How are the new year resolutions going? Statistically they have usually been and gone by the end of January! But if you’re feeling inspired to give yourself a second kick start we have books to spur you on again on page 12. If you’re a gardener and the wintery weather is getting you down, maybe you would like to start looking ahead to Spring and think about possibly opening your garden to the public. The Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust are looking for people to open their gardens to raise money. It’s free to take part. See page 26 for more details and Coggeshall residents might also like to consider taking part in Coggeshall in Bloom. See page 29 if this appeals. Finally, we also have tips on making the most of tiny kitchens on page 14 and we have two lovely recipes. I hope you enjoy the February/March issue and I’ll see you soon!

Raining and Pouring! By Lady Muck
As I lie sleepless once again, the still watches of the night stretching out before me, it’s difficult to appreciate the shadows and moonbeams chasing each other across the wall, however silvered and ethereal their appearance. Difficult too to be comforted by the cries of owls and night creatures as we inhabit this secret world together. Why, you ask? What is the cause of my sleeplessness? The incessant jack-hammer of Husband’s snoring, that’s what. I say jack-hammer – that’s just one of the panoply of the sounds bouncing off our walls. The lovesick cat, the flapping fence panel, the rootling pig and the obstructed pipe are just a small selection of the enormous variety of snoring style. The problem is the pillows, he says, and sets about some complicated rearrangement resulting in a Mont Blanc styled affair, down which he slowly subsides, snores sliding down the scale, until he reaches the foothills, whereupon the whole thing collapses on top of him and he wakes me up with accusations of attempted suffocation. Because all this is my fault, you see. For making him eat that pudding with the extra dollop of cream, for making him drink that last beer, for making him watch the late film so that he’s too full, half cut and over-tired. If only any of this was the root cause. Admittedly, any of these things make the performance more orchestrally spectacular but the ordinary, every day workaday snore is just as bad. It’s like the dripping tap you think you can live with. Just as you’re dropping off to a noise which is at least measured and regular, he’ll drop in a digeridoo fanfare just to keep you on your toes.
4
In the early days of our relationship, I used to stroke him gently on the arm and whisper lovingly, ‘Lie on your side,’ and he would roll over obediently. Over the years he’s learned to ignore instructions in his sleep as well as in waking hours. Worse still, he actually tells lies in his sleep. Now when I tell him to lie on his side he says ‘I am lying on my side’. The sounds continue unabated. That’s funny, I think, it sounds like he’s lying on his back. I grab my mobile, turn it on and shine the light in his direction and see that he is indeed lying on his back. I give him a strong shove, which turns him over and wakes him up properly in the process. Good. The latest development is the complete state of denial. When all kicks, shoves and pokes fail and I resort to snarling, ‘Stop snoring,’ he replies immediately and reproachfully, ‘But I’m awake.’ Then he tells me how he’s deliberately staying awake so that he doesn’t start snoring and how he’s doing everything in his power not to disturb me. I tell him I appreciate the thought but wonder how he can be awake and snoring his head off at the same time. “Perhaps you’re dreaming’’, he suggests helpfully. Chance would be a fine thing.

Kitchen Transformations Grows into new showroom Granite Transformations the company “with the top that fits on top” goes from strength to strength. Steven Leech and Darren Cribb who were recently awarded the prestigious Franchisee of the Year award from Sarah Beeny at the Granite Transformations annual Meeting are now pleased to announce their new showroom within Hatfields Furniture Showroom in Peartree Road, Stanway, Colchester. This is a terrific move forward for us said Steven as our franchise is for Colchester and this is the first showroom we have had in the main township of Colchester. Our previous showroom at West Mersea was a few miles outside and became clear to us would not be suitable for our future needs. We are very pleased to have been given the opportunity for the concession within Hatfields, given their trading heritage since 1886. I feel this is a reflection on the quality that our company has to offer to their customers. At the same time this will allow us to seek a wider customer spectrum. Our distinctive products are available for all budgets and we not only specialise in kitchen makeovers but we also offer replacement kitchen doors, full, bespoke, kitchen refits along with bathroom makeovers and bedroom wardrobes.
something to suit every client, whether they are looking for kitchen worktops, splashbacks, upstands or flooring. We also offer mosaic glass tiles that are also suitable for bathrooms. We would not be offering a lifetime warranty if we weren’t absolutely certain that these materials are the best money can buy. Our surfaces are the hardest wearing worktops on the market, bar none. Our growth over the past couple of years has seen our Ipswich showroom double in size and now with the opening of our showroom within Hatfields of Stanway we feel we are perfectly positioned to offer the best possible service and products to our ever growing list of satisfied customer, both old and new. Our worktops are fitted directly over the top of existing surfaces, so there is no need to remove the old tops first, this means no mess, no fuss and a new kitchen the customer sits down for dinner on the day of installation. We have also seen a large increase in demand for our unique products which include floors, replacement kitchen doors, full replacement kitchens, bathrooms and bedroom wardrobes. For a free, no obligation quotation, call Steven Leech on 01473 851360 or 01206 807229 or pop into the new showroom at Hatfields, Peartree Road, Stanway.
Our Granite Transformations products are unique in that our range of surfaces are made from Italian granite, natural quartz or recycled glass. All materials are treated with a high-grade polymer resin to make them completely non-porous and heat, scratch and stain resistant. All come with a lifetime warranty. The range of products has

Cake and Bake Iced Orange Bundt Cake This delicious citrus flavoured sponge is made in a classic ring-shaped bundt tin. You’ll find them in most good cook shops and larger supermarkets, or you can use an ordinary 1.5L capacity ring mould tin instead.
Ingredients: • 300g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting
• 200g caster sugar • 3 large eggs, beaten • 1/2 tsp baking powder • Finely grated zest of 1 large orange
• 100ml fresh orange juice • 100-150ml milk
FOR THE ICING • 100g icing sugar • Approx 2 tbsp fresh orange juice
Serves 10 Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus cooling and setting times
8
1. Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Thoroughly
grease a 22-23cm Bundt tin (measured across the top) with butter then lightly dust with flour, tipping out the excess.
2. Put the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat
together until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs, then sift over the flour and baking powder and fold in along with the orange zest and juice. Fold in enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency.
3. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared tin and gently
level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes, or until the cake is risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes then carefully turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.
4. For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl then beat
in the orange juice to make a smooth and thick icing. Drizzle the icing over the top of the cake, letting it drizzle down the sides. Leave in a cool place until set.
TIP
Make sure to grease and flour the bundt tin thoroughly or you may find it tricky to turn the cake out. Use the tip of a small palette knife or silicon spatula to gently loosen the edges of the cake first.

Once again rated as Ofsted Outstanding in all areas in the latest December 2015 inspection Absolute Angels Montessori Nursery provides a wonderful and inspiring pre-school education for all 2-5 year olds. Now open 8am – 6pm with funded sessions available. Set in the beautiful historic village of Coggeshall it is easily accessible from a variety of villages and towns including Tiptree, Feering, Earls Colne and Braintree. The nursery is based in an old Church and offers the space both indoors and outdoors for children to learn, play and develop. Montessori education was pioneered by Maria Montessori who focused on a child’s desire to learn and their enormous capacity to do so when provided with the right environment and the appropriate materials under the guidance of a watchful, compassionate teacher. Absolute Angels have a high staff to child ratio. Each child is individually planned for so that they can progress and learn at their own pace. Emphasis is placed on giving children space to roam and our weekly forest school inspires them in the 200 acre setting of Marks Hall. Many children from our nursery have gone on to continue their Montessori education at Soaring High Montessori Primary School. On leaving the nursery parents have been delighted with their
child’s progress including comments such as “my child has become a selfsufficient and confident learner” and “consistently amazing care”. We are very proud of our nursery, please call Julie on 01376 562 000 to book a time to visit us. www.coggeshallmontessori.co.uk

New Beginnings In need of a change in 2016? Whether you want to alter your life’s direction, go travelling, or just be a bit healthier, sometimes you need a little inspiration before you take the plunge. This issue’s selection of books features new adventures, new thinking and everyday acts of courage that might well offer just the motivation you need. The Soup Cleanse – Angela Blatteis and Vivienne Vella If you’re still feeling the effects of a Christmas of excess, a detox could help you get back on track. Soups are a great way to get the nutrition you need, while cutting out the ‘junk’. They’re also far more filling than juices, so won’t leave you feeling hungry, and they can be prepared ahead in batches, so work well if you don’t always have time to cook fresh food from scratch. With several detox programmes to choose from, and some truly delicious recipes, The Soup Cleanse could help you to kickstart a healthier 2016. No Baggage – Clara Bensen A travel memoir with a difference, No Baggage sees Clara travelling through Europe with a man she’s only recently met, no luggage and no fixed plans for where to stay. She’s also only recently overcome the depression that stole two years of her life. Sleeping mainly on strangers’ sofas, the pair get to experience a different side of the countries they visit, and learn more about themselves, and each other, as they go.
12
One Million Lovely Letters – Jodi Ann Bickley A serious brain infection at 22 left Jodi Ann Bickley so depressed she was close to ending her own life. While relearning to walk and do basic everyday tasks, Jodi decided to bring hope to other people’s lives by writing letters to strangers. She ended up writing thousands, and now has a team of volunteers, who handwrite letters to people who request them, all over the globe. The Year Without a Purchase – Scott Dannemiller Tired of the relentless drive for more ‘stuff’, Scott and Gaby Dannemiller decided to take a step away from consumerism and commit to a year without buying anything other than food and other essentials. This book records their experience and what they learned along the way. The couple are Christian and their religious beliefs played a big part in their decision, as did the desire to spend more meaningful time together as a family. Far from being a selfrighteous lecture, it’s laugh out loud funny, and manages to make you think about your own spending habits, without a hint of nagging.
Take Your Soul to Work – Erica Brown Whether you’re a team manager, or the CEO of a multinational business, leadership can be exhausting. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day minutiae of working life, and forget about the bigger picture. Take Your Soul to Work gives you a daily meditation to help you steer your business in a more compassionate way, and inspire your employees. Read it in order, or dip in and out when you need particular guidance on an area of leadership, from mentoring to discipline. Coal River – Ellen Marie Wiseman Sometimes small acts of courage can change communities. This historical novel tells the story of the harsh reality of coal mining in the 1900s and Emma, a young woman who decides to take a stand and speak out against child labour. While fictional, much of what Emma witnesses is based on fact, and in many parts of the world her fight is just as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago. Gripping.

Home & Interiors Make The Most Of A Small Kitchen
Tiny kitchen spaces are often extremely efficient – you can wash, slice and cook almost without moving at all. And you can create a practical and attractive galley kitchen for very little money, writes Katherine Sorrell.
PLANNING THE ROOM In a small kitchen every centimetre counts, and the first principle of design is the ‘work triangle’ – the movement between the cooker, sink and fridge. Each zone should be self-contained, with its own storage and worktop space, but it should also be easy to move between each one. Ensure this by drawing a floor plan with lines connecting each point on the triangle, and avoid placing obstructions between them. In theory the most efficient length for each side of the triangle is about two metres, but in practice the three work centres should not be uncomfortably close or too far apart. In a double galley, keep the sink and cooker on the same side, with the fridge opposite. You can’t create a triangle in a single galley, but its linear shape makes it easy to use as long as the line is not too long.
14
Aim for tall cupboards at one end, then the hob, and the maximum amount of worktop between the hob and the sink, with the dishwasher next to the sink at the other end. Add a rubbish bin under the sink and, if you have room, a pull-out larder. EATING AND ENTERTAINING It’s always a good idea to fit in somewhere to eat and drink – perhaps a fold-down table, or a small dining table which extends for extra guests. Or, add a breakfast bar by forming an ‘L’ shape at the end of a worktop and tuck a couple of high stools underneath it. CHOOSING UNITS & WORKTOPS The trend is for mixing textures and colours in the kitchen, including metallics, marble and rough, tough industrial accents. Deep worktops and open shelving will update any sized kitchen but quality matters most. Cheaper carcasses are made from chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs, which is fine for a budget option. But for a well-used, long-lasting kitchen, opt for plywood or MDF veneer, the thicker the better. Laminate worktops are the budget choice – choose high-pressure rather than low-pressure ones, as they’re more durable. Wooden worktops can be inexpensive, but avoid ones that are too
By Katherine Sorrell
cheap or too thin, especially next to a sink as they’ll just warp and buckle. Splashbacks are often made from the worktop material, though cheaper alternatives are ceramic tiles, tongue and groove painted with tough gloss, or a fashionable sheet of clear or coloured acrylic. MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SPACE WITH THESE IDEAS • Fit wall cupboards that go right up to the ceiling • Sliding doors are ideal as they don’t intrude into the room • ‘Magic’ corner cupboards (with mechanisms that let you access the back) let you fit more in • Wall-hung racking systems provide organisation but let you see what you’ve got • Pull-out shelving and slim drawers (e.g. in the plinth) add extra storage space • Internal fittings help organise cupboards • For appliances, choose multifunctional, compact, slimline, built-in and stacking versions • Reflective and/or transparent surfaces and pale colours make the room seem bigger • Base cabinets on legs or recessed plinths let you see more floor • Avoid visual confusion by sticking to ultra-plain cabinet fronts with either no handles or very discreet ones • Larger-than-average floor tiles make the floor seem larger Main Image:Make use of wall space, drawers, slim appliances and free-standing storage such as trolleys. This story of how in 1912 and 1913 British women fought for the right to vote is immensely worthy, technically accomplished and well acted and we are reminded that it was not until 1928 that full women’s suffrage was achieved in the UK. Starring Carey Mulligan, Anne-Marie Duff and Helena Bonham Carter. Saturday 5th March ‘A Walk in the Woods’ (15) After 20 years living in England, Bill Bryson returns to the U.S. where he decides the best way to connect with his homeland is to hike the Appalachian Trail with one of his oldest friends. Lamb & Spinach Curry Ready in 55 minutes
Serves 4
This mildly spiced curry thickened with red lentils and spinach will make a refreshing change for a family meal. Serve with a cooling cucumber and mint yoghurt and some warmed naan bread for a really filling mid-week supper.
Ingredients: • 2 tbsp oil • 600g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped • 6 tbsp balti curry paste • 75g red split lentils • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 200g baby spinach leaves • 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander • Boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges to serve
TIP For a spicier flavour replace the balti curry paste with one that has a little more heat such as Madras. Adding some finely chopped red chilli when frying the onion will also boost the heat factor!
24
Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the lamb pieces and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and sealed all over. Remove the lamb with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil and fry the rest of the lamb pieces in the same way. Add the onion and garlic (and a splash more oil, if needed) and fry over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes, then stir in the curry paste and fry for a further minute until fragrant. Return the meat to the pan and stir to coat in the curry paste. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, 300ml cold water and the lentils. Reduce the heat then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the meat is tender. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Serve with the boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges.

Coggeshall in Bloom The ‘In Bloom’ movement is all about using plants and flowers to improve local areas and to bring together people who care about their local community. Coggeshall is just one of many towns and villages across the UK that have joined the movement. From a tiny beginning in 2014, Coggeshall now has a team of about 10 people and this year has won a Silver Medal accolade for its efforts in Anglia in Bloom 2015. You may have a large front garden or just window boxes, tubs or baskets but you can all still help to make the town more beautiful using plants to improve the appearance of your house or business frontage. If you’re involved with your local school, church or community group, or run a local business, shop or pub, we would love to have your support; the more people, groups and businesses that become involved in the initiative the better. You don’t have to have green fingers, as there are lots of other ways to be involved such as helping to clear and tidy overgrown areas, join our committee to help develop the work of Coggeshall in Bloom, or become a sponsor. For the first time In 2016 you will be able to enter the Coggeshall in Bloom competition; our very own competition to help encourage involvement with Coggeshall in Bloom. Enter your window box, front garden, community group, business, allotment, or church etc. (categories yet to be announced) to win an award and tell your neighbours. Keep in touch via our Facebook page (Coggeshall in Bloom), e-mail your queries and interest to coggeshallinbloom@gmail.com, or call us on 01376-562750 or 562039. Please join us to help make Coggeshall a more picturesque place for everyone to live in and visit.

Motoring The Fiat 500 - Remastering an Icon
Fiat’s whizzy runabout may have had a facelift but it still has bags of retro-chic. I heard it first-hand that some weeks the 500 is the only car Fiat dealers sell, and at other times it outsells all other models in their range combined. But who’s surprised really? Since its launch in 2007, Fiat have made 1.5 million 500s. And the reason is it’s simply a fun car to drive. The original reincarnation (‘scuse the pun) drew entirely on the original 1960s Cinquecento’s Italian style. This “re-master”, as Fiat calls it, is no different. Along with the BMW Mini and Vauxhall’s Adam, Fiat has plugged firmly into the “fashion car” sector, appealing to those buyers who like their runabout styled with their own individual and personal touches, but are still part of the chic set. The new version has received both a facelift and a tummy tuck. The sporty Abarth version aside, the 500 is now available in three trim levels, the names of which chime very well with its aimed-for sector: the Pop, Pop Star and Lounge. Three petrol engines provide
the go. The mid-range, but tiny, 900cc turbocharged twocylinder TwinAir 85bhp version recently secured Fiat the Citycar award from ecomotoring website Next Green Car, but the other two are no gas guzzlers either. A second 105bhp turbo version of the 900cc engine is the most powerful whilst, surprisingly, the lowest powered of the trio is a 1.2 normally-aspirated 4 cylinder variant. 5-speed gearboxes are standard on the two lower powered engines, while the 105bhp engine has a 6-speed box. Standard features include LED running lights, height-adjustable steering wheel, USB and aux-in connections on the stereo, central locking and electric windows. The top of the range Lounge version augments this with, amongst other features, fog lights, rear parking sensors and a touchscreen based entertainment system. Where the facelift and the sector positioning really show is in the customisation, where the available combinations take up about three-quarters of the glossy sales catalogue. From wheel size (15”, 16” or 17”) through exterior styling to interior colours and gadgets, the list goes on. The options even extend to the style of 500 badge on the (optional, of course) side protection strips and the colour of the key fob cover!
By Iain Betson
It’s in the driving that the 500 wins and wins again. With its small engines you’d think that the 500 would struggle to beat a snail - but it’s not so. The 85 horse powers of the mid-spec engine nip the car along to a very respectable 107mph and get it to 60 in 11 seconds. It’s frugal too: none of the three engines gives a combined cycle of less than 60mpg figures helped, no doubt, by being equipped with start/stop technology, which is ideal for the mainly city driving seen by most 500s. I was expecting the engine to be a little on the shaky side, being that it has only two cylinders on-board, but that is not the case - I couldn’t detect any lumpiness at all. After nearly 10 years of production, Fiat have remained wise and maintained both the lines and the size of the 500. Facelifts are sometimes more than cosmetic and can extend to lengthening of the wheelbase or widening of the body. Sure, it’s getting on for twice the size of the Cinquecento, but that didn’t come with airbags and air conditioning. Keeping the size the same means the remastered Fiat 500 is still the fun tippy-toes whizz-about it’s always been.
