Top ten floral tips for brides to be
1
Ensure you choose a florist that comes highly recommended and has plenty of experience. There is nothing to beat experience.
2
Look for a florist that can enhance the flowers with hire items such as beautiful vases and candelabra or vintage crockery.
3
Be sure you feel confident that your florist has interpretted your style properly and has suggested designs that will work with the style of your dress and the style of the venue. It is essential that the flowers compliment the style of the dress perfectly.
4 5
Take plenty of pictures or a mood board showing the style of the wedding to the initial consultation.
The florist should want to see the whole style of the wedding from the dress through to the stationery - this will all help to create the perfect look.
6
It is important to discuss your budget with the florist as it is impossible for her to suggest ideas without knowing this - it will also help the florist to use designs that will work within the budget.
7
Be realistic about the flowers that are available at your time of year. Many brides would like to use peonies and sweetpeas in the autumn. Peonies especially are very short lived but there are some roses which can be used as a close substitute.
8 9
Your florist should give you a thorough itemised quote which will enable you to budget for the wedding flowers. Keep in touch with your florist and be sure to inform her of any changes to the style or colour scheme. I find that my weddings often change slightly and this is all part of the ongoing design process.
10
Good florists will provide samples of the required flowers if requested.

Satay Vegetable Skewers Ready in 30 minutes
Serves 4
If you are short on time but still want a flavoursome supper then try these delicious vegetable kebabs with a lovely spicy peanut sauce and spring onion noodles. For non-veggie kebabs replace the aubergine with cubes of lean pork or chicken fillet and cook for 15-20 minutes until the meat is cooked through and lightly charred.
Ingredients:
• 100g crunchy peanut butter • 25g creamed coconut, chopped • 1/2 tsp chilli powder • 1 garlic clove peeled and crushed • 4 tbsp soy sauce • 3 small peppers (red, green and yellow), deseeded and cut into 2.5cm pieces • 4 thick slices of aubergine • 1 large red onion, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 3 tbsp sesame oil • 4 nests fine egg noodles • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced
Tip:
If you don’t have a griddle pan cook the kebabs under a pre-heated grill or use a heavybased shallow frying and add a little oil.
10
Please mention The
Place the peanut butter, coconut, chilli powder and garlic in a small pan with 180ml water. Heat gently, stirring all the time, for 2-3 minutes until the coconut has dissolved and the sauce has thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in half the soy sauce. Thin down with a little more water to get a pouring consistency, if necessary. Par-boil the peppers in a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes, drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper. Cut the aubergine slices into quarters. Thread the peppers and aubergine onto 8 pre-soaked wooden skewers with the onion wedges. Preheat a cast-iron griddle pan until almost smoking. Whisk 2 tbsp of the oil and remaining soy sauce together and brush all over the vegetable kebabs. Cook the kebabs on the hot griddle pan for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently until tender and lightly charred. Meanwhile, cook the noodles in a large pan of boiling water for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and toss together with the rest of the sesame oil and the spring onions. Serve the kebabs on the noodles and drizzle over the satay sauce.

Country Mutters
A Hitch in Time..... by Lady Muck
I never understood why people of a certain age used to bleat on about how time goes by so quickly until I myself reached that certain age myself. You know the one - when you can’t pick up something off the floor without making a noise and doctors surreptitiously check your birth date before you’ve even got to number 2 on your list of niggling ailments and put on their sympathetic face before launching into the speech that begins ‘When you get to your time of life....’ Whole years go by in the blink of an eye and by the time you get round to thinking that you really must do something about that New Year’s resolution you may as well recycle it for the next one. One minute you’re tying your child’s shoelaces for them and the next you find yourself in the ridiculous position of wagging your finger at someone 6 inches taller than you are. Well enough is enough. I’d like to propose the inauguration of official Time Out Days. One a month should do and for that day there will be no television or radio transmissions, no internet or newspapers so that there will be no advertising reminders to buy sun cream while you’re still digging a path through the snow to get to your front door. All shops will be shut so that we don’t have to think about buying Christmas presents in the January sales which even more annoyingly now seem to start on Christmas Eve, so you have to start thinking about next Christmas before you’ve even had this one. The only activity allowed on Time Out Days will be pottering. In case it’s been so long you’ve forgotten what it means, or heaven help us, you’ve never been introduced to this ancient art, it means you spend the entire day wafting around the house wondering when exactly you thought that shade of paint was attractive or poking around in the shed looking for something you don’t really need - the point is the activity (if you can call
12
Please mention The
it that) which you choose has to be completely pointless. You may not go for a walk unless it can be described as aimlessly wandering around in circles. You may not even make a phone call to a friend unless you forget why you’re calling as soon as they pick up (not hard, let’s face it) and the subsequent conversation revolves around that topic only. Time will slow down on that day. You’ll have time to reflect, to re-group and re-charge. Of course, there is the danger of creating Rash Decision Days after you’ve had time to realise you hate your job/partner/entire life and you decide to chuck it all in and go and live in a yurt on a Welsh hillside. Yet more worrying is the thought of the marketing opportunities Time Out Days would generate - imagine special compilations of mood music, pipe and slipper sets, specially crafted sticks to moodily prod things with. And automated emails saying ‘We’ve noticed you haven’t had a Time Out Day in 6 months - may we help?’ Oh forget it - I just haven’t got time for this.

With no scaring or damage to the skin electrolysis works on all hair types and colours. Multiple treatments are required on a regular basis, but once the hair is destroyed it cannot come back.

Aldham Village Hall Fund Raising Update Our fund raising efforts for 2012 proved very successful, and we have finished the year with a total of £36,106 in the bank. The Table Top sale on the 8th December generated a lot of sellers and The Christmas Quiz Night held on the same evening, was well attended and boosted the funds to the tune of £315.00 profit. An excellent result. As we are hoping to make more progress on the rebuilding project this year, we are not planning too far ahead for 2013, but there will be another Table Top sale on Saturday 26th January. Please note change of time, sale will start at 10.00 am and finish at 12.00 p.m. We are also organising a Rummage Sale on Saturday 23rd February and a Craft day on Sunday 24th March - please see What’s On pages for more information. Hoping again for your support at any of our fund raising events in 2013. With thanks on behalf of Aldham Village Hall Fund Raising Committee. This exciting project will offer innovative workshops for children to find out about the early history of the area. There will also be opportunities for students to learn archaeological techniques and for others to develop media and communication skills by making their own documentary film. Everyone can take part in walks, Art workshops and an Exploration day with demonstrations, hands-on stop animation sessions, finds handling and a historic garden. Stewardship Stourside Stewardship Stourside is the name of the first of a series of walks put together for Connection magazine by Derek Keeble, who is the author of WALKABOUT Colchester Health Promotion’s Book of local routes produced in 1991. Now in his 80th year, this former Orienteer finds health walks are now his premier outdoor recreation. His lifetime log of organised walking events totals 4300. These are shared between leading for rambling clubs, publications to meet demand and family and social-group walking with his late wife, Jessie who was the force-for-walking within the Clan. “Keep happy feet” became their signature in 1976 and Derek is pleased the sentiment has been further diffused by filmstar penguins. The Stewardship Stourside walk includes part of the Stour Valley Path in the countryside around the village of Wormingford. It is a 3.6 mile circular route which takes about 100 minutes to complete and should be ideal for blowing away the cobwebs during the transition from Winter to Spring. Walkers should be able to spot cheery snowdrops along the way during the month of February. The walk starts from Wormingford Community Education Centre opposite the church, where parking may be available by prior agreement (call 01787 227307 or email wcec12@gmail.com). There is a cafe every Monday morning at the centre from 9.30am - 11.30pm serving good coffee and home made cake which would make an excellent conclusion to this walk. Full details and a map of the walk may be downloaded from the Connection website: http:// theconnectionmagazine.co.uk/category/magazinefeatures/walks/
