Hello
Inside
As I write this letter a new Prime Minister has just been sworn in and the last two weeks has been interesting to say the least! MPs going, some staying , some wanted to stay in the EU and some wanted us out and I can’t help thinking that the scriptwriters for Spitting Image would be having a field day with all the latest shenanigans! If you’re too young to know about Spitting Image, just do a search on YouTube. Of course it’s all very serious, so let’s hope it all works out eventually. As they say, a week is a long time in politics so who knows what the situation will be by the time this magazine lands on your door mat!

On a lighter note, although not so light on the waistline we have a Hokey Pokey Rocky Road recipe suggestion from Julie Walters no less on page 30. She is supporting the MacMillan Cancer Support charity and they very kindly let me use her recipe. You might like to make it if you’re hosting a Macmillan coffee morning on September 30th. For those of you who fancy a change, we have a great article all about volunteering. If we can’t feel good about the weather/politicians/Brexit (delete where appropriate) we can at least feel good about doing something to help others! I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer!
Sarah.

Home & Interiors Use Colour with Confidence
Katherine Sorrell outlines how you can employ paint to colour your home beautiful. Most of us are cautious about using colour, so how can we boost our colour confidence? Easy: arm yourself with a little knowledge and make the effort to experiment. You can always repaint if you don’t like the results. Start by leafing through as many interiors books and magazines as possible. A wealth of effort and experience has gone into producing room sets that work for all kinds of tastes. And, all the leading paint manufacturers produce colour cards, brochures that demonstrate how different shades can be put together, and interactive free apps: try Dulux’s Visualizer or Crown’s MyRoomPainter, for example. Consider the sizes of your rooms: pale colours, because they contain a lot of white, seem to recede, enhancing a feeling of spaciousness, while darker colours absorb light and therefore appear more enclosing. Similarly, ‘cool’ colours such as blue and green are more distancing than ‘warm’ colours such as red and
4
yellow. This is why people tend to use paler, cooler colours in small rooms, and white on low ceilings, reserving bolder or darker colours for large, bright rooms. But break the rules if you wish: perhaps use a dark, warm colour to make a small room feel welcoming and intimate. For practicality, paint those parts of the house that show the dirt (such as a busy hallway) in a darkish shade, and consider a high-gloss, washable surface finish, too. A simple, one-colour scheme is relatively easy to get right – provided you choose the right colour. Combining two or more can be more challenging, but hugely rewarding. Once you have narrowed down your choices and tried the apps, create a mood board of magazine cuttings and swatches, layering colours and textures to build a balanced palette. Buy tester pots of paints and get a feel for the colours by painting and sticking A4-sized pieces of paper to the walls you’re planning to paint, and see what they look like as the light changes through the day. Also, paint the inside of a cardboard box to see how the colour changes as the walls reflect off each other. If you don’t want a classic colour palette, look out for fashion-forward hues. Dulux’s colour of the year is Cherished Gold, an earthy metallic that works well with both fresh pastels and rich jewel tones, while Pantone’s colours of the year are Rose Quartz and a soft blue called Serenity. Crown’s autumn/winter palette is based around three looks: Out of the Dark, with black and
By Katherine Sorrell charcoal plus bright yellow, pink and orange dashes; Skyscapes, shades of blue with grey and chalky neutrals; and Faded Berries, deep berry tones with mossy and grassy greens. So, research, find your favourite style and either follow fashion or go your own way - colour possibilities are endless. NATURAL PAINTS
Natural paints are generally made using combinations of ingredients such as linseed oil, lime, turpentine, citrus oil, chalk and earth and mineral pigments. They allow walls to breathe, so moisture is not trapped beneath - useful if your house is slightly damp - and they don’t become statically charged, thus reducing the build-up of dust on painted surfaces (good for allergy sufferers). Because they are more flexible, they tend not to crack or flake. They use either fully renewable raw materials or those that are in plentiful supply, and energy waste during manufacture is kept to a minimum. Manufacturers claim they are just as effective as conventional paints – if not more so – and, what’s more, they smell nice! Brands include Earthborn, Lakeland, Auro, Nutshell, Aglaia, Pots of Paint and Eico.

Granite Transformations new showroom proves to be a success at Hatfield’s Granite Transformations the company ‘with the top that fits on top’ goes from strength to strength. Steven Leech and Darren Cribb announced the opening of their new showroom within Hatfield’s Furniture Showroom in Peartree Road, Stanway, Colchester at the beginning of February and opened the doors at the end of May, and what a success it has been. “We had predicted this would be a terrific move forward for us” said Steven. “It’s always a gamble when you do something like this. Many hours were spent designing the showroom but there is never a guarantee that what you design, people will like. The reaction from customers when they come in and see it is great to see. Our franchise is based in Ipswich & Colchester”. “We couldn’t thank Hatfield’s enough for this opportunity to have this concession, they have been brilliant”. “Our distinctive products are available for all budgets and we not only specialise in kitchen makeovers, we also offer replacement kitchen doors, full bespoke kitchen refits, along with bathroom makeovers and bedroom wardrobes”. Granite Transformations products are unique in that their range of surfaces are made from Italian granite, natural quartz or recycled glass. All materials are treated with a high-grade polymer resin to make them completely non-porous and heat, scratch and stain resistant. All come with a lifetime warranty. The range of products has something to suit every client, whether they are looking for kitchen worktops, splashbacks, up-stands or flooring. They also offer mosaic glass tiles that are also suitable for bathrooms. “Our surfaces are the hardest wearing worktops on the market, bar none. The sheets are engineered to be a flooring and has been used as a flooring since the 70’s, we source all the materials ourselves and make the sheets. We only have employed staff fitting the Granite, Quartz etc. These are all factors into why we
6
offer the life time warranty. Our growth over the past couple of years has indicated to me that we needed a bigger showroom. With the opening of our showroom within Hatfield’s of Stanway we feel we are perfectly positioned to offer the best possible service and products to our ever growing list of satisfied customers, both old and new. With the success of Hatfield’s we are now in the process of designing a new bigger showroom in Ipswich which will be opposite our existing showroom and plan to have that open sometime in November or December”. The worktops supplied by Granite Transformations are fitted directly over the top of existing surfaces, so there is no need to remove the old tops first, this means no mess, no fuss and a new kitchen the customer sits down for dinner on the day of installation. Over the past year and a half Granite Transformations have doubled their sales in replacement doors. They offer a door replacement service which can be from supply only to having just new doors or they can do a complete replacement service where they change all the panels, cornice, pelmet, plinths etc. Leaving just the units. Steven says “I believe this increase is due to the quality of doors. We offer four types of doors that are made to measure and come in over twenty colours and styles. We offer a six year warranty with the doors. This increase has also been helped by the increase on new kitchens. Full kitchens we offer a 3D cad design service. And all the units are made to measure and come colour matched giving you a bespoke kitchen without the big costs”. For a free, no obligation quotation, call Debbie on 01206 807229 for Hatfield’s or Harriet on 01473 851360 or pop into the new showroom at Hatfield’s, Peartree Road, Stanway or the Ipswich showroom. Salmon and Broccoli Quiche Serves 6
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus chilling and cooling
A rich and creamy quiche packed full of succulent salmon flakes and broccoli. Serve warm or cold with a crisp green leaf salad.
Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm loose-based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
Ingredients: • 250g shortcrust pastry • 300g salmon fillets
Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/ Gas 5.
• 200g small broccoli florets • 4 large eggs • 250ml double cream • 100ml milk • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Meanwhile, place the salmon fillets in a deep frying pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until just cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and leave until cold. Roughly flake the salmon discarding any skin and bones. Steam the broccoli florets for 1-2 minutes until almost tender.
• 50g Cheddar cheese, finely grated
TIP Replace the salmon with flaked smoked mackerel for a change of flavour and add a handful of fresh chopped dill or parsley to the egg mixture.
8
Place the flaked salmon and broccoli in the pastry case. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the double cream and milk. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
5
Gently pour the egg mixture over the filling then scatter over the grated cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

Holiday Reads For many of us, the best thing about a holiday is the opportunity to get lost in a book, without feeling guilty about unread emails, dirty dishes or the other 1001 daily chores that rudely interrupt our reading. If you’re looking for a novel to get lost in, we have plenty to recommend. Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet – H.P. Wood In 1904, the tavern beneath Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet has become a haven for the many ‘unusuals’ who call Coney Island their home. There’s Rosalind, who’s as likely to wear a suit as a dress, Zeph, who lost both his legs in a childhood accident, eight year old P-Ray, who never speaks and collects fleas, and any other number of characters. After finding herself alone and penniless, Kitty Hayward finds solace at Magruder’s, but her peace may well be short-lived. Anarchy is in the air, and the plague is sweeping through the streets. These characters will stay with you long after your holiday is over.
The Last of Us – Rob Ewing On a remote Scottish island, a pandemic has killed most of the population. There are no adults left. Just five children, trying to survive on the tinned food they find in neighbouring houses. There’s Rona, the narrator, along with little Alex and their leader, Elizabeth, who makes sure they brush their teeth and carry on with their school lessons. And then there’s Calum Ian and Duncan, who are starting to resent Elizabeth’s authority. A beautiful, heartwrenching story.
10
Dear Amy – Helen Callaghan When a newspaper agony aunt receives a letter claiming to be from a kidnapped girl, she assumes at first it’s a hoax. After all, Bethany Avery has been missing for years. But then more letters arrive, seemingly with information only the girl could know. Throw into the mix another recent abduction, and you have an enjoyable psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns, a great storyline and appealing characters. Woman on the Edge of Time – Marge Piercy It’s been four decades since the release of this classic feminist dystopian novel, yet the writing still feels just as original and relevant. Wife and mother Connie Ramos has been branded as mentally unstable and now lives alone, ostracised by most of society. She starts escaping to a future, happier time – where equality is accepted as the norm. But Connie is also shown an alternative future, where women are little more than commodities. Which one becomes reality may be down to Connie herself. If you’ve never read it, or worse, were made to analyse it for an English Literature class, now is the time
to pick up the 40th anniversary edition. Fishbowl – Bradley Somer All of life’s highs and lows are played out in one apartment block by its many inhabitants. There’s ‘the Villain Connor Radley’, ‘the Evil Seductress Faye’, ‘Stoic Jimenez’ and agoraphobic ‘Clare the Shutin’, amongst others. And then there’s Ian – a humble goldfish, who’s about to take a plunge from the twenty-seventh floor. In the four seconds it takes him to fall, he’ll discover more about the apartment’s inhabitants than perhaps they even know about themselves. Insightful, original and entertaining. Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All – Jonas Jonasson After three stints in prison for murder, Hitman Anders decides to go straight. Well, less crooked anyway. An unlikely alliance between the hitman, a lapsed priest and a hotel receptionist see the trio embark on a trek across Sweden, lying, cheating and swindling as they go. A great novel to escape into for fans of dark humour, it’s possibly best suited to villa holidays, or other locations where holidaymakers won’t get annoyed at your snorts of laughter.

Country Mutters Bang on....
By Lady Muck
We’re all guilty of ‘prevaricating about the bush’ - that kind of physical waffling where we find some incredibly pressing task like hunting down the elusive pair of that sock that’s been hanging about on the chest of drawers for 2 weeks now, in order to put off the thing that we really need to do but don’t want to. But it’s the verbal variety where I really excel. Husband might ask a simple question such as, ‘Do you want go and see The 70’s Throwback Band with me? I start off with the universal, ‘Could do’, then spend a good few days coming up with new responses like, ‘Well, actually I’m not feeling all that great – perhaps you’d better go on your own’, or ‘Gosh those tickets are a lot of money, aren’t they?’ When what I really want to say is ‘I’d rather cut off my own ears and hang them round my neck on a piece of string than subject myself to that God awful dirge, given the choice actually sweetheart.’ One thing we are all agreed on after Brexit is that none of us actually knew what the issues were, and worse, judging by the speed of their departure after the result, no-one who was supposed to know actually knew what they were either. Never has so much waffle been spoken than to hide this simple fact – it’s such a complicated issue that you might as well just close your eyes and put a cross wherever your pencil ends up on the ballot paper. I can waffle for England, but the thing is that it comes from a genuine desire not to offend. In my first job my boss made a comment on
12
my progress report ‘Needs to be more forthright.’ I suppose I did spend a lot of time humming and hah-ing like some sort of latterday Wooster when faced with awkward questions. Clearly the sort of ‘Well, I mean to say, what ho?’ type of response didn’t go down very well. But I was young and hadn’t learned the art of the convincing fudge. Nowadays I am adept with the ready, ‘I admire your passion for this idea’, masking the fact that it’s the worst idea I’ve ever heard. And of course, the tried and trusted “I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like it’ – only for the veteran, that one, as it has to be delivered with utter conviction to get away with it. Schools actually encourage the art of waffle, giving pupils endless self-evaluation tasks to complete. It’s not enough to respond to a question like, ‘How do you feel you could improve on your work?’ with a succinct, ‘Do it better.’ I know this because my son tried it once. Succinct = no marks. I admire the student whose work on product design I discovered in an idle moment one Parents Evening. It was a drawing of a stool annotated with the words, ‘I’ve made the seat of my stool this shape because it is the shape of an a**e.’ What could be simpler and more direct? I’d give him an A* immediately, without further ado, or indeed, protracted consideration of any sort.

Get stuck in...Volunteer! Was it really 4 years ago that we were celebrating the London Olympics? When we were carried along on a wave of achievement, optimism and goodwill? One of the most unexpected and successful aspects of the Games was that so many people from all walks of life came together to offer their time freely to make a difference, to create something truly great. If life feels more cynical, more confusing and less certain now, what better time to look to volunteering to re-capture that sense of community and to restore the feel-good factor? Amanda Findley is an Information, Advice and Guidance Officer with Colchester Community Voluntary Services. ‘I meet many people who are interested in volunteering. We use a website called Volunteer Essex which contains volunteer roles from charities and not for profit groups across the county. They are as varied as the groups they support – from tour guides to bakers, from Treasurers to manicurists. Many people are happy to self-register on the website and our role at CCVS is to facilitate contact between the potential volunteer and the group. We are also happy to meet individuals on a one to one basis to help track down the right role, taking into account their experience
14
and interests, how much time they can offer and when they are available – and it’s very rewarding when we make the perfect match. Volunteers are as diverse as the roles on offer. We see young people just at the end of their studies and in need of vocational experience to help them secure their first step on the career ladder. Many students are very focused and wise to the impact that volunteering can add to their CV, some need a little more persuading that ‘working for nothing’ is worthwhile. Far better than saying how dedicated and keen you are is the hard evidence of regular volunteering - actual proof to an employer that you will go the extra mile to secure your ideal job. We see people who have retired with time on their hands, people who ‘want to give something back’, or who want to support a cause close to their hearts.
Please mention The Connection when responding to adverts
But more and more we are seeing people at a crossroads in their lives. They may be recovering from mental or physical illness, they may be facing ‘empty nest syndrome’ or they have reached a crisis point where they know they need to make changes to their lives. Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity to try different experiences, to challenge themselves. The best placements are where the volunteer feels valued, where they can use their talents (or find ones they never knew they had) and give that person self-fulfillment and a new confidence. Sometimes it takes time and a couple of false starts to find the right role, but that’s OK – it’s your precious time you’re giving after all. We encourage volunteers to stay in touch with us and it’s fantastic to hear comments like, ‘I’ve made so many new friends’ or, ‘I feel part of the world again’.
people in our community who help to run activities for young people, to maintain our natural environment, to preserve our heritage, to drive older people to essential appointments, to raise millions of pounds to support people in desperate need of care. And if you’re thinking ‘Well I would, but I just don’t have the time’, volunteering doesn’t have to mean a full-on commitment. Even an hour spent chatting over a cup of tea once a week can make a huge difference to the life of someone who doesn’t have a single visitor from one week to the next. If you’re interested, get in touch – we’re always happy to help, or call in for a chat in Colchester library on the first floor at the top of the stairs every Wednesday morning 10.00am – 1.00pm.’
Volunteering is part of the glue which holds communities together. So when someone says ‘People used to just help each other’, I point them in the direction of Timebank, which enables ad hoc volunteering on a local level. Cutting someone’s grass or helping someone with their computer earns you time credits to spend on learning Spanish or getting your fence painted – and you might make friends in the process. I save the best till last. We support over 200 charities and non-profit groups, all of whom exist to make our world a better place and most of these simply wouldn’t be able to do that without volunteers –

‘Nature Deficit Disorder’? According to Dr John Blewitt, a specialist in Social Responsibility at Aston University in Birmingham, many of us are suffering from a new condition known as ‘nature deficit disorder’. Before you rush to google the symptoms, it may help to know that this isn’t a real medical condition, but a term coined to describe people who are cut off from the natural world. Research carried out by the charity Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) has revealed that a significant percentage of young adults aged between 16 and 23 are so divorced from nature they believe that eggs are made from wheat and don’t know that milk comes from a cow. In a timely intervention, Bristol Natural History Consortium, together with 14 partner organisations, has come up with a national initiative that promises to put us back in touch with the natural world. BioBlitz is a research programme that encourages ordinary people to become wildlife explorers for a day (find out more at www.bnhc. org.uk). However if 24 hours isn’t long enough to satisfy your curiosity about the natural world, never fear: you can go on to take part in a range of wildlife initiatives

that keep going all year round. Love our Ladybirds Go to www.ladybird-survey.org to find information about this much-loved insect. Ladybird research is important because of the recent invasion by the Harlequin Ladybird, which now threatens to overwhelm our native populations. Buy a mammal tunnel Ever wondered which small mammals pass through your garden at night, searching for food? Nottingham Trent University has come up with an ingenious way to detect the presence of hedgehogs, mice, shrews and other small creatures. The Footprint Tunnel is a noninvasive tool designed to help researchers identify the presence of animals by identifying their paw-prints, captured on special inked paper. A Footprint Tunnel kit is available from The Mammal Society at www.mammal.org.uk at a cost of £15.54 (including VAT). You can download a free, printable guide from the same site to help you identify different species from their paw-prints. By Kate McLelland

SOARING HIGH BRINGS THE JUNGLE TO KELVEDON INSTITUTE
Kelvedon Institute was the setting for Soaring High Primary School’s end of year production of The Jungle Book on Tuesday 12th July. The play was directed by Amy Jessop, drama teacher at Soaring High and a professionally trained performer herself. It was based on the Disney film of 1967. The set and colourful costumes were expertly designed by teacher, Helen Horton, creating a real jungle atmosphere. The Kelvedon Institute offers excellent facilities with sound and lighting equipment to further enhance the children’s performance. The play was beautifully narrated, and the lead roles including fierce Shere Khan, playful Mowgli, fun-loving Baloo and responsible Bagheera were confidently and energetically delivered by the children. In fact the stage featured a menagerie of animals, with vultures, elephants, monkeys and crocodiles all making an appearance. As Principal Sarah Rowledge noted, “The end of year production is an important date in Soaring High’s calendar. The children work
incredibly hard to learn their lines, the songs and dances. And what truly inspires the audience is that every single child in the school will participate in the play in some way. It is a wonderful way to develop their confidence and for the children to identify what their strengths and passions are. And of course, the children are ably supported throughout the process by our wonderful staff team. Huge thanks goes to everyone involved.” The Jungle Book was very well received by a delighted audience of parents, grandparents, friends and staff, and it seems the children enjoyed every minute.

Migraine is one of the WHO’s ‘most disabling lifetime conditions’. Yet it’s often poorly understood and trivialised. Migraine Awareness Week, from 4th–10th September, aims to change that. What is Migraine? Migraine isn’t ‘just a bad headache’. Suffered by three times as many women as men, it’s a complex set of symptoms often including headache, triggered by physiological changes yet with no known ‘cause’. However, triggers have been identified: • Stress or excitement – although some migraines start when stress is relieved. • Hunger/lack of food, causing fluctuating/low blood sugar levels. • Dehydration. • Sleep (too little or too much). • Change of routine. • Alcohol. • Caffeine. • Prolonged screen time – due to screen glare or flickering and muscle tension. • Hormonal changes in women. • Environmental factors – changes in temperature, humidity and altitude, loud noises, flickering or glaring lights, smells. • Jaw tension, coughing, unaccustomed exertion or illness. Most experts now discount tyramine, found in soft cheeses and wine, as a trigger.
28
Types and Symptoms Most common are: Migraine with aura (10-30% of migraines). Neurological symptoms occur first, usually lasting less than an hour, normally followed by a headache. Most common symptoms are tunnel vision, double vision, blind spots or temporary blindness, flashing lights and sparkling/ coloured spots, stars or zigzags. However, some people also experience weakness on one side or partial paralysis, dizziness, vertigo, numbness or tingling, disturbance to speech, hearing and memory, fear or confusion, and fainting, particularly if they suffer from migraine with brainstem aura and hemiplegic migraine, which are rare subtypes. Migraine without aura: (70-90% of migraines). Attacks usually last 4-72 hours if untreated. The headache is usually a throbbing pain, often on one side, which worsens on exertion. It’s frequently accompanied by nausea and sometimes vomiting, diarrhoea and light or sound sensitivity. Menstrual Migraine (usually without aura) affects fewer than 10% of women. Experts believe it’s triggered by falling oestrogen levels and/or prostaglandin release during the menstrual cycle. It normally occurs on the two days before, and the first three days during, a period, and often lasts longer than other types. Preventing Migraine Avoiding triggers, following a regular routine, and eating, sleeping and exercising healthily can help. Your GP may recommend preventative medications such as topiramate
and propranolol for severe and/ or frequent migraines. Treating Migraine Take medications swiftly, as the stomach often stops working effectively during a migraine. Try: • Over-the-counter painkillers. • From pharmacies: medications containing pain relief and an anti-emetic that alleviates nausea and vomiting and aids painkiller absorption. • From your GP: triptan medications, which reverse the blood vessel dilation thought to cause migraine. For menstrual migraine, ask about hormonal contraceptives, oestrogen supplements and mefenamic acid (an anti-inflammatory painkiller that can also alleviate heavy periods). • Botox injections – which may work by interrupting the pain feedback pathway to the brain. • Resting in a darkened room or having a nap. See Your GP if you’ve never had migraine before or suffer from migraine more than 5 days in a month, even if your pain is under control with medication. You may require a preventative medicine. Seek Emergency Medical Advice if you experience: • Paralysis or weakness in either arm or face. • Slurred/ garbled speech. • A sudden agonising headache. • Headache with a high temperature, stiff neck, mental confusion, seizures, double vision and rash. Plan Your Planting by Pippa Greenwood Although gardens are now looking a little tired, the drier soil means it is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring, as garden centres are starting to take delivery of bulbs which will get your garden looking fabulous early next year. Many bulbs start to put down roots at the end of summer and into autumn, so prompt planting is advisable, though tulips are best planted in October. Another option is mail order catalogues which have a bigger choice of bulbs, often including more unusual varieties. Time is of the essence, however, so send off for these as soon as possible so that you can choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before buying, decide where in the garden you can cram in a few bulbs. As they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, they can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year.
32
Many bulbs do well in containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be under-planted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots. If you are unsure which bulbs go together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and garden centres offer mixed selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. If you have a dull patch of lawn, brighten it up in the early months by planting some small bulbs. Crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t have much deteriorating foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of full-sized daffodils, but make sure you don’t want to mow the grass beneath these trees or shrubs regularly, as you can’t safely remove the leaves of the daffodils until at least six weeks after flowering. Check that bulbs are in good condition before you buy, avoiding any which show
even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or patches of bluish mould. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety. For large quantities of the same variety, buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. If you can’t plant your bulbs promptly, keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating. Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for Pippa’s ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ collection of vegetables for planting next month, a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, pull-out mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Beer Talk It’s the fashion among ale-drinkers to while away a hot August afternoon with a golden ale – you know, one of those modern pale ales that’s so overburdened with exotic hops that all you can taste is nettles. But for those of us who still believe that sunny afternoons were made for cricket not rock festivals, I have a couple of beery suggestions that are still refreshing and still hoppy, but less abrasive and altogether more mellow. Although founded in 1777, Dorset’s Badger Brewery has become a trailblazer in the bottled beer market, with an innovative range that is unafraid of ingredients like liquorice, ginger, and elderflower; and the moment you uncap a bottle of 4.5% alcohol Golden Glory, you know what’s in it: peach blossom. So – a fruity beer for that summer sundowner? Why not? The Belgians use loads of fruit, and they’re (supposedly) the best brewers in the world. Golden Glory pours an attractive dark gold with a thick foamy head. The nose is heady with peach to the exclusion of all else; on the palate, though, the peach is less pronounced. There’s still an overtone, but the more traditional malt comes through strongly, and then in the finish there’s what there ought to be – hop bitterness. St Peter’s Brewery of Suffolk celebrates its 20th birthday this year but has loads of history behind it. Its home is a moated Tudor farmhouse deep in a maze of lanes, which was built with bits of architectural salvage from the nearby priory, including an entire church window of intricatelycarved tracery. A truly unique place, and well worth a visit. Its huge bottled range includes grapefruit beer, honey beer, a stout, a porter, an IPA and many others; but in August we’ll try the Organic Ale at 4.5% alcohol. The beer is a dark gold colour, and there’s a hint of biscuity malt offset by lemony hops in the aroma. The mouth feel is smooth and creamy, with a palate that balances rich toffee, an overtone of marmalade, and just a suggestion of barley wine that makes the beer drink above its weight. The finish is all hop, though, long and dry and bitter, making it the perfect quencher for all that fine August weather I hope we’ll be getting.

What Exactly Is A Credit Score, And How Does It Impact On Your Life? Experian, Equifax, and Callcredit. Your credit rating is made up of various aspects of the information they hold about you, which is contained within your credit report. When you apply for credit or other types of borrowing, the lender will check your credit score to see if you are a good or bad risk. Your credit rating also comes into play in other situations, and has the potential to affect every aspect of your life. A low score means that you may have to pay an increased rate of interest to counteract the risk to a lender. This has massive implications if you’re trying to obtain a mortgage, as a poor credit rating can mean less product choice and higher monthly repayments. Even smaller financial outlays such as a new mobile phone contract involves a check on your credit file by the provider, so it’s a good idea to understand what constitutes your credit rating, and whether you can do anything to improve it in the future.
Credit reference agencies
Three main credit reference agencies exist in the UK –
38
Any County Court Judgements (CCJs) or other markers of insolvency/bankruptcy remain on your credit file for six years, so even though you can be discharged from bankruptcy in 12 months, the fact is evident on your report for a much longer period of time.
How is a credit score formulated?
A number between zero and 999 is used as a guide to lenders and other interested parties, such as landlords and utility companies, about your ability to repay. A high score translates to a low risk as far as they are concerned – in other words, the lower the score the more problems you could face. Scores between 721 and 999 are generally considered a lower risk, but there are other factors that influence your overall rating: • Your previous history of repayment. • How much credit is available to you. • The level of debt. • Whether any County Court
Judgements have been made against you for nonpayment, or if you have been made bankrupt in the past. • If you are on the electoral roll. • How many times you have applied for credit. • The length of time your bank account has been open. If you’re married or living with a partner and have a joint mortgage or loan, you’ll also see a financial link with this person. This can adversely affect your rating if they have experienced their own financial problems.
So how could a low credit score impact on your life?
Difficulty in getting a mortgage Even if you find a lender willing to offer you a mortgage, the interest rate will probably be much higher, and you won’t have access to the better deals. Having a low credit score is often an indication that you can’t afford a mortgage, but unfortunately it can also affect your ability to rent. Problems renting A landlord will check your credit score - if they see that payments have been missed or that you are not on the electoral role, they could view you as untrustworthy and an unnecessary risk. Personal loans and other finance

Obtaining car finance will be difficult if your credit score is low, as this is the main factor on which a lender bases their decision. It’s not only the large purchases that can be stifled, however – you may also encounter problems when trying to increase your bank overdraft or when requesting a higher limit on your credit card. Limited ways to pay Your credit report can impact on the way you pay for goods in shops. With so many store and reward cards now available, they are a popular way to amass points and enjoy reductions in-store. Again, your credit score will be checked if you apply for this type of card, and along with the information on your application form, will influence the company’s decision.
How to improve your credit score over time
that they amend your report, and add a comment against the entry to explain that it is incorrect. • If a spouse or partner has a poor credit score, you can apply for a financial disassociation.
• Make sure you’re on the electoral register, as a permanent address increases confidence that you’re trustworthy. • Pay at least the monthly minimum on your credit cards. • Cancel any unused credit cards appearing on your credit report - too much available credit adds to your risk from the lender’s viewpoint. • Check for mistakes on your credit report, with all three agencies – you can request
A good credit score can make your life more straightforward, so it’s worthwhile reviewing your credit report every so often to make sure that all the details are correct, and also to check for any suspicious activity. It’s possible to obtain a copy from any of the credit reference agencies for a few pounds.
If your credit rating is low, or you feel that it could be better, there are specific actions you can take to improve it over the long-term:
