytime body movement and sleep, allowing you to get a better picture of how much sleep you’re actually getting. Chances are, you’re getting at least 30 minutes less sleep than you think, as most people do not fall asleep as soon as their head hits the pillow. Besides maintaining a natural circadian rhythm, there are a number of additional ways to help improve your sleep if you’re still having trouble. Below are half a dozen of my top guidelines for promoting good sleep. For a comprehensive sleep guide, please see my article ‘33 Secrets to a Good Night’s Sleep’. Avoid watching TV or using your computer at night—or at least about an hour or so before going to bed. TV and computer screens emit blue light, similar to daylight. This tricks your brain into thinking it’s still daytime, thereby shutting down melatonin secretion. Sleep in darkness. You don’t need to sleep in total darkness; the intensity of light has to be at a certain level (different levels depending on the spectrum) to suppress melatonin production. That said, complete darkness is probably best. I recommend covering your windows with blackout shades or drapes, or use an eye mask. Also avoid using night-lights, and cover up the display on your clock radio. Keep the temperature in your bedroom below 70 degrees F. A reduction in core body

temperature is a part of the sleep-initiation and sleep maintenance process. A room temperature that is too warm or too cool can prevent your core temperature from lowering to its ideal place for good sleep. Aim to keep your bedroom temperature between 60 to 68 degrees, and identify the best room temperature for you through trial and error. Take a hot bath or shower 30 minutes before bedtime. The hot bath increases your core body temperature, opening up the blood vessels in your limbs. When you get out of the bath, heat can leave your body easily (if the room temperature is cool), abruptly dropping your core body temperature, making you drowsy and ready for great sleep. Check your bedroom for electro-magQHWLF ÀHOGV (EMFs). These can disrupt your pineal gland and the production of melatonin and serotonin, and may have other negative effects as well. To do this, you need a gauss meter. You can ÀQG YDULRXV PRGHOV RQOLQH VWDUWLQJ DURXQG WR 6RPH H[SHUWV HYHQ UHFRPPHQG SXOOLQJ your circuit breaker before bed to shut down all power in your house. 6. ChiropraCtiC Corner: Get ready For the “MY health 10-Month Challenge”

A

by Sylvia Skefich, D.C. s a practitioner I have endeavo red to g iv e people the tools and the help they need to maintain their own health to their fullest potential. I don’t care if people come see me, another practitioner, or none at all, so long as people are getting the support they need to “arm themselves with health.” The fact is that the fastest growing segment of population is those people over 100 years old. Face it; the chances of you becoming very old are pretty good. So do you want to be old, active, and vibrant?... or old, and on a slippery slope of health? Recently I came up with an idea, bam!— there it was. (I felt it in my heart too, so I knew that I needed to manifest this idea and soon). The idea is currently in its inception phase but the basic premise is a challenge that I am putting out to YOU, my patient-base and my community. I am calling it the “MY Health 10-Month Challenge.” I challenge YOU to join a momentum of like-minded people, and to empower yourself with tools that you can do at home to stay healthy for the long run, and to have fun doing so.

I suffer from depressIon. Can naturopathIC medICIne help me?

ow is it possible that someone that has been suffering for years and, taken a myriad of prescription medicines, would respond to something as simple as natural medicines? The main differentiation between treating depression with holistic medicine versus prescription drugs is actually not in the medicines themselves, but in the approach to diagnosis. At any given time, I may see ten different patients labeled as suffering from Depression and yet my treatment approach will radically differ from one to the next. During the last decade, the media and health food industry have presented a number of natural substances as great “holistic remedies” for depression. Some examples are St John’s Wort, SAM-E and B Vitamins. While the motivation is sincere, they missed the point of what true healing (cure) entails. The role of a good Naturopathic Physician is that of a ‘Medical Sherlock Holmes’: to investigate hidden clues for the imbalances in the individual’s body chemistry. Just like the famous detective, we find subtle clues that guide us to a proper diagnosis and the “right treatment”, which is always highly individualized for each patient. Hence, I search for clues in areas such as: Nutritional status Digestion and elimination Neurotransmitter (brain molecules) levels Essential Fatty Acids ratios Blood sugar and Insulin fluctuations Food allergies or intolerances Heavy Metals Toxicity Sex Hormones levels Detoxification patterns Psychological and family history If you or someone you care about suffers from depression—where do you start looking? If the depression is mild and doesn’t have a large impact on your daily function—the first

place to concentrate is in your food intake, digestion and elimination. High levels of sugar intake can dramatically affect emotional response. Absence of beneficial fats, particularly omega 3’s, can affect neural and hormonal function. Improper mineral balances can aggravate depressive moods by slowing metabolism. If digestion is improper, then many nutrients that are essential to proper brain function may not be absorbed sufficiently. If, on the other side, elimination is improper, toxins can be incorporated into the blood stream, liver function can be taxed and the foundation for emotional wellbeing is shaken. I also all too frequently find patients with a myriad of low thyroid symptoms who tell me that their thyroid has been checked and “it’s fine”. I start them on thyroid support and their depression lifts. Psychological trauma is of course always taken into account. However, even in the presence of severe psychological dysfunction, a balanced chemistry will make the difference between suffering in chronic depression and being able to move through the trauma. Severe depression requires more than a “doit-yourself” approach. Find a licensed practitioner that is knowledgeable on the areas specified above and in whom you can feel a sense of trust (essential!). As someone who has a personal history with mild-moderate depression, some of my greatest moments as a physician have been to witness patients that have suffered from depression come out of it and have the opportunity to experience joy. Dr. Tonya Fleck-D’Andrea has been practicing medicine for 10 years. Liberate Release the Medicine • Heal the Sick Stop All Cannabis Arrests • Stop the Lies Marijuana End the Prison State • Cures Not Wars Giving THANKS for the Compassionate Flower and its Benefits Our THEME for our Thanksgiving Issue is The Compassion Flower. We are truly thankful for this natural plant that has been gifted to our planet Earth. Hemp alone has 25,000 uses and Marijuana itself with its active THC, CBD, and many other cannabinoid elements has proven to help the healing of people, young and old, with different ailments. I remember when my husband’s grandfather, who had been a Pharmacist for many years, told us that the majority of medicines that the pharmacies dispensed contained active THC (not for making people ‘high’ but for making the medications effective as healing agents). He told us that even headache remedies were made with cannabis and, he said “it really worked and had no side effects”. I also remember when my dear mother, Bette voted for Measure A (1992) which called for legal Medical Marijuana in our Santa Cruz area. Bette did not like the ‘idea’ of smoking marijuana ‘to get high’ (as she had been duped, like so many were from the atrocious REEFER MADNESS Propaganda Movie). However, my 80 year old mom had the intelligence to listen to information and research it to find out that it makes such good sense. It is so nice when people are actually functioning intelligently, which to me means that they are open enough to be “LifeLong Learners”—to even learn something new at any age, all ages, and even at age 80!!! There has been so much going on in the USA regarding legalizing marijuana for medical as well as recreational purposes. With this recent election, 3 more states passed Recreational Marijuana Laws including Oregon, Alaska and the District of Columbia, joining Colorado and Washington which legalized recreational use in 2012. We know that there is controversy out there regarding the details of legalization, especially regarding taxation and regulatory issues, and we all know that the “devil is in the details”. Many growers and dispensaries are justifiably concerned that they continue to be allowed to have viable businesses and not have the governments ‘taking over’ for ‘their own’ monetary gain (you know, ‘the same old, same old’!!). By the way, check out the fact that the state of Colorado is doing well with this venture that they now have, legalizing recreational marijuana in many respects. We are proud of having a Column some years ago entitled, “Hemp for Health” written by Chris Conrad (an authority in this area). We have continued this Column and it is now entitled, ‘Compassion Flower Resource GUIDE’ . We ask you to read it, give us feedback and your ideas for

pertinent info and articles. My personal favorite book is Jack Herer’s, ‘The Emperor Wears No Clothes’. IT is still available—just do a search. I learned so much about the history and uses of cannabis from this book. Did you know that the first (and, many, many after the first one) American Flag was made on Hemp cloth? That so much clothing, paper, all sailing vessels’ sails and ropes were made from Hemp? Did you know that a mandate from President Thomas Jefferson was that a family could be fined $150 for not having hemp/cannabis growing in their home gardens? Did you know that the USA is the ONLY country in the world that would not allow the growing of Hemp until recently? Several states, including CA have approved the growing of hemp and while it is still heavily regulated by the feds, they are allowing test plots to be grown in several of these states. Did you know that the owner of Hearst Castle in Cambria, California and the San Francisco Chronicle, along with vast acres of forestland etc., partnered with the plastics companies like, DuPont and Dow to make the lying Propaganda Movie, ‘Reefer Madness’ to scare the heck out of ‘we the people’ with their lies about marijuana? Now, why would they do that?? You can send in the answer to this question and you will be entered in a Drawing for a pair of tickets for Kuumbwa Jazz Center (a gift for our magazine to you). Just email us the answer to: awaken@connectionmagazineonline.com. In the Subject Area, please write: Contest regarding Hemp/Cannabis by Nov. 28th or sooner. We will do more with this in the future. With Thanks and Warm Regards, Pattie & Thom P.S. We are not encouraging youngsters to imbibe in smoking marijuana (so as not to interfere with their brain development, etc.) except if a parent and/or their doctor are giving them the cannabinoid oils to heal them. Have you seen the youtube video called, ‘leaf’? A mother was told that there was nothing else that the medical profession could do for her infant’s brain tumor— basically, the infant would just go home and die. The astute mother did the research, gave her child raw cannabinoid oils and the infant was healed and is alive and well today. I know you, like us, are LifeLong Learners. BREAKING NEWS!!! Voters passed Proposition 47 and California is now the first state to end felony sentencing for simple drug possession. YOU made this incredible victory possible. Thank you for helping us cross the finish line! California’s new law will change sentencing from felonies to misdemeanors for six low-level, nonviolent crimes such as simple drug possession and petty theft. This will reduce the number of people spending time in prison who don’t need to be there for any reason of justice or public safety. It went into effect immediately, at 12:01 am on November 5th. Passage of Proposition 47 is a significant step toward ending mass incarceration and the war on drugs. It has the potential to drastically reduce the number of people in state prisons and county jails and it will dedicate the savings— likely more than $1 billion over five years—to schools, victim services, and mental health and drug addiction treatment. The impact of Prop.

47 in California on wasteful corrections spending and individual lives will be profound and surely resonate across the country. DPA’s lobbying arm, Drug Policy Action, backed this initiative with assistance on the drafting, as well as financial and other support for the campaign. You should feel proud of your role in this victory. Proposition 47 is a significant step forward for California that could boost efforts in other states to follow our lead. And, we’re looking forward to 2016, when there will be even more drug policy reform measures on the ballot in California and across the country. Our victory is a shift from punitive drug war policies in favor of humane alternatives. We’re excited to work with you to achieve even more. Congratulations, and thank you for making this win possible! Lynne Lyman State Director, California Drug Policy Alliance

Release the Medicine • Heal the Sick Liberate Stop All Cannabis Arrests • Stop the Lies Marijuana End the Prison State • Cures Not Wars Would You Try Medical Marijuana for What Ails You? by Gregory T. Carter, MD It’s now prescribed for nerve pain, nausea, glaucoma, headaches, certain types of cancer and much more. Would you use cannabis (marijuana) if your doctor recommended it for, say, nerve pain or to help control muscle spasms? Twenty-three states, plus the District of Columbia, have now legalized it for such medical uses.* But, do the benefits of medical marijuana truly outweigh the risks? Who should consider trying it—and what’s the best way to use it safely? To learn more, Bottom Line/Health spoke with cannabis expert Gregory T. Carter, MD. Why has marijuana suddenly become so popular as a medical treatment? There’s really nothing new about the medical use of cannabis. It was included in the US Pharmacopeia (the official authority for prescription and over-the-counter drugs) until the early 1940s, when, due largely to political opposition, it was removed [editor’s note: remember in the Intro—William Randolph Hearst & Dow/Dupont Chemical?). For this reason, it has been difficult to study cannabis for medical purposes. The US government still classifies cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug—that is, a substance with no medical benefits and a high potential for abuse. Although federal law prohibits the use of medical marijuana, doctors now prescribe it in states where it has been legalized by the state legislatures. What conditions is marijuana most likely to help? Several—but, because research has been impeded by political considerations, the level of evidence varies for each condition. Beginning nearly 30 years ago, the prescription drug dronabinol (Marinol) was approved by the FDA for treating appetite loss in AIDS patients. It’s a synthetic version of one of the active compounds in cannabis. Since then, cannabis has been shown to relieve nausea in cancer patients. Unlike the synthetic version, it’s not a single agent. It contains 80 to 100 different medicinally active compounds known as cannabinoids. New lab and animal studies suggest that cannabis can be an effective treatment for cancer itself. The active compounds have been shown to limit tumor invasiveness and the activation of

chemical signals that stimulate growth in some types of cancers. Patients who have nerve pain often get more relief with cannabis than with other prescription medications, such as gabapentin (Neurontin). Cannabis also has been used successfully to treat muscle spasms, seizures and other neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis. And, it seems to be effective at controlling the tics and behavior problems caused by diseases such as Tourette’s Syndrome. Some people also use it for fibromyalgia and glaucoma. If my doctor prescribes cannabis, what type should I buy? Cannabis dispensaries (in states where medical uses are permitted) typically sell many different strains, which affect users in different ways. The best medical strains have a high concentration of cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN), with relatively small amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound responsible for most of the intoxicating effects. Bear in mind that even in states that have legalized it, insurance does not cover the cost of medical marijuana, which ranges from $200 to $500 an ounce. Is it better to smoke medical marijuana or eat it? Neither. It’s unlikely that the small amount of smoke from medical doses increases the risk for emphysema or other lung diseases, but the smoke does contain carcinogens. Why take chances? Edible forms of cannabis—such as baked goods, shakes and candies—are effective, but it’s difficult to control your intake. The absorption rate will depend on what’s already in your stomach, and it can take up to two hours to feel the effects. The best way is to use a vaporizer. The medicinal compounds vaporize at a much lower temperature than is required for combustion (smoking). The inhaled vapor gives the same rapid onset as smoking—you’ll feel the effects within a few minutes. Vaporized cannabis is safer than inhaled smoke. Vaporizers are sold online and at dispensaries for around $100 to as much as $400. You can also buy sublingual tinctures at dispensaries. You put a few drops under your tongue. You’ll feel the effects almost as quickly as from smoking. This form of medical marijuana can be just as effective as other forms, but concentrations

are not standardized, so it can be a bit harder to provide the correct dose. What is the right dose? Everyone reacts differently to cannabis, and some strains are more potent than others. If your doctor prescribes cannabis, don’t leave the office without detailed instructions—how much to use…how often…and what to expect. Marijuana also interacts with certain medications you may be taking, such as sedatives, including the tranquilizer lorazepam (Ativan) and the sleep drug zolpidem (Ambien), so be sure to also discuss all medications you take. What are the risks? Your motor skills and reaction times can be diminished, particularly within the first few hours. You don’t want to drive, operate power tools or engage in other tasks that require serious concentration while the drug is active in your body, which varies widely depending on the person and the strain of cannabis but is typically three to six hours. What about addiction? Few people who use cannabis for medical purposes will become dependent, develop cravings or go on to abuse other drugs. If you have a history of alcoholism or other forms of addiction, talk to your doctor about this before using cannabis. Medical marijuana has been legalized in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. Seven states—Alabama, Florida, Iowa, Mississippi, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin—allow medical marijuana for specific conditions, such as epilepsy.

War On Marijuana Unconstitutional, Doctors Testify In Federal Court 10.6% Less Property Crime in Denver 60% Fewer Homicides in Denver 5.6% Less Violent Crime in Denver $12 - 40 Million Saved Each Year in Enforcement Costs 10,000 Jobs Created in the Marijuana Industry

by David Downs The U.S. government claims marijuana is a dangerous, addictive drug with no medical benefits. But that claim will be up for debate Monday in California when a federal judge is scheduled to hear testimony from doctors that conclude the opposite. Doctors Carl Hart, Associate Professor of Psychology at Columbia University, retired physician Phillip Denny, and Greg Carter, Medical Director of St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute in Spokane, Washington will testify Monday that marijuana — real name, “cannabisâ€? — is not the demon drug the federal government makes it out to be. Accepted science does not justify the listing of cannabis as a dangerous “Schedule Iâ€? substance, many say. “It is my considered opinion that including marijuana in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act is counter to all the scientific evidence in a society that uses and values empirical evidence,â€? Dr. Hart declared. “After two decades of intense scientific inquiry in this area, it has become apparent the current scheduling of cannabis has no footing in the realities of science and neurobiology.â€? This is an unprecedented hearing, writes cannabis law reform advocate Paul Armentano, deputy director of NORML. “This is the first time in recent memory that a federal judge has granted an evidentiary hearing on a motion challenging the statute which classifies cannabis to be one of the most dangerous illicit substances in the nation.â€? Attorneys Zenia Gilg and Heather Burke write that “In effect, the action taken by the Department of Justice is either irrational, or more likely proves ‌ [that] marijuana does not fit the criteria of a Schedule I Controlled Substance.â€? Testimony for the evidentiary hearing of United States v. Pickard, et. al., should last three days.

Government witness Bertha Madras, former White House Drug Czar deputy director under George W. Bush will defend the Schedule 1 designation. Madras states cannabis has no accepted medical use and is unsafe. Madras states she supports the pharmaceuticalization of THC and CBD, while criminalizing the use of the plant they come from. “Although more than 30% of current therapeutic drugs are plant-derived, no one currently eats or smokes foxglove plants to treat a heart condition, chews cinchona bark to alleviate malaria symptoms, or eats opium poppies to relieve post-surgical pain, Madras writes. In places where medical marijuana is legal, folks have moved on from smoking it to vaporization, edibles, tinctures, and topicals. About one in 20 California adults are estimated to have used medical marijuana for a serious illness, according to the most recent survey data. Ninety-two percent of them are estimated to believe cannabis was helpful for their condition. Critics of Madras note the government has actually patented cannabis for use in stroke therapy. Smoked or eaten cannabis also has no overdose level. Conversely, “medically accepted prescription pills will kill about 22,114 people from drug overdose this year. President Richard Nixon placed cannabis in Schedule 1 in 1970, overruling the recommendations of his own National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse, which found “little proven danger of physical or psychological harm from the experimental or intermittent use of the natural preparations of cannabis. http://tinyurl.com/kak9f88 Printed with permission.

The Emerald Cup ‌ the Value of Cannabis by Tim Blake I was born in San Jose but spent part of every summer growing up in Capitola. My family moved over to Santa Cruz when I was in the eighth grade and my five sisters and brother all still live there with their families. Even though I moved to Mendocino County twenty years ago I still consider Santa Cruz my hometown. Some of my fondest memories are of going to the county fair every year in Watsonville. Like most people in our country, taking in the smells and sights of the fair are a ritual part of the fall. I grew my first cannabis crop in Santa Cruz back in 1974. I’ve been growing ever since then. Some friends and I were sitting around one day eleven years ago, talking about how much we enjoyed going to the county fair and how we’d love to have a cannabis version of our own. So we did it. What started out as a small celebration of the fall cannabis harvest has blown up into a true cannabis country fair. We moved from Area 101, my place in Mendocino county, to Humboldt and then to the Sonoma county fairgrounds last year, as the event grew to a size that demanded that much space. The Emerald Cup is now in its eleventh year. The Cup is the largest organic, outdoor cannabis competition in the world. Last year we had two hundred and sixty entries. It was quite a display, seeing all those entries in the case at the event. What began as an all night party has transformed into two days of celebration and learning; with two stages of panels, another stage with workshops, over a hundred speakers, all organic food, almost two hundred vendors, and some of the best music around. I’m quite proud of the fact that we’re now considered not only the best cannabis celebration in the states, but also the most informative gathering you’ll find. We bring together every aspect of our culture, with the leading organic growing techniques, along with medical, science, and legal knowledge provided to our attendees. We started out with just a flower competition, but that’s expanded to include a solvent less concentration contest. Everyone’s into dabs and hash oil, but we’ve found that the best concentrate makers in the world can compete with them with just using ice. You should check out the amazing work of the entrants. They’re making the best chemical free concentrates in the world, hands down. Our winners turn out product that looks just like best oils; only its completely organic. We’ve added a CBD competition over the past couple of years. With all the latest research proving just how healing our medicine is, this competition has been expanded, and is turning into quite

the sideshow on its own. Tictures, salves, oils, and edibles are being created by so many folks these days, it’s hard to keep up with all the new products. And we’re just beginning to scratch the service of the potential of our sacred plant. With all the legal research going on now, who knows how many different discoveries will come forth over the coming years. Cannabis is curing almost every illness they try it on; from cancers to epilepsy. I’ve personally been healed of cancer using cannabis, and have first hand witnessed over a dozen miraculous healings of people who were told by doctors they were not going to be able to save them; only to watch cannabis give them back their health and lives. These days everyone has a person in their family with serious health issues. Cannabis should give be an accepted option to try. Having been in the cannabis culture most of my life, I’m astounded and touched to see how far we’ve come, and how far we’re going to go in the future. California will pass an initiative in 2016 to legalize adult(recreational) use of cannabis; that is a foregone conclusion. We’ve taken a temporary back seat to Washington and Colorado, but we’ll rightfully reclaim our title as the place people from all over the country and #ONNECTION?3## PDF 0world want to go to find their bud and medicine. California’s farmers produce the best cannabis in the world. They’re projecting billions of dollars in additional revenue from cannabis in California once we go legal. Its an exciting time in history for everyone involved in cannabis, and it’s only going to get better and better. I love Connection Magazine because it brings together all the things I’m passionate about; spirituality, natural healing and health, conspiracy theories, and lately, more and more cannabis information. Thank you Thom and Pattie, for being leaders in providing the most informative information possible to the public at large. Its something you’ll only find in a town like Santa Cruz. That’s why I’m proud to call this place home! I hope to see you at this year’s Emerald Cup! Peace and Love, Tim Blake www.theemeraldcup.com

by Ed Rosenthal n mid-August I attended Seattle Hempfest. It was the first Hempfest since the implementation of I-502, which passed by popular vote in 2012 and “legalized” marijuana in the State of Washington. What Washington has is not legalization and it is clear to me we must define what legalization really means to users of marijuana through a Marijuana Users Bill of Rights before any more legalization laws of this kind pass. This year’s festival was probably the lamest one held in Seattle since the end of the Drug War. It was a marijuana festival with only two small designated consumption areas and although there were no cops around, most people (with the exception of yours truly) didn’t light up in public areas. Instead people snuck behind vendor tents, lit up backstage or down by the water – out of sight – remembrances of high school past. All the result of I-502. Don’t let anyone say this is legalization. Nothing is legal except possession of under an ounce of storebought marijuana. In Washington State, legalization means possession of 28 grams is legal, 29 is a misdemeanor and 40 grams or more is a felony. Smoking in public is a misdemeanor. Home growing is a felony. The state commission is trying to eliminate medical marijuana as a separate category. Patients will be subject to the same confiscatory taxes as adult users. Driving with a minimum amount of non-intoxicating analog in blood results in a DUI. I call this the “Chauffer Employment Act” because no one who uses regularly can pass the blood test. As you can see, this is hardly legalization. It was the big lie put together by do-gooder social activists who were ignorant about the issue, took no advice from stakeholders and worked mainly with prosecutors and their kind. As a result, the law is awful, stinks of pork juice, and actually worsens the situation of the average Washington State marijuana user. This is why marijuana users should never vote for a bill that prosecutors and cops like, it’s just not in their interest. Now, some of the same people who brought this travesty to Washing-

ton State are attempting to carpetbag their way into California to create the same sort of “legalization”. It will not happen. No pasaran! It’s up to the people who have a stake in this issue, the marijuana users, to create a bill that creates a realistic, workable law that protects the interests of the people—whether or not they use marijuana. It’s not our job to placate the criminal justice system, they have no stake in this and they have no expertise to add to the discussion. The only thing they have been taught is how to recognize marijuana, bust people for it, and sadistically ruin people’s lives in a job that they chose. Most of them have irrational prejudices against marijuana and have, at best, ambivalent attitudes about people who use it. When the 2016 initiative passes in California, cops won’t have to be concerned about enforcing the law because they will not be enforcing a law. Instead marijuana will be subject to civil regulation, not criminal. Cops will be able to get back to protecting and serving their communities. Some people, such as the Washington State wimps, want us to keep the cops happy. Pardon me, but I don’t think we have to compromise with them. We have the votes and, though they might grunt and squeal, I feel about as willing to compromise with the criminal justice system as it has with us in this 77-year fight. Marijuana will be legal and the cops will not be part of the solution. As Amy Poehler is renowned for saying, “I don’t fucking care if you like it.” My main concern is that we create an initiative that will pass and be effective. So, after talking with other activists, I developed the Marijuana Initiative Bill of Rights. I think that we can develop a consensus around this and work outwards from there. Hopefully this can be used as a template for the 2016 California Initiative and other initiatives around the country.

The Bill of Rights of Marijuana Users

1.) All current marijuana laws prohibiting possession, use, sales and production shall be repealed and this law will replace them. 2.) Cannabis will be placed under civil authority and regulation. Criminal penalties will apply only to a lim-

ited number of activities. 3.) All residents shall have the right to grow their own marijuana and to share it with family and friends. 4.) Medical marijuana shall be manufactured and provided separately than adult-use and a marijuana recommendation shall be treated as a prescription by the state. Medical dispensaries will be permitted in all jurisdictions. 5.) Adult-use stores shall be allowed on a county and city basis. They will be prohibited only by a vote of the people to prohibit them. 6.) Manufacture and processing shall be permitted in all cities and counties, and licenses to do so shall be granted when the zoning and appropriate permits are secured. These permits and the zoning laws shall not be designed to restrict the opening or continued existence of these enterprises. 7.) Adult use shall be permitted on private premises at the owner’s discretion; “public” smoking bans may apply to streets and other public property. In 1972 the first California Marijuana Initiative proclaimed as its goal, FREE, LEGAL, BACKYARD MARIJUANA—it still rings true! In the past, Marijuana Policy Project and Drug Policy Alliance have been very influential in the funding of state marijuana initiatives. If you like the ideas expressed here write to Drug Policy Alliance and Marijuana Policy Project and tell them that you will settle for nothing less. It is important that they understand the opinions of marijuana users who they say they are trying to help.

Here is a sample message:

I am a marijuana user concerned about the implications of Washington’s “legalization” law and I don’t want that sort of legalization in [your state]. I want you to know I will not support an initiative, or a politician that supports an initiative, that is not in line with the Marijuana Users Bill of Rights. Sincerely, Your Name Ed Rosenthal. As Barry and I left the search area, the young German security staff all waved to us and thanked us. Now we had a quarter of a mile to the gate and only ten more minutes left. We rushed as best we could and arrived just as they announced general boarding. Over a hundred people stood up and started rushing the gate. Normally I like to get on the plane early and get settled before the crowds rush on, and I will usually stand at the gate long before the boarding is announced. But here we were with the crowds pushing around us. A young man in a red shirt took notice of us and spread his arms wide to stop the much younger passengers and for a brief moment let us by and into the plane before most of the people. It only took him two seconds to perform this kindness towards us, and yet it made such a lasting impression. While putting our bags up in the storage, we noticed behind us a woman struggling with her bag. This same man in the red shirt rushed forward and helped her. She was so grateful to him. by Joyce and Barry Vissell n 1993, Conari Press published a book called Random Acts of Kindness. This book started a movement of people looking for ways to be kind to complete strangers. It was not at all unusual to see a bumper sticker on the car in front of you that read, “Practice Random Acts of Kindness.â€? My favorite story from the book is a person who makes a point of paying for the person behind them whenever they cross a toll bridge. The stranger then pulls up to the booth and is told that their fee was paid. For a while, acts like these became popular. But somehow in all of the busyness of our world right now this lovely movement seems to have faded a bit. Barry and I have just returned from our three weeks of work in Norway, Italy and Germany. Finally we made it to the area of our gate when we discovered that we were chosen for a random search, (not random kindness, but random search). This was not your average two minute search. It took at least ten minutes per person. They investigated everything in our carryons, purse and body. Not only did we have to go through the scanner, but we also had to endure a body search that was embarrassing. Your Brain—the Final Frontier

by Karin Leonard oday’s quest leads us to an exciting frontier, to possibly the greatest venture of our times: the unexplored regions of your mind, a world so vast and exotic that it dwarfs the far reaches of the Milky Way. What about those other 95%? By now it has been in just about every news tabloid: Most of us—at best—use about 1-5% of the brain’s capacity. Like any adventurous spirit, I’ve always been curious what the rest of it might be for? Knowing that nature doesn’t waste her moves, I bet you any amount of money the gray matter between your ears is packed with more surprises than Christmas Morning. And leaving those treasures untouched is like buying the newest PC, and being content with making a nice desk decoration out of it! Mind you, for most activities—eating, school, even work—we may be able to get through life without ever loading the hard disk. Compared to what our full capacities might be, most of what we are familiar with can probably ÀW RQ D à RSS\ But if you’re anything like me, you just can’t stand the thought of leaving a present unopened‌ and you certainly want to know what all those gigabytes on your computer are capable of, don’t you? The Genie is at your Service With about 100 billion brain cells at birth, and about 500 trillion connections between these tiny power centers, the human brain is still the most versatile virtual creation center in our universe. Most of what the nervous system does is unconscious—we are aware of only a tiny fraction. But our customs official this time was totally different. He smiled at us right away and said, “Welcome Home!â€? He looked at my passport and said, “You should have been called Rejoice.â€? Then he gave us our passports and said, “Hope you have a good evening and enjoy your time at home.â€? It just took him seconds to bring kindness to a situation that can be quite tense. His kindness (and humor) made all the difference to us and I am sure to the passengers that were lucky enough to be in his line. As we walked away, we glanced back to see a cute elderly couple approach this customs agent. We heard him call out to the woman, “Is that man bothering you?â€? Perhaps we could bring back the Random Acts of Kindness movement and take a few seconds throughout our busy days to be kind to others. A smile, a word of appreciation, a simple act of caring and helping can make a very big difference to others. by Megan Montero ary is a massage practitioner who contacted me for a Feng Shui consultation. She had been volunteering her massage services to people with cancer, but these clients were continually canceling at the last minute or simply not showing up for the appointment. Mary loved being a helpful person by volunteering, but she was feeling frustrated with the lack of consideration for her time. The beauty in giving was becoming a burden. Mary lives in a small cottage that she loves and keeps in good order. Her home has only one closet so she creatively made a closet for her broom, vacuum and other household items by using a screen next to the refrigerator. The placement of the screened in closet was too close to the front door, disrupting the flow of energy coming into her house and creating a block in the Helpful People and Travel area of her home. The

ayurveda

position of Mary’s makeshift closet directly corresponded to her trouble with clients canceling and not showing up for appointments. I suggested that she remove her screened closet and get more creative about finding homes for these essential household items. The results of this small change were profound. Mary’s massage clients stopped canceling. And about a month after removing the screen, she took a volunteer position with a nonprofit magazine published by her spiritual community. What began as a small job helping with subscriptions eventually grew into a creative position writing articles and doing interviews. Mary found great joy interviewing people and writing. She loved that her job paid her expenses to travel, sometimes even out of the country. She had felt a longing to travel and to be more involved with a community-minded project and now she was going all expenses paid! It was a huge gift and really a dream

mony and balance in life? Can I adjust to the physical, emotional and psychic factors of modern life? Each of us has faced these questions in our life. Often we find only tentative answers or wisps of images that lead us more firmly on the road to fulfilling our potential. For many people, the teachings of Yoga and Ayurveda are becoming beacons of light on the path of this process of self-development. Both these sciences developed alongside one another in ancient India. Both address the human challenges that we experience during our life. Yoga addresses the needs of the bhogi, the soul separated from its divine nature. Ayurveda addresses the needs of the rogi, the person suffering from ill-health or sickness. The integration of Yoga and Ayurveda is emerging as the holistic paradigm that incorporates the fullness of the Vedic tradition. All this knowledge is now flowing through our lives into the stream of modern life. The idea of selfimprovement and taking responsibility for our own life directions, our own health, well-being and happiness, is very much in the spirit of the American experiment. The reconciliation of ancient wisdom and modern science —the balancing of our inner life and

aspirations with the external environment—are very much at the cutting edge of today’s world. At Mount Madonna, the collective study of Ayurveda and Yoga begins with Baba Hari Dass, who planted the seeds nearly 40 years ago. His teachings of Yoga and Ayurveda have provided wisdom and guidance for countless students over the years, and Mount Madonna continues to provide a place for these ancient teachings to come to life. Mount Madonna is a place of practice that supports education, yoga, Ayurveda, as well as individuals within community. And the basic theme of education at Mount Madonna is the translation into contemporary American society of ancient wisdom traditions that teach how to actualize human potential. We do this through the understanding of the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga, that teach us to avoid bad actions, cultivate good actions, discipline the physical body, expend our life energy through breath control, withdraw our mind from the senses, concentrate the mind on the sacred, meditate deeply on the divine, and become entranced with truth. This transition is also accomPage 27 plished thru the

come true for her. Eventually she was given a stipend for her work in the magazine. Mary’s experience with moving her makeshift closet is a profound example of how one small change in your home can help bring about a positive change in your life. Feng Shui Tip: Pay attention to the area in front of doorways. Keep the pathway in front of your doors clear. If you are not sure if there is room for something, move it for a week and notice the difference in how the space feels. Successful People Turn to Chaldean Numerology for Answers

by Joanne Justis any successful people have discovered an ancient method for obtaining valuable information that is nontraditional in nature due to the fact that this has been a well-kept secret dating back to 4004 BCE. With that being said what a surprise if the world knew that a mathematical formula existed based on sound and phonics that was developed to decode the alphabet for the purpose of extracting information true to the core. This was a legacy handed down to us by brilliant scholars who were well beyond their years in what they knew, leaving us with a wealth of information so powerful, it’s simply magic or rather, beyond magic. Chaldean Numerology is a proven ancient science that deals with the significance of numbers, and how the vibrational patterns or energy frequencies contained within numbers can influence your life and your future. Numbers define order and structure and are measurable and predictable allowing us to see beyond the veil of the external world to understand both the divine design of our lives and who we are as earthly personalities in this incarnation. The numbers of your name and birthdate can show you a design and blueprint that reveals the full potential your life holds, and describe both the possibilities that are available to you and the choices that can lead to your

greatest success. This information gives you options for controlling changes in your life and helping to discover how Numerology gives you insight and clarity for making better choices.

By promoting Chaldean Numerology, the intent is to initiate a renaissance, a revitalization, if you will, of a proven, ancient science left to us by mathematicians, philosophers, spiritual leaders, and scholars combined, and to reintroduce the correct system of numbers; thereby, challenging the validity of a bogus system still being used today. The Chaldean system of numbers is a very sophisticated method of decoding the alphabet. By converting letters into assigned numbers and then applying mathematical formulas, we can effectively produce in-depth answers, quickly and substantially in a magnitude of ways for personal

development. We wish to increase people’s awareness of Chaldean Numerology, from its beginnings, and to transform the modern perception of Chaldean Numerology as an ancient science into the understanding that Chaldean Numerology is a scientific process, and is as appropriate today as any other scientific endeavor. It will show people, that when faced with confusion and uncertainty, with questions that need to be answered, and with decisions and choices that must be made, they now have a no-nonsense source of information available to them. Chaldean Numerology is way beyond any self-help tool available on the market today—a proven fact through years of feedback and case studies. This system will provide you with amazingly reliable, accurate and revealing information to help you make better decisions for taking action when faced with rapidly changing experiences. Somehow all 3 pieces, which thoughts and ideas of this Summers pierced the man completely through, travels, I would have to say that there missed all vital arteries and organs emerged a common theme among as well as his spine, even though he contemplators I met. The one thing we often all agreed on is that life is a miracle. Oh sure, that’s easy to say. You can find such sayings on buttons, bumper stickers and greeting cards. However, I invite you to take this one statement to heart and contemplate it. What I am proposing is that all life is a miracle, meaning there is nothing that is not. That it either “all is” or it “all isn’t.” Get me now? What I am

“The one thing we often all agree on is that life is a miracle.” saying is that we can’t offer Pasquale Buzzelli’s amazing 22 story ride to ground zero as a miracle, and that you pouring tea in the safety of your own kitchen is not. For us to exist at any given moment and have the experience we are having (like it or not), there are billions of factors involved (most of which are completely unknown to us). What if the spin, movement of the Earth, Sun, Moon and Stars has a say in what we experience? We can see the Moon influences great bodies of water, why then would we have difficulty in accepting that all objects in space effect us in some manner? This is not a conversation about astrology. It is an exploration in relatedness or connection. One thing that dawned on me over and again this Summer is that the more time I took to look into the true nature of things, the less I found that things exist the way I first perceive them to be. For instance, as I stared at the beauty of the mountains of Ladakh, at first I thought, what an outrageous range to behold; these mountains are spectacular. Upon further study I realized that a mountain does not exist solely on it’s own accord. It is made up of rock, earth and metals and that there are veins and layers of different kinds of aggregates. If I were to separate any of these out, I could not say this sand is a mountain or that rock is a mountain. Only when I put them all together could I identify the mountain. I was recently given an opportunity to teach devotional music to kindergarten through fifth grade

at a local Santa Cruz school. I had knowledge that their curriculum covers learning about Saints. So I asked; who here knows what unconditional love is? One boy, about 8 years old, put his hand up and said, “It is love that will never be broken.” Really! I wish I had had such an understanding when I was 8! I replied, “What if a Saint is simply someone who loves so well and so powerfully that no matter what difficult circumstance in which they find themselves in life, their love will not break?” Now, in the tradition I grew up with, a Saint is a rare person who lived long ago and is especially touched by God/Spirit. What if a Saint is a normal someone, like you or me, who takes the time to investigate life, understand it’s true nature, gets that it’s an outrageous miracle and chooses to celebrate that miracle by powerfully loving no matter if they like the circumstance they are faced with or not? What if you and I can attain the power of unconditional love just because we want to? Would it be a lot of work to weed out all the parts of us that are “What if a Saint is a normal someone like you or me…?” not that? You bet. Would it be a lot of labor to study love and learn how to love well? For sure. What if Saints are people who choose to do the work, and it is as simple as a choice? If this is true, then what will you choose? Christopher Love is a free-lance writer and educator who welcomes comments at: ChristopherLove@ LivingDevotion.org.

by Joy Binah ur fast-paced, over-stressed lives often prevent our inclination to look deeper into what’s really going on with our food choices. The food industry manufactures products that are riddled with unhealthy salt, sugar, fats and toxic chemicals, for the sole purpose of addicting you to their products.

For the majority of Americans, a meal is some form of processed food heated in the microwave. There is solid proof now that the consequences of that choice are detrimental in both the short term and certainly the long run, compromising the immune system and creating fertile ground for a host of diseases and disorders. The time has come to see clearly how corporations are profiting from our ignorance, as we behave like sheep being led to slaughter. Uninformed, we are digging our graves with our forks. The innate wisdom of our bodies—when given the proper nutrients found in simple, whole, organic foods—will spring into action and support a balance that facilitates healing naturally. The time has come to reclaim this inner wisdom and nurture this innate ability to maintain optimum, vibrant health and to discover that food is the most powerful medicine on earth! We know for certain that the body has the ability to heal from most any disease when given the necessary nutrients to bring the body into a state of homeostasis, which is its natural inclination. Put simply, what this means is that we can reactivate the body’s natural healing mechanisms through what we eat. What’s on the end of our fork is actually more powerful than any pharmaceutical. How empowering is that! We are now blessed to be able to enjoy superfoods that have sustained entire cultures throughout the centuries. Because of this convenience, we can pack more nutrition in a single meal than most people will

I

eat in a week’s time! How great it feels to send your child off to school after eating a delicious breakfast that will easily sustain her throughout the day, regardless of what she might get her hands on in between (God forbid, a school lunch)! Nurture a desire to develop a relationship with these foods, relying on them as your “go- to” place for both nutrition and comfort. Comfort food has had, traditionally, nothing to do with nutrition. When we think of comfort food, it’s often some heavy starch and fat like macaroni and cheese. Why is that what we’re drawn to? Perhaps there are childhood memories involved, but perhaps it’s also because “comfort food” causes us to feel zoned out, disassociated with whatever was causing us the stress to desire them. Or, it’s simply a craving for a sugar load, or toxic chemicals contained in processed

healthy and strong body is the best defense against virus and sickness. With the change in seasons comes a greater vulnerability to becoming ill. Nights and mornings get colder, we may be surprised by sudden weather shifts and we spend more time indoors as it gets darker earlier. All of this creates a perfect storm of possibilities for virus and other airborne sickness to catch us off guard. But pathogens need a suitable host to make us sick and there is a lot we can do while we are healthy, to stay that way during these seasonal changes. People by nature are imbalanced and these transitions can exacerbate the imbalances in a person that are already there. The best time for us to do something to maintain our health and wellness is to take advantage of the different methods available to strengthen our immune system and bolster ourselves against these tiny invaders. Simple steps that help are within the reach of everyone. 1) Get enough sleep. A growing body of research indicates that we become more susceptible to illness when we are tired, as it lowers our defenses. 2) Eat right to stay well. 3) Be prepared for weather changes by bringing a rain coat, umbrella, a parka and a scarf along with you to prevent your body from suffering from wide temperature changes.

While these common sense measures help, boosting the immune system with herbs, supplements and acupuncture will also tonify the body, balancing the vital energy fields or Qi‘s (Chi) increasing our body’s resources to keep us healthy all year long. Traditional Oriental Medicine (TOM) is a holistic system of medicine that has developed an understanding of our body’s Qi (Chi) over several thousand years, applying a vast knowledge to keep

us healthy, helping us recover more quickly when we do get sick. Acupuncturists or TOM practitioners help us to manage these seasonal changes by evaluating the strength or weakness of our Qi (Chi) to assess what is needed to protect us against pathogens. They can determine our Qi (Chi) by testing our pulses. Unlike western medicine TOM uses over 30 pulses of the body as indicators of a person’s Qi (Chi). During the evaluation the practitioner uses the four major pulses and the look of one’s tongue to quickly discern the state of health. When we are ill, the body has an imbalance that an acupuncturist can decipher from rapid, slow, moderate, weak or strong pulses. Or they notice someone’s pulse may be bounding, floating, deep or occluded. We have all been told by the doctor to open our mouth and say AHHH, as they press down our tongue with a flat wooden depressor. How our tongue looks, the colors, shapes, whether there are cracks or swelling, veins distended, does it have raised prickles, what is the coat of the tongue, its dryness, wetness, etc. can tell a medical practitioner a great deal about our state of health and wellness.

Ones resistance to pathogens is increased with stronger Wei Qi (Chi), the defensive Qi. Weak Qi allows the pathogens to invade by a wind/heat attack or wind/cold attack. These are the pathways by which pathogens enter the body, through for example, your neck and face. So covering one’s neck with a scarf can help us to resist wind chill and maintain our body heat. Food is the greatest source of Gu Qi (chi), and our diet needs to be adjusted along with the seasons. As we come into the colder seasons we want to eat warmer food, rather than cooling foods like watermelon, which are bet better suited for warm weather. As seasons change we see foods with more warm colors, yellow veggies and squash in the markets, which are fortifying for the winter, full of vitamins, warming us, great in soups and stews. The winter season is a time of replenishing, where all of nature takes a break, plants shed their leaves and the roots become dormant during what traditional oriental medicine refers to as a Yin or rejuvenating time of year. Nature prepares for the more active Yang seasons, where there is greater energy from the sun and more outward expression by plants and animals. These are then natural ebb and flows of energy, which we must follow to maintain a healthy balance and harmony. This autumn, protect yourself from the colder weather and maintain your health throughout the winter by eating right, staying active, bundling up and getting an acupuncture treatment to boost your immune system. And if you should get sick, you will find that with traditional oriental medicine, you will recover faster and experience what people for thousands of years have learned can help them to stay healthy through every seasonal change. Come in for a complimentary consultation and pulse reading with the acupuncturist at Santa Cruz Core Fitness + Rehab to protect yourself and stay healthy. 831-425-9500 www. santacruzcore.com. 317 Potrero St., Ste C, Santa Cruz CA 95060

Rooted Mobility and Equilibrium of Force After over forty years of doing this art consistently without stopping I have touched the edge of mastery, brushed the tips of the burning Phoenix feathers before the flames consume it into creation. I am left with the bittersweet taste of burnt feathers and wanting more. I have become a happy novelty, an out layer. We live in a tricksters’ insanity and I am game to play as long as I am able, balancing the weight of worlds on a needle of perception. by Scott Ripke

Rooted mobility and equilibrium of force. When people think of weight training in today’s society, they generally have an image of brute weight lifting which targets a particular group of muscles. Over a long period of time, this form of training creates built in weaknesses in the overall connected structure of the body. Traditional Kung Fu approaches weight training as a form of weight management from a position of rooted mobility. As apposed to lifting or pushing extreme weight using simple movements, traditional Kung fu manages small weight in complex ways. An example of this approach can be done using a long eight foot curtain rod: Grab one end and lift it straight above your head, the opposite end pointing straight up. Standing with the feet together gradually move the arm and curtain rod from a vertical to horizontal position. Hold it horizontally for ten seconds and bring it back

up over the head. This is not weight lifting as much as weight management. To do this effectively, there needs to be a reciprocation of force or in other words an equilibrium of weight distribution. This requires proper alignment so that the waist, the back, inner muscles and tendons are connected from the ground to the Heavens. When managing small amounts of weight using complex movements release of tension is very important. If we use relaxation and fluidity in relation to the management of force rather than extreme tension, relaxed musculature in relation to bone density and tendon strength can be developed. By long continued practice of this form of weight training we develop strong, supple, fluid, relaxed movements that engage the whole body. This leads to the ability to manage extreme amounts of brute weight in surprisingly effective ways. In a traditional Kung Fu school, all weapons training is a form of weight training. The heaviness of a

weapon is always matched to the ability to manage it appropriately without violating the central equilibrium of the body. There are also other kinds of traditional weight training devises such as rings, (brass or iron) which can be worn on the forearms while practicing or small weights with handles similar to ‘Kettle Balls’. The method is always the same, whole body engagement with rooted mobility. My teachers always told me that Kung Fu can be used for self defense very effectively, but that it is a by-product of the art rather that its main function. The main purpose of a traditional way is the management of force; all types, all forms and temperaments. Scott Ripke, Green Forest Temple, www.GreenForestTemple.org (831) 688-6934.

by Janet Leonard ovember always reminds me to give thanks and to appreciate and be grateful for what I have, for what we all have, living here, in and around Santa Cruz. I am pleased and overwhelmed by all the talented musicians that live here and come here to play. We are indeed very fortunate all year long. Some music scene highlights: The Catalyst: Fri. Nov. 7th, The Smokers Club Tour starring Method Man & Redman, multi-platinum recording artists, one of the most legendary duos in hip-hop. Also starring B-Real (of Cypress Hill), Berner and Mick Jenkins. Wed. Nov. 26th, Santa Cruz locals, The Expendables, who have made it big playing California surf/rock blending reggae, punk rock, and 80’s style dueling guitar solos plus locals Ribsy’s Nickel. This show is 21+. Also Sat. Nov. 29th, The Expendables, Mod Sun and Pacific Dub. This show is 16+. Fri. Nov. 28th, Chris Rene, newly signed to Epic Records, the Santa Cruz-based rapper/singer/songwriter/ musician came in third place on The X Factor with his fusion of hip-hop and soul-pop plus Monikape and Ajg&Wattz. new unwrapped toy for this fabulous cause. Wed. Dec. 3rd, Sallie Ford is back and with an all girl four-piece band touring in support of her CD “Slap Back” her “ode to all the babe rockers.” Concerts in Retro: Here are my reviews of some recent shows. Remember this is only my opinion. At Seabright Brewery: Free Peoples played for Jeff’s “Moving Away to Hawaii Party” and my 50th Birthday! We had leis, glowing jewelry, flashing ice cubes and other party favors to set the mood. Free Peoples played their selfproclaimed “intergalactic Afro-cowboy world beat” but I think it’s a whole lot more, featuring very tasty saxophone/ flute/trumpet solos by Nick Hasty, adding a fresh sound, and guitarist and lead vocalist, Tim “Buzz” Sawyer, leading the band with his smooth, velvety voice. Terrie Londee and B-4 Dawn Band played on my favorite holiday, Halloween, to a big turn out of costumed attendees. There’s nothing like being incognito in your costumed alter ego to make you get up and shake your groove thing, especially to this high energy, hard-core R&B/funk/pop band! Are you a local band that would like your CD reviewed in this publication? Send your CD to Music Connection, c/o Janet Leonard, PO Box 3916, Santa Cruz, CA 95063. Call (831) 325-4605 or email janetfaplanet@ gmail.com to tell me about gigs for live reviews. Put “Music Connection” and your band’s name in the subject line.

L

by Noel Murphy ord Buckley was a one-of-akind master comedian/storyteller. His career spanned from the 1920’s Vaudeville Circus all the way to the late 1950’s Beat halls of The Hungry i & The Village Gate. No other spoken word performer could say his patrons ranged all the way from Al Capone to Jack Kerouac. Buckley took a millennium of oral history and fired it out of a cannon using the hip languages of Jazz, swing and bebop. Richard Buckley’s parents emigrated from England in the late 1800’s so it was no surprise that his stage persona turned royal order into an act. Buckley donned tails, a white bow tie and carnation and looked like he stepped out of a 1930’s café society film. What was a surprise was that out of his mouth came a great oral history in which the meek inherited the earth, the underdog found victory and all were raised up to the divine as beautiful. This became the evangelical call-response rant style he worked in. Buckley would blast words like Charlie Parker and Miles Davis firing notes in a furious jam... rants where all are royalty and are pulled upward with a storm of revival like an alarm clock from the divine. “Dig Infinity… and they dug it!” Shakespeare, Gandhi, Lincoln

The Music of the Spheres:

Astrological Insights by Susan Heinz Astrology

N

for

November 2014

ovember begins our fall into darkness. We are in transition as we move through the water sign Scorpio. During this time of year, we pull inward and experience our own inner layers of feeling and being. The Sun joins Saturn on the 18th. We feel the pull of Saturnian themes. How can we complete things, simplify our lives, bring more structure or discipline into our lives? Often we feel the oppression of obstruction and struggle with Saturn’s weight or demands. What Saturn really wants is quiet, and space to hear one’s interior reality, like a distant call. As Michael Meade writes, “Something ancient and wise keeps trying to catch up to us, but can only do so when we slow down enough and turn away from the manic rush at the surface of life. Turning back and looking inward allows the inner indigenous to catch up with our contemporary self…. This is Soul/ old mind connected to the depths of the Earth and the expanse of the Milky Way. It’s emboldened by the presence of love, and longings that remember the touch of the divine.” November 6 th is the full moon in Earthy Taurus. Now we balance intensity of feeling, with letting go, and cultivating calmness. What a challenge for the passionate Scorpio nature! On November 10th, Mars joins Pluto in Capricorn. World-wide events intensify, revolutionary expression strengthens and polarities grow. Personally, it is important to be clear as to what is needing to transform in our lives, and to channel this energy with intention. If things are breaking down, look toward new possibilities. Neptunian themes predominate while Neptune is stationary direct on the 15th. Like a siren’s call to leave our practical daily concerns, Neptune’s influence lures us into imaginative realms, states of daydream, even pulling us into denial and procrastination. Globally it calls attention to the plight of refugees and mysterious, hard to contain disease. If you are feeling overwhelmed, at the effect of life challenges, give yourself space from tension. Go into the waters to soothe your soul, be compassionate to yourself, and connect with an art form you love!

The Sun enters fiery Sagittarius on the 22nd, on the day of the new moon, shifting the energy into forward movement and joining with others for enjoyment and spirited communications. Twelve opportunities for November: For Sun and Rising Signs Aries (Mar 20-Apr 19): This is a time to be steady, persevere, and pace yourself to your goals. Patience is needed now along with the long view of things, as Mars in Capricorn challenges your fast moving Aries energy. You may feel more affected than usual by other’s emotions. A need for freedom and self expression is taking place. Let it support you through creative endeavors, or by releasing habituated ways of relating. Confidence can grow this month. Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): Issues in relationship, what your obligations are, what you want, and how you would like to be recognized in the larger community, now come on strong. Having clear intentions, knowing what you deeply value, steadies your forward movement. Quite a bit can be accomplished at this time. You may be in a process of letting go or disassembling things, and rebuilding or getting on with an important goal that was put aside. This is a time of stretching beyond where you have been. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): You now bring your attention to putting things in order. Gather up and limit scattered interests in order to perfect what it is you do. It may be difficult to gain a clear picture of your next career move or goal. Clarity and focus comes by the 3rd week of November. Relationships are highlighted on and after the New Moon on the 22nd. Take your time, because this is a more challenging time to read the people around you. Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 21): Relationships intensify in November. Your sensitivity is heightened. This is good to know as you can be alerted to the intensity that others are feeling and perhaps their unconscious actions. Schedule something fun in your life that includes movement, to keep your perspective and balance. Remain flexible at work as changes are afoot. Leo (Jul 22-Aug 22): Important home or family matters may be up this month for you. Take your time in sorting

through situations, as some things may not be clear at first. You are capable of hard work right now and getting things done! But don’t over do. This is a special time for you. You have begun something new that excites or inspires you. If not take a trip and open your perspectives. Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): Clear communication is a great need this month. You feel more intensely your own needs and can express yourself with much force now. You have the choice of exactly how you want to communicate. Relationships with others or one particular relationship may seem difficult to pin down, or to be able to deal with. This finds some resolve toward the end of the month. Creative endeavors are very highlighted. Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): Money matters are highlighted again this month. This is a good time to review your finances, and your sense of self reliance to create what you would like to manifest. Don’t limit yourself with fears of the future or negative feelings of what is possible. Simply see what your next goals are. Be aware of strong feelings being expressed in your home or family. Take some time before responding, otherwise difficulties develop. Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): This month, find a balance between your needs or desires, relationship with another, and work. It is important to have patience, as well as clarity of intentions. You can strongly and forcefully express your needs now. In fact, you can literally over power another, (or they could overpower you), Be thoughtful with siblings and neighbors right now. Being very clear about what you need at this time is a key to your success. Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 20): This month there is important completion occurring. There are also some situations that need to be brought to light so new levels of integration can take place. It is time for your busy Sagittarius spirit to regroup. Be aware that you are on the verge of something new coming into your life. Many changes are afoot. Be open to possibilities. Capricorn (Dec 21-Jan 19): As Mars enters Capricorn, you experience more energy. This is a time when you can successfully direct your will

Four years ago, I was battling cancer. Writing the book helped me survive a number of operations, and I’m not done yet... either with operations (one more to go) or with publishing this book. What are your personal myths, your deepest desires and motivating tendencies? What matters to you? How can you identify and realize your dreams? What limiting beliefs have been imposed; what blocks your way? The more we love and accept ourselves, the more we have to give others, the more capacity we have to receive blessings. Peace begins with each of us choosing to be and express all we can. Our paths are individual and potentially unlimited.” It is my hope and intention to teach from this guidebook and offer the opportunity to gather and research enlightenment through the wondrous map of consciousness that Tarot

provides. Let me know if you would be interested in such study and discussion, and I’ll keep you posted. Opening New Dimensions for Healing

by Miriam Jacobs, CMP, IPE, BFA ecently released, Tarot and the Chakras: Opening New Dimensions to Healers, is the explanation of the melding between Ta rot a nd othe r ancient systems, including Ayurveda and yoga. The book is an extension of the deck, Polarity Wellness Tarot that I also created out of the desire to integrate Tarot in my healing sessions. Polarity Therapy, the basis of my work, includes giving clients practices that they can continue on their own. “I discovered the connection between Tarot and the Chakras by examining charts. The charts helped me to remember and organize material so I could utilize the information.

R

I started to compare and contrast charts of Tarot, Chakras, and the Elements found in Polarity Therapy. Colors matched up with Elements and Elements matched up with the Tarot suits, and they all matched up to the Chakras. Eventually, I began creating my own charts. Tarot and Chakras are clearly bridged by the Elements. Astrology and Ayurveda fit in there as well. Tarot helps me to make personal choices and to see the underlying reasons behind events in my life. The readings helped focus my intuition and affirm my aim to get to the essence of what I am sensing. Lining up my Chakras in meditation helps me to ground and focus my own energy with efficiency. Incorporating the two systems in my life makes everything seem a lot easier. Tarot gives me meaning and Chakra meditations smooth the edges.” “Everything has a pattern, and once you see those patterns and their underlying systems, everything gets easier.” Exerts from: “Tarot and the Chakras: Opening New Dimensions to Healers” In the past decade, Tarot has taken on new meaning. Its connection to universal wisdom has helped Tarot to evolve into an empowering self-guidance tool. Tarot affirms our

inner knowing. I believe that everyone should have access to this wonderful system and connecting it to other universal systems does just that. Come explore the possibilities and learn how to integrate Tarot into your healing repertoire on Saturday, November 15th: 3pm to 5:30pm. In the Flow Healing Center 1651 A El Dorado Ave, Santa Cruz 95062 (corner of Capitola Rd.) Through bodywork sessions and tarot card readings, Miriam Jacobs teaches how to live more comfortably and self expressively in the world. Her work brings about a profoundly deep healing. A TEAM TO PLAY ON

I

by Susan Springfield ’ve never done online dating. I’m not really looking for a romantic partner. If anything, I’m always looking for a great team to play on. While others may fantasize about an intimate table for two, my heart sparks to the idea of collective collaboration with purpose. Listen up, Match.com, the next big thing might be making affinity group matches. “Destiny groups.” Can you see it? They’d be more specifi c than Meetups, with smaller groups based on compatibility, values and intention. Each group could have the perfect combination for success… just the right number of goal-oriented people, balanced by the process folks. Every group would need a few techies and there would be three hard workers for every visionary. Most importantly, there’d be matches in dedication and commitment.

This idea makes me smile. Is it so far-fetched? People love to watch teams work together in sports competitions. We love to watch groups of friends on TV. (Seinfeld, Friends and The Big Bang Theory.) Why not teams of friends with purpose? In his book, Coaching for Performance, John Whitmore lists qualities of an effective team: support, trust, patience, humor, compatibility, cooperation, adaptability, friendship, courage, enthusiasm. Add communication, creativity and spirituality and that would be my absolute bliss. Most teams are not so perfect and yet we make them work. I’ve been reminded of this lately as I have been sifting through a box of old photos and scrapbooks that chronicle the history of what is now The Center for Spiritual Living. (aka First Church of Religious Science and Center for Conscious Living.)

BHUTAN: WHAT IS HAPPINESS?

RARE MULTI-DAY VISIT TO SANTA CRUZ BY BUDDHIST MONK, VEN. KARMA NAMGYEL RINPOCHE FROM BHUTAN

V

by Antoinette Bauer en. Karma Rinpoche, from Bhutan, is offering a series of five events exploring the question in everyone’s heart—What is Happiness? with a special opening night event to introduce the small Himalayan country of Bhutan, land of Gross National Happiness (GNH). Developed as a blueprint for conscious development, GNH policies prioritize sustainable development, environmental protection, cultural preservation and good governance. Included will be speakers, traditional music, videos, photos and the Bhutanese feature film, Tharchin “The Liberated”. This classic and deeply spiritual tale follows two brothers growing up in Bhutan who choose two different lifestyles–one a modern life, the other a traditional path of a monk and yogi. Evening starts at 7pm, Friday, November 7, at the Louden Nelson Community Center Auditorium, 301 Center St., SC. The screening is a benefit for Karma Rinpoche’s 2015 Sutra Tour in which he will circumambulate the United States with the Buddha’s Sutras. Suggested Donation: $7-$20; no one turned away for lack of funds. In a special closing ceremony at noon on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, Ven. Karma Namgyel Rinpoche will honor veterans with a Black Hat Dance performed in spectacular full ritual dress. During this traditional Buddhist dance, Karma Rinpoche assumes the appearance of a spiritual warrior and dances a mandala with the step of a thunderbolt to imprint power on it and subdue negativity. Fiendish obstacles to peace disappear into emptiness. It is said that seeing the dance purifies mental obscurity, creating inner peace.

To be held at in the Abbott courtyard at MAH, the event is FREE (traditional offerings to Lama accepted) All are invited to these interfaith and intercultural events to experience healing blessings invoked by Karma Rinpoche. Rinpoche will also teach meditation techniques for a peaceful life, preside over a Buddha of Compassion empowerment, officiate a Chenresig Fire Ceremony for peace and rain, and is available for personal consultations and healing. Please see full schedule, below. Ven. Karma Namgyel Rinpoche: Events will be presided over by the Ven. Karma Namgyel Rinpoche from Bhutan, who will offer rituals and ceremonies from the sacred traditions of the Drukpa Kagyu and Nyingma Tibetan Buddhist lineages. Karma Rinpoche is founder and spiritual director of Drukpa Mila Centers, in Longmont, Colorado and Salem, Oregon. Note: Fees are to cover costs. Traditional offerings may be made directly to the Rinpoche. All are welcome and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Full schedule: • Friday, November 7, What is Happiness? Bhutanese Film: Tharchin “The Liberated”, Location: Louden Nelson Community Center, Auditorium, 301

The Center is having a 50th Anniversary Celebration on November 15th and a few of us are piecing together time lines, scanning photos and editing interviews for a video we intend to present as part of the evening’s entertainment. There is no one around to tell the beginning of the story but we can be sure that no computer matched up the four original women who formed a study group in 1957. They began meeting in the Spanish Room of the Palomar Hotel. The group grew and the following fifty years are marked by ministers who come and go, various meeting places and lots of building improvements. Attendance expands and decreases in some mysterious ebb and flow. The photos and time lines tell only a small part of the story. The fifty year history is the story of how ideas impact lives and how people can work together to build something they believe in. A few people have monuments built to honor their achievements. Others have tributes and plaques. Most of us live our lives connected to the people we care about and the ideas we believe in. We are deeply blessed if we find the organizations and teams that support us in living our values. Susan Springfield is a practitioner at the Center for Spiritual Living Santa Cruz, 1818 Felt Street.
