Inside
Hello We have a great June/July issue for you and there’s definitely a bit of an outdoor theme running through the pages! Ever fancied having a Wild Sleepout? The RSPB are urging families to go on a mini adventure and discover what goes bump in the night. Details are on page 11. Our What’s On pages are full of great outdoor events including fetes, a Royal Garden Party, outdoor music concerts, street parties, flower festivals, open garden days and much more. There’s even the opportunity to sketch outdoors too. Lets hope that the weather is kind to all those who are either organising these great outdoor events and of course those who are visiting too. We also have our usual recipes, book reviews, gardening tips from Pippa Greenwood and ideas for sprucing up your outdoor space as well.

Country Mutters Just an Imperfect Day
A perfect day for some might be lying on a tropical beach being plied with rare delicacies while being wafted to a gentle doze by the fronds of palm trees. Mine would be a much simpler and less expensive option. It would be all about the absence of the usual plethora of petty annoyances that crease the brow and depress the spirits. I would wake up without the aid of the feral beast’s fish breath miaow in my face at 5.00am. I would not go downstairs for a cup of black tea because we’d run out of milk. I would not wander out to the greenhouse to find that my seedlings, having mouldered apathetically in the damp cold for a month, had not have been baked to a crisp at the first sign of sunlight. The car would start on one turn of the key and it would not make it’s usual variety of unpleasant death rattle-type sounds of metal grinding upon metal. There would not be a red light on the fuel gauge. I would travel into town without sitting in a traffic jam. I would park without having to do a tour of the town’s car parks to find a space. I would walk the length of the High Street without my shoelace unraveling 60 times. My shopping trip would not involve me revolving despondently in front of 360 degree mirrors in an array of garments that make me look like a cottage loaf, a bag lady or a schlemiel, whatever one of those is. Shop assistants would not ignore me or slap down my receipt in what could be described at best as an off-hand manner.

of tools in an attempt to free it. Youngest son would not respond in a monosyllabic grunt to my cheery greeting. I would turn on my computer, which would immediately load every page without once displaying the spinning beach ball of death. The broadband would not grudgingly trickle out a connection and I would complete my online order which would not have taken me 2 days to get through the checkout process. I would glance at the newspaper, and the first story I read would not immediately incense me as yet another example of political penny pinching resulting in another spectacular example of Just Plain Stupid. I would not eat a calorie loaded convenience meal because I couldn’t be bothered to cook, nor would I have to eat it with a plastic fork because of a lack of accessible cutlery. I would not need 5 different sets of controls to turn on the tv, which would not eventually reveal 150 channels of unwatchable garbage. I would not feel the need to cut my losses and retire to bed early, only to lie awake pondering the meaning of life and listening to the sound of Husband hitting the cutlery drawer repeatedly with a hammer….
I would not arrive home to find that the cutlery drawer had jammed shut again and Husband would not be perspiring freely, swearing viciously and brandishing an array

Home & Interiors Outdoor Living
By Katherine Sorrell
consulting a professional, who will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of.
Longer days mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. If your garden is in need of an update, the secret is in the planning - how will you use the space and what do you want from it? Sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they coordinate. If in doubt, consider
6
In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids is ideal for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest and are easier to deal with than slopes, but avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too - will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement your kitchen flooring for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual
interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences, hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path entwined with fragrant honeysuckle makes a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can link two different areas of the garden and offer a shady spot to sit in. Finally, furniture. Consider waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. If space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away, or build seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. The time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden, and creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion – in fact, turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may add value to your property. Summer Pudding Serves 6-8
Ready in 1 hour plus overnight chilling time This is a classic summer British dessert made with just a few simple ingredients. Make the day before serving to allow plenty of time for the sweet berry juices to soften the bread. Serve with softly whipped cream, Greek style yoghurt or tangy crème fraiche.
Ingredients: • 275g small strawberries, hulled and halved • 275g raspberries • 175g blueberries • 100g black or red currants, removed from stalks • 175g caster sugar • 10 large slices mediumsliced white bread (preferably one day old) • 1 whole strawberry, to decorate
TIP Take care not to overcook the fruit in step one. All the berries should be just softened but still holding their shape.

Place all the fruit in a large saucepan with the sugar and 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until the juices begin to run. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. Cut away the crusts from the slices of bread. Cut a round of bread from one slice to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the rest of the slices in half lengthways. Strain off some of the juice from the fruit into a shallow dish. Line the pudding basin with cling film, allowing it to overhang the sides. Dip the round of bread in the strained juice and use to line the base of the basin. Use most of the slices to line around the sides of the basin, dipping each one in the juice and overlapping the slices as you go, so there are no gaps. Use a slotted spoon to spoon all the fruits into the bread-lined basin, pressing down gently. Cover completely with the rest of the bread slices, trimming them to fit as necessary. Spoon over a little of the remaining juice then cover with a saucer that fits just inside the top of the basin and weigh down with weights or food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. Reserve the remaining juice. To serve, remove the weights and invert the pudding onto a lipped plate. Remove the cling film. Pour over the reserved juices and decorate with a fresh strawberry.

Camping out for nature
RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout: 29 – 31 July Grown-ups and children alike are in for a treat over the upcoming summer holidays as the RSPB will once again be urging nature lovers to spend a night under the stars for its annual Big Wild Sleepout. The charity is challenging children and their families across the UK to go on a miniadventure, get wild and discover what goes bump in the night with the amazing nocturnal wildlife on their doorstep. Whether it be glamping in tents or caravans, getting back to basics in dens and shelters or even roughing it under open skies and a blanket of stars, there will be Sleepout styles to cater for all levels and ages. Thousands will be having Sleepouts in their gardens and back yards in addition to organised events taking place at RSPB nature reserves across the country, and partner sites for those that would prefer a guided experience teeming with wildlife. Evening activities will vary for each event, but a few will include stargazing, bushcraft, fireside cooking and fun with stories round the campfire. Some of the more extraordinary Sleepouts in the pipeline include stepping back in time and camping out in a museum, sleeping out under a wind turbine and seeing shooting stars, globular clusters and
10
Everyone taking part can choose to donate money to help the RSPB give nature a home. The Big Wild Sleepout is part of the RSPB’s ‘Giving Nature a Home’ campaign. James Harding-Morris, Big Wild Sleepout organiser said: “Our main aim is to get children and grown-ups connected to nature to help preserve it for future generations and what better way to do this than spending a night under the stars and getting to know the amazing animals around us that thrive in the dark. By taking part in Sleepout and sharing your experiences with the RSPB, we’re getting a deeper understanding of the wildlife around us, as well as helping to give nature a home.” Special Big Wild Sleep Out events will be held in Havergate, Suffolk, Lakenheath Fen, Suffolk and South Essex Marshes. Sign up for a Big Wild Sleepout pack and register to take part from 15 June at www.rspb.org.uk/sleepout. Participants will be invited to let the RSPB know once they’ve taken part and to share their experiences on the website and on social media using #BigWildSleepout.

Books for Dad Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy. Conspiracy – Iain gale Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Wellresearched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape. 50 evening adventures – tim, kerry, ella and amy meek Another great resource for tackling the ‘I’m bored’ mantra, 50 Evening Adventures provides a plethora of ideas for making the most of evenings as a family. There are suggestions for places to go, things to do and meals to cook outside. Former teachers Tim and Kerry Meek are currently travelling around Europe in a caravan with their daughters. They’re used to packing lightly, so most of the suggestions don’t need any special equipment, and can be carried out for free, or very cheaply.

the hairy bikers blood, Sweat and tyres: the autobiography – dave myers and Si king If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laughout -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it. Poor boy road – james l. weaver Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. Jake Caldwell is a mob-enforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner.
the den book – Fiona danks and Jo Schofield Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine. more home Comforts – james martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. More than 100 recipes are included, many of which have been shown in the TV series. Dad will soon be whipping you up Beer Can Piri Piri Chicken, Lamb Belly with BBQ Sauce & Pickled Red Onion, or just some good old chocolate brownies.

Chappel Millennium Green Community Orchard
On the map of Chappel Millennium Green, just inside the entrance, is an area shown as ‘The Orchard’ where memorial fruit trees have been gradually planted. Given the (thankfully) slow rate of progress the directors of CMG Ltd decided to buy in sufficient trees to boost the numbers of trees to create a more extensive orchard. Last summer classes 3 and 4 from Chappel School went onto the Green with 4.5 metre lengths of string to calculate how many trees would be needed and they came up with a total of 75. For the first phase 36 trees were purchased from the East of England Orchards Project in Norfolk who specialise in heritage fruit trees. All of the trees are Essex and Suffolk varieties, most of which are not commercially cultivated. This project has been made
possible through the generosity of Chappel Primary School via a sponsored walk and a bequest from the late Les Houghton of Wakes Colne. Since the soil is a very sticky clay the holes for planting were dug in advance and then Class 4 from Chappel Primary School spent the afternoon on a sunny Wednesday helping to plant all 36 trees. The pupils had a short lesson on what the trees were and how they were grown, a demonstration of how to plant a tree and were then supplied with tree guards, fertiliser and tree ties and let loose. They worked in pairs and had 2 trees to plant per pair. A competitive element arose for some and some pairs managed to plant lots more than others! Fortunately the ground wasn’t too muddy and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon soon passed with them getting back to school just in time for ‘hometime’. Next year will see phase 2 of the project with the final space being filled with about another 30 trees, this time with apples, pears and cherries from Suffolk and Hertfordshire.

Marinated Pepper Platter Serves 6 as starter or part of buffet
Ready in 1 hour, plus marinating
A really summery platter of grilled peppers with sun-dried tomatoes and mozzarella pearls. Make a day in advance and chill in the fridge until required. Serve with crusty bread for a simple starter or as part of a summer buffet.
Ingredients: • 6 mixed red, yellow and orange peppers • 1 x 280g jar sun-dried tomatoes in oil • 2 x 125g tubs mozzarella pearls, drained • 2 tbsp capers, drained and rinsed • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 3 tbsp balsamic oil • Handful fresh basil leaves, shredded
TIP Instead of mozzarella try another cheese, such as crumbled feta or slices of Brie or Camembert.
26
Halve all the peppers, leaving the stalks on. Remove and discard the pith and seeds. Place all the peppers, skinside up, on a grill pan and grill under a moderate heat for 7-8 minutes, until the skins are blistered and charred in places. Leave until cool enough to handle, then peel off as much of the skin from each pepper as you can. Place all the grilled peppers, cut-side up, on a large platter. Drain and roughly chop the sun-dried tomatoes (reserving the oil). Fill each pepper half with some of the tomatoes, along with the mozzarella pearls and capers. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Mix the reserved sun dried tomato oil with the balsamic vinegar and pour over and around the peppers. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Serve garnished with the shredded basil leaves.

Tackling Troublesome Weeds by Pippa Greenwood Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? Top of my weed hate list is hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta), which produces a little rosette of leaves topped with a short spike with tiny white flowers, and I despise it because it spreads so quickly. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ such as your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or your lawn. So what makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities and sometimes compete actively with nearby garden plants. • They can create shade and stunt the growth of nearby plants. • Those with a ground-cover like effect can cause the growth of garden plants to be distorted or held back. • Weeds may harbour pests or diseases.
So what can you do to try to minimise the problems they cause without spending hours with a hoe or sprayer? • Get on top of weeds early in the year - removing as many as possible before your garden plants start to grow
28
strongly makes weeding easier and cuts down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. • Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed to prevent dormant weed seeds from germinating. • Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring more seeds to the surface and encourages germination. • Remove your weeds before they set seed. • Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). • When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots is my little red-handled weeder, see www.pippagreenwood. com/products/good-growing for more information. • Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is
heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. Prepare the area you intend to sow well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date, which allows dormant weed seeds to germinate; remove the weed seedlings and then sow or plant up as you wish. This should give you fewer problems later on. • Many weeds can be kept at bay if you cover the soil surface with two to three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) of mulch. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

Finance
By Ann Haldon
Staying in or leaving the EU What are the implications for your personal finances?
With so much speculation about the economic implications of leaving the EU, you are probably wondering what the effect will be on your personal finances, whether we stay or go. The problem is there’s a lack of hard data or previous experience on which to model financial predictions for leaving the EU, so clear judgement is already hampered. David Cameron’s negotiations at the summit earlier this year mean that we retain the pound if we stay in Europe. Many top business people and political figures are campaigning strongly to leave, and envision a more stable UK having regained our independence negotiating trade deals on our own terms, and taking back the control we once had. So what issues should we be thinking about? To provide a clearer picture of the issues involved when thinking about the pound in your pocket, we’ve covered a few of the areas that would experience the biggest impact should we exit, as well as providing some of the expert opinions aired in the media over the last few months on: • The value of the pound • The state of the property market • Fuel prices
A majority vote to leave the EU The value of sterling At the start of 2016, sterling fell to its lowest level for 10 years against the dollar, largely due to the uncertainty surrounding our membership of the European Union. In general, a weaker sterling brings higher inflation and reduced purchasing power for consumers, but low value might only be an issue during the transition period rather than in the long-term. Others have suggested that being independent of Europe would allow us to forge our own way without impedance, taking more control over how sterling fares in the markets. In fact, former CBI leader, John Longworth, recently expressed his personal view that the UK’s future would be “brighter” if we left Europe. The property market Earlier this year, online estate agents eMoov surveyed 1,000 homeowners about the impact of an exit on property prices. 55% of people thought an exit would affect the price of their property with 34% of this number suggesting that it could increase the value of their home.¹ eMoov say that the general economic uncertainty might dissuade would-be purchasers from making such a huge financial decision, which could then reduce overall demand. Fuel prices The Automobile Association claims that petrol prices would rise by nearly 19p per litre soon after an exit vote. Their calculation was based on a report by Goldman Sachs,
which estimated a 20% fall in the value of the pound, and a tripling of oil prices. If this sounds like a huge increase you might be right; however, the RAC suggests that even if sterling did fall in value, fuel prices would not be dramatically affected by the drop. Voting to stay At the EU summit in February, David Cameron secured ‘special status’ for the UK in Europe. This includes exemption from the ‘ever closer union’ which would involve greater political integration of member states - one of the original intentions of the EU’s founders. The Prime Minister also attained specific recognition that the euro was not the sole currency within the Union, protecting the existence of sterling now and in the future. Financial regulation by Europe is expected to continue, however, and this is one of the major issues for those wanting to exit. https://www.lovemoney.com/ news/50954/brexit-eu-in-outreferendum-property-prices-petrolpensions-air-fares-jobs http://home.bt.com/lifestyle/ money/mortgages-bills/what-abrexit-could-mean-for-our-money11364042606186
