Hello
Inside
Welcome once again to our June/July issue. I can’t quite believe that we are already almost half way through the year! Maybe the cold temperatures and rain has something to do with it. Anyway - let’s not let the weather dampen our spirits as we have a great couple of months to look forward to. We won’t let a bit of the old wet stuff rain on our parade! Once again our What’s On pages are full to the brim with things to do. As you would expect we have all the usual open garden days which are always so popular. We have events to mark the Jubilee. We have fetes, festivals and fairs galore, not to mention quizzes, carnivals, music, drama and dancing.

Book Reviews
Good Sport Stories The Games are upon us and suddenly the country is sports mad. If ‘Couch Surfing’ is more your style, then how about getting some fresh air and curling up in a deckchair with some of the best sporting novels around?
Seabiscuit: Three Men and a Racehorse Laura Hillenbrand This is a classic story of seeing the potential in the underdog. Seabiscuit has wonky legs and a rather pathetic excuse for a tail but three men spot his potential and help shape this remarkable animal’s future. Who better to ride him than a partially-sighted, failed boxer? It’s a master-class in triumph over adversity that sees the men rescue Seabiscuit from a life of obscurity and transform him into the stuff of legends.
Twain’s philosophy that ‘golf is a good walk spoiled’ may be inclined to pick up a five-iron after reading this novel. The story proves that with the right support you can achieve anything. A former golfing champion shows up to compete in a 36-hole showdown against two golfing greats. But the local war hero has one secret weapon: his caddie, Bagger Vance.
The Loneliness of a Long-Distance Runner Alan Sillitoe There’s something so noble about the lone runner, battling the inclement weather like a solitary soldier. This is a story of antiauthoritarianism that will resonate with anyone who ever had to do cross-country running on a wet and windy November morning, in their vest and pants. Set in a reform school, it’s about integrity and going against the system. Stillitoe’s beautiful and moving novel cut an elegant and poised figure in the literary world and inspired a generation.

Send a Cow for the Jubilee Are you doing something to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this summer? Maybe you’re having a Jubilee tea party, street party, barbeque, church fete or just celebrating with friends. If you’re already in the party mood, why not use the occasion to fundraise for a charity at the same time? Send a Cow is a charity which helps thousands of African families and orphans grow enough food to eat, sell their produce and develop sustainable small businesses so they can build new lives free from poverty and hunger. They provide training, livestock, seeds and support and in turn,
families pass on these resources to others, allowing even more people to develop skills, confidence and self respect. The charity also provides help in other areas such as health and hygiene and HIV/Aids awareness. This balance of practical farming skills with social and life skills means that people are happier and healthier, children are educated, wealth is created and communities are stronger. The Send a Cow website has lots of Jubilee Tea resources which are free to download, including recipes, tea party invitations, instructions of how to make your own bunting and fundraising ideas. The Woodland Trust’s Jubilee Woods Project Millions of people across the country are coming together for one long weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. But after the last scone has been eaten and the bunting has been taken down, there is a way of marking the occasion that will leave a lasting legacy for everyone to enjoy. The Woodland Trust’s Jubilee Woods Project aims to plant 6 million trees in hundreds of Jubilee Woods and 60 special Diamond Woods. Their flagship Diamond Jubilee Wood will be created in the heart of The National Forest in Leicestershire on 460 acres of land which will eventually be open for all to enjoy. Everyone can contribute to the project: in return for a
donation the Woodland Trust will plant a tree for you in a special section of the wood. Closer to home, there are opportunities for everyone to get involved in the project. Schools and community groups can apply for free tree packs to plant in playgrounds and community spaces. There are different collections to choose from - trees to attract wildlife, trees for year round colour or wild harvest packs. Or you could choose to bring a touch of royalty to your neighbourhood by planting a single Royal Oak Sapling. These have been grown specially to mark the occasion from acorns gathered from a royal estate. There is help and advice available for groups or individuals who would like to plant a wood. And for those of us who garden on a smaller scale, you can buy the perfect tree or hedging plants for your plot from a range on the Trust’s website for your own personal memento of 2012. For more information visit http://www. woodlandtrust.org.uk/ or contact the woodland creation team on 0845 293 5689 or emailjubileewoods@woodlandtrust.org.uk

Olympic Torch Relay comes to Colchester The Olympic Flame arrives in Colchester on Friday 6th July and will travel through the town from 7.25am to 8.15am. Given the length of the whole journey, timings are approximate, so if you want to be there to cheer on the torchbearers, make sure you arrive in good time. Although the torch will be with us for a short time, there are plenty of free activities in the town centre on the day to help prolong the celebrations. Beginning with a performance by Colchester’s Rock Choir at The Rovers Tye, Ipswich Road at 7.15, you could then go to St John’s Church for a community breakfast and free Zumba class. At 7.45am in East Bay, you will find the Souterrain Singers and basketball display. There will be more music at The Minories, Tai Chi from firstsite and a Ribbon Dance from the Colchester Chinese Cultural Society on the High St. At the war memorial outside the castle gates, there will be a performance of the newly commissioned ‘Colchester Anthem’ by Funky Voices and free bacon butties from the Castle Methodist Church first come first served. The Town Crier, the Town Watch and the Mayor will welcome the Torch outside the Town Hall at 7.45am. Many organisations will be opening their doors throughout the day offering refreshments, performances and activities for all ages, lots of them free and more than enough to make sure this will be a day to remember. For more information and a full listing of events call 01206 282920 or visit http://www.colchester.gov.uk/torch

Please mention The
Bures Music Festival to stage world-class event The Bures Music Festival promises to bring five blistering days of music and entertainment to the region this July 4 to July 8. Traditionally known for its flagship event, Jazz by the Stour, organisers say that the format has evolved in 2012. It promises a real summer festival feel, opening up the stage to up-and-coming local talent as well as international and UK-touring bands. Tom Moore, booker for the festival says that the team wants the event to appeal to a wider audience. “We’ve broadened the range of acts to attract young people and families, and have secured some fantastic talent so there’s a real buzz around the line-up. Our aim is to rival some of the bigger festivals with our music, but remain more accessible with free camping and better value ticket prices, which we’ve lowered this year.” Acts include indie band This Boy Wonders, who performed at last year’s Reading and Leeds Festivals and successful local ska act Two Steps Twice. European festival headliner Hokie Joint will bring a touch of the blues to the event, while Robbie Gladwell of Steve Harley’s Cockney Rebel fame joins the line-up with his band. Stadiumtouring Queen tribute band ‘Rhapsody… Is This The Real Queen’ promises to be a real festival showstopper. They are stopping by on their European tour to headline on Saturday night. The festival opens on a choral note on Wednesday evening with classical quartet Four Voices. Moore says jazz fans will not be disappointed, with much loved jazz act Pete Jezard & the Blackwater Band scheduled to perform on Thursday night. Meanwhile, the ever popular B-Fest will showcase up and coming young talent in fierce competition. BBC Radio Suffolk’s Stephen Foster hosts Friday’s blues night, presenting Big Boy Bloater and the Limits supported by Blues Situation. Sunday is a great day for families. Unlike previous years, kids will be able to enjoy bouncy castles and rides while parents can relax and enjoy the music. And with the entertainment under cover, this is one festival that doesn’t rely on good weather. The Bures Music Festival is a not-for-profit event, with all proceeds going to local charities. A Proverbial Life... A picture paints a thousand words In our early days of married life each family photograph was lovingly taken with camera and film, delivered to the chemist for development and the finished prints picked up a week later. Sometimes, I’d use a special envelope for sending films off for processing to some far flung film developers before, hopefully, having them delivered back through the door. I can still remember the excitement of collecting developed pictures from the chemist; hoping the assistants hadn’t had a sneak peak at them, then hiding round the corner to scan the latest pictorial record of our life. There were always some photographs that hadn’t quite turned out as expected; blurrily out of focus, too bright or too dark, with maybe a fat thumb or skinny finger covering the lens and captured for all to see. I treasured these photographs. I used to spread them out on the living room floor and gaze at them for hours. Then once I’d had my fill of imprinting them on my memory and showing them off I’d proudly stick them into albums. As the years passed the collection of photographs and albums grew. As further years passed I became lax about sticking the photos in albums; instead tossing the packets of prints into an old apple box kept for that purpose. With the arrival of digital cameras we didn’t have to be so careful in our photo taking. Snap, snap, snap at each and every opportunity with no fears about the costs of film or processing. Transfer to the computer, delete those you don’t like, crop, adjust and save those you do. In the early days proudly printing them out on the home printer, then later, just burn them to disc and forget about the printing. Stacks and stacks of discs recording our life, sanitised, edited and suitable for viewing by all. Emailed to friends and

family, posted on Facebook and shared with the world, backed up then slipped into little plastic wallets... and largely forgotten. Far too many to commit to memory – far too many marking insignificant and truly mundane moments. Recently, while sorting through some papers I came across a photograph. It showed three small boys in swimming trunks and a middle aged man also in trunks. They were all standing in a river, knee deep in water and holding hands. It’s a glorious summer day and while you can’t fully see their faces it’s clear they’re laughing. If you look closely you can see fishing rods, towels, a picnic and two cans of beer on the riverbank. You can also see my toes captured while sitting on the grass and taking the photograph. I’d nearly forgotten that day 25 years ago; not quite but nearly. Three young boys and their granddad fishing and swimming, the family holiday, the nettles, the trek to the swimming spot and the digging for worms. I remember a lot more but it’s not for sharing. It’s for savouring in quiet, private moments when I need to count my blessings – something I do frequently. Apart from the wonderful memories the photograph invoked it also prompted another feeling. I’m now increasingly convinced of the need to revert to actually printing my digital photographs, or of having them printed for me. I don’t want them to be forgotten or consigned to shiny metal discs and stuffed into brittle plastic envelopes. I’d quite like my children and grandchildren to come across them and think, ‘I remember that.’

Open Farm
Sunday 17th June Open Farm Sunday is a project which sees hundreds of farmers across the UK opening up their farm for one Sunday each year. It is a fantastic opportunity for everyone, young and old, to get a glimpse of what it means to be a farmer. Each event is unique with its own activities based around the farm’s own individual story. The Taylor family of Lower Dairy Farm in Little Horkesley will be opening up their farm this year for the third time.
Jenny Taylor at Lower Dairy Farm
Jenny Taylor says ‘It’s a really fun day and an opportunity to share our farm with lots of different people. It gets everyone out into the countryside and it’s a great way to increase awareness of farming methods and where our food comes from.’ At Lower Dairy Farm visitors can go on a self-guided walk with information about the natural history of the area, there are children’s activities and displays
about the history of the farm and its timberframed buildings. You can also find out about the importance of insects on growing crops by taking part in a pollinator survey. There are refreshments available in the barn and home produced beef and pork for sale, as well as eggs, jams, preserves and ice cream, so you can even take a little taste of the countryside back home with you. Open from 11.00am - 4.00pm, free entry. http:// www.lowerdairyfarm.co.uk
For more information on the scheme and a list of other farms open in your area, visit http://www. farmsunday.org/ or contact Andrew Nottage East Anglia co-ordinator 01223 839002.

Aldham Village Hall Fund Raising Update I am pleased to report that over the past two months, our fund raising efforts have increased the “Money Pot” by nearly £1,000, bringing our total raised to date to £33,500. Lots of ladies came to the Fashion Show kindly organised by Wendy Byford on the 1st May, which which resulted in a total of £396.00 for the funds. As Car Boot Sales are more popular in the Summer, we will not be holding another Table Top sale until Saturday 8th September. Much nicer in the Winter to be in a warm hall than standing outside facing the elements trying to sell your wares! If you are interested in having a stall when we start up again, please give me a ring on 01206 211624. Tables will still be £5.00 each, but we are changing the time of the sales to 10.00.a.m to 1.00.p.m. We look forward to your support. Anne Fulcher – Aldham Fund Raising Committee

The National Garden Scheme In 1927 the National Gardens Scheme was founded with the aim of raising money for the nurses of the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI). The idea was to ask individuals to open up quality private gardens for ‘a shilling a head’. At that time garden visiting was already a well-established pastime, but only for a privileged few. However in the first year of the NGS over £8,000 was raised from visitors to 609 gardens. A network of volunteer County Organisers was set up and by 1931 over 1,000 private gardens were open. Country Life magazine produced a handbook, known as “The Yellow Book” because of its bright cover. After the Second World War, the National Health Service took on the District Nursing Service, but money was still needed to care for retired nurses and invest in training so the NGS continued as before. Then in 1948 the NGS offered to join forces with the National Trust to restore and preserve important gardens and, in return, the National Trust opened many of its most prestigious gardens. Despite massive inflation in the post-war years, the entrance fee was held at one shilling. More realistic entrance fees were introduced in the 1970s and the gardens began to raise significant donations.
Of the original gardens that were opened, 120 are accessible for the 85th anniversary in 2012. In addition around 3700 more gardens will be open raising around £2.6 million. Originally the gardens were predominantly the large grounds of stately homes with teams of gardeners maintaining them. But now many more small gardens open, from cottages to terraced houses and in a community effort many neighbouring and nearby properties open their gates on the same day to enable visitors to delight in a range of styles and plants within a few hours. As much part of a day out to see the gardens is the opportunity to buy plants and to enjoy tea and cakes. Around 80% of the funds raised by both entry to the gardens and from the sale of plants and refreshments goes back to the NGS and in turn to their nominated charities. If you are a regular visitor then the NGS still produces its Yellow Book which is a directory of gardens open throughout the UK (available from the website or from bookshops), and county booklets which are available from libraries or can be downloaded from the website.
In 1980 The National Gardens Scheme In addition both regular and occasional visitors Charitable Trust was established as an can benefit from using the excellent NGS independent charity, with Her Majesty Queen website (www.ngs.org.uk) where you can search Elizabeth the Queen Mother as Patron and within a region and even narrow the results Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Duchess down to a specific day. of Gloucester as President. In 1984 Macmillan Inspiration for your garden, raising money for Cancer Relief joined the list of beneficiary charity and cake – it doesn’t get much better charities. In the years that followed other than that! charities joinedVisit including Marie at Curie Cancer our website www.theconnectionmagazine.co.uk (For Scottish Gardens visit www. Country Mutters
Patriot Games....by Lady Muck
Has there ever been a year more crammed full of organised celebrations? Every shop is plunged into gloom, their windows obscured by notices of Jubilympic-related events and you can’t buy a lamb chop without being asked if you’d like the Celebration Special Offer of a dozen for the same price as 40 cost in 1953, without inflation of course ha-ha. And while you’re working that one out, the shelves of useful things like buckets and bread have disappeared under the weight of bunting, flags and novelty hats. There’s so much red, white and blue on the streets you’d be forgiven for thinking we were at war. And then you get phone calls from people you once bought a raffle ticket from which go something like, ‘We very much hope you can come to our celebrations on the village green - it would be lovely to see you there. Perhaps you wouldn’t mind contributing something to our refreshments table - can I put you down for a vat of potato salad, 6 gross fairy cakes and a bottle of something interesting - would that be all right?’ You meekly agree, adding up the cost in your head because you know everything you bring will be scrutinised by the gimlet eye of the village oligarchy and needs to be of a certain standard. You will find yourself hyperventilating while icing the fairy cakes at 2.00am the night before, in the certain knowledge that the ample-bosomed matriarch who receives your contribution with an air of faint disappointment, will put her glasses on specially for the inspection then shout out loudly, ‘Maureen another bottle of plonk de plonk over here’. As you leave her side, you will hear a muttered, ‘Oh dear. Put these in the kitchen, will you?’ Your cakes will languish forlorn by the side of the sink, ‘accidentally’ overlooked by even the greediest children who prefer a more professional looking offering. And I’m sure I’d be looking forward to the ‘O’ (censored) games more if I thought it was about a bunch of sporty types who turn up to perform amazing physical feats rather than

an ad agency’s dream. Those mascots with their convoluted origins and baffling cartoon films will sell anything from decanters to rubber ducks on bicycles. What next - ‘O’ (censored) toilet paper fashioned from the recycled wood of trees growing on the slopes of Mount Olympus? A Tracey Emin print of her coffeeringed tablecloth representing how the spirit of the ‘O’ (censored) rings penetrates our everyday existence? No - I shall be celebrating these epoch-defining events with my family at home without all that paraphernalia. All right, that probably means Husband will be cursing in the shed while fixing the lawn mower, offspring will be glued to the game console in their darkened room lit by tracer fire, loud with shouts of ‘Frag!’ and ‘You’ve been pwned!’ (see urban dictionary) and I shall be in a deckchair in the garden. But rest assured I will be eating a botched cake or two and raising a glass to toast the entire royal family and all the ‘O’ (censored) teams whilst watching the far-off beacons sputter in the rain. Note: ‘O’ (censored) represents the word which must not be mentioned because of the danger of copyright infringement and is of course the major international sporting event in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions, which this year takes place in our capital.....

A Night Rescue One night last summer a couple accidentally hit a badger when they were driving along a country lane. The story of what happened next highlights the valuable work of The North East Essex Badger Group. On a warm August evening a couple were driving home through the country lanes when suddenly an animal ran across the road and was hit a glancing blow. They immediately pulled over and ran back to the skid marks, but could see nothing. Then they heard a snuffling sound coming from the hedge and discovered that it was a badger that had been hit. They were unsure what to do but remembered that they had in the car a pamphlet about badgers they had recently picked up from a stall at the village fete. This had a number to call for emergencies and soon a man turned up with some rescue equipment; he had a quick look at the unconscious badger, lifted it into a cage to take it to a vet. The couple asked to be kept informed of the badger’s condition and rather sadly completed their journey home. The following evening they had a phone call from the badger group man that they had met at the accident. It was good news – the badger had only suffered the loss of a tooth and had recovered from the concussion shortly after arriving at the vets. It was going to be released back into the wild the next evening and they were invited to attend. It was agreed to meet at the scene of the accident just before sunset because it was essential that the badger was returned to its familiar territory. That next evening the three people, and now a quite lively badger in the cage, made their way across a field behind the hedge where it had been found. They stopped short of the next boundary hedge, put the cage down, lifted the flap at the end pointing towards the hedge and stepped back a few paces. Tentatively the badger poked his nose out, sniffed a few times and then slowly walked out. It headed for the hedge
but after a few metres it stopped, looked back at the humans as if to say thank you, and then galloped the rest of the way to the hedge. After about five minutes the badger man took the couple to the point where they had seen the badger disappear into the hedge and there they saw their first badger sett – a number of large holes under the hedge with very large piles of earth at their entrances. They stood quietly but could hear no noises and the badger man said that their casualty had successfully been reunited with its family. On the walk back to the cars the couple asked the badger man about the activities of his organisation. He explained that all members were volunteers and the group was one of a network throughout the country affiliated to the national charity, the Badger Trust. Their aim is to provide protection to all badgers and their setts, to monitor and record those setts, to assist the police in bringing to justice those that break the laws laid down in the Badger Act and to give illustrated talks to other organisations, schools, etc. The couple were very interested and took home an application form to be forwarded with a very modest joining fee. Someone from the local branch would be in touch to give them a more detailed insight to what membership would entail and to accompany them on their early field trips. Food for Thought Polstead Cherries Polstead is famous for it’s cherry orchards, in particular a variety called the Polstead Black. Cherry sellers at Sudbury market in the 19th century would cry: Polstead cherries, Polstead cherries, Red as Maria Marten’s blood!’ This referred to the infamous Red Barn murder which took place in Polstead in 1828 and marries both subjects into a satisfyingly macabre image. A Cherry Fair used to be celebrated on the village green each July. Although the old varieties are not grown as extensively now, you can still buy cherries at local farms and garden gates in summer.
Cherry Pots with Fluffy Meringue Tops 500g fresh cherries, pitted and cut in half 50g soft brown sugar
Coronation Chicken
150ml red wine
Most often encountered nowadays as a sandwich filler, Poulet Reine Elizabeth, as it was originally known, was created as a dish to celebrate the Queen’s Coronation without blowing the budget of the average household in 1950’s Britain.
8 amaretti biscuits
There have been too many bad versions of the dish over the years which are responsible for it’s fall from favour - the bright yellow glutinous mush you see oozing out of a sandwich on the station platform is hardly tempting. But 60 years ago it was the height of sophistication, and thanks to the shadow of post-war austerity, the sauce was designed to ‘just coat’ the chicken, not overwhelm it. With a hint of the exotic (via the curry powder), it was nonetheless a fairly straightforward recipe with just enough faff to make it seem like you were Making an Effort. But for fashionable party hostesses, perhaps it’s greatest asset was it’s practicality: you could make it well in advance and it would sit patiently without spoiling on the buffet table. Happily this quality which made it ideal fodder for a 1950’s Coronation party still holds good for a 21st century Jubilee celebration.
3 large egg whites 150g golden caster sugar
Preheat the oven to 220°C/ gas mark 7. Place the cherries in a pan with the brown sugar and red wine. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer gently for 10 minutes until soft. Spoon the cherries in to 4 large ramekins. Roughly crumble the amaretti biscuits onto the top, dividing them equally. In a large bowl, whisk the egg whites to a stiff peak. Start adding the sugar gradually, whisking all the time until the meringue is glossy. Spoon onto the top of the cherries. Bake for 5-8 minutes until the meringue is golden. Serve with nothing else but a chilled glass of dessert wine or a generous glass of cassis.

Grandparents Rights Recently in the Media there has been a lot of speculation about Grandparents and their rights to see their grandchildren when the parents separate. At this present time we await for a change to the law. However, currently grandparents do not have an automatic right to make an application to the court in order to have regular contact with their grandchildren Grandparents require permission of the court to make their application for contact. There are certain factors to which the court should have particular regard in deciding an application for permission under Section 10 (9):A) - The nature of the proposed application for the order B) - The Applicants connection with the child C) - Any risk of that proposed application disrupting the child’s life to such an extent they would be harmed by it D) - Whether the child is being looked after by a local authority
The court in deciding whether or not to grant permission will have regard to the above. If grandparents manage to obtain permission of the court they can then make a substantive application for a contact order. The Court will consider A) -The wishes and feelings of the child concerned (considered in light of his age and understanding) B) -Their physical, emotional and educational needs C) -The likely effect on the child of any change in their circumstances D) -Their age, sex, background and any characteristics of theirs which the court considers relevant. E) -Any harm which they have suffered or are at risk of suffering. F) -How capable each of their parents and any other person in relation to whom the court considers the question to be relevant, is of meeting their needs. G) -The range of powers available to the court under the act and proceedings in question. Therefore grandparents have to first seek permission before making the substantive application.
