Hello
Inside
With Christmas around the corner we have an abundance of seasonal articles in this issue. You will not have any difficulty finding something to do as we have over forty events to choose from on the What’s On pages from Christmas tree festivals, pantos, fayres and farmer’s markets - something for everyone. On the subject of Christmas trees we have some tips on keeping them fresh and some general decorating ideas too on page 20. If Christmas is going to be a thrifty affair for you this year you might like to see what Lady Muck is up to on page 12 as she seems to have got it sussed with her onion chutney! I’ve always loved receiving and giving home-made foodie gifts at Christmas and on pages 28 and 29 you can find recipes for making mini Christmas cakes and gingerbread shapes - just like the ones on our front cover. Ladies, if you are looking for a nice posh frock for the festive season, why not take a trip to Coggeshall and visit Louise at Phoenix. They have a great selection - there’s more details about them on page 5. Also, you may like to get in touch with Zoe at Ruby Slippers. Zoe is based in Bures and she specialises in dress hire. There’s more on Ruby Slippers on page 9. I’d like to welcome all our new advertisers and wish them well - I hope you get lots of local support from our readers. From our newest advertisers to one of our oldest advertisers - Pippins in White Colne have been with us for seven years and have just celebrated their 20th year in business. What a great achievement! Well done to everyone at Pippins.

Pippins Nursery celebrates 20 years! And what changes since Pippins first opened its doors in September 1992 at Whites Farm, White Colne! Sally Scobie converted a redundant farm building to create a nursery for 2 ½ to 5 year olds. With just four children on the first morning session, it was a nerve wracking time.
A nursery is heavily reliant on its staff team and for over 20 years Pippins has benefited from the expertise of many excellent people who have played an important part in so many children’s lives. It now employs 18 staff and encourages the development of people wanting to train in Early Years. With outstanding Ofsted inspections and top accreditation by the Montessori Foundation, Pippins continues to flourish.
Happy Birthday Pippins!
The reputation at Pippins quickly grew and soon it was full with 20 children attending each morning. During the last 20 years Pippins has grown and adapted to meet the needs of modern families. In 2004, Anita Huckle joined Sally as a partner at Pippins and together they have expanded the business in order to utilise the peaceful rural setting. The nursery now offers full days as well as sessions and school days. Last March Baby Pippins was added in a beautiful barn opposite the original Pippins building. The baby room has proved to be very popular and parents are enrolling their babies before they are born! The wonderful views of the busy farmyard and orchards provide endless entertainment for the children. The introduction of home cooked daily lunches have been very popular with the children along with weekly swimming lessons for those who are interested. To date, almost 700 children have had their early years care and education provided by Pippins. And in many cases whole families have attended. Each child is special and the importance of early years care and learning has always been at the forefront of the ethos at Pippins along with a desire for continuous reflective practice.

Phoenix, Coggeshall
Louise Hodges took over Phoenix in Coggeshall 18 months ago and it is now a thriving boutique offering individual clothes with a personal service. Louise explains ‘I’ve always wanted to open my own shop because I was keen to offer something a little bit different. I like to sell high quality clothes with an edge so that people who come to me aren’t going to look the same as everyone else’. Her stock is mainly casual, with accessories such as jewellery, shoes and bags to provide a complete look. New in are the S Belt brand of jeans which are designed to give a flattering silhouette by disguising problem areas well-known to many 30-something ladies!
Phoenix has a high turnaround of stock, but Louise says ‘I don’t sell fashion which dates quickly. I think it’s better to have timeless clothes which suit your style - so you always have a wardrobe which works for you and you don’t have to buy new every season.’ Shopping at Phoenix is a much more relaxing experience than fighting through the crowds on the high street. You can come in to browse, have a coffee and there is even an area specially for men to sit and read while Louise and her staff are there to offer help with styling if needed. The personal touch extends to free alterations for clothes bought in the shop and with the 10% discount offer with the advert in this magazine, it is well worth a visit to look for that Christmas outfit you’ve been promising yourself.

We have now had our showroom open for a year already and would like to say a BIG thank you to all of you that have supported us so far. We have met some lovely people on this journey, all of whom have cemented the fact that opening a carpet and flooring shop in the village was just what was needed. We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and look forward to your continued support in 2013 and onwards. Chris and Sindy Tate. Excellent service and expert advice, wide selection of samples, more than satisfied with final product and installation. Would not hesitate to recommend. Lori & Matthew
It was such a pleasure to deal with a local company for whom the business actually matters and it was clear that Chris really cares about doing a good job. Matt & Nanette Gaskell The service we received from beginning to end was excellent, from the friendly and helpful advice when choosing our carpet from the showroom, to the fast and efficient service of the measuring and laying of our daughter’s super new bedroom carpet. All this just on our doorstep making life easy and convenient knowing also that you are supporting your local tradesman. Super!! Chris & Allison Baker

Do you need a gorgeous dress for a special event or party? With a wide range
of designer dresses in different styles, colours and sizes, Ruby Slippers provides a first class hire service, offering a wide range of dresses for formal occasions such as Balls, proms, cruises, black and white tie events, trips to the ballet and opera or even the Christmas party! Based at a beautiful riverside location in Bures, Zoe and her team will make sure you have a wonderful time choosing the right outfit for that special event. Zoe has lived with her family in Suffolk for over 20 years and launched Ruby Slippers Dress Hire in 2012, based on the idea that shopping for that special dress should be a pleasure. Zoe considers herself very fortunate as following the privilege of a catwalk appearance at the Grosvenor Hotel in London for Breast Cancer Care back in 2005 her ideas for a fashion business had to be put on hold as despite a double mastectomy the cancer returned. But now with a new head of hair back and with her mojo back, following a stint as an Olympic volunteer driver , Zoe is really back on form with this little gem of a business . A visit to the showroom is a real treat and some new and ex hire dresses are also available for purchase.

Businesses need liquidity to survive and grow and since the credit crunch there has been a mini boom in alternative lenders that are very quickly taking significant market share from the banks. Many small business owners go straight to their bank for finance and if they are unsuccessful, they may ask their accountant to help, and if the accountant cannot help they give up. By using an experienced specialist broker such as Liquidity Central, businesses and individuals can often find alternative solutions to their financial needs. Local property developers may not know there are joint venture schemes that enable them to build new homes without a large cash investment, and bridging lenders that could provide short term property loans within weeks. Small local businesses could obtain a loan based purely on their credit card receipts, and companies that invoice their customers could receive 90% of what they are owed immediately. Individuals with high value assets could receive cash purely based on the value of the asset, and businesses looking for commercial mortgages may be surprised at how low the rates are. So, if you own a business and are looking for funding for growth, finance to purchase or refinance a commercial property, an asset loan or a bridging loan, it could pay to give Liquidity Central a call.

Country Mutters
Christmas Lite...by Lady Muck
I’ve done my sums and it’s fair to say that however creative I am with the figures, Christmas this year will not be celebrated in the most lavish fashion ever. Clearly a bit of thrift and prudence is required, even if the very words make me feel like I’m sucking on a lemon. There’s not much I can do about the lengthening list of computer games, so that’s where the arm and leg will be allocated. Husband and I have agreed a challenge to spend a fiver on each other, with the stipulation that it has to be as inventive as possible. Not hard really - right now Ebay is offering a sealed empty packet of jelly babies, a box of plastic glow in the dark spiders or a pack of Saddam Hussein playing cards. I know - who wouldn’t love to receive any one of these? A couple of weeks ago I scandalised my friends by gleaning several pounds of onions from nearby fields - and no, I don’t mean ‘stole’, I mean ‘gleaned’ - a perfectly semilegitimate form of recovering good produce which the farmer chose not to pick up when harvesting and which would otherwise have been ploughed back in - OK? The fruits of my twilight labours shall be lovingly crafted into 2 dozen jars of onion chutney and handed out to my nearest and dearest. I’ve often thought we could break down festive fare into the bits that everyone actually eats. Trifle could be reduced to a blob of whipped cream and a chaser of sherry. As we finally sit down to eat Christmas dinner red-faced, scalded and weak-kneed after hours of exertion Auntie Joan has often cheerfully remarked that Christmas dinner is ‘just a bit of chicken, really’, so maybe this year we should call her bluff. We can certainly do away with the sprouts, stuffing and cranberry sauce. As for pudding, we can just set fire to a block of Viennetta and as it’s only me and the birds that eat Christmas cake, I could carefully ice an upside down empty cake tin. No-one would ever know there was no actual cake in there. Recycling presents is an obvious saving, as long

Please mention The
as you make sure to note down who gave you which present last year. Occasional lapses should be understood by the recipient as long as you have the decency to turn a blind eye to receiving the bargain box of synthetic guava bath salts you gave to someone else two years ago. Even the dodgy bottle of Asti Spumante you won in last year’s tombola can be your contribution to this year’s church fair. You’ll be rumbled by the eagle-eyed secretary because she donated it last year, but so what? She probably recycled it herself, judging by the many layers of left-over sticky tape underneath the ticket. And then there’s last year’s Christmas tree, still stubbornly un-biodegrading in a far corner of the garden. I could drag it out, give it a spray of silver paint, festoon it with tinsel and say I just fancied a bit of bling. Never mind, at least Christmas spirit won’t be in short supply. Pea Pod Burgundy, anyone?

Top tips for
Christmas Decorations Have your festive decorations lost their sparkle? Katherine Sorrell has some ideas to bring back your home’s Christmas cheer
Choose a theme Choosing a theme brings unity to the overall look. It should suit your house and the way your family celebrates the festive season, whether laid-back and relaxed, sophisticated or formal. For some, that might mean a traditional, living fir tree and a colour theme of red, green and gold. For others, a kitsch fake tree with fluorescent ornaments; or perhaps a minimal, modern style with pure silver and glass. Dress the tree Start by winding it with lights, making sure they’re evenly distributed. Next, drape your garlands, again aiming for evenness and an impression of generosity without overloading the tree. On small or slim trees, use slender garlands; on larger trees use heavier, fancier garlands. Last, hang your ornaments, with the largest first, filling in around them with smaller ones. Place some nearer the trunk for a sense of depth and interest. Hang a wreath For some, the making of a family wreath using foraged leaves, flowers, seeds, nuts and fruit is a significant part of the holiday season. Alternatively, ready-made examples are available in any style imaginable, from classic to contemporary, heart-shaped or circular, small or large, utterly simple or lavish and complex. Make some decorations Home-made Christmas decorations can be as elaborate or simple as you wish. Multicoloured paper chains are the ultimate in family favourites, as are cutwork paper stars and clove-studded oranges. How about pom pom snowmen, peg-doll angels or glitter-covered pine cones? Or mini stocking shapes cut out of felt and ginger biscuits to hang from the tree? It’s all great fun and will create happy memories for years to come. Wrap your presents Transform present-wrapping from a chore to a pleasure by taking a little extra time and trouble. When they’re piled under the tree

they will look so much better if they’re colourcoordinated and criss-crossed with ribbons and bows. Even brown paper or newsprint looks lovely if adorned with a home-made label, while sequins, feathers, glitter, stamped designs and wired beads can all provide additional allure. Sort out your cards It pays to establish a system as soon as the cards start arriving. Clear a shelf or two, and arrange them close together, large at the back and small at the front, in neat rows. Smaller cards can be tucked around a mirror or picture frame. An alternative is to staple them to ribbons (weighted by a bauble or pine cone) to hang in rows from a mantelpiece or along the side of the staircase. Create displays Nothing says Christmas like poinsettias in pots, scented candles on the mantelpiece and ivy, holly and mistletoe draped over every available surface. Now’s the time to dig out that special table runner and your best crockery, glassware and cutlery for an eye-catching table display, finished off with a dish, tray or platter filled with greenery, candles and other festive decorations.
Looking after your tree Buy a tree that’s as fresh as possible. As soon as possible, cut half an inch off the bottom of the trunk, to help it absorb water. Trim away low-down or interior branches that you don’t need. Put the tree in a stand that can hold plenty of water, and never let it run out. Avoid standing the tree in a sunny window or near a radiator.

Inventions Christmas Tree Lights There’s nothing that says ‘Christmas has arrived’ as much as a Christmas tree beautifully illuminated with lights. Some say that the tradition dates as far back as the 1600s when wealthy German families would decorate their trees with small candles held in place with pins or melted wax. Owing to the danger of fire however, the candles would only stay lit for several minutes at a time with home owners standing nervously by. Even after candle holders and lanterns became available, fires were common and insurance companies started refusing to pay claims. The solution was provided by a very wellknown name and its unveiling must be one
of the greatest publicity stunts of all time. In December 1880, in order to publicise his latest invention, Thomas Edison hung a string of electric lights around his laboratory in New Jersey. Passers-by were mesmerised by the beautiful display and associated it with yuletide celebrations. Two years later one of Edison’s inventors, Edward Johnson, lit a Christmas tree with 80 small bulbs and by 1900, Christmas displays with lights started appearing in department store windows. On Christmas Eve, 1923, President Coolidge lit the National Christmas Tree near the White House with 3,000 lights. A string of lights cost about $12 which put buying them way out of reach of ordinary American families. General Electric, who had purchased the rights to Edison’s bulbs, even released advertisements suggesting families rented them. It wasn’t until 1925 when the Sadacca family, who owned a novelty lighting business, started mass manufacturing Christmas lights, that they become affordable. Today you can take your pick of incandescent or LED lights. Either way, what a pleasure it is to light up your tree in these cold winter months. By Lauren Ford

Book Reviews
Christmas Goes Crackers If you’re fed up with your Uncle Jack’s unfunny one-liners this Christmas, why not retreat to a quiet corner and find a bit of comic relief away from the relatives. We have enough Christmas cheer to keep you laughing well into the New Year.
The Far Side Gallery 1 By Gary Larson If there’s any doubt that Gary Larson is some kind of comic genius, it was dispelled when they built a museum in San Francisco and filled it with his cartoons. Seeing the world through Larson’s eyes is viewing it through a pair of Dame Edna-style glasses. He finds the funny in the ordinary and I guarantee you’ll never look at cows and chickens in quite the same way again. The Far Side books can be passed from grandparents to parents to children and all will be equally tickled by Larson’s humour. Simon’s Cat Vs. The World! ‘Punch’ magazine may have closed its doors in 2002 but its legendary status lives on. This is the biggest collection of Punch cartoons ever and it’s one to be savoured. It’s essential reading for all fans of humour and satire, with no holds barred and nowhere safe to hide. The selection was made by Helen Walasek of the Punch Cartoon Library and it’s definitely to be treasured. With 600 of the best to flick through, you’d better avoid doing it in one sitting, or you might end up Punch drunk.
spirit of the nation in his own inimitable way. It’s a subtle mixture of wit and satire that will have you chuckling into your pudding. His almost haphazard drawing style is quirky and suggestive, making you feel like he’s capturing British life on the fly. A brilliant way to look back over the year.
Garfield Going for Gold Jim Davis Timed to coincide with London 2012, this special edition is one of the classic sports strips. He may have been around since the 70s but Davis’ furry antihero hasn’t grown out of taunting his owner with violence towards his canine counterpart, Odie and of laziness, gluttony, sarcasm and a hatred of Mondays. If you feel your life is not turning out quite as planned, this book might just be the best present you give to yourself this Christmas. 52 Ways to Transform Your Life. Weekly Wisdom for Busy People by Annabel Sutton As the title suggests, the book is structured into 52 sections, or Tips and gives a different focus of thought for each week of the year, beginning with a refreshingly different perspective on New Year Resolutions. If you can’t wait until the New Year begins, you can of course read it in one go or just dip into it as the subject headings catch your eye. In a readable, succinct and warm style, Annabel offers commonsense advice and practical strategies for change. She asks thoughtprovoking questions designed to make you look at yourself with fresh eyes and her insightful
suggestions tackle issues many of us struggle with, such as low self-esteem, lack of fulfillment or sustaining the motivation to achieve our goals. 52 Ways to Transform Your Life challenges the obstacles of negative thought we impose on ourselves: too busy, too tired, too far down the line. By taking it one step at a time, this book puts into your grasp the possibility of realising your dreams.

Volunteering - Show a little Christmas Spirit When we think about volunteering at Christmas, it’s often the image of the soup kitchen that springs to mind, but you may be surprised to learn that your help could be needed closer at home. Craig Last, Frontline Services Team Leader at Colchester Community Voluntary Services says, ‘Quite often it’s the people in our own communities just a few doors away who could really do with a bit of help. It could be something as simple as putting the bins out, but that 10 minutes a week could make all the difference, particularly if it’s icy outside’. Cold weather and limited daylight hours in the winter months can contribute to elderly people becoming isolated, so the offer of a lift may be much appreciated. More and more people now have computers which is a great way of staying in touch with the outside world in general and family
members who live far away, but elderly people sometimes need help with setting up and accessing social media sites. And as Christmas approaches, help with internet shopping can be much appreciated. Volunteering with a Time Bank means that for every hour you give to help others, you receive 1 time credit, which you can spend on the bank of skills available from other members, so you might earn help with the gardening or even be able to sign up for a Spanish lesson. If you’re interested, the best way to get started is to register with the CCVS Time Bank, where you may be asked for references and sometimes a crb check. Please visit www.ccvs.org contact timebank@ccvs.org or call 01206 505250 for more information.

Seasonal Recipes These delightful mini fruit and nut topped cakes and festive gingerbread biscuits are perfect for giving as a festive foodie present. Simply wrap in clear cellophane and tie with gold ribbon or place in small gift boxes.
Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas 2. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with a double thickness of greased, greaseproof paper. Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and cream together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Sift together the flour and spices then fold into the creamed mixture. Fold in the lemon zest, dried fruit, glace cherries and nuts and mix thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface. Use the back of a metal spoon to make a slight dip in the centre (this will help to give an even rise). Bake in the preheated oven for 3¼ - 3 ½ hours or until firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin. When the cake is completely cold, use a sharp knife to cut it into 9 smaller square cakes. Brush the sides of each cake with a little apricot jam. Divide the marzipan into 9 pieces. Dust a surface lightly with icing sugar and roll each piece out to a strip long enough to go around each cake. Wrap the strips around the cakes pinching the ends together to seal. Top each cake with a selection of cherries, nuts and apricots. Tie a ribbon around each cake if liked.

Stir the syrup mixture into the dry ingredients. Add enough milk for a stiff dough, cover with cling film and chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180˚C/350F/gas mark 4. Line 2 baking sheets with baking parchment. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 5mm thick. Using cutters, cut out Christmas shapes. Place on the baking sheets, then use a skewer to make a hole in each one if you want to hang them from the tree. Bake for 10 mins approx until lightly browned, then cool on a wire rack. Use writing icing in small squeezy tubes to decorate.

This advertisement for Samaritans has been placed in memory of Tom Holme who died in July. He left behind his wife Pippa and children David, Henry, Poppy and Simon.
Samaritans have reported that on average over 3000 middle aged men take their own lives each year in the UK. As a result of their findings they have launched a new campaign called Samaritans is a registered charity. ‘We’re in your Corner’. *Please see our website for latest call charges. This campaign is designed to raise awareness of the issue of men and suicide, encourage them to seek help and to understand why they are most at risk of suicide . “We would like to thank all the people who have supported Samaritans so generously following Tom’s death and hope that Samaritans continued help and support of all vulnerable people will save valuable lives”. This year’s traditional Boxing Day walk is about 5 miles long and takes in parts of the Stour Valley Path and the Essex Way, but also through the centre of Dedham, which always looks very festive at this time of year. The section along the banks of the River Stour may well be muddy, but the views should be well worth wrapping up the family in wellies and scarves. Most of us feel the need for some physical activity after the usual Christmas excesses and a walk gives the children the chance to let off some steam after the excitement of Christmas Day itself. The walk starts in Gun Hill, off the A12 near the Talbooth, and joins the Stour Valley Path along the river. Once in Dedham you pick up the Essex Way from the war memorial and return via Black Brook and Stratford Rd to where you started. Full instructions and a map for this walk can be downloaded from the excellent Colchester Ramblers site www.colchester-ramblers.co.uk/ keeble/gunhill041334074.pdf
