Hello I will need to issue a bit of a warning here. You will not want to be going away in June or July because there’s just far too much going on locally! We have had over 70 community events sent to us for this issue. We have had to literally shoehorn them all into six pages - and I do mean it when I say ‘shoehorn’. It was quite a job to fit them in! We have 13 floral inspired events and lots of art exhibitions and open days. Plus, we also have events at Colchester Castle Park featured on page 23. There’s something for everyone - I promise! We’ve reviewed a lovely book for this issue which was brought to our attention by a local resident from Bures. You can read all about it on page 6. Finally - if you’re a keen cyclist and have some spare time, you might find the information on page 10 useful. National Bike Week is coming up in June and we have highlighted various initiatives including the charity Re-cycle. They are looking for volunteers to help at their premises in Colchester and at their new warehouse in Wormingford. Take a look - it might appeal to you.

Book Review ‘With Love’, by Gloria Geeve and Laura Ford. Commentary by Piers Ford Foreword by Ronald Blythe This is the story of the 1950’s observed through the letters of two sisters. For social historians the letters give a fascinating insight into post war Britain and the wider world but they also celebrate the minutiae of family life and the strong bonds of affection between the sisters. Laura Ford, formerly Head of English at Stoke-by-Nayland Middle School and Bures village correspondent for the Suffolk Free Press, grew up with her sister Gloria in suburban Ilford. Written in a compelling and lively style, the letters reveal the many challenges they face growing up in an austere society. Money, or lack of it, is a recurrent theme, with a constant flow of funds passed from one member of the family to the other according to whose need is greatest. Almost every purchase is a small triumph of budgeting, carefully itemised, hard won and celebrated. By the mid 1950’s the world away from 6
home is explored. Gloria takes a teaching post in Alexandria and her letters show the transition from the exciting life of the ex-pat to one of growing tension and peril as the Suez Crisis unfolds, itself neatly summed up by a remark from one of her pupils,‘We still love the Queen but we hate Eden.’ Laura also goes on to travel in America, her observations of booming consumerism acutely contrasting with life back home, although that life opens up as her career in a London publishing house takes off. The letters reveal how the sisters support and encourage each other as they forge lives and careers not with any heroic bluster, just through a series of small steps in education, hard work, travel and relationships. As Ronald Blythe writes in his foreword,‘We, the inheritors of this regular correspondence, are the benefactors. They admit us to a private realm that tells us much about our own existence and reminds some of us of what we ourselves saw and heard, but have long forgotten, and puts the record straight for those who have been taught to write-off the 1950s as a non-event.’ ‘With Love’ is published in paperback and as an ebook by Acorn Independent Press.

The Shabby Shed
I watched Lovejoy in the 80s, along with everyone else, and heard about the antique shops in Coggeshall, but by the time I moved here a couple of years ago they had nearly all disappeared. I’ve always been a collector of old and unusual objects (some would say a hoarder), and when I found the shed on West Street in Coggeshall, with car parking in front and a vineyard and restaurant almost next door, it seemed the ideal place for an antiques and curios shop. A lot of people would rather buy something unique with its own history for their home, than go to their nearest warehouse store and pay more money for something you have to build yourself and is the same as everyone else has. 8
The perception is that traditional antiques are prohibitively expensive, but tastes have changed in the antique world, and brown furniture and fine Victorian china are not the only options. Tastes are more eclectic, and there are some new kids on the block in the form of vintage kitchenalia and 1960s design items, as well as authentic “shabby chic” furniture from France. Believe it or not, taxidermy is also undergoing a revival! So, if you are looking for that special item to make an impact in your home, add a bit of nostalgia, or you just fancy coming along for a browse, we would love to see you at the Shabby Shed. Our prices start at just £5, so whatever your budget, you can find something interesting.

Re-cycle
Re-cycle is a small charity that takes thousands of unwanted bikes, parts and tools from the UK and sends them to trusted project partners in Africa. The donation of a bike can have far reaching benefits for many people. Cycling reduces the time spent walking miles to collect water or food or for a child to get to school. It makes access to healthcare easier and helps the economy of an area, either from training people to become bike mechanics or freeing up more time to be productive by reducing long, arduous journeys. Recycle have a dedicated team of volunteers but due to increased success and an upcoming relocation they are busier than ever and need more help. They are looking for people to help out in their Colchester warehouse and at their new warehouse in Wormingford. If you can help please call 01206 841268 or visit www.re-cycle.org
National Bike Week
For anyone who may need a bit of encouragement to get on your bike, this year’s National Bike Week falls on 14th - 22nd June and whether you’re interested in cycling for health, convenience or pleasure, there is plenty of local help and events to get you up and running. The splendidly titled ‘Colchester to Wivenhoe pootle’ is a bike ride which takes place on Thursday 19th June. Starting at Middleborough in Colchester at 6.00pm, the ride takes you on a 5 mile riverside route to the Black Buoy public house in Wivenhoe for food and drink (you are advised to book your own table) then back along the river cycle path after 9.00pm. Cycle Colchester
Cycle Colchester are working hard to make cycling around the town easier. Their website has route maps, advice on cycling safety and even a Cycling Centurion Treasure Trail which might give added incentive to younger children. For those who haven’t cycled for years or who haven’t yet learned, Cycle Champions work with groups, communities and clubs to give people the support and encouragement to get cycling.
CTC
CTC, the national cycling charity also has plenty of information and contacts for cycling groups so that you can explore new places by bike and perhaps make new friends in the process. Lots of friendly local groups meet regularly each week throughout the year.
Tour de France
Cycling was one of the many highlights of the 2012 Olympics and it is a great spectator sport. Some of the best cyclists in the world will be racing through Essex as part of the Tour de France and who knows - perhaps a young person who watches this event might be inspired to become the next Bradley Wiggins! Notice Board Pilates Based Exercise Classes
At Wormingford Community Education Centre, The Old School, Church Lane, Wormingford CO6 3AZ. We are planning to run Pilates based exercise classes lead by a Chartered Physiotherapist and commencing in September 2014. The classes will include some time discussing health education around subjects such as joint care as we age, how the body changes after menopause, application of relaxation and mindfulness. We will aim to promote an improved sense of well-being. There will be an opportunity for those with health concerns such as back pain to be assessed individually by the physiotherapist to establish their suitability for the classes prior to their commencement. It is our intention to tailor the classes according to the needs of those who would wish to attend. We would therefore like to invite anyone interested in attending the classes to drop in to the WCEC Open Day on Saturday 28th June between 10.00am 12.00 noon where you can find out more about our plans and make a contribution. For more information please call Amanda on 01206 337338 or email wcec12@ gmail.
West Bergholt Concert Band
Over the last 35 years, West Bergholt Concert Band has not only been at the forefront of promoting the performance of a wide range of music in the Colchester area, but has also raised more than £30,000 for local and national charities. At the March concert at The Westcliff Theatre, Clacton, it was with great pleasure that a cheque for just over £1,300 was presented to Chris Estall, one of the ambassadors for St Helena Hospice by the band’s conductor and
22
director of music, Graham Wilson and Katherine Cavender, leader of the Cavender Singers. This fantastic sum was raised at the joint Christmas concert by the two groups in December 2013. One of the main reasons for the foundation of the band by Sid Cooper in 1978 was to provide young brass and woodwind musicians with an opportunity to play great music alongside those with more experience; this continues today with open practices and a series of free music workshops at local schools. The band is keen to recruit new members who, in time, will fill the places left by those leaving. See What’s On pages for details of forthcoming concerts and for more information about the band please visit www.wbcb.org.uk.
Aldham Village Hall Update
Since the reopening of the hall I am pleased to report that our bookings have doubled. We are booked nearly every week day, with only a few slots on a Thursday afternoon and Friday to fill. Weekend bookings have also increased, as well as hire of the Meeting Room, which is a useful size for smaller meetings. Our fund raising is still continuing however. We need to build cupboards in the storeroom, resurface the car park in certain areas, replace the kitchen door and provide a further storage unit in the village hall grounds. To cover these costs, we estimate we have to raise at least another £10,000. We have several more fund raising events in the pipeline, so please keep an eye on the What’s On pages in future issues of the magazine. My grateful thanks to Sarah (Editor) for allowing me to keep readers informed of our
achievements over the past seven years, and to everyone who has supported our fund raising events. We hope you will still do so in the future. Anne Fulcher - Aldham Village Hall Fund Raising Committee

Walk on the Wild Side Coggeshall Triple
This editions walk contributed by Derek Keeble makes use of 3 walking trails to form a circular walk of just over 3.5 miles in and around the historic village of Coggeshall. At one point the walk crosses the river Blackwater by Dick Nunn’s bridge. Dick Nunn may well be one of the earliest campaigners for public rights of way, as he built and installed the bridge himself in 1892 in order to reopen a path that had fallen into disuse, due to the collapse of the earlier bridge. He was certainly a man who believed in direct action, once demolishing a cottage belonging to the lord of the manor because he believed it to be an eyesore which detracted from the neighbouring church. Possibly his most ambitious exploit was his attempt to reduce the level of the road at the top of Grange Hill with his own hands because he thought it was cruel to make animals pull heavy loads up the steep incline. It took arrest and imprisonment to dissuade him from his efforts. Hundreds of people turned out for his funeral in later years. So as you walk over his bridge, give a nod to Dick Nunn, a truly unique character. The map and description of the walk can be found at www.theconnectionmagazine.co.uk/category/magazinefeatures/walks/

Mussel & Potato Chowder Serves 4
Ready in 45 minutes This filling meal-in-a-bowl makes a lovely weekend supper that’s ready in less than an hour. Most supermarket fresh fish counters sell bags of fresh mussels all year round, but if they are unavailable you can use 2 x 500g packs of mussels in white wine sauce and just reduce the fish stock to 300ml and omit the white wine. First clean the mussels. Scrub under cold running water and discard any that are cracked or do not close when lightly tapped. Pull away the ‘beards’ from the sides of the shells. Place in a bowl and set aside.
Ingredients: • 1kg fresh mussels
Heat the oil and butter in a large deep saucepan or flameproof casserole. Add the shallots and fry gently for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and fry for 1-2 minutes then pour in the wine and cook for a further minute
• 1 tbsp olive oil • 15g butter • 4 shallots, peeled and finely chopped
Add the potatoes and stir well. Pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the crème fraiche and half the chopped parsley and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
• 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 100ml white wine • 2 baking potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks
Add the cleaned mussels to the pan and cover and cook for 3-4 minutes until the mussels have opened – discard any that remain closed.
• 350ml fish stock made with ½ stock cube
Ladle the chowder into warmed bowls and garnish with the rest of the parsley and more ground black pepper. Serve with warm ciabatta or sour dough bread.
• 200ml crème fraiche • 4 tbsp fresh chopped flat leaf parsley • Warm ciabatta or sour dough bread, to serve
28
TIP
For a spicy Thai-style chowder, add 1 deseeded and chopped red chilli to the fried shallots and 1 bruised stalk of lemon grass to the simmering liquid. Replace the crème fraiche with 150ml coconut milk and the chopped parsley with coriander. Serve with steamed jasmine rice.

Plotting a Vegetable Garden by Pippa Greenwood Even the smallest garden can find space to grow vegetables. Start now and you can enjoy delicious home-grown salads all summer long. Producing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time. And salad leaves grown in ornamental pots can be as decorative as they are nutritious. Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter, larger if possible. As salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune on compost. Ideally choose a good-quality multi-purpose compost, but you can get perfectly acceptable results with the contents of a growingbag. I find the quality of the compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but for the time you need it – and provided you keep it well-fertilised – it’ll be adequate.
30
If you grow your own salad leaves you can get precisely the mix you like best. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo, either a gorgeous bright-green standard Lollo a burgundytinged Lollo Rosso or a mixture of both. Treat them as cut-andcome-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, then they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer. Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient, too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the plant produce a root too. There are still plenty of tomato plants in the shops now, but hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. If you choose an outdoor variety it can be grown in a pot on its own, and if you have a big enough container you can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container. If you’re after some fire in your cooking, a chilli pepper thrives in a pot in a warm and very sheltered spot as do sweet peppers.
Fresh herbs can make a salad more interesting too. Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage, or even consider popping a few in with your main crops. Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun, so site your containers carefully. You want them to be easily accessible from the kitchen, but it’s more important to ensure they’re sheltered from the wind yet still get enough sun. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The garden containers will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the tastebuds. Visit Pippa’s website, www. pippagreenwood.com, for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’, the AskPippa Q&A service, Nemaslug, natural pest controls, and lots more.

Country Mutters Wheeler dealing......by Lady Muck
I reckon, in terms of hassle factor, buying a car is somewhere just above trying to find a bra that isn’t made of a fabric recycled from plastic bottles/doesn’t have a floral puce pattern/actually fits. There are similarities: there’s far too much choice, too many variables and you end up feeling stitched up like the proverbial kipper. The main hurdle is the shock of the new. It’s very difficult choosing a car based on a 2 minute test drive. You can’t go any further than that because there’s only a teaspoon of petrol in the tank in case you go mad and decide on impulse to take it to Hadrian’s Wall to see how it copes with hills. It’s like agreeing to get married after one blind date. The next problem is a difference of opinion between Husband and myself about which car to buy. He freely admits to car snobbery. As far as I can see, if it starts of a morning, hasn’t gone round the clock more than once, goes at least 3 days without needing to be filled up again and is in a colour that you can find in the supermarket car park, who cares about the badge? Husband carefully inspects each car we go to see, anxiously running his fingertips over the bodywork searching out blemishes. Why? I live in a rural area with narrow roads populated by other road users who have a relaxed attitude to speed and actually looking where they’re going. Sooner or later I’m going to end up in a hedge (if I’m lucky) resulting in a whole bunch of scratches. Why not embrace the inevitable?
32
One car (a nice shade of blue) was rejected out of hand because it was dirty and unkempt, which apparently means it’s not been looked after. Just because I didn’t lavish care and attention on my last car didn’t mean I didn’t love him. After all, I love my children but when they were little and fond of messing about outdoors they could go for weeks before I noticed that patch of shade under their chins was actually dirt. Having a full service history just means that the garage who knows the car also knows damn well that major things are due to go wrong just about now and have advised the current owner to offload it. You’ll get 5 miles down the road and the cam belt will go ping. Whatever a cam belt is. I only know you don’t want a broken one because it involves dismantling most of the car which takes an expensive team of mechanics a very long time to do. I mean, do car mechanics have luxury habits to keep up? Are they routinely bathing in asses milk and pouring champagne on their cornflakes of a morning? The man who sold you the car with ‘years left in it’ 10 minutes ago is now shaking his head and explaining that ‘it’s only to be expected from a car of this age’. As long as he accepts that a punch on the nose is only to be expected from a woman of this age.
